Cathy, thank you for your help on this...the link below is good but one
thing.when thes describe "family view" in customizing, they should write to
click on CUSTOMIZE and then VIEW and then that is where the options are,
including FS IDI wasn't clicking on View.

I'm all set now..thanks again!

Barbara,
If you want the FS ID on FamilyView then you need to customise the labels.
Here's how:
<https://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2019/12/tuesdays-tip-customize-the-family-view-beginner.html>
I have several sets of labels for FV depending on what I'm doing. I usually
combine birth and baptism on one line and death and burial on one line.
Another way of finding these people is to open Legacy FamilySearch and look for
the Red links. You can filter by Red links Here's how they work:
<https://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2020/01/familysearch-filter.html>
Also make sure the FS arrows are working for you. Then a red arrow indicates a
change. You can turn them all green in Legacy FamilySearch module using the
Update Matches button OR individually by clicking the I have finished sharing
button. You can click this whether you've shared anything or not.

Sometimes when a person is deleted from FS the ID doesn’t match up with the one

Thank you Cathy. I got the split screen and I knew it was a drag-and-drop but
it didn't work for me. But I could take the head person and drag it over and
start a brand-new family with it. I couldn't cover up the same file on the
other side. Anyway I found a way to work it but I'll try to again how you
described it. I always appreciate your help

You are using Split Screen View? You drag and drop one of the family to the
other file. After you drop you get a dialogue box that asks whether you just
want to copy that person or their family or branch etc. If you don't get the
dialogue drag and drop again but drop to a different part of the screen.

Cindy,
Here are the Support articles on your errors.

http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00261/11/Error-Messages-Problems/Error-503-Backup-problem.html

http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00271/11/Error-Messages-Problems/Error-508-Cannot-move-temporary-file-to-target-zip-file.html

It's a bit strange to get either of these if you are backing up to your
computer hard drive as you indicate.
The default location for backups is ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\
folder but that's because it's a folder Legacy created so knows about. You
should backup to an external drive or to a folder that syncs to the cloud -
like a Dropbox folder or Google Drive or OneDrive.

To use the backup data zip, you don't unzip it yourself. You use File > Restore
File in Legacy and it does the unzipping as part of the process.

Re: [LegacyUG] Problems with Backup

2021-08-18 Thread Barbara Lewis
Cathy, thank you so much for teaching me that which I used to know but have
forgotten. Years ago a person I will say was my mentor in all this taught me
about the "Save As" and that is what I have done ever since and it has worked
for me, by simply renaming my file with the same name and adding the current
date. I have about 8 different Legacy files and this has worked, but I
understand what you are saying. Now I can't fix this file with the error,
and it is too large to send to support, as they have offered to fix it for me
if I can do that.

Support also sent me a link to an online program to use to send large files,
but I am in my 80s and have a struggle with reading all that I would have to do
to understand to proceed, like an "old dog" who doesn't want to learn new
tricks.

Thank you again for taking the time to teach me the right way. I think I will
take one of my smaller files to go back and relearn how to back up and in the
meantime, I will not use the file that doesn't work and go back to the same
file that I used at an earlier day. I may have lost recent information that I
put into the recent one, but I think that's OK this time.

Cindy,
You can't expect the Restore a backup feature to work when you don't use the
Backup feature.

What file are you saving to your external drives and how? If you are
overwriting your previous saved file on those drives, then you only have one
generation of a type of backup. You should have at least 10 of your data
backups though many of us keep some going back months and years.

If you are only copying over the .fdb, it's not a full
backup of your family file which is made up of a number of different files -
though it will have all the data.

Use the backup process. File > Backup File OR Backup on exit at least for your
data. I don't use the Legacy Media Backup routine as I back that up with the
rest of my computer data. Also I keep it in Dropbox so there's already a copy
off my computer as well as on it in the Dropbox folder.

[LegacyUG] Restoring from a back up

2021-08-17 Thread Barbara Lewis

I have a file that brings up “Error” I wrote to support and they told me to
restore it from a backup. Would you believe I’ve been in the program for 15
years and always so a “save as” creating a new file and haven’t done a
“restore” in years. Don’t remember how. Can anyone help me? Is a backup just
another copy of the same file? That’s how dumb I feel right now, and I use this
file everyday?

I do not think there is a way to change the font size in the Legacy Family
Search (LFS) window. I looked for a font size setting in the Options without
success and when I tried to change the size of the LFS window the text on the
screen stayed the same size no matter how small or how large I made the window.

If you have Windows 10 it has a "Magnifier" included in its features for those
with vision problems. The item can be found in the "Ease of Access" section in
Windows settings. When activated the Magnifier creates an area of your screen
which magnifies everything behind it, much like looking through a magnifying
glass.

