Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the washing machine

2020-10-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Oh hey, I forgot to tell the other big camp story from last week. We got a
refrigerator!
Onna these in white:
https://uniqueappliances.com/product/8-cu-ft-propane-fridge/?c=72e1ba2726d6
8 cu ft is pretty small but at $1500 delivered propane fridges are pretty
spendy. Ours weighs as much as the much larger unit we have at home. The tubing
on the back is pretty serious.
As usual there was nearly a whole day farting around getting it hooked up
including 2 trips to the hardware store for more fittings. Neither of us wanted
to buy another 50' of 3/8" copper pipe (at probably $1.50 a foot) for the 15
foot run so we ended up putting a couple pieces we already had together. Also
as usual it took me about 5 bad flares to get the hang of the flare tool
again. One trick we used on the flares was to anneal the pipe before making a
flare. Copper work hardens and last time I made flares I was having trouble
with it cracking and leaking, softening it before working with it worked way
better.

The new opener in GWN has that option. I could not make my phone work with it.
The rest of the household figured it out. I do not see a need to use my phone
to have some hacker track me. The former keypad opener was not compatible with
the new machine. A replacement arrived today that wants coding and pairing to
the wifi network.

Last washer I bought was from Lowes. They didn't have the model I wanted
in stock, but had it on their website, so I ordered it online and had it
delivered to the local Lowes store, where I picked it up. Took a few
extra days but worked out fine.

All our local appliance stores but one are gone, and they only carry
Miele. Lowes, Menards, and Best Buy killed the others off.

I had a similar issue with a replacement tail light lens for Angie's car. It
was really poorly packed in just a light cardboard box. Think cereal box and
you wouldn't be far off.

They got me a good one on the second try and compared to all the other places
the price was very good but it was kind of frustrating.

the washer

RepairClinic.com will probably cost a little more but I've never

My brother-in-law is building a new place. They went to Lowes or Home Depot, I
forget which, for appliances and were told some sob story, can't get appliances
until January. They'd like to move in by November...
Then they tried a local appliance place, they had everything in stock,
delivered 2 days later, saved something like $2500 over the big box store price.

$3k off the price. The builder said they can’t get stuff fast enough and they
were having to credit people back at closings because they couldn’t get the
appliances for the homes fast enough.

I was at Lowe’s the other day and it was pretty slow, so I walked through the
appliance department and spoke to one of the sales people.

Long story short, they can get appliances. It’s hit or miss, and if there’s a
particular model you want and they don’t have it, it’s a roll of the dice when
or if it will ever show up. They had a pretty decent selection of stuff across
all price ranges and said that if they’ve got it in the store or warehouse you
can have it in a day or two.

So I guess as long as you’re not stuck on a particular model and can be
flexible, there are appliances to be had. I specifically asked about Bosch
dishwashers, and she said they had plenty of them but not all models.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the washing machine

2020-10-19 Thread dan--- via Mercedes
PO of my house put one of those in on the main garage door, so I got it by
default when I bought the house.

The notifications are a little annoying, but the ability to open and close with
the app can be convenient when I’m in a car that doesn’t have a remote.

Mine is a belt drive, and the quietest garage door and opener I’ve ever had.

It's hard to draw broad conclusions from anecdotes. My LG front-loader
lasted 13 years with one minor failure (drain pump, which was easy to
replace thanks to good design) prior to its final fatal failure. It was
serving a family of 5 so it got a lot of use during that time.

Samsung and LG are both Korean, so I would expect they have similar
approaches to design and quality control.

ALL modern appliances have gone overboard in terms of adding gizmos,
touch screens, WiFi, remote control from your phone, etc. I actively
avoid models with those features, just adds cost and is one more thing
that can break.

Well the new LG washer ate its drain pump. Lasted a couple years max. Of
course it probably did 5 million loads of Laundry during that time. I
wonder if it has a load counter on it.

LG has only one warehouse and its in AL. So we are without a washer until
next week. Kind of unbelievable given they sell the machines at Home Depot.
I should have just bought a pump on amazon prime.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the washing machine

2020-10-17 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Last time I needed a drain pump for an LG I ordered it on Amazon to save
a few bucks. It arrived broken. They did exchange it, but that's
annoying and left me without a washer for longer than necessary. The
eventual replacement did work and lasted until the pot-metal drum
support broke (see the start of this thread). At that point I replaced
the washer

RepairClinic.com will probably cost a little more but I've never
received a bad part from them.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the washing machine

2020-10-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
For what it’s worth, I was wondering about the chatter about new appliances
being unobtanium due to everyone staying home with the pandemic. Our new house
had no appliances even though they were on the description, so we negotiated

I've got an old coffee can, pot, jug, whatever you call a plastic thing that
once held a couple pounds of coffee. In that I separated the acid into plastic
sandwich bags so that if the humidity got to one it would only ruin that bag.
The whole thing is in the basement which is the worst humidity room in the
house ;)
Frankly I expected it to, as you say, fuse into a solid block but after 7 or 8
years (closer to 8 I think) its still fine.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the washing machine

2020-05-26 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
We leave ours open. Of course those doing laundry around here have a bad habit
of doing a load, then forgetting about it and coming back the next day to dry
it and by that time the cloths have to be washed again because they stink.

