Re: [info-tech] Summer Recycling
Scott, Here is what I have (rough counts) CRT monitors - 150 PC's - 205 I also have about 10 laser printers, a couple of TVs, about 20 old ethernet switches, 10 dead UPS, and 5 old servers. Plus keyboards, mice, and misc small stuff.. We are ready now, but I will need a few days notice so I can make sure the forklift is charged and people are prepared. If we can plan for a Monday-Thursday I can make sure I have people here to help with getting things loaded. I have about 15 pallets here for us to use (some loaded with monitors, some empty) Thanks! Before we get into this, understand this is an honest no holds barred review. I will use some rough and possibly insulting language, but if you read it with an open mind, I think there is some valuable information, even if it is presented rather vividly. I will likely be submitting this same review word for word to Amazon and some other sites. A few years back, there was a kid who was about 14 who had an IQ of about 40, but he could listen to a piece of music once and be able to play it on a piano note for note. This ability really made him kind of cool, but at the end of the day, you just can't escape that he's still retarded. That's the Ipad in a nutshell. Despite that, I am giving this a solid buy recommendation for schools. If that makes no sense, read on, and it will. If I try to compare this to windows 7, and I will, it's kinda worthless. The HP Slate is coming out in a couple months, and it will do everything that an IPad does, and everything that a windows 7 laptop does, and costs less, or about the same actually. If you are a computer geek, like me, then the slate is a much better product. But we use the Kindle here a lot. Mainly the kindle is used is remedial reading and special-ed because the kindle will read aloud to a student, showing them the word being pronounced. Like most programs of this nature, it's got it's problems, most notably lousy inflection and pacing. But it's no worse than anything out there, and allows virtually any book to be used without additional processing. The Ipad has a Kindle app, and though I haven't fully tested it, I have no reason to think it functions any different. Now don't get me wrong, I like the kindle, for me. But I'm not buying for me. Sure, the battery life rocks. Two weeks of a single charge, that is just awesome, the ability to buy through the cellular network without buying another account? Priceless. But the weak point on a kindle has always been it's administration. Basically, if it's on there, the kid has access to it. That includes google searches for porn. On the Ipad, if I don't want a kid to surf the internet, they don't. If I don't want them to load apps, they don't. You tube? Email? Whatever, they don't, or should I say they can't. As you all know, keeping kids out of where they do not belong is always a losing battle, special-ed is even more of a challenge than the other students. That's the cool part as far as actually useful stuff goes. Sure, there are a lot of educational apps, great, great. The predictive text feature is awful from what I've seen of it, I'm working on installing an app that is supposed to be much better. But really, that's the business end of the review. Now there's the fun stuff, or thing I should say. Google Maps is included with the Ipad, and for a damn good reason. It takes total advantage of the multitouch interface. This is beyond ubercool. This one goes straight to Geek Nirvana. I fell in lust with Google Maps, and once I showed it to my girlfriend and her daughter, they proceeded to fight over it for an hour. If you have not tried this, there is just no explaining how awesome this feature is. If I could plug in GPS, it would probably throw me into a transcendental state where I spent he next 20 years in a darkened room playing with the user interface and creating the Church of Jobs. Or at least until the battery died. Ok, so here's the summary. This is a niche market thing. It's great for schools and especially special-ed. But if you are looking

Re: [info-tech] phones/intercom
Jackie, I think part of is the key. It is tough to rely on the phone system alone as an intercom because it does not cover the halls and rooms without phones. That said, you can easily tie most phone systems to an paging amp to get the best of both using paging groups. You will want to make sure the group page does not activate the microphones on the phones (this should not be an issue for most vendors), and check for delay between the page and output to the phones. My guess is Lance is experiencing echo caused by delay (paging output hits the hall speakers before the phones, or the opposite). I have had success both ways. The best solution is a speaker in every room. You could still tie the phone system to it and use that as a source. With budgets being what they are, though, you could save some money by using the classroom phones as part of the paging system. [info-tech] Computer repair..