You mention that you have many files but the display of LDS data is a
Family file Specific option. Go to Options > Customize > General and
make sure that the 1.9 display of LDS data is turned on in the file
where they are not showing.

Also, as Cathy pointed out, you need to update to the latest build
9.0.0.332 because of changes made by FamilySearch to the way Legacy
interfaces with the FamilySearch website.

[LegacyUG] siblings become spouses when printing a family group sheet

2019-01-09 Thread Barbara Schwarting via LegacyUserGroup
I have not seen this problem in the past. When I print a family group
sheet for a family the 2nd, 4th and 6th children become the spouses of
the 1st, 3rd and 5th children.  Can someone help me - I would surely
appreciate it.

1.  Siblings are clearly listed as children of a husband and wife on a
family group sheet.

2. When I press "print" and then  "preview" the 2nd, 4th and 6th
children show as spouses.

3. If I go back and attempt to make a change in the original record - I
receive a message "that they are children of their parents.

Thus, it seems that it is something between the input and the printer.

Re: [LegacyUG] Procedure for installing and using OneDrive to backup my Legacy media files?

2017-09-30 Thread Barbara
Thank you so much for the detailed instructions! I have followed them, and now
have my backups in OneDrive.

Sent: Saturday, September 30, 2017 6:15 PM

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Procedure for installing and using OneDrive to backup
my Legacy media files?

Here is an answer to basic backup.

1. In Legacy, go to File >Backup File

2. At bottom right, Click HELP >Show Help Topic. or watch a video.

This HELP completely talks about backups and the Legacy Cloud backup in 5 steps.

OneDrive Backup

1. In Legacy, go to File >Backup File

2. Select Backup to My Computer (Family File & Media Files)

3. Click CHANGE to far right of Family File

4. A windows file manger will open and you can then locate your OneDrive folder
(e.g: \OneDrive\Legacy Backups\ ) and save the Legacy Backupup files in that
folder. If you also have the Media Files selected for backup, Legacy asks if
you want to change the Media backup location to the same as Family File and the
answer would be YES. Note: I would suggest you create the \OneDrive\Legacy
Backups\ folder before starting steps 1-4 above - see step 3 below.

Questions about OneDrive:

1. Do I have OneDrive on my system?

 A. Yes, If you have Windows 8.1 or 10, it was automatically installed

 B. Yes, if you have Office 360 installed

2. How can I see if OneDrive is installed?

 A. You can use the Windows File manager (the yellow folder icon at bottom
in task bar) - Click on it, you should see in the left side window a folder
called OneDrive and maybe a few subfolders if you have created any.

3. How do I create a new subfolder under OneDrive called: \OneDrive\Legacy
Backups\ ?

 A. You can use the Windows File manager (the yellow folder icon at bottom
in task bar) - Click on it, you should see in the left side window a folder
called OneDrive

 B. Right Click on OneDrive >New >Folder

 C. Type the new folder name as: Legacy Backup

 D. Hit return. You should see the new folder under OneDrive in your
screen on left side.

4. What if I don't have a OneDrive Subfolder or OneDrive is not installed?

 A. You will need to download OneDrive from Microsoft and create an
account.

 B. Here is the link to do that:

https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-gb/support/

Enjoy!

So let me rephrase:

Can you and if so how do you:

1. Backup your legacy files so that all the media files are included.

2. How would you restore that backup from onedrive instead of from the legacy
cloud and is this possible?

But everyone has Windows – any version has the free gift from Microsoft of
OneDrive – which is a more than adequate amount of cloud storage.

While it does require a step-by-step ‘recipe’ for users to set the Legacy FT
backup location to other than the defaults, over the past year I have seen
instructions here on how to change to the location of choice for any
individual. That has included Dropbox (another ‘cloud’ location).

Yes, when FamilySearch have finished their current set of changes, Legacy
FamilySearch will be updated again in both Legacy 8 and 9 and it will come
back. Currently I understand you are being directed to the FamilySearch
website. That will likely be the last update for it in Legacy 8.

Legacy puts a high priority on keeping the Legacy FamilySearch module working
as well as possible. FamilySearch keep changing things which makes that
difficult. Occasionally they give warning but not always.

[LegacyUG] Windows 10 and Legacy 6

This is giving me grief as I'm currently trying to sync my tree with family

I keep on checking for a new build and am getting more and more frustrated.

Are you talking about the new Legacy 9 feature in Report Options - Clipboard -

Yes it works in Windows 10.

However there are some known bugs for some reports.

Put in a bug report if you find bugs as they may not all be logged.

