Re: to anne r.RE: page wrap in pages

2013-07-30 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Linda,

TextEdit is a simplified word processor which is very useful, but it isn't a
professional tool.

Pages, on the other hand, is much more sophisticated and can produce all kinds
of professional documents.

Everyone has different requirements. I couldn't work as a professional
translator without Pages since MS Office isn't accessible. You can create
templates in Pages which is a useful feature. It's handy to have a template for
business letters, for instance. It can save a lot of time.

However, until you're really comfortable with VoiceOver, Pages is likely to be
more trouble than it's worth, and TextEdit is so easy to use.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: page wrap in pages

2013-07-30 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Linda,

Pages is not good for reading straight through a document. Sometimes it works
but most often it doesn't. If this is a document created in Pages, then I'd
just select all (Cmd-a), copy to clikpboard and paste into a TextEdit document
which will read straight through just fine.

I set a short cut for the Service New TextEdit Window Containing Selection. You
can do this by going to System Preferences/Keyboard/Short cuts and selecting
Services in the first table. You'll find this option under Text in the second
table. It's a very useful command in many situations.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Re-installing the OS on a MacBook Air

2013-07-29 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Andy,

First of all, no Macs come with boot disks anymore. That ended with the arrival
of the Appstore, much to my regret.

All Macs running Lion or later have a recovery partition which is where you go
to reinstall the system. Alternatively, you can download the OS again and make
a bootable USB key, which is what I always do so that I can do a clean install
without being obliged to connect to the internet via ethernet to ensure a
reliable connection.

You can find information online about creating a bootable USB key.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: the font in OSX

2013-07-24 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Linda,

To change the font, you need to select the text to be changed before pressing
Cmd-t to open the fonts palette. You can then use VO-Cmd-t to jump to the first
table where you select the Collection. You can just use VO-Right arrow after
that to go to the next table where you select the Family. VO-Right arrow twice
more will take you to the table where you choose Regular, Italic, etc. Then to
the right again to the size. Just press Cmd-t to close the fonts palette again
and your text should be changed. Don't forget to press an arrow key to unselect
the text.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Reading to the end of a document

2013-07-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Andy,

Josh is correct that some commands have no shortcut assigned to them but they
can be assigned to any of the commanders. For instance, I always set a Keyboard
commander shortcut to toggle between DOM and Groups mode for Web browsing. In
general, I prefer Groups mode, but for some tasks, DOM is more effective.

Cheers,

Anne

Yes, BusySync does just what you want. We share quite a few calendars but not

There's actually a trial version of BusyCal available from the BusyMac website

2013-07-22 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Dónal,

BusyCal is a different product, so maybe they've stopped developing BusySync.
It still works for us with ML, so maybe it would be worth your while
downloading it from MacUpdate. It appears to cost $39 from there. Here's the
link:
<https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/25922/busysync>

Cheers,

Anne

Hello Dónal,

We've been using BusySync to syncronise our calendars for years. It's a
preference pane and you can select which calendars to sync.

The publisher is:

They also do BusyCal which apparently replaces the Calendar app but we haven't
tried that.

Re: Saving favourite links

2013-07-20 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Andy,

The Copy link option in the contextual menu doesn't always work. It all depends
on how the page was coded. However, when on a link, VO-Shift-u will read the
actual link and VO-Shift-c will copy it to the clipboard. It was the Copy link
command that failed when I tried to give you the direct download link for Get
iPlayer Automator.

Cmd-l will open the addresss bar and highlight the address already in it. This
means that you can copy the address with Cmd-c.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: The insertion point when working with text

2013-07-19 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Andy,

You can change the way the insertion point works to be more like JAWS in
VoiceOver Utility, Verbosity, Text, When moving the cursor: click the button
and select Speak text to the right of the cursor.

Personally, I like the standard Mac way of doing things which is that the
insertion point is to the right of what you just heard when navigating to the
right, and to the left of what you just heard when navigating to the left. This
seems logical to me.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Mail busy message

2013-07-18 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Carol,

Often, when you're not allowed to shut down or quit an application, it's
because there's a dialogue box open. Use the Window chooser (VO-F2-F2) to see
what's there.

Have you looked for someone to give you some basic Mac and VoiceOver training?
It might help you get up and running. I can't help you with that because I'm in
France and all my basic teaching materials are in French. I also only teach Mac
beginners face to face rather than on the phone or via Skype. But I'm sure
there must be someone who can help you get familiar with your Mac.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Mail busy message

2013-07-18 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Andy and Carol,

I really don't have this problem with Mail and I receive hundreds of messages
every day. However, I have some suggestions.

Whenever applications are behaving unreasonably, I find it useful to repair
permissions. You do this by opening the Utilities folder (Cmd-Shift-u) and
opening Disk Utility.

In Disk Utility, there is a table with which you interact to find your internal
hard drive. It's usually the second item in the table and is often called
Macintosh HD. Select it and stop interacting. Then navigate twice right and
check that First Aid is selected.

Navigate down from there to the button Repair Disk Permissions and click it.

