RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy on a mac

2008-10-03 Thread Keith Bage
Thanks Patti & Janis for confirming my thoughts. I have Vista and would be
installing that on my Windows partition. I think the consensus seems to be
that Fusion is the best of the emulators. This is quite a big step for me as
I've always been a PC guy. I will however, also be retaining my PC (at least
for the immediate future) for any programs that just refuse to work on the
Mac.

Heading into my local Apple store tomorrow :)

[LegacyUG] Legacy on a mac

2008-10-03 Thread Keith Bage
I'm sure this question has been covered many times so I apologise in advance
but could someone reassure me that Legacy WILL run on a Mac using either
Boot Camp, Fusion or Parallels and if so which of these PC emulators are
recommended.

Thanks

[LegacyUG] Charting refresh problem

2008-08-03 Thread Keith Bage
This evening I have produced a Full Fan report for myself and at the time
one of my 3x great grandmothers was missing. I then added her (first name
only) to my database and refreshed the chart but she did not appear. I
changed chart types, increased # of generations and back etc. all to no
avail. I then closed the chart and re launched legacy charting to find she
was now there. It would therefore seem the refresh is not working.

I'm using 7.0.118.

RE: [LegacyUG] Citing LONG!! url's

2008-06-26 Thread Keith Bage
Thanks all for your comments on LONG!! Urls. I guess I was getting hung up
on the "guide" text entered within the source writer templates. Since I
don't have the "new" Elizabeth Shown Mills book I was unable to check what
is recommended there ( I would love it but it's just way too difficult &
expensive to get a hold of).

Have referenced ancestry.com it's self for now (though I don't really like
that).

Tom,

It just looks so unbelievably horrible in the citation.

If that URL gets you to the obituary your are citing, then it's the correct
"specific" URL.

www.ancestry.com only gets you to Ancestry's home page.

What is your objection to using the longer URL?

[LegacyUG] Mapping addresses

2008-06-26 Thread Keith Bage
I have a question about mapping locations in relation to addresses.

I manage my locations with 4 place holders

e.g. Brenham, Washington County, Texas, USA

I also use the addresses such as burial addresses

Now let's say for a persons birth I enter as the location Brenham,
Washington County, Texas, USA

I also use this location for the burial. However I add a burial address of
Priarie Lea Cemetery in the burial address.

The problem is that I can only map both instances at one location i.e. the
town centre of Brenham. But I would have liked to have a push pin in place
for the cemetery too. How do I manage to do that without creating other
location with a different structure than my 4 place holders?

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy vs TMG

2008-05-30 Thread Keith Bage
Thanks to all for the comments on Legacy vs TMG. I must say that I am a long
time legacy user and advocate of the program. My main aim here was simply to
get a view of what is seen to be in one program and not in the another.

My personal view on TMG is that it has some great features, but is very
"clunky". Personally I don't find the learning curve a problem it's just the
quirky implementation of some of the features.

I have tried hard to love TMG and there are many thing's I do like about it,
but it's just so uninspiring to look at and navigate.

Roberta, about a month ago I did the same after a number of comments on the
LUG, I didn't have any trouble importing my db into TMG but I found it to be
a very unfriendly interface as compared to Legacy. It reminded me of the
sort of interfaces one would see in the days of my old Atari 1040 or
Commodore 64 computers so I uninstalled it and now I sit here updating my
familytree in Legacy waiting for the new version to become available.

I downloaded a trial of TMG last night to see what all the fuss about
Witness' was about.

Took quite awhile to download, quite awhile to install, and after an
enormous amount of time waiting for the process to import my current
database - I got tired of waiting and went to bed, this morning the computer
was locked up and still no database.

I poked around the sample database and was not impressed.Very Busy
Interface. Relationships are scattered all over the place. Adding People to
events instead of events to people as in Legacy did not seem to save me much
in the way of time/effort. I found it hard to look at people as family units
with TMG's layout. I perused the Manual for TMG and was not overly excited
about anything I found there either.

I am not looking to change from Legacy just browsing, Killing a bit of time,
and hopefully learning a few things but I'll delete the whole thing when I
get home tonight, as definately not for me.

Robert,

That's not a bad workaround, but then you lose 4 of your tags. I would think
without too much programming work this would be done at the click of a
button.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy vs TMG

2008-05-29 Thread Keith Bage
Thanks Geoff! And completely "unbiased" eh.

