as mentioned mainframe bus half-duplex had increasing throughput
problems, handling 3mbyte/sec disks and then 4.5mbyte/sec disks ... but
unable to handle the engineering 40mbyte/sec disk
arrays. I've also mentioned that ESCON didn't finally get announced
until it was already obsolete (1990 w/ES9000) ... at 17mbytes/sec, it
couldn't also handle the 40mbyte/sec disk arrays.

This also basically precluded a project that the father of 801/risc
roped me into ... doing a "wide" disk head that did 18 tracks in
parallel. This is somewhat analogous to the 60s 2301 drum, essentially
the same as the 2303 drum but read/wrote four tracks in parallel at a
time, four times the transfer rate with 1/4th the number of tracks that
were four times larger.

Original 3380 had 20track width spacing between every data track. This
was later reduced to 10track width spacings for double density 3380 with
twice the number of cylinders ... and the spacing was reduced again for
triple density 3380.

Tne 3380 "wide-head" disk would have 16 adjacent data tracks plus a 17th
servo track. The "wide-head" would span 18tracks, two servo tracks on
either side of the 16 data tracks. It would read/write at
16*3mbytes/sec=48mbytes/sec. The problem for the project was that none
of IBM mainframe I/O could handle that data rate.

even more 3090 trivia:

before starting work on LLNL fibre channel standard (pair of fibre-optic
dedicated to transmission in each direction, original getting 1gbit/sec
concurrent, full-duplex, 2gbit/sec aggregate) ... LANL started
standardization of the Cray 100mbyte/sec parallel channel. HIPPI

there then forms some competition between LLNL FCS and LANL HIPPI,
where HIPPI is being extended to serial HIPPI fiber optic and
200MB/s.

3090 added vector processing as part of playing in the supercomputer
market ... however that required that they also be able to support
100mbyte/sec (and/or 1gbit/sec) I/O. 3090 was barely able to get up to
4.5mbyte/sec transfers ... so what to do?

turns out that physical memory packaging had created a problem for 3090
and to address the problem they came up with memory hierarchy with
extended store ... wide, fast bus with instructions to syncronously move
4k bytes between processor memory and extended store memory (although
the memory chip technology was the same). The extended store interface
turns out to be the only part of 3090 capable of handling the data
rate.

There is kludge that hooks HIPPI I/O interface into reserved addresses
in the extended store bus ... and a sort of PC I/O paradigm using sort
of peek/poke convention for doing I/O (extended store bus instructions
moving data to/from these reserved addresses). That enables being to
attach things like 40mbyte/sec disk arrays to 3090.

There was lab. in kinstaon that worked with these kinds of applications
... but it was populated with dozen FPS (floating point systems)
boxes that included 40mbyte/sec disk array support as part of
native environment.

one of projects I had was HSDT and was suppose to get $20M from the
director of NSF to interconnect the NSF supercomputer centers (or at
least before congress cuts the budget). However, one of my internal HSDT
links was into the (IBM) kingston datacenter that had all these FPS

fixed cell size (for things like error correcting) ... so record lengths

fixed-block, CKD became an legacy anachronism, all simulated on industry

1980, STL cons me into doing channel extender support. They are moving
300 people from the IMS group to an offsite bldg with remote access back
to STL datacenter. The victim group had tried remote 3270 support and
found the human factors totally unacceptable. The channel extender
support puts 3270 channel attached controllers at the offsite bldg. The
channel extender support ... downloads channel programs to channel
simulator at the remote site ... significantly offsetting the latency
and overhead of the intensive channel protocol chatter over the extended
distance. Instead streams data & channel programs simultaneously over
full-duplex connection (side-by-side 3270 demos with real local channel
attached and channel-extender running loop-back to offsite bldg and back
... it is not possible to tell difference).

Vendor then tries to get IBM to allow release of my support. However
there is a group in POK that is playing with some fibre stuff that
gets it blocked because they are concerned that if it was in the
market, it would make it harder to get their stuff released. some

STL does a special 3270 logon screen for the IMS people at the offsite
bldg (standard login for all of STL is VM370, even for people working on
IMS, DB2, MVS, etc). This was also in the days of increasing focus on
productivity from subsecond response. Standard TSO at best was second,
and most of the time much worse. Lots of internal VM370 systems were
.2sec ... but I did "SJR/VM" systems that lots of internal datacenters
ran that would get .1sec using same hardware with identical load (when I
was at science center, it was CSC/VM that lots of internal datacenters
ran, before I transfered to san jose research)

In 1988, I'm asked to help LLNL standardize some serial technology they
are working with ... which quickly becomes Fibre Channel Standard
... including concurrent streaming in both directions of data &
downloaded I/O programs (minimizing latency of I/O program protocol
chatter).

