If you are willing to do that, that would be great. I got a product key already
but I must have scratched my dvd somehow. But I just tried loading Vista also
and I get the same error message. So now I don't think it is Windows 7.

[info-tech] info-tech] Lightspeed Custom Reports

2009-02-24 Thread Mueller, Mitch
I'm trying to make up some custom reports for our teachers here. But when I'm
in lightspeed and under the reports tab, custom reports. I go to the Manage
Custom Reports but I do not find anywhere that I can make a custom report. I
have looked on the lightspeed wiki and it shows me where I should find it but
do not see anything. Anyone have any idea. I did do the upgrade to 7.02.00 so
you know. If you have any help for me please let me know.

[info-tech] Teacher lock-down

2009-02-12 Thread Mueller, Mitch
As I'm getting ready for the 2009-2010 school year I need a little help from
you guys again. What I'm looking for is a list of what privileges you give
your teachers. As for what they can and can't do on their systems. I'm
looking to lock them down pretty tight but I have to have other schools input
before I can do this. So if your teachers are locked down please let me know
what they can do as for running programs, installing programs, and then some.

Thanks

RE: [info-tech] Technology Associate

2009-02-12 Thread Mueller, Mitch
Same here. I really don't have an associate either but I have a few teachers
that are very good with the technology in each of our building. Also our Dean
of Students is always up to date with their technology. And we also have a
secretary that does help out at the elementary building but just does a little
bit when she can. Nothing major like Karl's got.

I don't have an associate per-se she is hired as a secretary. She is
half time and she helps with a variety of things. There is not a hard
and fast job description, but she helps with Web updates, Project
EASIER, Student password resets, she does a little front-line trouble
shooting (like is it plugged in), she does a lot with JMC, creates
documents and reports for me and proofs things that I need to send
out. Actually without her I would never be able to twitter or check
facebook during the day ;) This is my second here with a person in
this capacity and she was hired to help when I took on curriculum
duties so she does help a lot with those as well. Lance if you need
anything more formal just drop me a note.

RE: [info-tech] Updating Computers

2009-02-11 Thread Mueller, Mitch
That is kind of the answer I have been looking for. I was told not to do a
WSUS server but just to know that my computers are up to date. I was told to
keep it out of my network but at least I do know if they are getting done that
way.

We also use WSUS and Group Policy. Once it is set up, approving or declining
updates isn't a big deal. Not compared to the time you would spend if you
physically had to go and touch every machine. I think that just "trusting" that
your end users to apply the updates wouldn't give you the oversight as to
whether or not patches were being applied as desired. With WSUS you have the
option to verify which machines are compliant and which are lacking updates.
Then, if you have to physically go to one or two machines that are having
issues, at least the other 99% are fully patched to your specifications. Also,
if you have certain computers that run mission critical apps, you would be able
to create a special schedule to apply updates to these machines. Then, your
everyday use PC's are patched and running without any risk of security exploits
and all of the other stuff that Microsoft says could happen if you don't
update. JMO...

I'm not so concerned with all the security updates and such with the Macs that
I would be with the PC environment. I think
it would be a nightmare to continually have to touch each computer. Unless I
can run them all around the same time . . . I don't mess with having different
versions of everything running. That gets too crazy with different versions of
software.

I think you should ask for all new computers on the Mac platform if you can't
let them do it nor do it how the others have suggested. Then you don't have to
worry about it. JK

I spoke with you last week about scheduling a presentation at your Technology
Coordinator meeting. I noticed you had time on March 19th and April 16th.
Since we are out of state - we usually conduct these presentations using WebEx.
 Is this possible?

Also, we have several topics we could present on. Which one would be of
interest to your AEA?

Virtualization VooDoo Series
Series One covers VMWare VI3 Server and Storage consolidation through
virtualization. We'll also discuss VMWare's key features, how to size your
environment and some technological advances on implementing a cost effective
solution for server & storage consolidation.

Series Two - Covers the features & advantages of VDI Desktop Virtualization and
how to setup low cost solutions for student labs, desktop replacement, and
laptop users.

Series Three - This series will provide you with Storage Virtualization
concepts along with VMware Consolidated Backup information. We will also
discuss how to optimize your VMware environment in terms of performance, backup
and disaster recovery.

Email Archival
We will discuss the Email Archival compliance issues Districts are facing.
We'll review
The three top technologies used in providing email archival today (RFC-822,
Journaling & Log shipping/Replication) along with each method's pros & cons.

Backup & Archival
We'll discuss the traditional Backup methodologies versus more advanced
techniques. We also highlight our signature backup solution which is used
predominately by the Ohio ITC's.

