 Hello All,

Thinvent is looking for Linux System Developers, who will be
responsible for the development, maintenance and deployment of our
 Linux based products.

We program in C, bash, HTML5, Java-script, Perl, and the occasional
Python. We work with a number of open source communities, contributing
code upstream and behaving like responsible users of free software.

Your typical day will involved writing kernel drivers, CUPS filters,
terminal emulators, Munin plugins, and cloud management applications.
You will debug serial and USB communication, optimise the kernel for
specific architectures, benchmark and test hardware to the point of
destruction, port uboot to new platforms, and write multi-threaded web
applications that can handle thousands of simultaneous connections.

If you live and breathe computers, can extract relevant information
from the Internet at the speed of light, don?t have to refer to man
pages to use console commands, can write shell scripts and C and Perl
programs, can use and abuse package repositories, and would love to be
a part of the team that is building India?s most successful Linux
distribution, then feel free to email me at shub...@thinvent.in or
 call at 9990344223.

Thinvent develops free and open source software solutions. We service
large government clients, design rugged hardware and embedded systems,
produce a Linux distribution of our own, and participate in some of
the largest IT deployments in India. Visit us at www.thinvent.in.

PS: This is a developers job, not an admin job. We are only looking
for people who have been actively coding during last 6 months.

Please do check: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.telephony.yate/6082

It is not a fork of Asterisk like the OpenPBX.org which eventually
turned into FreeSWICH; whereas the FreeSWITCH again is a completely
re-written alternative.

I do not intend to initiate a war; but am talking about FLOSS
(Free/Libre Open Source) alternatives; forget to mention the FreeSWITCH
in my earlier post, indeed.

IMHO, All these, the Asterisk, the FreeSWITCH and the Yate fulfill
difference design goals, but almost same functionality while one of
these might be more suitable for a particular scenario and, or environment.

I deploy Asterisk for the same reason that I still use Sendmail as the
MTA for those clients who need large mailers:

- It's been around for donkey's years -- the technology is tried and
tested

- Flaws are (mostly) known and workarounds public

- Huge developer community

- Availability of III-party extensions to do almost anything you need
from the system

- Vibrant and responsive community so problem-solving, patches, etc. are
easily available

Sure, there are better (subjectively speaking) alternatives around, but
then, If It Ain't Broken, Don't Fix It. Sendmail's been working for me
for over 20 years, Asterisk for nearly 10, so I happily stand in the Way
of Progress and continue using antediluvian packages. Also, the desire
to use something just because it's new and shiny just isn't there
anymore... hey, my desktop is Debian!

Some of my friends have incorporated a software company which focuses on
software for Energy Trading, Energy Scheduling, Power Exchanges etc.
This is funded by their already established energy trading business.
They are looking for a technical head for this venture.

The person needs to be a hands on developer (young- ideally about 5-7
years of experience) with proficiency in Linux, Perl or Python, MySQL
and network programming. Experience in building complex real world
systems is desirable. He will also be required to mentor and lead a team
of 4-5 people. Most importantly, he needs to be able to build things
from scratch and not just tinker with already existing code.

They promise good compensation, significant equity and complete freedom.

Location: New Delhi.

If you know someone who might be interested, please ask him to contact
me at sumansa...@gmail.com

I personally feel this is an excellent opportunity with immense growth
potential. People looking for a 9-5 job, please excuse!

Dear Gora,

Can you circulate this email to the Delhi ILUG group, also asking for
a meetup on the days when I am in Delhi (20-23 June)?

Thanks,

Zainab

HasGeek presents The Fifth Elephant

Why The Fifth Elephant? Modern technology with ubiquitous connectivity
and cloud-hosted computing power is increasingly becoming important
for making sense of data. The infrastructure, tools, processes and
algorithms for storage, analytics and visualization shape the meanings
and value that can be derived from the data. At the same time, these
technologies are strongly intertwined i.e., the database
infrastructure shapes how data is accessed for processing, as well as
the tools you can (or cannot) use to represent the data in certain
ways on the frontend. Similarly, the paradigms used for simplifying
and storing data - MapReduce, NoSQL, RDBMS - variously enable the
morphing of complex data into meaningful formats. Working with each
one of them involves limitations and possibilities.
The Fifth Elephant is the first of its kind of events where you will
meet different people working with different kinds of data. It is an
opportunity for learning about new tools, technologies, platforms,
processes and best practices, and engaging with business leaders, IT
decision-makers, journalists, analysts and developers. It is also an
opportunity to showcase data products, APIs, services and platforms.

A Conference? An Event? The Fifth Elephant is not simply a series of
lectures. It is a space for interactions with a diverse audience to
serendipitously explore insights and solutions for your data problems,
to understand how hidden meanings in data can be made manifest, and to
learn how others are working with data. The event is open to data
analysts and scientists, statisticians, geeks, enthusiasts,
data-driven product managers and designers, enterprise architects,
journalists, researchers, developers and database professionals.