You can follow the progress of the permissions repair by navigating up to
Results and interacting with that table.

When the repair is complete, the bottom line will say as much and you can quit
the Utility.

Cheers,

Anne

Hello Andy,

Here's the link:

Here's how to use GetIplayerAutomator.

You need to press Return after entering the programme name in the search box.
You then select the one you want from the Results table and click Add to queue.
Then interact with the tool bar and click Start. Stop interacting with the tool
bar and go to last visible item where you can follow the progress of the
download.

2013-07-12 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Judy,

Here's how to use GetIplayerAutomator.

You need to press Return after entering the programme name in the search box.
You then select the one you want from the Results table and click Add to queue.
Then interact with the tool bar and click Start. Stop interacting with the tool
bar and go to last visible item where you can follow the progress of the
download.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Listening to BBC radio with a Mac

2013-07-08 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Andy,

First of all, you need to install Flash player if you haven't done so already.

On the BBC 5 Live page, type Victoria Derbyshire into the search box and press
Return.

When the page has loaded, use the Web rotor to find the heading with iPlayer
and the number of results.

When you locate the date you want, click the link, there are two for each
result, both of which work.

On the next page, use the item chooser to find Listen now and click it.

Cheers,

Anne

Hello Andy,

I can listen again to radio programmes by going to the appropriate BBC web page
and clicking on the Listen now button. I can't pause the stream, but it does
play straight through. Use the Item chooser (VO-i) to find the Listen now
button quickly.

Hi all it's not the Bbc's fault it's Adobe's for not making their
Flash Player accessible on the mac. There's no fix any time soon either.

To reset the PRAM, you have to hold down Command, Option, p and r, then press
the Power key and keep holding down the four keys until you hear the chime four
times. Release the four keys and the machine will boot normally.

Also, having done updates, it's a good idea to repair permissions.

Cheers,

Anne

Hello John,

Have you tried pressing Command-F5 to turn VoiceOver on?

Also, did the shop set up the computer for you?

Cheers,

Re: Rookie Safari questions

2013-07-06 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Stan,

To be able to return to the spot on a webpage that you just left, you need to
open the link in a new window by getting a contextual menu (VO-Shift-m). The
first option is Open Link in New Window. You can then just close that window
and you'll be back where you started.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Tables For Mac

2013-06-23 Thread Anne Robertson
You can also create a table in Numbers and paste it into a Pages document. But
with Pages, if you select the table, you can set it to Floating in the Wrap
inspector and then read it or edit it as you please.

Pages is also a lot cheaper than Nisus Writer Pro.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Questions regarding Nisus Writer Pro

2013-06-22 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Christian,

You can do everything you mentioned in Pages. You can calculate the position of
any item on the page using the Metrics inspector, and you can create and
manipulate tables. You just have to set Floating in the Wrap inspector while
you work on the table, then set it back to Inline when you're done.

Of course, you need to know the size of the paper you're working with and be
able to do simple maths.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: working with MS word documents.

2013-06-22 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Shaun,

I use Pages to handle MS Word documents. This works fine unless there are lots
of text boxes which do not display correctly in Pages when they come from Word.
There can also be problems with missing fonts, but this is true even if you
have Office for Mac and can also be true between Windows machines. It all
depends on which fonts you have installed.

Cheers,

Anne

Have you, by any chance, been adding shortcuts in System Preferences then
pressed Cmd-q to quit? You could, accidentally, have used Cmd-q for a different

ABBYY FineReader is the best scanning and OCR app for the Mac. It's easy to use

Prizmo for Mac is accessible but horrible to use and doesn't correct the

Unfortunate experience with new Mac

2013-06-07 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

Last Monday, a day before the arrival of two students for a three-day VoiceOver
course, one of our two MacBook Pros that we use for training gave up the ghost.
It was running hotter and hotter so I shut it down and let it cool off. I then
zapped the PRam, but it never booted again. That machine has always been
temperamental, but it seems to have suffered a fatal stroke this time!

What to do with two students, neither of whom could bring a machine of their
own?

Well, my MacBook Air that I've been very happy with is two years old, so we
decided I could have a new one as an early birthday present.

My husband bought me a lovely new 11-inch MBA with 256 GB SSD and 8 GB of RAM
(just what I wanted!). He brought it home from Paris, along with our two
students.

It was after dinner before I could even unpack my new toy. I booted it up and
set the language and keyboard, then imported my data from my Time Machine
backup.

That's when disaster struck! This new machine told me that I could now start
enjoying using Lion! But my password didn't work! I couldn't access my new
computer and get Mountain Lion. Apparently, because my new MBA is a higher spec
machine than most people buy, it had been in the Louvres Applestore since just
before Mountain Lion started shipping with new computers.

Luckily, we always keep a USB key with the latest OS on it. So I shut down my
new MBA and did a clean install of Mountain Lion. I then had to import all my
data once again.

The next problem was the Infovox iVox voices that started nagging me. I set
everything to use Fred, but as long as the Infovox iVox voices were on my
system, I couldn't do a thing with VoiceOver.

