Re: Adding hard drives to 2007 Al iMac

How big is the HDD on the iMac? If it's under 2TB, I suggest getting 3TB
HDD, putting it in a firewire enclosure, Carbon Copy Cloning it, remove the
old HDD and install the 3TB one, and continue about the day.

Re: My first iMac

2011-04-30 Thread Mystic Prowler
Well, here's how it goes. If you have anything after Mac OS X 10.2.8, you
will have support for 128GB HD's on any machine that supports it. Depending
on your version of the iMac G4, anything 1GHz and below will not support a
128GB HDD or larger. However, if you have any machine that is capable of
running OS X 10.2.8 or later, regardless of type of Mac, you're in luck.

Go to: http://www.speedtools.com/ATA6
and it will unlock the 128GB limit on any mac you desire. It costs $25, and
takes only a minute to install, but it's money well spent because with one
copy you can install it on as many machines as you'd like.

has 768mb of ram in it. Also, would it make sense to hold off on the
ram so i can upgrade the hard drive beyond the original 80gb. Also if
i use 10.4.11 on it, can i use a 127GB or larger drive and still boot

Re: iMac G3 processor swap? 500 up to 600 Mhz...

2011-03-07 Thread Mystic Prowler
I have taken G3 iMacs apart before, and it's all a risky business. Some work
with each other, some won't even boot. It depends, though. A 500 to 600Mhz
board will have a more likely chance of working with it's components than
something of a greater processor frequency difference, just as long as the
logic board you're trying to replace is the same revision.

For $40, I have been able to purchase a working 500 Mhz iMac but,
aside from a working CRT, I think it has a tic less performance across
 the board.

Is the extra speed worth me taking everything apart to create a true
Franken G3 or should I just pull the harddrive and 1G of RAM from the
first machine, put it all in the slower chassis, and call it good?

At BEST I'm going to get a running 600 Mhz G3, with 1G of RAM, running

Maybe it has something to do with the ROM or components.

Those 2 revisions are similar, as long as the 2 have nearly or exactly
identical components such as firewire, ability for airport, basically as
long as the 2 logic boards look the same, then you're good to go. If you're
swapping out on something that one logic board has and the other doesn't,
then you might have boot problems and IDE detection problems. It seems to
me, however you should be fine.

G4 computers are older than intel Macs, but using a G3 is absolutely
unbearable. A G4 processor at least has Velocity Engine, which is very
useful and makes the processor more responsive. A G3, is like a dumbed
version of a G4. Even in today's world, A G4 is useful, a G3 is history. A
G5 is really good, because it's improved AltiVec code, but not only that
it's 64-bit. If you spend a little more money, idk, like $200-$250, you can
pick yourself up a nice single core 1.8 or 2GHz G5 Power Mac.

How many USB ports is normal to have?

2010-11-04 Thread Mystic Prowler
Hello, I just wanted to ask, because I think I have too many USB ports on my
main machine, my G4 iMac, an they're all used. I am not talking about JUST
the USB ports on the logic board, I have 4 hubs plugged in and all fully
used. Is that normal? I have 16 total USB ports on my G4 iMac, and all but
one are used up. That one that's not used is on the keyboard.

USB 1-Hub 1
USB 2-Keyboard w/hub 2
USB 3-Printer, HP Photosmart C3100
USB 4-Mouse
USB 5-SPARE---
USB 6-Stylus touchpad
USB 7-Backup 320GB HDD for Time Machine and CCC
USB 8-iPod connector cable, always plugged in
USB 9- Hub 3
USB 10-Bluetooth Adapter
USB 11-SD Card reader/ smart card reader, 12 in one
USB 12-External DVD drive
USB 13-500GB Maxtor One Touch HDD
USB 14-Webcam
USB 15-Receiver for Apple Remote
USB 16-Camera 2 for outside view

Is it normal to have this many USB ports?

Intelbook? I would keep all of the original names. But really, the new names
sound horrible. I really like all of the old names.

To think of it, the box scheme makes no sense anymore.

the Macbook and the Macbook pro should stay there. The air has to be the new
Macbook or iBook or it has to go. The mac mini has no reason there at all,
the iMac should be the lower end machine. THe mac pro should be the high end
machine and server. They should cut out the Xserve.

I have a feeling of something. Apple is as bad as it was before steve came
back. They have too many product lines, minimizing it's chances of getting
in the cash. One new CEO will rise up and re-innovate the company and remove
the company's many product lines like it had 13 years ago.

I recently got a PDQ (although for me it is the newest in my old mac

are usable for certain things, and my PowerBook 3400c almost approaches
being useful as an everyday laptop if it weren't for the low resolution
screen and slow processor. The PDQ, on the other hand, can handle many
things, like basic web browsing, iTunes, QuickTime videos, and even
competent multimedia editing when using old versions of photoshop or iMovie.
I've been using it to take notes in college, since the lack of wireless
capability reduces potential distractions and most of the time I don't need
 my PowerBook G4 in class.

I'm a big believer in the usefulness of old computers. My PowerBook 145b
has one of the most comfortable laptop keyboards I have ever used, and my
Apple //c has taught me more about programming than any modern tutorials,
though Basic is certainly not as useful as some of the more modern
 languages.