To be fair it did "remind" me of some damn good options TMG doesn't have.
Still, very interested to see how the sourcewriter compares. Obviously I
still haven't seen that BUT I think it was a big "miss" not to allow the
user to create their own source types (and I do know we can override them).

[LegacyUG] Colour coding - A thought for the future

2008-05-29 Thread Keith Bage
I have just submitted a suggestion regarding colour coding in Legacy for the
future and would like to get others thoughts.

One suggestion is to use the ancestor colour coding within the Index view
(though I forgot to mention the Name & Marriage lists). Imagine being able
to see in these lists which line the names belong to. Personally I think
this would be very useful.

This could also be extended to colour code event types. Again these colours
could be seen in the events window and/or chronology view.

Of course there should be config options to turn this on/off.

If someone happens to tell me this is already in v7 I will be overjoyed
(once I have it that is).

[LegacyUG] No Legacy v7 this week

2008-05-12 Thread Keith Bage
So, based on the Legacy News I just received there will be no release of
Legacy v7 to the general public this week.

Seems that anyone attending NGS in the States will be allowed to get a
pre-release at the show.

I find this a little annoying (to say the least). Not that Legacy isn't
going to be available just yet, but that being in the UK it is simply not
practical to ever attend such a show, which makes me feel penalised somehow.
This is also all the more annoying since there was no Legacy representation
at the UK's largest calendar event, with similar opportunity.

RE: [LegacyUG] Combining data with sources

No I wouldn't. Date and place would be enough for me :) I do take your
point, but that would be taking it to silly levels.

As for double entering I don't see this as a huge problem. I'm sure the
source clipboard could be amended to paste the source clipboard to both date
& place fields.

RE: [LegacyUG] Living flag changes

2008-05-07 Thread Keith Bage
Ron,

Thanks for this.

Of course I was referring to the living flag being set to NO and not YES. In
addition I wasn't quite clear in my initial statement, in that I meant if no
dates were entered against a person they would not be set as "not living".

What I hadn't realised (and I thank you for), is that " If there are any
ancestors of a person set to deceased because of age they also will be
set to "Not Living".

Thanks for the assistance.

[LegacyUG] Combining data with sources

2008-05-07 Thread Keith Bage
How do others handle the situation where you have one piece of info from one
source and one from another that combine into one field. I'm not explaining
this well so let me give an example.

I have a death date from source #1.

I have a death location from source #2.

If I allocate a source to the death date (source 1)the date AND location are
highlighted to indicate they are from the same source. If I then add source
2 that appears to relate to the date as well as the location.

So, can I combine the date & location OR should they be in separate "events"
i.e alt.death

Appologies for the explanation (it's late).

Thanks for any assistance.

[LegacyUG] Living flag changes

2008-05-06 Thread Keith Bage
I'm afraid I've historically not been very good at maintaining the "Living"
flag in Legacy and drastically need to tidy this up. Does anyone have a
quick way of doing this? I am aware of the "Advanced set living" function
BUT this is only any good if I have a date of death. The main problem for me
is that I have many instances where all I have is a name with no dates.
These may be many generations back but I don't know of a way to identify
these as being beyond by 120 year "living" flag default.

Any help appreciated.

Hi everybody.

I´ve been using Legacy Charting Companion v.2.0.9 for quite a long time.

Just installed version 7.

I´m not able to generate a descendant chart oriented from left-to-right (only
top-bottom).

Does anyone know how to do the trick?

(I believe Erik has sent an e-mail earlier today asking the same question)

Will there be other types of charts and/or reports??

Tks.

2008-05-04 Thread Keith Bage
Reg & Dave,

A couple of points of note.

1. The original thread your complaining about WAS about Legacy.

2. You seem to be doing EXACTLY what your complaining about and
discussing a NON Legacy topic.

So I ask, can you please practice what you preach and suggest that the Admin

Dave well said,

I was of general idea that purpose of LUG was just that a site were those of
us who may strike problems can come to learn from others who may have come
across same problem in using or understanding LEGACY and it's Add-Ones.

WDYTYA is a British TV program not a station. It's success in the UK over
recent years has helped fuel the interest in Genealogy. This show is linked
to that program and is also sponseored by other societies etc such as the
Society of Genealogists. It is THE premier show in the UK.

RE: [LegacyUG] Who Do You Think You Are - Live!

