MD: mac spdif info
Howdy all, as some of you know i'm not the largest mac user in the world. I do however have to have a couple for testing purposes on software i develop. anyway earlier i was asking about a pci based sound card that did spdif. Heck since i have the machines i might as well play with them :) anyway to take the story into another area i'm currently in the process of upgrading my computer with my delta dio 2496 sound card in it. I went to thier web site and saw that they had mac drivers. I dl'ed them and they installed w/o a problem. the controlls are pretty much the same as they are under windows boxes. same functionality and all. the spdif output and input still can go wicked high and sampling rates on that card are beyond anything i'll currently use it for. anyway just thought that the mac owners out there that have a pci slot open might want to know that this card works. Yeah i do have to admit it's quite a bit more than a usb based solution but it's true digital and no usb is involved. anyway that's my story, and at least for probably another week the mac will have that card, then it get's pulled. anyone know if aureal based sound cards have mac drivers? also it works great with all my md stuff i tried. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You probably won't like this either, but there you go... http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns1367 Copying using home CD recorders is variable, with the US CD giving a no disk message on some recorders. When the digital output from a CD player is connected to the digital input of Philips CD recorder, or Sony Mini Disc recorder, the German disc gives the error message Copy Prohibit or Cannot Copy. hrmmm if this is standard smcs copy protection, i really dont care, i have a stripper. however it probably will annoy others that do not. However if it's some other schema that we dont know about then they are just evil...wait the riaa is evil anyway oh yeah on a side note, has anyone purchased a cd (from a mainstream band) within let's just say the last 5 years, that you actually enjoyed every track on the cd? out of the many many that i have purchased, i can honestly say that i have less than a dozen that i could listen to every track and be pleased. so maybe it's not all the riaa's fault, maybe artists should stop making crap too :) just my 2 cents on that one. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: MD v DAT
Hi, I own a CDR deck, MD deck portable but the one thing I can't do with all this is record a continous 2 or 3 hr FM radio broadcast (and later one day from DAB). OK, my MD gear both have MDLP but I'm after quality rather than convenience. LP4 is rubbish and LP2 is very listenable, but as others have said, only really for personal/in car use. I'm therefore considering a DAT personal. (I can get an Aiwa HD-S200 for UKP150). I'd be interested in comparions of DAT with MD if anyone has experience. How does taping compare ? Editing is not really an issue. I'm after the ability to make continuous long recordings of 2 or 4 hr length. cheers Matt - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Agreed it has been circumvented, but from what i have read (correct or incorrect) these protections are different from ones used in the past. Now if they are or aren't is another reason. but again from what i read (i think c-net) it's way different than even thier latest attempt of putting errors in the track on purpose to induce click sounds. but anyway what we have all said about this so far is correct. every try so far has been moot by them to say the least, and will continue. I have a question for anyone who has any of the copy protected cd's, if you copy it via toslink cable, or coax digital, is there any error copied over to MD or if you have a dat player does it get copied there either? also if you know you have one of these alubms, can you also please give the name and artist of the album. * Wil Harris [EMAIL PROTECTED] on Thu, 27 Sep 2001 | From what I last read, it prevents CDs being read in CD-ROM drives. | Michael Jacksons new album is the next up to use it, and it means no MP3 | ripping (until someone cracks it :P) Ummm... you are a little behind the times, because every implemented mechanism by which CD-DA is protected has already been circumvented. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The thing most people forget about the cost issue is that the VAST majority of consumers don't build their own machine, and will never upgrade their computer (processor upgrade, etc.) in the future. When their current computer gets old/outdated, they sell it (or hand it down) and buy a new one. This is true of both Windows PCs and Macs. That being the case, the above statement about Mac price premiums is only true if you build your own machine. If you buy from a name vendor, as the majority of consumers do, there is no longer a price premium. For the same money, you get as much or more buying a Mac nowadays. And you can upgrade most Mac processors nowadays for pretty cheap as well. Alan Dowds [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I use an Apple in my work as a motorcycle journalist. It's less reliable than my own (home-made) Windows/AMD PC. I think Apples have become less reliable over the past couple of years. The old Performas were almost indestructible. The newer ones seem much less so. There are two things here. The first is that the reason newer Macs are out of the box less stable is that they now have incredibly greater built-in functionality than Performas of