[HOT] Consultancy at PADF

*The Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) is searching for a
short-term consultant to develop an interactive map of Latin America and
the Caribbean to illustrate key data points related to their COVID-19

visitors to interact with their performance indicators. Data will be
disaggregated by country, intervention type, beneficiaries, and other
measures of performance. The map will require regular maintenance by PADF’s

[HOT] HOT News - Audacious Project

2020-06-18 Thread Tyler Radford
Hello,

We are delighted to share with you that the HOT Community has been selected
as one of eight recipients of funding from The Audacious Project (
https://audaciousproject.org/), a collaborative initiative that serves as a
springboard for social impact on a grand scale. The funding recognizes the
essential work that HOT and OpenStreetMap communities have been doing for
years - building humanitarian OpenStreetMap.

Over the next five years, this will enable HOT to scale up it's support to
local mapping communities, with the aim of mapping an area home to one
billion people in OpenStreetMap. For more details, please see here

[HOT] Announcing Rapid Response Microgrants: COVID-19

2020-04-21 Thread Tyler Radford
Dear all,

Today we're launching the first-ever round of HOT Rapid Response
Microgrants:
https://www.hotosm.org/updates/rapid-response-microgrants-covid-19/

In numerous disasters over the years, OSM communities have led or co-led
activations of the HOT network (both globally and locally). This was
particularly important in Nepal where Kathmandu Living Labs played a
leading role in responding to the 2015 earthquake. HOT has now provided six
rounds of funding to support OpenStreetMap communities, totaling 45
grants, but until now we were not able to provide funding for OSM
communities to respond *during* a crisis.

I'm particularly optimistic about this new round, because for the first
time ever we are able to offer financial support to OSM contributors
responding rapidly to a critical information gap in their country, during
an ongoing pandemic. We hope that this support will lead to further
containing COVID-19 and reducing the human suffering caused by the pandemic
and related restrictions. This is the power of the HOT network -
contributing local knowledge to address global issues.

Please share this link widely and apply for the first round as soon as
possible before May 10th.

Take good care,
Tyler

[HOT] COVID-19, what the HOT community is doing, and how you can help

2020-03-27 Thread Tyler Radford
Dear HOT Community,

This has been a tough couple of weeks for many of us. Some in our HOT
community have been affected by sickness of a friend or family member.
Almost all of us have been affected by restrictions in movement, additional
family or child care responsibilities, or loss of a job or livelihood.

I have been busy working with our managers to ensure our staff are safe,
healthy and can continue working remotely where possible. HOT's staff team
https://www.hotosm.org/staff/ is spread across 19 countries, so this has
taken quite some effort, rapid analysis, and policy changes. Most HOT
staff including in country offices are now working remotely. This has only
been possible because of the flexibility of our staff, in particular Global
Operations Manager, Rachel VanNice, and Programs Director Paul Uithol. In
addition, our donors have been working with us to adjust project timelines.
Thankfully, we do not expect any COVID-19 related reductions to staff
positions at this time.

All the while, the HOT community has been identifying ways to best support
the response. So many community members have emailed to offer support and
help during these difficult times. We've published some thoughts on ways to
do that on our COVID-19 page:
https://www.hotosm.org/projects/hot-covid-19-response/
There are now COVID-19 mapping tasks on the HOT Tasking Manager in support
of response efforts in Colombia and Peru: https://tasks.hotosm.org/

These projects are a great way to start - and we are actively seeking other
data needs at the national or local level where our global community can
help (please get in touch if you are aware of requests from a local
response effort). We are actively raising funds for emergency microgrants
from individuals and corporate partners. We hope to be able to get funds to
communities who need it to address COVID-19 related challenges locally.

The HOT community has always come together in times of crisis, so let's use
this as another opportunity to do just that.

Take good care,
Tyler

Projects can take place in any of the following countries: *Burundi,
Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan,
Uganda, Bangladesh or Myanmar*.

*Who?*

Community-based organisations, national and local NGOs, and not-for-profit
organisations working on innovative ways to improve climate adaptation in
cities are invited to apply.

