Fw: [lace-chat]Knitting
When i typed this yesterday I meant to ask a question. After being a knitter on and off for almost 60 years I am now finding the wool is throwing off tiny fibres which are making me cough badly so I have had to resort to wearing a cotton headscarf round my nose and mouth to keep it out (what an image for a sunday morning, LOL) Has any other lacemaker/knitter out there found similar problems? This doesn't seem to be a problem with my lace when I am using natural cottons and silk threads only. At the moment its ok as the weather is currently cold enough for me to enjoy the benefits of being covered more and warmer but I am hoping we have some better in the coming weeks. One more reason to get this finished and back to my lacemaking I think, LOL. I am now beginning to really miss it and need to get back into some. As its less than a month this must be an addiction, :-) Sue T Dorset UK I also have been away from Lace making for some weeks now, after finishing making some coasters I got stuck into knitting a cardigan I promised my Mum who has just come out of hospital after almost 4 months. Hi Sue years ago when my Mum was knitting mohair she had this problem. A solution she used was to put the yarn in the freezer for an hour before she knitted with it kept the 'fluff' stuck to the ball instead of the air! Re: [lace-chat] Cutwork Collar
I have to say I feel she has encouraged some designers to bring out clothes which are much more feminine than for some time. I also have been away from Lace making for some weeks now, after finishing making some coasters I got stuck into knitting a cardigan I promised my Mum who has just come out of hospital after almost 4 months. I am almost half way through it but had the urge to make some lace patterns so i can prepare some lace to take away with me on my travel pillow next month. I came to it fresh and got several simple ones printed out and one ready to prick and work. i have also taken a fancy to getting prepared to make a butterfly, so printed off the pattern I chose which is the Louise Colgan Milanese one. I have had the book approx 5 years after working the hummingbird project off the dvd and not done anything from it, so I must be in a creative mood. I have even realised I have the right size thread in one of my boxes so its meant to be. now I just need to make a good job of it, :-) Sue T Dorset UK Hi Everybody: The cover of Hello Canada this week has a nice picture of the Duchess of Cambridge out shopping, wearing a lovely cutwork collar. It's enough to make me go down to the storage locker to dig out my embroidery books! Some of you know I've been trying to sell my apartment since last fall, so all of my lacemaking stuff has been packed away. Now I have sold it, so I can make a mess again! Any update on how the ferret lace is doing? it is a very pretty piece of lace. I put my pillow onto a table top once without checking it was far enough on and it toppled to the floor. I didn't know about the turn upside down trick then so spent about 2 hours gently untangling them. One thread broken which was the first time I learned to add a new thread. My cat however, (no longer in this world) used to lay on the arm of my chair and watch me make lace and sometimes just lay his paw over the top of the bobbins as if to hold them for me. Re: [lace] Nothing on the pillow!
Sadly Clay I am in the same position. I had one new pattern pricked ready to begin but feel its not quite right so am going to redraw it (asap) and as I dont know how many bobbins I will need I cant even prepare those. I was doing some knitting for me while travelling around to visit my Mother in hospital recently and although seriously ill (and my sisters didn't expect her to get to her birthday on Monday just gone) she seems to be fighting on, :-) While there she asked me to make her a cardigan like the one I was wearing so as I have promised I feel I need to get on with that but need to get this one off my needles first before my brain forgets what its doing. Working on asap so I can begin on hers.So I am trying to keep my mind focused on the knitting but will be happy to return to my pillow as soon as I can. Luckily the lace project can wait, if it must, and I have got on top of all the other lace projects I promised myself I would do apart from that one so far so must drive myself on with the knitting. I might have to pause and work a couple of small things for my own sanity Noelene but as Mum is now 89 and quite poorly I have to achieve that for her first. I am enjoying reading your mail as always. Sue T, Dorset UK, where at last we have a sunny but very chilly day, no snow here. Many people struggling in various areas due to some very freak weather, Huge snow drifts in the north and farmers loosing sheep and lambs underneath it all which is terrible. I can't believe this! I do not have a lace project in progress! I don't know what to do with myself! I just finished a piece of Milanese, designed by Louise Colgan. I'll post this to Flickr when I can photograph it. I have a workshop with Vera Cockuyt coming up soon, where I'm going to start a Vologda piece, and another workshop in May (Tonder), so it doesn't make a lot of sense to start something and then get caught up in two other projects. Re: [lace] Types of lace
