I know for CSS they hold the spray material that players use in game. Check the logs from your download site for 404 - File Not Found errors, it's probably a misspelt filename in a res file, a missing res file or capitalisation in the wrong place (if its a Linux based web server) Graham Ook wrote: > I have a download site for my OP4 server, and I know it works. [hlds] sv_downloadurl question
I have a download site for my OP4 server, and I know it works. However, I find .ztmp files on my server, telling me that the server uploads some files to some clients instead of it being retrieved from the download site. I don't put ztmp files on the download site, and I know that the uncompressed files get downloaded just fine. So why the ztmp files? Does hlds make them automatically? Or is it more likely that sometimes the download site is not available, so the server uploads the ztmp to the client instead? ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds

Re: [hlds] sv_downloadurl usage
In server.cfg enter the following: sv_downloadurl http://www.yourwebsite.com/sv_downloadurl Create a directory on your website called sv_downloadurl Copy the res, bsp, sound, etc. files into that directory. You do not need to copy ALL you game server files into that dir, just the custom ones you want to use. So, if I'm loading customer dod maps to the website I would extract the files from the zip. You should have folders like maps, sprites, sounds, etc. Copy those files/folders into your sv_downloadurl directory. Also, there are seveal stickies that describe this on the steampowered.com forums. Try that and see if it works for you. -D - Original Message - From: "David Williams" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Thursday, March 09, 2006 12:40 PM Subject: [hlds] sv_downloadurl usage hey guys i'm just starting to learn srcds and i cant figure which config file i should put the command sv_downloadurl so it loads it at server start. do i still need to create .res files for each one, If so what the hell should i put in them (url path what). yes thats right Ook - Original Message - From: "Ook" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Saturday, January 07, 2006 11:30 PM Subject: Re: [hlds] sv_downloadurl not working anymore it downloads from both places you seem to have some big sound files that players must download from your server I have barf.wav and bungholio.wav, both fairly small, in my res files, most of the sounds just sit there until I rotate them through the res files. I don't like players to have to sit there and download too many sound files. The map might have had some bigger files, some of the kitkat and mario maps have bigger sound files, and those probably come from the server. I wonder if that is what I'm seeing - players downloading the maps and stuff from host, and then the map specific files from the server? Hi, just looked my apache logs, there is still activity. As it is a client feature you may check if the client has the right value for sv_downloadurl. When you are connected to the server, just open console, type sv_downloadurl and let the auto-complete show you the value ;) Everybody can find out your http-dl url by looking the var and it makes no sense at all to hide your url ;) gr33tz, Hackmett > > >> it downloads from both places >> >> you seem to have some big sound files that players must download from >> your >> server > > I have barf.wav and bungholio.wav, both fairly small, in my res files, > most > of the sounds just sit there until I rotate them through the res files. Re: [hlds] sv_downloadurl not working anymore
it downloads from both places you seem to have some big sound files that players must download from your server I have barf.wav and bungholio.wav, both fairly small, in my res files, most of the sounds just sit there until I rotate them through the res files. Re: [hlds] sv_downloadurl issue
Content on linux/unix web servers is case sensitive, content on win32 webservers is not. For the BSP this can be complex since the map name "mapNaMe.bsp" as entered on the server console or in the mapcycle defines the bsp name that will be requested from the URL (so on linux/unix servers the case must match) then the content that is defined in the .res file and within the BSP must match as well, so a sound name that is "sound.WAV" requires that exact name and case on the linux/unix webserver too. Having a different case for the content in the .res file (from the actual content in the BSP) may cause the content to be downloaded (attempted) a second time, always important to have all content name/case match everywhere. One thing to be aware of though, if content with a space or other special character is not available, the client may display a truncated name in console for the failed content. For example, hldm server, + linux web server which does _not_ have this piece of content available: "sound/music/don't_worry_be_happy.wav" the webserver will flag the correct name: [Tue Nov 8 10:38:02 2005] [error] [client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] File does not exist: valve/sound/music/don't_worry_be_happy.wav but the client will display a message that the failed download is: Error: server failed to transmit file 'sound/music/don' (client will properly d/l the file if it is available). Win32 HTTP servers just send it all regardless of case, assuming its available. So in summary (so it all works regardless): 1. server must have a .res file for the BSP locally and on the http server 2. content names in .res file must match content names within the BSP including case 3. content names on http server must match content names within the BSP including case 4. mapcycle name (or map as typed in console) must have the same case as the mapname on the http server If you are running any addon mod (like MANI or adminmod) that can force additional content down, be sure to disable this since if that content is not on your http server it will cause an additional connect/reconnect by the client to the http server as well. Any content not available on your http server won't be downloaded so there should be no bandwidth hit regardless of the number of failed attempts. - Original Message - From: "Chris K" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Tuesday, November 08, 2005 9:14 AM Subject: [hlds] sv_downloadurl issue I've noticed and had a few complaint's of an issue where resources are redownloaded over again upon reconnecting. Re: [hlds] SV_DownloadURL
