Thanks for trying to scare me guys, but head is torqued properly, and cam installed correctly. I was not completely without a manual. ;-) I'm certainly a amateur, but not a complete novice! So, has anyone determined a method of timing without the special tools? It might be time to cash in some favors at mbusa. Rolling in the chain didn't go as smoothly as I had imagined it would, but I would be a bit surprised if the IP timing was knocked too far out. I wonder how much space is in there for the chain to jump off the sprocket. Cam timing is rather easy to correct... IP, well... thats what I'm trying to learn! My friend (owner of car) informs me now that the car may have run similar to this before suffering the failed head gasket. Hmmm! (This story might get longer...) Thanks for the responses everyone! Engine runs, but has little power and sounds kinda funny. I'll even go farther to say that doing a head gasket on an OM60x without the actual factory manual is risky at best, mainly due to the oddities of the engine that don't exist in a lot of other engines. There is a certain torque pattern for the head, and there is a time element to torquing the head bolts down, and a number of degrees to turn them, rather than a hard-fast torque setting (like almost everything else I have). I really hope you didn't damage the cam by incorrectly removing/installing it. Re: [MBZ] OM601 injection pump timing
Until recently when I purchased the RIV tool, I timed my IP by eye. I used a mirror, small maglite, and the locking pin for good measure. Pull the oil filler cap ( to determine when #1 cam lobes are both pointing up), remove the 17mm plug on the side of the pump, and rotate the engine (CW) until the crank pointer shows 15 degrees ATDC. Look in the plug hole on the side of the IP with mirror and flash light to determine whether the governor ridge is perfectly centered in the window. If not, then loosen all four IP bolts and use the adjuster to rotate the pump accordingly to center the ridge in the window--pop the locking pin in to confirm (you can really omit this step if you don't have the locking pin). The engine will run fairly well, as long as the ridge is visible in that plug window. It's really quite easy. Can this be done statically... set engine to TDC, pull pump and rotate to a timing mark and reinstall? Or are there special tools needed? I have no way to check timing as it is now. Did a head gasket on the car and rolled in a new chain and I suspect the injection timing may now be off. Engine runs, but has little power and sounds kinda funny. I always liked the bubble method that the late Bob Sanigar preferred: On the subject of diesel timing . If you are replacing the pump or rebuilding the engine. The simplest and most accurate way of setting the pump is. Disconnect the fuel line going into the pump from the filter. Take the spring and plunger out of #1 delivery valve, put the delivery valve back in and snug it down, hold the the pump linkage in the full open position . If you have the drip tube install it on the delivery valve, if not use the injector line in such a way that it is pointing away from the engine. It you don't mind the taste of diesel you can blow through the fuel line or use low air pressure. Put the open end of the injector line in a glass of water and watch the bubbles. Turn the engine slowly until the bubbles stop and check the timing mark. After tightening the pump recheck. This method is really more precise than it needs to be and although it may sound complicated it is very easy. Bob The locking tool is a little easier once you've done it several times and it works on ALL of my cars. But IF your pump doesn't have the provision for using the locking tool the bubble method ALWAYS works - with or without a hand pump or the provision to use the locking tool. The wet methods all require that the injection pump be filled with fuel and this can't be guaranteed without a hand pump. The bubble method works perfectly without the hand pump but you do have to remove the delivery valve and disturbing it CAN create a problem (the O ring or the valve sealing may fail - and I've even seen a valve plunger snapped in half). The locking tool method is very simple but required a couple of tries before I was sure of what I was doing. For all of MY engines (except my 2.5 normally aspirated), 24 (+/- 1) BTDC is correct. Should you need to remove the injection pump to reset the timing more than 4-6 degrees, you will need to remove the oil filter housing ;-( Marshall -- Marshall Booth (who doesn't respond to unsigned questions) der Dieseling Doktor [EMAIL PROTECTED] '87 300TD 181Kmi,'87 190D 2.5 199Kmi, '84 190D 2.2 227Kmi, '85 190D 2.0 159Kmi, '87 190D 2.5 turbo 234kmi Diesel Technical Advisor MBCA, member GWSection http://www.dhc.net/~pmhack/mercedes/mbooth1.htm