I decided not to join in the bookmark exchange this year as I was very busy completing some lace I promised my sister over a year ago, now done and ready to post:-) Also I wanted to knit this one cardigan/jacket in peach which is about 2 thirds done now. Have made Torchon, Bucks, Beds, 1 piece of Russian lace but want to do more and 2 pieces of Milanese and again want to make more and two small samples of Flanders but have never seemed to have time to carry on learning that one. I have knitted since I was little and a friend and I learned to crochet in the 70s. I did a number of lacy shawls in the 70s cardigans and I once worked a very pretty lace babies dress in the very early 80's (just because I wanted to do it) which won a 2nd place in a local craft show before handing it over to my sister in law for her new baby daughter. I would like to learn to do tambour lace as I now have the right things to try it, I would like to try needle lace and I want to learn shuttle tatting to a point of competency to make little motifs, also improving on my needle tatting skills without having to struggle with every move but need more time to spend just trying and working at it which seems to escape me at the moment. Sue T Dorset UK At present I am making my bookmarks ready for the exchange but I am also making the 'map of the world' from the Eeva-Liisa Kortelahti book 'let's make bobbin lace'. I'm making it in black and intend to mount it on a piece of fabric which I will paint in a wash of blue with hints of browns/greens behind the land masses. It will hang alongside the two world maps I have already (one in blackwork embroidery and the other cross stitch). As for other laces I make or have tried; Torchon, Honiton, Bedfordshire (not keen), Bucks (I like), Russian tape lace (really enjoyed), a little Withof (must try more), Bruges flower Lace, Hairpin lace, Needlelace, Milanese, Miniature laces for my dolls houses and have dabbled with a little designing. I like to knit and crochet and am very pleased that I have at last mastered Tatting with the help of You-Tube and so at the moment spend a fair bit of time practising my tatting techniques especially trying to get uniform sized picots :-) Hoping for warmer signs of Spring soon Celia in SE London where it is cold and grey outside. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Jean-Marie Leclair
This lady was born in about 1816 and married in the late 1830s I think. Her sister was also a lacemaker at that time and I am trying to remember if a couple of their daughters were lacemakers. They lived not too far away from honiton but of course because of Carol Mcfadgeons (sp) work and books we now know there was Devon Trolley lace as well as Hontion lace in that area. No idea what type they did would would love to know. When we went to the area looking for their information with just their names and date of birth we were new to the search but when i found the information I was over the moon to see lacemaker. This was 5 years after I began making lace and a real connection which this unknown lady who was a relative of my lace mother in law. I later bought the first two of Carols books but have yet to try working of the lace which i have promised myself I will. Sue T Dorset UK Dear all, Fascinating topic. I speak with no authority other than Alex Stillwell told me that a woman who was a lacemaker was in high demand as a wife because she could bring in extra money. We must remember that for the lower classes it was a hand to mouth existence, and so doing anything that brought money/food/shelter to the family could be the difference between success and the workhouse. Lace didn't pay well, but it paid, although probably agricultural work paid better for the time spent, so you don't list everything you do to make a living, but it doesn't mean you don't do it. 9 to 5 jobs didn't exist. Lace will wait, can be done in odd moments or bad weather, and the