Is it the Myth video player or Xine? As I understand it, if you try
and view 16:9 content it will change resolution, rather than rescale
the video.
Your modelines say that's OK, so that's what it's doing... If you
don't want it to do that, then remove the modelines (except the
800x600) and it won't be able to...

Or switch off the option to use Xrandr...

Hello! I've read quite a few HowTo's for mythgame. Sounds great :)

You can also use ext2 or 3, they are both resizeable, too.

I use also lvm with 400gb and one 200gb drive, works great.

As mentioned by others, using Logical Volume Management is probably
your best bet. You may also find life easier to use ReiserFS for the
filesystem on your newly created logical volume. This will allow you
to resize the filesystem in the future, should you add a 3rd drive.

I'm currently running with 4 drives, giving me 450 Gigs of storage,
just a bunch of old drives I had kicking around.

I actually installed the Webmin package, to manage the LVM and set it
up. Quick and easy. Make sure if you're going to use ReiserFS, that
you install the Reiser utilities too.

Cheers.

Yeah. I have something similar. Killing off mythfrontend just so
"coarse". I would really prefer a more graceful exiting of

It really seems that Exit needs to be a jump point (I think).

Thanx for the idea though.

How do I "load the commercial skip list"? I used ffmpeg to
manually transcode a couple programs. Is there a way to skip
commercials with ffmpeg? (I don't think so.) I tried nuvexport but it
stopped with an error and it was easier to use what I know (ffmpeg)
rather than trying to figure out what is wrong with nuvexport.

Anyway, I thought that mythtv was supposed to be doing this (transcode
and cut commercials) automatically after it finished recording. Am I
wrong about this? Does everyone have to run nuvexport manually?

Excellent tip Adam. (I am using Ubuntu AMD64 actually and the logs are

seems that commercials ARE being flagged, but there is some strange

You are using the wrong command-line arguments. You need to be using
"-s" and "-c":

% mythtranscode -c 1025 -s 2005-04-28T19:30:00

Easiest thing to do is to use Myth frontend to Start Transcoding, and

Thanks Kevin, I am embarrassed that I missed that.
If I understand things correctly, mythtv calls mythtranscode after it
finishes recording. I tried using mythtranscode from the command line
to see what is happening and it failed:

%mythtranscode -i 1058_20050921163000_2005092117.nuv -f foo.avi

Stream: 0 Type: 0
Stream: 1 Type: 1
Input #0, mpeg, from '1058_20050921163000_2005092117.nuv':
  Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg2video, 480x480, 29.97 fps, 6000 kb/s
  Stream #0.1: Audio: mp2, 48000 Hz, stereo, 384 kb/s
mythtranscode: mpeg2trans.cpp:668: bool
MPEG2trans::process_video(AVPacket*, bool): Assertion `0' failed.
Aborted

So perhaps my problems are with mythtranscode and NOT incorrect
settings. Any one have any idea on what this error message means and
how to fix it?

I was under the impression that this functionality was added
in 0.18.1 as an internal app instead of an external config/shell call.
He implies that it is not for capture ... just channel.

I don't think deletions are logged in the mythtv backend log.

You could try the MySQL logs. In Ubuntu they are at
/var/log/mysql/mysql.log; you'll see deletions occur (with
timestamps), but there will be no indication of why they happened.

[mythtv-users] Suggestions for HDTV to mpeg4/xvid conversion

2005-09-21 Thread Byron Poland
I'm curious as to what people are using to convert 720p or 1080i
content to xvid or mpeg4 including cutting out commercials. nuvexport
pretty much bombs on me, and while myth's internal transcoding engine
seems to work, the av sync is spotty if I use a cutlist, and doesn't
seem to beable to drop the framerate (for 720p) down to 29 or 25 fps.

Thanks.

On the mythfrontend settings I have the appropriate checkboxes checked

mythweb when I set it to record a program the checkboxes for
"Auto-flag commercials" is checked. However, the shows are not
transcoded (they are left in .nuv format), and the commercials are
still present. But then it HAS to be transcoded in order for
commercials to be cut, right? But Mythweb also has "has cutlist: no"

Can anyone show me where I might have gone wrong here?

