[MBZ] Pressure Bleeding.

2005-07-15 Thread Peter Arnold
Found most of the parts to make a pressure bleeder, I've got $20 into
it.
Trouble finding a master Cylinder cap, guess I'll try a dealer
tomorrow.
If I understand correctly, I will simply pressurize The reservoir with
about 20 PSI, I have no gage. Than bleed furthest to the closest.

I have 2 pints of #4 brake fluid coming. I'll use a can of #3 to
flush the parts while cleaning.

I'm also changing shocks. Car is jacked up with front wheels off. I
have to put another jack/support to hold the lower A frame while
removing shock as the shock acts as a stop for suspension travel. Is
this correct?

Going to be a fun weekend

Moose stuff, I missed a huge cow moose with my truck/camper a few
years ago. She ran in front of me, I flat spotted 8 tires! Also
ruined my underwear, those things are huge!

Mitch,

I think that it is possible for this car to get pretty close to 110 mph,
certainly it will exceed 100. My '85 wagon with 320k miles on it, with same
engine and transmission as this car, has reached an indicated 107 mph in 5th
gear (will go faster in 4th gear but I didn't know that before and haven't had
an opportunity to find out how much faster since). I've reason to think that
my speedometer is pretty accurate, but I haven't 'calibrated' it against GPS
yet. If the EGR valve has been disabled, a reasonable estimate is a gain of
~5hp (comparing info from '85 TDM for engine power figures in countries that
didn't require EGR - they got an extra ~5hp). The sedan will be lighter than
my wagon (lighter still than a US spec car which has an automatic transmission
and heavier bumpers).

Also, do I see an ABS pump in the engine bay?

Unfortunately, the car is beginning to rust - I think I see bubble on the
leading edge of the RR fender, and there is a rust stain on the front bumper.
Also, the jack points look a little ragged - very hard to tell in the poor
lighting conditions used to photograph the car so that it is very tough to see
the lower body parts.

Will be fun to see how much it goes for!

Max

Mercedes rates the 123.130 and 123.190 at 150 kmh (94 mph).

Correct me if I'm wrong (gently), but although the '85 sedan and estates
shared the same engine, the estate engine was detuned? Auxiliary systems
parasitise power too, so, among other things, the self-levelling suspension
system peculiar to the wagons would be draining grunt. I guess gear/diff
ratios would also influence velocity.

The fastest I've navigated my '85 non-turbo 300TD 5-spd to was 145 kph (90
mph) on a flat plain. Mind you, that was fully (I mean, fully) laden with
all the gear a family of women need when travelling, into a slight headwind,
on the crap-quality diesel marketed to us here in NZ. The smoke plume was
reported from space.

The sedan and estate engines are IDENTICAL. While the self leveling
suspension pump will drain a little power when pumping, that's
negligable once the engine is started and running for a bit and level
established - then it only needs to add what leaks. The rear ends for
the sedan and and wagon have identical ratios (there were special ratios
for special purpose vehicles).

That's true of MOST Mercedes 5 speeds! All of my 5 spds would go faster
or the same speed in 4th. I've owned 3 of them. The TDMs and owner's
manuals point that out too.

It's unrelated to the governor - it relates to how much power the engine
can deliver and at what engine speed. In 5th gear the engine doesn't
deliver as much power as is necessary to travel at maximum speed - it
will deliver enough more power in 4th gear to permit the car to go a
little faster. Either are below the 5100 governor limit (usually the max
ground speed will occur at an engine speed of about 4600 +/- 200 rpm).

[MBZ] Re: Top speed in what gear?

2005-07-15 Thread Dan Weeks
Not at all uncommon at all. In a relatively low-powered engine, a
higher gear can put you too far off the power peak to overcome wind
resistance and other running friction at higher speeds, so you can
achieve a higher speed in a lower gear. Downhill or in a stiff
tailwind, you may be able to exceed the lower gear's top speed, but
not on the level.

[MBZ] Coolant

2005-07-15 Thread TimothyPilgrim
Looks like I might need to replace my lower rad hose. It was spilling
the green stuff crazily the other day, and the various drive belts
were flinging the stuff everywhere. I poked at it tonight and the
upper end of it appears to be quite flared around the engine inlet and
there was a small amount of coolant pooled around the lip.

So as I recall, the right stuff to use is Zerex G-05 which has a
yellowish tinge. So is the green stuff in my car okay? It's the
typical antifreeze I've seen sold all over the place. Also, if I
should decide to drain the coolant system, what's the total capacity I
can expect to remove, and to replace?

12313010214405 would indicate a four-speed manual and the 1A indicates a

What?

You're saying that your car has a higher top end in 4th than it does
in 5th? Unless there is a governor attached to overdrive, that is
totally counter intuitive.

