As I have already told u that if u want to write a CD, please compile ur

Don't forget to check the device number using the following --

[LIH] netscape address book

2000-03-29 Thread L.V.Gandhi

I am using netscape 4.7 in RH6.1. I used to make entries in address book
from
letter using add sender to address book. After opening address book if
I right click and select new message i get compose page with out
address.
Further if I type address, it does not show the multiple options as
shown in version 4.61. However as browser 4.7 is stable i am using it.
If I try to enter new card, after entering and clicking ok of new card,
all the entries vanish. If I close and open i see the entries.
How to come out of this address book problem.

Nick Hill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote on Monday, March 27, 2000
> Hi... Linux was developed on Minix by Linus.

Linux had followed Minix, the idea of open source was also there in Minix
but there are many differences:

1. Minix had a micro kernel design and Linux has a monolithic design
2. Minix was cross hardware design but Linux was specific to intel chips
(only recently it has been modified for other chips as well)

Minix had a better design, but the aim was for teaching. Whereas Linux was
designed to be a main stream O/S monolithic design or otherwise.

So the relation of Minix and Linux is more of a teacher and student
(influence wise).

Hi Dr. Sekar,

use the command *where startkde* (without the stars of course) to find out where the
startkde script is located on your machine.

Then put hash(#) before the following two lines in startkde script using vi / joe or
any editor :

#startifaudio kaudioserver
#startifaudio kwmsound

Now add the following just below these two lines :

kaudioserver &
kwmsound &

Restart KDE. This should work :-). It works on my SuSE 6.3 box. I use KDE.

Hope this helps.

Since Perl has been around for a looong time, there are a multitude
of readymade scripts available from CPAN and other places. Also,
for specific and repetative tasks involving running back and forth
between database and requests, perl is simpler. In such cases,
Python can be a pain, though modules are available.

As somebody has already said, Tom Christiansen's comparision of
Perl/Python is worth a look.

Anyway, Python as a language is far more "elegant" than PERL.
ANd yes, it IS a case of personal preference.u tend to do things

Kindly help me with the following:
I am not getting sound in kde-desktop theme.
In kde control center/sound, test is not working. The *.wav files are

In Gnome there is no problem in sound in desktop themes.
Where should I look for the link in kde desktop-sound that is missing.

I find python simple to learn even for beginners. I have initiated my
daughter, who is 12 years old, to programming using python. She found
it easy and did a few programs on her own, mostly math related. With
this experience in hand I would not hesitate to say, Python can be the
first language to be taught.

Earlier I used to program in lisp, which is clearly slower than python.
Python is possibly faster among the interpreters, but I have to check.

Re: [LIH] Problem with Lilo boot

2000-03-29 Thread SHRIDHAR N. DAITHANKAR

Hi

No this is not the case. It does not read the conf file every time.

See, lilo modifies mbr. When it's reading mbr it does not know what
operating system and file systems it's going to handle. If I set win95
and win98 dual boot using lilo, how do you expect lilo to read
/etc/lilo.conf when it does not know where linux resides? That's not the
point. You try running lilo after you change /etc/lilo.conf and see if it
continues the same faulty functionality. If it does, then we need to pondr
over the problem.

 Let us know

lilo is not an application. It's a system tool and nobody expects it to
change it's behaviour frequently. It's a setting to be done once that
generally require very infrequent attention

changing lilo.conf does not helps, this i have observed, even when
default=dos line is there, even at the time of installation , if u change
default to dos , still lilo boots linux as default, but 2 ways u can
certainly change
1. boot into linux and at command prompt type
$ lilo -D dos
(pcquest , issue i don't remember, on cover was "build ur own computer" )

2. use linuxconf to change the default OS ; this also works

With due apologies to Perl fanatics, I'll say that Python is much
neater, syntaxwise. In a way, closer to C...Since most people out
here are somewhat familiar with C++ rather than Perl at teh outset,
Python is easier to relate to..

Perl has its uses of course, it does incerdible things when u have a
database to maintain..it just does away the need to write huge

So, if u're planning to switch to Python from C, it is not a neat

RE: [LIH] Python and perl.

2000-03-29 Thread Rajkumar Andrews

I tend to agree with Arun. Like Mukund I too was confused whether to use Perl
or Python and how much time to spend to learn it. I would like to add that in
terms of semantics and structure Python is kinda more structured (logical?)
whilst Perl is more "loose". Speedwise certain tasks are done better by
Python. In terms of writing code, Python is easier because indentation takes
care of many things. These are only personal opinions - please visit
www.python.org and decide for yourself. Also Perl has been around longer so
there are already many advantages in terms of code (Perl Modules).