*How much?*

Grants will range from *USD 25,000 to USD 30,000* per project. Funding is

Haiti 2010 earthquake?
To: Membership

Dear HOT Members,

Sending you greetings from New York and hope you and your families enjoyed
a happy and peaceful beginning to 2020.

This Sunday, 12 January marks the 10th anniversary of the 2010 earthquake
in Haiti. While horrific, the event also offered us stories of hope,
kindness, empathy and healing. It also was a defining moment in forming our
movement around using OpenStreetMap to help others in need.

Were you involved in some way (remotely, in Haiti, or otherwise?) I would
like to summarize and publish (on hotosm.org) short bits of stories from
the perspective of OpenStreetMap community members. If you are interested
in submitting your memories of the response or recovery, please share
thoughts on the following questions (~250 words or less is great):

1. How were you involved in the earthquake response or recovery (OSM or
otherwise)?
2. What do you remember hoping, feeling or witnessing at the time around
how OpenStreetMap was helping in the response/recovery?
3. (Optional) What progress have we as a community made in the past 10
years and/or what are your hopes/dreams for OSM in humanitarian action in
the next 10 years?
4. Please share a photo or two of you related to Haiti 2010 if you have
them.

- Responses can be emailed to me directly (~250 words or so)
- Deadline: this Saturday 11 January
- May be edited for length and published on hotosm.org in the coming weeks
- Please share with others you know where involved

[HOT] HOT Microgrants 2020 is now live - hear from 6 community leaders!

2019-11-25 Thread Tyler Radford
*http://donate.hotosm.org/ <http://donate.hotosm.org/> *

Dear HOT,

I'm very happy to announce the official launch of Microgrants 2020. From
now through January 1st, HOT’s annual fundraising campaign will support
communities by raising funds that get disbursed to community projects as
small grants. Called "Microgrants", these funds enable communities to put
themselves on the map in OpenStreetMap literally and figuratively while
addressing the challenges affecting them, from seasonal flooding and
wildfires, to preventing gender-based violence, and responding to disease
outbreaks.

In the past three years, your donations have directly supported 24
communities across 22 countries with over US$100,000. By donating, you will
provide these communities with the technology, training and equipment they
need to make sure no one is left behind.

Check out the projects here: http://donate.hotosm.org/

Now - it's up to all of us in the HOT community to help get them to their
funding goals! 100% of donations go to the communities themselves. HOT does
not have institutional donors that fund this initiative, so your personal
contributions really matter, and affect the success of each community's
project.

If you are not able to give financially at this time, a simple thing you
can do is to share on social media and tell one other friend or family
member about the campaign.

[HOT] Updates to DigitalGlobe imagery layers

2019-07-12 Thread Tyler Radford
Happy Friday HOT,

In case you missed it or haven't mapped in a few weeks, there have been
some changes to DigitalGlobe (now Maxar) imagery layers. See Kevin
Bullock's diary update here:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/@kevin_bullock/diary/390153

Full text is below:

DigitalGlobe, now Maxar [1], is transitioning the OpenStreetMap imagery
endpoints (from “DigitalGlobe Standard” to “Maxar Standard”; and from
“DigitalGlobe Premium” to “Maxar Premium”). OSM users should see content
parity between the old and the new layers by June 30, 2019. Starting July
1, 2019, there will be only two Maxar layers available from within the OSM
editors – labeled with Beta.

Our new imagery services use http/2 protocol. Please note that there are
some known speed issues with the JOSM editor. A JOSM plugin for http/2
support is expected before the end of July (ticket #17861). In the
meantime, increasing the concurrent connections (e.g. to 20) will help. iD
editor already supports http/2.

The good news: imagery will be more recent and more frequently updated with
our latest Maxar mosaic content. We hope that our improved production
processes (bundle block adjustment, atmospheric compensation, continuous
updates, etc.) will benefit OSM contributors.

