Re: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** Re: ***SPAM*** Re: Got my buck for the season
Reminds me of a Pat McManus (outdoor sports humorist) story about hunting with his cousin Buck because Buck, though an idiot, was old enough to drive and Pat wasn't. Buck would see a 3 week old hoofprint and say 'look Pat, deer sign'. Pat would spot a steaming pile of poo and Buck would derisively say 'you can't eat sign'. So one day, Pat dumps a box of milk duds on the ground. "hey Buck, deer sign". Buck gives his customary dismissal, so Pat picks a couple nuggets off the ground, tosses them up, and catches them in his mouth. And of course when Buck figured out what Pat did, he gave him a good thumping on the head for it. 10,000 plus for a box of useful parts "maybe" does not a bargain make. In fact, if you factor in transport, sales fees [if any]. storage while you "find a use for the parts not damaged"... it becomes a damn expensive car, which will always be followed by a salvage title and a wreck report that says "totaled", if you choose to rebuild it. Replacement parts, repaint, etc etc... another $20 grand easy enough Uni-body, so major frame machine time to un-kink... No thank you. Am I missing something? Why do you folks find this odd or unreasonable? That was an expensive car and is only a year or so old. What's dumber than a California legislator? A California voter. But I'm pretty sure lead bullets don't have to ship as hazmat, as long as any that pass through CA have the Prop 65 warning on them. Completed cartridges have long been ORM-D materials, and gunpowder and primers have long been hazmat. IIRC, UPS demands you ship hazmat primers and hazmat powder separately so they can charge you two $25 hazmat fees. A couple weeks ago, Brownell's had a one day special, free shipping and free hazmat on $150 orders. I found out about it as I was getting ready to go to bed and was NOT prepared to order a bunch of powder and primers. Hi Max, I hope your wife and daughter can forget this assault and move on. It's doubtful the police will do anything. IMO it's a sign of neighbors starting to go downhill. Like the "broken window" syndrome which says a small problem leads to larger problems and pretty soon you have a slum. I know most of the rank and file police officers sincerely want to help people, but they must know the political types they work for are spoiling their good work ethic. Also, since the organizer is a Big D, they likely have sympathies on the side of the criminals (for some unknown reason) that will make prosecution that much more unlikely. Yep, and I hear that the organizer of Second Sunday on King is a big D. I should pass through channels to her some of the details I shared here, let her know how she could improve that event and encourage more family participation. I'll probably get labeled as an uncaring insensitive jerk because I try to shield my family from that criminal behavior. - Max Charleston SC On Mon, Oct 1, 2018 at 8:25 AM Floyd Thursby via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Sounds about right. Sounds about right. King street has become a haven for the bums when the panhandling ordinance was struck down ("free speech"). Most of them appear to be psychotic or illegal drug users or both. --R On 10/1/18 7:21 AM, Meade Dillon via Mercedes wrote: Clay, Sounds like well past this point, but agitating for change (start going to city council meetings) might be lots of fun. Downtown Chucktown one Sunday afternoon, SWMBO, SWMBette and I stopped for a bite on King street. Shortly after we ordered the food, my wife stepped outside to get some air. Our table was about three steps from the front door, the restaurant front was all glass so she was completely visible to myself and our daughter. Two men approached her and started trying to talk to her, I started moving outside but before I got there one grabbed her and hugged her. She pushed him away, I stepped in between and commenced to get in his face but not get physical, she called 911 on her cell while I was seeing this miscreant (drunk) and his companion (also drunk) off. An officer arrived minutes later, immediately passed the description of the perps on his radio, and then took our statements. Once we'd done that I asked for the case number and made clear that we'd be very happy to appear in court as witnesses to this criminal behavior. The cop apologized and basically said don't hold your breath, the local prosecutor wouldn't bring charges because the local judge would dismiss them in a case like this. There would be a report but nothing beyond that. No name for the criminal, so no way to attach to his record. We were pretty incredulous. I told the restaurant owner that we'd take our business elsewhere, like to another town that enforced the law, and enjoy the remains of our Sunday in peace. From that moment on, I avoid spending money at any establishment downtown if I can help it. - Max Charleston SC On Mon, Oct 1, 2018 at 6:53 AM Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: M Bodyguard (.380 ACP) or Ruger LC9S or both, depending... Using a metal pipe where a fuse belongs is a bad idea, so I choose to complain about the use of (relatively) poor conductive iron rather than good conducting copper. In a application like that, either one is going to allow the wires after it to get hot enough to burn the building down. So my tirade against not using copper was intended to be an extension of your joke. Again, maybe to subtle. Or my delivery was too dry. *smiles* ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