I believe Adam accurately answered your question about the NUV. As for
the commerical flagging, you notice that it is "flagging", not "cutting"
that is done. If you are looking for how to automatically convert your
commercial flags into a cutlist used by transcoding, search the list
archives for a thread titled "Automatically load commercial skip list
into cutlist" and you'll see that Chris Pinkham gave an excellent
example of how to do this just 5 days ago.

Re: [mythtv-users] program remote's power key to stop mythfrontend?

2005-09-21 Thread Mark Kundinger

You can have a shell script that responds to the power key and kills
the frontend:

http://www.wilsonet.com/mythtv/tips.php

(half way down, about the "wife button")

I used a slightly tweaked out version which will also try to restart
the backend if it's not running, but that isn't as useful as I thought.

Re: [mythtv-users] Auto transcode and commercial cutting not happening

2005-09-21 Thread Adam Bodnar
Transcoding still keeps it in a .nuv file.

.nuv is just a container for the video stream. Just like .avi doesn't
mean it's always a divx. It could be a xvid or 3ivx or I think even an
mpeg 4.

As for commercial cutting, it doesn't delete the commercials from the
video. It just marks the time or frame(can't remember which) the
commercial was detected and depending on your settings Myth may notify
you or auto skip or do nothing.

Now, you can load the commercial skip list into the cut list and then
have something like nuvexport cut the commercials out when the video
is exported out.

Re: [mythtv-users] No PVR-350 TV Out connector

2005-09-21 Thread Bennett Leve
You can get it from Hauppauge. There is two different units sold. One
will connect to the 350 on the card in the box and allow you to put the
tvout and other outs to rear expansion opening. The other choice is the
cable that connects into the svideo looking connector on the back of the
PVR.

Both are about $15 US dollars from Hauppauge.

I checked Radio Shack and it does not carry it.

You could contact Hauppauge directly and see if they can sort you out.
The lead reminds me of the older ATI breakout leads ( 8 or so pins
carrying audio, S-Video/composite video) so one of these *may* work
too, but obviously standard disclaimers apply and this would be a last
resort.

Good luck on the quest,

Well, my master backend (the one with the firewire port) has
libiec61883, libavc1394, librom1394, libraw1394, and libdc1394. It goes
without saying that I have the -devel versions installed too. I
compared your lsmod output to mine and they're the same. So that looks
fine on your end. In mythtv-setup, when you setup a firewire input, you
should see the option for internal firewire channel changing in the same
place that you normally see it for capture cards - in "Input
Connections", leave the "External Channel Changing Program" field
blank...

Hmmm yup yup yup ,
I may be dense ... lemme walk through this ...
# mythtv-setup
> Select 4. Input Connectors

(This is the Dialog where the External Channel Change App Input Box is
[Note: it's blank])
There is however no mention (on this screen) of the word Firewire or 1934 or
6200

Initially (using the 6200ch in contrib) I received the following:
node 1: vendor_id = 0x11d8 model_id = 0x
Could not find Motorola DCT-6200 on the 1394 bus.

I read some docs ... attempted to hack it and add my id's
a tweak on the output and:
node 1: vendor_id = 0x11d8 model_id = 0x
Warning: Your Unit Spec ID (0x005e) is unexpected.
Warning: Your Unit Software Version (0x0001) is unexpected.
AV/C Command: 007 = Op1=0x00487C20 Op2=0x00487C20 Op3=0x00487C27
then the channel change fails.

My box is brand new (just picked it up last week) and clearly the CTL_CMD0
(Op1,2&3)
is not a signal that my box is happy with.

Any way to find out if this 6200's ID's are listed/supported by the current
implementation?