2008-05-01 Thread Keith Bage
As far as I know there is no LUG in the UK. This event is something I have
mentioned to Geoff in the past and at that time he expressed an interest in
attending, but that obviously hasn't transpired.

I realise it is an expense that Millenia might feel not worth the expense
but it is a HUGE event with I would imagine HUGE potential. I certainly know
that the Guild bookstall far exceeded it's previous best in terms of sales
at last years event.

No problems at all. I actually used Vista from it's release with few

however if your buying a new PC with Vista already installed on it, you
shoudln't have any of these problems.

2008-03-09 Thread Keith Bage
Renee,

I saw this the first time round and was a little surprised that no-one
commented. The mapping sounds like a nice option. I'll need to see it in
action to see how useful it is going to be. I haven't bought any of the
"other" mapping packages as yet so this will be a nice feature to have
without any outlay.

What I'm most looking forward to is the sourcing features. I just hope the
these source templates aren't too US based, and are still suitable for us in
the UK and other countries. I am loving the Charting though and if the other
features are half as good then this is going to be a great upgrade. Looking
forward to its full release very much.

2008-03-04 Thread Keith Bage
My intial thoughts:

1. I like the imitation of the latest Microsoft Office with the ribbon et
all.
2. Very good ease of use
3. I like the ability to expand/collapse the tree based on "marriages"
4. I like the ability to add a colour shade for females and males separately
5. I like the ability to have different border styles etc too
6. like the ability to drag individuals, entire lines or just generations
7. Like the ease of adding/reducing generations
8. Like the picture options , though cropping would be nice too.
9. Text options are good too, again being picky, spell checking would be
nice.
10 Navigation is good.

What's missing?

1. Inability to resize individual boxes
2. Not much else

This looks very promising and just what we've all been waiting for.

RE: [LegacyUG] Speaking of alternate names...

2008-02-27 Thread Keith Bage
I would record only names that I have documented evidence of, with the
exception of adding the married name of females.

I would not add all the "possible" variations of spellings for instance,
unless verified as actually being used or your name list will be swamped.

RE: [LegacyUG] Organising unlinked people

2008-02-27 Thread Keith Bage
Valerie,

I am a fellow member of the Guild of One-Name studies and wonder if you have
asked this question on their forum. You may get answers there more in line
with recording one name studies.

Whilst adding in Legacy is one possibility is is possibly not the most ideal
place to do this. Most one namers tend to use a second package more focused
on recording such large amounts of data and use packages like Legacy purely
for the recording of trees.

This is pretty much what I do myself and it works well though there is an
element of double entry.

If you wish to discuss this further please drop me a line or stop by the
GOONS Forum.

RE: [LegacyUG] saving family files

2007-01-13 Thread Keith Bage
Cheryl,

I use Legacy to record the lineages of my One Name Study of the surname
BAGE. This means there will be many unconnected family lines. However, I
like to have all of this in just one file. This way it's easy to navigate
and see the full picture. I can always export if I need a particular family
separate.

I do however make use of some other files, i.e. I have one with all the BAGE
IGI information in which I refer to and when ready I move this info into my
main file. This method works well in my opinion.

RE: [LegacyUG] Windows Vista

2007-01-09 Thread Keith Bage
Have read others comments on Windows Vista I thought I'd add my two penneth
worth.

I have Windows Vista installed on my PC and I reported to the group several
weeks ago that Legacy works fine on it, at least during my somewhat limited
testing of it. Like many thing's with pc's, the requirements will depend
heavily on what your going to be running on your system. I heard mention of
games in a previous comment and games are usually the most demanding of all
applications, especially with regard to memory & graphics capability. I have
1 Gig of memory and all works just fine, running Office and Legacy together.

The Vista install is approx 15Gig which is why they quote the need for 15Gig
free space. Hard drive space is so cheap now this really shouldn't be a
problem to anyone. I just bought a 320 Gig drive at Christmas for £65 so I
could install Vista without disrupting my XP installation. My machine is
about two years old, I built it myself a couple of Christmas's ago, but it
is a reasonable spec still, i.e. 64bit AMD processor, Powerful grpahics card
etc. and it runs Vista very well. Vista runs a pc performance routine and
gives your pc a score which will be used in future to check it's suitability
for running different software. My system scores very reasonably even after
two years.

One of the keys changes in Vista is the very nice user interface, with
transparency, task bar images etc and to utilise this you do need a good
graphics card in your machine.