As always, thanks to everyone within OSM for all your support and feedback.
Shout out to the maintainers and contributors for iD and JOSM who have been
fantastic to work with. Look for Maxar at State of the Map and State of the
Map US; we will be attending and presenting more information on this new
image service. And please feel free to send us feedback. Happy editing!

Re: [HOT] NB: Organised Editing Guidelines | Re: Final Request: Volunteers Needed for Global Mapathons!

2019-04-04 Thread Tyler Radford
Hi all,
I want to recognize a key point here brought up by both Pierre and Mikel:
quality of our data matters. And it is of increasing importance as the size
of the community & number of mapping projects grows.

The idea around a Chief Data Officer or similar certainly has merit. It's
not something we as an NGO have the resources to do immediately but I'm
adding the topic to our next management meeting.

We do care deeply about the usefulness and quality of what the NGO and
broader community is producing and there are a couple near-term steps we
are taking:

1. Software improvements to Tasking Manager (and iD) to limit "bad data"
and promote quality data.
2. Writing a FAQ/guidelines for project managers (at HOT, other NGOs, and
community organizers) on how to "operationalize" the organized editing
guidelines in their work.
3. Dedicated Quality Assurance team members - starting next week we're
assigning 4 QA staff from our Tanzania team to support the Cyclone Idai
activation full-time for the next month.
4. Missing Maps - HOT has a (single) full time QA/data validation person to
support corporate mapathon validation. Not enough but it's a start.
5. Better community support - I asked Russ Deffner to take on a 5-hour a
week community support role to work with the over 250 people who have
access to create projects in the Tasking Manager. Russ will be doing things
like - training in project creation, monitoring, reporting, and followup
with project managers on validation progress across all projects.

I'd consider these "quick impact" - not a global, long-term solution. But
hopefully a step in the right direction.

Dear colleagues,

Please see below a competition on “SDGs & Her” organized by the World Bank
Group, UNWomen, UNDP and Wharton School's Zicklin Center that is addressed
specifically to women who own and/or lead a microenterprise.

Grateful if you could share with your respective networks and motivate
relevant applications – in particular from the business community but also
from grass-root enterprises.

Many thanks in advance and best regards.

*Dear friends of the International Gender Champions network,*

Pleased kindly find below information on *a Call for Proposals for the SDGs
& Her competition* and on *new OHCHR resources available on child, early
and forced marriage*.

With best regards,

* The IGC Team*

*Call for Proposals for **SDGs&Her competition
**,
co-sponsored by the World Bank Group (WBG), Wharton School's Zicklin
Center, UN Women, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP):*

*SDGs&Her is an on line competition *that raises awareness of the SDGs
within the women's business community by recognizing the efforts of women
entrepreneurs in achieving the SDGs. It collaborates with private sector
partners on all SDGs, particularly SDG5, to share best practices and
innovative ideas.

*The competition is open to women who own and/or lead a microenterprise* –
defined as an enterprise that employs fewer than 10 people, has annual
sales of less than $100,000, and/or has a loan eligibility of less than
$10,000.

Applicants complete a short online template
 describing their work and linking
their initiative/product to one or more SDGs. Entries will be screened and
then judged by an expert panel, which will select the winners based on the
microenterprise's impact on the SDGs, vision, purpose, and clarity.

The top winners will be recognized at an event at the margins of the 2018
UN General Assembly High-Level Week in New York in September 2018, and
stories about the winning entrepreneur and many other notable entries will
be shared through partners' social media and websites. *The deadline for
applying is June 30, 2018.*

Many thanks in advance for your help in spreading the word about this
global competition that we hope will interest many of your partners.

   - *Contact*: Perception Change Project perceptioncha...@un.org

*New OHCHR resources available on child, early and forced marriage:*

A *new webpage
*
gathering information on child, early and forced marriage, including in
humanitarian settings, has just been launched. It gathers information on
recent UN events, links to key resolutions, reports, studies, standards,
data, and relevant links.

We will keep it updated and populate it with more and updated information.
Please do not hesitate to alert us of information or documents you consider
relevant.

In the coming months, this page will also host the coming report of the HC
on *child, early and forced marriage in humanitarian settings* to be
presented next year at its forty-first session (June 2019), including the
revenant submissions and supporting documents.

