I beleive that my settings from xconfig may not be proper at this time. I
will retry to set the configuration tomorrow. Marcus sent a earlier post
about initrd.sh. I will try mkinitrd.sh i2.4.6, that should give me
initrd-2.4.6.gz, I beleive that is the correct syntax. What I am not sure
about at this time is vmlinuz-2.4.6 as 2.4.2 has vmlinuz-2.4.2.modules.
Guess some faq is inorder here.

If you can educate me, I will lift a cold one in your name.

Thanks

Re: Sound problem

2001-07-10 Thread Alan Bryant

Yup, it does...I wouldn't worry about it if I didn't play DVDs on my PC (or
want to anyway...haven't gotten that working, yet), because since ogg is
functioning pretty well for me, I plan on encoding all my music cds and
putting them on my hd (need to use the space for something!)

Thanks a lot for the help, though, i appreciate it.

Nope. initrd can be used for anything that is required at boot time but
which was made into a module at compile time. Like reiserfs, or in my case,
yes, a second scsi controller. It is read onto a ram disk first thing at
boot so that the modules are available during the boot.

off without a hitch.

On the "hardware offer" I'll take a pass ;-)

I suppose you don't recall what command line args you gave it?

Actually, I just encoded a second song, and their is hardly ANY crackling in
it. I guess sometimes it just depends.

Re: OggVorbis

2001-07-10 Thread Alan Bryant

I think they can pull it off...aside from the crackling, the audio seems
somewhat clearer. I have a 5 minute song that is only 1 meg in size in ogg
format. This particular song has some loud parts in it, and you can't tell
there's any crackling in it, and sounds nicer than mp3. Just my $0.02, though.

It's been a while since I played with OGG, but IIRC, it really depended
heavily on the options for encoding the song. The couple of OGGs I did were
indistinguishable from thei MP3 couterparts, yet were smaller. I haven't
played around with OGG encoding from a while, though.

2001-07-10 Thread Alan Bryant

Now that I have actually listened to an ogg file that I encoded from my cd,
and gone back and read the FAQ on the Vorbis website, ogg files aren't quite
audio superior to MP3files yet, because oggenc (the ogg encoder) isn't as far
along as the actual ogg format. There is quite a bit of popping and crackling
during the song in the ogg file.

Matt,
This worked flawlessly. Well, not quite flawlessly, I had trouble
disconnecting from the server. I ended up switching to a console (ctl-alt-F1)
and killing X and kdm. There's gotta be a better way to close the session
than that. I'll keep looking into it.

Just a matter of curiosity. Not being a PGP user, there's probably
something basic I don't understand.

What good does all the PGP crap in your mails accomplish, other than
cluttering up every mail from you with stuff that we don't need to see?

Well, according to the OggVorbis website (http://vorbis.com), the file size
for the same bitrate is smaller in ogg format, and the audio quality is
better than mp3. It's also open, non-patented format! =)

I'm just curious as to wether or not anyone hear has had any experience with
ogg audio files? Have you ripped any cds into ogg format instead of mp3? If
so, did you just use oggenc and cdparanoia or cdda2wav, or did you use a GUI
frontend to those? IMHO, this would make a cool SxS if anyone has any
experience with it. I know I'm interested.

Okay, now for the next level... Picture thisMachine A is
masqueraded behind Machine B. Machine D is also behind Machine C.
Or:
A--B-public internet-C--D
|___|

Now A & D are both class A ip addresses, 10.10.108.0 and 10.144.120.0.
Using ssh how can you export a display from A to D or vice versa?
export DISPLAY=65.121.54.118:65.121.54.119:10.144.120.51:0.0??
1st public ip__|| ||| || |||
2nd public ip|| ||| || |||
2nd  local ip__|| ||| ||| ||
Since machine B & C are public they work easily. Or A to B, B to C or C
to D, and even A to C. But how can you specify an export three machines
back from one network to another? Is it so simple I've overlooked it?

Rick,

I don't have a clue what you are referring to. My kernel compile SxS
makes no mention of initrd anything. Can you point me to the SxS you are
following.

As to the latter, if your /boot has a symlink like vmlinuz --> vmlinuz...
you can either remove it and point it to the new kernel, or you can change
your lilo or grub to add a new entry that points to the new kernel name.

You can also twiddle/create /etc/rpmrc or $HOME/.rpmrc to get the

It might be as easy as:
X -query name_or_ip_of_hostmachine

This is better done after you exit from X on the client machine.
If you get error messsages, post them. The X server must be running on the
hostmachine. Just start kde or whatever on the host machine. There will
likely be some permissions problems, but they are easy to solve.