You can't beat my BMW Isetta though for proving there is always an exception.
It overrevs if you try to exceed 38-40 MPH in 3rd gear. 4th (top gear) will
take you to 54 mph. It matches your criteria, low power, 298 cc, 13 hp. If
you've seen a rolling egg you know about wind resistance.

I think the majority of the time you see the phenomena beign talked about is
when overdrive is involved. The drive train is geared to run up to to 1:1
ratio and then when you engage OD it is for economy not speed.

yes, or poor engineering. In the case of my VW, the oversize rear tires
acted as an overdrive. Had it been left per Dr. Porshe's design, it would
have run out to a better top speed. However, being broke and cheap, I left
on the oversize tires and imagined i was saving money by lowering engine
RPM/road speed.

IIRC, 1984 was the only year for the Lincoln with the BMW diesel. Very

The E34 (third-generation 5-series) is IMHO the best car BMW ever
made---their version of the 124. With a diesel it would be a dream
come true.

I'm a bit worried by the seller's report of it being "slow on takeoff".
Maybe not getting turbo boost---some kind of problem equivalent to the
infamous blocked banjo bolt? From all reports I've read about these
cars, BMW did a great job of optimizing the torque and power curves on
these engines for plenty of low-end grunt.

Seems like a good deal for a few thousand bucks, though, assuming valid
paperwork. I'm very skeptical of these Euro cars that periodically pop
up on Ebay that were imported after the end of the great "gray-market
era" in 1985 or '86, when import rules were tightened up and DOT/EPA
conversions became much more expensive. IMHO, anyone buying one of
those should make darn sure not just that the car has a valid state
title but also that it came here by above-board means, lest it be
confiscated and crushed by the Feds.

bad motor mounts.
How long do motor mounts last? This set has been in about 36,000 miles.

Oh OK Don, the hubcaps arrived yesterday. You totally made them sound worse

[MBZ] Mercedes-Benz 300D 5-Speed MANUAL / RARE '85, MINT

2005-07-15 Thread meadedillon
Euan,

Catching up on digest - forgive if already covered.

I don't think that the estate engine was 'de-tuned' compared to the sedan.
True, the SLS pump would be a parasitic loss that the sedan wouldn't have
unless it had the SLS option. I think the bigger difference is the weight and
the wind resistance. I would imagine that the wind resistance for the wagon is
higher?

During my highspeed run, I was quite suprised at the smoke trail, and feared
that my oil consumption rate was too high at that speed for me to continue more
than about 10 minutes. With wife, luggage and full tank, I've been able to
easily cruise at 90 mph and touch 95 occasionally, but the car is much more
stable and well behaved at ~85. I would suspect that your car is not
performing at full potential - should be able to reach top speed with two souls
on-board, full liquid load and a small amount of luggage (i.e. ready-to-drive
condition). Did you have the AC cranking? Head wind would definitely have a
large affect at high speed - most of the power required is going into
overcoming wind resistance.

Don,

Yes, 4th gear has a higher top speed than 5th, officially noted in the 1985
TDM. It's a small difference - something like 5 KPH, and due to the engines
power band which puts the HP peak close to the max. RPM (4800 RPM HP peak IIRC,
max. RPM 5050).

Ciao Ciao,
Max

[MBZ] 124 AC evaporator reliability (Calling Doktor B!)

2005-07-15 Thread meadedillon
Marshall,

Have you kept any data on the reliability (or failure rate) for evaporators in
'87 300TDs?

I'm considering the purchase of a poor example of such a fine car, and it's
been abused to the point that the egine has been replaced at least once
(247,000 miles on the odometer). One of the many problems the car has, and
most worrisome to me, is that the AC doesn't work.

Any idea if evaporator failures were higher or lower based on region (i.e.
North vs. South)? I'm thinking that this car's AC died while it was in the
North, not really hot enough to need it, so it's been INOP for years. I'm
thinking that means a lower probability that the EVAP is bad? Does that make
any sense, or am I trying to rationalize this purchase?

Thanks in advance,
Max

At Houston Hobby airport a few months after 9/11, I was at the head of
the line for a short flt to Dallas, Southwest Airlines (cattle line).
The gate attendant announces, "Anyone who would like to volunteer for a
random security check will get on the plane first." Aside from the fact
that if you had to go through that process you would be about #30 on the
plane, I stupidly could not resist asking him, , "How can it be random
if you volunteer?" He said, "Well, then you just volunteered" and the
woman behind me (#2 in line) got /seriously /upset that she couldn't
volunteer to be randomly searched to be first in line. I got to do the
stupid human tricks, was about #30 on the plane.