[HOT] Thank you Website Working Group and why I am so excited about the new hotosm.org

2018-06-14 Thread Tyler Radford
By now you may have noticed the new hotosm.org (if not, check it out!)

*My top 5 list (why I'm so excited): The new site...*

*5. ...Focuses on impact: *Has been completely re-organized around our
community's impact on the world, or "Impact Areas" that tie loosely to the
Sustainable Development Goals.

*4. ...Gives volunteer communities and NGOs using OSM for the first time a
clear path to get started: *Clearly links to the FOSS tools we use in our
mapping process, with the goal of quickly helping new volunteer communities
or NGOs get started with OSM.

*3. ...Communicates the true breadth of our community's work: *Prominently
showcases projects from across our community both large and small, making
it simple for any HOT mission-focused project to set up a web presence with
a "Project page".

*2. ...Gets you in touch quickly with the right people:* Links to each's
country's OSM community(ies), voting member(s), or HOT staff team.

*and number one*

*1. Has a map (Built with Mapbox/OSM)! *Click on any country to explore all
projects in that country.

*Congratulations to **Nate Smith for leading this effort. Thank you to each
member of the working group: Amelia, Biondi, Blake, Brendan, Dakota, Dylan,
Felix, Mhairi, Rachel, Ramya, Rebecca, Russell, Willie**, and many others
who provided input along the way.*

I'd also like to congratulate leaders (and team members) from each of the
eight projects.

HOT received many, many strong proposals and as always it was difficult to
choose only eight.

We look forward to seeing all of your photos and updates here as your
progress with your projects - please don't be shy to post updates on this
list!

selection of potential locations for the HOT Summit and were faced with a

are pleased to bring the HOT Summit to FOSS4G this year. HOT will lead the

to Tanzania -- home to our flagship Ramani Huria and Data Zetu projects. The
Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) conference is the

communities.Key Dates: - Coming Soon: Discounted Ticket Sales for HOT

[HOT] Final days - 93% to our goal - donate to get us to the finish line

2018-01-05 Thread Tyler Radford
Hi all,

So many of you have helped us reach 93% of our fundraising goal for the
year. We're almost there! The campaign closes Sunday Jan 7. If you are able
to give financially this year, help get us to the finish line. Your
contribution will have a direct impact on sustaining disaster mapping and
community Microgrants this year.

Donate by Sunday, January 7: https://donate.hotosm.org

Whether you map, donate, or lead other activities that contribute to HOT's
mission, thank you for all that you do.

Best

[HOT] HOT year-end campaign: Two-thirds funded, five days left in 2017!

2017-12-26 Thread Tyler Radford
Hi HOT-

To date, 206 of you have come together to provide financial contributions
to https://donate.hotosm.org getting us to 2/3 of our goal. Thank you!

We have $10,220 USD remaining to raise and just five days left in 2017. If
each of us contributed just $5, we'd meet our goal today.

Let's keep going! Happy Boxing Day, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah - may
each of you enjoy a bit of peace and relaxation this week.

2017-12-19 Thread Tyler Radford
I'd like to echo Rachel's note of thanks: all of you in the HOT community
helped make OSM GeoWeek a success. Thanks for every mapathon you organized,
every map edit, every task square mapped and validated, every new person
you recruited to join the HOT and OSM communities.

Make sure to contribute photos to the global photo pool on Flickr, and let
the organizing team know how we can improve via the survey.

2017-12-13 Thread Tyler Radford
Dear all,

Please visit https://donate.hotosm.org and watch the video of our shared
accomplishments this year.

There is a lot to be proud of, and we need your help to support our global
effort. Be part of the first 100 donors and you'll trigger a $5000 matching
gift from our partners at Hogan Lovells.

   - Share the link with friends/family/on social media
   - Consider dividing you gift by 12 and supporting HOT throughout the year

Thank you for all that you do. If you're not in a positive to give
financially, that's alright too - keep on mapping and sharing your love for
HOT and OpenStreetMap!

