RE: [MI-L] MapInfo Discovery

2006-10-26 Thread Caroline Hilton
Note there's a big difference between MapInfo's Discovery and Encom's
Discover - the former is a MapXtreme product (I think), the latter is a
geologist's add-on to produce scaled output, drill sections, geochem
analysis and much more. Many people (understandably) confuse the names!

Which one were you interested in?

It is basically a cut down version of MapInfo MapXtreme Windows. As far as I
know, it uses HahtSite, an OEM application environment which is pretty
outdated (I think it doesn't even exist anymore).

[MI-L] MapInfo changing table Projections: ED50

2006-10-25 Thread Caroline Hilton
I'm working on a Turkish project for which I've been using the projection
UTM ED50, Zone 36.

However, my tables are all re-setting themselves from this UTM ED50
projection (ED50 in the top drop-down menu, Zone 36 in the lower option) to
Turkish Coordinate Systems (ED50) Zone 33. This means that points I create
using eastings and northings aren't displaying at those values, but are
offset by some 30km to the west of where they should be.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

I realise that I could set the Turkish projection as the base table
projection (although I'm not currently sure that is the correct projection,
as I was told by my client it's European ED50, Zone 36), but why would
MapInfo assume it's a different projection to the one I set?

Thanks in advance

[MI-L] Indian UTM Projections

2006-10-17 Thread Caroline Hilton
Hi

A client of mine is starting a new project, in India, and wants to use what
he believes is the standard Indian UTM projection. He calls it something
along the lines of Everest Grid UTM India-Bangladesh.

Does anyone know if this is the same as the India Polyconic (Everest)
coordinate system in MapInfo? Or if there's another one I should use?
There's the India (WGS84), but I couldn't find any others, so wondered if
there is a different one I should add.

Thanks in advance

[MI-L] Raster images in different coordinate systems

2006-06-12 Thread Caroline Hilton
Hello

I am currently working in an area which straddles the border of 2 UTM
coordinate systems.

Working with raster images registered in these systems, they don't quite
meet, with offsets, gaps, overlaps and even different sizes where they
should match up.

Does anyone know how MapInfo displays the images in the same window? i.e.
how one raster would be warped compared to the other one in the map
window? Or how MapInfo deals with the second raster to be placed in the
window when it's a different coordinate system? I know the map window
projection can't be changed once a raster appears, and that it takes the
projection of the initial raster, but what does it do with the second one?

Cheers

Thanks to Mats E who replied so well that a workspace can in no way be

wondered if there might be a way of saving window as... something other

and I'm not even sure rasters can be imported into AutoCAD.

Hi Caroline,

We just posted the following message last week or so regarding free
imagery (global coverage) and tools available for making beautiful base
maps in MapInfo. Sorry to those who read our message more than once.

//

Dear All,

If you are interested in using free Landsat ETM+ imagery, and free image
band combination tool for making beautiful base maps or image backdrops
in GIS, here we are pleased to inform you that we are currently
distributing a free, advanced, and fully functional image band
combination tool. It is included in the free version of HighView (an
advanced image fusion and pan-sharpening program). The free band
combination module has the following
features:

- Reads images in raw raster format, ENVI's *.img/*.hdr format, Idrisi
32's *.rst/*.drc format, and GeoTIFF format; outputs results in 24-bit
BMP format and/or GeoTIFF format, which can be readily and conveniently
used as backdrops in major GIS software programs, such as MapInfo and
ArcGIS. It is simple, efficient, and powerful. No image analysis
knowledge is required, and anyone can use it.

- Works for various 8-bit imagery, including vast, publicly available
Landsat TM/ETM+ imagery distributed by the GLCF (Global Land Cover
Facility, www.landcover.org), ASTER, MODIS, SPOT, etc.

- No limitation on image size.

- Various options of linear and nonlinear image stretches.

- No expiry date.

- ...

Some examples can be seen at
http://www.geosage.com/highview/gallery_athens_etm+.html

A free version can be downloaded at
http://www.geosage.com/highview/download.html

MI-L Rectifying stereo aerial photos

2004-09-06 Thread Caroline Hilton
Hi Listers

A client of mine has purchased some hard-copy aerial stereo-photos and
wants to scan them for use as a base layer in MapInfo.

These photos are not rectified in any way for digital use, as they are
designed for viewing in stereoscopic pairs.

