Why the hell is it possible to insert Insets in a InsetERT byt copy/paste!!!
There is a Inset-method called
virtual bool insetAllowed(Inset::Code) const { return false; }
And this is implemented in InsetCollapsable AND InsetERT. As the function
is defined "virtula" it should always call the function in InsetERT (am
I mistaken here?), while now it is calling the function in InsetCollapsable!!!
Have a look (with a debugger) at the function Paragraph::insertFromMinibuffer
while pasting another inset inside an InsetERT and try to follow the
insetAllowed function and you see where it end's up.
I'm REALLY clueless about this. Do only I see this? Is this my compiler?
Or do others experience the same problem?

write the corresponding "\usepackage[sort]{natbib}" statement when

UserGuide.lyx LaTeX-ing problems
I'm now able to load the UserGuide in lyx-cvs. But when I want to LaTeX
it I get errors because some subsection have an underscore for the first
character in their text. I tracked that down to the \usepackage{colors}
if I remove that package from the produced LaTeX file I have no problems
latexing the exported UserGuide.
Is this a known problem for the "color"-package???

It does, however, (or it should and does with me) write
\usepackage[authoryear]{natbib}
or
\usepackage[numbers]{natbib}
I suggest that if you want "sort" then you edit the latex file by hand.
Temporary fix of course.

Such a sort option would be nice indeed! Maybe I was dreaming when I wrote
my email :-)
But I would be very glad if I got a "usepackage" option at all! Maybe it
has to do with the fact that my PhD is a multipart document? A possible
explanation would be that the usepackage statement is only added in case
of a citation and LyX just looks into the main document (where there is
just a bibliography reference).

adding some math code in a figure caption breaks LyX' latex output if your
documents includes a table of figures (see tiny example file). Note: This
worked about three weeks ago - AFAIK it's not a limitation of Latex.

Here is the method that checks whether we should have a "usepackage" at the
start of the document.

Ie, go through each and every Citation inset and if any one of them is a
citep, citet etc, then flag usepackage{natbib} for inclusion.
All of your citation commands are still "cite" aren't they?
There is little point in including natbib if you aren't going to use it!

Anyway, now the patch works on my machine, and I think it's great. A thesaurus is a must have in a word processor, and it's nice to see that LyX is one of the first free Unix word processors that can get this ability. The code looks nice, and it works beautifully. Therefore, I think we should aceept the patch, with a few caveats. You have a few TODOs here and there in the code. As far as I can see, those are not mayor issues, but maybe you have done more work on them. One small thing: The button changes from Close to Cancel once there is something in the selection input field. However, I can't make it change back to Close again. I'd expect it to do this, if I clear the selection field. Also, after using Replace, I'd expect the selection field to clear out, and the button to change to Close. Also, I think you should bind this to shift+F7, at least in CUA. This is the standard key for thesaurus in Word, and thus we will follow the lead we already do with using F7 for spellchecking. Additionally, you should update the NEWS file, the documentation somewhere (probably extended.lyx, but maybe Mike can be convinced to put it in if you write it). Remember to add links to the dependent libraries. If you have the time to make these updates, I'm sure the patch will be accepted. Btw, general comment: what happened to the project of extending the LaTeXConfig.lyx file into a general dependency file, not just for LaTeX stuff, but for all general programs we rely on? We did extend the file at last years dev-meeting in Norway, but it's not used. Jean-Marc, or some other configure-wizard, is it a problem to extend the configure stuff to update such a file with information about detected programs and libraries that LyX can use? Greets, Asger

I don't know of a 'good' explanation anywhere (and I've asked for one
myself, on comp.text.tex, but I now can't find my posting).
Basically:
Sometime LaTeX moves text to auxiliary files and back again. Most
notably, things which are going to end up in the table of
contents. When it does this, it "fully-expands" the text in a \edef
first.
Certain commands unavoidably (sadly), fully-expand into something
stupid, which can't be read back it in. Or, they can go through the
cycle once but not twice, or something like that. These commands are
called 'fragile' commands.
Most fragile commands can be made robust (the opposite!) by preceding
them with \protect. This isn't 100% though, I don't think. \protect
\( does work, I believe, but $ is the preferred solution for a 'robust
\('.

LyX-1.1.6fix1 adds these \protect statements only inside of captions (and
maybe some other critical constructs) but not to formula in common text.

