Re: [MBZ] A/C O-Rings
You can get AC oring assortments at just about any parts store. When you put the new Oring on, DO NOT lubricate it with ester or PAG oil used with r134a, they will dry the new oring out and it will leak before long. get a can of old style R12 mineral oil and lubricate the new orings with that before installing. Check around. Most places want about $30 for a qt of the stuff, O'reilly's had it for around $12 a qt last time i had to buy a can a couple of months ago If you have a fitting too hard to turn, Stop, get a can of Aero Kroil, http://www.kanolabs.com/ soak the fitting down for a few days, re spray it once in a while, then go after it. ---Robert Bill Gallagher wrote: > My A/C has a slow leak since conversion to the new R. Re: [MBZ] 02 sensor?? Where?
I had a look around the exhaust manifold with no luck, tried to find a wire to trace ect. I checked on Rusty's site and I think he has them for about $100 or so, and I think that's with the wire and exact fit, so no splicing or anything. I have one of those sockets with a slit in the side, that allows the wire to fit through. You have to remove it and readjust it so the wire doesn't get to twisted, but they work well. I bought a meter to read dwell and the 02 seems ok, in that you can see it work, but I've read that as they age, they can appear to work, but they work slower in making adjustments. The car was rich enough too when I first to it, that I fear a lot of the crap has gone down stream and probably gummed things up a little. Well, it's on the list of things to change, so I know I've done the work and if future problems come up, I can rule it out. The car does have lots of miles and I don'tknwo when it was last changed. I've seen them on other cars with over 100K and still perfect. thanks Hendrik. Re: [MBZ] For W115 Experts *ONLY*
On my 74, it would start in any gear, but the wiring on that thing was futzed to no end. But check under the shift boot (where the reverse light switch is). Could it be because of the "safety interlock" switch that wouldn't let you start the car without the seatbelt fastened? Most 115's have had this fixed, but some haven't. www.leatherique.com Tell George I sent you and that you're on a Mercedes list - he'll give you a good deal (I get nothing from this other than to let him know I'm spreading the word as a courtesy - he's a really nice guy and very good businessman.) You'll have to snip a small piece of the leather from under the seat or some other area that's out of sight and send it to him so they can match the crack filler and dye to your leather. Believe it or not, you'll sand (yes, I said "sand") the leather to rough it up, spread the filler just like body putty, let it dry, they apply the dye. George and Krystal will walk you through it if you need help - it's not hard to do. Dan Ready for the edge of your seat? Check out tonight's top picks on Yahoo! On my 74, there was a relay under the drivers side of the dash, just to the left of the steering wheel. I pulled the relay and inserted a jumper wire, as I recall. I am also the one that suggested you check the AC/Start relay on the firewall, which as you state is not the problem. Re: [MBZ] 02 sensor?? Where?
Well yes you can change it, or you can test it to see if it is working. Genuine MB sensors are expensive but aftermarket ones can be used. If you are really keen to chnage it, have a look at your exhaust system, usually it is just in front of the cat (alytic converter) or it could be closer to the exhaust manifold. It should have a shield around it and require a 22 mm(?) ring spanner to undo and they are usually VERY tight so make sure you get a real good grip on it. The procedure is to undo the wiring to the O2 sensor and then feed the wires through the ring spanner, make sure you use a combination spanner so you can get another large spanner onto the 22 mm one. It is NOT advisable to use a hammer to whack the spanner. - Original Message - From: "E M" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Sent: Monday, July 23, 2007 10:23 AM Subject: [MBZ] 02 sensor?? Re: [MBZ] Welder, again
Well, tried out the Harbor Freight welder today. Worked OK I guess, I have nothing to compare it to and no prior experience, but I was able to get a patch of 1/8" steel welded onto the mower deck where I needed it. Observations -- the wire drive housing is entirely made of plastic except for the pinch rollers. Worked OK though. It has four current settings, controled by two switches, i.e. a binary code: 00, 01, 10, or 11. Sorry, couldn't help injecting a little computer humor. The power cord is not near long enough, it's about 6 feet or so. Sort of makes it hard to achieve the recomendation in the manual to work at least 35 feet away from any combustible material. I'm going to replace it with about 20 feet of heavier gauge, so I can weld out in the driveway. The ground clamp is low quality, like the clamp on a set of low-end jumper cables. Need to upgrade that at some point. The hand-held face shield it came with worked OK but I'll have to get a proper welding helmet if I end up using this thing regularly. Could not tell if the deck was galvanized and could not find a respirator anywhere that was open today so I set up a fan and positioned myself "upwind" of where I was welding. In the early 