It's true. I have done a couple oil changes, but I don't have to get my

The others go to the shop. . After a $1500 head gasket job, that Durango's
still overheating. I'm so glad I didn't get involved in that one, way out
of my league! I did suggest a radiator flush and flow test in the
beginning, and now that all other cooling system components have been
replaced, my suggestion may actually be followed through if it isn't too
late.

Most newer cars, IMO, are clunkers compared to the old 300SD.  I wouldn't
trust either of my sisters-in-law's vehicles ('00 Dodge Durango 130Kmi or
the '95 Isuzu Rodeo 206Kmi) to go across town let alone across country!
They would both overheat and/or explode!  When they break down, it's either
the '07 Ram or the 300SD that gets used.  It's more dependable, but I can't
get either one of them to buy it from me.  It's so much easier to work on
the Mercedes!

As was mentioned, you want good winter tires. IMHO, you want 2
sandbags in the trunk too. Other than that, the 107 is as good as
any rwd car in snow. It will go anywhere until it floats on the belly pan.

I'd suggest looking for a 380SL of the later years with the double
row timing chain, unless the owner can prove they paid for a double
row chain conversion. It saves the hassle of pulling a valve cover
to find out if it has a single chain. Daughter's is a 1985. They are
a pain to get in and out of.

Re: [MBZ] Kid cars

2009-08-03 Thread Loren Faeth
All pickups are worthless in snow, unless you add 500lb to 1000 lb in
the bed. (or have and engage 4WD) As for the wet grass, you need a
better tire. Wet grass, when trying to move a lot of weight, with
little percentage of that weight on the drive axle, is about like
driving on ice.

Physics:it is true, that less weight takes lass energy to get
started, and to stop. The problem is that inadequate friction
between the drive wheels and the contact surface trumps the pure
physics. Add to that a normal differential, and you are trying to
move 10-15,000 lb of truck and trailer on the traction of the RR
tire. THere is maybe 50 sq. inches of contact area between tire and
ground to move that load.

I had a U-100 bronco that I hung a very heavy blade on. The result
was only a few hundred pounds on the rear axle, and almost all weight
on the front axle. It could barely move on dry ground in 2WD. I
added 15 4x8x16 solid cement blocks in the bed area behind the
seats, and it made a world of difference. With that weight and the
weight of the blade, the thing was unstoppable until the axles
started to plow ground. In the same way, a loaded straight truck
will go down the road safely in ice and snow that prohibits anything
but snowmobiles and large 4WD tractors. Why do you think the hwy
departments load down straight trucks and use them to plow snow? If
they were empty, they could not go anywhere.

Increasing contact area without increasing weight (adding oversize
tires) also does not work. The oversize tires float on the ice,
snow, or mud, and spin because there is not enough weight to make
good contact.

[MBZ] Restoring a W123 instrument sluster housing

Having been pulled out reinstalled half a dozen times in 26 years, the
instrument housing on my 1983 300TD has separated from the glass so there is
an ugly gap at the top. Has anyone ever tried to glue the glass back to the
plastic frame of the housing? Also, the rubber gasket came off and after I
reattached it with contact cement I couldn't squeeze the d**ned thing back
into the opening. The only fix was to rip off the gasket. Has anyone
successfully restored one of these?

The hole in the dash gaps away from the cluster, or the cluster is losing its
clear face? I think there are supposed to be metal clips holding the face on the
cluster, but it's been a while (7 years) since I had one apart.

Yes. Works well, if you don't make a mess! (And if you get it
fixed before you snap the plastic in half pulling on it the next
time. Ask me how I know!)

The gasket wasn't originally glued on. It's a big ring, did
you rip yours in half? Glue it back together off the cluster,
and forgo any glue to the cluster.

As some editor at Car and Driver (?) so aptly said once: that's why
Goodyear doesn't hire first-year physics students to design tires!
There are _many_ more factors here at work.

Worst winter traction I've ever had was in my big pickup truck,
with the original tires on. Best winter traction I've ever had
was in my big pickup truck, with aggressive tread tires and
the camper on! Amazingly good traction, no slipping even on
glare ice.