Barb,

If you rely on this module, you would have had to change to Legacy 9 soon
anyway. These updates are being done to the Legacy FamilySearch module in
Legacy 8 and 9 but no other changes are being made to Legacy 8 and we - Testers
and Support - weren't expecting Legacy FamilySearch in 8 to be updated again. I
understand that it's only because Legacy 9 hasn't been out long that the update
has been done in both this time.
Legacy FamilySearch in 8 will stop working and not be updated just as it did
for Legacy 7.5.

When FamilySearch change things that break the connection, other programs have
to respond. Sometimes they give warning and most times they don't. Also it's
not always easy to foresee what will be broken by a change.

Yes, that redirect is due to the changes that are happening at FamilySearch.

"Legacy FamilySearch Module" I think that is where you are missing the Temple
tab? the Title bar of the screen is Legacy FamilySearch.
I call it a module as once opened you can use Legacy at the same time as that
screen.

Note it's not the update to Legacy 9 that has done this. It's exactly the same
at the moment in Legacy 8.

Barbara
If it relates to Legacy and FamilySearch you can ask it here.

If you are using Legacy FamilySearch module, make sure you have
updated to the latest version of Legacy 8 (8.0.0.604) or Legacy 9
(9.0.0.189).

FamilySearch are currently making changes and there have been two
emergency updates and there will be another when things settle down
again at FamilySearch.

This may not relate to your questions.

Re: [LegacyUG] FS question

2017-06-25 Thread Barbara Lewis
Cathy, thank you for your response. I have the recent 9 version but what is the
FamilySearch module? I am missing the Temple tab that keeps track or
ordinances that I had in 8. Now the Temple tab just takes us back into the
Temple tab in FamilySearch. Does anyone know if they are planning to bring
that back?

I haven't been on a user list in years..is there a separate user group list
for Familysearch questions, or can I ask it here?

Okay, got it. I think I may at least try keeping 6, if it will work on Windows

later version allow embedded photos) have been answered in such a way that I

Re: [LegacyUG] Big Question

2017-02-03 Thread Barbara Ford
Now that makes perfect sense. I'm flagging this note to perhaps save me some
pain when I do a new install into Windows 10.

Agree about the admin thing--I currently cannot get rid of a folder (a Western
Digital folder) I do not want on an external hard drive, because it says I
don't have administrative privileges. Enfuriating.

Thanks,
Barb

Re: [LegacyUG] Big Question

2017-02-02 Thread Barbara Ford
Brian, then if I kept both, would they access the data from the same data file,
or does Legacy 8 put its data in a different location, and does it save it "on
the fly" like Legacy 6? My Legacy 6 data is all in a folder named Legacy that
resides directly on the C hard drive. I don't have a real reason for wanting
NOT to use Legacy 6, except that I fear it would not work well with Windows 10.
Am I right on that?

Hope I'm not "hearing" that I can't get there from here. In other words, is it
possible to go from Legacy 6 Deluxe to Legacy 8, keeping all my data intact?
I'm not so worried about learning some of the nuances of the "new" version,
just wanting to know that I do everything in such a way that I keep all my data
and have a clear understanding of where everything is stored and how everything
is backed up.

[LegacyUG] Big Question

2017-02-02 Thread Barbara Ford
Okay, I'm nervous about asking this, because the answer is sort of a big deal
in my world! Seriously, please don't judge me, but I have to confess that I am
still running Legacy 6 Deluxe (on Windows 7 Professional). That's right, I have
not updated in all this time. It took me a long time to get comfortable with
how Legacy works, and I simply didn't want to rock the boat, since it was
working for me.

However, I am now trying to get all my ducks in a row for the possibility of a
new laptop, and I'm fairly certain I will want/need the latest version of
Legacy when I do that. So, I'm thinking I should go ahead now and update Legacy
while I still have an operating system I understand, so that once I am forced
to go to Windows 10 (by virtue of buying a new laptop), at least I'll already
be comfortable with the Legacy 8 software. I believe I have read that Legacy 8
does work with Windows 7 (and I'm sure it is compatible with Windows 10 as
well).

Bottom line question here: to avoid the group involvement in all my questions
about this process, etc., is there someone who would be willing to answer my
questions/walk me through some of this outside the group?

I have a few questions that I need to understand before I actually try the
update.

Thank you,
Barb Ford

Re: [LegacyUG] Exporting to Gedcom

2017-02-02 Thread Barbara Ford
Further on this, Ian, yes, I absolutely love the PDF report creation feature of
Legacy, and I use it a lot, saving anew anytime I have made major updates in
the software. This would work great for anyone wanting to see the data. Was
thinking more along the lines of someone in my family who might want to
continue the work, in which case the software is the key issue. The point about
running Legacy on a MAC is a good idea.

