I find python simple to learn even for beginners. I have initiated my daughter, who is 12 years old, to programming using python. She found it easy and did a few programs on her own, mostly math related. With this experience in hand I would not hesitate to say, Python can be the first language to be taught. Earlier I used to program in lisp, which is clearly slower than python. Python is possibly faster among the interpreters, but I have to check. Re: [LIH] Problem with Lilo boot
Hi No this is not the case. It does not read the conf file every time. See, lilo modifies mbr. When it's reading mbr it does not know what operating system and file systems it's going to handle. If I set win95 and win98 dual boot using lilo, how do you expect lilo to read /etc/lilo.conf when it does not know where linux resides? That's not the point. You try running lilo after you change /etc/lilo.conf and see if it continues the same faulty functionality. If it does, then we need to pondr over the problem. It's a system tool and nobody expects it to change it's behaviour frequently. mean sbin/lilo ? but see i have observed this also, once i changed dos as default during the time of install , still it booted in linux. while we are here, pls tell me this , at the time of reboot, the new .conf files should be read, b'cose the chnages have been made before last shutdown, so changes in lilo.conf should take place ,or is it necessary to stop and start the application each time we change the settings ?? regards rajeev "SHRIDHAR N. Re: [LIH] Problem with Lilo boot
changing lilo.conf does not helps, this i have observed, even when default=dos line is there, even at the time of installation , if u change default to dos , still lilo boots linux as default, but 2 ways u can certainly change 1. boot into linux and at command prompt type $ lilo -D dos (pcquest , issue i don't remember, on cover was "build ur own computer" ) 2. use linuxconf to change the default OS ; this also works HTH rajeev "Dr. Sarat Kumat Patra" wrote: > Hl. > > 1. In a way, closer to C...Since most people out here are somewhat familiar with C++ rather than Perl at teh outset, Python is easier to relate to.. I installed Win 98 first and next installed Linux as "Gnome workstation defauli" (Nov 99 PCQ CDROM). When machine starts the default OS selected is Linux. I want to make Win98 as the default O.S. I have done the following but it doen't help. Any ideas will be helpful. 1. I changed defalt O.S. with liloconf and made DOS as default but still the machine starts with Linux as default. 2. I checked the /etc/lilo.conf file in this file the default is set to DOS also but the ,achine starts with Linux as default when started. Any help witll be very helpful. RE: [LIH] Python and perl.
I tend to agree with Arun. Like Mukund I too was confused whether to use Perl or Python and how much time to spend to learn it. I would like to add that in terms of semantics and structure Python is kinda more structured (logical?) whilst Perl is more "loose". Speedwise certain tasks are done better by Python. In terms of writing code, Python is easier because indentation takes care of many things. These are only personal opinions - please visit www.python.org and decide for yourself. Also Perl has been around longer so there are already many advantages in terms of code (Perl Modules).
