The common practice is for someone to visit Europe and the OEM suppliers.
They will sell you anything you want and nearly all come with the MB parts
sticker on them. Put together a container sized order (or several and ship
it here, mark the prices up to cover overhead profit, advertise and you're
in the MB parts business. The power of bulk pricing comes in and prices
fall.

Naturally, there's risk involved...

Oh man, couldn't agree more! The Motor Voter law was a huge mistake IMHO.
If people can't be bothered to use a little energy to seek out the Voter
Registration Agency and become a registered voter then they shouldn't be
allowed to vote! Same with using a little energy to find and visit a local
voting booth on the appropriate day and cast your vote for the person of
your choice.

Making it so easy that it becomes a click of a mouse demeans the process
IMO. It's he most important thing we do to maintain democracy and it
doesn't need to be placed on automatic.

I dislike low voter turnout as much as the next guy but it's a personal
decision to vote/not vote. People must be made to appreciate the things
others have done to guarantee our right to vote. Just adding names to the
voter rolls doesn't make people realize the importance of voting in general
and *their* vote in particular.

All of our neighbors had no flood insurance. Granted they still have

give thanks for the fact that we did have flood insurance as it seems
it will turn out OK for the most part. Still it is not near enough to
rebuild or replace what was lost and temporary housing is not part of
the policy. Having our health is the key. The worst of it is the loss
of family pictures and the like. The rest is just stuff, including the

[MBZ] Frankenheap weldery

The heap's been getting kind of noisy lately, so yesterday
I jacked it up and dropped the exhaust system. Full of holes!
The top of the pipe where it goes into the muffler was half
gone. I used the $50 Hobart wire-feed welder to stitch some
scraps of exhaust pipe metal (new, from cutoffs) over the worst
of the holes, and put it back. That took four hours. The smoke
wrench was required to heat the retaining nuts red-hot so that
they could be removed intact. Not all holes were addressed,
but the big ones were and I was sick of it by then. That damned
salt! I really need a new exhaust system, but those aren't cheap
[but I am] and where's the fun in that?

The exhaust was a single piece that couldn't be removed
from the car unless it was perhaps very high in the air.

So, 36 ohms?

What should the resistance reading be?

It's a 400 W heater that runs on 120 VAC.

Since Power = Current x Voltage (P = I E),

   P 400
  I = --- = - = 3.33 A
   E 120

From Ohm's Law,

E 120
  E = I R  =  R = --- = -- = 36 ohms
I 3.33

You can also combine the formula for power and Ohm's Law algebraically
before substituting in numbers. You end up with,

 2
   E 120 * 120
 R = - = --- = 36 ohms
   P 400

Re: [MBZ] how to check block heater

2010-01-10 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Im not thinking its working because i had it plugged in for a couple of
hours yesterday and it did not help with the starting, although I think
the bigger problem was the batteries (2) were low. I put in on the
charger for about half an hour and it started up after some cranking.
Has to crank longer because it does have some dead glow plugs. It was
so cold I did not feel like doing too much more research than that.

LWB250 wrote:

Why wouldn't you just plug it in and after about 30 minutes put your hand on
the side of the engine to see if it's warm?

If you have power to the plug then the heater is probably open. A quick test
with an ohmmeter or test light would reveal the condition

How do you check to see if a

block heater is any good? Put a volt meter on it and
check resistance?

Pretty good way. The _best_ way is to plug it into a
wattmeter, like the ubiquitous (and inexpensive)
Kill-A-Watt.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Economics (was Sulfur good?)

2010-01-10 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Speaking of low voter turnout, our county recently had a vote on a tax
to pay for a new court house. The old one was built in the 30's, and
has been remodeled several times in the past. It could stand to have
some work done to it, maybe expand it a little. So, the vote for this
tax is to pay for tearing down the old one and building a new one. It
passed. Out of 50K registered voters in the county, less than 3000 voted.

LarryT wrote:
You wrote Only land owners with a high school graduation B+ should be

Oh man, couldn't agree more! The Motor Voter law was a huge mistake
IMHO. If people can't be bothered to use a little energy to seek out
the Voter Registration Agency and become a registered voter then they
shouldn't be allowed to vote! Same with using a little energy to
find and visit a local voting booth on the appropriate day and cast
your vote for the person of your choice.

Making it so easy that it becomes a click of a mouse demeans the
process IMO. It's he most important thing we do to maintain democracy
and it doesn't need to be placed on automatic.

