Michele,

Have you looked at these records, as it would seem that you have a reference to
a repository which is no longer in your records?

Good Evening from snowy and cold Illinois- please be very careful with flash

many a customer lose their flash drives or break them or not remove them after

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources not printing on To-Do Lists

2009-01-10 Thread Jennifer Trahan
Well, that's a good question. I recently started doing it as part of my ongoing
organization plan. Once I consult a source for a task on an individual's to-do
list, I then attach that source to that to-do item. I keep a printed to-do list
in the individual's file folder. If I see that a source is referenced on the
to-do report, I can easily see that it is closed. (Of course, I can also glance
at the status line to see if the task has been closed). Overall, the main
reason I attach sources to to-do tasks is that I like to know what source I
consulted to accomplish that particular to-do task. I don't usually attach a
source until I actually complete the task b/c sometimes it's hard to know
enough about the source beforehand (i.e. the exact marriage license number or
year). Of course, if it is a database, you probably could at least put the name
of the database and it's URL as the source. But on the other hand, I would
probably just put that info in the
task description. Then I would put the exact source after I was finished with
the task. I was just frustrated b/c I think the sources were printing perfectly
fine before these most recent upgrades. I was so busy around the holidays that
I haven't really used Legacy much in the last month or so since the updates
came out. When I came back to it today, I had two things not functioning that
were previously functioning when 7.0 first came out. I reported both of them to
Legacy support.

I'm not using the To Do Lists right, I guess. One of my To Dos, for example, is
to search a specific online cemetery database for a fellow and his descendants.
I know he's buried there as are most of his siblings and 20 or more of his
cousins. It's just too many lines to search all at once, so I reminded myself
to do it later. I do have that source in my database, but have not attached it
to the To Do.

Why do you have sources attached to a To Do List? And by the way, your
frustration is coming through loud and clear and if I did what I think I
understand you're doing, I would be frustrated too!

Belinda,
I'm having a similar problem with getting my complete Child Status list.
In the Master List Event Definitions, select Options, then Import. You can
try importing the default list or Import from Sample file. Please read
about this first as I believe it adds to your list those events not there
and doesn't write over (like that would be helpful), but please read first.

Thanks Jenny and John for your replies.

Now here is where it gets interesting. I'd actually looked to see if it was
provided as one of the events/facts before I had posted to the LUG but it
isn't there... and I've checked again after receiving your messages.

How do I get it back...and any others that might have gone with it without
loosing the new ones that I have added to the list?

Suggestions with this would be also be greatly appreciated.

[LegacyUG] Ver 6 Deluxe Check/Repair error 3265 Child Status error for many many entries

2009-01-10 Thread JCTripp
Legacy 6 deluxe produces a 3265 error each time I run Check/Repair. This
hang up is in step 103 or 104 of the 143 steps in the Check/Repair.
The maintenance log reveals
"1910 Child Status Records referred to that do not exist"
We have added a new Child Status '!Fix this Child Status - 1' and the
following records now point to this new temporary status. From the Master
Child Status list you can edit this record and change it to the correct
value.

There are no records listed following this statemant.
I added another child to check, and sure enough, I'm up to 1911 Child
Status Records referred to that do not exist.

For error 3265 I did delete the .DMB files, downloaded and installed ver 6
again (did not uninstall 6 as it was indicated installing again would just
fill in those missing files), and rebooted my computer from a cold start
before looking at Legacy again.
I believe this child status error is coming from the fact that I don't have
a "BLANK LINE" child status.
Under options in this Master list, I tried importing defaults
(successfully), importing the child status list from the sample file
(successfully), but cannot get that first line of the list to show a blank
record.
I looked at the Child-Parent Relationship list and that list does have the
first line blank. If I try to edit that line, I get a message that it is a
blank record used by Legacy.
I'm guessing Legacy uses this Blank Record Line with every child entry. The
fact that mine is now missing and every child I entered since -well, a long
time ago is missing this Child Status of blank status and triggering an
error in my Check/Repair log.
Any suggestions as to the 'correct value' referred to in my maintenance log
referred to above?
Any suggestions as to importing a valid Child Status List that has that
blank record line? (I did try saving a 'blank' but that was not allowed.)
Obviously, my last Check/Repair was run 1911 child entries ago.

RE: [LegacyUG] Flash Drive

2009-01-10 Thread Red Sanders

Many of us typically evaluate messages in a forum as to how they pertain
specifically to ourselves. And we may decide that a message or thread has
little or no value. However, given the number of folks that subscribe to this
group, chances are that some/many folks will see something that relates to
them, and provides new insight. This is true whether it be a flash drive, a
feature of Legacy, or a technique being used. My personal example is that I
am very familiar with flash drives, and have used them for as long as they have
been available, even distributing many to technology-savy folks in my school
district. However, I know that given the richness of experience of this
groups, chances are that I'll still pick up something that I didn't think of.
So, I read every message - as I do with others that at don't appear at first to
have a value to me.