I have had some driver issues with Vista but when I have contacted
manufacturers they tell me they have new drivers ready to despatch, but they
will not be released until Vista's official release on 30th Jan.

One frustration I find in the genealogy world is peoples reluctance to
changing pc's and components. I find with them that you have to be prepared
to continue your investment in them. Any company would write off an asset
like a pc over 3 years and replace it, yet some expect to get Vista running
on their old pc bought in the Windows 98 days. That's just not feasible, and
personally I don't think Microsoft should be blamed for this. Many of us
think nothing of paying year on year for Ancestry subscriptions, you need to
also make that regular investment in your equipment.

RE: [LegacyUG] Suggest a New Feature

2006-12-27 Thread Keith Bage
Don,

I'm not aware of any such visible list for the eyes of the Legacy community.
Millenia like to keep developments close to their chest, so as not to be
outdone by the opposition (quite understandably of course). I agree it would
be great to see the list. I'd personally be amazed if better integrated
charting isn't top of the wants list for many users.

[LegacyUG] Legacy with Vista

2006-12-26 Thread Keith Bage
For those interested, I have just been testing Legacy on Vista (the new
version of Windows due end of January). I can report that Legacy installed
just fine and worked in operation without error. Of course I have only done
basic testing i.e. Installing, navigating, entering basic data, viewing
reports etc but all went well. This of course does not constitute full
in-depth testing but I thought some might like to know that on the face of
thing's all worked well.

Any word on Legacy's use in Vista from the Millenia support team?

Keith,

Did you download 118 OK? 117 Downloaded OK, 118 is the problem. I couldn't
download from within Legacy or from the website. I'm in a pickle. I'm
teaching Legacy for 3 hour tomorrow morning at our Computer Club. I have
117 on my computer and 110 on the laptop that I will use for the
demonstration. I would like to download the laptop to 117 but it doesn't
seem to be available. My husband and I have an ulcer between us trying to
get everything together for tomorrow.

I hope this problem is fixed soon! I may be up all night as it is. Our
Christmas Musical is at church tonight and we're singing.

By the way, I love the new coloring for the pedigree chart and the numbering
is fixed on the Publishing center...which is what I was waiting on.

La Nell

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Download of v6.0.0.118 - server problems

I think there is a good chance this is just due to the volume of people
hitting the server at the same time. I'm in UK and downloaded early the
morning of the 7th and the speed was more than acceptable.

I have tried to download the latest version of Legacy, v6.0.0.118, 6 Dec 06

with the server.

I have cable and other sites are downloading at dial up speeds.

Can you please check your Legacy download server??

RE: [LegacyUG] New TreeDraw V3?

2006-11-29 Thread Keith Bage
Dermot,

Your correct, that is not what was meant.

The point I was trying to make (without causing offense) is that the
majority of people now have broadband (or at least the possibility to have
it) and as such functionality should not be compromised by size. Of course
as part of this I think that Millenium have to look at other possibilities
of supplying upgrades etc.

I don't see why each time an upgade is made available we have to download
the WHOLE thing, surely only a part of the program has changed.

Keith,

Are you saying that I made the "choice" to live in an area where broadband
is not available, and that if I want broadband, I should move house
(again!!!)? I'm sure that's not what you meant. ;-)

2006-11-28 Thread Keith Bage
In my opinion no functionality should be compromised by the worry of the
download size. In these days of broadband connections these downloads take
little time. Now I know some will say they are on dialup and it takes an age
to download but I believe that is a "choice" those people have made. It's
like saying Windows should never have never been improved beyond Windows 95
because "my PC" doesn't have enough memory or hard drive space.

The charting functionality as shown in Genbox and other packages is really a
"basic" requirement to many of us. It is the one feature that constantly
makes me question if Legacy is the right tool for me. I love Legacy for all
it's features, but put plainly, it is right at the back of the que when we
talking about charting, compared to all other packages. Charting companion &
Tree Draw simply do not cut it, and are an added expense which no other
package would make you pay for.

Legacy has an add-on in Tree Draw. I, as one person, do not want a charting

Thanks, Keith, for your comments. Although the Danish language edition has
been available for a couple of months now, we've never "officially"
announced its release. Such was the purpose of the email earlier.

We are working, like you mentioned, on marketing a UK edition of Legacy. We
don't know all the details yet, but don't worry, you won't be penalized

I'm a little confused by this release. I was under the impression that the
Danish already had access to Legacy (translated) but maybe I was wrong.
However I know that work is underway for a UK version of Legacy. How will
these versions differ to the current Legacy and how will it be
marketed/priced.

