Re: [MBZ] Locked Computer

2019-06-18 Thread Russ Williams via Mercedes

You won't find a Win Activation Code sticker on the bottom.
And you can't use a program to get it off the computer.
Win10 uses a digital ID that is stored on MS's servers.
Download the Win10 iso create a dvd or stick. Wipe the drive during
instillation. When asked for a product key chose I Don't Have One option.
After installing do all the updates. By this time 10 will talk to the
servers

and activate with the digital license.
You can use Ultimate CD to get the version of Win 10 that's installed.
10 will ask what version you want during the install process.
Any questions feel free to email me and I'll answer.

You can create installation media from the Microsoft website,
boot from that, and reinstall Windows. The Windows activation code
sticker on the laptop should work to activate it.

I asked for help 8 days ago about a problem which developed after I ran
Avast's boot scan, that of the desktop gadgets stopped working.

Yesterday, I noticed when I shut down the laptop there was the darkened
screen which stated Windows was waiting for programs to close. Normally
this window shows the name of the program on which it is waiting. This
time, however, that area of the window was blank.

So I clicked "force quit". I found the next time I booted the computer,
the desktop gadgets were working properly.

The next time I rebooted the computer, I did the same "force quit" thing
and upon startup, again found the desktop gadgets were working properly.

Seals at the compressor reminded me of the other sudden failure on that system
-- the high pressure side o-rings between the compressor and manifold erode in
use, and the leak is hard to find. Easy to replace, and worth a shot. Ditto
for the hose set to manifold o-rings -- I've done both several times.

That sealant will not work on a cracked evaporator -- the original had copper
tubes feeding it and an aluminum body crimped together. The differential
expansion/contraction causes the aluminum to fatigue and crack all over the
place.

I've replaced two, and need to do a third if I want to keep the "new" 300D
going (questionable at 400k miles), so I had a failure rate of three out of 5.

It's a doable job, but plan on a long weekend and lots of swearing. Be very
careful with the floor vent linkage, it's fragile and you have to fab up
something to replace it if it breaks or you have not defrost

It's brute force but you should be able to remove the old hard drive then stick
it in a docking station (connected to another computer) and pull files off the
drive. After that wipe the old drive and install a fresh OS.
Or you could boot from a bootable CD or USB and get the files that way.

OE hose sets are co$tly but a hose shop can put new hoses on your old metal
fittings for much less.
When my 82 300SD did something similar (sudden leak) the fault was one of those
rubber flex hoses at the metal fitting.
I understand the manifold that bolts to the compressor is a problem area,
especially for Diesels. There are special seals (essentially a metal washer
with rubber O-ring bonded to inside diameter) for this location but I think it
requires a certain compressor version .

Well guys, my sniffer / leak detector says the evap is leaking and there is
a very slight leak around the expansion valve.

Dan - good idea - the hoses are original as far as I know, but I'm using

larger than R-134 and don't leak out of old non-barrier hoses?

Mitch - yes on the vacuum. System was flushed out with dry C02 gas, then
vacuum applied. It very rapidly brought the vacuum down to 25 inches, and
then within another few minutes was at 29 inches. I left the vacuum pump
on it for another thirty minutes per the Cliplight instructions, and then
charged it and installed the sealer.

I had nice cold AC after one week, and then it went downhill fast. All the
work and the installation of the sealer was on Saturday 8 June, and now
just ten days later to system is so low that the compressor won't engage.

Re: [MBZ] Copart

2019-06-18 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
The situation as it was would probably have lead a person looking at it
casually to think head gasket.

It does need to be sorted out as it appears to have been sitting a while. I
know the blower motor needs to be fixed and the ac does not kick on. As far as
cap goes not sure if it’s the right one or if it’s working. It will probably
get replaced anyway

From what you are seeing, I would likely rule out head gasket also. Pretty
quick test so cheap to do.

Looks like it just needs to be sorted out a bit. Does it have the correct
pressure cap on the radiator for that vehicle? , and is the cap working
correctly.

I really do not think it has a blown head gasket.  I pulled the cap on
the expansion tank and they had it filled completely to the top, no room

The level rose that 1/2" from where it was to the very top of the

gasket.  When you rev it up, no bubbles and it does not blow coolant
out.  When you let off the pedal and it returns to idle, the level of
coolant would surge up slightly with some flowing out the opening
because it is overfull.  This seems normal to me as the flow of coolant
slows down and surges up for a second.  With the cap off the hose never

I strapped it down I thought I would see if it would start. I turned the

up. I can’t believe they did not list it as running. As it sits it’s at
least a $4k truck. With a Maaco paint job on it it’s probably a $6-7k

Re: [MBZ] Copart

2019-06-18 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Simple check for head gasket leak.
Remove radiator cap, start engine, run it at fast idle till it warms up, if
it takes that long.
If you have a head gasket leak, you will get bubbles and surging of coolant
out of the fill neck as you advance throttle, the surges of coolant
will increase in volume.
At low idle, coolant will bubble and gurgle over the fill neck... If it
doesn't, likely head gaskets are good.. maybe.