The Agenda: The Fifth Elephant will be held on 27 and 28 July at the
NIMHANS Convention Centre, Bangalore. The first day covers the
technology track - big data infrastructure, analytics and
visualization. Day 2 invites talks from business and industry -
finance, retail, health, media, telecom - to showcase the nature of
data in each of these sectors and how they are working (and not
working) with the data.
Apart from demos, lectures and tutorials, there will be opportunities
for open house discussions and presentations on Hadoop, NoSQL versus
RDBMS paradigms, and legal and licensing frameworks for data sharing,
among others. Hacker corners, a dedicated participant lounge and
interactive sponsor booths will further the learning, showcasing and
engagement at the event.

Tickets: Regular tickets are priced at Rs. 2,500 until 18th July.
Tickets are priced at the Early Geek rate of Rs. 1,800 for members of
ILUG Delhi until June 24th. Use the discount code ILUG DELHI on
fifthelephant.doattend.com when booking your tickets.

Details:
For submitting talks and speaking proposals, visit funnel.hasgeek.com/5el

I agree that this has long been an accepted custom on
the list (with the proper Subject tag which allows filtering
of such messages by people not wanting to see them).

Also, I would disagree that sites like freelancer.com,
rentacoder.com serve much of a useful purpose for
either the buyer of services, or the seller of such. I
could be wrong, but seems like a race to the bottom
there.

its ok as long as it is marked commercial , looking for work and asking
for work is not a crime , you can check out http://jobs.hasgeek.com/ too i
see lots of postings for dev work , i thought it would be a cool idea to
feature on there job portal too recently where individual can advertise
themselves , there take was the best candidates never list which is also
fair statement then they think don't want to make public a gallery of
folks who aren't the bestI do not know how Linked in or other social
networking sites helps in doing this to some extent .

I know it is allowed to post Off-Topic and, or Commercial articles with
legitimate tags on mailing-lists and, or newsgroups; IMHO, that was good
in the days when there were no blogs and, or free web-sites.

BTW, I'm not forcing or stopping you and, or anyone. *I just expressed

Starting off with a new datacenter? or already managing a datacenter?
Small, Big? You'll need this to standardize and ease up software
deployment, configuration management and be superfast at getting stuff
up and running in no-time.
Start-up or Established - If you're not using a configuration
management and deployment tool, then you're doing it wrong.

Who uses Puppet?
Google, Twitter, Zynga (Makers of FarmVille, Mafia Wars), Stanford
University, Directi, Red Hat, Siemens and lots of other cool companies
:)

Who is the audience?
This training is ideal for those who want a Puppet jumpstart. Newer
members at an organization already using Puppet, or experienced
sysadmins wanting to bring Puppet into their team will get everything
they need to deploy solutions.

Pricing?
This training costs $2395 per attendee from puppetlabs, but OlinData
as a partner is offering it at over 65% discount!
Not Enough? Early Bird signups get more discounts.
To know more head to this page -

and book your slot soon to avail Early Bird Discount!
Note: Accepting only 12 slots to keep the quality of training at high standards.

Does this mean the training content is toned down?
No. The discount is only on the price. Content is 100% official. :)

Now perform administrative tasks (such as adding users, installing
packages, and updating server configurations etc.,) on hundreds of
servers with same ease and time that you'd do it for one server.
Be smart, do automation.
See you there!

[ilugd] [Commercial] Want to play god ? System admin architects wanted at a large ecommerce venture

2011-12-21 Thread Sandeep Srinivasa
Tradus is launching a massive effort to revamp its entire architecture to
take it to a whole new level. We are backed by the Naspers-MIH group (which
incidentally owns 30% of Facebook).

Do you wish you had used Shinken or Icinga instead of Nagios ? Want to use
Ubuntu LTS instead of Centos. Wish someone would stop the mysql insanity
and choose postgresql ?

Why dont you join us at Tradus (www.tradus.in) at Gurgaon and define the
stack we should use. You get to play god.

We are looking for system gurus to own the network infrastructure. This
means you get to scream at the application developers if they thought up of
a poor DB schema (incidentally - mysql, percona, postgres... we are
thinking of all of those). We want to build a monitoring system that not
only monitors systems at the OS and hardware level (nagios, monit, munin ?
you help making the choice), but also at the business level (oops...
transactions per hour have fallen). You will also help us define our
deployment process, failover systems and set up high availability - which
means you need to be good at stuff like replication, configuration
management tools (puppet, chef, bcfg2) and hudson/jenkins. [Extra points if
you have worked with HIDS or any other IDS.]