Obviously, the client is concerned about the distortion at the edges of
the images - he is planning to use 5 photos for the area concerned. Once
registered there is about 150m distortion at each photo edge. Placing
vector layers onto the images is obviously going to be a problem as
registration will be different for each photo image, so they will not
currently display properly in MapInfo.

Is there any software which will rectify the photos? (is this
ortho-rectifying?). Or would specific rectified digital images need to
be purchased for mosaicing in MapInfo?

I have only used digital images, and have not tried using stereographic
images for this purpose, so cannot advise.

Any advice you may have for using these images in MapInfo would be most
welcome. I will forward it to my client.

Thanks

SUM: MI-L Rectifying stereo aerial photos

2004-09-06 Thread Caroline Hilton
Thanks to everyone for their advice. What rapid responses from a great
group of people.

Most people suggest ER Mapper will do the job of orthorectifying the
images, other suggestions have been ERDAS, Intergraph ZI or Aerial 5
developed by Bradford University.

However, most people also suggest that it would be much better to
purchase properly ortho-rectified images as they won't be too expensive
compared to the time and effort (and money) spent using the various
software programs to do the job.

I have passed all the information on to the client, and will see which
they go for.

Thanks for all your help

Hi Caroline

You are going to hit a big problem very rapidly of ground height and the
high probability of the original photographs not being genuinely
vertical. The best solution for you is to get the client to purchase
orthorectified images (Distortions due to ground height, camera
attitudes and lens removed and not cheap) that will be at a constant
scale, such as UK perspectives, et al, imagery. This imagery can then be
fed backwards through the relevant height dtm of the area to produce
stereo imagery that is georeferenced. However any vector data that you
wish to superimpose will also have to be converted to a raster format
and height distorted so that it will lie on the stereo image, rather
than float in a misregistered manner along side the stereo pair.

I attach a cheap and cheerful stereo image of an area in Dorset,
(subsampled to 5m or so) that illustrates a stereo pair. Note that the
image is copyrighted to EN and UKp

Software used in this case is Intergraph's ZI package.

Good luck

Shoot me if I'm being a little naïve here, but can't you just use
ALT-Prnt scrn to capture the map windows? This is what I use all the

I'm using at the moment), then save as whatever image type you need to
dump into other documents.

Is this a different result to Save Window As...?

Ash/Bill

I've put up this link a few times now but I may not have seemed directly
relevant -

Grab the contents of the MapInfo window using the HWND into a Picture
object
- theres example code on the Micrososft
site at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q161299.

This is an API call that gives you a picture object with the complete
map in it - instantaneously. No leak.

The situation Ash describes ie memory leak on Save WIndow was the reason
I ended up going down this route, although my requirement was just for a
snapshot of the screen including highlighting during processing in a VB
app.

If you hoick the contents of the map window into a picture object in VBA
I presume you can then use an Access method or another API call to
produce your image file -

Hi all,

Can anyone suggest simple, robust software to run on PalmOS or CE/PocketPC handheld
devices that would somehow read MapInfo.TAB files directly?? I am looking for something
that will allow me to click on the house polygon in the cadastral layer and bring up a
customised form to enter data seamlessly into a relational database and allow me to
query
that info easily in Mapinfo back in the office.

I want our teams to be able to do this in a non-wireless manner (ie: have all data
residing on the handheld) with occasional synchronisation as we work in remote areas
sometimes.

This application will be used to collect field survey information about mosquito
breeding
etc... during dengue fever outbreaks in north Queensland, Australia, and therefore must
not be labour intensive.

If anyone has any suggestions, they would be gratefully recieved!

Thanks, will SUM.

In my experience, using a HP650C, you can create two different
plot files, an HPGL2 file and an RTL file. These files have nothing
to do with the file extension you give them. When you check the
box print to file... and when the file location dialog box pops up
asking you for a filename and location to save the file, it defaults to
a *.prn extension. You can change this or leave this as be. If you
want you can put an *.rtl extension on there. But to force the print
driver to create a RTL file, you need to have the process in
computer... option checked to ...process in computer. This is
accessed from the MapInfo File...Print command, select the
Properties button next to your plotter name, click on the Advanced
tab, and then check the process in computer option. Go back to the
main print command screen and besure to check the print to file
option. This will now create an RTL file, with any filename and
extension you want. An HPGL2 file is created by normally printing
to file, without checking on the process in computer option.