Sorry I was not trying cause a problem. Yes using a seprate web server is a great idea, my posts were targeting the guys that were having problems getting all the right files to there web share, my solution (and yes when large groups of players do not have the map there is a lag, but in my case it's the limit of transfer my server solutions has,I am only allowed so much of the OC3 pipe per second) makes it simple to install new maps, I don't have to worry about installing the map in more then one place. Every thing installed on the server is all ready made available to the web server due to the nature of the setup. Think about it. Do you really want your Game Servers precious resources being squandered on downloading map files to 18 players on a full 24 slot server? The other six players are going to experience some erratic play while your server pushes out files to 18 people at the same time and tries to run your game servers. Not to mention anyone playing on any other game servers you happen to be running at the same time will suffer as well. If you do not have separate web space there are places to get sv_downloadurl resources for a very reasonable price.I use URLDownload.com and I have been very happy with them. It was* recommended* to me (and I agree) that you shouldn't run them both on the same box. The numbers I gave were similar to an example given to me to explain why and I have certainly seen that situation come up. I was having a serious problem with momentary lag on map changes when a large group of players had to download the maps. File transfer uses considerable resources. If enough players are downloading a large map at the same time it will slow things down. I had a CS server that was almost entirely Custom maps with a couple of new ones added every week or so. I also had a CZ server with many Custom maps. We had a devoted following of players that played there, one because of the maps and two because of the High Speed Downloads that kept them from having to go get them. Having sv_downloadurl services on the same box shortened the time that the server was effected but it was still there. Moving the files off site to another location solved the problem entirely. My account at urldownload.com cost around $12.95 a month I believe and can host maps for all of my servers. I also have a friends development site hosted there with plenty of room to spare. I feel that it is well worth the money. Just my 2-cents guys. Sorry if it came across wrong. If you feel that you can run it on the same box then go

If you feel that you can run it on the same box then go for it. I found that with my configuration I could not. Yours may be different. ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds

Thank you all for answering my questions on this topic. Just for the sake of the next person who tries to do this I thought that I would summerise my experience. 1. Find webspace and put maps folder with bsp files into it 2. Set SV_DownloadURL (ensuring there is no forward slash on the end and the folder that you set is has the same contents as the cstrike directory, obviously just the bits that need downloading) 3. Changelevel to a different map to test to see if the downloads work without compression 4. Download bzip2 [ http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/bzip2.htm ] 5. Install into default location 6. { My computer properties > advanced > environment variables > path } add your bzip2 installation directory to here (it means you can run the command from command prompt no matter which folder you are in) 7. Create a folder and put your maps in it 8. Create a .bat file (make a text file and rename it zip_maps.bat) 9. Put this one line in it bzip2 -k -9 *.bsp 10. Run the bat file 11. Make 2 subfolders called 'original maps' and 'compressed maps' to ensure that you don't re-zip the same files each time 12. Upload .bsp file to the game server 13. Upload the .bsp.bz2 file to the web server 14. With a new map, test Graham On 9/21/05, Graham Robinson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Thank you. RE: [hlds] SV_DownloadURL
18 players of 24 that doesn't have the map you are running, doesn't sound real. And if so, clients will only download it once. You should be running a lot of custom maps to have this problem. And like someone else said, if you care about performance you will not run the server on a poor connection. The tranfers are also a lot smaller when only 6 people are playing, right? Also like someone else said, the game server it self is limiting the download when not using sv_downloadurl (to the rate settings?) My only reason to use this is to speed up that transfeer. Not to save the network load. -Alex -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 22. september 2005 06:54 To: hlds@list.valvesoftware.com Subject: Re: [hlds] SV_DownloadURL Dustin wrote: > My understanding was, that it allows for a faster download to the client. > The HLDS does trickel download, so in most cases the player gets > everything > just in time for the 30 min map timer to run out :). > > > - Original Message - > From: "LDuke" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: > Sent: Wednesday, September 21, 2005 1:39 PM > Subject: Re: [hlds] SV_DownloadURL > > ___ > To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, > please visit: > http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds > > > > You shouldn't run your sv_downloadurl mirror on the same physical location as your Game servers. Re: [hlds] SV_DownloadURL