Your core philosophy needs to say automation. You need to be very, very
good at system configuration tools (e.g. Puppet, Chef, bcfg2, etc.). You
need to be very good at DB tuning (mysql or postgresql ) as well as
replication. We would need you to have a sound idea of security and
firewalls (if you have worked on HIDS, its a big plus). If you dont know
any of the technologies mentioned above - you need to show aptitude to
learn.
Your interview process will most definitely involve you making us a
presentation about your idea of architecture - and will also involve
writing scripts, deploying, etc.

You will have considerable freedom in working with different stacks -
however, the catch is that we are maintaining an older stack deployed and
working with legacy processes. You WILL have to keep this running as long
as we do not have a replacement. You will have to build your new robust
processes, but will have fight to maintain the older, working, broken ones.

Perks:

You get your own laptop
Flexible work hours (upto a limit - we believe in work life balance for the
rest of us)
Industry standard salary

I'm not sure, whether you are clear enough or not, but my idea was -- we
should not confuse amateur or enthusiast web designers and developers;
this can devastatingly ruin their career, learning and, or development.

How many singers do we know who compose their own songs? If I'm not
wrong, I can count them on tips though we are 7 billion now.

IMHO, designing a website is analogous to composing a song, which *only*
a seasoned lyricist can do better, whereas presenting a website using
HTML + CSS and needful scripting is correlative to singing a song, which
*any* trained (yes, trained and necessarily not seasoned) singer can
sing well. Moreover, the content of a website can (or shall definitely)
play the roll of background or ambient music.

thanks Balwinder for the analogy. You're right.
to take it further, i need 'backup vocalists' of HTML+CSS
and/or cover-singer artists.
is there a specific job-designation that fits the profile?
web-designer is too catch-all.

i also suppose such a person would already be familiar

[ilugd] [Commercial] Looking for a network engineer in Jaipur

2011-10-02 Thread Gora Mohanty
Hi,

If you are a network engineer in Jaipur who can be onsite,
and take on small tasks, probably on a part-time basis. or
know of such a person, please contact me off-list?

Appended is a request from a small American startup
who have some kind of a setup in Jaipur. I do not know
any further details, as this request came through a
third-party. It seems like a simple task for now, but might
become more interesting later on.

Regards,
Gora
---
We'll be upgrading the network configuration in both Brooklyn and
Jaipur. This will involve new hardware as well as new providers. We
will do our best to configure as much as we can in Brooklyn but at
some point, someone in Jaipur will need to make some configuration
changes at our direction, not to mention plug things in and do the
tests to make sure it was done correctly. It's best if that person
not only be able to follow the instructions but also know what they
mean in the first place in case something unforeseen comes up. For
example, instead of I connected the machine but still couldn't get
connectivity. Please advise we would want to hear I plugged in the
machine and there was no connectivity as expected, so I first checked
to see if I could ping the gateway and that was OK and then I ...

So maybe not necessarily a network guru but someone who knows
something about networks.

On the tactical side, right now we're troubleshooting some network
issues between Jaipur and Brooklyn involving the VOIP phones. We just
set up some network sniffers on the Jaipur side and are doing the same
on the Brooklyn side so we're good with this for now because we were
able to do that setup remotely. When we start plugging and unplugging
things eventually, things may get more exciting over there :-)

[ilugd] [Commercial] Muktware Anniversary and Foss Writing

2011-03-13 Thread Swapnil

Hi,

Sorry for bugging you again. Muktware will complete one year in April.
It's an achievement for us, especially for me as after moving from
India, and quitting LFY, it was a challenge for me to stay connected to
the FOSS world and continue to contribute in the manner I could --
writing and publication. Today Muktware is a well known online
publication. Thanks to a lot of LUG members who have been guiding me
through this.

To celebrate one year, we are increasing the payment per-article. Now we
pay Rs 1,000 or US$ 20 per article. The minimum length is 750 words. We
are inviting reviews of OpenSuse 11.4. Gnome 3 and other latest distros.
We are also inviting columns on contemporary issues.

Please help me continue this FOSS journey.

PS: We are based out of Brussels, Belgium. If any of you have plans to
visit Brussels, please get in touch.

[ilugd] [Commercial] Co-locating with Srijan in Gurgaon

2011-01-20 Thread Anil Kumar Sharma
We're based at Signature Towers in Gurgaon. The office space we currently
(about 2850 sq. ft.) have is much larger than what we require in the current
team. We had a lot of aggressive growth plans, which are shelved. Our Dev+QA
team size is about 25 people. We plan to remain broadly this size only.

The office rental is quite a lot, and therefore we're looking out for
companies who may want to co-locate. Our office can easily accommodate a
team of 15-20 people. We could have a common Admin department.

