How often do you replace glow plugs? They aren't terribly expensive and they're WAY easier to do on the older cars. I like the older car to work on, less hoses and such cluttering up the place. If you're cruising around town I really like the York AC compressor too, it'll freeze you right out. Yes, I have had monovalve problems like everyone else. Once they were fixed, however, they didn't break again, like most Mercedes repairs. I am not a big fan of the manual s/r in my two 123 wagons because I have two surgically repaired shoulders (one of each), but at least I don't have to stop the car and get out of the driver's seat to adjust them, as would be the case if the cars had crank windows. The sunroof is manual - those a re far superior to the electric ones in my experience (if you HAVE to have a hole in the roof). I wonder if the staining around the sunroof and headliner is from using contact cement to re-attach the headliner? Re: [MBZ] 240D Cabriolet Motors, Raleigh ACC
ACC is of NO value over manual controls, IF it runs. It is actually of LESS value, because your options are very limited. ACC is disastrously expensive to repair and a total PITA to try to diagnose. BY FAR the most money I have spent to keep MBs on the road is for the fracking ACCMore than I spent for most cars i've ever owned. Costs more than a 603 head. ACC allows NO differentiation of left side/right side. ACC does not allow you have the defrost on without the blower going FULL BLAST! It is very annoying. This is by far my greatest annoyance. countless nights, and some days, I've had to drive with one hand while switching the DEF on, then the EC, back and forth for 6 or 8 hours. Manual controls let you run def with no blower (air circ from car moving) or blower at any speed. My total cost for maintaining manual heating/defrost over 40 years is a dollar two for some o-rings and a little waterpump grease. IMHO, the absolute epitome of heater/Defrost is the 110/111/112/113 series, and carried over into 114/115, but not the 116. My ideal new MB if money was no object: OM603 engine (yeah, the car would have to be shipped to lower slobovia) 5 speed trans with diff gearing near 3.0, manual driver's window and LR window. Electric RF and RR windows, Rear window Def, Vacuum locks, ala 123, A key switch and key lock doors, ala 123, tars on no less than 65 profile, manual sunroof, DIN1 hole for a radio, manual seats, outside mirrors, both sides, 2 wipers. Actually, except for ACC and a few electric things I don't want, an SDL is pretty close. 123.123.10 is pretty close also. I'd love to walk into the MB stealership and tell em I want a car built to my spec, then give em these specs, and show em the cash. They'd fall all over themselves until the factory tells em "no way." Then they'd throw me out. ACC is WONDERFUL when it works - but is a real pain in the ass when it doesn't. I have never heard of a vacuum pod on the right side of a 240D; all of the documentation I have makes no mention of it. If I didn't have so many things to do, I'd go out and look at our car. Craig Got it! I finally figured out I had a T connector i was using with the (HF Not mity) vac pump that was leaking, giving me 0 vacuum on every test. After I changed that the electric/vacuum switch by 107 was good, as was the rest of the line back to the start in front of the firewall. The number 107: vacuum element for leg room flap holds no vacuum, so that is the culprit. Guess I'll ask Tom Hanson at the classic Center the cost of that and the door lock pod. BTW, the book does not show the vacuum/electric switch for 107. Both are located in front and to the right of the glove box. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Since most of the 240D system is manual, thankfully, I am trying to figure out what is missing if I just leave the HVAC vacuum system unhooked. There is a flapper on the far right that is supposed to pull in and close the flap with vacuum. The default leaves the far right dash vent open. I don't see any problem with leaving that vent open. I have not figured out what else the vacuum does. I have taken apart all I can without taking out the fronts seats and the console, but I still don't see other vacuum connections or lines. A green yellow tube runs under the windshield near the firewall just under the window to the vacuum pod at the far right. [MBZ] 240D intrigues me!
So as you all know, I replaced that bitch of a hose under the thermostat housing a few days ago. I drove around town for a few days, no leaks from the new hose, no overheating. There was however a small amount of coolant loss from the rubber o ring that goes around the tstat and keeps the housing cover from leaking. I didn't make anything of it as that tstat has been in and out so many times that the seal is probably compressed. Anyway, I need to get this car to MA where it's registered so that I can have it inspected-already received a fine in the mail. So I head off to Boston today from Brunswick, Maine-roughly a 140 mile trip. The car performed flawlessly, cruising at 65-70 mph, smooth, powerful, temp holding steady even in some stop and go traffic towards the tail end of the trip. I was so proud of the little 240D, when literally, as I pull into my driveway the temp gauge starts rising! So weird. I pop the hood, the upper rad hoses are super firm, coolant is dripping from rad overflow tube but my newly replaced hose is not leaking. Well back to square one! [MBZ] 240D on CL and a pin stripe
As I mentioned earlier, here is my 240D up on CL: http://newjersey.craigslist.org/cto/4872031344.html And in related news, some photos of the pin stripe I had done on the car: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jaimekop/16416604751/ and https://www.flickr.com/photos/jaimekop/15798313533/ I found the stripper who did these cars in the early 80s for the local MB dealers. I've owned several cars with his work, as they're very common around here. I had him do this car, as I really like the look. He matches his style of 30 years ago exactly, which, of course, is important to me. [MBZ] 240D exhaust
The 240D got loud today. Discovered the patch pipe just to the rear of the bend in the downpipe was cracking at the weld. Further investigation led to a thumb sized hole on the inside. Well, it needs a new pipe...Same as it did maybe 15 years ago. I took two hose clamps and a piece of heavy flashing that I have been tempted to throw out several times, but saved for some reason. Put the car up on ramps, crawled under, wrapped the flashing around, put the hose clamps on it and tightened up the clamps. Diesel Muffler bandaid 101. It will probably last for 5 years, then I will replace the flashing again. That should be good until 2024. 123 Diesels are great, but I love the OM603 too! Oh, By the way, 15 years ago, I didn't buy a new pipe. That is when the patch pipe was welded in. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post.
