KR> Sun-n-Fun

2014-04-06 Thread Sid Wood
Returned from Sun-n-Fun today. Met with Pete Klapp there for lunch one day
and a dinner in town on another day. Shirley and I went to the Thorp T-18
dinner; they had a great Low Country Shrimp Boil.
Also managed to talk with three other KR builders. Met Dick Koehler of EAA
Hints for Homebuilders fame. Dick had also built a KR-2.
Made a nuisance of myself at the Dynon booth. Dynon had some great looking
stuff, but the sales rep politely declined my request to move the displays
to the sunlight coming in the door to see if it really does that.
Wearing KR Gathering shirts is a great conversation starter, even when that
person is not a KR builder. Did not see any KR aircraft on the flight line.
Maybe next year I will have my KR-2 there.

drove by the airport about an hour ago and it is wet! Trees are pulled out and
in the airport site two guys who were back at the motel told of 5 or six planes
got flipped into others as well as tents going down. A Caravan flipped

Spoke to my dad whom drove down there (thank God) was in a food tent and they
did get hit hard. He said around the Zenith exhibit some planes are in a pile
but he did not elaborate. Also on the flight line several are on their backs.
It was not crowded with planes due to the bad weather from the north (many
could not make it). He heard about 3 people were injured. A lot of the
exhibitors were blown down. He said he has had enough and is coming home.
Looks like good weather from here out. God bless to all that were down there
and good luck.

Sounds like you have a UAV Engines, LTD rotary, which is indeed made at the
old Norton factory. When Norton went bust, the company was bought by a few
of the employees and changed direction to the UAV business. I've been there
twice back when we worked on a UAV project. They make the current engine
for the Shadow. We were looking at them as a possible engine supplier, but
went in a different direction. See http://www.uavenginesltd.co.uk/ for more
info on those engines...

Hello Netter's,

We are registered and will have a booth for the KR's near the pond behind
Hangar "D" this year at Sun n Fun. Any and all interested in the KR are
more than welcome to stop by and say hi. We will have a few sets of plans
available for sale for those who have been on the fence wondering about
availablity. Gary Coppen will have his project there for all to see the
first part of the week with one of WW's Corvair engines installed and then,
weather permitting, Joe Horton will have his beautiful KR-2S on display for
you to drool over the second half of the week.

I noticed there are other netters planning to attend and we can use our
booth as a rally point if you wish. I'm in for the BBQ thing as well, just
let me know time and place.

Feel free to contact me direct for more info or ideas. I'm looking forward

Hi all,

I'm mostly a lurker here. I'm currently restoring a '46 Luscombe and
strongly considering a KR as the next project.

I live in Lakeland, about 1.5 miles south of the center line of runway 9/27.
I'd love to meet some of you, and talk about your KR experiences over a beer
or two. There is an excellent place called the Red Door. Great craft beers
on tap and a great place to meet other KR types.

If anyone is interested, I'll be point man on setting up a meeting of the KR
group. Let me know your thoughts.

KR> Sun n Fun 09 - Sell KR?

2009-05-03 Thread william Clapp
Sun n Fun was just as fun and eventful as always though with the added
complexity of being an exhibitor this year.  I did do the smart thing and fly
down to Lakland a couple days early to avoid the Notam and traffic.  It was a
nice smooth and uneventful 1.5 hour trip listening to my MP3 and watching for
traffic.  Beautiful day.   Sunday and Monday were spent setting up the displays
and moving trailers and such.  I did not have much time to see all the stuff
out there but did enjoy meeting friends and many new people.  Joe Horton was
the only other KR there as far as I know.  Thanks for making the trip JOE!  My
plane was in our tent and not on the flight line.   The start of our show was
our IFB (Integral Front Bearing) and our new plane kits slated for delivery
after Oshkosh.  Check out our website for more info.  Glenda, Steve Makish, and
Bob Lester were some other KR people there.  The HOOTERS KR Dinner was a blast
with
many friends and good food.   Thanks to Jack for setting that up.  After an
very busy week I cleaned up N41768 for a 1.3 hour trip home on Monday.  It was
smooth and quick due to a nice tailwind.   I will post info online soon about
the conversion in my plane - a bunch of interesting stuff on it.   I would like
to thank all of those who came to visit and see who we are and our direction.
We (Aeromax) hopes to have products available soon for the KR market.  Some of
those who were at the show got to see the new spars, WAFs, and other components
that will be out soon.  Wing skins and control systems will be available after
Oshkosh.