Re: [LegacyUG] Exporting to Gedcom

2017-02-01 Thread Barbara Ford
Thanks, John, right, what I meant was that if everyone had Windows I could
probably talk them into using Legacy and I wouldn't worry so much about data
export/import via gedcom. Does that make sense. But you make a good suggestion
here.

Re: [LegacyUG] Exporting to Gedcom

2017-02-01 Thread Barbara Ford
Good ideas, John. I'm such a worry wart. My fear is that some of the details,
like sources, notes, etc., won't export/import properly and will be lost, and
that it won't be obvious that "things" are missing when I do the trial(s).

I wish Legacy had a version for MAC. Any such possibility in the future? I'll
always be Windows, but more and more of my family are MAC users, so I worry
about the Legacy data being all intact for them.

Thanks,
Barb

Thank you, Cathy. That did work--that is, it now says the right thing! So,
that's good. But I do notice that that name is not bolded (the individuals in

Maybe that will self-correct later? It shows him as the correct grandfather,

[LegacyUG] Linking comes in as wrong relationship

2017-01-21 Thread Barbara Ford
This is me, pulling my hair out. In order to insert a generation where I had
skipped one, I have just unlinked a line and then linked as needed. I hesitate
to get any more detailed than that, unless it's needed to troubleshoot. Bottom
line, everyone is where they need to be in line, except that the person I have
re-linked shows as my 5th Great-Granduncle instead of my 5th Great-Grandfather
as it should be. I linked him as the son of my 6th Great-Grandfather (and that
person is correct). The 5th Great-Granduncle as it now shows him, is now
showing as the father of my 4th Great Grandfather. In other words, the one
above him is correct, and the one below him is correct (6th and 4th Great
Grandfathers), but he (the problem child) is showing as my 5th Great Granduncle
(instead of 5th Great Grandfather).

This is a mess. Please ask me questions to make sense of this, if you think you
might be able to help.

[LegacyUG] Subscribing

2017-01-12 Thread Barbara Ford
Can someone tell me if I have done something wrong, in attempting to subscribe
to this list. I received a message at the top of the screen on the web site
where I subscribed that says the email address has been subscribed to the
LegacyUserGroup and I should receive an email message with details. However,
the next line says "Error Sending: Transport Layer Security Error #30 (SMTP):
554 Message rejected: Email address is not verified. The following identities
failed the check in region US-East-1 and then lists my mail address." The
screen where I subscribed says Legacy User Group-Mailing List.

I have tried with two different email addresses and get the same message on
both (multiple tries).

What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,

Have you tried the Legacy Charting rather than the Pedigree.

You have a lot more options at to what goes in the boxes, fonts, etc.

The Icon for this should be in the My Toolbar tab to right of Internet called
Legacy Charting.

so small I can hardly see it. I don't care I need an extra page. Can someone
point out where I go to change the text size on reports?

Re: [LegacyUG] Relation who can't be correctly linked.

2016-06-07 Thread Barbara Shroyer
I don't link when neither parent is known. I created a Link event to use in
this type of situation, but use this event very sparingly. "William Thomas
Bloor may have been a grandson of and __." I'd then also have Link
event for the grandparents reading " and may have been the
grandparents of William Thomas Bloor." The link can be easily seen without
attaching the individual. This works for both known non-parent
relationships and probable relationships.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Relation who can't be correctly linked.

I have a relation, William Thomas Bloor, known to my grandmother as "Uncle
Tom" who has always been something of a mystery. I've never been able to
find anything about his birth or baptism. On his Marriage Cert his father's
name is given as William Macallister Bloor, but I am sure he was
illegitimate and the surname Bloor should not be tacked on.
(Similarly, his wife was illegitimate and her father's name as her own
surname tacked on, incorrectly.) Then I found a report of my 2nd Great
Grandfather's funeral in which he was described as a nephew.

If he was illegitimate and was a nephew of my GG Grandfather there were
4 daughters who might possibly have been his mother. Of 3 of them I know
nothing other than their names and dates of baptism, the 4th was just old
enough (about 16) to have been Uncle Tom's mother 4 years or so before she
married.

How would other users link Uncle Tom to the rest of the family so that his
correct relationship shows up? Would you link him to one of the 4 sisters
with a note that the relationship is totally unproven? Link him to all 4
with the relationships all unproven? Add a new unknown sibling as the
parent of Uncle Tom?

Re: [LegacyUG] Where on my computer should my Legacy program .(exe etc.) be located?