I dislike low voter turnout as much as the next guy but it's a
personal decision to vote/not vote. People must be made to appreciate
the things others have done to guarantee our right to vote. Just
adding names to the voter rolls doesn't make people realize the
importance of voting in general and *their* vote in particular.

I don't see where there is enough slack in the attached wires to allow getting

2010-01-10 Thread Dieselhead
I don't know the specifics of installing the kit. I think if you
unhook the battery and unscrew the fusebox, that one wire attaches to
the hot end of the fuseblock at #16, and goes out to the inner
fender. Then the new strip fuse holder, then the wire to the blower.
The wire to the blower may go back into the fuse box and hook on the
terminal at the other end of the #16 fuse.

I know my 86 SDL did not have the external fuse ubtil after the
fusebox melted. Then the PO had it installed. The burgundy 87 did
have the external fusebox and the current 87 does not have it.

I don't see where there is enough slack in the attached wires to allow

Right. The Kalifornia government just doesn't want you to buy a new

elsewhere. In fact, owning an older diesel is less of a hassle there

plenty of 123, 124, and 126 diesels in the Silicon Valley area.

The only thing that makes a democracy work, is an INFORMED voting populous.
You CANNOT be informed by watching TV, and the newpapers are not much

 What a babble of BS.

I retire and move into a rental condo after working 40 years after my 4

And some rectum wants to take my right to vote away?

Where the chuck is the righteous outrage on this?

they are still selling for 2.59 everywhere else is 2.66-2.69, I get in
it to start, click, nothing. I know exactly what it is, those side post
battery connectors tend to loosen up after a while, so I go to open the
hood and it wont open. Crap. Sometimes it will stick but if I slam the
drivers door, it pops open. No suck luck today. I finally got it to
open after about 5 min of messing with it. Jiggled the bat cable on one
of the batteries, and it fired right up.

2010-01-10 Thread Wonko the Sane
Lots of good electrical theory answers, but here is a good way to tell. Put
an ohmmeter on it. If you read an open, it is broken. If you get some
resistance, it is probably working.

The heating element probably won't change in resistance value - it is quite
binary (working or broken).

Folks make things SO difficult.

with the notion that this is any longer a particularly free country. as
long as the american people continue to capitulate to tyranny, we will
become less and less free. no number of innocent iraqis tortured or

Re: [MBZ] diesel fuel supplement

2010-01-10 Thread Curt Raymond
I use diesel Kleen, its good stuff.

As Marshall said an additive when you've got a problem might be worth the time,
otherwise its not...
I put a shot in each car every fall and again in the spring to drive out any
water (which shouldn't be a problem for me since the cars really don't sit) and
occasionally if I notice rough running, maybe once every other year, say around
40,000 miles.
My 240D once I thought had bad motor mounts. Then I found a bottle of Diesel
Kleen I'd forgotten I had. I ran the tank down low and put the whole dammed
bottle in (it treats some absurdly large amount of fuel when used correctly.
Ran it through and refueled. Within a day the engine shake had improved 100%.

I like it but I'm not going to run it every day to improve mileage thats
snake oil I think.

amazed. One guy called, said he didn't have a clue what was going on, It
was hot and I was dealing with a greyhound bus that wouldn't start, I told
him the secret wiggle he said thanks, he tried it , it worked. I hung up
and didn't think about it again. Two weeks later I get a check in the mail
for $250 bucks and a note that said you saved my vacation thanks.

[MBZ] OT - paper pilots licenses will expire

2010-01-10 Thread OK Don
I just found out that the old paper pilots license will become obsolete in
March - you have to apply for a replacement license to get the new valid
license ---

From the EAA newsletter:
Pilots who still have not replaced their old paper pilot certificate should
do so now or risk being unable to exercise their hard-earned privileges in
the not-too-distant future. All paper pilot certificates will expire after
March 31, 2010. FAR 61.19(h) reads: Except for a temporary certificate
issued under §61.17 or a student pilot certificate issued under paragraph
(b) of this section, the holder of a paper pilot certificate issued under
this part may not exercise the privileges of that certificate after March
31, 2010.

Click
herehttp://www.eaaonline.org/ls.cfm?r=198572584sid=8337568m=902394u=ExAAs=http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/airmen_certification/certificate_replacement/to
replace your airmen certificate. The FAA says to allow 4 to 6 weeks
for
mail processing and 7 to 10 days for online processing so don't delay!

I just applied for mine - it was painless (other than the $2) on-line. The
last one I received was in 1973 when I got the glider endorsement.