 Brett

Is MythTV getting the TV signal from a firewire input or from S-vid? If
its s-vid, I dont think you can use the firewire connection to change
the channels for that input. As I understand it (which very possibly
could be wrong) you can only change the channel thru firewire if the TV
Signal comming to your MythTV box is thru firewire. Reading the
response from Ian, he says "In mythtv-setup, when you setup a *firewire
input*, you should see the option for internal firewire channel changing
in the same place that you normally see it for capture cards - in "Input
Connections", leave the "External Channel Changing Program" field
blank..." he says to set up a FireWire INPUT, not s-vid.

[mythtv-users] libqt3-mt problems

2005-09-21 Thread Mailing List

Help!

I have been trying to install mythtv for a few days
now.  First i tried with debian stable, and even after doing an 'apt-get
build-dep mythtv', i still had some serious dependency issues.  After
reading quite a bit it looked like i should have better luck running debian
unstable.

So now under my unstable debian system i ran
'apt-get build-dep mythv'.  now when i try and do a 'apt-get install myhtv'
it says there are issues with the front & backend.  if i do a 'apt-get
install mythtv-backend' and it says that libmyth-0.18.1 cannot be install
because libqt3-mt (>= 3:3.3.4) cannot be installed.

i obviously cannot 'apt-get install libqt3-mt'
because there is no stright libqt3-mt package.  libqt3c102-mt is installed,
and i have also installed libqt3-mt-dev.

What can i do?

Thanks,
J

Your CPU seems a little slow to do a good job playing HDTV unless you
use XvMC. XvMC has been rather touchy for me (from 0.17, and through
fairly recent SVNs) and I find myth to be much more stable with
XvMC turned off. Since I have a 3Ghz P4, I have the option
of turning it off -- you wouldn't.

It is not a problem with the more recent Nvidia binary drivers.

Are you still seeing it with the Version 1.4 8/14/05? That has a fix for
the above problem. With my -200 the box occasionally stops talking on
the serial port requiring a power cycle before it will change any
channel again. Since I am polling it every 90 seconds for my signal
strength graph I suspect that triggers it more often.

Does you D10-200 box lock up occasionally and need the power plug pulled
to get it working again? I see it with both the box I am using with
mythtv and boxes that are on TV's. Front panel power button won't do
anything when trying to turn it on.

That's exactly my point, 16:9 goes off the screen, it doesn't
matter if
it's the desktop or Xine.
All s-video out graphics cards generate an analogue signal, just
because
you're using the same modeline with the new card as with the old one
doesn't necessarily mean that the picture will appear in the same
place
on the tv/monitor. The modeline controls the pixels x-y, the physical
width-height and the x-y positioning on the screen, but it's all
relative due to inconstancies in the hardware.

Remove all the modelines apart from the ones you need, find a good
modeline explanation on Google and start tinkering.
Adjust them a little at a time and with a bit of work, you'll be
able to
tweak it so it's perfect.

I understand what you are saying, but could you please explain to me
how or why Myth is switching to a different modeline during video
playback? It shouldn't be doing that should it? The modeline I'm
running is 4:3, and the picture doesn't go off the screen when viewing
the X desktop or the Myth UI. Why would it suddenly switch to a
different modeline for video playback? Shouldn't it just scale the
16:9 video to fit the 4:3 modeline?

Is it the Myth video player or Xine? As I understand it, if you try and
view 16:9 content it will change resolution, rather than rescale the video.

I know how to program lircrc and so, just not sure if there is a way in
myth to "press a key" to immediately do what a bunch of 's will do.

Is this what is called "jump points"? Is there a jump point for exit?
I'm not seeing one in mythweb's key bindings screen.

Short of a jump point, anyone got any ideas?

2005-09-21 Thread Rob Bongiovi
Boy, I saw something very similar, but you won't like
my solution.

When I hooked up my new ED plasma, I was trying to run
it in its native resolution via DVI-HDMU cable (which
was automatically recognized). I had the same problem
you describe: 4:3 and GUI displayed OK (the 4:3 with
the black bars), but the HDTV was stretched so the
right 3rd was off the screen.

What fixed it for me was switching to a 1080i (HDTV)
modeline. Everything works fine now. But that
obviously won't work for you. However, you may want to
full around with different display modes.