2016-03-19 Thread Barbara T
Hi Martha
No real reason not to upgrade to 8 but when I (admittedly quickly) looked at what it would do over 7.5 they seemed to be things I wasn't interested in like interface with family search.org, putting your tree up on Ancestry were 2 I remember.  I find for my purposes that there are way too many options already in 7.5 De Luxe.  The only bug I have with this version is that when the system is searching for a misplaced media file it almost always stops part way through the search but it does  usually finish in the end so not such a big deal. I could be convinced to upgrade to 8 but my thoughts at the moment are "better the devil you know".

[LegacyUG] Duplicates/Loop

2016-02-10 Thread Barbara Ford
When I do an ancestor report, I am getting several duplicates, and some
multiple duplicates of the same person. I understand one situation, where
brother and sister are both in my direct line of ancestors. But, the rest
of the occurrences, I don't know where to start to figure out what I have
done wrong. The individuals that are showing up again as duplicates are
only showing up once in my Name List. I realize this is not descriptive
enough to get help, but I'm hoping that someone will ask me specific
questions that will help clarify. I have no clue what is causing this.

Brian, I used the tool to set relationships (it's actually my husband's

right click on. I am looking on the Family screen; should I be somewhere

Okay, I went to the "loop" that I know is right, and even there, there is
no + sign next to the relationship, above the name. Is it possible that it
is because I am using Legacy 6.0? Also, I fear it is more involved than
just multiple relationships...there are several cases, and they are being
processed multiple times, in some cases over 10 times.

Re: [LegacyUG] Duplicates/Loop

2016-02-10 Thread Barbara Ford
Okay, thank you. I have used the Relationship Calculator many times in 6.0, but
never thought to use it to research a looping problem.

I was new to Legacy when the first update came after 6.0. Some of the technical
"talk" on the user group scared me off--I was barely understanding 6.0, without
trying to think about "new" things and potential bugs. Then when I updated my
computer to Windows 7, I had much, much difficulty getting my Legacy 6.0 to
run. Once it was up and running successfully, I have been afraid to update
Legacy. Now, I'm dreading Windows 10. So, I see the handwriting on the wall
that I am going to have to update Legacy so that I can eventually succumb to
the forced use of Windows 10. Going from Legacy 6.0, as a non-technical person,
to the latest version of Legacy, am I going to have a nightmare? Will it work
well with Windows 7? And am I right that I should do that first (updating
Legacy) BEFORE I eventually go to Windows 10?

One question already: in 6.0, all the data is stored in the Legacy folder,
which on my computer resides directly on C:\. Is that also where the data is
stored (default) on 8? If I wanted to go cold turkey from 6 to 8, do I download
8 from the website, or do I have to buy it? Once installed, can I open my
family file from the Legacy folder on C:\ and then go from there in the same
way as I have used 6?

Your explanation is helping me "get there" in my understanding. Here is the way
I described the "two ways to access" in an earlier post here:

The one I refer to as having gotten there without my knowledge is not a
shortcut. And I do believe it got there as you describe here.

Through the years, I always opened Legacy by clicking on my desktop shortcut
(what I call the Legacy Icon) to the program. I have opened it many times
through the time I wasn't doing active research, to reference something mainly,
and within the last three years to add the death information about three of our
parents. It always saved on the fly, as I exited, and I additionally chose to
Backup as I exited, when given the choice, and that's when I back up to a zip
file, stored in My Documents, but I have never used any of those zip files. It
always opened up with everything having been saved, until I apparently
inadvertently opened it from that "stray" copy of the file.

Once I get the right one open (which I expect will be correct except for my FIL
death information, which I can easily re-input), do I understand correctly that
I should double check to make sure the family file is being saved in
C:\Legacy\Data and then is it safe to delete that one I refer to as "stray"
(the one that says familytreewip.fdb)?

So, asking a simplistic basic question here, as I try to figure out how this
happened, and before I take my nervous self to the computer this morning to try
to "fix" this: Does it appear that I in effect have two installations of Legacy
on my computer (one that I access through the Legacy icon, the one I THOUGHT I
always used), and the other that somehow showed up as a link on my desktop that
I must have used to access the program at least once, like three days ago when
I input my FIL information). Because if it's just two ways to access the same
program, why wouldn't it save all the data, no matter which location I accessed
the program from?