My 2 WD Ford F-250 is terrible in the snow, it gets stuck on wet grass
with my 5th wheel on (About 2,000 pin weight)

A fifth-wheel is a lot of dead weight to pull with one tire!
Works fine on the highway, though.

There is maybe 50 sq. inches of contact area between tire and ground
to move that load.

Less, I'd say. The truck probably weighs some 6000#, and it's not
evenly distributed. Call it a generous 1500#, plus half the trailer's
pin weight for 2500#. 60 PSI in the tires? That's 42 in^2 of contact
patch to push the entire combined weight around.

Re: [MBZ] Kid cars

2009-08-03 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Hi Peter:

I guess that's why my college physics class had a lab component. Theories
need to be tested out in the lab to see if they really worked! Adding a
sandbag or two to the trunk has a trivial effect on the overall weight, but
shifts the CG enough to the rear to greatly improve traction.

Some cars I've driven have done surprisingly well in the snow without any
added weight in the trunk. For example, several Volvo 122s and several
Mercedes 123s I have owned. Others were transformed by adding even one
sandbag to the trunk, such as a police model Chevy Caprice (1990?) I used to
drive.

In what snow we get in OK - yes. I never had any problems driving my SLC in
snow - at least not any different from any other car i've owned.

My wife has expressed an interest in one too. Are they fairly driveable in
the snow assuming snowtires and proper weight?

Another comment on the 230SL piece gave the results from the 1964
Spa-Sofia-Liége Rally, in which a 230SL finished 3rd, proving that a 230SL
wasn't that slow after all. (winner was a Big Healey)

Then I noticed that the SL finished between a couple of 3 cylinder Saabs (would
those have been 750s or 850s in 1964?), and a 220SE finished 6th. (Mr and Mrs
Carlsson were driving the Saabs, that might make a difference. Didn't Pat die a
year or two ago?)

Re: [MBZ] Kid cars

2009-08-03 Thread Curt Raymond
More weight = greater downpressure = greater traction, the mass you're trying
to move actually has remarkably little to do with it. Notice how big trucks
have less trouble getting moving in snow than most cars...

Narrower tires help too as the weight PSI is greater than with fat tires. This
is a very common problem with fullsize pickup trucks in more recent years. Old
school skinny tires are better... The other problem I've had with 2wd trucks,
particularly those with big engines that people use for towing, is that theres
too much power making it too easy to break traction. Once you break traction
once in snow (especially wet sloppy snow and ice) you're screwed. My Dakota
wasn't great in the snow, the v8 had way too much power. My Ranger is much
better but still too powerful to be seriously good. My '88 GMC Jimmy S15 2.8l
v6 was fantastic. narrow tires (205s IIRC) and low horsepower (95hp?) plus the
5spd manual and availablity of low range made it cruise through most anything.
The SUV body was heavier than the pickup too.

You want a pickup to do better in the snow take off the bumper and cut a piece
of railroad rail to match the width of the frame rails and bolt it securely
between the rails, put the bumper back on. My uncle Reg did that on an old
Chevy he had (well it wasn't old when he did it) and the added weight helped
the balance of the truck immensely.

Re: [MBZ] Kid cars

2009-08-03 Thread Curt Raymond
You reminded me that a cement mixer loaded can go almost anywhere. When we had
the garage built at our camp we had a slab poured. The camp sits ~1/2 mile back
from the road so we had to reinforce our access road (more like a trail
really) for the truck. Interestingly the roadwork wasn't to get the truck in it
was to get it OUT.
A cement truck loaded will go anywhere. Empty it'll get stuck anywhere. Look at
how fat the tires are. They're fat like that to support the loaded weight. Take
all that weight out and they just don't have any pressure.

Our '07 4WD Dodge pickup with stock tires is useless in the snow and ice!
My mom's '06 HHR did much better on the streets during our rare Portland
snow storm last year, even those that were not plowed or packed down. It
definitely needs some aggressive tires on it.