I guess what I'm getting at is:

A: What will be the differences in "local" versions
B: Will these just be a switchable "option" for deluxe users
C: Will deluxe users be able to switch to a local version free of charge

While I applaud raising Legacy's profile in countries such as the UK, I
don't think current UK deluxe users should be penalised for getting on board
early and supporting Millenia. I hope that's not the case.

Arnold,

How are you pushing your data to the internet? You can export to a gedcom
and in the export dialogue box, click the Customise button. This will lead
you to a section where you can exclude certain information. Notes are among
the things which can be excluded.

Years ago when I was new to genealogy, and long before Legacy
entered my life, I was careless about my Notes. Some said too much, some
were dumb, and only some were set to private.
Now I want to put all that I have on the Internet to be seen by all
interested family members. To my horror, far too many "problematic"
Notes have appeared. As I have 3,400+ individuals in my database, there is
no way for me to hunt down Notes one by one within my lifetime.
Is there a way for Legacy to make *all* Notes private with just a
few keystrokes?
I checked the Help file but found nothing on this topic.
Thank you.

Carolyn,

Legacy doesn't provide a drop down descendent report like
the one you showed in Family Historian 3 without the use of an addon called
Treedraw. However i'd advise that you look closer than this since i think Legacy
holds many other features over Family Historian.

RE: [LegacyUG] Re: Cleaning up imports (was Obituaries)

2006-09-21 Thread Keith Bage
Jeff,

Not sure what you mean by multi source links? You do know you can have (and
apply) 5 sources at once using the source clipboard. I find the source
clipboard to be very useful and very powerful. You can also save these
clipboards. I just wish you could save and load far more than 10 .

There are a team of beta testers and you can request to be a beta tester but
I was told they have enough and don't need anymore.

They also do have a list of wants and features that they are working on but
for understandable reasons they do not want to disclose this info.

Tell me about it! I am still cleaning out and correcting the gedcom data I
imported into Legacy. I decided the only way to be sure is to go through
each person in detail and check the information. Very time consuming but
necessary to avoid major surprises.

Good thing about it is that you get to review all your entered data and
incidentally discover interesting pieces of information you entered years
ago when you were new at this and that you can now dig much deeper into or
correct. But if you have a huge family tree, it could take for ever.

I started with the master source and the location lists, which needed a lot
of work, and went on from there. I also tried importing into TMG and my
experience was that despite TMG's advertising, Legacy did a much more
accurate job of importing the information than TMG which made some terrible
errors using its default settings. Go figure.

I wish Legacy would implement some minor changes (add events on the Family
screen, more structured source entry and multi source links, etc.) which
with little effort would really make it so much more powerful without
diminishing its useability.

Does anyone know if there is a list of what changes and improvements the
Legacy authors are "working on" (wish list) and if they have a beta testing
team for experienced genealogists?

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy and TMG

2006-09-18 Thread Keith Bage
Jeff,

Comparing software is always difficult since different people place greater
emphasis on different aspects of the program. Both TMG & Legacy are pretty
highly thought of especially in the US. I am in the UK and find that Legacy
users are more limited here. It seems that the more casual genealogist will
in fact go for FTM or Roots Magic, both of which have a more gimmicky
appeal.

I am far from being an expert in TMG but have a copy and have compared it to
some extent. So I will give some differences in my opinion.

User interface.

TMG follows a philosophy of carrying different elements of data in different
windows. This makes the user interface more customisable in that the layout
of these windows can be saved for different purposes and configurations. An
example of the data windows would be the details screen showing all events
for a person along a timeline, children appear in a separate window as do
siblings, photograph etc. This makes for a flexible but in my opinion a
complex, cluttered and uninspired interface. In contrast the legacy user
interface is, easy to navigate, clear and concise, yet extremely
informative. The navigation is extremely simple and there are a good deal of
options also, whilst not being able to move data windows around the screen
as you can in TMG. This is really a personal choice. I much prefer the
Legacy approach. TMG data just doesn't stand out for me.

Legacy has more views of data than TMG, there is a family, pedigree,
descendant, chronology and index view. In TMG you get only what it calls
person, family and tree views.

Features.