*National NGO Program on Humanitarian Leadership*
Now accepting applications!
The *National NGO Program on Humanitarian Leadership (NNPHL)* is delighted
to announce that we are now accepting applications for the 2018 NNPHL.3
Leadership Training Course.

The NNPHL program (previously named the Program on Humanitarian
Leadership), which receives support from USAID's Office of U.S. Foreign
Disaster Assistance, is managed by Concern Worldwide and its partners,
International Medical Corps and Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, with
technical support from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

NNPHL, now in its third year, is an innovative training and professional
development initiative for humanitarian professionals, combining a rigorous
curriculum of in-person leadership training, online learning and
mentorship. By the end of this learning process, NNPHL participants will
have the skills, knowledge, and confidence to take on leadership
responsibilities within a variety of humanitarian organizations.

NNPHL training programs are free-of-charge and open to mid-level
professionals from non-governmental or community-based organizations who
have experience in one or more humanitarian emergency situations. NNPHL
prioritizes staff from local or national NGOs and CBOs who aspire to take
on decision-making and management responsibilities in the humanitarian
sector.

The NNPHL.3 call for applications for 2018 is seeking applicants from Asia.
Only a limited number of applicants from other regions will be accepted for
NNPHL.3; therefore, we recommend that applicants apply to the NNPHL program
that corresponds to their workplace region.

*Please note that the application deadline is January 5, 2018.*

While NNPHL is not designed for senior-level staff or humanitarian
professional working at UN agencies or government organizations, we invite
you to share this announcement with your national NGO colleagues and
relevant humanitarian networks.

To learn more about this exciting and challenging program, including how to
apply, please visit the NNPHL website: www.concernusa.org/NNPHL

Re: [HOT] Buildings and HOT's reputation in OSM

2017-12-11 Thread Tyler Radford
Hi John,

Since others have commented on your points regarding buildings, I'll add
one comment to your point on HOT support of projects on the ground.

In short, this is a huge area of focus for us. HOT is currently supporting
12 communities with training, devices for mapping, and basic funding to run
events and collect data. This will increase to 20 communities in Q1 and Q2
of 2018.

Disaster mapping and Missing Maps are two of our most important programs,
and supporting communities on the ground will, over the long term, improve
data quality as well as help communities achieve the goals that are most
important to them.

Some initial statistics from 2017 are below.

[HOT] Puebla, Mexico - 7.1 earthquake

2017-09-19 Thread Tyler Radford
Dear all

Mexico recently experienced a 7.1 earthquake affecting Puebla and Mexico
City.
https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us2000ar20#executive

Shaking was felt strongly and there is fairly significant damage in Puebla
and Mexico City.

Enrique Zapata, General Director of Open Data from the Office of the
President of Mexico made a request for post event imagery donations. I
discussed with Miriam Gonzalez OSM Mexico (cc) a few minutes ago and will
follow up as we learn how we can best assist response.

Thank you to all of you who are already helping with Hurricane Maria,
Bangladesh Floods, and the Oaxaca Mexico earthquake response.

Nice to meet you during the Interaction Forum. As discussed, it would be
great to see if there are synergies between your work and our digital

MOOC teachers who would like to use HOT as a volunteer platform.

In the meantime, it would be great of you could share with your colleagues
and wider network the link to our summer school Big Data for Peace and

[HOT] View 10 minute presentations from 2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

2017-06-02 Thread Tyler Radford
Dear all-

I recently returned from the 2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk
Reduction in Mexico. Some of the most interesting topics were discussed in
10-15 minute "ignite" format.

See them here, complete with video and presentation materials:
http://www.unisdr.org/conferences/2017/globalplatform/en/programme/ignite-stage

There are a few on participatory mapping (including one on HOT/Missing Maps
which I presented) and I encourage you to check out some of the other
fascinating projects from around the world.

