Certainly not the fastest, but it's hard to find any tougher.
Their semi-rugged are pretty sturdy, but thefully-ruggedized are
nearly indestructible.

Try putting anything but a fully rugged laptop in a rain storm,
for half an hour, running, with the lid open.

I've purchased a couple semi-rugged ones from Bob Johnson's
Computer Stuff.

Panasonic isn't the only maker, but there seem to be more of
them so used ones are easier (and cheaper) to find.

Single fan on a 126. I changed mine in less than an hour. The fan
is held on with a spring clip that I did not remove.

It depends on which the 126 is more like. The 123 is super easy, the
201/124 is harder while still not being all that hard.

I'd guess its more like the 124/201 and there your problem is
getting the squirrel cages (there are 2) moved over. I'd also guess
that if yours isn't too badly abused it'd be easier to fix the old
one than mess with the blowers.
Somebody on here had a method for moving the blowers over but I
don't remember it.

Seems I am due for a heater blower replacement. I see there is a bare motor
available for ~$ 80 and a complete unit with fan for ~ $ 250.
Somehow I recall hearing it is difficult/tricky to transfer the fan wheel.
Anyone with experiences?

HP shows an HP ProBook 4530s Notebook PC for $539 which is listed
under "small business solutions", and 4 docking stations that range from
$85 to $137. I suppose that laptop would work with any of them.
Having an external on-off switch would be an advantage.

Gerry,
If you are looking for a desktop replacement laptop I also recommend
one of the "professional" level HP laptops. They have an available
option of docking stations that allow you to plug monitor, keyboard,
USB stuff, etc in then drop laptop directly in. Don't even need to
open, dock has power button. From laptop to desktop in less than five
seconds.

Re: [MBZ] OT Good, better, Bosch dishwashers

2011-09-01 Thread Rich Thomas
I was of two different minds on dishwashers. One mind is that you can
find really cheap ones, like floor displays or something, last year's
model, whatever, for really cheap. Then you use them, they do an OK
job, then crap out after awhile then you do the same again. I can swap
one out in an hour or so, no big deal. Or, spend a few (or a lot) more
dinero and get a good one and it lasts for quite some time. the problem
comes in spending the extra ching then the thing turns out to be not
much better than the cheap ones. Which is what I discovered when I
replaced the expensive Kitchenaid some years ago -- the ultra cheap
thing I bought had exactly the same guts as the expensive Kitchenaid --
all that differed was the KA had a fancy button panel and some extra
insulation, and maybe a steel tub vs a plastic one. But everything
mechanical was identical -- pump, timer, a coupla solenoids, etc. (there
really isn't a lot more to them than that, mechanics-wise). Turned out
it was almost cheaper to buy the cheap thing and scavenge the parts to
repair the expensive one than to go buy replacement parts, had I been so
inclined.

All that said, the Bosches seem to be a cut above from my prior
experience, but YMMV.

I can understand someone who went for a supposed quality machine like
a Miele and then finds it does not do as well as it should, having a
whine but the person who goes into the store without doing research
and buys the cheapest machine they have, should not have a right to
complain if the machine does not wash the dishes properly, is loud,
uses lots of water and electricity, breaks down and then finds that
part availability is close to zero.

Most people will take the immediate savings of a lower price vs. the

In this case many people will take the immediate reward of a low

If they seriously "un cancel" the WebOS Tablet, they are going to have to
find a way to keep it at $99. That's the only reason anyone bought one.

It depends on which the 126 is more like. The 123 is super easy, the
201/124 is harder while still not being all that hard.

I'd guess its more like the 124/201 and there your problem is getting the
squirrel cages (there are 2) moved over. I'd also guess that if yours
isn't too badly abused it'd be easier to fix the old one than mess with
the blowers.
Somebody on here had a method for moving the blowers over but I don't
remember it.

Seems I am due for a heater blower replacement. I see there is a bare
motor

available for ~$ 80 and a complete unit with fan for ~ $ 250.
Somehow I recall hearing it is difficult/tricky to transfer the fan wheel.
Anyone with experiences?

So you could resist the temptation of cheaper price?
Don't think we get Kenmore stuff up here.

We had a spike in our electricity bill in the last 1/4, which I am
contributing as being the dishwashers fault, cycle seems to take longer
than it used to.
Current quality dishwashers use less power and water than they did, some
even internally recycle water. I think it works by saving the water from
the final rinse cycle and using that in the next load.

Consumer reports says that a SS tub is a waste of money; the plastic tub
will outlast all other elements of the machine. Based on my experience, I
agree.

The Kenmore has a lot more room than our previous washer, and the racks are
well thought out and very adjustable. It even has provision for stemware!
Their instructions say not to pre-rinse (only scrape) as it is not
necessary
and a waste of water. To my surprise this is accurate! My cousin has a
commercial grade $2K machine, one of a batch he bought at auction. He is
very proud of this machine, which is nearly silent and completes its cycle
in just a few minutes. He has to pre-rinse though, and his dishes do not

I actually have seen a substantial reduction in our utility bills since
installing this item. I wonder if this can be coincidence.