There is some good common ground across features which both packages cover,
i.e. event sentence structuring, DNA, timelines, focus groups etc. TMG seems
to have one feature that everyone craves which it calls witnesses. In
contrast Legacy has many features not in TMG and some of these will not be
found in any other package. These include research guidance, a Legacy home
area where you manage your upgrades, to do lists, birthday reminders and
there are news articles published by Legacy. There is the ability to create
web pages and to publish a CD of your data. Legacy also has many cool
features like drag and drop, to move people from one database to another.

Reports.

This is a tough one. This is where I find Legacy actually does fall short
mainly due to the lack of a good integrated drop chart report. There are
many good reports in legacy, such as the descendent narrative reports but
the lack of the drop chart is a big issue for me. I find I usually export
such trees into another program. Legacy does integrate well with an add on
program called Treedraw, but this is extra money and still not as good as
other drop reports in my opinion.

Legacy staff take note this is THE big issue in Legacy.

TMG has a great drop report and many other useful reports too.

Add-ons.

Legacy has the possibility to work with many add-ons as does TMG. You should
look at what you would like to use and see if these are available for either
product. I almost moved over to TMG simply because it has an add on called
second site, which creates websites from TMG data, and they are wonderful.
If only they would produce a Legacy version of this.

There's really so much to say about both products. You really MUST get the
demo versions of both and try for yourself.

One final word. TMG in my opinion is amateurish in it's look and feel. I
have no idea what there support is like. However Legacy has a great support
ethos and the user group is excellent. Legacy is updated regularly for free
(you only pay for major upgrades) some times too much so for some users.

I would not hesitate in recommending Legacy and in fact I do so regularly.
It's not without it's short comings, but I've found that all of the packages
fall short in some area. The perfect one doesn't yet exist yet. If Legacy
had better drop charts it would be almost there.

Hope this helps.

In recommending genealogy software, Legacy and The Master Genealogist seem
to often come up together.

1. How do they compare?
2. What features does one have that the other does not?
3. Has anyone used both?

2006-09-15 Thread Keith Bage
Personally I just use the census event for all people in the house. My event
definition looks like this

[FirstHeShe] appeared on the census of [Date] at [Address], [Place], listed
as the [-Desc]. [CR][CR][Notes]

This would transcibe into something like

Robert appeared on the census of 3 Apr 1881 at 83 Hunter St, Middlesbrough,
Yorkshire, England, UK listed as the son of John and Mary age 18, a labourer
in the iron works.

So you can see I use the description field to show the relationship, age and
occupation. In the notes I would enter a full transcript of the census but
always surround this with [[ ]] to make it private. I can choose to print
the private comments if I wish.

Just my tuppence worth.

An alternative to using the description field to see if the person is the
head of household is to create a new event like CENSUS - HOH and use that
for the HOH and the other CENSUS event for non-HOH individuals. That way
you would be free to use the description field for any person.
Just a thought.

have a relevant event or directly in the Master Location List so they're
sitting there ready for use.The Geo Database is a possible aid

Thanks Cathy, I thought this was the case. I would like to be able to
produce a map showing the placing of the families and Legacy could have been a
good way to do it. It looks as though I will need to use Google Earth instead.
Pity.

I have added several, mostly so I could make the sentence structure fit the
source.

For instance "Land" - this could be bought sold, inherited in addition to
owned, so I added:
Land - bought
[HeShe] bought land [Desc] [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes] Land -
inherited
[HeShe] inherited land [Desc] [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes] Land
- sold
[HeShe] sold land [Desc] [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes]
 sample:
Christian Hurlocker sold land to Daniel Walker consisting of a 4 acre corner
lot located at the intersection of Fayetteville Road and Charleston Road on
21 Jan 1832 in Mount Pleasant, Cabarrus County, North Carolina. Charleston
Road was the main supply route from Salisbury to the port of Charleston. It
is now called North Main Street.

Another is "Military". I have added:
Military - battle
[HeShe] was in a military war battle [Desc] [onDate]
[inPlace].[Sources] [Notes]
Desc could be "during the US Civil War" or "in which he was
killed"
   sample:
John Howard was in a military battle which lasted From 19 Sep 1863 to 20 Sep
1863 in Chickamauga, Walker County, Georgia. This last major battle in the
summer of 1863 happened along a small northern creek called Chicamauga.
General Braxton Bragg's forces attacked the Union army headed by General
Rosecrans on September 19, 1863. During the two days of bitter fighting,
there were 35,000 casualties. The confederate troops routed the federal
troops on the second day, causing President Lincoln to say that Rosecrans
was "confused and stunned, like a duck hit on the head." Family history has
it that John was shot in the chin during this battle.