Found this on a blog (Tom Hafemann) and had to re-post Jim Hey All, I have fixed, repaired, and engineered many computer systems over the past 17 years. I am often learning new things. It is a lot of fun and quite entertaining, especially for someone who is OCD like me. :) Recently, something new and strange came across my desk. It started out like a normal project. A fairly new laptop computer that had a bad video card. One long beep followed by two short beeps. As most of you may know, laptop computers have most everything integrated onto the motherboard. So, as I expected, I was looking at a motherboard replacement. This was an HP dv9825nr. As I started looking for a motherboard, I was seeing $350ish dollars. I took this laptop apart. WHAT A MESS. I stopped counting at 60 screws, and I still hadn't gotten the motherboard out of the plastic yet. It took nearly 30 minutes just to get the motherboard out of the plastic. As I talked with the customer, spending that kind of money on a repair was just not worth it. If you add the cost of the motherboard, labor, and the fact that the computer is about 2 years old, it might be worth investing in another laptop. In my search I found some unusual repair methods, particularly geared to motherboard repair for the nvidia video chipset and the Lenovo T41. There is this process called reflow where you heat the motherboard with a propane torch or heat gun to fix the video chipset problems. WTH is up with that. Next they will be showing the process of using a hammer to fix any keyboard. However, I saw a bunch of these articles, and after consulting with the customer, we decided to give it a try. After all, what was the worst that could happen, bbq motherboard? So, I went down to the local hardware store and rented a heat gun. I protected all of the plastic components with aluminum foil so they wouldn't melt and began to heat the motherboard. I did this for about 10 minutes. I let it sit overnight. I then began the tedious process of putting this silly thing back together. I had to undo it 4-5 times simply because I forgot to fish some wire through or attach something. This is perhaps the worse laptop I have ever taken apart. Anyway, I got it all back together and wouldn't you know it, IT WORKED. Well I'll be dog gone. So now, I have a new tool to add to my computer repair kit. 1 heat gun.
Re: [info-tech] VOIP
Karl, We have Mitel IP controllers, tied with IP trunks between them. I think ours work very well, but I did the work, so I may be biased VoIP is great, as long as you understand what it takes for a successful implementation. I am not a big fan of the hybrid systems, simply based on the way most of them communicate. I know some people would argue with me on that one, so I would be more than happy to explain that one if somebody is actually curious... :) The key to VoIP is QoS and solid connections. VoIP uses little bandwidth, and if prioritization is in place (DSCP, VLAN QoS, etc.) you should not run into too many issues as far as the IP communication is concerned. One thing that can be an issue is the quality of the land lines coming in. We do not have a T-1 (PRI) yet, so like most schools we are relying on the regular CO lines coming in. Any issues you have with these will be amplified with an IP based system. All of the IP based systems I have dealt with have line measuring tools to compensate for this, but if they are not run, or are not used correctly, you can have issues. This will not be an issue with a T-1 or a PRI. Probably more information than anyone wanted... :) Jim Kerns, Technology Director Spencer Community Schools 23 East 7th St P.O. RE: [info-tech] Smartboards
We have about 40, and all I have had to do so far other than typical troubleshooting (knock on wood) is replace one lamp. All of ours except 2 are wall mounted with a seperate projector, though, so that may have something to do with it. We have had audio issues, but that is unrelated to the Smartboards themselves, it was more of a programming issue on the Crestron equipment from information I have. I do not think we have had the issues here with their support, but I do not think we have really used it much either, so I cannot add anything to that conversation. Sorry to hear about your troubles with them... Jim Stanzel, Matt mstan...@rdi1.com 5/7/2009 4:01 PM We've been through support nightmares with SmartTech at Sheldon. Parts take 6-8 weeks to arrive, phone calls and emails go unanswered, and when they do reply (by phone or email) it takes days or even weeks to get a technician who is familiar with the issue. In other words, it takes significant trouble to get to a higher-level support technician at Smart who does something other than read from their canned-answer book. One of the power supplies inside of the 2000i and 3000i mobile Smartboards has gone out on almost all of the units, and of course, this part isn't covered under warranty, and the only place to get one is from SmartTech themselves for $120+. The 600i units have been nothing but trouble also, and it appears that they have gone so far as to cancel that line now. I think between the front- and rear-projection units, Sheldon owns about 32 Smartboard products, and the only units that we haven't had trouble with are the standalone wall-mounted boards with a separately-purchased projector. Just FYI, maybe save somebody some troubleshooting steps. Jim Scott Fosseen sfoss...