That's a good idea. I'll have to clean things really good to
determine which is the primary culprit/s. Usually the engine is
pretty clean but it's been so cold that I haven't been able to rinse
it off. At the moment there's a thin film of diesel around all 5 DV
hold down clamps.

BTW, what kind of noise should I be listening for? I wonder how the
factory/dealer does them to make sure they do it right the first
time (also know as DIRTFT) ? I'm sure the factory uses a special
tool to screw all 5 or 6 in at once, but if I'm very careful with my
torque wrench I should be able to duplicate the torque on each DV
pretty precisely, I think.

I suspect the 3 stage procedure for torqueing is to insure accuracy
so there must have been problems in the past. Is the metal on the
IP where the DV's are installed perhaps soft which could lead to
inaccurate settings? Just curious ---

According to my recollection of Marshall Booth's descriptions, it is
possible to follow correct torque procedure (30Nm - release - 30Nm -
release - 35Nm - lockdown) and still warp the IP body, which
requires a

re-do.

My idea of doing one at a time (when doing them all) would help you
determine which one had warped the IP body. I admit I've only
rebuilt
all of them at once on two different motors, and on neither motor
did I
start the engine between each DV rebuilt. Both were OM60x engines
and
on neither did I have any problems, but a thought experiment lead
me to
believe that an engine start to listen to the IP between each DV
might

be wise. Could be either too difficult or worthless if you have the
intake manifold off when you re-start and can't hear anything
different

because of the extra noise from the intake openings in the head.

Maybe you should only do the leaking DV's in order to reduce the
possibility of a problem?

it and the board was completely nasty, oxidized, schmutzed-up. You
could see where the liquid was, probably shorted in there or
something. I'll clean it all out before reassembling. They had
replacements for $90 so ordered one, will see if that makes it go
again.
Whole teardown was like 2hr, the instructions are extremely good,
and worth paying them for the part. Lots of extremely fiddly little
bits in there, I might need to get some tiny fingers to put it back
together though. Great web site.

I fully believe as Heinlein did in that story. If you serve, you were
willing to put your life on the line, so you deserve the rights and
privileges. I think it also should entail all the socialist goodies
such as health care, pensions, education, and any other goodies to
show appreciation.

[MBZ] Ozone from small motors

2010-01-10 Thread archer
Can someone tell me if a capacitor across the leads to the brushes of a
small electric motor will reduce or eliminate ozone production by the
sparking of the brushes? Is the size of the capacitor critical?
I seem to remember that arrangement was used to prolong the life of brushes
in some electric motors years ago.
I have a big, powerful Kitchen Aid blender that started producing a lot of
ozone after being used every day for about six months. My daughter had one
that was still under warrantee like mine, but a friend of hers said it cost
her about $40 by the time she had sent it in to the company when it
developed a problem, so my daughter junked hers and got a different make.
Except for the ozone, this is a good heavy duty blender for my purposes.
The next step up would probably be a blender from a restaurant supply place
and those would probably be quite expensive.

Thanks,
Gerry Archer

Re: [MBZ] OT: Military as welfare.

2010-01-10 Thread Gary Hurst
this is exactly my point. it is not all volunteers in all branches. some
are legitimate military personnel. many are welfare collectors propping up
the war business.

you can't supply soldiers without them being their. you can't justify their
being there without wars and dangers. if we cut them loose, the world
would be a safer place.

you honestly feared being invaded and occupied by iraq? what threat did
they pose to you? if there was a legitimate threat, why were you told a
bunch of lies to justify the war rather than being told the real threat to
you and your country?

individual and collective heroism does exist, but let's not let this confuse
us as to what the massive standing army is really about.

it is about rich guys getting richer

it is about parking kids too dumb even for our colleges as we have nothing
constructive for them to do

it is about scaring the beegezuz out of anyone thinking about no longer
taking dollars for oil

the war machine does not exist to make you me or anyone else free. it does
not exist to protect anyone. it contains heroes, but is not about them.

your son may just be a hero. his commitment may save lives. i salute him.

and i suggest to you that after he has spent a year or so being a hero, you
ask him if there is not truth to what i'm saying about the war machine. he
will have seen it first hand and he will admit it to you, as has nearly
every serious soldier, sailor or marine i have ever spoken to.

my kid's shrink grew up on a marine base around wilmington, NC during the
vietnam war. he says they universally knew that the entire war and the
entire military industrial complex was a load of crap selling a bill of
goods to the incredibly stupid and naive.

like old kind solomon said, man, ain't nuthin new under the son. the only
thing the changes are the carneys and the marks