In summary, the messages I best enjoy are those that provide uses, or alternate
methods.

Re: [LegacyUG] Error 91 Ta Dah!

2009-01-10 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
JL - I never said "you" don't need a flash drive. But I can't imagine
wanting (let alone needing) to take my genealogy files with me every time I
leave the house. My life is obviously quite different than yours as I often
leave my house to go for a walk or to go to the grocery store or post
office. I was reacting to Robin telling me I "needed" (sorry, Robin) a flash
drive, which I don't.

Go to the tool bar>Options>Customize>Sources>Right hand side, towards the

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources not printing on To-Do Lists

2009-01-10 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
I'm not using the To Do Lists right, I guess. One of my To Dos, for example,
is to search a specific online cemetery database for a fellow and his
descendants. I know he's buried there as are most of his siblings and 20 or
more of his cousins. It's just too many lines to search all at once, so I
reminded myself to do it later. I do have that source in my database, but
have not attached it to the To Do.

Why do you have sources attached to a To Do List? And by the way, your
frustration is coming through loud and clear and if I did what I think I
understand you're doing, I would be frustrated too!

Re: [LegacyUG] Flash Drive

2009-01-10 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
Mary, none of my family has ever lived where I live (my children left here
more than 20 years ago). No one related to me will ever be in my local
newspaper, other than my husband. I have inter-library loaned micro-filmed
newspapers, but that was many years ago. We have a very small family history
center that is open on an on call basis. I used it very extensively for many
years - was able to accurately state that I used it more hours than any
local LDS member for about 5 years. But I don't use it any more because so
much is now on the internet. It is possible that I'll want to use it
sometime in the distant future. Technology may have advanced by that time so
that I'll probably be able to e-mail myself any images.

It is good to remember that technology does advance and change. I had a Zip
drive (could hold 100mb) many years ago before you could save to a CD
(670mb) and it was the only way you could save large files (floppies were
1.44mb). Of course, that has gone the way of buggy whips. I suspect the same
will happen to flash drives.

Re: [LegacyUG] UPGRADE after DELUXE 7 differences?

2009-01-10 Thread Gary Templeman
It is not uncommon to find significant changes between major versions such
as 6 to 7. But I still wonder why is it being considered a problem. All
programs have a learning curve anyway. If an update makes a small change,
either to fix a bug, add a feature and so on, that just means a bit of
adaptation on the user's part. While I agree that not all changes turn out
to be good, I think we can both also agree that if there were never ANY
changes, the program could not improve.

Yep! The screens are different. I found the same problem when upgrading

What screens, how different. Updates may make some subtle changes
compared to the originally installed version, and artwork on boxes or
disks does not always reflect the actual program. Things can also look
different depending on monitor shape, resolution and the Windows themes
one is using. Unless you are having a problem I wouldn't worry about it.

Kia ora Elizabeth, I assure you that I myself don't wear a flash drive,
attractive as they may be! Nor do I wear a mobile, and the only
Blackberries I am acquainted with are edible. True, there can be
problems with flash drives: fortunately I have yet to experience them -
as there used to be with floppies, and still are with hard drives sometimes.
CD-ROMS too have been known to fail! The best policy is "belt and
braces" or as Americans might say "belt and suspenders". Computers are
an inanimate example of the fragility of "life"
I live at the very end of a gravel road. We occasionally have people
drive down (usually at midnight) who don't seem to understand "No
Through Road" and then they have difficulty turning. If you have Google
Earth type in "Rawene". Not very far from Cape Reinga where in Maori
legend the spirits of the dead enter the ocean to make their way back to
Hawa'i'iki. You might think it a good place to study genealogy!

Best wishes

Have you checked since the last update was issued? By far the majority of
problems have been resolved. I did notice that if a footnote was right at
the bottom of the page then it could be lost, but as I cannot replicate it
now I assumed this had been resolved. I was using the Descendant Report.

You can also access gmail from email clients like Eudora, Outlook, Outlook
Express, etc... You have to set gmail up for pop or imap access to do this.
I rarely check my gmail with a browser. No ads. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Error 91 Ta Dah!

2009-01-10 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
Sorry, Robin, I did not know that people would actually WEAR computer
equipment, and you did add to my knowledge in that department. Made me shake
my head wondering what this world is coming to, and so I did find some humor
in your post. I cannot see how a flash drive makes using a computer
"easier", though, and there have posts here regarding problems with them,
which only confirms my suspicions. (I live in a town of 10,000, 700 air
miles from anywhere over 50,000 population, and driving 20 miles in either
direction from my house puts you smack dab in front of an "end of the road"
sign, so remote is the way I describe my location.)