@aea8.k12.ia.us 3/30/2009 5:12 PM Provided is a link to a scanner that should detect the presence of the Conficker worm. It comes from a link I trust so I believe it is safe to run on your networks. The tool can scan all the active computers on your network for the worm. FYI: here is the link threads http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=6097 http://honeynet.org/node/388 --- Start by downloading http://www.doxpara.com/scs.zip (This is a link from the honeynet.org/node/388 page) to a windows workstation. Once downloaded extract the files. The extracted SCS folder contains another SCS folder. Move the second folder to the root of the C:\ drive so all the files are in C:\SCS Open up a 'Command' prompt type 'c:' type 'cd \scs' Scan the local machine first by typing: 'scanner localhost' The results will show in the window when complete. -- To scan the network, type: 'scs start-ip end-ip scslog.txt' where start-ip is the lowest IP address you want to scan (10.147.0.1) end-ip is the highest IP address you want to scan (10.147.0.254) The results will be saved to c:\scs\scslog.txt -- Note: When running 'scs.exe' it takes a long time to scan unassigned IP addresses. I would recommend that if you have a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 that you run the program several times on ranges that you know have computers. Check your DHCP server and verify the high and low IP addresses that are currently assigned to get your starting place. I would also run against server IP addresses. If you run the program several times change the 'scslog.txt' filename to a unique name for every scan. Another note: When using the redirect '' all output that would typically show on the screen is redirected to the text file. Once you launch the 'scs' command the screen will not show anything. When the program is done the c:\ prompt will return. --- Open the scslog.txt file with notepad to see the results of the scan. Thanks Scott. We were just questioning that here in Spencer... Scott Fosseen [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1/19/2007 9:20 AM This is an article that appears in the January 2007 School Leaders Update. The author of the article is Carol Greta with the DE. Records Retention Recently there was an article on December 8 in eSchool News that was VERY confusing. It referenced a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision about schools retaining email. Several schools (and AEAs) have raised questions about this. THERE IS NO SUCH SUPREME COURT RULING. What happened was that federal rules of civil procedure were approved by the Court, and certain of the rules dealt with production of email correspondence during litigation. The article in eSchool News not only implied, but also outright stated that schools would be regulated by the rules. Here's what the education community needs to know: The federal rules are NOTHING NEW. AEAs and LEAs have always been required to retain certain documents, and the electronic nature of the document is determinative of NOTHING. For instance, if the email is a complaint, treat it as if it was sent by the Post Office. While there are very few federal or state laws that govern this, the DE's Uniform Administrative Procedures manual has two full pages (in Chapter 14) of suggested retention periods for various records. The link to the UAP is: http://www.iowa.gov/educate/content/view/129/358/. Remember that electronic records are records also. An email from a parent or taxpayer or staff member is to be treated no differently than if the communication came from the Post Office. A selected few examples from the UAP are as follows: Correspondence: * Personnel correspondence, 7 years after termination * General correspondence, 3 years or as long as administratively useful or of historical value Legal Documents: * Written contracts, 10 years beyond end of contract * Insurance policies, 3 years after expiration Payroll: * Payroll journals, 60 years * All income tax forms (W-2s, W-4s, 1099s, etc.), 5 years _ Scott Fosseen - Systems Engineer - Prairie Lakes AEA http://www.aea8.k12.ia.us/tech _ This is to inform you that a memo will be issued today regarding the subject mentioned above. - memo sent by Microsoft Legal Affairs Division _ --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus on the server aea8.k12.ia.us] - Archived messages from this list can be found at: http://www.mail ( http://www.mail/ )-archive.com/info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us/ -
Re: [info-tech] Web IEPs
We had something similar. Initially we checked the use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections in internet options, and that helped, but did not solve it entirely. We had to open a hole in our firewall and completely bypass our proxy server for the web IEP site to completely solve it. I do not have the address handy, but I can send it to you in the morning if you think it might help. If you do not have a proxy server, this is probably not very helpful :) Jim Kerns Spencer Community Schools 23 East 7th St P.O. Re: [info-tech] Wireless