I am not any sort of fan of Sears, just a very satisfied user of this

Our Whirlpoo dishwasher is making some expensive noises and I might have
to get another one, or wash the dishes by hand, which takes me half a day.
I am going to look at a S/H Bosch machine on Saturday, as it seems Bosch
are the best ones unless you want to spend a squillion.
Any experience with Bosch dishwashers? Some people say that the quality
of the Bosch washers is going downhill as they try to cut costs by
manufacturing low end machines in Turkey.
I pulled the bottom of our current dishwasher and tested the pump, all
seems to be working.

I remember the W123 motor being a lot more than $80 though, last time I

Yeah most automatic diswashing detergent has a pretty big shot of bleach
in it, I would not think that smells would be a problem if you use your
dishwasher regularly.

[MBZ] OT teasing kids with marshmallows

2011-09-01 Thread Hendrik & Fay
Further in regards to the marshmallow experiment, it would be
interesting to see if these results would be the same across different
nations and cultures.

Also if different age groups produce different results.
For example, would people in their 50's from Germany be more disciplined
than their US counterparts? Guess it would depend on the quality of the
beer on offer.

Re: [MBZ] 126 heater blower

2011-09-01 Thread Curt Raymond
It depends on which the 126 is more like. The 123 is super easy, the 201/124 is
harder while still not being all that hard.

I'd guess its more like the 124/201 and there your problem is getting the
squirrel cages (there are 2) moved over. I'd also guess that if yours isn't too
badly abused it'd be easier to fix the old one than mess with the blowers.
Somebody on here had a method for moving the blowers over but I don't remember
it.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Natural Gas generators

2011-09-01 Thread OK Don
I have a 500 gallon propane tank to run one from (also heats the house and
hot water). I'm also thinking that beside the well house is the proper place
for the generator. This property has two buildings, each on seperate
electrical meters. The well is on the little house's circuit, and I want to
power the "big house" to keep heat, blowers, etc.
I'm wondering if this would be too complicated to power with one generator
and auto cut-over switches? Perhaps two small generators would be better?

So we can say that 2/3rds of the population will buy cheap and then
whinge when it does not do the job properly.

I suppose dishwashers are a classic example of you get what you pay for.
I can understand someone who went for a supposed quality machine like a
Miele and then finds it does not do as well as it should, having a whine
but the person who goes into the store without doing research and buys
the cheapest machine they have, should not have a right to complain if
the machine does not wash the dishes properly, is loud, uses lots of
water and electricity, breaks down and then finds that part availability
is close to zero.

Yes, I believe this unit is in fact manufactured by Whirlpool. I am sure,
however that it is manufactured to Kenmore specs. It also proves that
Whirlpool is capable of producing a quality product, even though they do not
market a dishwasher of this quality under their own brand label.

We had one of those at a restaurant, they are designed to wash dishes
quickly and with the assumption that there is no dried-on material to
remove; they expect the dishes will go from the busboy's cart into the
wash before anything really gets a chance to harden or dry.

Sears does not actually make their own appliances. Kenmore has been
made by several manufactures over the years and I don't know who's

Wife bought a consumer-grade HP (Compaq Presario) a few years ago and
it's pretty low budget. That said, the only real trouble it's given us

Roger,

I can't vouch for their consumer grade machines, but the enterprise and
business grade equipment we buy from them has done quite well, in my opinion.

And this is coming from someone who was responsible for supporting it.

The education environment is a brutal one, especially at the school and
classroom level. The HP products we have had in place have held up quite well,
and have a minimal amount of downtime and warranty work.

I was responsible for about 4000 workstations and maybe 60 servers, so I think
my opinion is valid.

My peers in the district report similar experiences, as does our in-house
maintenance system.

That being said, I wouldn't touch one of their consumer grade products

We just replaced an old whirlpool a few months back. I went with a
higher-end Kenmore because it was listed as the best (of those tested) as
well as a best buy by Consumer Reports. I am actually surprised by how good
it is!

Consumer reports says that a SS tub is a waste of money; the plastic tub
will outlast all other elements of the machine. Based on my experience, I
agree.

The Kenmore has a lot more room than our previous washer, and the racks are
well thought out and very adjustable. It even has provision for stemware!
Their instructions say not to pre-rinse (only scrape) as it is not necessary
and a waste of water. To my surprise this is accurate! My cousin has a

very proud of this machine, which is nearly silent and completes its cycle

I actually have seen a substantial reduction in our utility bills since
installing this item. I wonder if this can be coincidence.

I pulled the bottom of our current dishwasher and tested the pump, all

My idea of a desktop replacement computer:

You have a rack that holds the laptop on edge behind your monitor, taking up
little desk space.