equipment doesn't take up a lot of space in a small cottage, nor is it a large investment in equipment. Men probably could find better paying work than lace in off times, but not necessarily, so it could be a good alternative. For women/mothers, they were more limited because they had to be at home with small children. Although I don't do a lot of needle lace I made a container for mine with a box that Badminton shuttlecocks come in from the sports shop. I cut it so it was 9 long, Padded it slightly and covered it with cotton cover, you need only tuck the ends inside as the cases come with metal ends that snap in so you can pop all the lace, threads etc into either end and snap shut then all is kept clean and tidy. I have two friends who get the heeby-jeebies at the sight of just a picture of a spider, another friend who is frightened of spiders, and would have to keep that logo under wraps when they are around. Hi Peg Now I could say 'a horse's shoe' but you'd probably throw something over to the uk!! LOL Basically it's a round cover cloth which is about 3/4 of a full circle. [lace] - Lurkers vs. Volunteers
When I have been struggling with something in lace the people on arachne have been wonderful, mostly. But not all of the answers come through the main group, occasional answers, or snippets of information have come through directly to me. Some from very prominent members of Arachne and other times from very quiet people who probably dont teach but have that vital piece of helpful advice which has been really appreciated. I think many others have been helped in a similar way and on occasion have been able to do our bit in helping someone else. Myself and another arachnid guided and helped find ways to describe how to work a certain pattern to a new lady attempting to make lace with no access to a teacher and working from books. To our amazement it worked and she continued to work for a couple of years until patchwork took her away from lace for now. So not all would be lurkers are actually taking only, many are giving where they can but very quietly in the background. Not everyone in life is able to pass on their knowledge or even continue with this wonderful craft all the time but reading the mail from the group is enjoyable mostly anyway. So to all the arachnids where ever you are I am proud to be of their number. Sue T Dorset UK where it is raining heavily and I am off to complete cooking dinner When there are probably less than 50 regular contributors to Arachne, and we know that there are another 1,000 or so who are lurking, does that matter to you? Re: [lace] Straw Plaiters
I was born and brought up in Luton during the 50s and hat making was a fairly big industry at that time. My Mum did some piece work in some of my childhood years. We took my mum for a trip around the museum a couple of years ago, firstly on the ground floor to see the lace and then upstairs to see the straw hats and other interesting things. My brother in law was a big time Luton Town Football (The Hatters) supporter when he got married in the early 70's and was given a straw boater as a gift from the club. Sue T now in Dorset UK I think they made hats. At the Luton Museum, which I visited for lace purposes, there was an awful lot about straw plaiting and the hat industry. I just got very sneeky The young bride to be was telling me how close her wedding was so I was able to ask a few questions and so I know know she has an ivory dress, so now my question is, What threads come in the best ivory. I can change the sizes up or down to get the right grid for the thread once I work out what might be best. When giving something to a friend not relative like a horseshoe, handkerchief or other small item to a bride without knowing the colour of her gown etc are there any ideas people could tell of how they achieved that without it looking out of place? Sue T Dorset UK, dry and brightish after a wild windy night I too wanted to make lace for my youngest daughter's future wedding but neither she nor I had any idea what kind of dress she would want and so I began yardage for a wedding veil when she was still in high school. I chose a torchon pattern about 2 wide and used Metler 60/2 cotton thread. Over the next 5 years I made 8 yards. I used all but 13 when I made the veil. I also made her garter and lace for a hanky. Finally I made a square mat that was open in the center for the bridal pillow and after the wedding I took the mat off the pillow and put a picture of the bride and groom in the center, framed it and gave to the bride and groom. Fw: [lace] What thread and/or pattern would you use?