Then ESCON is announced 1990 with ES/9000 when it is already obsolete.

Then some POK engineers became involved with fibre channel standard and
defined an extremely heavy-weight protocol that drastically cuts the
native throughput, which is eventually announced as FICON. Most recent
"peak I/O" benchmark I can find is z196 getting 2M IOPS using 104
FICON. About the same time there was native FCS announced for E5-2600
blade claiming over million IOPS (for single FCS, two such FCS having
higher throughput than 104 FICON running over 104 FCS).

There is some mention of zHPF/TCW that is a little like what I had done
originally in 1980 ... but claims only 30% improvement over standard
FICON (possibly 2M IOPS with only 70 FICON?)

3090 trivia: engineers were really upset being directed to use slow,
vertical microcoded JIB-prime for 3880 disk controller. It had special
hardware bypass for 3mbyte/sec data transfer ... but the controller was
really slow at processing channel programs and rest of the channel
protocol chatter, signicantly increasing channel busy (much, much slower
than the previous horizontal microcode 3830 disk controller).

3090 had designed balanced configuration throughput assuming that
channel protocol overhead busy would be similar to 3830 (with
improvement that data transferred at 3mbyte/sec). When they found
how bad 3880 channel busy was going to be, they had to significantly
increase the number of channels ... which required an additional
TCM, which increased manufacturing cost. There were semi-facetious
references that the 3090 group was going to bill the 3880
controller organization for the additional TCM.

Then marketing spins all the additional channels as how much it
increases the 3090 I/O throughput (obfuscating the fact that the
additional channels were required for the significant increase in
channel busy overhead).

Just minor remarks:
* HMC in 9672 was OS/2 based (at least since G3)
* There were some crypto options in pre-9672 machines, it was rather 
predecessor of CCF, not the cards. I have some information it was ICRF 
(Integrated CRyptographic Feature) which consisted of TCM and KSU (Key 
Storage Unit).

Not to mention earlier 4753 aka NSP or 3945.
* I believe first OSA in 9672 was OSA2 and  of course there was OSA (1) 
before.
* I vaguely remember some photograph of pre-9672 machina (which one?) 
with cards similar to those in 9672.

remapping 168-3 logic to 20% faster chips) That is until somebody
informed the head of POK that it could be decades before the POK
favorite son operating system had (effective) 16-way support ... at
which time some of us were invited to never visit POK again (and 3033
processor engineers to stop being distracted). IBM eventually ships
16-way system more than two decades later ... recent reference

low/mid range market was starting to move to workstations and large PC
servers.

Folklore is that 3092 went to pair of redundant 4361s ... because there
were large number of unsold 4361s in warehouses.

other folklore about 3081 (density/weight). 3081 was originally designed
to be multiprocessor only (two processors & channels in single "heavy"
frame). Problem came up with ACP/TPS which had loosely-coupled support
but no tightly-coupled multiprocessor support. The clone mainframe
makers was still making single processor machines and there was concern
that the whole ACP/TPS market moves to clone makers. The decision was
made to come out with single processor 3083 for the ACP/TPS market (3081
with one processor removed). The easiest would have been to keep
processor0 and remove processor1. The problem was that processor0 was at
the top of the box and simple removal of processor1 (in the middle,
channels at the bottom), could have made the box dangerously top-heavy.

however there were quite a few benchmarks that had application running
on single 3081D processor having lower throughput than on 3033 (single
processor). IBM then comes out with 3081K with double the cache size of
3081D (somewhat similar to 168-3 having twice cache size of 168-1),
assuming it would improve cache hit rate (and therefor throughput) for
some number of applications.

Boeblingen got their hands slapped for anti-trust reasons for moving
the controllers inside (shades of the 2319 disk), or because corporate
inherently favoured Endicott over Boeblingen (and presumably POK over
both)? Or something else?

How were either of the 4331 or 4361 scope'able? Surely both were at
about the same level of integration as the TCMs in the 30x0...

Or had the scope'able requirement quietly disappeared by that point in
favour of redundancy, leaving the other advantages of the service
processor?

The company I went to work for in 1978 was running all corporate
computing  under Itel DOS on two IBM 360/65 processors with 1 MiB
central memory each (also from Itel) and Itel 3330 compatible DASD and
tape drives after an upgrade attempt to IBM 370 combined with an attempt
to run VM to enable a migration path to MVS failed miserably because the
370 turned out to have insufficient real memory to run the existing
workload.  Itel's offer to back out the 370 and replace with dual
360/65's was the fastest and cheapest fix to get things functional
again.  We had resident CE's from both Itel and IBM (who worked quite
well together).