years ago had. On any platform, adding features reduces stability. Look what USB did to Windows ;) Objectively, current Macs are far more stable and powerful than older Performas. In fact, from a statistical point of view, the Performa line was the worst line Apple every made if you look at repair histories. That said, any operating system out of the box is bad. Windows, Mac, Linux -- every one can be made significantly more stable with a little knowledge. That sucks for consumers, but that's the way it is. I run NT, OS 9, and OS X, and none of them freezes, because they've all been tweaked a bit. The fact that Alan built his Windows PC leads me to believe that he is quite a bit more proficient with Windows than he is with Mac OS, which could explain why his Windows machine is more stable. As was said earlier on the list, the stability of any operating system is directly related to how much of an expert the user is. Matt Wall [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Apple gives huge breaks on both software and hardware for schools, studends and teachers. so i would guess that is a lot of the reason, not that they want the students using an os that they will use in the real world ;) First, this is a comment from someone who obviously doesn't know the market. The days of huge breaks for schools, students, and teachers ended years ago. The big break Apple gives schools on a $999 computer? About $50. This is because Apple's hardware is actually price-competitive now, so they don't have the margins to work with that they once did. Heck, Dell gives bigger breaks to schools than Apple does. Second, as for using an os that they will use in the real world, that's a silly concept that has never been a good rule for what platform to use, for three reasons. 1) Studies have shown that *learning* to use a computer is far more important than what operating system is used for that learning; 2) the major applications work exactly the same on all platforms; and 3) technology and operating systems change so fast that a kid using a computer in 6th grade today won't be using anything remotely similar to that computer/OS when he's in the real world. (Heck, Mac OS 7.x and 8 were much closer to Windows 95/98 than Windows 3.1 was... even Microsoft found it easier for people to transition from Mac to Windows 9x than from 3.1 to 9x ;)). Given these facts the best thing for a school to do is buy what is the easiest to teach/learn with, the easiest to support, etc. Some schools find this to be Windows, some Mac. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED

Heck i do stuff like this on a daily basis on my 2k machine. The only real difference is i have a nice Fast card in it for capturing video. My HD req's are probably a little higher end than what you would probably need currently. That's too bad Shawn. I've had Macs for many years and my present iMac DV+ does everything I want. It also works beautifully with all my MD equipment through an iMic (USB to analogue converter.) When I look at my few friends with Windows machines, I'm always amazed about the time they need to keep their systems running. (Most of my other friends own Macs!) I own a computer because I want to be productive. I don't want a computer for the sake of maintenance to the OS. I haven't made the step to Mac OS X yet, but I'm very happy about the stability of Mac OS 9.1 and now 9.2. And apart from some latest games, there's nothing you can't do on a Mac that can be done in Windows. The biggest advantage of the Mac OS is of course the flawless application of USB, FireWire and Ethernet. I tested my CD-RW today by recording an audio CD at 12x with Roxio's Toast 5.0. (Files were on my harddisk, I wouldn't risk copying a CD directly this way) While the CD was burning in the background on my Sony FireWire CD-RW I was downloading some songs through LimeWire and my ADSL modem (Ethernet connection) while playing other songs through iTunes and the iMic on my stereo. Everything worked at the same time and no buffer underruns or other problems occurred. I think that was quite an acid test for the stability of Mac OS. This should work on a Windows machine too, but I don't think anyone is going to risk a coaster or a reboot with a test like this:) iMark - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

one more thing about virii and windows and i should be done. if mac held 90+% of the market they would have most of the virii written for them. same goes for any other os. it's not exploits/bugs as they are in every os. it's just the sheer number of people using this os. if ms only had 4% of the market, well i can guarantee that they wouldn't have the number of virii written for them that they currently do. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

As per your question here is my answer. I use Mac, Windows, QNX, Solaris, BSD, but my main focus is on windows. Why you ask, well i own a small cunsulting fir and 99.9% of the offices around me use windows. the rest us Solaris and from time to time we run into someone who has a few macs. anyway that's the reason i use it. Plus if you know windows well enough you can get it stable. IMHO that fact is true with any OS. just because you can install something doesn't mean you know how to make it work well. anyway as per the netmd question from what i have read, and i may be way mistaken on this. If mac software is supported it looks like you will be able to transfer to and from your md player in sp mode at 2x, lp2 mode at 4x, and lp4 mode at 16x. Re: MD: about NetMD, can it do SP????