[HOT] A even better set of HOT web tools - your help needed

2017-04-21 Thread Tyler Radford
Dear HOT,

As you know we have some very exciting new features being released soon on
a number of our web tools including the Tasking Manager, Export Tool,
OpenAerialMap, and OSM Analytics. As part of this process, we asked
ourselves "How can we provide a better user experience and more consistent
look and feel across all HOT tools (including learning platforms such as
LearnOSM and courses.hotosm.org and our hotosm.org website)?"

To answer this question we are working with partners at Vizzuality
<http://www.vizzuality.com/> to lead us through a design refresh process.
Vizzuality will be sending a short survey to gather your perceptions around
the look and feel of HOT platforms. The results will be aggregated and used
as input by Vizzuality and a HOT working group of HOT members, volunteers,
and staff.

Look for the survey soon - your input will be valuable whether regardless
of which tools you've used!

Join “Data for Climate Action” – an open innovation challenge to channel
big data for climate solutions

UN Global Pulse <http://www.unglobalpulse.org/> recently launched the Data
for Climate Action challenge: a call to researchers and innovators around
the world to put their skills to use to help achieve
Goal 13 (combat climate change and its impacts).

The challenge is being implemented in partnership with Western Digital
<https://www.wdc.com/> and with support from
the Skoll Global Threats Fund <http://www.skollglobalthreats.org/>, and has
engaged eleven companies who pledged their data or tools to support climate
action.

Big data can provide dynamic feedback on how communities affect and are
affected by the climate system, and can enable innovation to increase
sustainability and resilience. Data for Climate Action encourages
researchers and data scientists to use this data to accelerate climate
action.

Selected participants will have approximately four months to analyze the
datasets provided by companies and produce papers, apps, tools and/or
platforms. These solutions will be evaluated by a high-level panel of
experts in data science and climate change for a November awards ceremony.
Learn more and apply to participate by 10 April at

Re: [HOT] Task Manager slowness

2017-02-02 Thread Tyler Radford
Hi all,

HOT is in the process of re-architecting some of our key services and how
they are hosted, including the Tasking Manager.

In the near-term (within the next week), we will be moving the Tasking
Manager from it's current server to the AWS Cloud. This should alleviate
some of the performance issues you've been seeing. More to come soon!

Re: [HOT] Exciting news: $10,000 contribution from Mapbox

2016-12-21 Thread Tyler Radford
Two days ago Blake and I wrote about the incredible offer from Mapbox to
provide a matching gift to our #mapthedifference campaign (
http://donate.hotosm.org) once we reached the 150 donor milestone. In just
two days, you, the HOT community, helped us get there! Thank you.

*We are now less than $10,000 USD away from our goal. Given our average
donation to date, if each donor recruited just one additional person to
give, our goal would be met today. Could you help by telling one friend or
family member about the campaign?*

[HOT] Help HOT give 10 communities the resources to map!

2016-12-02 Thread Tyler Radford
Dear all,
Over the last 2 years, led by several Boards of Directors, HOT has
developed a concept for our new micro-grants program that is the key focus
of this year's campaign http://donate.hotosm.org. We're thrilled with the
outpouring of support for local OSM communities in only the first four days
of the campaign.

We're very happy to answer questions as part of a positive and constructive
discussion. My virtual door is always open and anyone in the OSM community
is welcome to ask questions on the list or send me a personal note at
tyler.radf...@hotosm.org
. Like any new
initiative, we don't have all the answers, and are still working out some
details, but one point is clear: donors who give to the campaign may choose
that *100%* of their contribution goes directly to fund micro-grants to OSM
communities.

We'll publish a blog post on our website next week to provide some
additional details on the concept for the program. In the meantime, if
you'd like us to address a particular point, just let me know so we can
include it as part of the blog post.

Discussions of stereotypes of nationalities are not constructive and
hurtful to many of us that are in this together as part of the
OSM ecosystem.

Information and financials on HOT are openly available at
http://www.guidestar.org/profile/27-3166713 HOT financials are prepared
annually by an independent external accounting firm. After an
internal financial audit last year which accounted for all funding, we also
improved the structure of our accounts to conform to nonprofit industry
standards (UCOA).

Warmly,
Tyler