Wow, that makes sense, also, Brian. Let me just say a huge thanks to all
who helped me on this. Although I am not certain which of the possible ways
the "stray" file got on my desktop, I have it all resolved now. Thankfully,
attempting to print a chart from Charting Companion yesterday made me aware
that there was even "such a thing" as more than one file. I am 99.9% (and
that's good enough for me) that the only time I opened that stray file was
when I input my FIL death info. Therefore, I went into Legacy and told it
to open the file from C:\Legacy\Data, and everything was there EXCEPT my
FIL death info. I made sure that C:\Legacy\Data is set as the default
location for my family file. With that file open, I re-input the FIL info.
I chose to backup to .zip, as I always do when exiting. I then deleted the
.zip files from the previous three days, and I deleted that evil stray
file, con mucho gusto. I am so glad I figured out what was happening before
I had two files that needed to be merged. To answer my own question at the
beginning of these many posts, what in the world made me think I could use
a robust software program like Legacy? It's only because there are
brilliant people out there (in this group) who are willing to hold the hand
of someone like myself. Thank you, all.

[LegacyUG] Help, please

2016-01-24 Thread Barbara Ford

I have been using Legacy for years, and although still using version 6.0,
because I haven't done any serious research work since I was using that
version, I thought I was very "on" to how the backups work. In my mind, there
is an "on the fly" backup that puts data in C:\Legacy\Data\familytreewip.fdb
(with familytreewip being the "name" of my data). Then when I exit the program,
when it prompts me to back up, I also do that, and that is a zip file that I
keep in my documents folder. In the last three years, while I have not been
actively involved in research, we have lost three of our parents, and I have
updated Legacy with all that information. Today I have discovered that the data
has been going to different places (do not understand how that could have
happened). I discovered it (and maybe this will help with troubleshooting) when
I tried to use Legacy Charting Companion and it wasn't bringing in the death
information from Legacy, just posted a couple of days ago. I have now figured
out that there is a familytreewip.fdb folder on my desktop. Some of the data I
have entered in the last three years is there (visible when I open Legacy from
that file), and when I go to C:\Legacy\Data\familytreewip.fdb, the most recent
data is NOT there (and therefore not coming in to Charting Companion). Once I
open Legacy from one location or the other, it opens it back up from there the
next time I open Legacy. So, now there is one "version" of Legacy that has
recent death information, and then the one out on C:\Legacy has data updated
two years ago. I do not know what to do, and right after the death of my
father-in-law is NOT a good time for me to realize something is wrong. Mainly,
I don't know how to bring it together, and I don't know how to tell where it is
actually going when I exit NOW. I do periodically copy the contents of
c:\Legacy\Data to an external hard drive, and I have done that fairly recently.
But even if I open the Legacy program from there, and discover that the only
thing I have to re-input is my father-in-law's death information, I'm so
confused now about where it all goes when I exit. I guess my main confusion is
why it is sometimes going to the desktop file (and why is it even there?) and
not to C:\Legacy. I am so sorry to be so unclear, but can anyone help me? I'm
not so concerned about the Charting Companion--that's just what helped me
discover that data is not going where I thought it was, when exiting.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help, please

2016-01-24 Thread Barbara Ford

Oh dear. I am even more confused. Even though I have been using computers since
the mid-80's and consider myself fairly tech savvy, sometimes I wonder what
made me think I could successfully use and understand a program so robust as
Legacy. I want to be very careful with what I do next, because I believe all my
data was intact and in the places where I expected it to be just prior to
entering the death information about my father-in-law a couple of days ago. So,
I think that maybe if I ask my questions one at a time, I will better be able
to understand what I need to do to move forward with a clear understanding (and
if I need to manually re-enter the info about my FIL, that's no big deal). So,
once I open the file that was up to date prior to the FIL data, THAT is the way
I would want to save it, going forward.

I'm not even sure if I am making sense. But, at the foundational level, I need
to know if what I have understood (and has worked for me) for years is correct
(for v 6):
I understood that Legacy saves data on the fly (while I am working and when I
exit), automatically. It was my understanding that data saves in c:\Legacy\Data
and that within that folder, the file is familytreewip.fdb. IN ADDITION to
that, and as an extra precaution, when I exit, I am asked if I want to backup.
I always understood that to be EXTRA backup--it is at that point that I name
the file and point it to My Documents folder, and I name it with the date; it
is a zip file. So, first I need to know if those two things are correct. (I
have made myself a note, years ago, that if I ever need to reinstall Legacy, it
would know to look on C:\Legacy for my data. That has always worked for me.)

Meanwhile, I do not know how or when, there is a link on my desktop that I
believe is basically a shortcut to my data, as when I right click on it, it
says familytreewip.fdb. (A few years ago, when I had trouble getting Legacy 6
to work with my new Windows 7, someone in this group helped meit may have
been in that process that the link got put on my desktop. I have never used it
to open Legacy--I have always used the software icon, to my knowledge.)

It almost seems to me like there are two ways to access Legacy on my laptop:
one, the Legacy 6.0 icon, which when hovering over, says, Location: Legacy
(C:\Legacy) and then there is this link that is there that I have never
knowingly used, that is labeled familytreewip.fdb but when hovering over says
Type: Legacy Genealogy Software, 12.7 MB, and has today's date as the date
modified (because I opened Legacy with that icon awhile ago when I realized it
was there).