For those interested, I will posssible by putting N41768 up for sale in a
couple months.  There are some final details I want to do to it but it has been
a plane that has served me well.  I am putting all my efforts into the new
plane I am building and hope to have at Oshkosh.  Im not sure about the price
on it but it will come with a new engine and other goodies.  For those who are
considering a great flying plane send me an email.

I have volunteered to set up the KR dinner at Sun-N-Fun. Here is what I have
arranged so far, nothing is in concrete yet so changes can be made if
necessary. I'm sure many of you will be going to Dave Strouds BBQ on Friday so
I set it up for Thursday evening at 6:30 PM at Hooters on Florida Ave. This
will be very informal gettogether just like last year. Everyone will pay for
their own meal and drinks and tthere is no cover charge for the room. If you

dinner at 6:30. They yelled at me last year about having to remake all the
salads because we were not ready to eat until 7:00 so this year we will
start eating right at 6:30. Menu choice will again be lasagna or NY strip.

That sounds like a good plan (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), so
I'll plan to be there at the same time as you. More info on SNF can be
found at
http://www.sun-n-fun.org/content/interior.asp?section=flyin=convention
. Last year I camped in the woods with Brian Kraut and Dana Overall, so
I'll plan to do that this year too. The hike from campsite to airplane is a
short one, which was nice. From Fly Market to airplane is about 100 feet,
which is even better. I assume we'll all try to park where we did the last
time, which is the first row on the last entrance to the flight line, on the
Fly Market end.

Bad news for you, Joe. The 3100cc "Big Boy" Corvair is up and running!
Finished it up on Saturday, installed it Sunday afternoon, and I'd have
flown it before sunset if the windsock hadn't been sticking straight out and
been trying to unscrew itself from the ground. But I did get about 10 high
speed taxi runs in. There were no giant puddles of oil anywhere, it idled
smoothly, would do 2950 rpm static, and it's full and ready to fly on
Wednesday when I get back from Minnesota. See
http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/phoenix/07022528m.jpg for the
latest incarnation. It looks pretty nice except for the "prototype" air
plenums that I meant to never fly with. Maybe by SNF I'll have some new
ones made up. Hmmm. I wonder if I can get John Backer's wheel pants mounted
by then...

I am planning on being there from the 17-21. Since I don't have a flying KR

you guys so we can all sit around and have a few beers and tell lies.

The Porkopolis Flying Pig made another safe round trip to Sun 'n Fun,
covering the 710 nm southbound trip in 5.2 hours flying time, using 22.2
gallons of fuel, with 2 stops, thanks to a nice tail wind. The return was a
little slower, about 7 hours (not counting the half hour taxi time), burning
over 30 gallons, with 3 fuel stops. Last year (before aero improvements)
the trip down required 4 stops and the return, 5 stops.

I'm IN. Elaine and I are going to make a week of it. Talked with Doug
Steen and the Langford guy the other day. I'll let Mark speak for
himselfbut, it looks like camping next to the trees at the end of the
Warbird Parking, just behind the Antique and Classic building. Great place
to camp, since Doug is not flying his Bonanza it this year.

Here's the deal, unload your camping stuff and enter the main gate. Rent
one of the kiddy carts, load your gear up and head down the road past the
Ultralight area. Go through the "security" on your left just past the
ultralights then make a left across the field (Swift parking) to the tree
line. If you are already on the grounds find the Antique and Classic
building at the end of Warbird, the treeline is directly behind the
building. Brian camped in the woods last year, I usually camp in the grass
just on the treeline.but we can change neighborhoods.