I think advance work could be done on design and samples of lace in the early days, small items and threads and then you would be prepared to follow Maureens idea after a date has been arranged. To work your own design is also a lovely touch. Certainly makes the lace extra special. Sue T Good morning I also agree with Jane.My daughters both chose ivory for their wedding dresses but I would have thought that one of them would have chosen white as she is dark haired and has quite an olive coloured skin. It all depends on the dress that they see and like at the time, and of course, can afford. I made both of them a garter but after they announced they were getting married. The eldest daughter gave us five weeks notice of the wedding and the garter was made up using 80 fil a dentelles in white with a blue pair down the edge My younger daughter gave us over a year's notice of her intention to marry.Again the pattern was torchon of my own design, but I worked this in silk this time, can't remember the actual thickness of the thread but it would have been the equivalent of 30 retors (now 30 madeira cotona) and took longer. It is an off white colour with a blue pair on the edge of the fan. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] demo followup
Ok... I'm joining in now Before I started school, like Ilske, I saw lace being made by my aunt. She promised she'd teach me when I started school, unfortunately she passed away before I got there. I'd been fascinated by the beads at the bottom of the bobbins One of the saddest things for me is that I don't have any of her lace not counting the crochet edged table cloth she made for my Mum and I still have!! It was over 50 years later that I found a teacher and started making lace! In 1981 on a travel to Canada I saw it again and got interest in it. Re: [lace] Finished, almost
That sounds really lovely Alice and looking forward to seeing pictures. That is one very large piece of lace. I have got beyond wanting to use my pillow as a frisbee, :-) having worked the half stitch bits which were causing all the problems (not because I cant do it, but because it is hard to handle so many lots coming from different areas, meeting a pin and parting but being in the right place) now I am working the lace makers skirt. Now it looks like something and I am really enjoying the process at last. First half done, second half coming up. Later on I might need to ask about the best way to tie off all the pairs coming out of the picture and into the bottom of the frame before being thrown out. I think I have a diagram of how to do the particular tying off and longer tail behind the frame. In my head I can see it, so now I need to find the diagram and work on replicating that, but not quite yet. Maybe 10 - 14 days time for the second half which seems to be moving on much quicker. Sue T Yah! Hooray!! Yippee! Done...done...done.Well, Almost. I just finished tying off my centerpiece edging... 24 circle, six inches wide. I had to cheer about it! I think it's been about four years in the making. Of course, it's still sitting in the pins, and then has all those thread ends to weave in, but I consider it a great milestone when the bobbins are all cut off. It's a Kortelahti pattern with bell flowers in it, done in linen with the flowers in pale lilac. When it finally gets it's picture taken, I'll let you know where to see it. That makes two projects completed within a month. There's no other big one almost done so it won't happen again soon. Now I need to find another large-ish, not too difficult, pattern to get started for my demo's this year. I've used this centerpiece for the past about four years and will miss having something ready-to-hand. Most of my works-in-progress are a bit complex to do while talking to visitors. Re: [lace] Re: Breaking and Twist to Thread
Over the years we have been discussing, on and off, the fact that some bobbins seem to twist / untwist more than others. At present I am working a wide torchon edging in cashmere/silk mix, with the same thread and Swedish bobbins throughout. ON the left I have a half stitch fan for the headside, and on the right of the pattern is a variety of cloth stitch pairs and some ct pin ct areas. The bobbins in the half stitch area are losing their twist, and those on the right side with mostly ct pin ct are steadily gaining twist. Those in the middle (which probably travel in and out of the other areas) are more stable. I have never seen such pronounced differences as working in this lace-weight yarn. Re: [lace] Re: Breaking and Twist to Thread
I am not particularly bothered by this, and know to twist or untwist the yarn on the bobbins as needed to stop the yarn splitting or becoming too fine. Yes, I know that it is working in thicker thread that makes it easier to observe. I was simply observing the phenomenon when a half stich area is introduced into the pattern and the way the thread then behaves. At some point, I might sample the effect of having the half stitch area on the right side to see if it still untwists. What I failed to tell you all, was that in the earlier strip I worked for this piece, using exactly the same thread and bobbins, but where there was not a half stitch fan, and the pattern was uniform across its width all the bobbins gradually tightened. It is only since introducing the half stitch area that the threads in that area are untwisting. Theo was incorrect in assuming that I wind the bobbins by wrapping the thread around them. This is not something I have done in years. Also I don't roll bobbins on the pillow. It was given a flannel cover by its previous owner, and they pretty much stay where I place them. I do not place my hand on them and roll them across the pillow. Sue sueba...@comcast.net - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Usually I have masses of patience but this afternoon I have been close to using my pillow for a frisbee (except that its a rectangle rather than round. Trying to get the half stitch bonnet worked on this pattern is definately enough to try the patience of a saint. Just too many directions at once. I have been working at it for days now. I thought I would complete that section ages ago this afternoon but I have gone backwards as many times as forwards, so still several pins to do but I definately need a break. [lace] Christmas exchange and lace