I'm lucky to have a sighted husband who knows an awful lot about Macs. So he
was able to remove the voices from my system.

We then had to set up my old MBA in French and with a new user name for one of
the students.

This was Archie's job first thing on Wednesday morning while I ran through some
basics with our students.

Well, the students have now left and they said they were delighted with the
course. But we're absolutely exhausted! And I can now start looking at tweaking
my new toy and putting the Infovox iVox voices back on it under less stressful
circumstances. It really is an incredibly fast machine!

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Using finder in date view

2013-05-27 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello David,

On a British keyboard, the vertical line character is shift on the key two to
the right of semicolon. That's the key just to the left of the long bit of the
Return key.

So, to sort the column, press VO-Shift-backslash, then VO-Space, then
VO-Shift-Backslash again.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Using finder in date view

2013-05-27 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello David,

I always use the Finder in List view which allows sorting by date or anything
else. To open a folder in List view, you can either do Cmd-Down Arrow or Cmd-o.
Cmd-Up arrow takes you back to the parent folder.

I'm sorry, I can't relate this to Windows as I've never used Windows.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: batch converting documents using fine reader on the mac can it bedone?

2013-05-27 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello David,

FineReader for Mac can convert multiple pages in one batch, but it can't put
them into separate files. So, if all the JPG images are in one file, it can be
opened with FineReader and all the images will be converted. I regularly give
FineReader files of TIFF images from VueScan and it works fine.

Cheers,

Anne

Hello Michael,

ABBYY FineReader for Mac is an express version and does not have the feature
you're looking for. I've never used Windows so was not aware of how FineReader
works on that platform.

Hello Michael,

Have you tried going to each file in the Finder and opening the file with
FineReader? I can't see why this wouldn't work. As long as you close FineReader
after processing a document, it will not put them all into one file.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: anyone on list use ABBYY fine reader for mac?

2013-05-12 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Michael,

I'm not sure what you mean by "scanning" in this context. If you have PDFs,
they are already scanned or created from text files. If they've been scanned,
just go to the PDF file, do VO-Shift-m to get a contextual menu, then navigate
down to Open with then right to the list of possible applications and select
ABBYY FineReader. You'll then be able to choose HTML from the options available.

If your PDF has been created from a text file, you might get better results by
taking a screenshot of each page and using FineReader to OCR each one.

It's normal that FineReader prefs are dimmed since they do not exist.

I use FineReader regularly and it does an excellent job.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: mac OCR scanning software for use with voice over.

2013-05-05 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Stuart,

ABBYY FineReader Express is your best option for scanning on the Mac. I use it
with a cheap Canon portable scanner, the Canoscan Lide 110 and the results are
excellent.

If you need to scan multiple pages, it can be a bit tedious as you have to
return to the scanner window each time. For scanning something like a book, I
use VueScan to capture the images, then ABBYY FineReader to perform the OCR.
VueScan is not available in the Appstore, you have to get it from the
developer. The Website is:
www.hamrick.com

You can use VueScan without a licence but it leaves a watermark on the image.
the licence costs $39 for one year, or $79 for life. We've had our VueScan
licence for over 10 years and still get good support when necessary.

VueScan can also be set to auto-repeat should you prefer this method of working.

I can provide a setup guide for VueScan to anyone who asks me for it.

Cheers,

Anne

This is great! As soon as I logged in, I saw all the books we've bought in

By the way, Bad Science has been available from Kobo for some time so I've
already been able to read it.

Hello Isaac,

Here's the method described on the other list, but it doesn't work for me.

"Using Preview on the Mac, Interact with the Toolbar, press the Edit button,
Stop Interacting with the Toolbar, navigate right to the Edit Toolbar, Interact
with it, then select the Text tool. Now, when you wish to enter info in an
Edit field, navigate to it, then press VO-shift-space so that the cursor is
activated and enter the text."

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Best Braille Display To Use With iOS

2013-04-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Isaac,

I've had no success connecting my Handytech Braillino with my iPhone despite
the fact that it is one that is supposed to work. I asked Apple about it and
they sent me to Handytech who suggested I should get the Bluetooth chip
changed. My Braillino works fine with my MacBook Air and I could pair it with
my husband's 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina.

I think other Handytech models work better.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Lost Say all on Text Edit

2013-04-16 Thread Anne Robertson
Wrap to page or Wrap to window has no effect on formatting. Interestingly, when
Wrap to window is set, the VO page up and page down commands don't work.
However, it's easy enough to change from one to the other depending on what you
want to do.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: hilighting blocks of text with VO on the internet

2013-04-11 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello David,

First of all, for lines to appear in the rotor of Quick Nav, which I assume is
what Michael is talking about, you need to have Lines checked in the Web Rotor
options in VoiceOver Utility. Then, I think the additional options only show up
if you have Single Key navigation enabled.

It certainly does work on the page you linked to.