Yes, but that will likely have a similar split between glass and housing

Having been pulled out reinstalled half a dozen times in 26 years, the
instrument housing on my 1983 300TD has separated from the glass so
there

is
an ugly gap at the top. Has anyone ever tried to glue the glass back
to

the
plastic frame of the housing? Also, the rubber gasket came off and
after

I
reattached it with contact cement I couldn't squeeze the d**ned thing
back

into the opening. The only fix was to rip off the gasket. Has anyone
successfully restored one of these?

[MBZ] check your credit card due dates

2009-08-03 Thread Allan Streib
Apparently some of the companies are playing games to (it would appear)
generate late fees.

Happened to me this month, one of my cards has always been due on the 5th of
the month this month it was due on the 2nd, for no apparent reason. I always
pay the full balance but today, obviously, I'm a day late. Technically my
fault because I did not look at the statement closely enough, but it's just
something I've come to expect card X is due on the 5th

Talking to some friends it became apparent that the same thing has been
happening to them.

I totally spaced on BOA last month, and I owe them about $17k at 0%!
Thought I'd paid them before my hard drive crash in June, usually I pay them the
same week the statement comes out. Was balancing my checking account and no BOA
pmt in June! I made the payment online the day before the statement printed,
called CS and begged for leniency. They restored the 0% and waived the late fee.
Glad it wasn't Chase or Household.

Re: [MBZ] check your credit card due dates

2009-08-03 Thread tyler
Why not switch to an honest and reputable credit union and let your old
bank know exactly why. Providian/WaMu tried stuff like this on me, and
scammed me out of a lot of money. Providian/WaMu had a policy that
payments made via debit would be held for 2 days. So my day early
payment was held for 2, and they charged me a $100 late payment fee and
jacked my rate up to 28% apr. This fee over-drafted the account, and
they charged me $50/day overdraft fees but took a whole month to notify
me so they could build up to about 2 grand. But they lost a lot more
than they made off me, because I immediately switched all of my banking
away from them to a credit union, and convinced all of my friends and
family banking with them to do the same.

My credit union charges like a $15 late fee for payments, and will
usually reverse any fee at all if you just call them up and ask nicely.
It helps that the employees know most of their owner-customers on a
first name basis.

2009-08-03 Thread brian . toscano
I use the credit card to buffer my checking account. An friend of mine booked
airline tickets and the online charged him 3 times which caused his balance to
go negative and spend a day working thru the mess. If it was a CC instead of
debit it would have been easier. The key is to pay in full each month.

Re: [MBZ] Kid cars

2009-08-03 Thread Curt Raymond
Thats an idea but as we don't have running water and don't have a big pump. I
can't imagine how long it would take to fill a cement mixer one 5 gallon bucket
at a time from the pond...

I can't even imagine how long it would take to fill a cement mixer with a
garden hose. We brought in ~8 yards of concrete (I think, might have been 6),
thats 162 cubic feet of water. Google says a gallon is .13 cubic feet which
doesn't make any sense to me because then my 8 yards of concrete is only ~22
gallons. (162*.13).
22 gallons of water doesn't weigh squat so I'm thinking my math is failing
somwhere.
8 yards * 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard (3*3*3) = 162*.13 = 22 Strange.

Anyway I wonder how the concrete truck operator would have felt about filling
up with pond water?

Re: [MBZ] Kid cars

2009-08-03 Thread Curt Raymond
The pond is the legal 75 feet away from the new structure although its also
20-25 feet higher... Still more hauling than I'd want to do.

The road needed work anyway. First day of construction the contractor hauls in
a backhoe, they drop some trees and rough out the area. Then its starts
raining. Then it starts POURING. They get something like 4 of rain in an hour.
The contractor has to call for somebody to come pick him up at the paved road.
They leave all their equipment at the farm because they're scared of getting it
stuck now that the road has turned into soup. Its 2 weeks before the area dries
out enough they can work more. He hauls in some gravel for under the slab, gets
it framed up and the rebar in. Then we proceed to have the wettest
summer/fall/winter/spring in a decade. We don't pour concrete for 1 full year
after they started earthwork. The garage sprang up in seconds compared to how
long it took for the earthwork.