My post regarding the subject - Error 91 - had to do with the fact that I
get this error and do not use a flash drive. The back up location has
nothing to do with this error. However, somewhere in the thread of this
problem, someone identified that unticking backing up the multimedia files
seemed to be at the core of the problem. Since I don't have multimedia files
attached to Legacy, I don't attempt to back them up and that might be the
common thread here. I unticked that step because it seemed to me that asking
the computer to look for non-existent files/folders was only asking for
trouble. Maybe not.

I hope Millenia takes note.

I'd like to add, if you are going to flash memory for backup, use something
in addition too. I backup to a hard drive on my network and also use online
storage. Flash memory one limitation is it's life span, it has limited
erase-write cycles. They can sometimes die quickly.

You may have seen them without knowing: they are maybe 2 cm wide and 5 cm

[LegacyUG] Source options on chronology report

2009-01-10 Thread Jennifer Trahan
Can someone from Legacy please tell me why they keep taking away options every
time an update is completed? First, we heard about not being able to combine
basic sources into sourcewriter sources (or something to that affect). Now it
appears that on the sources tab on the options for the chronology report, they
have taken away just about every option there was except to whether or not to
print sources and whether or not to print pictures with sources. There used to
be an option to print sources on a separate page or right after the text ended
in the chronology report. I HATE wasting paper by printing sources on a brand
new sheet. That's what is happening without the option to choose. PLEASE BRING
THIS OPTION BACK. I'm scared that this has happened to other reports as well. I
haven't checked yet. My family group sheets seem to be okay. I know I am not
crazy b/c I checked the help menu, and sure enough, it mentions this option on
the sources tab of where
to start printing sources for the chronology report. Was removing this an
accident? Why would you remove this? It seems like every time Legacy takes two
steps forward with version 7, it takes one step back. I am going crazy. I guess
I'll just waste paper for now. By the way, can someone check this for me and
make sure it's not just a problem with my file?

Jennifer (one peeved customer, but I still love you Legacy)

And let me add that my husband think you don't NEED a computer. Not everyone

[LegacyUG] Flash drive (humor)

About flash drives: Yes, very useful, tough little gizmos. (And cheap,
in $15 range.) Even a small one carries my entire genealogy files with
room to spare, and plugs into any computer. For big photo and music

When I wore my new flash drive to dinner a few years ago, my young
grandson was impressed, but my son-in-law told me the people at work
call them geek pendants. ;-)

Ann,

According to Legacy there should not be a need to change the jet engine in
Vista as it is a later version (and may be different) than the jet engine which
they recommend.

Did your husband backup to your hard drive or Flash? I'm moving towards
thinking that it maybe backing up to Flash which is causing the difficulty,
although I note the post from Jack where he says he has an on-going problem
like yours with vista. I back up to my HD and then copy to Flash btw. and I do
not back up the multimedia files (far too many!).

I do not have Legacy on my Vista machine, I'm afraid.

Re: [LegacyUG] INDEX 2 columns and printing

2009-01-10 Thread JCTripp
Momalot66,
Glad to hear you resolved the Index 1 2 and 3 column situation. This option
for number of columns can be used for both the Name Index and the Location
Index when you choose to add an Index to a report.

If adding paper to your printer didn't force those 3 pages to print, try
this:

To get just a few pages printed for any report, in your case, pages 1,2 and
3, I would go right back to that report and print the first 3 pages.
If you haven't messed around with selecting other reports, you can get
right to your last report by looking at the very top toolbar that has words
only and
select (click on) REPORTS
from the drop down list, select (click on) GO TO LAST REPORT
select (click on) PREVIEW
on the right side under the word print, select (click on) RANGE
in this Range screen on the left side you can
select (click on) PAGES
in the white rectangular window next to PAGES
enter by typing1-3in that window
That sends a message to your printer to print pages one through three.
Many "old" HP OfficeJet printers are still in use today. that's a keeper.
Continued good weather to you, Jane Tripp

It's almost impossible to fix a problem that we cannot reproduce. If I
could

figure out what is going on then I'd be able to get it fixed.

For now, If a normal backup to your hard drive works do that and then just
copy

the .zip file to you flash drive.

You aren't alone. I've had this problem for a couple of years i.e it started
with V6. The suggestions on the Legacy web site aren't at all helpful for
Vista users since it makes no mention of Vista. I backup to a hard drive and
get this problem if I don't start the backup immediately after starting the
program.

After exhausting the options offered by the web site you are left with
"export to a new file". That worked for me for a few days, then the problem
returned. I was really unhappy about the solution as I wasn't 100% convinced
that ALL of my data would transfer. I don't think I've lost anything and
have kept all my backups, but I still get the error 91 problem quite
regularly

Ron,

Yes I have always backed up to a flash drive. I will try backing up to the
hard drive. I bought this Dell this past August and didn't use the Acer
anymore until I started having this error 91. Then I would take the flash
drive and restore on the Acer to see if it was a good back up. As far as I
can tell it looks ok on the Acer. I believe that I tried to back up on the
same flash drive from the Acer and did not get error 91. I am not sure about

that. I am getting very confused about what I have tried.