Thanks to Clay and Sue Babbs coming to my rescue there are now three more photos on my Hurwitzend folder. Clay and I were discussing her tree and lace decorations and I explained that our tiny tree was now too small to hold all my pieces, some from exchanges but also lots of other little pieces done by myself or gifts from friends. Some are momentoes of lost family and friends including our two pet cats so I made a red curtain strip to hang from one of my internal doors and pin them on there each December. It is lovely to take them out of the tissue paper and pin them on. We also bought two glass angel bells which my husband decided needed lace skirts, so they still hang on the tree and the top angel had a lace gown made up using a strip of Christine Springett lace using gold beads in strategic places. Clay asked to see pictures so I took a couple of new ones showing the curtain with lace, the tree angel on her own and also the tree with all 3 angels on along with the little robins and lots of glass baubles although there is already a photo of the glass angel bell on her own in the folder. So with Sue Babbs help they are now in the right folder, something I couldnât manage to achieve. Re: [lace] Jean Horne nativity help
Jean Horne was on this list for awhile and lives in South Africa. She may still be on the list, but I haven't seen her post for a long time. Is this the pricking that you are talking about? I was sent it by Jean a few years ago. If so , it looks as if the area below the Holy family is worked in cloth stitch in one direction. Before working the next row from right to left, the passives are worked in pairs in cloth stitch and twist (ctct), then you work the row in cloth stitch (CTC) and so on. You will find this happening in various Milanese braids. She used to sell booklets of lace patterns worked in colour at one point, but I haven't seen them for a while, and there may well be more booklets out now. - Sue sueba...@comcast.net -Original Message- From: Vickie Green Sent: Saturday, December 08, 2012 12:30 PM To: lace@arachne.com Subject: [lace] Jean Horne nativity help Hello there gentle spiders, I have a question for you: I have a copy of a little Bucks Point Nativity pattern (about 3inches long in a lozenge shape) by Jean Horne. Fw: [lace] Please identify photos on Flickr
I have just realised that our photos are still available on webshots http://community.webshots.com/user/arachne2003/albums/most-recent This will help remind us all which photos we put up there, when we want to work out which to transfer to our own sets! And also what we said about the photos at the time we submitted them. You can tell my memory isn't' what it used to be, can't you!! I have had some questions about how to delete a photo from the unidentified set once you have put them in your own set. Here is a way I have found to do delete (there may be a better one but I haven't yet found it!): 1 Go to the 'organize and create' tab and select ' sets and collections' 2 Double click on 'Unidentified Photos' to open that set. 3 Then drag your photo(s) towards the bottom of the screen where a magical dumping ground will appear! 4 Hit save near the bottom left once you have dragged them all into the magical dumping ground Sue sueba...@comcast.net Sue sueba...@comcast.net -Original Message- From: Sue Babbs Sent: Tuesday, November 06, 2012 10:07 AM To: lace@arachne.com Subject: [lace] Please identify photos on Flickr The Good News: I have now transferred the remaining photos from Smile to Flickr. There are no more Arachne photos on Smile. Hurrah!! Smile was a horrendous way of storing the photos. The Bad News: If you have not already done so, you still have to go to Flickr and label your photos. All photos lost their folders, identifications and tags when they were transferred from Webshots to Smile. In the process of moving the photos, I spotted photos of Devon Thein, and the work of Susan Lambiris, David Collyer, Janice Blair (Aztec, cake rocking horse, are yours I think). There is some needlelace, which may be more of Liz Ligeti's work. There may be a few Christmas card photos which should be transferred to that set, Clay. There are some which are so out of focus, when you see them at a larger size than thumbnail, it may be better to delete them and replace them with better photos if possible. [lace-chat] How to separate an egg yolk from the white--Chinese style
Fascinating! I bet I can break the yolk though!! The language in the video at the link below is Chinese. Ignore the language and just watch the demonstration. Watch the simple and effective method of separating an egg yolk from the white. It is a simple and straight forward application of hydraulics. Re: [lace] Flickr photos
I am finding that the delete icon at the top bar is not always present (and never on my laptop!) Mostly sometime after all the photos have been loaded the delete icon appears. I am in the process of helping Clay by moving all the unidentified photos from Smile to Flickr, where they will be in a set by themselves. I will let you all know when that task is complete, and explain what the original photo owners will now need to do. It will be easier with them all in Flickr for you all to go in and label them, but it would be easier for me if you didn't do it until I had them all transferred. Liz, This may mean that yours are in two sets. I'll try to spot them and remove them when I've got everything moved.