You put it in the rack and plug in a power cord, usb hub, and HDMI cable.
You turn it on by hitting a switch on the outside of the laptop, not by lifting

Re: [MBZ] OT - Natural Gas generators

2011-09-01 Thread Randy Bennell
Extending my earlier comments about a side yard mini-shed to put the
generator into, I have also wondered about putting the whole thing on
big casters and installing with a gas feed hose setup like one uses for
a BBQ and a big extension cord feed to a plug on the house.
The advantage would be primarily one of meeting zoning rules. I am in
the city with only a 5 foot sideyard and I suspect that the city would
be unhappy with any form of permanent installation.
We cannot put ac units in side yards so I sort of assume that a
generator might be a problem if my neighbor objected.

I think the whole thing is about 4 feet long, 2 feet wide and 4 feet
tall with the panel setup. It should be fairly easy to create a frame
and cover it with sheet metal. I would need some vents if it was to run
but that ought not to be too hard to come up with. Maybe even automatic
shutters so it stayed shut unless it was running.
I don't think I want to build a box like the bigger Generac units just
because of the shape of this one. The box would need to be taller than
the Generac setup. I might as well put a pitched roof on it.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Natural Gas generators

2011-09-01 Thread Randy Bennell
I am probably better off to convert to NG as I would not have to worry
about cold weather affecting the flow of propane. The generator has a
block heater so one could literally keep it ready to run even in winter
without too much trouble I suppose.

I have a couple of options for setup too. I am thinking of building a
new garden shed and intstalling it in there. The alternative would be to
make a separate smaller shed big enough only for the generator and
putting it in the side yard near the gas meter. Should make for an
easier gas hookup and the added bonus is the the main electrical panel
is over there too so it should make for a simpler wiring setup. Don't
know if I will ever do the whole automatic set up. Might be happy enough
to put the generator on its own little setup with some plugs in the
basement and just go from there with extension cords. I generally have
some electrical stuff around and in the event of a major outage lasting
days, I could always move some lines from the main panel to the
generator panel temporarily.

I know it might be better to be automatic but that requires a bit more
planning and equipment and I am getting old and slow so no guarantee I
will ever get to that.

What are you folks paying for propane?

I acquired a 10KW propane powered genset last winter but have yet to set
it up or even try to start it for that matter.

The documentation suggests it can be converted to NG but that it would
then only be 8KW.

Propane and tanks are somewhat expensive however and I have NG at the
house so my thought was to do the switch over.

I do, however, see that Propane stored separately might be better.

In Florida there is almost no natural gas available, so LP is common.

Conversion to NG from LP often requires nothing in the way of parts. In fact, a

4.11 pounds per gallon at 25C.

You can speak with your propane supplier about tank options, as there are any
number of ways to go based on what you want to have available volume-wise.
They can also set up a system that daisy chains all of the tanks together so
you don't have to mess with valves and such.

If convenience is primary, and the 8KW is adequate, convert. For
maximum independence get a big propane tank, assuming you have no zoning
or neighborhood covenant issues that would prohibit it.

Allan

The 8KW is probably sufficient for most purposes.
I also have a 7.5KW Generac that I bought earlier but have really not
used. My concern is that the fuel will be evaporated and the carb gummed
up when I need it. So, the propane powered unit seemed like a good idea.
Now let me add, that I have never really needed either one. I just think
it is a good idea to have some form of back up plan.

The propane powered unit is a Winco if I recall powered by a 2 cylinder
Wisconsin engine. I bought it used for something like $550.

I paid about $1500 for the Generac a few years back.

I believe it requires a 15/16 crow foot wrench to get the primer out and
7/8? to put the newer style in. You could bend a wrench to do the job and
if it is stubborn to get loose it helps to get the fuel lines out of the
way. Then, if you went that far it is only 3 10mm bolts to take off the
whole lift pump assy. and use a real wrench in a vise.

Dell has consistency problems, seems like a lot of component failures

for a long time, and the vast majority of our Dells are retired for

Three nuts, and one flare fitting, per accumulator.
As long as you don't strip the wrench flats off the flare fitting, there's
nothing to it. Unscrew the flare fitting first, then the mounts.
Make sure you leave the mounts as loose as possible on the new one until you get
the threads started on the flare fitting, then tighten down the mounts so it
sits solid while you torque the flare down.

Re: [MBZ] Labor estimate to replace accumulators

Run it up on some ramps and do it yourself. They are easy to get to and
your car should not have rust issues making the fasteners difficult.

I can't imagine it being much more than an hour apiece. Short of having to
deal with corroded fittings, they're not that difficult to R&R.

Thats all you need, you just unscrew the old one and screw this one on.

Ugh... $190 on Rusty's website.

Anyone got a good used one? Kaleb?

Unless I can replace just the plunger part and not the whole
assembly ... that's only about $20.

Are you talking about the primer pump? They are $190? You got to be
kidding. If I have one it would probably be the old leaky kind.

Most people will take the immediate savings of a lower price vs. the longer
term savings and greater enjoyment of buying a quality item. Related:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_marshmallow_experiment

In this case many people will take the immediate reward of a low price over the
longer term "deferred gratification" of higher reliability, better performance,
and lower total cost of ownership.