OK, need to start looking for another 140 pretty soon for the wife. My old 93 was pretty good, had the typical ac evaporator problem which was fixed under warranty. Im trying to refresh my memory about the 140's and newer cars in general. I do remmeber the 92 and 93 had some sort of suspension problem that should have been fixed by now on all them. What about the AC evap problem, is it on all 140's? Next question, what about the biodegradable wiring that degrades too fast? Was talking to a dude who said in fact 92, and maybe 93's were good in the fact that they still have the good old fashioned wiring. So what years are affected with this problem? I have also noticed it seemed like some of the later ones, past about 96, didnt have as many options as the earlier ones. -- Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] 140's, new cars, degrading wiring etc
I suspect the evaporator issue is the same as on the W124 chassis, a fatigue failure at the crimp seal between the copper inlet/outlet lines and the aluminum core. This has been fixed in replacement (OEM, not aftermarket) evaporators. The wiring problems were in the E Class models, with 94-96 being the worst, but all 93 and later W140s may be as bad. I've seen at least one with wiring trouble, and my friend the mechanic was warned NOT to remove the connectors to the three computer modules, and the insulation would very likely completely crumble and require a complete harness replacement -- parts on the order of $2500 to say nothing of the labor. Benz reduced both the quality and option list after 94 to control costs -- the early W140 were probably the nicest cars they ever made, but price point on cars has been essentially static since then, and in order to sell them at all, something had to give. Even rich foolish Americans aren't going to drop $120,000 on a $45,000 car (vis a vis Lexus). Suspension is identical to the W124, and the rear links will die with age and require replacement. This fixes a number of ills, and the new links will last longer than the old ones (the old ones run typically 150,000 miles plus). Peter

The car in question was an S420, I think -- age unknown at this point. The problem was the BODY harness, not just the engine harness (no power to an O2 sensor causing intermittant check engine light idling). The warning was for ALL the harnesses at the computers (including the climate control) -- flexing the wiring would destroy it, and both engine and body harness would need to be replaced. Terrible mistake, that wiring. Volvo owners are much, much to familiar with it -- I burned up a starter and neutral safety switch on the 740TD -- moved the harness and all the insulation fell out of the cover, none on the wires anymore. Re: [MBZ] Boost line check valve?
I think many cars have such a valve in the hose that feeds from the intake manifold to the brake booster. I had a problem with one in an 81 Honda Civic. It would freeze up when cold and leave one with the impression that there were no brakes - there were - just not power brakes until it warmed up under the hood a bit and unfroze. A new hose with the valve somewhere inside solved the problem. Randy in Winnipeg -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Zeitgeist Sent: Friday, July 29, 2005 3:06 PM To: Mercedes mailing list Subject: [MBZ] Boost line check valve? The latest thread about leaky valve stem seals has gotten me to think about the presence of pressure and (a little) vacuum in the intake manifold. I've been monitoring my boost pressure gauge and have detected a fair amount of vacuum in the intake off idle until boost builds. I'm also experiencing a bit of throttle lag off idle, before the beast leaps forward with a vengeance, so I'd like to put a pressure check valve in the line between the manifold and ALDA, so I can test a theory (btw: I know about adjusting the ALDA screw or shimming, so hold that thought). Does anyone know of small orifice check valve for either pressure or vacuum (I assume these can just be turned around, right?)? Does MB or another make use one of these check valves? I've seen vacuum filters and reducers, but not a small orifice check valve so far. Re: [MBZ] '85 300D u-joint
No, you need to replace the driveshaft complete, or send it off to someone that can re-center and strake in place a new u-joint. DO NOT replace it yourself, it will shake horribly. I did one, won't ever do another. There is at least one place who can do them right, but the charge $650 (six or seven years ago) for the job. A used driveshaft is about $100 most places -- pull the front half off and check for that tight spot before installing, and return it if it's there. Peter

Re: [MBZ] eBay issues
Craig, I've had similar situations in which I contacted Paypal when that is how I paid. The best route to contact them is by using the toll free number that is not easily found without doing a little digging. If you have paid through Paypal via credit card, you may also want to contact the credit card company to initiate a chargeback. I would also recommend opening a case with Squaretrade. So far, I have always been able to get my money back or get things straightened out. Good luck! Aha! Good for you. Well, that explains where a lot of your great leads on cars comes from Dan Well I work for trader publishing(aka autotrader) which I usually drive 150-200 miles per week. When I get done with that job in the afternoon I have a couple of massive newspaper routes which I drive another 100 miles(so we are up to at least 250 miles per day). Then when I get home in the evening I list parts, sell parts, run email lists etc. On the weekends I work on car projects, strip cars down to be crushed, or head out of town to pick up more cars. And sometimes during all that I try and find time to eat and spend time with the family. As of now (9pm) I have not yet eaten my b-fast, much less lunch or dinner. Re: [MBZ] OT: WI DNR
My observations are that conservatives like to usurp power from you. Even though they invent trade deals that put people out of work, they bitch about the lazy people they just put out of work. They seem to be intolerable of anyone outside of WASP's or at least English speaking white folks with money. They also hate unions, school teachers, anyone who makes more money than they do except well educated conservative anal types, gays, immigrants, people on welfare, big cities ( where are the liberals live ) except the rich areas, and of course, people who don't go to church.. Pretty much rules me and half the population out around here. And we all speak English and are pretty white, but have no real money.