The only thing i can see of that maybe say's otherwise is i believe that in one of the press releases that it said compatible with all older units, so sp should be ok. now if i am wrong then you are correct that sp wont be in there, but i hope i read the release correctly. Seeing the announcement of NetMD really makes me wonder... Having owned the new Sony Clie, I can say with all certainty that the current versions of OpenMG Jukebox don't allow for anything above the 132 kbps ATRAC3 format, and that was with version 2.1... so is version 2.2 (which is what was announced with the MZ-N1) going to add the codec/encoder for the standard 292 kbps ATRAC? I really doubt that personally... So unless I'm missing something, it looks like NetMD transfers may be limited to LP2 and LP4... although I wonder if NetMD will allow transfers at the 105 kbps bitrate (since the OpenMG Jukebox did have that)? The ambient noise is diminished in a very significant way and they are very comfortable (the silicone earplugs come in 3 sizes). Good luck with your new machine. I was just reading up on VCD and SVCD tonight (Video CD, SuperVCD) and wondering to myself, why does the Sony MD-Discam only fit 20 minutes of A/V onto a 650MB MD? Of course, I realized that the Discam is using much less compression. But wouldn't it be cool to have an MD-based movie player that played SVCD format? (MPEG2 video compression, up to 95 minutes on 650MB, depending on audio quality...) The VCD web sites I visited talked about a typical setup using 224kbps for audio and the remainder for video, but that using 128kbps audio and leaving more bandwidth for video was a better idea. Makes sense to me. By that logic, even better would be 105kbps ATRAC3 audio... I think the next MD-Walkman needs to be an MPEG2 realtime Video recorder. Just as tape progressed from audio to video, it seems the next logical step for MD. The Discam was an interesting proof of concept but they really need to take it further now, and put an i.Link interface on it... -- Howard Chu Chief Architect, Symas Corp. MD: recent addition to the world of MD
hi folks, i've been reading the list archives for quite some time. i have only recently stepped into the world of MD with the purchase of a MZ-R700DPC portable unit (that's arriving tomorrow mind you!) i have run the gamut of portable music devices, and i suppose i saved the best for last -- MD. after holding off for so long, i finally decided to give it a go, thanks to the decline in price. the advantages of MD are certainly there and they match my needs with near perfection. i've since ditched my previous solutions for a be-all end-all portable music device and i'm anxiously awaiting my R700. i live in the US and i've noticed that places like circuit city are actually showcasing their MD players along with the mp3 players and cd-mp3 players. anyway, i just wanted to introduce myself. i guess i'll round this out with a query of some sort. are there any R700 owners on the list? what are your opinions on this model? -matt - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MD: . PC-based ATRAC3
i was the one that posted it, i personally use windac, has cddb support and can also rip entire cd's at a time. If you use an optical out with a good sound card on your computer to pretty descent system setup, the difference between mp3 and atrac becomes super big IMHO. however with most headphones and desktop speakers, no matter if they are thx rated or what IMO it's a little more difficult to notice the difference. anyway hope this helps. - Original Message - From: Danny-K [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, August 31, 2001 3:11 AM Subject: MD: . PC-based ATRAC3 Hello- Someone posted a link to the ATRAC3 codec the other day, so I downloaded and installed it. I've been converting using SoundForge5 and the save-as option. Saving as wav, while selecting the ATRAC3 option with 132 bitrate (105 for online stuff). Anyway. I don't know if it's better than MP3--most would say it is and I wouldn't disagree. But it's a hassle converting tracks one at a time, and I'm wishing for an automated process. I have not been able to find a converter that allows custom codec selection. Everything either converts to MP3 or RA so if anyone knows of a customizable encoder it would be great. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: NetMd technology question
All right since some of us are looking forward to NetMD, I have hopefully a simple yet interesting question. NetMD will be encoded by software (please correct me if i'm wrong). We currently have an ATRAC 3 codec http://www.minidisc.org/mdlpfaq.html (look at number 17) even though the best this will encode from what i understand is lp2 mode. anyway knowing this, will we now be able to encode cd's into atrac and store the atrac files on our computers and also be able to use a codec to play atrac encoded files from our computers? if anyone has any insight on this it would be greatly appreciated. currently i use that atrac codec to both encode and listen to music when i am on a computer because i can tell even on there the diff between atrac at 132 and mp3 at 256 (atrac does a much better job) anywa just some questions that i had. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MD: Hi Fi Audio and computer intelligence