While in Charting Companion, noticing that it was not using the most recent
data about my FIL, I saw a reference to two locations for the data, one being
my desktop.

So now, if I open Legacy by clicking on the desktop link, it does have the most
recent info about my FIL's death, but it does not have the information about my
mother's death, two years ago.

I do not want to merge data or do anything extreme, because I think all was
well until entering FIL's data a couple of days ago. So, I could open the file
from the C:\Legacy\Data location of the file, and then manually re-enter the
FIL data. BUT before I do that, I need to understand where my data is going
(how to I find the default location for my file), and I would then want to make
sure I never use that desktop link again.

I am so sorry that I cannot seem to express my question in a concise and
reasonable manner. I so appreciate everyone's efforts to help me, I just don't
like using something that I don't have at least a rudimentary grasp on how it
works, in terms of data safety. I thought I had it, but sure don't understand
what just happened!

If anyone is brave enough to jump into my confusion again, I do truly
appreciate it.
Barbara

Maybe I can simplify by asking this question: Where do I look (in Legacy) to
see where my data is going? I want it to go to C:\Legacy\Data. And then can I
safely delete that "stray" link on my desktop? I only want ONE way to access
Legacy.

2016-01-01 Thread Barbara Levergood
While not exactly what you are describing, TMG has the following
features. (A TMG tag is the equivalent of Legacy's Event/Fact.) Legacy
also has timelines.

"A history tag differs from a regular event tag in that there are no
principals. This Tag Type is designed for events of a global, rather
than personal, nature. A person is a Witness on a History tag, and the
tag is displayed on the Person View of the individual who witnessed the
historical event. [...] History tags help you to see where the person
fits into an historical context." TMG Help system, "Data Entry: History"

"A timeline is a separate database of historical events. The Timeline
feature can be turned on to provide an aid in interpreting the events of
a person's life against a historical background." TMG Help system,
"Timeline Manager"

[LegacyUG] RE: Are you trying to relate some of your early people and also duplicates? This is really more for a OneName Study.

2015-12-30 Thread Valerie Barbara Garton
To-day I worked out a way to help me. I use the program Legacy which has the
charting program. I searched for all the CULLODENs born before 1750 and in
my case were C/I. I put the religion in the suffix spot so I can then search
for all C/I's, similarly for R/C's. Yes I know that there were inter
marriages but this is the way to start.

I then gave all the C/I Cullodens born before 1750 the same made up father -
father of C/Is. I changed the requirements of information to be selected to
be printed on the chart to as many events and information as possible.
Before I printed out my chart I made the boxes as big as possible and then
the whole chart as big as I wanted it to be [a bit of a waste of paper but
anything that helps my mind is worth every penny.]

Having printed out my chart I then cut up the different people or family
groups and was able to move them around the table as I ascertained who could
belong to whom, what generation did they belong to and also see more easily
possible duplicates. It also meant that one could move them around to put
them in generations on the table.

All of this was great fun and very rewarding and I was soon able to see that
that odd one around must be this person's brother for example.

Cheers from Valerie Garton [nee Vaughan] in sunny Sydney

Re: [LegacyUG] And a US Census Area be considered a county?

2015-11-04 Thread Barbara Levergood
I am a glutton for the Census, so I cannot resist sharing the following gem
from the U.S. Census Bureau. I find that it answers many of my questions about
U.S. Census geography and thus about how I might enter a location.

Geographic Areas Reference Manual,
https://www.census.gov/geo/reference/garm.html.
For instance, reinforcing what Brian in CA found out, Chapter 4 tells us: "For
most States, counties are the primary administrative divisions. There are
exceptions, however; Louisiana has parishes, while Alaska has boroughs for the
organized portion of its territory. Because a large part of Alaska is not in
any organized borough, the State and the Census Bureau cooperatively have
subdivided the unorganized portion of Alaska into census areas for the purposes
of presenting statistical data."

I'm a glutton for punishment and this topic of a county name for Gustavus was
bothering me. So, I picked up the phone and called Gustavus City Hall. The
wonderful clerk there reminded me that Alaska does not have counties but rather
"boroughs" similar to Louisiana's "parishes". However, Alaska is still unique
in that not all of Alaska is organized into boroughs. Currently there are 19
organized boroughs and one legal entity called the "Unorganized borough". This
Unorganized Borough is administered by the state and still takes up the vast
majority of the land in Alaska. Gustavus resides in the Unorganized Borough.
Technically, you could enter "Unorganized borough" for the county name but that
would probably just confuse people other than Alaskans. The city clerk of
Gustavus says she normally leaves that blank on any paperwork that asks for a
county/borough name but when the form requires something to be entered, she
uses the name of the closest borough just to keep the paperwork happy.

