Re: [Hornlist] Best schools in Saint Louis, MO

2009-09-01 Thread Carlberg Jones

Hi, Barbara -

If it were me, I'd find the school which would
offer the easiest degree to complete in the
shortest amount of time and offer the largest
package of financial aid in return for playing in
their musical groups. Then I'd find the best horn
teacher in town from whom to take lessons.
(probably in the reverse order so I'd be in the
best shape for auditions.)

True, and I could have brought tons of duets - on

space limitations. David Goldberg's idea of
putting some on a flash drive was excellent.

2) Sight reading duets (for me) is harder than sight reading a lot of other

With duets you're on the spot. I don't pay much
attention to anything in duets; it's just lots of
fun playing with someone else!

3) If you think such an event may happen again, and you own some duets,
spend some time practising them so you won't have to sight read the next
time.

To each her own, of course, but it'll be a hot
day in Michigan in January that I'll practice
duets.

4) It is a lot of fun and a neat way to meet other horn players.

My feeling exactly.

Also, regular duets are great for improving sight
reading, technique and endurance. There's
pressure to keep going, but not enough to keep
playing if one of the players gets a bit tired.

While alto clef is certainly easy to read, in

Sure, no reason not to.

By the way, will someone please tell me which of
the hundreds of horn concertos are written for
stopped horn?

If the answer is yes, why the stopping valve is placed just on the Bb side?

Because stopping, done properly, raises the pitch
of the F horn a half step. On the Bb side, the
same stopped hand position raises the pitch more
than a half step, therefore, a stopping valve is
offered on some horns.

Is it necessary to play the whole concerto on the Bb (A) side?

No. Again, someone clue me in on what concerto
(I'm after only one) is for stopped horn
throughout. Yeah, I know you're a trumpet player.
Okay, then, I'll settle for a trumpet concerto
written for muted trumpet.

Is there any
double horn with stopping valve on both sides?

I've never seen one, but I haven't seen all the horns that are out there.

Is there any double descant
with stopping valve on both sides?

I would say this would not be applicable since
these horns (I assume you mean high F and high
Bb, same as a Bb trumpet) would not be used for
pieces requiring stopped notes. As in Baroque
music.

Actually, maybe someone can answer this question.
Why do descants in Bb and high F sometimes have
stopping valves when one can stop on the high F
side just fine, fingering a whole step lower?

Over the years I've found that Conn's in general

notes. For that very reason I've enjoyed the
Holton's; they've taught me.

As to horn brands, well, I guess you could find a
good horn in any brand, but, going for a bigger
chance of getting a decent horn, I sure wouldn't
get a Bach horn. Trumpet, sure. My trombone's a
Bach. As to the woodwinds, I would get a Selmer
sax and a Buffet clarinet, not the reverse.

I don't think we know much about the amateur
friend who wants to learn horn. Not the age,
level of musical accomplishment, the dedication,
or the financial the state. Regardless, I say not
the Bach.

Says one who just spent more for one bassoon than

[Hornlist] Selman Horn on Hornplayer.net

Greetings -

I have no interest in this other than curiosity.
There is an ad on hornplayer.net:

Selman - Full Double - 900 US $
http://www.hornplayer.net/advert.asp?id=7720

To assuage that curiosity, I looked up completed
listings for selman french horn on e-Bay.
There were 12 double horns listed.

Two of these double horns had sold, one for
$299.95 USD, and the other for $257.95 USD. The
rest didn't sell. The starting bid for all the
double horns was between $250 and $300.

Strangely enough, the Selman horn on
hornplayer.net is offered for sale by Katie
Selman of Douglas, Georgia, USA, whom I hope
doesn't subscribe to this list.

The old adage that you can't teach elephants how
to dance seems to have gone by the wayside.
Search for teaching elephants.

The only problem with an elephant playing a brass
instrument is with what could he make an
embouchure. There is only one place I know of,

instrument properly. Of course, in my experience,
most animals make a pretty good sound from that

I don't know about this particular piece, but I
played in a woodwind quintet for a couple of
years and made my own parts for every piece we
played, avoiding all rapid page turns. sometimes
by physical cut and paste, sometimes by scanning

Page turns are always a problem. For me, the
ugliest and the worst is when the parts are
originally perfect, but some lame-brain librarian
has copied them with the odd pages on the left
instead of the right, which makes it easy on the
eyes to go from left page to right page, but then
every page turn is only possible gymnastically.

A mouthpiece it is collection of a number of mouthpieces of varying
sizes and shapes. There are interchangeable rims and cups. All major
stock mouthpieces are included. These are the mouthpieces which come
with new instruments.

At the high end of the mouthpiece kit market are the collections
housed in hinged cases similar to the carpenters' tool kits of the
19th century.

These days almost all mouthpiece kits include a CD with photographs
of the mouthpieces showing views of each one with outside dimensions
together with the same mouthpiece cut in half lengthwise showing
inside dimensions as well. Dimensions are in inches and millimeters.

Do not be misled by offers for mouthpiece kits offered by major music
sellers. These are usually of two classes. One doesn't include the
mouthpiece! It includes brushes, swabs and, perhaps, a sterilizing
solution. The other kind is for woodwinds and does include the
mouthpiece, cork grease, a sterilizing solution and a cleaning brush.

While not everybody needs a mouthpiece kit, one can be a valuable
asset for those interested in self analysis.

Oh, I forgot to say that she said she'd love to play horn, and what
better kind of student can there be than one who's had lots of
singing in her background, even though she's rather young.

Re: [Hornlist] NHR files

2007-04-03 Thread Carlberg Jones

To do a thorough seach the hard drive must be indexed, and this
should take around an hour for a small drive, say 50GB or so.

This data is kept on the hard drive itself, and that is what is
searched, rather than the files themselves, which is done during the
indexing process. One can understand the logic of not having to wait
an hour for each search.

I wouldn't want my index data stored by Google or Yahoo.

I'm going to give this a shot - I have heard that Google, and now

concept of the software building an index prior to invoking the
search function - this has to speed things up significantly. I'm
not familiar with Windows Vista OS - perhaps this version has now
duplicated Google/Yahoo...

targetting exercise.

What might the advantages be of tonguing over slurring such an

are there any other thoughts?

Would it make a difference if one were to start with the c's and work
down or if one started on a lower note and worked up?

One must remember that the double bass is a transposing instrument.
The sounding pitch is an octave lower than the written pitch.

Seems to me that it would be helpful if you suggested that the
conductor point out specific things during rehearsal. Ask him if you
man play as a section then. You can't win if there's a war, but I'd
say this would improve things. No need to defend yourselves; that's
usually counterproductive. You say he's a nice guy so there shouldn't
be any problem.

Maybe giving the person who has trouble with transposition a bit of
help wouldn't be too bad an idea.

How about some names? Where? Who? How big is the group? What pieces?
Where does he think there's a problem?

For school teachers: Manhasset music stands have wonderful legs, just
like the anvil I have for dent work. Well, enough like it. You put
one heavy person on a table and have that person stand on two of the
three legs and allow the third leg to protrude off the edge of the
table. You can then do the bell dent work. This is best done on
baritone horns.

I've had good luck with students with a rubber band around the valve

Good to be aware of things like this.