The RTL file created will generate a large file, but for me, is the only
method to get large raster imagery (especially transparent rasters)
to print correctly.

Hope this helps,
Carl

Subject: MI-L rtl file output from HP750c?

 Hi all

I have been asked to provide a print file to a client in rtl format,
but as far as I can see my HP750c driver only produces .prn files.
Does anyone know how to produce an rtl file (which I believe is a
raster, rather than vector, format file)?

 Thanks
 Caroline

Re: MI-L rtl file output from HP750c?

2002-11-12 Thread Caroline Hilton
Thanks Ryan. I downloaded the driver (which said rtl) from the website a
couple of days ago, only when I installed it, it didn't seem to have any rtl
options, just a prn option. I am using Win98, and that page is for win95.
I'll keep trying as the hp site keeps kicking me out today

cheers

Check this out:

It looks like HP may have a specific RTL driver you need to install.

Hope this helps!

Fw: MI-L Update column

2002-10-31 Thread Caroline Hilton
Brian

Not sure if this is what you're after, but you could try it:

1 - in one single object for each different value in column A, add the text
you want in column B.
2 - SQL select where Column B , grouped by column B, into query 1
3 - update column B in original table using data from query 1, where
Table.column A = query1.column A

This means you don't have to do individual queries for each listing in
column A.

Does this make sense? I hope so. I do it often.

Hi Suzi

The GBM MapLinker software I mentioned to you earlier this month (regarding
your river systems document) should do this for you. If you would like an
free 30-day evaluation copy to see how it can help, please let me know.
You'll be able to test it on your own data, and see if it's what you're

Please see www.geobasemap.com or www.pelicangeographics.co.uk for further

I have around 350 graphs within 6 Excel workbooks displaying cross-sections
of rivers. I have saved the associated data and graph for each cross-section
on separate sheets within these workbooks. All cross-section has been put
into one tab file. I would ideally like to be able to click on each
cross-section and link to the sheet that is specific to the cross-section

whether this is possible? I could save the graphs individually, but I would
like to avoid this if possible. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

MI-L Graphics problems in MI7

2002-09-11 Thread Caroline Hilton

Hello all

I am having trouble with my display (GDI apparently) in MapInfo 7.
Does anyone know if MI7 uses a lot more graphics memory than older versions?

The problem occurs when I have more than one application open - this did
not used to happen with older versions.

I am writing a training manual, and as such have MS Word, MI, and Excel open
at the same time. Norton keeps telling me I'm running out of GDI resources,
even though the files I have open in MI are both few, and small.
I did have a similar trouble previously with large raster files not
reallocating
graphics memory on panning, but that was fixed by the recent patch.

I'm using MI7 and Win98.

Thanks

Re: MI-L More than 1 hotlink

2002-09-05 Thread Caroline Hilton

Hi Jamie

Have a look at www.geobasemap.com - they have an excellent product called
ImageLinker which links any documents to GIS objects through a database, and
the links are based on an object ID in the GIS table, not a path, so you can
have as many links as you like and you won't have a messy MI table.

Look at the web page for details, or if you're in Europe, let me know your
details and I'll send you an evaluation.

Is there a way to reference both documents on the same hotlink

Re: MI-L Image catalog attached to map points?

2002-08-13 Thread Caroline Hilton

Hi Jay

GBM ImageLinker, by Exa-min (www.geobasemap.com), seems to be exactly what
you're after. It attaches images via an ID, so as long as you have some sort
of location ID relating to an object in your MapInfo table, if you add the
same ID to the catalogue in ImageLinker, clicking on your object will bring
up a filtered display of all the images associated with that object. You can
then double-click on the image to enlarge it.

For more details, see our website (details below), or contact me for a free
30-day evaluation.

Has anyone run across a good program to display a set of images associated
with a point on a map?
We have 10-12 images associated with each point, so opening an instance of
a map window or spawning
a viewer for each picture is cumbersome. I'd like something similar to how
paintshop pro displays images
in a browser and you click on each one to expand if you like.