This concludes today's lesson in Geography.

Subject: [LegacyUG] And a US Census Area be considered a county?

When I add a USA based location for birth, death or marriage events I usually
list the city, county, state and USA in the location field.
However my son married his wife in a small town in Alaska near Glacier Bay
National Park that does not belong to any county. The town, Gustavus is a part
of what is known as the "Hoonah-Angoon Census Area".

Of course when I enter that Legacy tells me no such county in Alaska exists.
Would it still be appropriate to enter that in the County field or should it
just be left blank?

Just my tuppence worth on this. This positive comment is good to see Sally. As
a new user of Legacy, I joined this discussion group to help learn better how
to use it. But, all I see are so many problems, issues and complaints, that I
was seriously thinking of abandoning Legacy and buying something else.

I had to remind myself that this is a discussion group for people to get
answers to issues before consulting the support team, so the list was doing its
job. But all the problems really made me wonder if I had made the right choice.

I think I will abandon the list instead and just plod along with Legacy until I
start doing all thise extra things you all are doing.

[LegacyUG] Finding Westerly with Anti Map

2015-02-26 Thread Barbara Schwarting
I’m struggling with the 1696 –1729 county for what is now Westerly, Washington,
Rhode Island, USA. I want to give the correct address for this time period. .

1.Washington County wasn’t formed until 1729.
2.When I plot Westerly with Anti Map, it looks like it was in New London, CT.
3. If I’m reading Anti Map correctly, then would the address be Westerly, New
London, Colony of Connecticut?

Would someone please help me understand this AntiMap?

Thanks, Barb

RE: [LegacyUG] Some questions about getting rid of Sourcewriter sources

2015-01-18 Thread Barbara Shroyer
Pat,

Your Basic source Footnote/Endnote Citation and Subsequent Citation are
identical. Your Bibliography is also the same except for omitting the Source
Detail. With SourceWriter the all three are different. The Subsequent
Citation will be shorter, often much shorter, than the Footnote/Endnote
Citation.

A deed using sourcewriter:

Footnote/Endnote Citation:

Stark County, Ohio, Deed Books, C: 53-54, Henry Bortner to Leonard Shroyer, 31
May 1815; FHL microfilm 956004.

Subsequent Citation:

Stark County, Ohio, Deed Books, C: 53-54.

Bibliography:

Ohio. Stark County. Deed Books. FHL microfilm 956004. Family History Library,
Salt Lake City, Utah.

Is there a “List of Citations”. All I can find is a List of Sources and I can
then click Show List (of people with source). That eventually takes me to
citations.

that the Federal Census Schedules are an excellent source of genealogical
information. Unfortunately the Virginia Censuses for 1790 and 1800 are lost and
can never be replaced. But the early tax records of the Virginian counties
still survive and list all individuals charged with a tax. They may also
contain names of young men who were tithable, or taxable, much like a male
dependent of a household. Names of recently deceased individuals whose property
was still in estate are also listed. There are many clues in tax lists that
suggest family relationships that can not be found in the early censuses.
Therefore these tax lists can be used as an alternative census for the missing

Lists) for each of the individual counties and cities that would have been
included in the Federal Censuses. These tax list images and indexes are used to
reconstruct the 1790 and 1800 censuses. The years of 1790 and 1800 are
considered an approximate year. In some cases the actual year 1790 or 1800 tax
list was very hard to read on the microfilm so we went up or down a couple of
years to find better quality images. As a BONUS we have added a new section for
the missing Virginia counties of the 1810 Federal Census. This Federal Census
is missing 18 Virginia counties. The tax lists are an excellent substitute for
these missing counties. Each list will be indexed as time permits. We are
constantly gathering tax lists and will post updates as needed. If you do not
find your particular tax list here today it may be here tomorrow.

RE: [LegacyUG] Some questions about getting rid of Sourcewriter sources

2015-01-18 Thread Barbara Shroyer
Wendy,
I was not criticizing your choice of Basic sources over SourceWriter. That is
your choice and, yes, Legacy is a flexible program. I'm used to TMG which is
even much more flexible and whose users have often been extremely creative in
utilizing that flexibility. That flexibility is also why, since support of TMG
has ended, that I've chosen Legacy.
My question had two purposes. (1) That there might be something in the source
choices (Basic or Sourcewriter) that I needed to be aware of as a new user and
(2) That the thread seemed to suggest Basic was the better choice while it
seemed to me personally to fall short.