Storage Strategies
We'll discuss traditional storage methodologies versus File & Block level
virtualization. We'll highlight the key features of storage virtualization
along with some of the new hybrid offerings - combining server Virtualization &
Storage Virtualization in a single appliance.

We do not. We use Win 2003 for our thin clients. The clients boot using
a Linux kernel but it takes them straight into the RDP session. No user
interaction with Linux.

Do you guys use the LTSP from linux to do the terminal services at
Okoboji? I was told that you might have been the school that does that
with teacher laptops. Just wondering because we are looking to change a
bunch of stuff around over this summer since I screwed up my domain
somehow. Anyway we were thinking about going to linux. I don't know
much about it but my high school principal does. We thought we could
save a bunch on license fees by doing this and it would be easier for me
to manage.

I have also tested with this, and the biggest problem I have run into is
getting the wireless to work without effort from the user, let alone me
finding drivers that will work and getting them installed. NDISwrapper
works, but not without much hassle. Has anyone else tested with the
wireless part in play? It works nicely with certain wireless cards, but
none of those happen to be installed in the laptops here.

I've been thinking about the same thing the past few days. I put the
newest version of OpenSuse using KDE 4 on a desktop here, it joined the
AD domain easily and everything works really smoothly with no effort on
my part. I really like a lot of the new things in KDE 4 already. I
totally agree that students would have the least amount of trouble
changing, but I've seen a few little things that staff would like too.

More fuel for the open source gang, sure would be tempting to switch but
having teachers change, that's another story. I think the kids would be
more willing. If KD4 could work within its typical framework (smaller
OS, quicker, needs less memory), this would be interesting to test with
a few groups of students. One could ask for volunteers from the students
to see who would be interested. (The bigger hassle would be keeping
these Gateway laptops alive)

I think LightSpeed is even working on a client for such...

Yes, I feel it is easy however I have a long history with terminal services
(about 8 years) so editing any TS files for me is not a big deal. Please look
at page 13 of the install manual I sent a little while ago so that you
understand how it will setup under terminal services before you buy it. You
probably have the same install manual included with the demo software.

LanSchool does that and also allows teachers control for teaching a class. For
example a teacher using the media center with her class can blank the screens
of the thin clients with say a message like "eyes on the teacher please". Then
she can release the screens when ready. Keeps them from screwing around and not
paying attention. It is also very reasonably priced.. The media center person
can watch the desktops lock the keyboards, snap shot the screens , etc.

Mitch,
I use Boztek VENM Console 2009. It uses VNC (I use Ultra w/ encryption) It is a
download that is really cheap. I bought 1 admin license for $59. It works
pretty well, and you can do a bunch of scripting things with it. I do not use
it with the thin clients we have. For those I just hop on the thin client
server and remote control them. It saves a bunch of trips to the other
buildings because I just remote in when possible and fix things and walk people
through things. The software is updated often (I think I have had 4 last week)
to fix bugs and add features.
Then best part is the kids know that I can pop on there computer at any time,
so every time the screen flickers they think it is me looking in on them. lol

Mitch,
I use Boztek VENM Console 2009.
Then best part is the kids know that I can pop on there computer at any time,
so every time the screen flickers they think it is me looking in on them. lol

Ok. Well that kinda of stinks. My terminal server is located on a windows

LanSchool does that and also allows teachers control for teaching a class. For
example a teacher using the media center with her class can blank the screens
of the thin clients with say a message like "eyes on the teacher please". Then
she can release the screens when ready. Keeps them from screwing around and not
paying attention. It is also very reasonably priced. The media center person
can watch the desktops lock the keyboards, snap shot the screens , etc.

After setting the logon user for the 3 services, did you restart those services?

Do you have the settings correct for the other two sections of that article?

Sounds like you need to divide and conquer.

First, figure out all problems on the inside of your network that pertain to
LightSpeed, ie users not showing up on reports, sites not being blocked.
Second, figure out the problems with a single machine and using LightSpeed
Guide, ie sites not being blocked, connection to the server from an outside
address (firewall rules), getting updates while off the school network
Third, tackle the terminal services issue.

Have you tried LightSpeed support? They are usually pretty helpful in assisting
with setup/functionality issues.

Hey all,
Yesterday I attended an online seminar showing how lightspeeds new plugin for

It was very cool and efficient.
Who out there is using lightspeed for virus protection and filtering? Can I
get a show of hands?
How about a user group - even a virtual one, that can help with hammering out
policies and such?