We're interested in companies with whom we could form a business 'synergy' -
those working in the following domains:

- Social Media Marketing
- Design agencies
- Corporate training
- Content/Technical Writing
- Software Development (Drupal, Rails, Java, Django)

About Srijan

Srijan Technologies is a leading Drupal development company having built
sites like www.openthemagazine.com and www.mnn.com. It works on the entire
stack related to Drupal -
a) Configuration and Development,
b) Performance Tuning
c) Support and Maintenance. It also works on FaceBook apps, and shortly
getting into iPhone and Android development.

Should you be interested to find out more, please call Anil Sharma at: +91

Re: [ilugd] [COMMERCIAL] ALSA hacker wanted

2011-01-10 Thread Raj Mathur (राज माथुर)
On Monday 10 Jan 2011, Linux Lingam wrote:

depending on the level of hiss, here's a quick workaround:

 1. ensure the recording has a few seconds of silence recorded:
 without voice/music/whatever.
 2. open audacity, select this portion, and through the filters menu,
look for the 'remove noise' option.
the first click will load this pattern as the 'hiss' that has to be
elminated. 3. now select the entire track, and again go back to the
same filter. clicking it again will eliminate
the noise/hiss from the entire track.
4: optional: adjust the EQ to correct other possible problems with
the recording's balance of each channel,
add salt, pepper, oregano, and other seasonings to taste.

Thanks for all the advice folks. Some more background:

1. This machine is going to be used for VoIP, so post-facto editing of
audio isn't possible. If you know a (say) 1000Hz filter that can be
implemented at the ALSA level I'd be glad to give it a shot.

2. I've tried all settings. Yes, the hiss (obviously) decreases when I
push down mic gain. However, an obvious side-effect of lowering mic
gain is, you guessed it, voice volume goes down and the person at the
other end of the line has to strain to make out what I'm saying.

3. I've tried recording without a mic attached and the hiss is still
there, so it's not an impedance mismatch (or whatever other technical
stuff sound engineers like to bandy about).

In my view, a properly-configured sound system should not be generating
hiss from the input at all, at any mic gain value, and this is confirmed
by running Winduhs on the machine where, lo! the hiss disappears.

Hence my conclusion that this is purely an ALSA issue and needs to be
tackled at the ALSA configuration level.

More advice/offers for help/commercial offers welcome.

Ofcourse you probably have tried this, but let me mention this:

0. Have you tried passing various values for model option[1] corresponding
   to your snd-hda-intel chipset (ALC269).

1. Trying with latest ALSA sources 1.0.23 instead of 1.0.21 ?

2. Not ALSA related, how about ditching ALSA and going with OSSv4[2] stack
which is also getting fairly good support, work great and its mixer is as
confusing/complex (or maybe more) as ALSA. And ofcourse it's licensed under
GPLv2 and BSDL, which makes it free software as well.

 2. Not ALSA related, how about ditching ALSA and going with OSSv4[2] stack
which is also getting fairly good support, work great and its mixer is as
confusing/complex (or maybe more) as ALSA. And ofcourse it's licensed
 under
GPLv2 and BSDL, which makes it free software as well.

+1 . I also faced the same problem using Debian Squeeze, shifted to OSSv4,
turned the capture ( in Debian squeeze top panel left side sound control is
for sound capture control not for volume control ) to mute , turned the
Digital-1 to full and everything started working fine , no hissing sound
whatsoever.

gora is correct.
also, have you tried to check the dell's internal circuitry is not
causing this problem?
depending on the level of hiss, here's a quick workaround:

1. ensure the recording has a few seconds of silence recorded: without
voice/music/whatever.
2. open audacity, select this portion, and through the filters menu,
look for the 'remove noise' option.
the first click will load this pattern as the 'hiss' that has to be elminated.
3. now select the entire track, and again go back to the same filter.
clicking it again will eliminate
the noise/hiss from the entire track.
4: optional: adjust the EQ to correct other possible problems with the
recording's balance of each channel,
add salt, pepper, oregano, and other seasonings to taste.

niyam

 Gora

[ilugd] [COMMERCIAL] ALSA hacker wanted

2011-01-08 Thread Raj Mathur (राज माथुर)
[Please send offers to me personally, not to the list]

Hi,

I have a Dell Optiplex 380 (a fairly new model) which is having problems
with excessive hiss when recording. Since I've tested without a mic and
still got the hiss, I've concluded that it's an ALSA problem. The issue
is probably incorrect routing of pins in the ALSA configuration, but I
don't know enough about ALSA to figure it out.

Any ALSA hackers here who can work out the correct ALSA configuration to
eliminate the hiss? I can make a machine available in Sector 7, NOIDA
or in Janakpuri, and will pay a reasonable amount for what should be a
couple of hours' work. Payment will be on successful configuration --
no money for just trying :) alsa-info.sh output is at the bottom of
this e-mail.

Please contact me via e-mail or on my mobile (9811066460) if you are
interested.

Regards,
