[MBZ] Volt vs. Gas
Eric Bolling (Fox Business Channel's Follow the Money) test drove the Chevy Volt at the invitation of General Motors. For four days in a row, the fully charged battery lasted only 25 miles before the Volt switched to the reserve gasoline engine. Eric calculated the car got 30 mpg including the 25 miles it ran on the battery. So, the range including the 9 gallon gas tank and the 16 kwh battery is approximately 270 miles. It will take you 4 1/2 hours to drive 270 miles at 60 mph. Then add 10 hours to charge the battery and you have a total trip time of 14.5 hours. 270 miles in 14.5 hours would be 20 mph averge speed. According to General Motors, the Volt battery holds 16 kwh of electricity. It takes a full 10 hours to charge a drained battery. The cost for the electricity to charge the Volt is never mentioned so I looked up what I pay for electricity.I pay approximately (it varies with amount used and the seasons) $1.16 per kwh.16 kwh x $1.16 per kwh = $18.56 to charge the battery.$18.56 per charge divided by 25 miles = $0.74 per mile to operate the Volt using the battery. Compare this to a similar size car with a gasoline engine only that gets 32 mpg.$4.00 per gallon divided by 32 mpg = $0.125 per mile. Gasoline prices would have to rise to $23.68/gal to break even (assuming the cost for electricity -–to charge the Volt’s batteries –- remained unchanged). The gasoline powered car cost about $15,000 while the Volt costs $46,000. So we are encouraged to pay 3 times as much for a car that costs more that 7 times as much to run and takes 3 times as long to drive across country.REALLY? -- Hans Neureiter, Katy, TX '82 300SD '01 VW New Beetle 1.9L TDI ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Volt vs. Gas
Haters gonna hate. What you don't get is that most driving is short trips. So for a 25 mile daily round trip (or a series of trips that add up to 25 miles) you'd pay ~$2/day. A 32mpg car on $3.50 gas pays $2.73. After 42,465 trips you've paid for the car. Thats only 116 years if you drove 25 miles every day. The mileage will also depend on what kind of driving you do. These cars are intended to get decent mileage in the city where regular gas cars do poorly. Buying one for a mostly highway commute is foolish. Also the Volt is bigger than a $15,000 car and has more creature comforts. Am I saying the Volt is a great car? No but change has to start somewhere. You're a crab bucket (Google it), just want to drag everybody back down because you didn't think of it first. -Curt Date: Sat, 25 Feb 2012 05:49:54 -0600 From: Hans Neureiter diese...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List Mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] Volt vs. Gas Message-ID: caojz3l8kdquxphdda0gui1qumok40f3ywghkjexeboxlny3...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252 Who ever wrote this made a small mistake. Re: [MBZ] 1987 300 SDL clock replacement
My clock stopped on my 1987 300SDL. Every dead clock I have seen of that vintage/style has stopped because of dead electrolytic capacitors. Getting the cluster out and apart is the hardest part, we're talking about $1 of new components and a bit of soldering here. If you hammer the setting knob hard enough you can break off a plastic axle pin. I've fixed those with a tiny drill and a bit of paperclip as a new axle pin. To be clear: you don't need a different clock, just fix the one you have. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

selling [300D] to him and buying a 240D. What can I expect for fuel mileage for a 240D of the same time. You are already doing very well. The 240D would not do better unless it was a stickshift, and maybe not even then. An automatic 240D (we had one) is very un-fun in the acceleration department. The words dangerously slow tend to come to mind. One of the few cars I've ever driven that could not keep speed up some of our highway hills in this State. My 200D kicked its ass up one side of the street and down the other, performing nicely and getting substantially better mileage. Not, lately, better than you're already getting I might add. Re: [MBZ] Who wanted a 240D?
If I needed wheels, i's consider this one. especially if it had 3 pedals. Not a bad price for a car that should easily run another 100-200k miles. A 240D is great for buzzing around metro areas or commuting. They are not the best if the drive requires fast acceleration, or 80 MPH speeds. But for 0-60 driving, a 240D is great. One difference between a 240D and a 300D is that the 240D will do better mileage around town. A Diesel will inherently not lose as much MPG average in town as a gasser. Plus in place of being in a minicar death trap, you have the protection of a real MB. [MBZ] OT. turn tables ??
Hey Guys, Off topic, but I know some of you guys are into this stuff. I'm getting back into vinyl over CDs, and MP3. I miss the quality and warmth of old records. Anyway, I have an old mid 80s Sony receiver, and a Sony turn table, that is a front loader (slides out like a CD player). It's direct drive, but the bed will now not slide out. Not sure if it's just the switch (Sony switch always felt fragile to me), or something more mechanical. Anyway, I was wonder if anyone had any suggestions for a good quality used turn table? I know Macintosh make good amps, but not really in the market for an amp at the moment. Just looking for a good quality turn table, that will work with my Sony receiver. Something of good quality that was made before everything was outsourced to China and Mexico. Thanks in advance. Re: [MBZ] Volt vs. Gas
Yup. There's a lot we don't know about this new type of electric car. I wonder: what will happen to battery capacity with repeated deep discharge?, when will the battery need to be replaced (and why)?, what will replacement cost?, what happens to the old battery?, what is the life and service requirements for the electric drive train? Batteries have always been the issue. I worked n the lunar rover over 40 years ago and little has changed in that regard. Don't get me wrong. Electric cars have great promise and one day I expect that's what I (or my great grandchildren) will drive. But the Volt/Leaf came about rather suddenly so there's not much track record. And I have to wonder why GM gave up on the Volt last time 'round. Gasoline prices would have to rise to $23.68/gal to break even (assuming the cost for electricity --to charge the Volt's batteries -- remained unchanged). The gasoline powered car cost about $15,000 while the Volt costs $46,000. So we are encouraged to pay 3 times as much for a car that costs more that 7 times as much to run and takes 3 times as long to drive across country.REALLY? -- Hans Neureiter, Katy, TX '82 300SD '01 VW New Beetle 1.9L TDI __**_ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/**archive/http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/**mailman/listinfo/mercedes_**okiebenz.comhttp://m ail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com __**_ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/**archive/http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/**mailman/listinfo/mercedes_**okiebenz.comhttp://m ail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts

I am fond of Pioneer from the 70s. Maybe it is not the uber expensive stuff, but good, and not overpriced. If anyone finds a decent Pioneer 6 or 7 series receiver/amp for cheap, I would like to have another. I am talking 626 to 747 mainly, but anything that is in the format 6x6 or 7x7 is what I'd like. Anyway, I have an old mid 80s Sony receiver, and a Sony turn table, that is a front loader (slides out like a CD player). It's direct drive, but the bed will now not slide out. Not sure if it's just the switch (Sony switch always felt fragile to me), or something more mechanical. Anyway, I was wonder if anyone had any suggestions for a good quality used turn table? has anyone had experience with the USB turntables to convert vinyl to digital? None I have seen will do 78, but they should work with my LPs. seems like a simple solution My pioneer turntable won't do 78s either. I have a stack of 78s that I'd like to convert. I've dusted off theturntable, etc. since we moved recently. I also want to RIP a bunch of shelac and some vinyl. I have a Sony TA-1150 amp that I bought used in the '80s. The switched and linear pots were noisy until I moved it 50 miles in the back of the van - now it works great! The turntable is an old Dual 1209 that needs the on/off switch that activates when the arm lifts either cleaned or hot-wired. I have the 78rpm needle for it - don't remember the cartridge now, an a TC778 equalizer to feed the Sony when playing the 78s. We have around 8 shelf feet of 78s that have been in the family since the 1920s, need to get on the project someday! What can I expect for fuel mileage for a 240D of the same time. I know it will be super slow - but it would probably do well on my commute. My commute is 45 miles each way - rolling country hills with only 2 complete stops. I drive about 60 MPH. In my 300D i tend to get right at about 28 or 29 MPG. The other thing that appeals to me is the manual climate control in the 240. A W123 240 will probably not do any better. Because the turbocharger increases engine efficiency, reducing the number of cylinders and loosing the turbo will probably cancel out. In my experience, a turbo 300 in good condition can get _better_ fuel mileage than a normally-aspirated 240 - especially above 50 to 55 MPH (80-90 km/h). It takes a full 10 hours to charge a drained battery. The cost for the electricity to charge the Volt is never mentioned so I looked up what I pay for electricity.I pay approximately (it varies with amount used and the seasons) $1.16 per kwh.16

Re: [MBZ] USB turn tables
You can use Audacity to convert a 78 played at 45 -- there is a feature in there to do that. Rip it then do the conversion. I have a bunch of old 78s someone gave me, and ran a few of them through. I wouldn't bother with one of the new USB things, just run a monitor out from your receiver to your sound card in (which might be the MIC in) and do it that way. I bought an external Creative sound card box (USB) some years ago that has a bunch of inputs and outputs, it seems to work pretty well. It was like $25 at the time. On your other TT, there is a thing called a load belt that makes the tray go in/out, probably. I had a nice NEC CD player that would go through them pretty quickly. Basically a little rubber band, I bought a bunch to replace them, but alas now the CD player is ancient technology. --R On 2/25/12 7:23 PM, Dieselhead wrote: has anyone had experience with the USB turntables to convert vinyl to digital? Most sellers still want $12k for a nice one. (which might be a better deal than $5k for a shabby one) I'll take the '95 E320 we got from Don Snook for $5k rather than something that needs work and looks worse. Re: [MBZ] slooow
An automatic 240D (we had one) is very un-fun in the acceleration department. The words dangerously slow tend to come to mind. One of the few cars I've ever driven that could not keep speed up some of our highway hills in this State... And my 77hp '78 300D could not climb eastbound Snoqualmie Pass at full throttle without shifting down to 3rd which means 45mph in a 60 zone. Re: [MBZ] USB turn tables
Ok Thanks. That is what I was wondering. I thought maybe the newer stuff was as good as a 40 year old turntable. Sounds like turntable, receiver/amp, audacity is the thing. Pain in the butt to have to separate tracks and add titles and such. You would get better conversion with a better turntable, but not the same level of convenience. A good turntable cartridge is either near or more than the cost of the entire USB turntable... Gain is optimized out of the box but the big benefit is convenience. Also the software automatically splits tracks; I don't know if Audacity can do that, but I wouldn't buy an Ion for the software... It seems to me that the software and its sampling rate, compression and that sort of stuff are more of a concern than the turntable or the sound on the computer. I figured on using audacity. I was just wondering if the usb turntables were markedly better or worse than the regular turntable fed through a fair to middling receiver/amp. My turntable is 1972 vintage Pioneer PL-12D I bought an Ion for the wife a few years back and she converted a bunch of her vinyl collection. IIRC we bought some software (Spin it Again?) in preference to what Ion supplied. That worked ok The quality is ok on most of the files she got, but I'm sure one could do better with a good turntable hooked up through a decent preamp/receiver or such. I think the sound card in the 'puter is also a big factor. I bought an Audigy PCMCIA off eBay to plug into her ThinkPad for that purpose.