Anne

Re: Talking Goggles for IOS

2013-04-09 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Brenda,

I use an iPhone 5 and the StandScan Pro is a foldable box with interior
lighting and a hole in the centre of the top. You place a smart phone, in my
case the iPhone 5, with its camera pointing down through the hole, and take a
picture of a document that you place in the bottom of the box. The box is
designed so that you get a good quality picture every time, even if you can't
see anything at all.

The best OCR app for working with the StandScan Pro is TextGrabber. However, if
you haven't got the StandScan Pro, the best OCR app for the iPhone is Prizmo,
which is much more forgiving about not having the document quite straight.

Talking Goggles works wonderfully for identifying books, CDs and other objects
that can be compared with existing images. The cover of a particular CD is
always the same so it does not take a human to make the comparison.

I hope this clarifies things a bit.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Talking Goggles for IOS

2013-04-09 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Chris,

Talking Goggles isn't the appropriate app for identifying a basket of apples.
TapTapSee is much better for that.

Talking Goggles reads text and recognises famous images. So it reads the covers
of books since they can be found on the internet and are always the same. It
also recognised for me the picture of Tower Bridge on a place mat. However, it
won't recognise a dog, for instance. It identified my labrador/golden retriever
lying on a marble-tiled floor as an alp, which was not helpful.

Talking Goggles is totally automated with no human intervention. TapTapSee is a
combination of both.

By the way, did you use Talking Goggles in Video mode? This is by far the best
way for someone totally blind to use it. I also check the light level with the
Light Detector app before using Talking Goggles so that I can decide whether
the flash should be on or off.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Talking Goggles for IOS

Hello Brenda,

I think you'd be better off using an OCR app for that purpose. SayText is free
but I've never had much success with it. I prefer Prizmo for using free hand,
or TextGrabber for use with my StandScan Pro.

Talking Goggles will probably read some of the text, but not all.

Talking Goggles for IOS

2013-04-08 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

I haven't seen any mention of this app on this list and I should hate for
anyone to missout on it.

Talking Goggles is an app that uses the IOS device's camera to identify common
objects, pictures and all kinds of text. It offers a vast number of languages
although it is not itself localised into any language other than English. Its
buttons, however, are very simple so localisation is not essential.

Using this app in video mode, I can identify books by just holding the front
cover of the book about a foot away from the iPhone. It takes a matter of
seconds for a book to be recognised and, if the book is in another language and
the app is set to English, it will translate the title.

I've also used Talking Goggles to distinguish between two packaged products
which are identical to the touch. One was artichoke hearts and the other
peppers stuffed with cheese. I set the app to French although quite a lot of
the information on these packages is in German. I got sufficient information
within seconds to be able to distinguish between the two.

This app has five buttons at the bottom of the screen. Starting from the left:
1) Flash - marked Off when off and On when on.
2) Flag - Marked En for English. Double tap it to change the language.
3) Gallery - This is the camera roll.
4) Record or Stop or Camera copy14 - When Video is running, it is labelled
Stop; when Video is selected but not running, it's labelled Record, and when
Still camera is selected, it's labelled Camera copy14.
5) Video Camera or Still Camera - This button is confusing as it is labelled
Video Camera when the Still Camera is selected, and Vice Versa.

This app is self-voicing to take care of the various languages, but in Video
mode, by flicking around the screen, VoiceOver will repeat what has been said.

This app is not free, but it only costs a matter of pennies, euro cents or
whatever.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: crosswords?

2013-04-07 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Will,

The letters I'm talking about are the ones you've put in yourself earlier when
doing, say, the across clues.

I go through the cryptic crossword as quickly as possible putting in the
answers I can get easily, then I go through it again seeing what letters I
already have for the clues I find more difficult. That's the normal way of
doing crosswords.

If you find a clue you just can't get, you can even cheat by clicking the Cheat
button and the answer will be filled in for you.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: crosswords?

2013-04-07 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Will,

The Guardian crosswords are completely accessible. Go to the Guardian's
crossword page and select either quick or cryptic, then choose the Standard
version.

On the crossword page, the clues are lists under level 4 headings. Use Hotspots
to mark your place in the list of clues, then press VO-Space to jump to the
grid. Type in your answer then jump back to the Hotspot. Also, while in the
grid, you can read the clue again with VO-Cmd-number with the number
corresponding to the Hotspot you set. I use Hotspot 0 all the way through the
crossword.

You can look at the letters that are already there by using just the arrow keys
going right for across and down for down.

You can check your answer by going left from the Across clues heading and
clicking the Check button. You then jump back to your Hotspot, do VO-Space and
read the letters using the arrow keys.

It works great.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Red Laser app

2013-04-05 Thread Anne Robertson
Red Laser finds bar codes on cans and boxes just fine, but its database is
sorely lacking for those of us in continental Europe. Digit-Eyes, on the other
hand, has a very extensive database.

Re: Airport Extreme has two IPs.

2013-04-03 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Dónal,

Here's the situation in our set up.

The Airport Express has two IP addresses, 192.168.01.80 and 169.254.02.110 both
of which are local to our own network.