What error (if any) did you get?

And what did you change in the way of modules that should go into initrd?
And did you configure to allow an initrd ram?

For instance, yest I recompiled but missed the initrd option... On boot it
couldn't mount my reiserfs partition because reiserfs was a module and
although it was sitting in initrd, initrd wasn't being used.

Re: Suse vs Mandrake decision

2001-07-10 Thread rplummer

Comment on Mandrake 8.0

I downloaded the ISO for both the install and the extended stuff. The
install went great, but then I have a pretty plain vanilla machine to
install it on. However, I was disappointed in the KDE that was
installed. I didn't see the familiar KDE panel, menu and etc. While
browsing through the menus it seemed very Gnome centric even in
KDE. Couldn't find the usual KDE configuration screens etc. Also
Mandrake used to put the icons on the desktop for the CD Floppy disk
and Printer. All that came up was the Trash and Home icons. However,
Gnome desktop was fully configured. One wonders if Mandrake is
pushing Gnome by limiting KDE.

Also for some reason after I had it running for about an hour, it started
writing to my hard drive and locked up the mouse and keyboard this
continued for several minutes and did not let up. I finally had to just
shut the thing down (power off).

The one other annoying thing was that it configured my video so that
the visable screen on my 17" monitor was located in the lower right
quadrant of the monitor. It had about an inch on the top and left side of
black space. Again, couldn't find anyway to adjust that through the
KDE menus. As I use the same monitor for 4 machines, I did not want
to adjust the monitor controls on the monitor as all the others place the
screen in the center of the monitor.

Just my .02 cents.

Will dL SUSE and give it a try.

Even if you don't choose SuSE, MAKE SURE YOU TRY IT! It is a different
feel, but it's nice! That and the fact that the 7 CD's for Professional
have a huge amount of CATALOGUED software... What do I mean by this? Do
you remember the "Specify Selection" option W3.1 and LTP gave you when
installing, allowing you to choose the apps to install? Well, imagine
something like that which allows un-/installing entire software selections
(notifying and/or automagically installing dependent packages). We're
talking INTELLIGENCE programmed in!

Other than that, it has a nice look and feel, like it was polished a bit.

Assuming hostnames or and

1. On type:
# xhost downstairs

2. Telnet to 'downstairs'

3. On 'downstairs' type
# export DISPLAY=upstairs:0.0

4. Run your app at the command line as usual, the DISPLAY will be output

Re: Stupid newbie network question

2001-07-10 Thread Susan Macchia

You can run you KDE apps from your downstairs PC fairly easily w/o
having to use a GUI login. If you are networked, simply telnet to your
downstairs PC in an xterm. Once logged in, set your display to your
upstairs PC:

in C-shell:
$ setenv DISPLAY :0

Now you can run any app from that term and display it on your upstairs
machine.

Hope this helps.

Re: Can't read floppy disk

2001-07-10 Thread Glenn Williams

Hi, Group:

Many thanks to all who responded to the many e-mails on this subject.

The problem is with that particular floppy disk. The SuSE install
program offers to create a boot floppy and also to write the LILO
information to the same disk. The disk was somehow corrupted and had
no identifiable file system(s) on it.

I made another boot floppy and the system mounted and read it without
difficulty.

Sheesh!

Best regards,

Glenn

Re: Stupid newbie network question

2001-07-10 Thread Matt . Carpenter

VNC is like a Remotely Possible. But it is unnecessary to do what you are
trying to do

X-Windows is by nature a networked windowing system. This means that it
can act like Terminal Services, allowing multiple sessions at the same time
across the network, as opposed to sharing the only one (that shows up on
the computer screen) like RP or pcAnywhere.

Study the /etc/X11/kdm/Xaccess file. You do NOT want a Chooser setup,
because that (IIRC) just acts as a "Central Directory" for available X
Servers to log into.
I (on my protected home network) uncommented the line with a single "*" on
it, meaning accept a GUI-login connection from anyone. There are various
ACL capabilities in this file you may want to consider. Then, restart your
X-Server on the server host. (CTRL-ALT-BKPSC).

On the machine you'd like to log in FROM, you want to be in Runlevel 3
(CLI). From the commandline, type something like:

X -query

and it should bring up a GUI login screen. There are many better accounts
of this config, but I hope this serves as a decent overview.

Yes. Find /var/lib/rpm/rpmrc (or some such). Change the default

Got compile with no error, no unresolves.