Re: [MBZ] Stop me please before I do something I will regret
Every older car has a GOTCHA in terms of some inane part that floors you when you get the price quote. Until today, I would have said my Volvo 164e was the exception to that rule... until I called the dealer for a water pump... $353 Cdn. Ha ha ha ha ha, etc. Even the aftermarket is $135. Anyway, stuff like an ignition module you look for on eBay and grab secondhand and keep for a rainy day. I would have thought the biggest gotcha on that car would be the climate control servo. Followed by the tranny, which does not sound like a winning proposition at all. What you have there, in my experience, is a $1k car fixing to be a $2.5k car in fairly short order. Re: [MBZ] 140's, new cars, degrading wiring etc

Re: [MBZ] Boost line check valve?
Casey, I have been playing with the signal to the ALDA with the 617 engine, not yours though. If there is a check valve (at least on the 617) the ALDA will stay pressurized from your peak boost even after you take your foot off the go pedal. Until it leaks down to the correct intake pressure your IP will be spitting out more fuel at a given throttle position than it should be. Perhaps, Marshall can weigh in and confirm. Out of curiosity, how much is a fair amount of vacuum? Andy On 7/29/05, Zeitgeist [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The latest thread about leaky valve stem seals has gotten me to think about the presence of pressure and (a little) vacuum in the intake manifold. [MBZ] Half Axle Replacements (W123)
Paul, Go to www.car-parts.com http://www.car-parts.com/ (no affiliation) and search for a used parts source for the half axles. The service manual advised to replace the axle retaining clips in the differential. They are part number 115 994 04 34. Re: [MBZ] For some reason, I really like this car
Man thats my biggest spelling pet peeve, how hard is it to put the e in the right place? The last year I was in college I was an RA and worked with a woman who would always put All quite in the log. For the first few weeks I'd write things like Quite interesting that it was all quiet last night. One day in a meeting she asked me while I wrote Quiet interesting that it was all quite last night... She was a junior majoring in Secondary Ed. She's why when and if my wife and I have kids we'll homeschool or at least give the teachers a test before I allow them to teach my kid. -Curt Date: Sat, 30 Jul 2005 00:13:55 -0500 From: Rich Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] For some reason, I really like this car To: Mercedes mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 *THE EXUST MUFLER IS QUITE --R - Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page

[MBZ] Gotcha Goat....
GOATS A group of Americans were traveling by tour bus through Holland. As they stopped at a cheese farm, a young guide led them through the process of cheese making, explaining that goats milk was used. She showed the group a lively hillside where many goats were grazing. These she explained are the older goats put out to pasture when they no longer produce. She then asked, What do you do in America with your old goats? A spry old gentleman answered, They send us on bus tours, and let us live in Florida.

Re: [MBZ] Stop me please before I do something I will regret
My rationale (if you can call it that) is that suppose I would end up putting in $1k or$2k over a year, then having a $2k or$3k solid, decent looking, nearly 30 yr old car, probably better than any other POS you could buy for that kind of money. Insurance is nothing, But then again it is not like I need the car, just seems like a decent deal even if it ends up needing some more money thrown at it, and I could probably durn it 4 a profiterole 2 sunwum own ebbbayee. Anyway, stuff like an ignition module you look for on eBay and grab secondhand and keep for a rainy day. I would have thought the biggest gotcha on that car would be the climate control servo. [MBZ] Replacing traling arm bushings
Is there any decent way to remove the trailing arm bushings without dropping the entire rear subframe? With the differential, trailing arms, etc attached I imagine its a good 200lbs easy, which would be no fun to reinstall and prolly dangerous to remove. I was thinking of disconnecting the differential mount, and supporting the differential with a jack. Then lower one side of the subframe at at time. With each side lowered I could replace the subframe bushings and have access to remove the trailing arm bushings. Does this sound reasonable? Are the axles really only held in with the one bolt in the center of the rear brake disk? Will I need to do anything special to push the axle out? The manual has a special tool to do that... I am replacing the rear brake discs and pads, so will probably have those items removed when lowering the trailing arm to help out with weight... Driveshaft should be out shortly (waiting on paint to dry for the alignment mark), and rear shocks and springs are already removed. Is anything I'm doing very stupid or do you have any suggestions? Thanks!! John '79 300SD

