Re: [MBZ] Steam cleaner

I have had great results with professional steam cleaning of the engine bay.

Both #1 boy and I paid to have our engine bays made to look almost like new.
There were no adverse effects either electronically or otherwise. The steam is
no more invasive than standard road spray, where a pressure washer would have
lots of power behind it such that it would get really deep

Re: [MBZ] Steam cleaner

Uh, maybe

I have something like this and have had mixed results depending on the
application.

It is great for interior work. Does wonders on surfaces and some detailing for
the dash. Head light and tail light action on seals and other nooks and
crannies. The heat does some good on the rubber seals at windows so that you
can get the grunge loose enough to wipe away.

IF you are thinking of under the hood, the thing is just too impotent to really
do much. A bigger pressurized steam machine will produce enough calories to
actually cut through crap enough that you could wipe the gunk off. At least
enough that an application of brake cleaner will dissolve and remove the last
bit

So you use the oxalate type stripper since you wash it off, and you use a brush
or sponge to wash off the oxalate?
On the pushbutton units in the 123 cars, you have to re-solder on the top where
the two vertical pc boards are soldered to the main board. I suppose that just
takes a bit more care in not getting the oxalate on components.

[MBZ] Where are the lights?

2017-05-13 Thread clay via Mercedes
I am having trouble getting the bulbs to behave in the cluster on Allen.

The things have never responded to the rheostat when I turned the headlights
on. The rest of the stuff is also not really making photons. The fiber optic
stuff does not seem to make light on the cluster, but the radio and ashtray
light up.

I pulled the cluster a few days ago and gave it a test. The rheostat is not
working, as the spring unrolled and did not make decent contact anyway. I used
the multimeter to chase things. Used 12v to see where electrons flowed. They
seemed to flow enough between ground and spots on the rheostat. They flow
across the ground strap on the cluster. They flow well enough to put power to
the ground and apply to the the spot on the board at the bulbs both light up.
But, I can not figure out where the electrons are falling off.

Anybody ever have this happen?

2017-05-13 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Big PITA. You need a good press and adapters to get the old bearing out and
the new one in.

Bearing failures are quite rare, and result in excessive runout and low
frequency thumping or grinding, not a whine.

Check the diff and the center bearing, both are much more likely sources,
especially if it changes with load changes. Bearings are the same all the
time, doesn't matter if you are driving or coasting.

that’s not what you do these days because steam can actually migrate into wire

The corrosion causes check engine lights and performance problems and failed

Looks pretty good, no surprises. There are two pieces of flex used to

the car to my local custom exhaust guy and just ask him if he can fix the
leak and hope he doesn’t want to get all official on me and insist that he
has to install a new catalyst. If he does I’ll just have to dig into it a
little more to get the leak sealed up.

Rubber and joints are all fairly new and in good shape. Definitely needs
new brake hoses, but that’s no surprise. Other than the missing sound
deadening panel underneath (anyone got one they want to part with?) below
 decks actually looks pretty good.

Transmission vacuum box was disconnected, as in the line looks like it
just came loose. Reconnected it and will test drive in a bit.

Was hoping to bleed brakes while I had the car in the air but I’m running
out of steam. I’m going to clean up, maybe hit the mats with some carpet
cleaner, and call it a day.

I did check the EGR and the valve flange is blocked off with a very thin metal

Re: [MBZ] Martha Report - Day 1

2017-05-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Did the final round for the day.

Cleaned front carpets and mats. They cleaned up quite well.

Got the windshield washer reservoir installed with a new grommet on the pump.
Sadly, they dumped the washer fluid heater and redirected the coolant flow, but
at least someone had the foresight to get a new cap for the reservoir rather
than keep the original which would have had the holes for the heater pipes in
it.

Had to aim a couple of the windshield washer jets. Dental picks are nice for
this, as I didn’t have one of those “T” pins that also work well for the job.

Replaced all of the fuses with copper fuses. Popped the relays in the back of
the fuse box and cleaned pins with some DeOxIt. Replaced the 30 amp fuse on
what I suspect is the auxiliary fan fuse (square, green, with a blade fuse as
part of the relay?)

Still shifts hard, but not as bad as when the vacuum line was disconnected.
I’ll need to get back under the car and check the modulator, as it is probably
leaking. It’s the original with the rubber cap, so I suspect it probably is.
Also noticed the shift linkage bushings are gone. I mean GONE. I wonder if I
should bite the bullet and buy one of the special pliers? Not looking forward
to that job, as the tunnel is really, really tight on this car.

All in all a pretty good day, despite the auxiliary fan debacle. I’m bummed
that i couldn’t resurrect them, but they were pretty much toast long before I
got to them from the looks of things. Not a lot to do tomorrow as I’m at the
point of needing parts. I’ll test the vacuum modulator on the transmission an
that will probably be the extent of the work I do. Gotta start getting the
300D prepared for delivery, as the buyer comes a week from Monday to drive it
back to Grand Rapids….

Got under the car.

Rubber and joints are all fairly new and in good shape. Definitely needs new

panel underneath (anyone got one they want to part with?) below decks actually
looks pretty good.

Transmission vacuum box was disconnected, as in the line looks like it just
came loose. Reconnected it and will test drive in a bit.

Was hoping to bleed brakes while I had the car in the air but I’m running out

and call it a day.