Leave the door ajar, and wipe out the little puddle on the seal.

I also use a half scoop of plain unscented OxyClean per load unless I'm using
bleach. No mildew, clean clothes.

Any issues with mildew in your Maytag? That was mentioned many times in

Someone (off-list) said I should look at Staber. They use industry

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the washing machine

2020-05-25 Thread Mitchell Haley EA via Mercedes

I used to want an on-premises commercial Speed Queen. (laundromat quality
but no coin box)
Back in 2002 a front loader was about $1400.

I ended up getting Mom a high efficiency Fisher and Paykel top loader
instead. Spiritual ancestor to the Whirlpool Calypso.
No belts or gearbox. Just a high efficiency motor, pump and a bunch of
valves. Only real problem is when the pump motor dies it pulls too much
current and fries the circuit board. Solution to that was an inline fuse
on the pump motor. Parts were cheap, repairs were easy.
But now the parts are expensive. A $35 pump is now $140.

So eventually I'll have to find a new favorite washer. What'll be hard to
replace are the top loading dryers that came with them. Nothing is as fast
or easy as pulling wet stuff out of the top of the washer and dumping it
in the top of the dryer.

Friend of mine runs distilled water in the coffee maker.
Keurig doesn't get crudded up.

Also, distilled water apparently has less dissolved air in it, makes clear
ice cubes.

We struggled with this on a GE front loader bought in the early 2000s.
Unfortunately, it was not one of the front loaders covered under the massive
recall campaign that seemed to affect nearly every one that was built. I used

AK house got a new LG washer just before WRD hit. Front load, top of the score
from Consumer Rip-off. The instruction manual is in four languages. Mostly
pictures. And all it covers is how to turn the thing on to do “normal” load.
There are a bunch more options, but to use them you need to QR code in for
that information. It will pair with your phone so you can operate it
remotely. Call it from work to do …. something. Because it can, and you are
too lazy to wait until you get home? You actually trust the kids to load it and
put detergent, but fear they will burn the house down if they touch buttons?

It does a much better job than the turd HE top load, but still not as good as
the front loader Frigidaire in SEA that is a decade old. Whites are dusky
instead of BRIGHT white

Kenmore is actually a label not a brand. I think most Kenmore stuff is
made by Whirlpool, though that has varied over the years and it's not

I renovated the kitchen in SEA in ’96 with KitchenAid DW and fridge. Amana
downdraft gas range is the only thing to have failure, as the early electronic
control boards cook/desolder with prolonged high oven temps. Was expensive,
but better than purchasing new to have a fresh board installed a decade ago.
The board is now NLA and operated intermittently. Only issue with the fridge
was the copper line to the ice maker (plumbing, not internal) broke when the
cleaning lady moved the fridge one time too many.

The washer drier set that came with the house was kenmore from the late ‘60s.
The washer failed, but the dryer kept on blazing the moisture out of cloth
until 2008. It was replaced by the orphaned stacked unit dryer from the
upstair remodel when the washer there (Amana?) had a bearing failure.
Overloading condition. The guys who hauled both the kenmore dryer and the dead
washer took them to a refurbisher who makes them good again and sells them
cheap to worthy users.

It's frustrating that this part is not a forged piece of stainless

Honestly I'd probably give it a try if I were living on my own, but in a

I can. For starters, trees are wet 100% of the time while living. But the
main factor is that I'm talking about basically rolling the wood in epoxy,
completely coating it, pouring a little epoxy in the trough, then pushing
the coated wood down into the trough. Then pour more on and trowel
it down so that it's completely filling the gaps across the break. No wood
will be exposed to water. The wood is there to give the area some flexible
strength, like the back of a sword (which ideally is not as hard as the
cutting edge), but mostly to fill the gap so you don't need stupid amounts
of the epoxy. Glue works very well if you can get enough surface area
involved. Hence filling the trough, etc.

For more strength, epoxying thin strips of steel over the back side of
the breaks would not be a bad idea, if they can fit without interference.
As with the wood, coat the steel so that no rust would ever start. The
steel is for strength, the surface area is for the glue. Maybe inch-long
strips, inch and a half. Something like that. The metal must all be CLEAN,
and rough.