Our base station also has the address 192.168.01.05 in addition, to the address
on the subnet of 169.254.76.236.

The Mybook World backup NAS has the address 192.168.1.129

We've allocated fixed IP addresses to most of the devices that connect
regularly to our network to avoid that irritating message that some other
device is using your IP address.

I don't know if this is of any use to you but at least it shows that our
Airport Express and one of our Airport Extremes both have two IP addresses. We
can't find the other Airport Extreme which probably means it's offline at the
moment.

We need all these devices as we live in a very old house with extremely thick
stone walls!

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Stand Scan

2013-04-02 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Geoff,

So far so good.

The lefthand section has to be folded along the tactile lines to create two
elongated triangles, one along the front edge and the other along the back
edge. Fold these with the shiny side out.

You'll find the same arrangement in the third section along. These sections
with triangular folded bits are the sides of the box and the wide ends of the
triangles support the top.

The section at the far right is the top. It has a round hole in the centre, and
the line of LEDs just in front of a line, a few centimetres from the edge. This
line is where you fold again. You also fold along the line a few centimetres in
from the front edge, and along the line the same distance in from the righthand
edge. These are the sections that fold down from the top to hold the whole
thing rigid.

To put the box together, raise the lefthand side to the vertical, and raise the
back section to meet it. The magnets on the folded triangular section at the
back of the lefthand piece will engage with magnets on the back section. You
have to straighten out the small flap that holds the package together when
folded up.

You now have to lift up the other two sections to form the righthand side and
the top. The righthand side engages with the back in the same way as the
lefthand side, then the top comes over and the three small folded sections
attach to the outside of the back, the lefthand side and the front.

You should now have a box with an open front and a cable emerging from the
upper back lefthand corner.

It takes a bit of time at first, but I can put mine together in under 30
seconds now.

Good luck!

Cheers,

Anne

Hello Dónal,

We've had similar problems with a similar setup. Here's what we did:
1) Change the channel from the default of 11 to the new value of 13 using the
Airport Utility.
2) Activate the 802.11n (5GHz) network on both devices and use drag&drop in the
Network pane of System Preferences to make that the preferred network.

It's been rock solid since we did this.

Explanation provided by Archie since I know nothing about this subject!

Re: Help with web navigation please

2013-03-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Catherine,

If you're navigating the Web in DOM mode, then with Quick Nav on, just the
right arrow will take you to the next element which probably corresponds to a
line or a sentence. Without Quick Nav, this would be VO-Right Arrow. In Groups
mode, you'd have to interact with the group, then press VO-Down Arrow, or with
Quick Nav, set it to Navigation and use the Down Arrow.

As for navigating tables, you have to interact with the table, then VO-Right
arrow will go along a row, and VO-Down Arrow will go down a column. You can
read a whole row with VO-r.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Stand Scan

2013-03-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello dónal,

I have the StandScan Pro which has 15 Leds to provide good lighting. Yes, it's
flimsy, but it folds flat, weighs next to nothing, and works great with my
iPhone 5.

I've tested the StandScan Pro with a double-page from a pretty complexe book
using Prizmo in English with brilliant results. It was virtually perfect apart
from the page headings which are in italics and came out as garbage.

I tried scanning a rectangular box containing a deodorant spray, and
TextGrabber read the information almost perfectly, whereas Prizmo failed at
this task. This time, I was using French.

Yesterday, I demonstrated the StandScan Pro to an IT teacher I was training in
VoiceOver and the Mac. He gave me a flyer to scan and the result was perfect
using TextGrabber. He was so impressed that he called in some colleagues to see
this amazing thing!

So, yes, you have to be careful with the StandScan Pro as it can easily be
damaged, but it isn't a replacement for a flatbed scanner, it's a tool to carry
around in a backpack for those occasions when you really have to get the
information from a printed source quickly.

Below my signature, I'll paste in my description of how to set up a StandScan
Pro. By the Way, it ships with a 9 V battery holder and you can purchase a 12 V
mains adaptor. You really need the 12 V for good results, but you can also add
a battery holder for 8 AA batteries, giving a 12 V output.

The StandScan Pro plus mains adaptor comes to something under $35 which isn't a
lot to spend for such good results.

Cheers,

Anne

Lay the folded StandScan on a table with the small flap away from you.
Open the small flap and fold back the body of the StandScan towards you.
Now the topmost piece should open to the left, and the remaining part will open
to the right but will still be a double thickness.
Open the final piece to the right.
Go to the lefthand piece and you'll find that there is a crease running from
where it joins the second piece to the lefthand edge, a few centimetres in.
Fold along this crease making an elongated triangle.
The same thing can be found on the back edge of the same piece, and on the
front and back edges of the third section.
The piece at the extreme right is the top and you can find the LEDs along its
back edge, and the cable at its back left corner.
Lift the righthand section and lift the lefthand section, then fold over the
flap at the end of the section with the LEDs so that the magnets meet the
magnets on the lefthand section.
A flap of the top section folds down to engage with the magnets on the
triangular pieces, and the piece still lying flat at the back lifts up to meet
the top and the triangular side pieces at the back.
Your StandScan should now look like a large box with an open front and a short
cable coming out of the upper back lefthand corner.

