Re: Adding hard drives to 2007 Al iMac
How big is the HDD on the iMac? Re: My first iMac
Well, here's how it goes. If you have anything after Mac OS X 10.2.8, you will have support for 128GB HD's on any machine that supports it. Depending on your version of the iMac G4, anything 1GHz and below will not support a 128GB HDD or larger. However, if you have any machine that is capable of running OS X 10.2.8 or later, regardless of type of Mac, you're in luck. Go to: http://www.speedtools.com/ATA6 and it will unlock the 128GB limit on any mac you desire. It costs $25, and takes only a minute to install, but it's money well spent because with one copy you can install it on as many machines as you'd like. Re: iMac G3 processor swap? 500 up to 600 Mhz...
I have taken G3 iMacs apart before, and it's all a risky business. Some work with each other, some won't even boot. It depends, though. A 500 to 600Mhz board will have a more likely chance of working with it's components than something of a greater processor frequency difference, just as long as the logic board you're trying to replace is the same revision. Those 2 revisions are similar, as long as the 2 have nearly or exactly identical components such as firewire, ability for airport, basically as long as the 2 logic boards look the same, then you're good to go. If you're swapping out on something that one logic board has and the other doesn't, then you might have boot problems and IDE detection problems. It seems to me, however you should be fine. Re: Stupid question #216
G4 computers are older than intel Macs, but using a G3 is absolutely unbearable. A G4 processor at least has Velocity Engine, which is very useful and makes the processor more responsive. A G3, is like a dumbed version of a G4. Even in today's world, A G4 is useful, a G3 is history. A G5 is really good, because it's improved AltiVec code, but not only that it's 64-bit. If you spend a little more money, idk, like $200-$250, you can pick yourself up a nice single core 1.8 or 2GHz G5 Power Mac. Intelbook? I would keep all of the original names. But really, the new names sound horrible. I really like all of the old names. To think of it, the box scheme makes no sense anymore. the Macbook and the Macbook pro should stay there. The air has to be the new Macbook or iBook or it has to go. The mac mini has no reason there at all, the iMac should be the lower end machine. THe mac pro should be the high end machine and server. They should cut out the Xserve. I have a feeling of something. Apple is as bad as it was before steve came back. They have too many product lines, minimizing it's chances of getting in the cash. One new CEO will rise up and re-innovate the company and remove the company's many product lines like it had 13 years ago. -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. The PDQ, on the other hand, can handle many things, like basic web browsing, iTunes, QuickTime videos, and even competent multimedia editing when using old versions of photoshop or iMovie. Does anyone have use for really old macs these days? I do. I know this is off of topic, but oh well. I took a trip to the jurrasic today, and found my PowerBook 5300cs sitting on my desk. I recently got a new battery for it, so it is a little more useful than it used to be. The PowerPC 970-970fx CPU is inefficient COMPARED to today's processors, but this processor even today provides effective computing power. Re: iMac noise
When I ran my iMac G5 ran at the automatic option, it felt like I was running a crawling 1.5Ghz G4. Now that I turned on the Best option, I don't care if it makes too much noise, as long as it isn't too loud, and to make sure it doesn't overheat. I don't want that capacitor problem with my Rev A iMac G5. With this option i set it to, It feels as if leopard has started to run as fast as snow leopard does. There should be an option for iMac G4 computers to change their clock speed, because i have one iMac G4 800 that has no internal HDD or DVD drive because the IDE bus FAILED. I boot off of a firewire drive, and it works fine. If i can overclock this to 1.1GHz, they say that the machine will produce too much heat that it might set on fire, and if i overclock it to 1Ghz it will be a little warm. I am planning on overclocking it to 1.15GHz, because without the HDD and DVD drive in there, I have room for a bunch of fans! Maybe even a small water-cooled system. If it works out, I might overclock it to 1.2Ghz, but that might produce so much heat that only a water-cooled system will work with it. Power Mac 6100 on the internet?
I know that this is NOT the place to talk about this machine in particular, but this also has to do with my iMac. I recently found a network adapter to use with my PM 6100, and it surfs the web, not like the fastest machine out there, but like an iMac G3 but with a really old internet browser. I had enough skill to do everything manually and got it to load up some web pages like google, low end mac, and system 7 today. I am trying to use the shared folder that I setup when i setup the machine from my iMac G4 running leopard. The iMac is used to seeing many machines day in and out for networking, but for some reason cannot detect my PM 6100. I had this same problem from my sawtooth to my PM 9600 earlier, but my PM 9600 was running OS 9, I don't want to brick my PM 6100 by doing that. Right now I am running Mac OS 8.1 on the machine, and have all of the basic settings done just to run it on the web. My question is: What can i do to get my iMac G4 that is running leopard to see my PM 6100 on the network and to access it? Also, I need a way for my PM 6100 to be able to access other machines because a 500MB HDD isn't too big, and I need it to have network available storage like around 80GB that is on my downstairs eMac. Mac OS X Lion 10.7 is no longer a rumor!

Re: Mac OS X Lion 10.7 is no longer a rumor!
Yes it sure will be. Strange to know that some Macs shipped with OS X 10.5 and can only go to OS X 10.6. My G4 sawtooth has a wide range of operating systems... Mac OS 8.6-Mac OS X 10.5.8 some later lower end core duo machines shipped with leopard I do think it is not going to be a list of unsupported processors, but more of a bold statement of obsoleteness. It's not just core duo and all of the early intel macs that will have no more support, but I think that Apple is dropping support basically for ALL 32-bit intel macs. I don't understand My iMac G5 is 64-bit but Apple doesn't support it anymore. If they make (It won't happen, though for a FACT) a version of OS X 10.7 for G5's only, then i would be happy. because OS X 10.6 is all about optimization and 64-bit stuff. G5's are 64-bit, so why drop support for them? -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. Re: Internal IDE controller failure?
There is a bong noise when it starts up. The system starts up with the external drive as if nothing happened to the system at all. I don't care about swapping the motherboards for my iMac anymore as a large sized external firewire drive fixed the problems. this once problematic iMac is now happy that I am it's current owner. -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. This iMac is not in a projectile filled environment, it's just that this is the best protection i could get for it, and it is well worth it because now it is ultimately protected against wear and tear. -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. Re: Is it bad for my iMac to use an external FW800 HD as Boot drive?
it's not bad at all. I would prefer to have an internal drive to make sure I have guaranteed speed on the system's boot, but If you really need to use an external drive after all else fails including the IDE controllers themselves, then okay. The only downside is though if you use an internal drive, there is a specific machine drive size limit. As for external drives, they can be as big as they make them in terms of storage capacity. -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. Re: Is it bad for my iMac to use an external FW800 HD as Boot drive?
And also, 250GB is not tiny! For an external drive, it is on the smaller side, but for an internal, especially for PowerPC machines before the G5 era, it's huge! I have a G4 sawtooth that I am using right now that once complained that the (now limit removed with proprietary software) HDD was too big it is a 250GB IDE drive, and back then it could only see 128GB. On my standards, here is my scale of drive sizes. 0=NOT USABLE=10GB 1=Miniscule=20GB 2=Small=30GB 3=Usable=40GB 4=Usable=60-80GB 5=Okay=100-160GB 6=Better=200-250GB 7=Decent=250-300GB 8=Good=300-700GB 9=Sweet=700GB-1TB 10=Optimal=2TB+ -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs.