Re: [MBZ] check your credit card due dates

2009-08-03 Thread LWB250

I had a credit card provider take my interest rate to usury (26-28%) over a
bank error, which they even admit they knew about. No amount of pleading,
begging or rationalization would sway them - this was last July.

I let it ride until this month, when I went back to them and suggested that
they should lower my rate back to where it was, expecting another stonewall
job. I also mentioned that I had two balance transfer offers sitting on my
desk (this is for a relatively small balance, I might add.)

Suddenly they were my friend again. My rate was adjusted back to where it had
been.

playing games to (it would appear) generate late fees.

Happened to me this month, one of my cards has always been
due on the 5th of the month this month it was due on the

[MBZ] 300D Water leakage

2009-08-03 Thread Rhonald Angelo

On Sunday morning, about 3 a.m. we got a downpour in the Washington, DC area.
Later that morning, when I went outside, I just decided to check the area
behind the drivers seat...Ias I noticed a bit of water before...back in late
June when there was so much rain.

This time I had about 3 inches of water. On the way to suck out the water with
a vac, you could hear it sloshing around..like being in a boat. WHERE is this
water coming from? The hood drain holes are clear. THere is no water under
the mat in front, and nothing in the front or back on the passenger side. The
trunk is dry. I had the rear drivers door cover off some years ago to repair
the hinge, and read it you don't put it back precisely, water cdan get in, but
the guys at my repair shop say that has nothing to do with it. I had the front
and back window sealed when a bit of water was seeping in during hard rain at
high speed. I was not driving in the rain on Sunday; I got back from Richmond
before it began raining. I don't know where to look.

Thanks

Why not switch to an honest and reputable credit union and let your old
bank know exactly why. Providian/WaMu tried stuff like this on me, and
scammed me out of a lot of money. Providian/WaMu had a policy that
payments made via debit would be held for 2 days. So my day early payment
was held for 2, and they charged me a $100 late payment fee and jacked my
rate up to 28% apr. This fee over-drafted the account, and they charged me
$50/day overdraft fees but took a whole month to notify me so they could
build up to about 2 grand. But they lost a lot more than they made off me,
because I immediately switched all of my banking away from them to a
credit union, and convinced all of my friends and family banking with them
to do the same.

My credit union charges like a $15 late fee for payments, and will usually
reverse any fee at all if you just call them up and ask nicely. It helps
that the employees know most of their owner-customers on a first name
basis.

Hi all -
Along with the change in due dates they will also change the address to
send the payment to. I use Bill Pay thru my bank and was hit with a late
fee ($39) because it arrived a day too late.

Two words for credit card companies -- Highway bandits.

I'm in the process of selling some stock and paying off/closing the
cards that charge more than 6.99% APR. I plan to live on the debit card -
no more charging - just debit. It's way to easy to carry a balance - then
it grows and grows.

My biggest problem was building a lifestyle around my professional
career - which wasn't a problem because my income covered my expenses and
allowed some savings too. Then I became disabled and had to go on SS
Disability. It pays pretty good ( not good enough considering all I paid
into the system over 30 years) -- compared to what I used to bring home
it's around 20%. It takes some budgeting finesse to pay the bills on
time. Couldn't do it without my wife working as a RN - glad she went to
school when the kids were grown - it was like an insurance policy.

Naturally it's best to live as modestly as possible - you never know
when things will go to $hit and it'll be totally out of your control.

Having her health insurance is almost as valuable as her take home pay.

But no more charge cards for me - ;-)

The pond is the legal 75 feet away from the new structure although its also
20-25 feet higher... Still more hauling than I'd want to do.