Military - prisoner of war
Military - wounded
and
Military draft registration (now that ancestry.com has these records
easily accessible for the US).
I added most of these so I could show the different locations the person
could be found, and so I could find all people who fought in the same
battles, or were in the same prison camps, etc.

the birth / death should be reworded to "Birth Registration Witness" and

[LegacyUG] Event Definition & Timeline Sharing

2006-08-12 Thread Keith Bage

Bert's e-mail regarding the [FromDate] code has reminded me about a question
I wanted to ask. I have seen some instances of TMG users sharing event
definitions and wondered, does anyone have any Legacy ones to share?

I assume that many people will have created new events and/or changed
existing ones. It would be great to see how people are putting these to use.
Anyone care to share?

Also it seemed to me that with the release of V6 we would start to see an
influx of Timelines created by each other, but this doesn't seem to be the
case and may be an under used function. Does anyone have any timelines to
share?

Personally I have created only one, which may be of limitied use to others,
it is a timeline of the town Middlesbrough in England. Middlesbrough is a
relatively young town which developed quickly due to heavy industry. Of
course if anyone has any relatives in this town it could be useful. Please
let me know if you'd like a copy of it.

RE: [LegacyUG] Cremation on Legacy 6 Standard

2006-07-23 Thread Keith Bage
Gene,

Your comment regarding the UK is not quite true. Cremation may very well be
the most popular these days, BUT burial is definitely NOT just for the rich.
My sister recently buried her husband who died suddenly, and she is of a
VERY modest income.

You may find that the programmers are greatly resricted by the Gedcom format
as to how they handle this. It's alsways a payoff between the features in
Legacy and the ability to export to gedcom.

I would think if the programmers would take a look around at the ever
changing world and see that in countries such as the UK, cremation is the
norm and true burial as we in the U.S. know it is saved for the (I hate to
say rich) but is not in the everyday scheme of things, then they would
surely see where it is a very much needed alternative.

2006-07-05 Thread Keith Bage
Look at advanced sourcing under the tools menu. This allows you to mass
assign sources to tagged individuals. You can set a tag for everyone in your
database first and use that tag.

If I want everyone, everything, all individuals, all marriages, all events,
ALL everything, etc., to have the same source, is it possible to assign the
source after all individuals have been added? Sure would beat doing it one
at a time if I could.

Thanks.

[LegacyUG] Legacy Windows corrupt

2006-07-01 Thread Keith Bage
My Legacy windows are not appearing correctly, buttons and other objects
appear partly off the window (out of reach), this is mainly where they would
be near the edge of the window. No matter how I try and resize the window
they still appear off screen or correct.

A possible cause of this is I have recently changed my monitor configuration
from a 21" monitor running at abt 1600 x 1400 (or similar I think) to a dual
monitor system running at the lower res of 1280 x 1040. It doesn't matter if
I'm looking at legacy on one maonitor or across two this problem still
occurs.

RE: [LegacyUG] EDITING LOCATIONS, tagging, etc.

2006-06-18 Thread Keith Bage
Patricia,

You can do this using tags in the name list. When you edit a person, set a
tag to say you've edited that person. Then using the "search" button in the
name list, select "show all untagged" for the tag number you set.

That's actually what I'm currently doing too, but it just seemed silly that

Thanks for the link to your sources, very interesting.

2. Robert Bage (Twaynes English Author series)

Hi Keith
I'd just like to do a little sanity check and ask, what do
you do withalternative dates in Legacy. Let me explain.Lets say two
different sources show a conflicting birth date. I can notconfirm which is
correct.  It can be stored in 'events' and saved as alt birth.
Lots of room there for details of where you found the information so you will
easily be able to find it in future. Just go to 'events' when you're in that
persons record, click on 'add' on the right side of the screen and type in the
details.

[LegacyUG] Alternative dates

2006-06-18 Thread Keith Bage
I'd just like to do a little sanity check and ask, what do you do with
alternative dates in Legacy. Let me explain.

Lets say two different sources show a conflicting birth date. I can not
confirm which is correct. Do I store one or other in the "born" field? And
what do I do with the other date. Currently I enter the alternative date in
the birth notes. BUT I also store other information in there and It gets
messy when I start adding lots of sources to ALL my birth notes.

Am I missing a trick? How do others store alternative dates/information.