We have two mobile labs in our elementary. One thing I have done is to have a
wireless access point set up on the cart itself. When the mobile lab is in a
classroom, the base is then connected to the network in the classroom, thus
keeping a strong signal for the mobile lab.

There is also a printer on the cart connected to the access point to provide
for printing to be done in the classroom where the lab is located.

Just info to share for what it is worth.

|
| Our truck will hold 12 pallets. Each pallet will roughly hold 20-25

|
| What I need to know at this point is how much stuff is out there so
that I
| can gauge how many stops I will have to make or if I will need to set
up a
| satellite site in a centralized location for schools to drop at.
|
| $5 per Computer Monitor
| $8 per Television
| $1 per Printer/Copier/Fax
| CPU's and Miscellanious equipment will once again be free.
|
| Please pass the word and help me get a feel for how much we will be
| picking up during this run. I would rather set up a satellite site
for
| drop offs as a lot of the smaller districts would not have to
palletize

RE: [info-tech] computer misuse policies.

2008-10-28 Thread Mueller, Mitch
We here at Emmetsburg are very strict. Since we have enforced this new policy
we haven't had as many kids misusing the computer. Our policy starts with the
first offense being 6 weeks no computers. By that we mean no computer at all,
even if they are currently enrolled into a computer class they will still have
no computer usage. The students are told that they will have to just do their
homework at home. When a class goes into use the computer from lets our U.S.
History class the student will still get no computer privileges. The second
offense is then bumped up to 9 weeks or a whole quarters worth of no computers.
After that their third offense is 365 days from the time they lose it. We
consider anything misusage also. For instance if they do try to get past the
filter, plays online games, games on windows, chatting and that is about it.
We do allow personal email because the kids do college classes online. I guess
we have never had a student hack into A.D. or look at teachers files before so
if that comes up the punishment may be a little stricter. If you have any more
questions feel free to ask but I got all the info I can get to you.

We make exceptions for games when a teacher requests it for educational
purposes and the policy states as much. For instance the SCI rooms have access
to some online 'learning' games. All other games sites are a violation. Our
filter blocks on the Games category. We also disable thumb drives on student

Our policy states that any attempt to bypass school proxies and/or filters is a
violation of the AUP and the offender is subject to suspension of privileges.

We usually take away all computer access during the regular school day for 2
weeks for 1st offense. Meaning, those without privileges have to come in before
or after school to do any computer work at school. With as much work as we do
on computers here we rarely have 2nd offenses, but the time goes up from there.
Last year one student lost privileges for a whole quarter. Just this morning I
re-instated 3 students that were found to be playing games.

I use a Freeguard 100 filtering device at the gateway at the school, but it
cannot filter https traffic, because it is secure traffic. So I also use
www.opendns.com<http://www.opendns.com> to block the dns names, which also
stops https sites. OpenDNS has category blocking and proxies is one of it's
categories. So far, I'm pretty impressed by how many it gets. I've been

it's free.

You're saying you don't have all that many offenses huh? We used to until the
kids were told that we are able to watch every move they make. Which we can't
really but with LightSpeed we can do a pretty good job at it. Our policy is 5
weeks 1st offense, 9 weeks 2nd offense and the 3rd means you lose it for a full
year. So even if they lose it at with only 15 days left of school then they
have to go a full year before they get it back. That mean not only just to use
in the library but even if they take a computer class they do not have computer
privileges for that class. They would have to do their work at home.

Mitch,

You need to configure your HyperTerminal session with the following settings,

Bits per second - 19200
Data bits - 8
Parity - None
Stop bits - 1
Flow control - Xon/Xoff

After you have established your HyperTerminal session to the HP Switch hit the
Enter key twice.

RE: [info-tech] Aplington-Parkersburg High School is a Finalist in the Henkel Helps Schools Contest

2008-10-08 Thread Mueller, Mitch

Congratulations!