We have used 3COM and Proxim, both work well. In our new middle school, we will be usingExtreme gear to match the rest of the switches on our network. One of the things to watch for regardless of vendor is the firmware. It seems manyof them ship without the latest version, and just getting that up to speed will save headaches. One thing I really like about the 3COM gear is the site survey tool. You only need the 3CRPAG175 PCMCIA card. It allows you to place AP's on carts and work your way through a building and it will identify every AP, every SSID, whether it is part of your network or not, and give you all of the info you need (strength of signal, channel the AP is on, encryption, type of AP, etc). One of the main attractions of the wireless is the ability to take a mobile lab into the classroom, or really wherever you need it. Our regular labs are always full, and this just adds a little flexibility. Special Education is also a consideration now with web IEP's. All of our teachers who do IEP's have laptops and the wireless gives them the ability to work with parents, etc outside of the regular classroom. As I upgrade my network, I try to put wireless in at the same time.I have a long way to go, but I can see the benefits right away. That said, it also adds some headaches. You have to consider that once installed, your networkis extended outside the walls of your buildings. Security becomes a bigger concern. Printers are also an issue. I have a printer that travels with the mobile lab, HP makes a wireless jet direct card that works well. Otherwise you are installing multiple printers to cover different parts of the building, and of course the students then have to choose the right one. Hope that helps a little. Re: [info-tech] printers
Are the IP addresses the same as well? Are they getting addresses via DHCP? This is just a guess, but if the printers were off all summer, and they get addresses via DHCP, the DHCP lease might be up and they got new IP addresses. Glad to hear you are still kicking around over there! Jim [EMAIL PROTECTED] 8/24/2005 3:18 PM Quick problem/question for all--(By the way, welcome back to another year!):Throughout the district, I set up multiple computers. In connecting them to printers via IP protocol, I am having success with some and failure with others. I printed off the printer configurations for the printers, and they are exactly the same. This has been happening in all the buildings. I am working with OS TIger on the Macs, and either HP 4100's or 4000's. I have found a way around to print by using Appletalk, but really wanted to get away from this as much as possible. Do I reset the printers and try again? I even downloaded printer drivers to see if that would help but no luck. Anybody with more expertise than me? Thanks much!-Jackie

Re: [info-tech] Computer Security...
Here you go. Jim Kerns Jr. District Network Administrator Spencer Community Schools [EMAIL PROTECTED] (712)262-0339 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2/27/2004 8:53:14 AM Good morning- We have had some people objecting to our computer security here in Fort Dodge, and I wanted to check into what everyone else allows people to do on the computers in the classroom. We are slowly rolling out a program called Deep Freeze, which discards all changes to the computer on reboot. With our WindowsXP machines, we have successfully redirected the user's desktop, favorites, my documents and most system settings to a network folder, which follows the user from one XP machine to another. So, in your districts, what is the practice or policy for allowing the following modifications to a user computer: Desktop Settings - Do you allow changes to Backgrouds, shortcuts on the desktop, screen savers, etc We have found it is easier to allow staff to control ther own desktop, screensaver, etc. It gives them some ownership I guess. Initially we had roaming profiles, but at the time did not have the bandwidth to support it. There info is stored on the network though (documents, etc.). This allows for quick re-imaging if a machine has problems. Do you allow saving to the local hard drive, or restrict saving to the network only They save to the network. How about disk space quotas - how much do you allow a user to store on the network 100 MB except for special circumstances (i.e. music program .mp3 and .wav files) Use of e-mail programs - do you have district supported programs, or can they use anything they want We have two ways to access email, the Groupwise client and WebAccess. No other way is supported. Installing programs on the machine - both district-supported and personal software We only allow district supported software, and of course no one brings software in and intalls it without our knowledge. That would just be wrong. ;) Do you allow computers to be used without any connection to the network Special circumstances only. Do you allow people to connect personal peripherals to the computer that require software - digital cameras, zip drives, cd-burners, scanners, etc... I am assuming by personal you mean they own the hardware. The answer to that is no. We have had some problems with that in the past. Someone buys the Staples special scanner, installs it, and it becomes our problem when the thing doesn't work the way it is supposed to or it screws something else up. As if we all don't have enough to do. In what method do you suggest people move data from school to home for work - usb flash keys, floppy, e-mail We find email is the easiest. If it is large (presentation, etc.) we will let them sign out a laptop. Sorry for all of the questions. We are trying to get some baseline data for security that other schools are using. If you would help us out, I would appreciate it. I would be happy to compile all of the data and return it to the list, should there be any interest for that. Again, thanks for any help!!!