I really do find intel useful, but not the best. PowerPC was and always will
be the best. If Apple continues a different line of chips, they might name

Going away from intel means that Apple will increase the chances of the
Microsoft market domination to collapse. Intel did create the first

their marketing technique is horrible. I know and understand why Apple went

Malcom 'o Brian, you have a 17 iMac G4 800? THose are nice machines you
know, I have 2. One is a 17 1.25Ghz that WAS a 1Ghz but had it's logic
board replaced because of an unknown reason. My second iMac G4 is identical
to yours except it is a 15 screen, and it's internal IDE Bus failed. It is
running fine now with an external 300GB Firewire drive. Another iMac
saved =)

The previous owner of my iMac 800 said Whenever I think of that iMac, I
think of problems.
Now, this iMac is free or problems because of me! the only problem was the
IDE failure. I gave someone $30 and a GeForce 256MB 6200 AGP card on
craigslist, and they gave me this external drive. Nice and speedy iMac, only
now it has over 3.5x it's original 80GB storage capacity.

I am okay with PowerPC macs for now... mostly because leo is still

turned the energy saver option to Best for performance, and this machine

good 15 Powerbook G4 should do, as long as it can run leopard. I hate those
small screens on them smaller powerbooks and ibooks. I am one of those
people who need large screened laptops.

Re: iMac noise

2010-10-27 Thread Mystic Prowler
When I ran my iMac G5 ran at the automatic option, it felt like I was
running a crawling 1.5Ghz G4. Now that I turned on the Best option, I
don't care if it makes too much noise, as long as it isn't too loud, and to
make sure it doesn't overheat. I don't want that capacitor problem with my
Rev A iMac G5. With this option i set it to, It feels as if leopard has
started to run as fast as snow leopard does. There should be an option for
iMac G4 computers to change their clock speed, because i have one iMac G4
800 that has no internal HDD or DVD drive because the IDE bus FAILED. I boot
off of a firewire drive, and it works fine. If i can overclock this to
1.1GHz, they say that the machine will produce too much heat that it might
set on fire, and if i overclock it to 1Ghz it will be a little warm. I am
planning on overclocking it to 1.15GHz, because without the HDD and DVD
drive in there, I have room for a bunch of fans! Maybe even a small
water-cooled system.

If it works out, I might overclock it to 1.2Ghz, but that might produce so
much heat that only a water-cooled system will work with it. I can overclock
my 1.25Ghz iMac G4 to 1.67Ghz, but I need a giant fan (or 2) on the logic
board, and i will need to take out the HDD and CD drive. I wonder how you
overclock a flower pot...

Power Mac 6100 on the internet?

2010-10-26 Thread Mystic Prowler
I know that this is NOT the place to talk about this machine in particular,
but this also has to do with my iMac.

I recently found a network adapter to use with my PM 6100, and it surfs the
web, not like the fastest machine out there, but like an iMac G3 but with a
really old internet browser. I had enough skill to do everything manually
and got it to load up some web pages like google, low end mac, and system 7
today. I am trying to use the shared folder that I setup when i setup the
machine from my iMac G4 running leopard. The iMac is used to seeing many
machines day in and out for networking, but for some reason cannot detect my
PM 6100. I had this same problem from my sawtooth to my PM 9600 earlier, but
my PM 9600 was running OS 9, I don't want to brick my PM 6100 by doing
that. Right now I am running Mac OS 8.1 on the machine, and have all of the
basic settings done just to run it on the web.

My question is: What can i do to get my iMac G4 that is running leopard to
see my PM 6100 on the network and to access it? Also, I need a way for my PM
6100 to be able to access other machines because a 500MB HDD isn't too big,
and I need it to have network available storage like around 80GB that is on
my downstairs eMac.

Any suggestions? Software? Anything?

Re: Mac OS X Lion 10.7 is no longer a rumor!

2010-10-25 Thread Mystic Prowler
Yes it sure will be. Strange to know that some Macs shipped with OS X 10.5
and can only go to OS X 10.6.

My G4 sawtooth has a wide range of operating systems...
Mac OS 8.6-Mac OS X 10.5.8

some later lower end core duo machines shipped with leopard

I do think it is not going to be a list of unsupported processors, but more
of a bold statement of obsoleteness.
It's not just core duo and all of the early intel macs that will have no
more support, but I think that Apple is dropping support basically for ALL
32-bit intel macs. I don't understand My iMac G5 is 64-bit but Apple
doesn't support it anymore. If they make (It won't happen, though for a
FACT) a version of OS X 10.7 for G5's only, then i would be happy. because
OS X 10.6 is all about optimization and 64-bit stuff. G5's are 64-bit, so
why drop support for them?

Re: Is it bad for my iMac to use an external FW800 HD as Boot drive?

2010-10-18 Thread Mystic Prowler
it's not bad at all. I would prefer to have an internal drive to make sure I
have guaranteed speed on the system's boot, but If you really need to use an
external drive after all else fails including the IDE controllers
themselves, then okay.

The only downside is though if you use an internal drive, there is a
specific machine drive size limit. As for external drives, they can be as
big as they make them in terms of storage capacity.

And also, 250GB is not tiny! For an external drive, it is on the smaller
side, but for an internal, especially for PowerPC machines before the G5
era, it's huge! I have a G4 sawtooth that I am using right now that once
complained that the (now limit removed with proprietary software) HDD was
too big it is a 250GB IDE drive, and back then it could only see 128GB.

On my standards, here is my scale of drive sizes.

0=NOT USABLE=10GB
1=Miniscule=20GB
2=Small=30GB
3=Usable=40GB
4=Usable=60-80GB
5=Okay=100-160GB

7=Decent=250-300GB