I agree. I am having to save my tables after each new object is added, just
in case (I am working with a 250mb raster...). Sometimes MI crashes, other
times the computer restarts itself. Either way, it's a pain. Might revert to

SUM: MI-L MapInfo to ArcInfo

2002-06-24 Thread Caroline Hilton

Last week I asked for advice on converting from MI to ArcINFO format.
I had lots of useful replies, and would like to thank everyone for their
advice. Most of you said to use ArcLink or Universal Translator, but I am
using MI v6.0 and this feature isn't available in UT, so I will use ArcLink.
Some people suggested exporting to .shp files, which ArcInfo can read, but
as my brief is specifically to use e00 files, the following advice was
particularly useful:

Martin Higham said: ArcLink will do a pretty good job at building topology
if you export a polygon layer. With
shp this is just an extra step you would need to do once the data is in
Arc/Info.
Be aware that text objects don't exist ArcView so text objects will be
converted to attributed points if you go the shp route. Also, you'll have to
find some other way of translating all your symbology (object styles) out of
MapInfo, since shp or E00 contain just geography and geometry information.

George Smith said: If you are going to the latest version (ArcGIS 8.x) just
make shape files with Utranslator. You will lose all style info. To make a
geodatabase their new format you would have to have some form of Arc and
FME, but you don't need to make that as shapes will work.

Deepak Kaul said: You can use the FME from www.safe.com to convert from one
format to another. Though you need to buy it. If you just want to convert to
shp format, use the Universal Translator provided with MI to convert the TAB
file to shp file. There is no loss in doing the conversions and you need not
take any extra care while creating your TAB files.
But do make a mention to your client about the projection system of the shp
files you created for them, as shp files don't contain the projection
information unless it is accompanied by the .prj file (the projection files)
though it is not a mandatory files
Andy Canfield also suggested using FME, for transferring to .shp files.

Bill Wemple said: What you need to keep in mind with going to ArcInfo format
is that ArcInfo is EXTREMELY strict with its topology. If you are creating
data in MapInfo and you have digitized\drawn it somewhat haphazardly (e.g.:
overshoots, bowtie polygons, self-intersections, etc) and you try to
translate it to ArcInfo *.e00 format, ArcLink will throw it back at you
since it must adhere to ArcInfo's strict topology requirements.

The translation of the data has not been carried out yet, but as it'll be a
while before I get it from the client I thought it best to summarise now.

Thanks once again to you all

MI-L MapInfo to ArcInfo

2002-06-18 Thread Caroline Hilton

Hi all

Does anyone have any advice on converting from MI to ArcInfo format? I have
a client who needs to do this, but who doesn't have access to ArcInfo
themselves, so would need to do it in MI. I've looked through the archives,
but not really found anything of use.

Is there anything to bear in mind whilst creating tables in MI, if one is
intending to convert to ArcInfo once the tables are finished? (Is the
ArcInfo format .shp files? or is that just ArcView?). Is it really as simple
as using arclink? or would we lose any info during this process?

Thanks for any help you can provide

You could use the Hotlink facility, but if you have a number of images/files
to link to any particular object you may want to look at Exa-Min's
ImageLinker, a user-friendly and relatively inexpensive way of linking to
files of all types with the advantage of adding metadata to these files.

Hi folks,

I was told about a program that apparently comes from Australia that wrapped
up a lot of useful programs into one package but I can't remember the name.
With this program you could export workspaces and all the tables associated
with it to one folder so that you could copy it onto a CD etc... another
things that it could do is make a selection by colour (although I already
have a mbx program that does that) and a lot of other nifty things. I
thinks it sells for around $1400 Canadian (I think).

Can anyone help me out with the name?

Re: MI-L Microsoft access and mapinfo

Russell

I know that you are familiar with MapBasic, but it may be worth your while
looking at the add-on program 'MapLinker', which does what you have asked
and may well save you a lot of time and frustration in programming.
MapLinker opens the relevant Access form when you click on a MapInfo object,
or vice versa (with a 'find GIS' button on the Access form). MapLinker also
links directly to other applications, and even to other pre-defined MapInfo
windows, so you're not just limited to Access.
For details, please look at the Pelican website (details below). A 30-day
MapLinker evaluation is available.

MI-L Press Release: Compass Metadata Tool available in Europe.

2002-01-24 Thread Caroline Hilton

Hello all. I hope you don't mind my posting this notice, as it may be of
interest to you if you are in Europe and looking for a metadata tool.
Thanks.