Southwest did away with the plastic strips and started issuing paper
boarding passes, they started bar coding the boarding passes of people who
were "randomly chosen" As soon as you got your boarding pass, you knew you

I believe that all 4-speed VWs had an overdrive 4th gear.  It was a pretty mild

Probably lower. My experience with other makes is that the wagon usually has
a lower drag coefficient. It might seem hard to believe, but that squared off

Make sure the motor mount is lined up straight with

I don't think any other 240D will. It is not an option
you can have it installed at the factory. It's a
proprietary feature - one that will take many factors
and many trials to reproduce the exact result!

BTW, as one lister said, the chasis did move forward
and messed up some of IP accelerator linkage rods. No
wonder the car drives slower after the accident. Good
thing is that every is metal - bend the pivot mounting
bracket and the power got back some.

RPM (4800 RPM HP peak IIRC,
max. RPM 5050).

The 123 wagon has lower drag/wind resistance than the sedan, but weighs
120 kg (264 lb) more. The two vehicles had exactly the same rated top
speed (but the wagon's 0-62 mph acceleration time was more than a second
slower).

Evaporator failure rate in 124 wagons from the south seems to be to be
in the 40-50% range - northern cars seem to do a little better (but my
mostly Pittsburgh run 124 wagon evaporator failed after about 4 years in
Virginia).

There's a cruise ship that takes passengers "thousands of miles" to get to
Alaska? I thought most came from Seattle and Vancouver, which are only hundreds
of miles away. Perhaps they travelled thousands of miles, but not all the way
on a cruise ship?

Relax, I'm just cracking wise with you. Living on the Puget Sound we hear
folks ask about how far above sea level we are all the time. Some folks want to
know where the water goes when the tide goes out too.

An acquaintance of mine who lives in Ketchikan, Alaska, says that tourists
will often travel thousands of miles on a cruise ship to get there, step off
onto the dock, then immediately ask how far above sea level they are.

Re: [MBZ] 124 AC evaporator reliability (Calling Doktor B!)

2005-07-15 Thread Peter Frederick
Approximately 15% of W124 chassis cars have cracked evaporators, much
higher than normal rates. Engine has no effect on this, it's the
evaporator design. If you replace it, make SURE you get the all
aluminum one, the one with copper pipes/aluminum body is the problem.
They usually last around 200,000 miles.

However, there are a number of other things that can cause the AC to
not work due to freon leakage, notably the pipe manifold on the
compressor and the front seal on the compressor, along with failed
hoses and corroded condensers. Corrosion is a serious problem up north.

Only way to check to to pressurize and leak test. The evaporator
replacement is a PITA, but it's not that hard, just takes forever.
Knock a couple thou off the offering price for a dead AC and run with
it. Chances are it's only a leak (check for deteriorated rubber in the
compressor clutch).

I'd not pass a decent 300D with a replacement engine just because the
AC was toast.

Top speed in third gear was rpm limited to 45mph. My two '59 KGs, one a cab,
had the same performance numbers, if you could call it that.

 All,

I have a 1978 Mercedes 300CD Diesel. I need some parts that I am having a hard
time locating.

Attached is a picture of the black plastic cover that fits on the back of my
power window switch on my console. This is the black plastic top part that
fits/connects to the bottom cover. The top part (cover) and the bottom part
contain the wire harness to my front power window switch.

Attached is the bottom part below: (I do not need the bottom part; I just need
the above top cover to it.)

Can you sell me the top part covers or tell me where I can purchase them? I
need 2 of them. How much would it cost? At the dealer, it costs only $2.00 per
cover, but it is not in stock.

The 123 wagon has lower drag/wind resistance than the sedan, but weighs 120 kg
(264 lb) more. The two vehicles had exactly the same rated top speed (but the
wagon's 0-62 mph acceleration time was more than a second slower).

All the information you can read (without a breakout box) is the number
of pulses that can be read. It's covered in the manual 7.1-1120/pp 79-84
(attached). I've never done this as there are no useful pulse codes
available on any of MY '87 and earlier cars and don't know if a dwell
meter can be used to read pulses (I've used a homemade led and counted
pulses on other cars).

[MBZ] WAS: Using Duty Cycle to Measure ECU Codes

2005-07-15 Thread John Peterson
The analog "needle" meter worked fine- I got a 1 (no codes) and triple
checked it by road testing and putting it up to 2200RPM a few times. With
the ignition in the "II" position I get a 7, which I am told is normal
because one of the sensors does not read until the motor is actually
running.

SO, it looks like there are no codes. My symptoms are, nailing idle, lots
of shake, and very poor performance, 5MPH on hills.

I have changed the pre and main fuel filters and the fuel thermostat, which
was leaking.

I ran Moly purge through the tank. I have the kit from PP to run through
the injectors directly.

Do the symtoms above ring any bells? Could the items be explained by a bad
or clogged injector?

PS- no smoke seems to come from this 1990. My 1991 whisps out when shifting
hard. This one feels fuel or air starved.

Thanks friends.