This kind of repair, done well, would outlast the rest of the machine.

The only problem with pot metal like this is that they never make it thick
enough to not eventually break in service. Window regulators in Mercedes
cars are a prime example.

Not too much necessary. The part probably cracked and the crack propagated
along one leg. Once broken, the additional movement stressed the second leg to
break. Once cracked it probably wasn't properly perpendicular anymore, yet was
still washing. Also, pot metal tends to warp with age, so no decent engineer
would
have used it for anything truly critical. My guess is that glued good is good
enough.
You are relying on the cracked edges joining up again rather closely.

I'd use a Dremel metal brush for cleanup, wherever the regular Makita wouldn't
reach.

As far as fitting wood goes, we're talking more about whittling than any kind of
tight fit. You're just space-filling, to avoid going broke with JB-Weld. I'm
guessing
an hour of labor, plus glue curing time. Plus re-assembly.

I would clean and rough up the metal thoroughly. Then rig a clamp or jigs
to hold the piece so that one of the broken off pieces can sit back in place
without aid. Then I'd mix a bit of JB-weld and dab it all along the break,
both edges. Then sit the broken piece on and let it cure. This will tack
the piece in place. Then do this for the other break. Once you have a single
intact part again you then begin reinforcing the breaks with wood, metal,
and glue according to your master plan. You MUST reinforce the repair,
the first gluing alone will be very weak.

Won't take too much time, but there will be a lot of idle time while glue
cures. You don't have to wait any longer than it takes to become firm,
except for once at the end to let everything get strong.

You get a lot more street cred for fixing something than for buying new.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the washing machine

2020-05-24 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Oft-overlooked costs of replacement are the hauling and disposal of
the old, the time it takes to install, hook up, and learn about the new one.
The time it takes to re-train all operators on how to best use it, etc.
Plus packaging disposal, cleanup, patching wall dings...

Keeping one you _like_ going is usually worth it, unless the repair
costs get stupid. (As they usually are on anything with a CPU in it,
fairly soon.)

I pay for my water. Not a lot, in comparison to some areas, but it's not
free. Front loaders use less water which is the main reason I bought
this one.

I do have our old top-loader out in the garage, which I will probably
use until I decide whether to repair or replace the LG, assuming it's
still water-tight. It's been sitting for at least 4 years.

Took the back panel off and can see the motor but not the bearing. Turns
fairly easily by hand but something is scraping.

The current base level LG front-loader (without WiFi and other useless
gizmos, and basically the current model repacement for what I have) is
on sale at Lowes right now so I might just do that and be done with it.

Any issues with mildew in your Maytag? That was mentioned many times in
the reviews I've read. Never had an issue with mildew or odor in the
LG. Maybe because we use it almost daily.

Someone (off-list) said I should look at Staber. They use industry
standard bearings and parts, designed and manufactured to be easy to
repair. But they are 3x the price of the LG and have an 8-week lead time
on orders.

No, it's not. But not too horrible if all it needs is a reasonably-priced

We bought a Samsung refrigerator about 2 years ago. While the refrigerator
itself is so far good, their ice makers are total piles of crap. Ours is a
French door refrigerator with the freezer in the bottom. It has 2 ice makes one
up top for the door and one in the bottom freezer. The bottom one works fine
but the top one does not work more often that not. When it drops ice it
continually gets jammed up and won’t drop further ice. It then often ends up
turning into a huge block of ice that is very difficult to remove. I will never
buy another one again.

the machine had to be nearly completely disassembled but it was not too hard of
a job. It’s nice and quiet now.

Washing machine suddenly very noisy tonight. LG front-loader, probably
close to 10 years old. Went to check on it and found the wash tub is
full of smoke and smoke is pouring out of the detergent tray.

So I'm guessing it's the main tub bearing, which repair clinic sells for
$20 but says it is a "very difficult" repair due to the amount of
disassembly required. From pictures, the bearing sits in a heavy plastic
"rear drum" but from the smoke I'm guessing maybe it's melted. Will try
to open it up tomorrow. The rear drum with bearing is NLA.

Assuming it's not worth it or possible to repair, any recommendations on
replacement? I've found that GE is highly rated but my last GE
appliance (refrigerator) was a disaster so I had been thinking I would
never buy the brand again.

Was pretty happy with this LG washer until now, I guess 10 years is a
reasonable lifespan.

Glanced at Miele and Bosch but they are very expensive and seem to be
much lower capacity. 2.5 cu. ft. compared to 4.5 or 5 cu. ft. for LG,