Around 1980 we were finally able to convert to two IBM 4341's with
DOS/VSE, but still ran with Itel DASD and tape for many years.  It took
until 1985 before management could be convinced to repeat the attempt to
migrate to MVS, this time with an IBM 3033  under VM with multiple
DOS/VSE systems and a IBM 3083 under VM XA Migration aid for DOS/VSE and
MVS/XA systems.  By the time we finally did get off DOS/VSE we were
seriously constrained by the limits DOS/VSE placed on virtual memory,
despite running the max of four coupled DOS/VSE systems with shared
POWER spool.

other 3092 lore. Early in the days of REX (before rename to REXX and
release to customers), I wanted to demonstrated REX was not just another
pretty scripting language so I chose as demonstration to rewrite IPCS
(dump reader, huge amount of assembler code) in less than 3months
elapsed time working less than half time would have ten times the
function and run ten times faster (some tricky coding to make
interpreted rex run ten times faster than assembler). I finished early,
so developed a set of automated library routines that would examine for
the most common types of failures.

I thot that it would then be released to customers as upgrade to
existing IPCS, but for some reason that never happened  even tho it
came to be in use by nearly every internal datacenter and customer
PSR. I eventually got permission to make presentations on DUMPRX and how
it was implemented ... and within several months, similar
implementations started appearing at customers.

Eventually the 3092 service process group contacted me about including
it in 3092 release. Since their vm370/cms release 6 was heavily modified
and out-of-date, they had to do almost all the service themselves and

Was that the specialized console where I used to type things like L1 and 
A2 (or whatever it was) to set the load address and IPL?  I don't 
remember the exact commands - from 3084 days.  And then there was the

I totally agree with the dismay expressed at omission of 9672/9674. I've only 
been in this biz since the late 70s, but I was blown away at the architectural 
upheaval represented by the move from bipolar to CMOS. Yet the 9672 still ran 
decades-old programs without even recompile, let alone revision. 

The 9672 ran rather like a dog in the early days. We had to modify SMF exits to 
allow up to three times the coded CPU limit for batch jobs to avoid S322. But 
it worked, and as time went on, the CMOS processors became faster than the 
bipolar machines they replaced. I smell genius. ;-)

note later, 3033 was really threatened by 4341 ... clusters of 4341 had
better performance, throughput, price/performance, lower floor
footprint, lower environmentals and power/instruction than 3033.  at one
point head of POK was so threatened that he got allocation of critical
4341 manufacturing component cut in half.

some large customers were also ordering hundreds of 4300s at a time for
placing out in departmental areas ... the leading edge of the coming
distributed computing tsunami. Internally, IBM was putting so many
distributed 4300s out in departmental conference rooms that conference
rooms became a scarce commodity.

The big explosion in distributed 4300s also attracted the MVS group,
they had the problem was that the only disks for non-datacenter were FBA
and MVS never bothered with FBA support. Eventually they did come out
with 3375, CKD simulated on FBA3370 ... however it didn't do much good,
the distributed environment requirement was also for scores of 4300
systems per support person ... while MVS required scores of support

nearly all 360s & 370s had integrated channels (engine was shared
between simulating 360/370 instructions and running channel microcode)
... it was only the high-end machines that had dedicated external
channles 360/65 & above, 165/168, etc.

boeblingon got their hands slapped by corporate for the 370/115 &
370/125. The 370/115 had nine-position memory bus for microprocessors
... all identical ... one microprocessor was programmed for simulating
370 instructions and one or several other microprocessors programmed
with controller microcode (i.e. not only integrated channels, but also
integrated controllers). The 370/125 was identical to the 370/115 except
the microprocessor running the 370 instruction simulation microcode was
50% faster (than the othere microprocessors).

Very few customer 115/125 configurations had more than 2-3 controller
microprocessors, so they suck me into doing a 5-way SMP multiprocessor
design for 370/125 (I also do a bunch of enhancements including queued
IO/interrupt akin to what is later seen with 370/xa, I also drop
microcode queued interface for multiprocessing dispatching). Endicott
also sucks me into do a lot of work on the microcode enhancements for
138/148. Endicott then complains tht the 5-way 370/125 SMP has better
performance and better price/performance than 370/148 and I'm required
in escalation meetings to argue both sides. Endicott wins ... and the
5-way SMP 370/125 is never announced.

In the late 70s, there was an effort to replace the myriad of different
internal microprocessors with 801/risc (Illiad) ... to simplify the
enormous development & programming environments for each unique
microprocessor ... aka the 4361&4381 followon to 4331&4341, the S/38,
nearly every controller. etc. The followon to the displaywriter was also
going to be 801/risc romp. In any case, all of these efforts floundered
for various reasons.