But there are circuits that won't work "normal" with the lamp in series, and situation that the lamp will light when it's not shorted. For example, brakes light circuit. With a lamp in series with the two brake lights the current control lamp will glow - and the brake lights will be dim. But it's still useful, because if it was shorted the brake lights won't work at all - or be super dim. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Last dead short we had in a Benz was a grounded wire for the trunk light on the 300SDL. It was a pain to fix, but not hard, as the back seat upper rest had to come out to get the wiring harness split up to where the wires weren't melted. Had to splice in a bunch of wire for taillights, new wire for trunk light, etc as the short had melted and fused some stuff in the wire bundle, but it was a very straightforward fix. Easy to troubleshoot too if you have a VOM. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** Dead short
I learned a cool trick as a bench tech working on variable speed DC motor controls many, many years ago. One of the most common failures we would see on units coming in for repairs were shorted triacs in the output stage of the drive. Of course these would immediately blow a fuse or trip a breaker when the controller was powered up and activated. Our design guy, a real savant but total nut job, set up a power cord at each bench with a mogul base light bulb in series whose amperage draw was less than the controller under load. If the controller was good, it would run just fine and the bulb would never light. But - if the controller was bad, in that the output triacs were shorted, as soon as you plugged it in the bulb would light. Simple, yet effective. No blown fuses or tripped breakers. I’ve used the same approach with troubleshooting DC circuits in cars for years using a brake light bulb in place of the fuse for the affected circuit. If there’s a short, the bulb will light. If not, it will pass enough current for the circuit to operate normally. -D > On Sep 28, 2018, at 7:19 AM, Meade Dillon via Mercedes > wrote: > > Last weekend I had a dead short that blew #5 fuse in The White Whale. Last weekend I had a dead short that blew #5 fuse in The White Whale. Took me about five minutes to diagnose and fix. No white coat or blue gloves needed. The story: rented a u-haul trailer, when I hooked up my trailer wiring I managed to get the euro socket inserted 180 degrees off, and the fuse blew. Tried a new fuse, it blew as well. Double-checked the last thing that changed (the trailer electrical connector) and found and fixed the problem. I also have an intermittent problem with the HVAC blower motor in my 124.131 ('95 E300 Diesel). That took me a couple of hours to diagnose completely (because I had to take off all the cowling rubber and plastic to get down to the blower motor), but I was able to narrow the problem down to either the blower motor or the controller for the blower motor in about 20 minutes using divide and conquer. I'm really thinking about putting new brushes in that motor instead of replacing it. Kent's stuff: I did buy his guide and special tool for R the squirrel cage fan blades on a 124 blower motor, and did that job about 12 years ago on The White Whale, that Bosh motor is still going strong. I think it was a good value, IIRC it was around $25 for the tool and guide. - Max Charleston SC On Fri, Sep 28, 2018 at 12:41 AM fmiser via Mercedes wrote: > I > guess mostly I'm trying to get a glimpse of "normal" from wherever > it is that I am. > > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** Dead short
Intermittent electrical problems are the toughest to solve, because they are intermittent (bad grounds, loose wires, cracked connectors (visibly okay, electrically not so much), failing relays, etc.). Dead short, not too bad, but can be time consuming. The hardest part in diagnosis sometimes, is locating an accurate electrical diagram. Pretty damn hard to get from here to there without a roadmap. Likely just radar. Military has some pretty high output radar in early warning systems and missile defense systems of about that era. Most likely, the magic ignition box was not shielded in any way from the microwave output of said radar... since it was a repeat event, and duration was short, about the sweep time of a large array radar antenna... I was travelling on an insterstate to a major city. About a hundred miles from there I was driving through the area of a medium sized town. Probably 20 or 30 miles away on the other side of the town was a fairly large Air Force Base. Just before entering the most populated part of the town my engine quit. After probably 3 or 4 seconds it started again. This was during the late 1980s and I was driving a '73 Chrysler Volare. I didn't think much about it since the Volare was about 15 years old, and the small metal encased solid state switching unit that energized the coil which fired the plugs would go bad periodically after acting funky for a while. I always carried a spare and it was easy to change, Before the next trip to the big city I put in a new switching unit from the dealer and expected no more trouble for a while, but the same thing happended at the same place with the engine again dying for 3 or 4 seconds. Having read or heard something about experiments with "death rays" and such, I began to suspect that the air force base was beaming some sort of electromagnetic energy strong enough to freeze a solid state circuit encased in steel. The next trip to the big city I cut over behind the