What happened with engine temps when you drove it? Typically, combustion
gas in coolant will cause high engine coolant temp also.. another indicator.

Re: [MBZ] Copart

2019-06-18 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I might have found reason the truck was at copart. It was donated but listed as
mechanical. I pulled it off the trailer and drove it a couple of miles up and
down the road. It runs great and drives very smooth with no rattles like my
other suburban has. Feels about as close to a new truck as you can get. Got
back home and I noticed the upper radiator hose is pretty much rock hard. My
other suburban you can squeeze the hose in half. It could potentially have a
leaking head gasket or head issue. For the 6.5 new heads are fairly cheap.

Also, this one is a bit of a mystery. Truck has a CA title and carfax shows 2
owners always in CA. Last carfax entry was from 03, nothing since then. Tires
on it look brand new but have 07 date. I see an old mouse nest under the hood
but no damage to anything.

The Ultimate Boot CD's web page is at

https://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Its download page, https://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html, also has
helpful information and checksums to check whether you have a good
download or not:

-
Please note that UBCD currently does not support UEFI Boot. If you have
a UEFI machine, please remember to turn on CSM Boot in your BIOS.

Current release: V5.3.8

Download format: ISO image
   Size: 695MB
  Checksums:
[MD5] bede539499ee6fe9cfbb5e2a7ccf370e
[SHA1 ] cb2156f279fb5631d012ba0e9b1c1843af3004d6

-

BTW, I did a checksum on the ISO image I downloaded from majorgeeks.com
and it is good, which means using majorgeeks.com for that is OK.

Major Geeks has a lot of stuff besides UBCD, particularly for "fixing"
Windows.

Is that stuff any good?

Re: [MBZ] Locked Computer

2019-06-18 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
If you don't want to preserve anything on the machine, just
reinstall. That's probably best anyway if you don't know the history of
the machine.

You can create installation media from the Microsoft website,
boot from that, and reinstall Windows. The Windows activation code
sticker on the laptop should work to activate it.

Re: [MBZ] I guess I was ignorant at some point too

2019-06-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The “kit” Uncle Kent is selling is just a bunch of O rings for the leveling
valve. As usual, he’s screwing people blind (in my opinion) because they’ll let
him. The only thing you can do with his kit is open up the valve and reseal it.
There’s nothing shown for the wear parts. but hey! You get a “free” video!

The Mercedes kit includes O rings, a couple of check balls, a spring and new
plungers/pistons. You can see what parts are included in the PelicanPart
listing here:

Re: [MBZ] I guess I was ignorant at some point too

2019-06-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That’s the correct number and description. Nomenclature sometimes leaves
something to be desired with Mercedes, as some things don’t translate well.

A good way to validate something like this is to take the part number with no
spaces and google it along with the word “Mercedes”. You’ll see links that
identify it properly or you can go to “images” in the search page and see
pictures of what it is. I did this and there are all sorts of descriptions
“leveling valve seal kit”.

Just as an aside, the Classic Center parts search properly identifies this as a
“repair kit”.

The dealer found that number but calls it a 'Washer

where the hard lines connect to the body of the
controller. I don't want to order one of those for $60

The blue flag was more prominent, at least until near the end.   Itsall
a buncha BS.   Look up Derek Warfield, "the Bonnie Blue Flag"

First time I was in the statehouse, (6th grade)  I looked at all the
captured civil war battle flags and was very disappointed that the vast
majority were not the stars and bars we had been told was THE flag.
According to the former rag of record, there were 34 captured civil war
flags.  If memory serves, only one was stars and bars, but a couple
others had that as the field.   Same rag sez the state has 212 captured
battle flags.  However
https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/publications/IR/16891.pdf sez there are
over 200 captured civil wah flags, and the legislature spent almost 2
million to stabilize and restore em at time of publication.

It is as simple as dirt. The rebuild kit for the valve costs about $30. It
includes all new orings, a new spring or two, and a new metal plunger. The
old plungers start to stick in the aluminum housing after the orings begin
to fail. So it all needs to go and new parts go in. All you need is a clean
table and a couple of wrenches. And a jack and a flashlight. Brain
optional, but probably helpful.

I ultrasound cleaned the old housing. The steel line fittings cause
galvanic corrosion of the housing, so some barium or other stuff is
probably a good idea on the threads.

There is a pressure relief screw on the housing also. For when you first
open it up. But not really needed.

No more saggy rear. Probably a good time to replace the struts also, but
not required. Change the fluid out too.

I dont know why people put those spring chocks in at all. So silly when you
have this nice system in place.

I think the pump has a rebuild kit also, but when I had the head off I just
put the old parts back into the pump. Still works fine.

Re: [MBZ] Locked Computer

There’s a little bootable Linux (or something) file that will find the Windows
password and wipe it or reset it it. I vaguely recall using one once, maybe
booting off a CD or USB stick. You have to intercept the boot and go into BIOS
and tell it to boot off wherever the file is.