1970's we broke a distributor rotor in the Travelall on the way home from vacation. Died within 100 yards of a service station, or dad managed to coast there. It was the Sunday before Labor Day. Service station did not have a distributor rotor for a V8 International truck engine, but they did have five minute E*POX*Y. 15 minutes later, we were on the road again. It got us home, I can't remember if dad replaced it after we got home or left it in the truck until the next tune-up. It's been a while since I recall seeing this topic, so I thought I'd make sure that it remains forefront in our minds ;-) Two weeks ago the SDL started loping at idle - not enough to see the tach needle swing, but enough to be disconcerting. Two days ago the ACC stopped working - totally. No response to any button. The indicator light for the mono valve stayed off. A few years ago, on advise from this list, I purchased a couple of complete fuse replacement kits from Rusty. This seemed like a good time to install one - Rather than attempt to even determine which fuses might be suspect, I proceeded to replace all the fuses in the fuse box under the hood (bonnet for those not in the US). As I removed one fuse that was quite blown, I looked it up and found it to be for the ACC, among other circuits. The ACC works fine now, and the engine idles smooth and steady as you could ask for. Be darned sure you don't overtorque the pan bolts. They only need something like 14 inch-pounds (NOT ft-lbs!) I've seen more tranny pans that are all wacked out of square than I care to recall because some ham-handed idiot was using a 3/8" or 1/2" ratchet to tighten the pan bolts (present company excepted, of course.) Re: [MBZ] OT JB Weld repair experiences
I used quick steel to fix a motorcylcle engine case and it never leaked a drop. Met a gent in Alabama with a D9 Cat..Kept blowing head gaskets for some reason or another, I was a teenager and had no clue about a diesel then. He cleaned the hell out of it and applied a layer of JB where the gasket belonged, tightened the bolts and ran it that way for several months when he finnally blew a track and decided to junk it. He took all of the head bolts out and started the engine and it ran that way!! The head actually stayed on the engine even when he revved it up and let it set there and run full throttle for over an hour before it ran out of fuel. The moral of the story; make sure it is clean, clean, clean before applying JB and it will work well. Mike > Yeah, on this bike frame repair, I believe I used regular JB, not the > Kwik stuff. I've tried it, its okay, nothing special. Harder to get apps for than Mepis or the other "normal" linux distros. These folks seem to have undertaken the task of making a "user-friendly" desktop oriented BSD distribution, and based on what I read they are doing rather well (though the distribution is still in BETA status). [MBZ] OT JB Weld repair experiences
Yeah, on this bike frame repair, I believe I used regular JB, not the Kwik stuff. I didn't really get in there and scrape things or prepare it much though. JB Kwik story: Driving my 68 Coronet from MN to MD, I had an alternator bolt fly out at speed and be thrown by the fan into the radiator (I didn't use correct spacers). Lost the belt and now had a leak in rad. and no alternator charging. Pulled over at an all night truck stop somewhere in KS. One of those things that lets me know someone up there is looking out for me, since I had no AAA, and no cel phone and no extra money. Even if I could call a tow truck, I could not pay him or anyone else! The belt was still present on the vehicle (hanging around water pump?) and intact. AND the alternator bolt was laying on the cross member. AND I had with me all my earthly belongings save what I left behind - which means I had not only my tools but my fastener collection. After trying a tube of stop leak from the truck stop, I pulled out the JB Kwik that I had intentionally bought for emergencies. I applied it to the area of the hole in the rad. And since it was a cool night, I pulled the car over by where I found an electrical outlet. I plugged in my trouble light and placed it right next to the repair to warm it up. Went to sleep in car - me and my faithful pooch and a couple cans of beer. Not only did I have a trouble-free rest of the trip, but that repair is still holding some 8 years later! Tom, Thanks, that's a lot of GREAT info and I'll be sure to bookmark the link too. One of my engineering friends who also vintage races old cars had a really good book, just on bolts, fasteners etc. Went into detail about how a lug bolt is designed to have some "bend" so as to cushion the shock or hitting curbs, or in the vent of a crash, less likely that the whole wheel will snap off. I can't get him to part with that book though!! :-) Again, thanks for the info Tom Regards, Ed 300E...which is about to get waxed today. :-) On 22/07/07, Tom Hargrave <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Ed, > > Fasteners have a dry torque setting and a wet (lubricated) torque setting. > > When you tighten any fastener to a specific torque, you are really > pre-tenseling the bolt shaft - it stretches & acts like a spring and the > spring tension keeps everything locked together. Re: [MBZ] [OT] Close Calls -- WAS -- tool quality.