actually the gain is all the way around, reduces space utilized on the Web Server, the user when connecting to your game server pulls from the web server and does not take a seat on the game server until they have all of the required objects. Second the transfer rate is fast of course depends on your bandwidth of the Web Server. An area when people setup objects on thier web server is to insure you have a .RES of all of the required objects for custom maps. This should be on the game server, otherwise when people download they will be missing objects, sounds etc. Another item to remember, only the .BZ2 files are required on the web server. you do not require both the .BZ2 and the object non-compressed. Re: [hlds] SV_DownloadURL
A diffrent approach. This of course asumes that your web server is on the same server as the game server. Why not point the Web server to the game directory? You do need to make sure that you configure the web server to only allow read access to the right folders and block out the cfg and other critical folders, be kind of bad to have your server.cfg file viewable from the web server. But if done right you would no longer need to worry about what files need to be added to the web server and any server created files would all ready be there. Works for everything Bzip2 *.* That will bzip every file in the current directory, and if there's any sub-directories, it will just spit out an error saying it can't zip that. Re: [hlds] SV_DownloadURL
Graham, I've found the easiest way to do zip all files in BZIP2 format .. is like Rick said ... Put the Bzip2 executable program in your path somewhere (C:\windows). Then, put all the map files under one folder set (like fy_iceworld_adv) which might include fy_iceworld_adv.bsp and fy_iceworld_adv.nav. Other materials can be here too if they are used by the map .. But just make sure to upload them to the correct folders on your web server and CS server (like materials/etc instead of the map/ folder). Once you have all files in the folder, I've been using the following command-line with great success: bzip2 -k -9 *.* The -k option will KEEP the original files ... because otherwise, it removes them. The reason you need this is ... you will still have to upload the original unzipped file to your CS:S server - and of course, the bzipped file to your web server .. so you need BOTH sets of files (compressed and uncompressed). The -9 switch tells it to use maximum compression. I've seen maps cut to 1/5th of their original size and more. Truly great. Once you've zipped all files, then I ftp to both my web server and CS server .. and upload the BZIP'd to the web server ... and uncompressed to the CS server. Works like a champ. That 7-zip GUI program looks great ... but the only thing I noticed is that even though it adds RIGHT-CLICK ability in Windows Explorer .. you still have to zip EACH file individually .. and go through the GUI interface to do so. It seems that the command-line would still be quicker in this case .. unless someone comes up with a right-click ability that zips EACH file INDIVIDUALLY .. like they have to be on the web server. The only thing I've wondered about is ... I bzipped my SOUNDS that people download (like headshot.mp3 etc.) ... and each time someone connects ... it 'goes through' them like they are going to download them .. but just seems to be checking to see if they have the files. I'm thinking this may be because it can't immediately check to see if they have the file .. without parsing the bzipped file first (since the sounds are already uncompressed on their computer) .. and then it realizes they already have the file. Just a minor annoyance but I'm thinking of un-bzipping my sound files for this reason. Just wanted to give you a heads up on that. Good luck. I've been using sv_downloadurl for the past month and have decided that it is the best thing since sliced bread but I really want to try out this bz2 zipping if it does the same as winrar in terms of compression. However I seem to be having great difficulty finding a Windows program that creates .bz2 files; could someone shout me a name of a program that they use? Re: [hlds] sv_downloadurl
I've noticed that there's still a small bug with sound files that they don't all unizp or download if they're in .bz2 format. Rejoin the server again and it seems to work ok. So on our server i just left all the sound files uncompressed, which is no big deal cause you don't save a lot of space on .wav files as they're already quite compressed, and .mp3 files actually get larger when 'compressed' to .bz2 lol (.mp3 being a super compressed format already), so it makes no sense to try and compress them. For all other file types the html downloading is working great for us with the files zipped to .bz2. So if its just the sounds you're having trouble with, i'de suggest uploading them uncompressed and compress everything else to .bz2 As for the slash at the end of your sv_downloadurl path, I'de say try it both with and without and see which works for you. Some people swear it won't work with a slash at the end, yet for us it simply will not work without it and works great with it. I think it may have to do with the platform/system that your html download site is set up on. -Artie - Original Message - From: "Johan Brandhorst" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Thursday, July 28, 2005 2:17 AM Subject: [hlds] sv_downloadurl > [ Converted text/html to text/plain ] > > Hi guys. > > I have tried to install an webserver now in about a week to make the server > faster an the downloading times faster. so. It gives me a map not found error. Has anyone had any issues with this. Setup Yes it is being hosted on the same box as the server but a different ip. I can access the site by going to that ip and the corresponding folder. The directory structure is exactly as it is in cstrike.