Jeff, pack a tent or give me a shout and I'll bring it down in the truck.

How 'bout a get together Saturday night for the night airshow??

2008-10-12 Thread ifly...@aol.com
Well, if all goes as planned I will be at Sun n Fun for the entire week..
Like last year I will be sponsering the KR and Corvair crowd. I will be
helping out William Wynne and the Corvair gang and ALso be promoting KRs.
According to William there should be around 8 to 12 corvair powered aircraft
there...hopefully three or four KRs...I will fly 41768 there (maybe have
turbo...)
and also possibly Phil Maxons? Zenith 601. It sounds like it will be a
good week. I also plan to have my Airstream there and maybe my Vanagon camper
(if I can arrange drivers) Everything still up in air so to speak. Hope to
do
some flying this year..maybe give a ride or two...we shall see. Hope to
see you there.

172. We drove the campers out and showed up Tue morning and preped and got
ready for a busy day. Look at FLYCORVAIR.com for pics. We took a 601
firewall forward package, the 601 and lots of parts. I spent most of my time
those
days on the flight line showing the KR - the TURBO Skycouple and answering a
multitude of questions. On Friday I left before the airshow and flew home to
Valdosta GA to pick up Elaine (8 year old daughter) and flew back by 630 pm
after the show had finished. She really enjoyed the weekend there. There
were activities for kids. She learned about meterology, made clouds, made
tornadoes, learned how to make wooden ribs (she collected 11 from other kids
to
start her own triplane). It was a good learning experience for her. One
Saturday I recieved a notice to appear at the award ceremony and N41768
received Best All Wood Aircraft! It was icing on the cake. On Sunday I was
approached by the Air Force ground crew asking that I fly some oil samples to
the
coast for analysis and I said sure - they were paying the fuel - so Elaine and
I ran them to Titusville and got back at dark. Monday, the final day of the
show, Elaine and I got up and saw Glacier Girl - P38 - takeoff and head
home. The topper was watching a formation of four aircraft - a P51 in lead, a
Saber jet, a F-4 Phantom, and a F16 perform low passes over the crowd. WOW!
It was a great weekend.
I flew the Kr home on Monday and got Elaine dropped off for school and
then headed back to Williams in Edgewater FL. Today I got a ride back to
Lakeland in the 172 and was able to ferry the Skycoupe back. I much prefer
the
180mph Kr to the 100 mph Skycoupe. Back at Williams I worked on my KR a bit
and a few other projects. Updates on N41768 will be coming later. I left
Williams at 5:55 this afternoon and landed at 7:02 pm in Valdosta. The math
on that..YEHAW!

It has been one fine week..

N41768 152 hours and loving it!
Bill

KR> Sun-n-fun KR dinner

2008-10-12 Thread Brian Kraut
Well boys and girls, the deposit for the KR dinner at SNF is paid and it
will be on Friday, April 15. We have the room from 6:30 until 11 P.M. It
will be at the Holiday Inn at 3405 South Florida Ave, same as the past few
years. I will post directions when we get a little closer.

One thing I want to be sure of this year is that anyone that wants to come
to the dinner will be able to. I know that there were a few people last
year that flew in and did not go to the dinner. Fear not, I will be sure to
have several volunteers with cars that can give people rides to the dinner
and back. Anyone that is driving that wants to volunteer early can contact
me offline.

I would like to get a preliminary head count. Anyone that is planning to be
there send me an email a br...@engalt.com, not to the entire KR Net please.
Let me know if you will probably need a ride and if you will have any
guests. Let me know if you are planning on flying a KR in also if you are.
I am not going to hold anyone to these preliminary plans. If you are not
sure just give me your probability of being there so I have a preliminary
guess at the head count.