I was called in to do a forensic analysis of an 800A 480V 3 phase automatic transfer switch that an electrician had dropped an adjustable wrench in - live. The wrench fell into the switch, landed across 2 of the mains lugs, vaporized, the slag blowing back up into the mechanism, shorting across the remaining lug on the load side, causing an explosion of such force that the major components of the ATS literally blew out of the cabinet - on top of the electrician. He had 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his face, shoulders and torso. I saw the pictures. Yuck. He was lucky he lived. Then again, maybe not. I'm sure he was permanently disfigured and spent a lot of days in severe pain being treated. Ouch. My uncle used to be a DC crane repairman at Bethlehem Steel (Lackawanna, NY). These are the cranes that reach out into the yard & pick up 100's of tons of steel at a time. Re: [MBZ] Anti-sieze on wheel lug threads (was: [OT] tool quality.)
Ed, Fasteners have a dry torque setting and a wet (lubricated) torque setting. When you tighten any fastener to a specific torque, you are really pre-tenseling the bolt shaft - it stretches & acts like a spring and the spring tension keeps everything locked together. This is why you can cut off the head of a rounded off bolt then you can easily unscrew the threaded shaft. That is unless the bolt is locked in with corrosion, which is a completely different issue. Some fasteners, like head bolts, have a maximum stretch because the manufacturers understand that the bolts can loose their tensile strength if stretched too far. This is why Mercedes instructs you to measure the fastener length before reusing them. Fasteners like head bolts are spec'd wet (lightly oiled) because lubricated torque is more repeatable. Wet torque settings are lower than dry torque settings because the lubricant helps to overcome the thread friction and you need less torque to reach the proper pre-tenseling of the bolt shaft. In other words, a fastener that has a 85 pound feet dry torque spec may only have a 75 pound feet wet torque spec. The following web site does a better job of explaining torque specs than I can. Look up a 1/2-20 bolt in the chart then look across to the 5 column (SAE 5). You'll note that the dry torque is 90 pound feet while the wet torque is only 65 pound feet. The same fastener in SAE 8 is spec'd at 120 dry / 90 wet. There is also a de-rating chart on the bottom - Anti-sieze is not on the chart & I don't know how much it de-rates the torque setting. They also mention that a bolt that has been over tightened can be as lethal as one that has not been tightened enough. Why? Because you can weaken the bolt enough to make it shear off or make the threads fail. http://www.raskcycle.com/techtip/webdoc14.html Thanks, Tom Hargrave www.kegkits.com 256-656-1924 -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of E M Sent: Sunday, July 22, 2007 9:11 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Anti-sieze on wheel lug threads (was: [OT] tool quality.) Like ya'll, I had a similar thing happen - forgive if anyone has heard this story - I was a electricians apprentice working on the USS JFK - in a small space with a 440V cabinet with 4 big cables sticking out that had been cut off. The procedure was to tape the cut ends but it had not been done. I was playing with my screwdriver waiting for my electrician to need me to do somethingg - I happened to touch a cable end with the s'driver and KaBoom! The end of the 4" s'driver disappeared in a flash of light and noise - with bits of molten metal going down my boot top. Thankfully that was the worst of my injuries. There were Navy personnel onboard who may have turned the power on disregarding the warning tags that covered the cab. I found a new career path to follow soon afterward - ;-) Larry T (67 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil PORSCHE POSTERS! youroil.net Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs . - Original Message - From: "E M" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Sent: Saturday, July 21, 2007 9:29 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] [OT] tool quality. >I did something similar a few weeks ago. The porsche goes away in the winter and I haven't had the benz a year yet, but I suspect the benz will get it's winter changes that way. I wouldn't find the right "sucker" for it, so I just did it the last twice from the bottem. It really takes no time to do it from the bottom of the benz and there's even an opening in the undertray to allow easy access to the bolt. Re: [MBZ] Anti-sieze on wheel lug threads (was: [OT] tool quality.)