This is the guy, his name is Kris:

https://sites.google.com/site/mbcruisecontrolrepair/home

He’s pretty good about responding to inquiries. I sent him one of my bum
weirdo 350SDL KLIMA relays and he was able to get it limping along for a little
while The thought was to give him an example to try out and see if he could
repair them.

As I said, he did the cruise amp for my 350SDL on short notice - I had him ship
it to the seller so I could drop it in the car before I set out on the return
drive. Been working great ever since.

Re: [MBZ] W124 Rear Wheel Bearing R 91 300D 2.5T

2017-05-13 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
the rear outer axle bearing is more of a rum-room-room sound, or
whump-whump-whump like a tire with slipped belts, but more grinding than
a bad tire it is kind of a low growl. It closer to the sound of a
starter turning over the engine. If you have a whine, that is from the
pinion gear in the diff. Try putting fresh gear lube in it and drive.
I had one in a front drive car that quieted down eventually.

The axle brg. is not that hard. take off the wheel carrier, take it and
the bearing to a good alignment or general repair shop and have them
press out the old, and push in the new.

Lucky it not a wagon. Those are priced like gold.

Or do like I did and buy a used wheel carrier.

Thanks. I’ve done my share of window regulators over the years, but it’s
probably been a good 10-15 years since I’ve done one in a W124. I saw the
Dorman on Amazon. $38 or something like that.

I had a pretty good idea where the cruise amp was - I won’t bother with a
resolder until I can get a full set of new electrolytic caps for it, as they
are often part of the problem.

Fans are toast. Both have internal electrical issues, shorted windings I
suspect based on the bench tests I did on them both.

So I’ll be running aux fanless for now.

In the meantime, anyone know where the relay would be for the fans? I want to
go ahead and check the circuit out so when I get replacements I can drop them

Ramps.

Tearing down the aux fans right now. Just got them out of the car (oy!) and
letting them soak with some Kroil for a few minutes.

Both were pretty much non-functional, as they could barely be turned by hand.
I have had some success recovering these in the past, so I’m going to give it a
shot with these.

I have never seen a condenser so crudded up before in my life. There must have
been five pounds of crap, like dead bugs, leaves, etc., etc. in the thing.
There’s a pile of crap under the front of the car where stuff fell out while I
was taking things apart.

Fun. Time to see if I can recover these fans.

How tough is it to replace window regulators in these cars? The driver’s widow
is just about to wear the teeth off the segmented gear thing. When it gets to
the top of the window travel if you keep the switch down you can hear it “pop”.

Sdl cruise works and holds for a while, then will drop out. Seems like it will
work fine when you first go out like yesterday drove about 50 miles to town and
it worked fine. When we left to come back it did not. Will speed up if you push
the handle up but won't hold. Is this a symptom of the cruise amp?

2017-05-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I just try to understand the motivation. Something like the EGR gains nothing,
not to mention you’re bypassing filtered air into the engine. Just like the
lack of a cabin air filter.

Grrr.

It is a testament to these cars that they survive stuff like this.

bad thing, just something I noticed as I worked on the exterior.

Now that I have the exterior pretty much in order, I’ll move to the

the most part it’s not bad, the headliner is a little dirty, but otherwise

After the interior is done I’ll get the car in the air and do some work

I need to check the transmission vacuum modulator, as I suspect that’s
the source of the hard shift issue since all of the vacuum lines topside
look OK and to be in the proper positions.

In my down time I’ll start getting a parts list together to sort out the
breather tubing on the intake. I have GOT to sort that out, as it’s
making me crazy looking at it. Antenna doesn’t work, either, so I need to
pop the aftermarket head unit and see if it’s connected properly before I
 tear into the antenna.

Re: [MBZ] Martha Report - Day 1

2017-05-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I noticed that yesterday. However, what I can see appears to be stock and
unaltered, although as I go through the car in more detail I definitely am
finding things that would indicated someone in the past liked to second guess
the engineers and cut corners.

For instance:

Figured I would replace the cabin air filters, since this car has them - or
does it?

I pulled all of the plenum pieces out to get at the filters, and guess what?
They’re not there. As in someone removed them and never put replacements in.
Yup, a gaping hole from the plenum straight into the airbox/evaporator/heater
core. Lovely.

So with the plenum pulled apart and all of the seals removed, I vacuumed the
detritus from AZ out, mostly pine needles as one would expect and then
installed fresh cabin air filters.

While I was in the neighborhood I pulled the cover off of the monowiper and
greased everything in sight with Mobil 1 grease. That area looked pretty good.

In anticipation of future troubleshooting of the AC system, specifically the
auxiliary fans, I reconnected the disconnected wires from the high temperature
refrigerant switch on the receiver/dryer. I’ll be looking into aux fan
operation later today, I suspect.

I also noticed that the tube from the exhaust manifold going to the air intake
valve (EGR I expect) has been pinched off. That is, someone appears to have
cut the tube off just above the clamp at the manifold and then smashed the stub
of the tube flat to seal it. The connection at the intake tube appears to have
been left open to outside air. There is no cap or plug.

At this point I’m going to do some interior cleaning and get that sorted before
I get under the car and poke around.

That would make sense, since there’s no airflow to speak of through the
condenser while the car isn’t moving. I’ll check the fans and add the resistor
mod that lowers their turn on threshold as well. I’m pretty sure I have some
of the correct value in the parts box…