In order to enlighten you I looked into my Latex book:
Jules is right - $ is the robust version of \(. There are no other
differences than this between both notations. In addition, a \protect can
always be added to \( - in worst case it is just ignored.
Proposal: Replace all "\(" by "$" and the work is done.

It doesn't I don't think. There's a bug in this area with latex round-trips,
if we \protect the math then when we read it back in from the latex the \protect
shows up as latex in the lyx doc, then exporting adds *another* \protect etc.

Normally I can add a latex package and run "Re-configure". Ah!
That's tricky! I want LyX to use natbib and LyX checks whether I really
need it! (I have an old document, where all citet and citep commands are
given as latex code. Obviously, LyX does not identify them!)
BTW: Is there a way to use \usepackage[sort]{natbib} in the preamble and
activate natbib support in LyX at the same time?

Yes, but the point remains. You'll get the same output, whether or not you
use natbib, so therefore don't use it. Why include unnecessary packages?
If I'm wrong (ie a cite is different when using natbib to when not using it)
then of couurse the fix is trivial.
If I'm right, then I'd say leave things as they are.

When you write to the lyx file, you will never write the \protect commands, since InsetFormula::write calls to latex with fragile=false.

I just want the code that builds LaTeXConfig.lyx to consider programs so that the user has a chance to see what other programs and libraries might be nice to have. Obviously, for libraries, the user would have to rebuild LyX to use them, but for things like ChkTeX and imagemagick, which are external programs that are not linked into LyX, it does make sense to reconfigure and detect programs that LyX can exploit. Afterwards, the user would then be able to typographically check his program, or include a GIF picture. Also, it is very useful to have one place to list all the programs and libraries that LyX can use. It's quite a few these days. Greets, Asger

There is a simple explanation: If I really do not understand something after staring at it for a while (\approx `time drink -what beer -count 1`) and it looks ugly, I remove it. Even if you use numeric mode, the user might use some of natbib options (e.g. sort) which can give different result than the standard latex \cite.

1. Change the language for the whole paragraph:

This should be translated to \lang french in the lyx file

This problem is not solved by dynamical linking or by introducing some complicated external communication method with an external program. In fact, we can't solve this problem. Therefore, the patch does the correct thing: It detects whether AikSaurus and bzip2lib are present. If not, the thesaurus feature is left out. Point me at the sources and I will do this: 1) Create AikSaurus RPMs. 2) Change the lyx CVS RPMs to require the AikSaurus RPMs. All Linux systems I have access to have bzip2lib installed, so I think that requiring the AikSaurus Saurus stuff for Linux is acceptable (since it adds such a great feature). Yes, I'm still alive. Jose, it's great to see that you made progress on the reLyX stuff. I took a brief look at it and it looked fine, although I might have done a couple things differently. Unfortunately, I don't have much free time, or I could try to help with the uninstalled reLyX problem. Still, it was nice to see a file in reLyX/ updated more recently than 2 years ago. -Amir

I have reproduced this problem. Also, Tutorial.lyx produces the
same type of problem (with a much smaller input file).

Footnote inset rendering problem
Using the 1.2.0cvs lyx version, open up .../doc/Tutorial.lyx, 1) scroll down to section 1.3.2, where there is a footnote. 2) Resize the LyX screen so that not all the footnote shows up (it goes off the right edge of the screen). 3) Now, put the cursor insider the footnote inset, you can right-arrow all the way to the edge of the screen (and beyond!!) without being able to see the whole inset text. This is obviously a problem, since it makes editing moderate-sized footnotes impossible with current CVS. -- Kayvan A. usepackage{color}
I've been looking at te new \usepackage{color} in LaTeX output problem...
I think it has to do with the way the way the ERT inset is created:

\family typewriter
\color latex
\lang ignore
\backslash
linebreak
\end_inset
The "\color latex" causes the color feature to be set to true, which
then causes the \usepackage[none]{color} line to be output.
Also, the "\lang ignore" is making these messages come up upon reload:

Saving and reloading again causes the \lang ignore lines to disappear,
which causes the blue underlining to disappear, but the color problem
is still there.

I have been laboring mightily to convert all the docs to 1.2.0 and have
not yet succeeded in getting the UG, Tutorial, and Customization to
convert for all of the above reasons. Keep an eye on lyxdoc CVS; I will
keep banging on them for the next couple of days ...