The channel latency processing of the 370/158 intergrated channels was
much slower than the high end external channels ... characteristic which
is then carried over to the whole 303x family (3031, 3032, 3033). An
example was that even the 4341 integrated channel with minor tweak was
able to handle the 3880/3380 3mbyte/sec speed (and could be used in
bldg14&15 for 3880/3380 testing).

trivia: 138/148 microcode enhancement. Typical 370 (vertical) microcode
simulation ran avg. of ten native instructions for every 370
instruction. I was told that there was 6kbytes worth of available
microcode space ...  and the objective was identify the highest used
6kbytes of supervisor code for dropping into microcode for 10:1
speedup. old post that 6kbytes of kernel highest used pathlength
accounted for 79.55% of kernel processing time (reduced to 8% when
dropped into native microcode, 10:1 speedup)

other trivia: low was vertical microcode ... so those 360&370
machines were little like the Hercules simulation (and native MIP rate
was ten times faster than 370 MIP rate). The high-end machines were
horizontal micrcode ... and rather than measured in avg native
instructions to 360/370 instructions ... high-end machines were measured
in avg. machine cycles per 360/370 instructions (in part because of high
level of hardware integration and overlap). Part of the move from
370/165 to 370/168 was replacing the 2mic memory with 400ns memory
(cache miss latency reduced).  The other part was optimizing the
horizontal microcode reducing the avg. machine cycles from 2.1 to 1.6.
3033 started out with moving 168 logic to 20% faster chips ... but they
also further optimized horizontal microcode getting down close to avg of
one machine cycle per 370 instruction.

I had thought that the 3890 check sorter used a S/3 CPU because 
of right-left movement (which those machines did). As I recall, 
with SCI code, one had to think the reverse of what a S/360 did 
in a move. Granted, I didn't do very much 3890 programming, but I 
did a lot of CPCS programming to handle various tasks and so had 
to be familiar with that and know that a 1419 check sorter 
(Read/Write direct thing) was a backup (never used it).

Old discussion about justification for all 370s moving to dynamic
address translation. Problem was that MVT storage management was so bad,
regions had to be four times larger than normally used (standard 370/165
1mbyte configurations only can practically run four regions). Moving to
virtual memory, MVT could increase number regions by four times with
little or no paging.

remapped to 20% faster chips. 3032 was 168-3 with new covers and using
channel director. 3031 was 158 engine with just 370 microcode (and no
integrated channel microcode) and 2nd 158 engine with integrated channel
microcode (and no 370 microcode) ... a 3031MP was four 158 engines ...
two dedicated for processors and two dedicated for channel directors.

The head of POK also managed to convince corporate to kill off vm370
product, shutdown the vm370 development group and transfer all the
people to POK (or otherwise they weren't going to be able to ship MVS/XA
on time some 7-8yrs later). They weren't going to tell the vm370 until
the very last minute to minimize the number of people that might
escape. Somehow the information leaked early and number of the people
managed to find other employment in the Boston area (joke that head of
POK was one of the major contributors to the new DEC VAX/VMS
project). Endicott did manage to save the vm370 product mission but had
to reconstitute a development from scratch. During this period there was
customer comments about VM370 code quality on VMSHARE

There were some of the original VM370 that went to POK that did work on
the tool virtual machine facility in support of MVS/XA development that
was never intended to be made available to customers. Later when
customers weren't migrating to MVS/XA as planned, there was decision to
release the tool as the migration aid. As part of the tool, there was
SIE (interpretive execution) microcode. SIE was never intended to be
production performance, in part because there was insufficent room for

3090 service processor (3092) was originally to be a 4331 running
customized version of vm370 release 6 with all service screens done in
CMS IOS3270. The service processor was then enhanced to a pair of

devices). CKD devices are still being required, even tho no real CKD
devices have been made for decades ... simulated on industry standard

Other trivia, original sql/relational (System/R) was done in bldg28 on
vm370 370/145. The official followon new corporate DBMS was EAGLE. While
company was preoccupied with EAGLE, was able to do technology transfer
to Endicott for release as SQL/DS. When EAGLE finally implodes, a
request is made about how long it would take to port to MVS which is
eventually announced as DB2 ... originally for decision support

Intel had an operating system (ISIS) and a language. I worked for a hardware 
startup and we used them. It was an embedded, bare-bones OS that could be 
burned into ROM, PROM or EPROM.

I remember the language better, having struggled with it many a late night. It 
was called PL/M, programming language for microcomputers. Ha! You can find 
anything on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PL/M and 
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISIS_(operating_system) . (Did not realize it had 
been written by the late, great Gary K.) It had some quirks. ! (exclamation 
point) was the address-of operator, like & in C. Try spotting an extra or 
missing ! on a dot-matrix printer with a tired ribbon. 8-bit integers that were 
fundamentally unsigned but could be treated as signed. So you could say FOO=-1 
but then (FOO < 0) would be false because fundamentally -1 was just a synonym 
for 255.