Caroline.

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release

Compass Metadata Management Software Now Available In Europe From Pelican
GeoGraphics Ltd

PELICAN GEOGRAPHICS LTD is proud to announce that it has recently been
awarded European reseller status for Compass, the popular MapInfo data and
metadata management system from Meridian GIS. Already widely used in its
native Australia, Compass streamlines and simplifies the management of the
increasingly large amounts of data required by today's organisations, by
storing comprehensive metadata in a searchable catalogue system.

Compass will catalogue and maintain Tables, Saved Queries, Workspaces, ER
Mapper Image Web Server and Oracle 8i connections. The catalogues can be
filtered on user-defined categories, or searched either hierarchically or
spatially, and the results presented to the user in a logical, intuitive
interface with corresponding metadata. The need to navigate through complex
directory structures to open tables is made redundant, multiple datasets can
be selected and previewed, and informed decisions about which data to use
can be made.

Compass is available in 2 versions; Administrator, which enables catalogue
maintenance, and Navigator, for data viewing and searching data. Both are
now available throughout Europe from Pelican GeoGraphics Ltd
(www.pelicangeographics.co.uk). A 30-day trial is available for download at
http://www.meridian-gis.com.au/.

Re: MI-L Hot Linking

2002-01-15 Thread Caroline Hilton

Hi

A tool has recently been developed which hot-links to digital images, in
just the way you want. It also allows you to add metadata to your images,
and acts as a database so you can view, catalogue and search all your images
even when you don't have MI open (or if you don't even use MI!), then link
from them to MI Pro as and when you need to.

It's called ImageLinker, and is from Exa-min in Australia, but should be
available from your local GeoBasemap reseller (see www.geobasemap.com). You
can get a free 30-day evaluation copy by contacting Exa-min, or from me if
you're in Europe. The software isn't expensive (about US$300) and is
extremely useful. See the Pelican GeoGraphics website for more info.

Re: MI-L transparent layers....

2001-12-19 Thread Caroline Hilton

Hi.

In my experience (and this may not happen to everyone!), transparent fills
with the background shading off, as
John suggested, are great for display, but can play havoc with your
printing,
particularly if you've got a large image. The transparent fill seems to make
the print job infinitely larger than it should be, which may mean your
printer won't be able to handle it or it will take forever to print.

good luck

Lai

One way to handle this would be to make the top polygon transparent by
using the Region Style function. Select Region Style from the Options Menu,
set the region style as a hatch pattern and give it a distinctive color.
Then uncheck the Background box that eliminates any background shading and
that should do the trick. The bottom polygon should be visible through the
hatch pattern in the top polygon.

There's a 'screen print' shareware program, called Snag-it, which allows you

Subject of the message: Re:

Attachment Pics.DOC.scr was Quarantined for the following reasons:
Virus W32.Badtrans.B@mm was found.

One of the senders had a subject line MapInfo-L. However, I know the list
does not allow attachments to be sent. I think the user had me in their
sent items list and the Virus must have been able to send from this list.
The Norton Web page has the following description:

Symantec Security Response is currently tracking two threats. Both threats
have a rating of Category 4 (Severe). W32.Badtrans.B@mm is a MAPI worm that
emails itself out as one of several different filenames. W32.Aliz.Worm is an
SMTP mass mailer worm that can be executed just by reading or previewing the
file.

The virus did try to launch from the preview without opening the file. If
you have not updated your virus profiles for your virus protection software
lately you may want to do it soon.

MI-L Problem Building SQL on Access database

2001-09-11 Thread Caroline Hilton

I am having trouble building queries on ODBC links, and I wonder if anyone
can shed any light on this for me?

Having gone through the setup for ODBC, making the table containing the
coordinates mappable etc, and opening it in MapInfo, I am trying to use the
BuildSQL tool which comes with MI. The trouble is, whenever I click on the
'tables' button which should list the tables in the database, I am presented
with
'`00`.`Alter
ation`' instead of what I assume should be 'database_name.alteration' (where
the alteration is the table I'm trying to select from). This has happened
with all of the database files I've tried to link to, and obviously when the
SQL is built using this it gives an error when executed.