BTW - the only similarily I see is that we were both
using fanless FX 5200 cards. Like I said, I am running
through a DVI-HDMI connector. I'm using the 7676
Nvidia drivers and 18.1 for mythTV on a FC4 box.

Hope this helps.

Jonny,

I've attached my xorg.conf file for you to look at - it's used for
TV-Out only (i.e. no monitor), PAL-I and widescreen TV (the
DisplaySize line). Res is 800x600 24bit. Driver version is 8.21.10 but
I'll be upgrading the box tomorrow so will try the latest 2.6.12
compliant driver. My graphics chipset is the ATI Radeon 9100IGP

machine so don't know if I'd have the same issues.

Neil,

I enclose an annotated description of how I use tv_grab_dvb (sorry if
it's a bit tedious, might be useful for others), and what I think you
should try in order to get things working (first thing is probably to
clear out your channels table because you seem to have 4 copies of
everything).

PART ONE

First thing - let me run through the way I use tv_grab_dvb and
mythfilldatabase (and how it gets the info into the database:

i) My chanidents file (for Sutton Coldfield, edited for radio only):

14336 radio-1.bbc.co.uk
14400 radio-2.bbc.co.uk
14464 radio-3.bbc.co.uk
14528 fm.radio-4.bbc.co.uk
17920 radio-5.bbc.co.uk
17984 sportsextra.radio-5.bbc.co.uk
18048 6music.bbc.co.uk
18112 bbc7.bbc.co.uk
18176 1xtra.bbc.co.uk

Note the number and the XMLTV ID. The number (Service ID?) is used in
conjunction with the chanidents file below, and the XMLTV ID is used
to match the data against the channels in my mythconverg database. In
effect, this file bridges between the DVB channel/EPG data and the
mythconverg database.

ii) My edited channels.conf file:

BBC Radio
1:658166670:INVERSION_OFF:BANDWIDTH_8_MHZ:FEC_2_3:FEC_1_2:QAM_64:TRANSMISSION_MODE_2K:GUARD_INTERVAL_1_32:HIERARCHY_NONE:0:6210:14336

As you can see, the final data value for each entry in channels.conf
matches with one of the entries in my chanidents file.

iii) In order that MFDB can run successfully, I ensure that there is
only 1 copy of each channel per sourceid, and that it has the correct
XMLTV ID (so that it matches those in the chanidents file). I found it
much quicker to edit the DB directly using phpMyAdmin to ensure the
channels were setup properly. I use XMLTV IDs only in my MythTV setups
because the other grabber I use also uses these.

iv) My radio listings grabber script:

#!/bin/bash

{

/home/mythtv/tv_grab_dvb/tv_grab_dvb -c -t 30 -s >
/home/mythtv/.mythtv/radio.xml
/usr/bin/mythfilldatabase --update --file 1 -1 /home/mythtv/.mythtv/radio.xml
/usr/bin/mythfilldatabase --update --file 3 -1 /home/mythtv/.mythtv/radio.xml

sleep 3
rm -f /home/mythtv/.mythtv/radio.xml

} >/dev/null 2>&1

This script runs tv_grab_dvb with the following options:

-c to use Channel Identifiers from file 'chanidents' - the means the
XMLTV IDs are used in the XML output file
-t 30 to use a timeout of 30s
-s to run silently (even though I send output to /dev/null

Mythfilldatabase (MFDB) then runs to populate the program info on 2
different sources (in my case my DVB channels (sourceid=1) and my NTL
channels(sourceid=3)).

v) I have an entry in my crontab to run the script daily to ensure
program data is up to date.

PART TWO

What (I think) you should do:

i) Remove your channels from the DB and rescan, making sure there is
only one of each listed. Perhaps rerun mythtvsetup and answer yes to
both questions at the start to start afresh.
ii) Associate the XMLTV ID with each channel you want listings for.
iii) Edit your chanidents file so that it contains the correct service
IDs and XMLTV IDs.
iv) Run tv_grab_dvb to generate an XML file (I manually edited the
source for tv_grab_dvb to hardcode the location of the two files it
needs - chanidents and channels.conf - as this can cause problems in
scripts)
v) Run mythfilldatabase on the XML file to import the listings.
vi) Let me know how you got on.