Re: Tracking changes in Pages

2013-03-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Janet,

In general, a Braille display doesn't make Pages more accessible, but in this
case, it helps hugely.

I mainly use my Braille display when translating or proofreading a text as it's
quicker to see capitalisation and so on. This is true for any word-processing
application.

Anne

Tracking changes in Pages

2013-03-16 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

I've just worked out how to manage tracking changes in Pages. You need to use a
Braille display.

In the View menu, show the Comments and changes pane. This will display text
boxes containing the Accept and Reject buttons, plus the name of the person who
made the change and the date and time of the change, followed by the text that
has been changed. There is a text box for each change made on a given page.

Interacting with the page will tell you how many items are on that page, and if
there are more than 3, there's probably a change.

On your Braille display, you'll see the original text attached to the new text.
You can check which text has been changed as it has no text attributes.

I hope this makes sense!

Cheers,

Anne

Re: OCR with Prizmo on iPhone using StandScan Pro

2013-03-14 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Claude,

The StandScan Pro is a foldable box with interior lighting and one open side,
into which you put a document you want to OCR. There's a round hole in the
centre of the top over which you place the camera of your smart phone. This
ensures that the document is well lit and the iPhone can take a good clear
picture for OCR.

I use Prizmo for OCR as it does a very good job in several languages and is
quick.

The StandScan Pro is held together with embedded magnets and packs flat to
about 31 cm by 24 cm and perhaps 2 cm thick. It's made of a sort of glossy
cardboard and is not at all heavy to carry around.

Cheers,

Anne

OCR with Prizmo on iPhone using StandScan Pro

2013-03-13 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

Last week, I received my StandScan Pro, a kind of fold-away box with interior
lighting, designed to be used with smart phones. Here are the results of two
scans, one done using the mains adaptor, and the other using the portable
battery pack.

The scans are double pages from a book whose spine has been bent backwards, but
not cut.

The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living quished (because m p pie then

Parallel in time to the popularity of VLCDs, Dr. Robert Atkins promoted a less
energy-restricted approach to a ketogenic diet. His focus Was on keeping
carbohydrate intake low enough to induce ketosis, but not to severely limit (or
even count) calories. To achieve this, he advised individu.
als to eat protein and fat to satiety while keeping dietary carbohydrates low
enough to maintain positive urine ketones. It was his view that this diet,
including vegetables, limited fruit, and vitamin supplements, could be followed
by the individual outpatient without close medical SUpervi.
sion unless there was a pre-existing complicating condition like diabetes or
hypertension. For most patients, however, the Atkins diet tended to be only a
temporary sojourn into nutritional ketosis, whether for want of sweets or want
of approbation from their friends and doctor.
n
,
owever, in these parallel few decades of the VLCD and Atldns diet, hundreds of
studies were done, and we learned a great deal about carbohydrate restriction.
Among these lessons are many which can contribute to the safe and sustainable
use of carbohydrate restricted diets going forward.
Counting Calories vs Carbs It was Dr. Atkins' contention that when most
carbohydrate was removed from the diet, heavy people lose weight more
effectively than by classic balanced calorie restriction. The mechanism was
(and remains) hotly debated. Claims of reduced metabolic efficiency during
nutritional ketosis remain unproven. Among other points against this is the
fact that Steve Phinney's bike racers produced the same power output in testing
0~ a stationary bike using the same oxygen consumption after adapting to the
Inuit diet compared to their test on a high carb diet[23], leaving little room
for metabolic inefficiency in this group of subjects.
But this argument over the mechanism of weight loss is an acaderoic straw.man,
In study after study, over the first 3-6 months, people r~a"
ClinicaIUse°fCarb°hydrateRestricti°n: VeryL°wCal°rieandLowCarbohydrateDiets
donaized to a low carb diet eaten to satiety lose more Weight and more body fat
than those assigned to a low fat, calorie restricted diet. A credible mechanism
to explain this is not hard to find - carbohydrates in our diet may offer a
short-term sense of increased energy, but they offer little in the way of
functional satiety.
~e best example of this effect was reported by Dr. Guenther Boden[45] in an
inpatient study of obese type-2 diabetics. After a week of eating a balanced
diet to satiety, the subjects were given a low carbohydrate diet consisting of
most of the same foods, with the exception that they were asked to limit their
total daily carbohydrate intake to 20 grams. Over the next two weeks, their
spontaneous nutrient intakes were carefully measured. Interestingly, the
subject's average daily energy intake dropped from 3100 to 2100 Calories, and
this was all due to the 'missing' carbs.
Despite having the choice to eat more, the protein and fat intakes of these
subjects remained relatively constant. And despite this 1000 Calorie per day
deficit, their reported hunger, satisfaction, and energy levels did not change
appreciably. What did change was their diabetes control - dramatically for the
better. For more on this topic, see Chapter 15.
But this study was just 2 weeks long. What happens in the longer term? Well,
the process of full metabolic adaptation to a low carbohydrate diet takes up to
6 weeks, so for the first few months, we would expect wellbeing and function to
get better. But after many months and a major degree of weight loss, it is a
normal response of the human body to try to limit its losses. This is typically
achieved by eating more, but what? If dietary carbohydrate intolerance led to
the choice of a low carbohydrate diet at the outset, why lift that restriction?
In particular, why add back calories that promote fat storage but do not
provide functional satiety? Accepting that protein is good for us only in
moderation, the answer is fat (see Chapters 2 and 16). How much fat should you
add as you approach Weight maintenance.~ The simple answer: "let satiety rule",