Anyone seen it before?

cheers

Re: MI-L linking tables

2001-07-26 Thread Caroline Hilton

Hi Dan

You could avoid having duplicate datasets at all by using a hotlinking
program,
such as MapLinker. Basically it was designed to do what you want to do, and
it means that you can use your ID in your mappable field to link to a
database record with the same ID. Therefore if you click on the house in MI,
the corresponding access table will open and give you all the information
you require, thus removing the need for duplicate information and allowing
it to be updated whenever you need to. Unlike MI hotlinks, it also lets you
link back from access to the corresponding map object in MI, and you can
link numerous file types to a single map object (eg. a photo, an access
form, a word document etc)

If you are interested, contact your local reseller (details at
www.geobasemap.coom) or have a look at our website
(www.pelicangeographics.co.uk).

I should explain my situation a little better. Lets say table1 represent
residential homes, one record for each house. Each house has a unique ID
number.
In table2 (not mappable) is a list of occupants or residence names and
other
information about that occupant. Each record represents one occupant. It
has no
unique field but does contain the house ID number of the home in which the
occupant lives. Therefore if a house has 3 occupants, 3 records will have
the
same ID. What I would like to do is keep these tables seperate but be
able to
click on a house and have the information in table1 show up in the INFO
window
and also be able to see the information associated with each occupant in
that
house which comes from table2. Maybe this isn't possible without joining
the two
tables and creating one big flat table?

 Dan

I have two tables, one with objects , the other with information about the
 objects (not mappable)
They both have a common ID field. Is it possible to keep these tables
separate
 in
MapInfo and be able to link them together so that when you click on an
object
the information in the second table will also be shown in the mapinfo
window?

I'm running MI 6.0 and do not have MapBasic.

 TIA

Re: MI-L Ver una foto ligada a un objeto

2001-05-29 Thread Caroline Hilton

Hola Alberto

You could use a product called MapLinker to link your photos to your MapInfo
tables. MapLinker is a third party software which works with version 4.0
onwards. details can be found at www.geobasemap.com (where it is referred
to, sometimes, as Images+) or at www.pelicangeographics.co.uk

MapLinker not only allows pictures/photos to be linked to MapInfo tables,
but allows many other applications to be linked (word documents,
spreadsheets etc). It also allows you to add metadata to the MapInfo tables
and linked files.

If you need any further information, contact [EMAIL PROTECTED], and I
am sure they will help you.

I have had a similar in the past, where I import an excel file and not only

Annoying to say the least. It doesn't happen every time, but used to happen

any ideas?

As the title suggests, upon importing an Excel file, numeric fields are
shortened from 6 to 4 decimal places. Yipes. Never has happened to me
before, though I've performed the operation many times. I've triple-checked
that the fields are formatted correctly in Excel (to the point of exporting
the file as text and reimporting it to Excel), and that there are no
extraneous characters in the nether regions of the spreadsheet. I'm using
MI6 and select the Use Row Above Selected Range... option.

I know that I could simply import the text file mentioned above, but that
doesn't solve the fundamental problem. Are there other subtleties to
importing spreadsheets that I have overlooked?

Doubly support this solution. The export to a delimited ASCII file (we use

Perhaps it's best just to export the excel file to a comma delimited or a
pipe delimited text file and then open in MapInfo. Works fine. It
happened
to me all the time, with excel. Furthermore, for some excel versions, it
sometime cuts off any rows that exceeded a certain number of rows. Text
file usually works around that problem.

Re: MI-L searching on grid reference

2001-04-06 Thread Caroline Hilton

I would say use the 'change view' option on the right mouse button. I think
it is in standard MI, although correct me if I'm wrong as I do use some
add-ons. If you click the 'change view' option, you get asked for either the
zoom level you want, or the centre of the window. Type in your coordinates
and the farm you want should come up in the centre of your view.

Hello all,

This seems like it should be a very simple task, but I've got that 'end of

How can I zoom to a specific grid reference? I can do it roughly by
following the 'cursor location' and zooming in in stages, but I would like,
ideally to be able to run a query on a grid ref. say 450322 544345 (UK
national grid) and zoom to that point on the map.
It's all to do with finding farms with suspect foot and mouth cases, and all
we've got is a grid reference.