It's entirely possible to use the dvb.guide IDs instead, and this
should work in exactly the

Two spaces after a period (or exclamation or question mark) was a
practice that was started with typewriters to make it easier on the eye
to see breaks in sentences which were hard to pick out given their
monospaced font. With the advent of computers and proportional fonts
like Times New Roman, the practice has since shifted to one space.

However, one could argue that since this list is plain text and most
likely read on a machine in a monospaced font, that one should put two
spaces after a period.

This is way OT, but some people do prefer to use 2 spaces after a
full-stop (Period to you Americans), rather than one. It used to be
the tradition (on Typewriters) to use two spaces after the end of a
sentence to break them up a little.

Hmmm yup yup yup ,

David asked some more questions off list but the gist of my response is
(1) to make sure the two packages equivalent (installing the same files
to the same places) and then (2) use equivs to create an empty package
that tells debian you do have the functionality of libqt3 installed.

(1) You can see what files your installed package has supplied by going
dpkg -L libqt3c102 and you can find what the debian version supplies by
searching for it at http://packages.qa.debian.org/common/index.html.

(2) If they're indeed equivalent you can follow the instructions at
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-helpers.en.html to
create a new package, who's name doesn't matter, that claims to provide
libqt3-mt or whatever it is you're missing. If you want to be extra
clever you can make your equiv package depend on the ubuntu equivalent.
You then install that equivalent package and voila, no more dependancy
problem.

I've never used equivs and I don't run ubuntu but over the past year or

not hose your system irreversibly. Also, I may not be explaining this

If you look at the remote control with a digital camera or video
camera you may see whether you can see the infra-red pulses coming
from its transmitter LED.

Please post your /etc/lircd.conf file, your /etc/modprobe.conf or
/etc/modules.conf file, and the outputs of the following commands:

ll /dev/lirc*

rpm -qa|grep "lirc"

service lircd status

Neil,

Please mail me your channels table from the MythTV database. I use
tv_grab_dvb to get my radio listings and would be happy to try and get
you up and running. The fact that you can watch the channels in LiveTV
makes me believe most of the underlying DVB setup is correct, but

Not only that but it will get worse as time goes on. If it's heat
related the cost to fix it won't top $50 in most cases, and even
getting a new huge power supply won't likely run you more than $150.

I'm sure its software related. I should have been more specific.
Autologin stopped working, then I started to get bad memory leaks and
have to kill processes in order for the system to be responsive again.
Most of the time it happens when I'm at work so the machine just gets
rebooted... joy. Almost all of the time I can't play videos in Meedio
or Beyond Media other than recorded TV shows. If I want to watch a divx
rip for example, I have to vnc in and load up vlc or what ever. Real pain

And I'm using a PVR-250, I should have mentioned that before as well.

That's exactly my point, 16:9 goes off the screen, it doesn't matter ifit's the desktop or Xine. All s-video out graphics cards generate an analogue signal, just becauseyou're using the same modeline with the new card as with the old one
doesn't necessarily mean that the picture will appear in the same placeon the tv/monitor. The modeline controls the pixels x-y, the physicalwidth-height and the x-y positioning on the screen, but it's allrelative due to inconstancies in the hardware.
Remove all the modelines apart from the ones you need, find a goodmodeline explanation on Google and start tinkering.Adjust them a little at a time and with a bit of work, you'll be able totweak it so it's perfect.

I understand what you are saying, but could you please explain to me
how or why Myth is switching to a different modeline during video
playback?  It shouldn't be doing that should it?  The
modeline I'm running is 4:3, and the picture doesn't go off the screen
when viewing the X desktop or the Myth UI.  Why would it suddenly
switch to a different modeline for video playback?  Shouldn't it
just scale the 16:9 video to fit the 4:3 modeline?