IMHO burners are what you ge is what you pay for i personally will only use Plextor drives. Yeah i pay more, but ya know what, I have yet to have a problem with any of them. anyway just my 2 cents worth. anyway MD still rules in my collection. I've had a lot of horrible problems with CD burners, the kind that make you doubt computer technology as a whole. MD has been comparatively flawless: slow, but rock-solid reliable. And its degradation is reliable: MD will always degrade the sound extremely slightly, while MP3 so far has been very unreliable, as normally used in practice. I could list problems I've had with MP3 and MD, and MP3 has reliability problems, in my experience. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MD: How can we find more info on Net MD? /Handling ATRAC like CD audio
One other question on an other topic. Does anyone know if it is possible to have a software solution for the PC that would convert Wav or CD audio files to ATRAC? I know that even though CD audio files are really not files (they only show up as 1kb if you check them out with Windows Explorer) it is possible to make them wave files. not sure if this link will answer this part of the question, but here goes. from what i understand you want an atrac encoded file on your hd to use instead of mp3, if this is true, go here http://www.minidisc.org/mdlpfaq.html#listen look at #17 on that page, that is a software atrac3 codec. I personally use this on all my files and use it with windac. sounds a lot better than mp3. once loaded pretty much any application will play the atrac files (which actually end up with .wav extensions) anyway i hope that is what your looking for and good luck - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

=== = NB: Over 50% of this message is QUOTED, please = = be more selective when quoting text = === ok, dumb non md question, if you need more than 2 usb ports, why did you use a usb pci card instead of just getting a usb hub? - Original Message - From: Danny-K [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 20, 2001 2:38 AM Subject: MD: . nightingale pro6--user review Hello- I tried looking for this card in various stores and websites and couldn't find it. Finally found someone selling them new on ebay and I got one. The place was in Canada and it costs me $60 including shipping. Not a bad price for a sound card with optical/digital in/out and DVD/AC3 6.0 sound (which I'm not using right now). Set up was pretty easy. The optical/digital daughter board has some plastic on the right side that made it impossible to put in my computer the way I wanted to. I had to take out my usb card, and one pci slot is now wasted, but I don't have a complaint about that. Don't need more than two usb ports right now anyway. But if you're low on pci slots, you may want to think about this. Basically, the daughter board will only fit when placed to the right of the main card, and can not be placed on the left. You'll probably have to end up putting the daughter board in the last slot, and the main card one above it. This may be good in that the sound card will be far away from the fan and drives in your PC, possibly cutting down on any internal noise. Ran into some problems later with the PC not booting up. Took the card out, and completely disabled the system's built-in sound and put the card back in and presto--no problems. I suggest you disable whatever other sound card/built in sound you have before installing this. You don't have to remove your drivers, just disable them. Somehow, my PC doesn't automatically shut off now which is weird, but it doesn't bother me. I just shut off manually and there aren't any problems with drive-scans during the next bootup. Recording to MD is dead easy with the software that comes with it. Set the pause time between tracks (mine's at 3), compile your files and you're good to go. My computer didn't come with an internal digital cable from the cd-rom to sound card (analog only) so I need to score one of those cables. For now I'm going to go with the rip and copy method instead of copying direct from cd to md. An extra step, but not a big deal with me since ripping is pretty quick anyway. By the way, it comes with an extra long optical cable. I'd say it's around 9 feet. All in all, this is well worth the money. If you've got a crappy sound card in your PC, or are still going with the built-in sound, get this thing. It even has an option to support MDLP recording--it's quite modern. I don't know what's different about that, but maybe it does something to prep the files or something. At any rate, MDLP support is there, and it's obvious from the documentation that they had MD recording in mind when they made this card. The people I ordered it from on ebay were very cool and sent is pretty quickly--CompuGlory out of Toronto. Re: MD: motherboards