Menu selections will be:

Lasagna
Spaghetti and Meatballs
Chicken or Veal Parmigana
Chicken Scarpariello
Catch of the Day with Grenoblese
Roast Beef in Au Jus
New York Strip

I don't have a clear answer from them yet, but I am assuming that I will
need to narrow down to two menu selections a week or so before the dinner
like we had last year. For now, email me your preferred choice so I can
pick the two most popular if they make me commit to just two selections.
Cost will be around $16 to $20 per person depending on the menu selection
and the number of people coming.

For those new people that have not been to the dinner before, don't be shy.
We don't bite and you are all welcome. No one is going to ask for a receipt
for your plans at the door. If you are just thinking of building a KR or
just are interested in them come and talk to the people that are building
and flying them. You will be required to be able to spell KR and there will
be a test before you get desert.

I will post details here in a few weeks on how to reach me, what the ride
arrangements are, and where the sign up sheet will be at SNF. If you will
not be on the KRNet or want me to contact you directly with more firm
information when it becomes available email me at br...@engalt.com.

KR> Sun N Fun and update

2008-10-12 Thread ifly...@aol.com
Sun and Fun is just around the corner - How many KRs will there be and who
will stay for maore than a couple hours? I hope to see a few of you there
this year. This will be my first year there in N41768 and sure hope its not
the
last. I have just clocked over 138 hours on her and still having fun.
Saddly I havent flown in over two weeks... maybe this next weekend. Im doing
a
couple cowling mods and some repair and paint work to my wheel pants. I hope
to have strobe installations finished - left wing is done but still need
parts for the right wingtip.
For the guys checking out finished money invested in there planes, I had
7258.00 total at the time of the Gathering 04. Since then I have invested a
couple hundred bucks more and still have more plans down the road but it
wasnt too hard to have a nice flying plane for a relatively low price and low
time investment (about 600 hours). I may decide to begine building another
KR2S in a couple years with a few mods that Ive been thinking about. However,
N41768 has been fun and a good experience. Ive flown in all sorts of weather
from 100 degrees to 40 below, snow, rain, (no sleat or ice), turbulence, and
beautiful blue skies, and it have remained steady and very secure. This
plane does much better in turbulence than my other standard KR2. I used to
have
to slow down my other one to 120 mph or I would bounce all over but this
plane does well at a manuevering speed of 150. I hope to get my top speed
over
the 180 mark with a couple mods but Im comfortably flying 65% power(give or
take) at 150 mph buring about 4.5 gph. Not bad! Full throttle can get me
180
but I also burn about 6 or so GPH. Ive got some prop changes to make and
test out to see if I can get better performance but that requires time and
money I dont have at this point.

Keep building guys (and gals) and get in the air soon - there is a lot of
room up there for you!

Bill Clapp

Gang, in the last 10 years of attending SNF, which included a couple years
in the ground advisory tower, the most KRs I have seen there was three in
any one year. A couple years I've never seen one. I'm just saying that so
new members, and new visitors to SNF, don't get their hopes up too high and
then be disappointed. Your best shot is the gathering. Course this year
may be differentI'm think next year should be way different.

With that said, last year I had a beer and brats get together at my
campsite. We had probably 40 people stop in for some fun and suds, then did
Margarettaville (new to SNF last year) then took in the night airshow. If
you haven't seen SNF's night airshow you are missing a great time. I expect
this years beer and brats to be much larger. I'll keep you guys informed as
to the date. Maybe I can talk Steve Bennett into letting me drop some flyers
off at his booth, since Rand Robinson no longer does a booth at SNF. I am a
CPA so I can't leave this until April 15th., but plan on staying until they
kick me out.

Anyway, in the past I have called and got group KR rates at a local motel.
No need to anymore as camping is the way to go. We usually agree on a
time/place and meet up for an evening of hanging out, much more informal
than the KR dinner (I went one time:-)plus it stays on the grounds and
lasts until the suds runs out.

Hum.beer and brats at SNF and keg and Hooters wings at my shop
on Feb. 28th..I'm starting to see a pattern here:-)