Many say not to use it, but I always use a little. When I took the first wheel on my benz, you could feel and unever drag on the threads, as you often do with dry lugs. More than the treads, I like a little on the bell of the bolt, where it meets the rim. A little goes a long way, as you get near the end of the threads and the bell starts to seat, and drags, I don't know how you get a really accurate torque without a little AS. That's what I do anyway, and I haven't worped a rotor or lost a wheel yet. :-) ps. I think the "official" word is do them dry as many have told me. When I was in the generator business I had a rule: If I find JB Weld on your truck, you're fired. Granted, it was a liability thing, considering the nature of the equipment we serviced. That being said, a few years ago I had a pump housing on a spa pump that had become porous due to cavitation wearing out the inside. I went to WallyWorld and bought the infamous two tubes of JB Weld. Nearly 6 years later, it's still holding up. Amazing stuff. Dan --- Curt Raymond <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Did you use JB Weld or JB Kwik? If you can install XP, you can install all but the most arcane linux distros. It's been a few years since I last set up a Debian box, but at that time their install process was not as seamless as RedHat of the same era. Most of the mainstream distros now have GUI installers with sane defaults. Go to http://www.distrowatch.com/ to see what's popular and read mini-reviews. Re: [MBZ] OT Welding Bicycle CroMoly Frames
Did you use JB Weld or JB Kwik? Weld is MUCH stronger but takes longer to set. Its also alot stronger the closer you get to a 50% mix with the hardner, more hardner makes it less strong. I've made some good repairs with JB over the years but often times it takes alot of it... In this case did you grind away the old weld material? If you're just putting a skim over the top it won't work. You'd also have to rough up the existing metal alot. I like to cut slots across the break to give the JB Weld something to stick to. -Curt Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2007 19:36:07 -0700 From: "Zoltan Finks" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT Welding Bicycle CroMoly Frames To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed No, I tried this months ago - maybe a year or so ago. Re: [MBZ] [OT] tool quality.
Probably they've been sued a few times for leaving the lugs loose. So getting the wrench to click proves that they are at least at a minimum torque, probably a lot more. Once they get sued a few times for bending wheels by over/incorrect tightening, they might take the time to do it right. The tire shop I go to does hand-tighten the lugs. They only use the air gun to speed up removal. Re: [MBZ] lug bolt removal
I've got a Craftsman 19.2v drill set and as soon as funds allow I'm going to supliment it with an impact wrench. A friend has a 12v Snap-on impact wrench thats terrific just almost as powerful as a good air impact. With luck the 19.2v Craftsman will as impressive. -Curt Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2007 21:47:42 -0400 From: "LarryT" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] lug bolt removal To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Don't have any personal experience, but previous discussions on other lists have had several people talking about these 12v impact wrenches. here's one: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=92349 not as cumbersome as an X-Wrench and I'm told the torque is impressive. Re: [MBZ] [OT] tool quality.
Pretty much. They flex above a certain torque value. It's good that they are using them, however, all cars don't have the same lug nut/bolt torque. As soon as I get home from a tire replacement or wheel removal, I bust 'em all loose and retorque them to spec myself. I also use anti-seize on the threads (don't EVER get it on the shoulders of the nuts/bolts!) Dan --- Rich Thomas <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > How do those things work? Re: [MBZ] OT Welding Bicycle CroMoly Frames
AFAIK and I admittedly don't TIG weld, welding 4130 with TIG is the same as welding mild steel, same welder and filler, no special rod required. The only time you need special rod is if you're arc welding 4130. -Curt Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2007 18:15:01 -0700 From: "Zoltan Finks" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT Welding Bicycle CroMoly Frames To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Hey, I would tool on down there with my ol' bike in trunk of 240D and take you up on your offer if you're game. Re: [MBZ] [OT] Linux drivers wanted
Hendrik, You can save yourself some aggravation by doing a few things. First get Avast antivirus. It's FREE and is constantly updated! http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html You need to register to get a key but that's it! No hassles no bull. Also get Kerio Personal Firewall if you're on anything but a dialup or if there's no firewall built into your router: http://filehippo.com/download_kerio_personal_firewall/?468 And, hopefully, you're using Firefox not Internet Explorer. If not, go here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/ These should solve all your problems.