Ms. Lynne Mulder nominated Aplington-Parkersburg High School for a $25,000
prize from Henkel Helps Schools to improve your school, and our judges have
selected your school as one of 10 finalists! Winners will be chosen by online,
public voting.
Henke l is one of the country's largest marketers of household brands,
including Dial(r) soaps, Purex(r) laundry detergents, Renuzit(r) air
fresheners, Loctite(r) adhesives and Right Guard(r) antiperspirants.
Here was the entry for your school:
On May 25, 2008 an F5 tornado destroyed a third of the community of
Parkersburg, IA. The high school was destroyed. High Schoolers will be
attending the Middle School in Aplington making cramped quarters this school
year, but everyone is determined to make it work. The construction of a new
school will begin soon with the goal of being in it by the start of the
2009-2010 school year. $25000 could be used in so many areas, new textbooks are
needed, desks, computers, classroom equipment, sound equipment for the
auditorium, the list goes on and on as so much was lost or damaged. The
students have stepped up to help with cleanup in the community as well as
hepling to get the other school buildings rearranged to house more students. It
would be a wonderful reward for them to receive a grant such as this. So many
of the students lost their own homes yet they want to continue helping others.
My own children lost their granparents to the storm and they would like to make
a contribution to the school in their honor. The students wil l face many
emotional challenges this year in addition to the academic challenges of high
school. Any contibution lets them know people care for them and want them to
succeed and show that "Falcons Rise Again!"
>From the more than 1,500 entries we received, our judges have narrowed the
>field to the top 10 nominations, and now it's up to you, your students, staff
>and the community to help Aplington-Parkersburg High School win the $25,000
>grand prize for renovations to your school, as nominated by Ms. Mulder. Two
>runners up will each receive a check for $2,500.
We will be announcing the Top 10 through news releases to the national media,
as well as media in your area the week of October 6. Please help us spread the
word, and help your school win!
All you have to do is tell your students, staff and your community to visit
www.henkelhelps.com from October 6th - October 19th to vote for your school.
Each valid e-mail address will be allowed one vote per day. The school with the
most votes at the end of the voting period will win $25,000 and a visit from H
enkel representatives the week of October 27. We will work with the grand prize
winner to set up an assembly for the check presentation. Official rules for the
contest are on the Web site as well.

Don't forget that anyone, nationwide, with a valid e-mail can vote. Get
everyone involved - and don't forget about your local media. If you do have
contact with the media, please let me know, as I can help with follow up and
get them any information necessary.
I also need your help in securing a few photos of your school, including a
picture of the entire building, as well as a few that highlight the areas that
Ms. Mulder pointed out in her nomination. These will be used on the
www.henkelhelps.com Web site. You can e-mail them to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The sooner we can get these, the better - so thank you in advance for your
quick cooperation!
Again, on behalf of Henkel, I congratulate you and wish your schoo l the best
of luck. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I'm
happy to help however I can.
Best,
Melissa Evans

Mitch,

We use it. I had some issues with the sound when I first set it up. What
specifically is happening? I remember I had to change the windows
startup sound file so the user had a chance to adjust the volume once
logged in. It was always blasted at log in. So, I changed that sound
file to silence. Then once in they could adjust the volume as to not
blow their eardrums out.

We bought three Samsung 40" LCD TVs from CDWG this summer and placed them on a
cart along with a 15' VGA cable and HDMI DVD player. Less than $1,100 for
everything. Easy to setup and can be moved easily. They are crystal clear and
can be seen from the back of a normal sized classroom. We are going to talk
about what to do in the future later this fall with input from the teachers
that have had mounted projectors, projectors on their cart, and the LCD

The debate of mounting or not to mount projectors in the classroom continues on
here in SC.
At one time, somebody mentioned they were switching to LCD's instead of
projectors.
If anybody has purchased LCD's for the classroom, I have a few questions.
What size is appropriate for a 25 student classroom?
What vendor are you using (IEC?)
Is mounting the TV an additional cost?

Thanks!

Mitch,

I've used Thinstation, but it's easier to use AnywhereTS-config v 2.0 or 2.1.
Downloadable here
http://www.brothersoft.com/anywherets-config-download-107073.html I think.

I would not recommend the newer version 3.x, but the old one works great and is
really easy to use. If you do the cd client, it creates an .iso, you burn it,
and you're off.

Mitch,

That is the 'formula' (except I forgot the first 2, and most important words:
dsmod user) it is just a long string really with the pertinent information from
the other columns put in there (such as username and password). I will attach a
spreadsheet with an expample.

Happy Friday-

Just wanted to pass along this neat little application I ran across
that ties right into Atomic Learning, one of the on-line services provided by
Iowa AEA On-line. Atomic Learning has created a Java application you can
install on your desktop (both Mac and PC) that will allow you to search their
tutorials right from your desktop through the application, and not the web
browser. Once you find one you want to watch, you can also play it through the
application as well. Works pretty well, and will allow an easier link into the
Atomic Learning library.

You can find more information at:

http://movies.atomiclearning.com/k12/atomictoolkit

Have a great weekend!!!

Jeremy

Well that is kind of what we liked about the Promethean since you had to use
the pen to move the cursor, that way you can place your hand on the board and
it won't move when you tap the board.