As I understand the error 91 instructions it doesn't seem to mention Vista.
I have not tried uninstalling and reinstalling or the export file per
instruction #3.

I found the Acer is a 32 bit machine. Some of the flash drives have just one

file, some have about ten. All are Legacy backups that I have done yesterday

and today.

I will try the uninstall - reinstall or the export now.

Thank you for your patience and suggestions, I am quite upset about this and

it is good to know someone is trying to help me. I have used Legacy since v.

2. On a lighter note even before Sherry was working for Millennia. We had
corresponded on the users group. I guess here is where I put Grin. I am
actually wringing my hands over this as this is years of work that I am now
too old to do over.

Best regards,
Ann

Ann,

Are you always backing up to a flash drive? What happens if you back up
normally ie. to the hard drive on your PC? It is, btw, usually easier to
concentrate on just one computer as having two can just make things even
more confusing!

Since you are on Vista it seems ulikely that the problem is due to the jet
engine. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Legacy? The fact that
you have the problem on 2 PCs doesn't imspire confidence that this will work

though.

I'm afraid that I do not have a 64bit machine to test on. Just had a
thought - how many files have you on the flash drive?

Did you export to a Legacy database? Or did you export to a GEDCOM and
then import to a new Legacy database? Try the latter if you haven't
already. But I would recommend taking a look at the Jet Engine first.

In the Archives their is quite q few posts on Error 91.

It's almost impossible to fix a problem that we cannot reproduce. If I could
figure out what is going on then I'd be able to get it fixed.

For now, If a normal backup to your hard drive works do that and then just copy
the .zip file to you flash drive.

It is no longer necessary to be invited to Gmail, as it once was. If
you want an account with them, just go to http://mail.google.com/ and
sign up.

I can't recommend this service highly enough. Almost everything that
I've heard people gripe about with other services, Gmail handles with ease.

- good spam identification and management,
- delivers all mail without filtering out what "they" think is spam -
I'd rather make that determination myself, thanks, and it's easy to spot
on the screen,
- loads of space - I have over 54,000 emails sitting at my account,
since I only delete spam, and am using a mere 19% of the space available
to me,

- loads of features to customise the web interface to your own liking,
- excellent search facilities - which makes it a breeze to locate that
email from five years ago from Whosit who said something about widgets...

- and so on.

And it's free! Give it a try - it won't hurt, and you'll be pleasantly
surprised, I'm sure. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Error 91 Ta Dah!

Ron,

I did the export, still received error 91, I would give my eyeteeth if I
still had them, to know what causes error 91 then I would never ever do what
causes it again.

I asked my dear patient 80 year old husband if he would uninstall &
reinstall for me which he did. He said he noticed when he tried to back up
he was asked if he wanted the multimedia in the same folder. He selected
yes. He tried several backups on both machines and they seemed to do ok. He
thinks that could be what causes error 91 not answering yes to multimedia in
same folder. I don't have any multimedia hence never selected yes.

Re the jet engine, I re-read #5. It gives Windows 95, 98 & NT to use
Jet40WP8_9xNT.exe. Windows Millennium use Jet40SP8_WMe.exe, for Windows 2000
use Windows2000-KB829558-x86-ENU.exe, for XP use WindowsXP-KB829558-x86-ENU
there isn't a paragraph for Vista. My computer is supposed to be set up to
automatically received Windows updates. The operative word is supposed I
don't know if it does or doesn't. I will see if I can find a jet engine for
Vista.

Ron, you are one in a million!!! Thank you for helping me.

Vista is not mentioned as various operating systems only apply to the jet

Both of the HP printers I've had allow you to select which pages you
want to print. After you click print, the little gray window pops up.
The default is "All". if you go down the list the next is "Current

Hope that helps.

Vista is not mentioned as various operating systems only apply to the jet
engine. The two suggestions above apply to all o/s, so you really should try
them, and I would do #3 first.

 Ann,

Sometimes posts on LUG can be confusing. There is not a
problem with printing with version 7.0.0.86. However, with
some set-ups it would seem that after updating, Legacy does
not automatically recognise the printer. If so restart your
 PC and reopen Legacy.

Researcher City
Researcher State
Researcher Postal Code

#1. All that I have on her is an e-mail address. Is there an
alternative template that would show her e-mail address? Maybe her
phone number?

If you only have an e-mail address and telephone number you won't be
wanting to use a mailing address, etc so why not put the e-mail address
and 'phone number instead.