The road needed work anyway. First day of construction the contractor hauls
in a backhoe, they drop some trees and rough out the area. Then its starts
raining. Then it starts POURING. They get something like 4 of rain in an
hour. The contractor has to call for somebody to come pick him up at the
paved road. They leave all their equipment at the farm because they're
scared of getting it stuck now that the road has turned into soup. Its 2
weeks before the area dries out enough they can work more. He hauls in some
gravel for under the slab, gets it framed up and the rebar in. Then we
proceed to have the wettest summer/fall/winter/spring in a decade. We don't
pour concrete for 1 full year after they started earthwork. The garage
sprang up in seconds compared to how long it took for the earthwork.

Re: [MBZ] check your credit card due dates

2009-08-03 Thread LWB250

Being a merchant, I just realized that a new card offer for my MC debit card
that allowed me to earn points was just a way to scam off of merchants.

Seems if you read the fine print the only time you get points are when you use
the debit card as a CC, i.e., when a merchant is paying a healthy transaction
fee.

In other words, the bank is trying to shift the debit card activity (minimal
fee revenue for bank) to the credit card side, which generates a lot more
revenue for them.

I cut it up and continue to use my regular debit card.

[MBZ] Aux Fan Switch

2009-08-03 Thread LarryT
I finally got around to locating and testing the low speed Aux Fan Switch (next
to the Dryer) - with the ign on, the AC on I pulled the wires back a little so
I could place a screwdriver blade across the spade connections. Nothing. That
should have started the fan/s in Low SPeed mode. Testing the Temperature sw.
which is near the Cam gear, could be done the same way but I didn't test that
one. Its pretty new - got one from Rusty last year. In an case I need to
resolve the low speed problem 1st.

The question is, it looks like removing the Aux Fan Sw (also called Pressure
Sw) screws into the AC freon line next to the dryer.

Am I correct to assume removing the Pressure Sw would release Freon into the
atmosphere?

If so, (and I suspect it is) I'd rather let someone with the right equipment
take a whack at it.

Sound about right?
Thx -

On Sunday morning, about 3 a.m. we got a downpour in the Washington, DC
area. Later that morning, when I went outside, I just decided to check the
area behind the drivers seat...Ias I noticed a bit of water before...back in
late June when there was so much rain.

This time I had about 3 inches of water. On the way to suck out the water
with a vac, you could hear it sloshing around..like being in a boat. WHERE
is this water coming from? The hood drain holes are clear. THere is no
water under the mat in front, and nothing in the front or back on the
passenger side. The trunk is dry. I had the rear drivers door cover off
some years ago to repair the hinge, and read it you don't put it back
precisely, water cdan get in, but the guys at my repair shop say that has
nothing to do with it. I had the front and back window sealed when a bit of
water was seeping in during hard rain at high speed. I was not driving in
the rain on Sunday; I got back from Richmond before it began raining. I
 don't know where to look.

 Thanks

Re: [MBZ] 300D Water leakage

2009-08-03 Thread Peter Frederick
Sunroof drains, cowl drains both sides at the outside, front and rear
window seals.

All will leak down the front door pillar, through the firewall, or
behind the dash and rear cover, respectively, with the water ending
up on the rear seat floor as it's the lowest place.

If it's only on the driver's side, look at the cowl drain first.
These plug up with crud, then corrode through and flood the floor.
Can be repaired with POR-15. If this is the case, the floor under
the front mat will be soaked as well. Sunroof drain goes down the
front and center door pillars, and sometimes they get plugged or the
nipple corrodes through, dumping the water down the door pillar
instead of the plastic pipe and it will end up on the rear floor.
Front mat may not be wet in that case.

Windshield gaskets should be replace, anticipating some rust repair.
If they are leaking, the firewall will be wet and so will the front
mats or the area behind the rear seat.

Yeah really! What I thought I had sent as an answer to why the rubber ring
had ended up in your lap was that I have had at times an instance where the
rubber ring seems to stick on the opening in the instrument panel partially
pulling the ring from the cluster. I thought that maybe yours had done that
but to the point where it was actually pulled free from the cluster as you
pulled the cluster free from the instrument panel.