Hello everyone,

Where do you get the idea that docx files cannot be opened with pages? I'm
currently working on just such a file in Pages, and do so regularly. I suspect
it all depends on the complexity of the file. I'm dealing with fairly
straightforward stuff and rarely have any problems other than missing fonts.

Or are you talking about Pages on IOS? I wouldn't use that for serious work
anyway.

Re: iWork programs and accessibility

2013-03-06 Thread Anne Robertson
You can actually read tables in pages with VO using one of two methods. There
is a command to convert the table to text in the Format menu but you have to
locate the table first.

The other method is to select the table, then open the inspector, select Wrap,
Then, in the object placement section choose floating. The table then shows up
as an additional item on the page and you can edit it.

As for Apple doing something about Pages accessibility, I've been pestering for
years about this and not much has changed.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: iWork programs and accessibility

2013-03-06 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Phil,

I wish you luck with the one-to-one training, but I fear the trainer will not
be familiar enough with VoiceOver to understand how to manage iWork. You have
to do a lot of interacting and bringing the mouse to the VoiceOver cursor and
doing a simulated mouse click.

It all sounds very complicated but it's really quite easy once you get used to
it. I use Pages regularly in my work as a translator, and I use Numbers for
very simple spreadsheets. I've also used Keynote and it's pretty accessible.

Hotspots are very useful in iWork and its advisable to hide as many objects in
the window as possible to reduce the clutter.

Cheers,

Anne

Hello Josh,

You need a scanner or a very good camera for ABBYY FineReader or any other OCR
program for the Mac unless you're getting image PDFs that need OCR.

If you're looking for an OCR app for the iPhone, I'd strongly recommend Prizmo
or Perfect OCR although other people also recommend Text Detective. With any of
these, your biggest problem is making sure there's enough light and holding the
iPhone as still as possible when taking the picture.

Re: ABBYY fine reader express.

2013-02-18 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Dónal,

You can now scan multiple pages into one file with ABBYY FineReader. However,
if you have a lot to scan, it's quicker to use VueScan for the scanning part as
it can be set to scan multiple pages automatically. With FineReader, you have
to click the Resume button then switch windows back to the scanner window and
click to scan again.

If I'm doing a whole book, I use VueScan, and then it passes off to FineReader
for the OCR. But if I'm only scanning a few pages, I just use FineReader.

VueScan has to be bought from the developer and costs $39 for one year, or $79
for life. You can use it for free, but it leaves a watermark.

The website for VueScan is:
www.hamrick.com

Cheers,

Anne

Hello Dónal,

ABBYY FineReader is definitely worth it. It's the best OCR for Mac and can
handle three languages in one document. It's also really simple to use.

Re: Questions about pages-urgent

2013-02-10 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Marcos,

To check on the line spacing, select all (Cmd-a) and open the inspector. Make
sure you're on the Text inspector with the Text option selected. Navigate right
until you hear Color & Alignment, then navigate down to Line. Below this you'll
find a percentage and to the right of that, if you're in double line spacing,
it will say 2.

To change the font, press Cmd-t to open the Fonts palette. Jump to the first
table using VO-Cmd-t and select the collection list. Select All Fonts in this
table, then jump to the next table and type the letters "ti" to get quickly to
Times. Times new Roman is the next one down for me.

Having selected the font you want, just press Cmd-t to hide the Fonts palette
again. Press one of the arrow keys to unselect all the text and check that the
font has changed using VO-t.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Searching in Numbers

2013-02-09 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello David,

I'm glad you find my little trick useful. I don't use Numbers much, but we're
teaching iWork to a student at the moment, so I've been brushing up on it.

I'd love to be able to write the kind of guide you're talking about, but it
takes a lot of time and concentration. I'd also have to do it in French, too,
as most of my work is in French.

I'm most familiar with Pages as I use it for my translation work and I've used
Keynote a bit, and we taught Keynote to a totally blind person a couple of
years ago.

There's so much work to be done and so little time in which to do it.

However, thank you for your kind words.

Cheers,

Anne

Searching in Numbers

2013-02-09 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

I just discovered this trick for searching for specific content in Numbers.