#2. Further, I am confused by the Option at the bottom of the template
where it shows "Exclude from Reports." I would like for her name to
appear on any report, but not her address, e-mail, etc. At the same
time on the template's Output Preview, it shows her name with [ADDRESS
FOR PRIVATE USE]. Does this mean if I do *NOT* put a checkmark next to
"Exclude from Reports," only her name will appear?

Yes, that's what Ouput Preview means - it's a preview of what will show
when you create report.

If you check "Exclude from Reports" that is exactly what will happen -
that Source will not appear on Reports at all.

source.

There's good news and bad news!

The good news is that is not necessary to create a new source for every
newspaper. The bad news is that there is a bug and I have replicated
your experience. I have submitted a Bug Report.

Further good news is that the Citation will print correctly if you use
Endnotes rather than Footnotes. Personally, I prefer always to use
Endnotes so this bug is not a great problem to me.

This sounds exactly like the issue (actually 3-4 issues) that we discussed
in the thread "Master Source Subsequent Citation Issue" in early December. I
submitted some bug reports, although I have no idea whether they were
received and given any priority.

You are correct when you say "...the program is only looking at the master
source to determine if a subsequent footnote is needed and not the source
detail".

In some reports, the subsequent citation format is not being used at all (so
your problem won't occur, but your report will be bulkier). For example, the
Descendant Book Report uses subsequent citations when footnotes are on each
page and not when endnotes are used instead.

I have recently switched to using Legacy primarily because of the ease of
using the SourceWriter. I realize that there have been bugs but was content
to wait for the bugs to be worked out. With all of the recent upgrades I am
not sure if the SourceWriter is now working as planned or if I need to
adjust the way I have been entering the source information. For example I
have been creating a master source which covers all issues of a particular
newpaper (lumping). In the source detail I enter the title, date, etc. as
prompted. If I run a report where say the first footnote using that
newpaper is an obituary for Person A---it looks fine. If that same obituary
is cited again it also looks fine. The problem is that if an obituary from
the same newspaper is then cited for Person B the name of the newspaper is
not included in that footnote or any later footnotes--the program thinks it
is a subsequent footnote. It appears that the program is only looking at
the master source to determine if a subsequent footnote is needed and not
the source detail. When multiple newpapers are cited more than once within
a report it is even more problematic as it is impossible to tell which
newspaper is being cited.

If I need to be patient I will continue to do so but I hate to enter a lot
of information that I may need to change. Any input or insight would be
appreciated.

Yes I have always backed up to a flash drive. I will try backing up to the

anymore until I started having this error 91.

I will try the uninstall - reinstall or the export now.

Amazing! I looked at FTM many years ago and found it to be almost the
opposite of user-friendly. I used Reunion for Windows for many years before
coming to Legacy about a year ago. Legacy has the same screen look as
Reunion, so it was an easy switch for me, but both are so user-friendly that
it's hard for me to understand why one wouldn't be able to just start
entering people from Day 1 and go from there.

I don't use the Source Writer, and I agree that it might not be particularly
user-friendly, although I think the designers thought it would be. The basic
source system is straight-forward and provides all the functionality I will
ever need. In either case, Legacy allows you to preview the source and easy
edit capability, so if the first time doesn't give you just what you were
looking for, fixing isn't much of a problem.

I did find Geoff's Training CDs to be very worthwhile because they gave me
insight into possibilities. The one on tagging was especially useful as this
feature is better than what I had used before (the Reunion version I was
using had only 1 tag).

Sorry I can't help you with specific problems - I'll leave this to the much
more experienced folks in this forum. However, I too am a recent
"immigrant" from FTM, versions 10 and 16. I too found the FTM programs
more user friendly than Legacy. In fact, we use FTM as part of our

learn how to use computers - via an application rather than abstract drills.

Having said that, IMHO Legacy provides many more electronic cubby holes,
thus providing for extensive means of documenting entries as compared to
FTM. I am working to learn Legacy via frequentl use, and the CDs. Based on
my experience, I would never move our parents straight into Legacy. I know

Hello, thank you for asking:

I have had a series of issues - below are just a few.
My first post had to do with the 'Ibid' feature. The online Help Index
presented this as if it was available. The Customize menu had a check box to
enable it. The Legacy Web page had a Comparsion Chart to other genealogy
software in which it indicated that it (and Roots Magic) offered the Ibid
feature when two others did not - using it as a selling point! So, I wonder
why this is not working. I spent a lot of extra time going over things
trying to figure out what I am not doing right. I get on this forum and one
person (Ron) tells me that it is no longer available.
Similar situation for the Source Template Conversion Tool. They got
instructions how to use this thing. I could not find it and, again, I am
taking extra time trying to learn this and figure out how to access and use
it. I really could have used that because I imported a genealogy file and
half of my citations went into Basic template. I wanted them all under the
Source Writer. But, I then find out that the Source Template Conversion
Tool is still a product of someone's imagination yet - even though the
directions are telling me how to use it. I had to work on rewriting the
Sources/Citations individually in the Source Writer and deleting the older
ones. Then I learn from this forum again that it was either discontinued or
never started.