[MBZ] Some 123 parts (new) and some 113 parts (new and used) FS

2009-08-03 Thread Richard Hattaway

I'm cleaning out my garage, and have a box of new 123 parts. I want to send
them all to one person, don't want to bust up the litter. However, it's all
stuff you use if you have a 123 so one person should have an interest. My
asking price is $200 plus shipping. If you feel this it outrageous, please
make offer, I am pretty thick skinned for a fat boy...

lower ball joints X 2
coarse fuel filter X 2
performance analysis diphram repair kits X 2
muffler hangers X 2
vacuum check valve
upper and lower radiator hose
hot water pump
rear door check straps X 2
front crank seal X 2
injector heat shields X 6
screw on fuel filters X 3
epxansion valve
front brake hydraulic line
emergency brake shoe replacement kit
vacuum box.. the shutoff box, but it does not fit a 617 engine

I also have a pile of head gaskets for 127-130 engines. This is separate from
the above list, but if someone wants to make an offer on them, I can bundle the
sale. When I say pile of gaskets, I think it's about 6, not sure exactly.

I also have a few injectors laying around. They are not new, nor matched, but
were pulled from a running engine. Let's say there are 4 but it may be 5. If
you're interested make me a per injector offer for what I have. If it's more
than 5 you get the rest free. Include about 3 bux per injector for shipping.
I will bust up the injectors if someone only wants 1 but prefer only one trip
to the UPS store, so jump in. Remember, thick skin.. fat boy..

Other things in the garage that are going to Ebay unless someone stops me, a
set of standard size pistons for M127, with rings, a 230SL LH Mirror, used but
certainly useable, rechrome for new appearance. A jumpseat for a 230SL,
complete with the little knurled knob that holds em in ( red, need recovering
). A set of bearing inserts for a M127, Actually I think there are two sets,
but not sure. One of them is 'standard' and one may be undersized. I have a
water pump casting, and some casting off the side of the block with what
appears to be a two section temperature sensor in it.

All the 123 stuff is new. The 113 stuff is new and used, pistons/brgs are new
for sure. The headgaskets are new. The 113 stuff is offered as a lot or
individually. The 123 stuff is by the lot.

If you're interested, please drop me an email *OFF LIST* since I do *NOT* read
every post in the list. I'll answer one on list, if I see it, but it's first
come first serve so the off list will be the best way.

Remember, thick skin, fat boy. Gotta clean the garage, sold the house today.

Ha! So that rubber strip just sort of sits there, unglued? How did
it fall

into my lap?

Every one I've seen is a big fat rubber band that goes _around_
the cluster. Yours probably got stuck on (welded) to the IC,
and then tore apart in some removal, leaving only a strip still
stuck to it. That finally came loose?

Re: [MBZ] Kid cars

2009-08-03 Thread Jim Cathey
doesn't make any sense to me because then my 8 yards of concrete is
only ~22 gallons. (162*.13).

Units work. Always check the units. Basic algebra,
and standard engineering practice. Follow it and get
your probes intact to Mars, etc.

8 yd^3 * 27 ft^3/yd^3 * .13 ft^3/gal

(This is easier to do visually on paper, with vertical fractions.)

Ignoring the numbers, multiply (cancel) the units that match
top and bottom. yd^3 gone, good. But you're left with ft^6/gal,
which is not a sensible result. If we change that last multiply
to a divide, then the ft^3 goes away too, leaving gallons as the
only unit standing. That's what you want, so then run the numbers
too. (8*27)/.13 = 1662 gallons.

22 gallons of water doesn't weigh squat so I'm thinking my math is
failing somwhere.

Doesn't exactly fill a dump truck, either, so yes.

A pint's a pound the world around, so
1662 gallons * 8 pints/gallon * 1 lb/pint
leaves only pounds, so that'd be 13292#,
which is enough to notice! Or if you prefer:

13292 lb / 2000 lb/ton

Units remaining is tons, so 6.6 tons.

Anyway I wonder how the concrete truck operator would have felt about
filling up with pond water?

If it didn't take too long I'm sure he wouldn't mind. They've
got to have a place to dump out back at the yard, since they
wash 'em out there anyway.