• Set a hotspot on the table without interacting with it;
• Press Cmd-f to open the Search field;
• Stop interacting until you've stopped interacting with the scroll area;
• Navigate down to the next scroll area and set another hotspot;
• Press Cmd-f to hide the Search area.

Now, when you need to search for something, just press Cmd-f, enter the string
and press Return. Go to the hotspot you sett on the Search area and select the
result you want. Bring the mouse and press VO-Shift-Space then jump to the
hotspot you set on the table. Just interact and you'll be on the selected cell.

This method removes the need to turn off cursor tracking, and minimises the
amount of interacting and uninteracting you have to do.

I tried this from all over a spreadsheet with over 400 lines and it worked
every time.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Navigating pages with VoiceOver

2013-02-08 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello George,

Here's a description of how to use Pages on the iPhone. This is information I
put together from various sources but I haven't used it much myself.

Cheers,

Anne

Pages on IOS
You can read and type text. Be aware, however, that rather than showing the
entire document in one edit field, Pages breaks documents up in to multiple
edit fields in such a way that each edit field corresponds to roughly one page
of text. You'll see two or three of these "pages"/edit fields on screen at once
and must use the vertical scrolling gestures to scroll through the pages. So,
when you move to the top/bottom of an edit field, or select all text in an edit
field, you aren't moving to the top/bottom of or selecting the entire document
but rather manipulating the current "page". Thus, if you wanted to make some
formatting change that applied to, say, a couple of pages, you'd have to select
relevant text from the first edit field in question, apply the formatting
change, select text in the next relevant edit field, apply formatting change,
and so on.

You can accessibly change the font used. After you select text using typical VO
selection commands, activate the Info button located in the upper right-hand
portion of the screen. The safest way to find this without losing your
selection is to approach the status bar from the top and locate the time, then
slide your finger down to Info and tap with a second finger to activate it.
Then go straight to the bottom portion of the screen without touching anything
in between, and you'll find the Text Options pane. You'll see formatting items;
activate the icon labeled with the current point/font info, then activate the
icon called Font, CurrentFontName, (where CurrentFontName is the actual font
name of course) and pick a different font. The buttons to apply effects such as
Bold, Italic, Underline, etc. also work. You can also change the point size by
flicking up or down. Once done making those changes, you can return to the text
by sliding a finger up the left-hand side of the scree
 n.
Documents are saved automatically as you compose them, so you never save them
manually. Emailing works fine; from upper-right portion of screen, select Tools
> Share and Print > Email Document > button corresponding to file format you
wish the attachment to be in, then a regular Mail window opens for you to fill
in relevant details.
If you add a new document and select the blank document template in order to
add a blank document, its name will just be "blank", and the next blank
document you create would be called "blank1", etc. There is a Rename button
next to the name of each document.
Creating folders is tricky. You need to have good spatial awareness since you
need to slide the document onto the folder. When you first create a folder, you
double tap and hold on one document then slide it onto another. This creates a
folder called Folder which you can rename in the same way as for a file name.

Re: Word processing software

2013-02-01 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello George,

Your Mac comes with Mail for your e-mail, Safari for the internet, Calendar for
your calendars, Contacts for your address book, Messages for sending SMSs,
TextEdit for basic word processing, iTunes for media, and many other programs.

The Apple equivalent of Office consists of Pages for word processing, Numbers
for spreadsheets and Keynote for presentations.

You can read and write documents in Word format using TextEdit but you do not
get all the features by any means. However, for reading Word documents,
TextEdit is the most convenient.

Hello George,

You can open MS Word documents with TextEdit or Pages. I work with Word
documents all the time as a freelance translator and I use Pages since it keeps
most of the formatting correct. The only problems I have are with missing fonts
and a few anomlies in the way text boxes and tables are handled. However, the
fonts problem is minor and the layout problems are rare in what I do.

Re: Using a second language on the Mac

2013-01-20 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Hatch,

If all you want to do is be able to read in French, you just need to download
one of the French voices that are available free with OS x. You have a choice
of Virginie, Audrey, Thomas and Sébastien. To get them, you open VoiceOver
Utility (VO-F8) and go to the Speech category. Select the Voices tab, then
navigate right as far as Voice, then down to the Default voice pop up button.
Press VO-Space and go down to Customize …
and press Return. Type the word "French" into the search field then go right
to the table. You'll find the French voices at the top of the list. Interact
with the table and press VO-space on the voice you want to download. Click OK
and the voice will be downloaded.

You can then select your French voice using VO-Cmd-Arrow keys whenever you like.

Cheers,

Anne

Hello George,

I can't help you with the visual aspect of Mac OS x, but for the VO commands,
although you can't change them, you can assign any of them to one or more of
the commanders. You can also assign a different key to serve as the VO key,
thereby liberating the Control and Option keys on the left side of a laptop
computer.

This will all make sense once you have your Mac in front of you.

Cheers,

Anne

As the Mac Access Dot Net administrators, we do our very best to ensure that
the Mac-Access E-Mal list remains malware, spyware, Trojan, virus and
worm-free. However, this should in no way replace your own security strategy.
