Re: [MBZ] 1983 Glow Relay (no glow) update

2011-10-17 Thread Michael Canfield
Argh! All this and now mine is acting up. Light is intermittent, relay
is clicking, all glow plugs feel warm to the touch after cycling. Was very
hard to start this morning.
Guess I will test the glow plugs and go from there. Due for fuel filters
and a valve adjusment as well.

No relay for sale here, but I posted a solution back on 11/2/10

working fine on my 83 300 SD.

Thanks for the suggestion - but since this is my first diesel - and many
others but me drive it - (I own a limo and bus company and frequently send a
driver down the road in it to get 10 hours of rest before I show up and let
them relieve me and I drive back) I better not do anything too quirky or
someone is going to be somewhere south of the middle of nowhere and kill the
battery cranking without the benefit of glow. I have everyone trained to
turn the ignition to the on position and then buckle there seatbelt adjust
the seat and then crank. Seems to work.

At least know one has killed the battery yet.

The light is hooked to a temperature-sensitive timer.
Caps in the timer can age and fail, as could, I suppose,

do component tests to diagnose it at that level.

BTW, SWMBO and I have been driving MB Diesels for 32 years; several months
ago, we had just gotten into one of the cars, and as I was starting it, I
said something about the glow light - either it was a bit short or a bit
long - 'don't remember. SWMBO asked, What glow light? I replied, That
little yellow light right there at the far, lower right corner of the
instrument cluster - the one you were supposed to have been using for the
last 32 years. She replied, Oh, I just wait for the buzzer to quit.
'Must've been talking about the belt buzzer. I replied, Well, I guess
that's been working pretty good for it, too. 'Just so you don't start
grinding on the starter immediately as you insert the key. She doesn't.

[MBZ] 1983 Glow Relay (no glow)

Hello

1983 300D. Glow Plug light was going off very quickly after ignition was
turned on and hard starting on cool mornings - pulled glow plugs found
2 dead - replaced all 5. After replacement the light will not light at all
and it is not glowing (which happened rarely before replacement). There is
power to the glow plug distribution box fuse on the front drivers side wheel
well, but no power going out to the glow plugs. Is this an issue with the
Glow Plug pre glow relay? Where is it on this car? Thanks in advance

Re: [MBZ] 1983 Glow Relay (no glow)

2011-09-28 Thread Rich Thomas
Yeah, the big strip thing, I think it is 50A? If you have to go to the
stealer it will be like $3, I think Rusty sells them for a dollar or
so. That is the first thing to just change out when the glow system
starts acting funky. Make sure all the wires are OK too, and the screws
are clean. If they get goobered up or burned or corroded they will have
a high resistance.

What Rich said, but the correct size is 80 amps, located in the box you call a
distribution point for the glow plugs. Remove it (two phillips screws) and
gently flex it a little; they can crystallize and crack with age. Look fine,
pass a little voltage but not enough amps.

Pre-glow Relay.

The relay has some self diagnostic circuitry; light failing to light or
lighting at the wrong time or flashing all indicate a problem that requires
service. When the fuse gets flaky, some times the diagnostic circuitry will
discern a problem, sometimes it won't.

Re: [MBZ] 1983 Glow Relay (no glow)

2011-09-28 Thread Fmiser
 Peter Hertzing wrote:

There is power to the glow plug distribution box fuse on the
front drivers side wheel well, but no power going out to the
glow plugs. Is this an issue with the Glow Plug pre glow
relay? Where is it on this car?

You already found it. *smiles*

The relay, the controller, the fuse, and the distribution is
all in the one box.

At the aft end of the box (up-hill side) is a pair of largish
phillips screws. Between these screws is a flat piece of
metal that is the 80A glow fuse. Often it can look okay, but
be in poor shape. I carry at least one spare in each of the
cares 'cause they are small and rather cheap.

With a test light or meter, you can test for power on both
sides of the fuse. It is always hot. But to be sure, test it
while the plugs are glowing.

Since you just put in new plugs, I'll presume those are good
and the connections at the plugs are clean and dependable.
But for reference, right at the relay is a great place for
testing glow plugs. The technique uses an older
automotive-type ammeter that has a +-30 or more range.
Unplug the connector with all the wires leading to the glow
plugs. Connect one lead of the ammeter to the big fuse, the
other to each of the contacts in the connector. There is one
contact for each glowplug. Watching the ammeter you can even
see the current flow change as it heats up. This tests the
wire, the connector, and the plug.

If each of these sub-systems test as okay, then consider
condemning the relay itself.

When I got home from work today - I checked again and still no glow light
and no power to the glow plugs. I hooked up a charger to the battery
although it seemed fine I have been messing around with it for a couple days
so I figured it can't hurt. Then I played with the fuse and tapped the relay
and such - and now the light comes on for about 2 seconds but It seems to be
glowing normally.
So
Any reason the light only comes on for a few seconds?
Otherwise starts nice and smooth.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help

The short light cycle is supposed to tell you that the current drain to the
plugs is not balanced. If all the plugs are new, then either one is defective,
or you have a loose connection somewhere between the relay and one of the plugs,
or the relay isn't quite right anymore.

I discovered another reason for the short light on my W116:
When I replaced an old mini dual terminal battery that seemed to be starting the
car OK with a new group 49 full size battery, the glow indicator lamp resumed
its proper function.

OKay - I'm sure two of the ones I removed were shot cause with a quick test
they didn't glow at all. I hope none of the new ones are bad - but this is
close to what it was doing before - so I have to lean towards relay. I'll
check with an ampmeter tommorow.

Re: [MBZ] 1983 Glow Relay (no glow) update

OKay - I'm sure two of the ones I removed were shot cause with a quick test
they didn't glow at all. I hope none of the new ones are bad - but this is
close to what it was doing before - so I have to lean towards relay. I'll
check with an ampmeter tommorow.

Oh, I forgot. It might just be that the new ones draw more or less current than
the old ones, that would make the current comparison circuit decide you had a
bad plug. If you do the ammeter trick with the glow plug harness at the relay
end you can see if they all draw the same.

If it is the relay, I'd only replace a relay for poor light function if I had
another spare relay laying around. (assuming it still powers the plugs for about
30 seconds, and assuming that everybody who drives the car can count to 20 or 30)

Re: [MBZ] 1983 Glow Relay (no glow) update

2011-09-28 Thread Jim Cathey

Any reason the light only comes on for a few seconds?

The light is hooked to a temperature-sensitive timer.
Caps in the timer can age and fail, as could, I suppose,
the thermistor. You'd be diving into the GP relay to
do component tests to diagnose it at that level.