Re: MI-L selecting against block points

2001-03-28 Thread Caroline Hilton

Eric
I'm not sure I understand what you're doing. Are you just trying to select
all the points which lie within a single polygon? If so, you can use the
'boundary select' tool (the one to the left of the deselct tool' in MI6),
which allows you to click in a region, and it
selects all the objects within that polygon. If it is not selecting the
correct table, then use the ctrl key to select objects from a different
layer, in the usual way.

If I have misunderstood you, then this probably won't help...

drive-time polygons..

I have the block point table which is fine
just large (the .map part is 139 MB)

Trying to select the block points in a polygon
takes a really long time, though.. any
suggestions ?

(I could break the block points out by state
and put a 20-mile buffer around each one
have a first step that determines which state
the polygon is in.. blah blah. but I haven't
given up on the simple way..)

Is there much of a speed difference using
the different spatial operations like Intersect,
Contains, Within ? Will having everything
specified in the same projection going to make
a big difference? (i.e. the block points are in
NAD 83 and polygons may be created
without a defined projection, just lat/lon)

Is there some third-party point-in-polygon
engine that might be faster?

TIA!

Re: MI-L Text Scaling

2001-03-19 Thread Caroline Hilton

Martyn

MapInfo is notorious for bad text sizing - the final size depends on the
zoom of the window at which you originally set the text size. The way round
it is to consider one of the third-party add-ons, which set the size of text
for a specified final output scale. However, the only one I know of which
does it is Discover, and it's only worth getting if you want to use some of
the other functions as it is a bit expensive to consider just to solve this
problem. Others may have other suggestions.

Re: MI-L moving workspaces

2001-02-14 Thread Caroline Hilton

This can be solved if you don't use 'workspaces' as such, but use the
cataloguing ability of MapLinker (previously known as Images+).
The program was developed for this exact purpose, as the company had
numerous
requests to develop some sort of workspace assistant, so they got around the
problem by setting up data catalogues instead. Now you just click on the
image or set
of images and layouts (from a directory tree) that you want to open, and if
any of the files
are missing it will get you to locate them and will adjust the path
accordingly.

In addition, MapLinker features hotlinking, so you can set up links
between any of your map layers and other applications/maps etc. All of these
links then appear in the catalogue, and with the added bonus of attached
metadata in the catalogue, you and your colleagues will be able to find the
data you are looking for without opening hundreds of different workspaces!

Re: MI-L Printing maps with Scale

Alessandro

There are several third party programs to do this, the ones I know are
GeoBasemap Mapping System and Discover. They are both excellent, but
GeoBasemap is the cheaper of the two, and
is probably more useful to you (Discover was written specifically for
geologists). It allows you to set the paper size, then the scale, and draws
a box around the area on your map window which will fit on the sheet. Then
it changes the map window to fit the box and hey presto, your map is to
scale. It has loads of other useful functions too.

There's a useful bit of freeware called ScreenSeize which allows the user to
capture the active window/dialogue box etc (like printscreen, but it gives

Here's a handy FYI if you are trying to save MapInfo mappers as
bitmaps and don't want a border (or a partial one as is often the
case).

In 6.0, you just have to click on the Advanced button from the
Save Window As dialog and uncheck "Export Borders"

Prior to 6.0, you need to add a key to the registry. Run Regedit
and open up
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  SOFTWARE
MapInfo
  MapInfo
Common

Choose Edit/New from the menu and create a new DWORD key called
ExportBorder. Set it to 0 (zero). Exit and restart MapInfo, and
now all your Save Window As exports will be borderless!

Re: MI-L Linking MapInfo polygons to an Access database

2001-01-23 Thread Caroline Hilton

Fair point, Justin. Congratulations on getting your links working using
MapBasic. MapLinker and other similar software packages are around to make
it easy for people not familiar with MapBasic, or for those who don't have
time to iron out the bugs and want things working immediately. There is
obviously room for both approaches, and it depends on one's requirements.
That's the great thing about this list - the ability for people to solve
each others problems in as many different ways as possible. The nice thing
about MapLinker, I think, is that it is available in the MapX version for
end users not familiar with MapInfo, and in this case works out a lot
cheaper than buying lots of MI Pro copies and training users.

By the way, is anyone else not receiving all the list messages? I didn't get
the one I sent to the list a couple of days ago (below)!

Hi everyone,

oh and hello Caroline, hope everythings OK. Of course
third party software is the easiest way of producing
such links. However I though I'd mention that the DDE
conversations that I mentioned a while ago can quite
easily be held in either direction between MapInfo and
Access, although I have not done this as its not
necessary for our needs.