I know this will probably get me boo'd off the list... but are you
sure your stability problems stem from the software/OS? Although I
think you'll find knoppmyth/MythTV to be very cool, but if you're
issue is really ends up to be heat related, or power related, or
something of that ilk... the symptom *may* follow you to linux/mythtv.

Then again, for stability linux may be "the cure" you're looking for ;)

Is this related to the "Stretched" preview in the Live TV Guide (When
the video is now square (480x480, for example), the right-hand side of
the image is chopped off and the video is displayed stretched).

Quick and dirty solution is to just use mdadm:

mdadm --monitor --mail="[EMAIL PROTECTED]" --daemonize /dev/md[01]

Just have a look at the mdadm man page... There are some
limitations to this style of monitoring, specifically if the daemon
should die, how would you know? But a little scripting to respawn
should get you around that, if it is happening to you...

[mythtv-users] about to take the plunge

2005-09-21 Thread Bill Omer

Hi all

I've been thinking more and more about converting my PVR over to Myth.
I'm currently using Win2k with BTV and Meedio and using a Firefly
remote. Reliability has become an issue, as well as some usability. I
would feel much more comfortable with a PVR running Linux.

So I'm thinking about pulling my pvr box out of its cabinet and
installing KnoppMyth tonight. I wanted to ask the list if I might be
setting my self up for a fight. I have the following hard ware
configuration.

P4 1.8Ghz
1GB Ram
40GB OS HD
160GB + 120GB for storage
gForce 5200FX 128MB
Firefly USB remote (x10 based)
56" HDTV (1080i supported)

So my questions are:
I've never messed with LVM. Has there been many problems with using LVM
on KnoppMyth before?

Will using 1920x1080 with a DVI cable be a problem?

And I have a pretty high WAF how has other's WAF been effected by
using Myth, specifically if you are coming from a Windows-based PVR?

[mythtv-users] Myth mirroring

2005-09-21 Thread Reggie Braswell
Taking the plunge and moving up to FC4. This time around I chose to go the software mirror path with two 80GB SATA disks. Carved it up with /boot on md0 and the rest via LVM as md1. Question I have for the group is the machine is sitting in an entertainment center with mythfrontend running all the time. Any tools or plugins for myth to monitor /proc/mdstat or something of that nature to check to see if you lost a drive etc... or is it that if you lost a drive the box is going to tank anyway so you will know no matter what? I have simulated a failed disk by powering off and unplugging the cable from the primary sata drive and it boots up fine from the secondary, but am a little leary to just yank power to one of the drives to see how Linux responds. Thanks... Regg

The issue has been fixed if you're using the script found at

I've been using this script on my D10-200 box at least since

recording Stargate SG-1, NFL Football, and the odd Buffy episode from
our OTA channels which DTV stuck < 100.

I really appreciate the help.

My desktop is definitely running at 800x600.  This is a 4:3
mode.  There are other modelines defined, but as I said before I
didn't change anything in XF86Config-4 when I switched video
cards.  I'll delete everything besides 800x600 to see if it makes
a difference.   The Myth UI is running full screen.

Let me try to clarify the problem.

Desktop resolution is 4:3, displaying on my TV via s-video.
I'm recording OTA HD.

4:3 shows that were broadcast with 16:9 aspect ratio display with grey
bars on the sides.  Changing Myth to 16:9 Zoom aspect ratio makes
it use the full screen.  This is the behavior I expect.

16:9 shows that used to take the full width of the screen with black
bars at the top and bottom now have 10-15% of the picture pushed off
the right hand side of the screen.  Regardless of what aspect
ratio I tell Myth to use for display, some of the picture is always
lost.  16:9 stretch seems to be the closest to keeping all the
picture.  With my old video card, I could leave the myth aspect
ratio set to "default" and I wouldn't lose any picture.

Re: [mythtv-users] Mounting two hard drives to single mounting point

2005-09-21 Thread Jason McLeod
As mentioned by others, using Logical Volume Management is probably
your best bet. You may also find life easier to use ReiserFS for the
filesystem on your newly created logical volume. This will allow you
to resize the filesystem in the future, should you add a 3rd drive.