I can' t put it any other way, IT SUCKS! I have a perfectly good scanner that I paid almost $300 for and now if I want to use it I'd have to buy a PCI SCSI card that would cost almost as much as the new scanner cost me. I was hoping when I wrote to tech support (it's Umax) they tell me they were sending me out a card, but instead they e mailed me a list of compatible cards and stated that they were the only ones that would work with the scanner. Larry too bad about umax, a couple things you might want to look at is instead of getting a PCI based scsi card, look into adaptec's usb/scsi adaptor. that way if you want to move your scanner over to another computer or a laptop you still have access to it. anyway it was just an idea. good luck - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I think it is absurd that Sony charges $100 for this part. At that price, a person has to seriously consider whether it wouldn't make more sense to simply buy a CD or MD changer instead -- probably just what Sony has in mind! The adapter cannot be much more than a connector with few resistors and wires. I would love it if someone who purchases this connector could poke around on it with a voltmeter and reverse engineer it. OK, here is my prediction. Let's say that MD does go away inside the US. there is still a huge asian market that can not be denied and so if us models go away you will still be able to get units. Places like minidisco will still be around. but here is my actual prediction. with target getting md in stock. best buy around here anyway having the largest selection of MD i've ever seen them have. Circuit City (even though i hate em still for DIVX) still caries at least 3 portable units (around here again) at least 1 car unit and a couple home units. and both the places carry blanks out the wazoo. you aren't going to see MD disappear tomarrow. anyway from recent experience with friends that i've not talked into buying MD over an mp3, all have found MD on thier own because they refuse to dump the cash out for the ram. as for recording, people who really bootleg concerts wont use an MP3 based recorder (i think there is only 1 out right now) they will continue to use DAT and MD. well that's my .02 cents :) - Original Message - From: kip martin [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, May 22, 2001 9:44 AM Subject: Re: MD: no more MD at best buy hey is anyone out there predicting MD is in death's throes? anyone on this list (with objectivity) see its demise around the corner? im just curious--im addicted and dont feel like spending $XX.XX on ram for on my cheesy iPaq. and if MD disappears, how will portable recording be handled? little MP3 recorders with mic inputs? inquiring minds want to know! kip martin _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Nice. Replaceable, yes. Not sure if this is easy or not, I didn't bother downloading instructions since I don't have one. The info on doing the upgrade is available here: http://www.nomadjukebox.net/ I have no idea if they can act as a portable HDD or not. I would think yes, but just guessing here. The bottom line is MD is getting swamped with all these other new technologies and unless they stay on the ball and start adding professional and consumer use requirements (like faster then real time transfers) I believe it will go the way of the dodo (or should I say the Tassie Tiger which there is a small amount of hearsay evidence that it may not be extinct just yet). How many others are starting to feel this way ? I completely agree. MD has already become stagnant. Sony needs to do something. Many companies have dropped MD completely, and I'm sure others will follow if sales don't improve soon. Funny part is, if Sony had been listening to it's early adopters (like the good subscribers to mdl) then they would have had the jump on all these new technologies and truly cemented MD's place in history like Vinyl, Compact Cassette and CD (now DVD) and not considered by the next generation to be just another DCC, DAT, LD, or BETA (all of which have their use, but in the general public's view are dead and buried formats). Very true, I have been suggesting better MP3 to MD integration from the beginning, well before the first portable MP3 player ever came out. PS: I recently came across some old video cassettes that I don't know the history of .. they are huge (50% larger then VHS and really thick) I've never seen a player that can play them ... anyone know something about these? I read an article today that indicated that it was going to involve a disc that kind of appears to be like a minidisc, but about the size of a quarter. The disc is supposed to be used in multiple applications(audio, video, ebooks, etc.)and suposedly holds 5 hours of "CD quality" sound on one disc. There are supposed to be blanks that are recordable, but one time only. several major players in the music industry are supposed to be backing this as a new format for pre-recorded music, also. It sounds like a cross between MP3 and MD. I don't know what the technology is that allows for this much data to be stored on the disc. I think they're using different color lasers along with compression. blue lasers have a shorter warelength, and as such, they can read sectors that