AFB to see if such a "beam" might be detected there; assuming that some sort of high powered asircraft landing system might be the cause. Sure enough, the same thing happened. Was it a landing system or was it experiments with "death rays"? I never figured it out. As I understand, EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) is the result of a high-altitude "dirty" explosion that releases lots of gamma rays. Those rays, as they "cut" the earth's magnetic field, generate an EMP. Most of the energy in an EMP is likely very similar to lightning. Yes, the USA has a lot of electronics. And an EMP could really cause a mess. My (limited) analysis is that a major solar storm is a greater risk than an EMP - but it typically much lower frequency so will effect power distribution system but not have much effect on our cars. > My questions are: > > Would my '97 Powerstroke 7.3 be functional after such an attack? The engine control computer has to have a fair amount of filtering on the inputs to keep the automotive EM junk out. > If not, are there components I could keep on hand in a Faraday > Cage to get it back in service? The engine control computer is what I would expect to be the most vulnerable. The injectors are pretty tough and rather buried. The alternator is pretty tough due to the current it has to handle. I guess I would probably put an engine control computer, one each of the sensors, and the alternator's electronic voltage regulator. If you care about the body computer, I guess one of those too. And a cage may not be needed. No wires connected could be enough to keep out the gremlins. However, if that's why I was keeping a spare, I would sure keep it in an aluminum pouch, inside a static-dissipating bag. But really it is _ALL_ speculation. The last actual EMP from a weapon was a test done in USSR in 1962 or so and there was not much but power to disrupt. It did do that. Re: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** Slightly OT: EMP Preparedness
If your truck is 1992 and up, speedo signal is taken from a magnetic sensor that is mounted on the top of the diff, it counts teeth on the ring gear to give speed signal, so, likely will lose speedo input... If you have a manual trans, non issue... if you have the C6 auto, or the E4OD auto, both take that speed signal to make computer shifts... and it will be fried by EMP so, again, vulnerable points. Post EMP, [a big event] a trip to FLAPS for parts would be useless, their computers will be down for life... My personal assessment would be, truck is killed, if it's post 1994 version. It may be severely wounded if it's pre 1994, as far as starter, alternator, and depending on the intensity of EMP, perhaps wiring bundles... But could quickly be made to run, especially if it's manual trans. How much of the truck is non-electronic? In general, I worry about the alternator and starter (no fuses in those circuits) on my diesels. I'm pretty sure the battery would handle a short but big pulse of energy just fine. Radio and instrument panel will be mostly dead (speedometer is mechanical so that will be fine). - Max Charleston SC On Wed, Sep 26, 2018 at 1:39 PM Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Recent information has been coming out about the vulnerability of the US > to an EMP attack. Re: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** Slightly OT: EMP Preparedness
I'm a diesel Ford truck guy, presently own 5. So, I may have some qualifications to answer your question. Prior to 1994, the International engines Ford used were Indirect Injection, with Mechanical injection pumps. The only electrical device which is EMP sensitive is the fuel solenoid, mounted on top front of the mechanical IP.. It requires 12V to turn on fuel flow to the IP With that solenoid energized, you can roll the truck down a hill, or pull it with a mule [put it in second gear, get it rolling with clutch in.. pop clutch to rotate engine and it will start.] Post 1994, injection became "direct injection" with a computer controlling injectors to open and close fuel flow to each cylinder. That computer takes an electronic signal off another electrical device called "Cam Position Sensor" which tells the computer the cylinder position for fuel injection and timing... There are a number of other electric systems and sensors that "run the engine".. such as throttle position sensor... you foot runs an electronic sensor to select desired engine speed... not a throttle cable like pre 94 mechanical injection. So, if you have a post 94 Ford Diesel Power Stroke truck... and an EMP event, carry a good set of walking shoes or a bicycle... cause you won't be driving it home... and you'll need a bunch of electronic test equipment to determine what is fried...[which also got fried, most likely] On Wed, Sep 26, 2018 at 10:38 AM, Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Recent information has been coming out about the vulnerability of the US > to an EMP attack. [MBZ] ***SPAM*** Slightly OT: EMP Preparedness
Recent information has been coming out about the vulnerability of the US to an EMP attack. I recall the press touting the "failure" of a NORK hydrogen bomb test because it had a low yield. I knew at the time that the test was no failure, but was about a very lightweight weapon that could be carried by the barely adequate missile technology they had so that it could be used as an EMP. My questions are: Would my '97 Powerstroke 7.3 be functional after such an attack? If not, are there components I could keep on hand in a Faraday Cage to get it back in service?