I wrote about Sibling Relationships - I have three children in a family file
who were born to the same mother but two of them had a different father.
Legacy is incorrectly labeling them in the Relationships reports as "step
brothers" when they are actually half brothers. I reported this two weeks
ago and it is still not corrected. I want to print a genealogy report for a
friend of mine whose Family History I researched - and I cannot give him
something that looks unprofessional as to misclassify his relationship to
his half brother and say 'Oh...it was the software! '
Sources/Citations as footnotes at the end of the page: I figured this will
be easier - everything is right on one page to read. Well, one of the facts
in my Descendant book report referred to citation no. 18. But, there was no
18 in the footnotes, it only went as high as 17.

As a side note, It seems like none of these programs are blended-family
friendly - if you want to put the children with the step parent who raised
them for 20 years. Adoptions are also another issue when you want to include
the natural parents (when they are known) but want to put the child under

it does not show you your own posts! (If I send something to the group

[LegacyUG] Genealogical info from my sister-in-law's sister

2009-01-10 Thread Arnold Sprague
As noted in the subject line, I just received information from my
sister-in-law's sister. I want to source it using the SourceWriter
template. The best template I can find is Personal Knowledge.
However, it asks for the "old fashioned"

Researcher Mailing Address
Researcher City
Researcher State
Researcher Postal Code

#1. All that I have on her is an e-mail address. Is there an
alternative template that would show her e-mail address? Maybe her
phone number?

#2. Further, I am confused by the Option at the bottom of the
template where it shows "Exclude from Reports." I would like for her
name to appear on any report, but not her address, e-mail, etc. At
the same time on the template's Output Preview, it shows her name
with [ADDRESS FOR PRIVATE USE]. Does this mean if I do *NOT* put a
checkmark next to "Exclude from Reports," only her name will appear?

Thank you,
Arnold

Ann,

Are you always backing up to a flash drive? What happens if you back up
normally ie. to the hard drive on your PC? It is, btw, usually easier to
concentrate on just one computer as having two can just make things even more
confusing!

Since you are on Vista it seems ulikely that the problem is due to the jet
engine. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Legacy? The fact that you
have the problem on 2 PCs doesn't imspire confidence that this will work though.

I'm afraid that I do not have a 64bit machine to test on. Just had a thought -
how many files have you on the flash drive?

What screens, how different. Updates may make some subtle changes
compared to the originally installed version, and artwork on boxes or
disks does not always reflect the actual program. Things can also look
different depending on monitor shape, resolution and the Windows themes
one is using. Unless you are having a problem I wouldn't worry about it.

2009-01-10 Thread Steve Voght
Brenda,

I'm not seeing this error in my Descendant Narrative report, either --
if anything, in a few spots where I would expect the source page to
use the "subsequent citation" format it still uses the full source
name (although that might be because my text details differ between
each individual citation in most places.)

There were some bugs with SW in older versions, so can you verify that
you're running the latest update? Go to the Legacy Home tab to
check... it should say version 7.0.0.86 in a box on the right column.

RE: [LegacyUG] Without a doubt

2009-01-10 Thread Red Sanders

jaemtp,

Sorry I can't help you with specific problems - I'll leave this to the much
more experienced folks in this forum. However, I too am a recent "immigrant"
from FTM, versions 10 and 16. I too found the FTM programs more user friendly
than Legacy. In fact, we use FTM as part of our community classes for parents
in our school district to encourage them to learn how to use computers - via an
application rather than abstract drills.

Having said that, IMHO Legacy provides many more electronic cubby holes, thus
providing for extensive means of documenting entries as compared to FTM. I am
working to learn Legacy via frequentl use, and the CDs. Based on my
experience, I would never move our parents straight into Legacy. I know you
are looking more for specific answers, rather than encouragement...so will just
say, keep at it...I believe you'll be rewarded for doing so.

[LegacyUG] Without a doubtTo: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com
Hello, thank you for asking:

I have had a series of issues - below are just a few.
My first post had to do with the 'Ibid' feature. The online Help Index
presented this as if it was available. The Customize menu had a check box to
enable it. The Legacy Web page had a Comparsion Chart to other genealogy
software in which it indicated that it (and Roots Magic) offered the Ibid
feature when two others did not - using it as a selling point! So, I wonder
why this is not working. I spent a lot of extra time going over things trying
to figure out what I am not doing right. I get on this forum and one person
(Ron) tells me that it is no longer available.
Similar situation for the Source Template Conversion Tool. They got
instructions how to use this thing. I could not find it and, again, I am taking
extra time trying to learn this and figure out how to access and use it. I
really could have used that because I imported a genealogy file and half of my
citations went into Basic template. I wanted them all under the Source Writer.
But, I then find out that the Source Template Conversion Tool is still a
product of someone's imagination yet - even though the directions are telling
me how to use it. I had to work on rewriting the Sources/Citations individually
in the Source Writer and deleting the older ones. Then I learn from this forum
again that it was either discontinued or never started.
I wrote about Sibling Relationships - I have three children in a family file
who were born to the same mother but two of them had a different father. Legacy
is incorrectly labeling them in the Relationships reports as "step brothers"
when they are actually half brothers. I reported this two weeks ago and it is
still not corrected. I want to print a genealogy report for a friend of mine
whose Family History I researched - and I cannot give him something that looks
unprofessional as to misclassify his relationship to his half brother and say
'Oh...it was the software! '
Sources/Citations as footnotes at the end of the page: I figured this will be
easier - everything is right on one page to read. Well, one of the facts in my
Descendant book report referred to citation no. 18. But, there was no 18 in the
footnotes, it only went as high as 17.

As a side note, It seems like none of these programs are blended-family
friendly - if you want to put the children with the step parent who raised them
for 20 years. Adoptions are also another issue when you want to include the
natural parents (when they are known) but want to put the child under the
adopted parents who raised them.

I was using FTM vers 10, which was from 2003 when I started genealogy research.
I just sat down and started typing - never had an issue with it. Several mos.
ago, I figure maybe I want to move up to something more "modern" - forgetting
what I already learned about technology - the more sophisticated it gets, the
more problems!

Thank you for your help. !

Re: [LegacyUG] UPGRADE after DELUXE 7 differences?

2009-01-10 Thread Gary Templeman
What screens, how different. Updates may make some subtle changes
compared to the originally installed version, and artwork on boxes or disks
does not always reflect the actual program. Things can also look different
depending on monitor shape, resolution and the Windows themes one is using.
Unless you are having a problem I wouldn't worry about it.

It appears to me that my Legacy 7 Deluxe discs may be slightly different
than my Legacy 7.0.0.86. Is this right? Screens appear different.

2009-01-10 Thread Ann Parsons

I turned off the computer and turned it back on. I then did back up, got
error 91 which always puts me out of the program. I went back in did check
repair, again put me out of program, went back in, did back up, error 91,
again put me out of the program, went back in did check repair, did back up,
error 91. I did this a total of 4 times.
I looked at the backup #1 is 7749 KB, #2 is 7737 KB, #3 is 7737, #4 is 7787.

I too am of the old school where I throw nothing at all away, never,
ever. Then when I need to search on something, I merely hit Ctr-F and
enter the word or phrase in the Find box.
Or, if I am interested in all the helpful posts Sherry sends, I
merely sort on her name.
Of course, I use an e-mail program where all the posts, in and out,
are stored on my hard drive.
Of course, when one can buy a huge hard drive (1000GB) for $109,
having plenty of room for old, old, old messages is no big deal.

marry the biological father. I did not know how to enter her
husband’s name and keep the child separate from this marriage. I am
not sure what action I took, but in one of my attempts, Legacy created
two marriages. The report showed: “she first married someone. the
child from this marriage was " - which is not correct. I also tried
entering her husband as her first and then unlinking the child from
him. However, it seems that Legacy will allow one parent to be linked
to an existing child, but you cannot unlink a child from just one
parent. It didn't work. So I just deleted all three individuals from
the file (child bio mother and her husband) and left everything blank
until I know how to proceed.

Create a "husband" for the woman, but on the Marriage Information screen
check the box for "This couple did not marry." You can open the Wording
Options tab and change the wording for Reports if you wish. Add the
child to this partnership. Then create a second husband for the woman -
the one she actually married.

Re: [LegacyUG] Subsequent Citations

2009-01-10 Thread Brenda Barker
Jenny,
I just tried using the SW for "Newspapers - Print Editions" template.
 Source:
Source List Name: Cincinnati Times
Location State: Ohio
Location City: Cincinnati
Title: Cincinnati Times
Source Detail:
Article: Person A Obit
Date: 23 Oct 1955
Page: 3
Column: 1

Next I wanted to use the Cincinnati Times for a birth announcement of Person B
so I entered the data and used "Cite a Master Source" and selected Cincinnati
Times. The Source Detail box opened and I filled in the information asked
(Person B Birth Announcement, 12 Feb 1960, p. 4, col. 3. I generated a
descendants narrative of their parent so that both sources should be on the
same report.
Footnote 1: "Person A Obit," (Cincinnati) Cincinnati Times, 23 Oct 1955, p.3,
col. 1
Footnote 2: "Person B Birth Announcement," p. 3, col. 2.
The second footnote should also list the name and location of the newspaper and
it does not. The name and location of the newspaper should only be omitted if
one is citing the same article a second time.
I noted that in your experiment you used the same date for both newspapers and
that could be the difference. I sounds like it may be necessary to create a
separate master source for each edition of the newspaper rather than lump all
editions together as a single master source. If that is the case then it would
be helpful if date appeared on the Source page rather than in Source Detail.
Thanks,
Brenda

Can you give us an example of the citations your reports are showing, as
this does not seem to tally with my (limited) experience. Also, tell us
exactly which SW template you are using.