are closer to each other than red lasers (which most cd/dvd players use). Blue lasers are more expensive than red and I think that's limited their use. My lover told me something about this exact thing a while back. I think I remember something about them having 500meg of space. Obviously, if this is successful, it is a threat to MD as an ongoing format. I'm concerned because, at least from what I've been able to ascertain, it will not have the flexibility in terms of editing and reuse that MDs have. I'm also wondering about sound quality. I don't think we need to worry. Obviously, other digital/optical formats are going to be out there as we move into the future, but MD has been around for too long. And MD is not one-time record, let's not forget that. Still, this new stuff is a cool thing. I have a feeling they'll make some kind of portable thing for kids with it. dont take this the wrong way, but i doubt it will threaten MP3 solutions. most mp3 zealots will still want to be able to put thier mp3 files on md media, mind you not convert them to atrac, but have them there just as an mp3. This could be interesting because I have heard a rumour being passed amongst retailers that there could be 90-minute MDs on the market. If the rumour proves true and someone starts to manufacture 90-minute MDs, you could have discs that go for 3 hours in mono or LP2 stereo or 6 hours in LP4 joint stereo. as for playing the cd, the only player i know of that doesn't use windows stuff is linux and there might be one for bsd too, they have a cd player that actually reads the track instead of controlling the sound card. anyway i still say that using minidisc media to hold raw mp3 files is just a stupid idea. lots of stuff cut , and sending though the passthrough in your sound card. no, winamp does the same thing: control your cd player. you can set it to "sample" from the soundcard, but that just means that the oscilloscope works from the cd-audio; the sounds coming out are the same as with the windows cd player. peter - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

MD: kinda confused about something
Howdy all, recently i posted to this mailing list about the atrac codec that was out there and how i thought that it might be neat if they integrated it into both solid state players and portable cd players. I got many responses that completely confused me in every respect. in almost every case the response was to the fact that they wanted to store mp3's on a MD because the media was cool. OK i agree 100% that the media format is cool and i personally love it. but the part i dont get is that an MP3 at 128k is fairly close in size to ATRAC3 at 132k. now knowing this the only thing that mp3 would give you on a minidisc is crappy sound. I'm not sure if people dont get the fact that MD medium does not hold the 650 meg that cd's do or the fact that they just like music that sounds like crap. anyway if anyone can answer why you would want to put mp3's on a minidisc for storage instead of atrac on a medium that can hold a little more (dont get me wrong i love the md format and use it for exercising all the time, plus on my home stero too) anyway hopefully someone can explain this to me. thanks sorry about that last msg for some reason my test is getting deleted on first send - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

well long play depends on you. if you like MP3's, long play is great. if you think mp3's lack all quality whatsoever and pretty much do not use them except in extreme cases where you can not find the original, then lp probably isn't what your looking for. as for "best" that's one that nobody can answer, you should ask "what might be the most appropriate recorder/player for my situtation" and then give the parameters or your search, that would help out more than best. - Original Message - From: "Lion Shmulevich" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "MD list" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, February 24, 2001 8:21 AM Subject: MD: Hello , I have a few questions: Hello , I have a few questions: 1) Which is the best MD now availabale? one question i've not heard this question asked. you said you heard no quality difference. well are you listening to the audio using the same sound setup? i mean it can even sound better if his puter has an old sb 16 sound card and he is using some generic desktop speakers that dont sound good, but after encoding them twice and put's them on cd or md plays it on a very nice stero system, yes it's going to sound better there than on the computer just becuase of the simple dynamics of what each can handle. so as for the quality sounding better who know's everyone hears different anyways :) - Original Message - From: "David W. No, I'm saying that a cumulative effect does exist, but it is not as great as what you'll expect if you multiply compression ratios. Putting audio through 10:1 MP3 compression and the MP3 output through 5:1 ATRAC compression sounds worse than the MP3 file, but it would not be as bad as 50:1 compression. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: MD: What is Sony thinking?!?