It is also worth noting that Word, Excel, Outlook and
pretty much any Office Application can accept a DDE
conversation thus making it quite possible to link to
text documents, pictures, send e-mail etc.

I'm not trying to step on anyones toes, just letting
people know what options there are because this is a
really useful function.

It depends what you want to get out of the links.
 There is some third party
software that does this linking for you, and as well
 as linking to access it
allows links to other programs (word, excel etc, as
 well as jpgs and other
file types). However, and more importantly, it also
 lets you link back the
other way, so that you can have a record open in
access and link back to the
object in MapInfo, thus making it much more
 versatile than the code that
Justin Elzik has developed. The third party software
 he mentioned looking
into is the same as the one I'm talking about, and
 is called MapLinker (by
Exa-min, in Brisbane). However, it is not so
 expensive and it really depends
on what you want to get out of it.

MapLinker also has another advantage, in that it
 allows you to catalogue
data and avoids you needing to use workspaces, so
 has multiple uses.

Re: MI-L Grid N UTM36 WGS84

2001-01-19 Thread Caroline Hilton

Both of the software packages 'Discover' and 'GeoBasemap' provide tools for
adding grids to your map. The advantage given by Discover is that any grid
can be overlain on a map, whereas most of the free tools you can get, and
GeoBasemap, can only add a graticule in the same projection as the map
window in question. This means that, say, you could put a local and
national/UTM grid on a single map if you needed to show them both, or you
can put a lat-long grid on a metric projection.

see www.encom.com.au or www.geobasemap.com.index.html for more details

Re: MI-L MI: Thematic from multiple columns, how?

2000-10-26 Thread Caroline Hilton

Gert

Sorry for the late reply, I hope it's of some use!

For your thematics, you could try an excellent add-on called Display Tools,
made by Exa-Min, in Brisbane. One of its functions is to do just what you
are after. It displays up to 4 variables from a single table, with the
variables ranging in size and colour (as set by you). The thematic styles
are saved in a template for repeated use, and are also set so that they are
printed at a specific size for a given scale, so you know you can see them
on your final map!

What's more, it isn't hugely expensive, will save you loads of time (you
don't have to change any of your columns, add extra columns etc), and it
looks great.

What would be the best way to do a thematic map (individual points in
this case) using several columns from one table?

say you have a table of town points, which has 3 columns for car
dealers, Ford, GM and honda. If the manufacturer has a dealership in a
town, there is a "x" in the field for that manufacturer, otherwise it is
empty. How would I do a thematic showing all combinations of dealers in
each town, such as GM only, all 3, none at all, ford honda, etc, etc

 Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Re: MI-L Why MapInfo is interested in Web Mapping?

2000-10-12 Thread Caroline Hilton

Dear List,

With reference to the MapXtreme pricing model debate - pricing per power
unit or
pricing per server.

Doug wrote that MapInfo quoted that they have adopted the pricing per
power unit because "..this is the way the market is going.."
Does anyone have any elaboration on this as to how MapInfo have justified
this pricing model? Is there a difference between the MapXtreme pricing
within the UK and the rest of the world? What is the pricing?

Thanks.

Caroline

Re: MI-L MI Buttons Sticking

2000-10-12 Thread Caroline Hilton

I'm having this problem with the grabber tool too - with Win98. I thought
maybe my computer was playing up, as I hadn't seen this problem until
yesterday. It's interesting to see others have the same problem. I too am
running MI6.

Subject: MI-L MI Buttons Sticking

 Hi All
having a frustrating problem with MI 6.0 Firstly my Grabber button keeps
"sticking" That is sometimes the "hand" will not pick up the map and move
it. I have to zoom in and out a couple of times to solve the problem. In
addition I had a problem with the reshape button. I had a poly selected
for
editing and hit the reshape button. the nodes of the poly did not appear
when I hit the button again to release it they did appear although I could
not select any of them. this latter problem has only appeared

I am running a Dell optiplex PIII 733 with 256Mb RAM/15Gb hard drive and
Win2000. I'll probably have to face the horror that is MapInfo UK tech
support sooner or later but I was merely wondering if anyone had come
across
 anything like this before.

 cheers

 Jonathan