I have not created any SW Sources for newspapers yet, but I just opened
my Test file and created a Source using the "Newspapers - Print
Editions" template. For State, City and Title I entered "England",
"London" and "The Times" respectively. Citing that Source for the birth
and death of person A, I entered the details as Article "Obit Adams",
  date "1 January 2009", Page "9", Column "A".
Then I cited the same source for the death of person B, but I put "Obit
Nemo" as the Article, used the same date and different Page and Column.

When I ran a FGS report, the first birth and death were numbered 2 and
the citation appeared as "2. "Obit Adams" (London) The Times, 1 January
  2009, p.9, col.A". The second person's death was numbered 7 and the
citation appeared as "7. "Obit Nemo" (London) The Times, 1 January
  2009, p.6, col.C"

That's just as I would have expected.

I create a source with:

Source List Name - "Birth Announcement - [person's name here]"
Type - "Written Announcement"
Author - The person who wrote/sent it.
Title - "Birth Announcement of [person's name here]".
Publication Facts - The date it was mailed/received (whichever you prefer)
Text of source - The contents or the announcement transcribed completely.
Source detail - Use the Source title.

Works for me and gives all the information in a readable, coherent and

RE: [LegacyUG] Without a doubt

2009-01-10 Thread ronald ferguson

Ed,

Legacy has considerable flexibility when it comes to dealing with multiple
marriages/ adoptions etc and the problem is getting to know them all.

>From your post it would seem that at present you do not have the mother, child
>and (unknown) father in your files. so firstly enter the details of the mother
>then the child and link the child to the (existing) mother, giving the child

>tube these days). Go to the marriage screen and check "this couple never
>married" and change the wording to "had a relationship with" or "partnered" or
>whatever else suits you.

Now marry the mother to her spouse ie. link the mother to the (existing)
individual, entering any marriage details if you have them.

You can now link the child to the (existing) parents and set the status to
adoptive for the father and natural for the mother. As the child has now the
surname of the new father enter that in the AKAs which you can switch with the
birth name should you so wish.

I have written this off the top of my head, so if you hit a problem do come
back.

[LegacyUG] Sourcing a Birth Announcement

2009-01-10 Thread Alan Jones

Sourcing a Birth Announcement

I was wondering how one would source a Birth Announcement card one gets
in the mail from the parents announcing a child's birth? They usually
have the name of the child weigh, length, and parents names.

I was looking in the source writer but could not find anything I liked.
Most everything for birth is a birth certificate and the various letter
options did not seem to apply to a generic card sent out to many family
and friends.

Am I missing something or is this style that may need to be added?

thanks

Alan

I don't keep them! My program automatically deletes the messages after
5 days (I can set the number of days to whatever I like) but I can mark
some to be kept if I want a particular thread for a bit longer. I
figure that I can always access the Archives if I need to look at past

Re: [LegacyUG] Error 91 maybe solved????

2009-01-10 Thread Ann Parsons
Ron,

I updated to .86 then entered a few items into the database. I did backup
and got error 91, I did check/repair and received an error message, the
first one in months, that I had 1 source repository record referred to that
did not exist. I corrected that. I tried back up got error 91, did
check/repair, tried back up it went ok. I then checked drive G where I had
backed up to. The first back up, the one with the error message was 7735 KB,
the last back up, the one that went ok was 7733 KB. The only thing I did was
correct the repository to the FHL. I tried backup again on a different flash
drive, it went ok. It has 7733 KB.

Hopefully doing as you advised has eliminated whatever was causing error 91
message. We not so skilled with computers are a lucky bunch of people to
have you helping us.

Thank you,
Ann Parsons

Ann,

Sometimes posts on LUG can be confusing. There is not a problem with
printing with version 7.0.0.86. However, with some set-ups it would seem
that after updating, Legacy does not automatically recognise the printer. If
so restart your PC and reopen Legacy.

Ron ... Thanks so much for this tidbit of info. I really appreciate it! I
also have had the same question as the original poster but never even
thought to ask about it!

Now, Mike, you know I'm 100% in agreement.

The UK is a Kingdom *not* a country, and England is a country which is part
of Great Britain. The latter comprising England, Scotland and Wales. The UK
comprises Great Britain plus Northern Ireland.

Hvaing said that, we do not use eg. "England, Great Britain", only "England"