this kinda has to do with this subject, but only a little. last evening we had some nasty snowy weather here and our power was out for about 10 hrs. right after it went out i decided, since i was wide awake, to listen to some music, i got out my trusty portable MD player and started to listen to it. just laying there i realized one super major bigtime realization(ok well maybe it isn't so bigtime) if you are listening to MD on a portable that has been digitally copied, IMO you can not tell the difference between the original and the copy, at least on sub $150 headphones or any earbuds. However just the opposite can be stated about MP3's, i can be listening with crappy $0.99 earphones and definately tell the difference between the original and the copy. Anyway i got that out of my system, i love my MD players and i've converted many people over from getting portable MP3 players to getting MD players, after they realize how much media costs for mp3 players and how bad they exactly sound they realize how big of a piece of crap they are. Hopefully some day there will be a good solid state solution that has no or extremely little cd loss with high compression, but until that time comes i'm sticking with MD. - Original Message - From: "chaulsr" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, December 12, 2000 9:03 AM Subject: RE: MD: What is Sony thinking?!? From what I observed Sony had changed the way it market MD in the past 2 years. When I first saw MD about 10 years ago, it advertised as Compact, Digital Audio, Near CD sound quality, and most important, Recordable/Editable. As that time Sony is targetting the audio tape, so that make sense for all that claims. And MD does a good job and take over most of the market from audio tape. But what happened in recent years is the new MP3 format which started with a software only implementation and later got hardware implemented, plus the advancement of memory technology which end up a price drop. So a MP3 player make sense and most computer users can easily produce/collect their own MP3 collections. So we now see Sony kindly offer us USB connection and MDLP which extended the fantasy of MD. I guess that's toward the Computer users rather than the audio market. And last, personally I prefer MD. It's easy to record, I just snap in a CD and a MD then press several buttons. For MP3, I need to go through all those softwares and have to spare my computer. And for the long run, MD should be cheaper. Just my 2 cents. Raymond How can the folks at Sony be so thick-headed? The Fall 2000 issue of Sony Style magazine advises us to connect the USB PCLink to our computers to "record mixes to your MD recorder with almost no loss in sound quality." To further reinforce their contention that MD doesn't sound as good as it could, they go on to advertise their MDW-80D premium discs as being constructed in a way that "reduces vibrations during disc rotation to produce even better sound." While MP3 advocates crow about their "near CD sound quality," Sony seems to want to warn people that Minidisc doesn't really sound that good. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, December 10, 2000 3:59 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: md-l-mimedigest V2 #829 Message: md-l-mimedigest V2 #829 (530 bytes) - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] === s K O q l l c http://sinamail.sina.com.hk Y U SinaTicker http://sinaticker.sina.com.hk === s K O q l l c http://sinamail.sina.com.hk Y U SinaTicker http://sinaticker.sina.com.hk - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

=== = NB: Over 50% of this message is QUOTED, please = = be more selective when quoting text = === someone correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't the sony pen looking thing actually use atrac 3 for it's audio format? so were almost there if you really wanna look at it that way. personally i want an atrac encoder/player for my computer, i hate mp3's but i think that atrac would rock to fill up a 45 gig drive with my cd's for a jukebox. similar to what people are doing with mp3's but atrac would actually sound good :) - Original Message - From: "Nicolas Verroit" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "MD-L" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, October 31, 2000 2:36 PM Subject: MD: ATRAC3 on PC Hello guys, I don't think I've seen that information on the mailing list so I give it to you : Real Player (more specifically Real Jukebox) has now a Add-on that allows it to use Atrac3 to compress the audio files. reference ZDnet (only in French, sorry... but I'm sur we can find it in English.) http://www.zdnet.fr/actu/tech/a0016541.html?nl=zdnews the Add-on is not available immediately after download. You must first have real jukebox 8 and after update it. imagine the futur world : encoding (6x at least) plus CDDB upload to minidisc et voila (OK, OK, we're not there yet but if sony would make a walkman using MD instead of Memory Stick and with the same functionnalities, that could make the big thing that is missing to MD world) Can't wait to see that !