On SxS you say modify menu.lst

menu.lst now:
kernel = /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.6-modular vga=274 quiet root=/dev/hda1
#kernel = /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.2-modular vga=274 quiet root=/dev/hda1
initrd = /boot/initrd-2.4.6.gz
#initrd = /boot/initrd-2.4.2.gz

were do I get the initrd-2.4.6.gz file or do I need to create it?
I did remove symlink to vmlinuz-2.4.2-modular & set it to vmlinuz-2.4.6, is
this correct.

I think that 'parts' of the west bay may not be too out of line, but
they're less convenient. HMB and Pacifica are certainly cheaper than
Palo Alto, and I think there are a lot of people who write code in HMB.
There are parts of SF that are not totally crazy, but you'll need to
take out better life insurance, and the commute to Fremont is not
pleasant (I have a client in Fremont and I don't even try to go over
there before 10:00 AM and it still takes an hour). Neither is the
commute from HMB (I used to commute from HMB to Mountain View about 10
years ago when the traffic was acceptable and it still took over 45
minutes). A house up on Skyline is perhaps about 50% - 60% of what it
would be down the hill. And just because we're up here doesn't mean we
can afford it ;-)

Rick:

1) Please stop cross posting...

2) I don't know whether this has anything to do with your 2.4.6 problem but I
just spent 3 days trying to get it to compile. It is very sensitive to the
options you choose and it can get unresolved refs very easily. I must have
compiled at least 20 times and I finally re-downloaded everything and started
from scratch. That was a charmer. And I don't even know what I changed
that fixed it.

sure, build a few like that to get comfortable with rpm before trying to

as long as you haven't changed changed or added too much (library-wise)
other's should be able to install them as well.

Thanks Keith,

Well the qt, base, i18n are done, libs is being chewed on now. I don't
have a website to post on but I'll be happy to upload or email (I don't
think they'd fit in some of the buffers for email though) the rpms when

IIRC the --target option only works when you've installed the srpm via
rpm -ivh .srpm, which will place the actual source files
(plus any patches) under /usr/src/OpenLinux/SOURCES/ and a .spec
under /usr/src/OpenLinux/SPECS.

To use the --target option cd to the directory containing the .spec
file(s) and then as root issue:

rpm -bb --target=ix86 .spec

you might want to first look in the RPMS directory first to make sure
that the target exists, if not create it and carry on.

please note: it's been a very long time since I've worked with RPMS so,
be warned, YMMV and RTFM just to be sure =)

Re: Can't read floppy disk

Hi, Mike:

Before I screw around with this SuSE 7.2 boot disk (which is currently
my only means to boot the system) I will need to go into YaST2 and make
another boot disk.

(Does anyone else get the feeling that someone at SuSE has had problems
with their or keys?)

According to fdisk, there are several partitions with different file
types, among which are both Unix and Linux.

Thanks for the info. Also, thanks to others for their suggestions.

I've see reports from djbdns users on the Caldera list in the past. I've
only used it for a local caching dns, since I don't run servers. Now
would be a good time to have an SxS report from those of you who are
really using djbdns for your DNS servers.

---snip---

I agree! KRUISER is a real nice piece of work. Only three minor nits bother me
though...

1 - Try as I may, I have not found a way to compile the damn thing from source.
Version 0.40 is the most recent and I can't get it to detect libkimgio.so to
save my life. The author knows about the problem, even offers a fix for it...
but it's a no go.

I did find an RPM of 0.40 that I could twist into installing on eDesktop
2.40... :')

2 - Like all the previous versions, the bitmaps on the toolbar buttons are all
screwed up. I though this was fixed? ;')

3 - one very glaring bug can be found in the preferences, under SMB. Be CERTAIN
you select the correct samba version on that dialog, so kruiser can interface
with smbmount that resides on the client. Running SAMBA 2.2.0a here and
selecting anything other than 2.06 will cause KDE to lockup dead. It's not a
software crash, it's smbmount trying to process an incorrect call from kruiser.
if you called kruiser from the desktop via a link... KDE will be locked into a
totally dead state... Becareful. Why kruiser can't query smbmount to detect the
version level is... stupid.

That said, KRUISER 0.40 is the ticket if you need a nice looking samba shares
browser to keep your ex-windows users relatively happy.

Thank you, for the reminder Matt.

Ok I will indeed try it again to see if its improved over the last 6 months but it was
useless
last time. The real problem lies in that the camera is supposed to be seen as a
removable drive and non of those devs are any use. Underr windows its seen as a USB
removeable
drive and there appears to nothing compatibel in linux, as yet.