Sil-Glide is not an assembly paste, Herman. It has no place in the piston/cylinder assembly. I've tried several times over the years to find a proper brake cylinder paste as is listed in many manufacturers' manuals, always with no success at all. Not familiar with any other of the products you've listed but I suspect that they're all anti-squeel products. If you do run across a true brake cylinder assembly paste I'd purely love to hear about it even though I've never encountered any problems with using brake fluid during assembly. joe
Re: [MBZ] Exhaust
TimeValve stainless steel is the best choice, particularly if you intend to keep the car any length of time as it will long outlast the body (so will factory replacement, probably!). Avoid aftermarket or muffler shop made ones as you will NOT be happy long -- the OEM is expensive, but it FITS on the first try, and won't affect performance. After market parts are mot often junk, won't last two years. You definitely have a bad exhaust -- the noise in the back is indeed a muffler with no interior baffles anymore. Peter

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 2, Issue 190
Good point, Andrew. Also remember than any restriction in line with the ALDA will reduce part-throttle power, as the ALDA will get a delayed signal from the charge pipe. This was the fix Mercedes foisted upon the 1986/1987 models to correct a lean surge with the cruise control. It's shown in the FSM complete with restriction orifice, an extra switchover valve, and a bunch more plumbing. TIA -- Casey Biodiesel: '87 300TD intercooler (206k)

Our first three kids had second grade teacher who couldn't spell - every time we walked into the room we corrected a word on the board. Otherwise, she was excellent. The kids ended up with excellent spelling skills. They all had 4.0's from high school, one got into Yale and is working on her PhD in English. Bottom line - you are responsible for our kids education regardless of where they go to school. Parents have to be involved with the homework. Re: [MBZ] 140's, new cars, degrading wiring etc
About the wiring problem, I'd expect all years to have that issue. On the W124, every model between 1992-95 had this issue. The replacement harnesses you buy today, brand-new, are made of the SAME stuff and will have the SAME problem in another 10+ years. (Hey - don't shoot the messenger, OK?) Did they change materials mid-stream on the W140? I don't know for sure but I highly doubt it. If the car you buy does not have the harness already replaced, plan to replace it. On the W124's, it's mostly just the harness that goes from the CAN box to the engine itself (injectors, sensors, TBA, etc). The alternator harness was toast on my car too - major PITA to replace. The body harness (to headlights, etc) is normally NOT affected, which is good, because that harness is stupidly expensive. All the harness prices can vary widely based on year and specific model... for example, the 500E harness is about double a 300E harness (ouch). Here's a photo of my original alternator harness: http://www.w124performance.com/images/cars/94_E500/restoration/starter_harness_old.jpg And here's the new one: http://www.w124performance.com/images/cars/94_E500/restoration/starter_harness_new1.jpg Luckily it was 'only' $150 and 'only' took about 6 weeks to arrive from Germany... my E500 had the engine harness replaced by a previous owner and so far is not showing signs of failure again. :-) -- Date: Sat, 30 Jul 2005 10:39:29 -0500 From: Kaleb C. So lets see... a) 92/93+ had shimmy problems, fixed that by redoing suspension system which lowered the car an inch or so. b) expect the oem expensive blower regulator to fail, third-party or later regulators come with bigger heat sinks c) boshe vacuum pump () under passenger rear seat packs it in, that controls trunk door locks d) biodegradable wiring, this might have changed in 98? Someone on benzworld.org had a 600SEL with an older throttle actuator with toasted wiring, yet the other throttle actuator made in 98 was fine and had different color wire. http://www.mbnz.org/forums/forums/thread-view.asp? tid=1202133start=1fid=13 Some options where deleted in 95 (I think) then added back, really you want a 98 or 99 which apparently fixes many things.
Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 2, Issue 190
Not sure if you were CC'd Dave, but Andrew came up with a rather elegant solution; tee in a vacuum check valve, into the boost line, which would avoid trapping pressure in the aneroid chamber. This would vent manifold vacuum from a separate source, rather than the ALDA. Another additional option might be to source the ALDA boost signal right at the turbo, which might help avoid boost lag due to IC plumbing losses. On 7/30/05, Dave M. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Good point, Andrew. Re: [MBZ] Replacing traling arm bushings
yep, thats how you do it without removing the whole thing. John Robbins wrote: Is there any decent way to remove the trailing arm bushings without dropping the entire rear subframe? Re: [MBZ] Replacing traling arm bushings
you do not need a spring compressor to do the rear, the springs are under very little tension and simply fall out when you lower the subframe. Peter Frederick wrote: You will need to drop the subframe down on the side you are replacing the bushing, else you cannot remove the outer bolt. Period, not way around it. You can leave the other side up -- loosen diff mount and front subframe mount on the side you are changing. It only need to drop far enough to get the bolt out. You also need a Klann or identical internal spring compressor to safely remove the control arm -- the spring will be under considerable compression when it jumps out of the seat otherwise, very unsafe.