I'm currently running with 4 drives, giving me 450 Gigs of storage,
just a bunch of old drives I had kicking around.

I actually installed the Webmin package, to manage the LVM and set it
up. Quick and easy. Make sure if you're going to use ReiserFS, that
you install the Reiser utilities too.

Cheers.

Bind errors are *almost* always because the port is already
being used. Do "netstat -l -n | grep 6543" and see if it
shows up. If so, some other software (or another copy of
mythbackend) is using it.

[mythtv-users] UK Nova-T Crystal Palace EPG Problems with tv_grab_dvb

2005-09-21 Thread Neil
Hi All,

total Myth TV newbie here, having some problems with the EPG.

I've successfully set up MythTV and the Web Front End, and can happily
watch all of the Freeview channels in 'LiveTV' mode and record *some*
programs (others fail, but I suspect that is due to the main problem).
However, I'm having some problems grabbing the data for the EPG.

Initially I set up a standard XMLTV grab, and that was *partially*
successful. I say partial, as it only grabbed the data for a few
channels.

Whilst looking for a solution I came across the tv_grab_dvb program. And
followed the instructions on
http://www.ethics-gradient.net/myth/mythdvb2.html

Sadly, this didn't seem to work. I successfully get an xml file full of
tv program data, but when I pipe the output into mythfilldatabase, it
doesn't add that data to the guide (there is also an issue of duplicate
channel id's - its seems to think that both cbeebies and UK TV History
have an id of 402!)

I think that the problem is something to do with channel id's not
matching up in my chanidents file and the channel table in the db, but I
am having no luck in finding a solution.

Is anybody out there using tv_grab_dvb to capture data from the Crystal
Palace transmitter? And if so, would it be possible for them to send me
a dump of their channel, dvb_channel, and dvb_pids tables? I realise
that there is one on the site above, but I think it is out of date as
there are some channels missing.

I think that I'd also need a copy of your channels.conf and chanidents
files as well?

Alternatively, if there's any other advice you could give as to how to
solve this problem, please let me know. I can happily find my way around
Mysql and the mythconverg db and dump the data here if that would help.

Many thanks in advance

Neil

I had similar sounding problems, and all I did was modify the xml file -
changing some of the numbers to move the OSD around a little. I don't
know of any good resources out there for starting from scratch, but poking
through the OSD themes that are already there should give you a good
start.

IIRC, the positioning stuff is 4 numbers, corresponding to x, y, width,

You have compiled mythtv from source if you are running gentoo.

If specific files are not installed, you can always go
to /usr/portage/distfiles and uncompress the source to find what you are

Thanks for the reply. I'll check in portage for the scripts. I realize
myth had been compiled from source, I just thought the mythtv ebuild

[mythtv-users] Playback locks up mythfrontend

2005-09-21 Thread orion
hello there

I'm hoping some of you out there might be able to help me here.
I've had a mythbox for a few years now and it has worked very well.

Recently the hard drive in my box took a dump. So I replaced it and set
about rebuilding my mythtv box.

I've been following the instructions found at
http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php#ts for all of my builds. this time
however, something is wrong.

When I attempt to watch live tv or play a previously recorded program, the
frontend locks up. I hear a few seconds of sound, a black picture and then
lockup. actually the whole interface locks up. I cannot switch between
apps. I can still ssh into the box from my laptop, so I can see that the
backend is still running.

Checking the /var/log/mythtv log shows nothing. I've been able to alt-tab
to the terminal window I launch mythfrontend from and see for a few
seconds the output, but nothing there shows any errors.

the only difference between my previous working box is the hard drive and
the version of fedora core (fc4) I'm using.

I can record programs fine. I can view them with xine. Just the playback
giving me some issues.

I realize that those of you in the know will need more information than
I've provided, so please let me know what you need from me.

Thank you

-Tim

Re: [mythtv-users] directv d10-300 ... impossible?

2005-09-21 Thread Erik Pettersen
There's been some discussion about the D10-300 on byopvr, and the
DTVcontrol site (previously linked to re: home media cables) lists the
D10-300 as NOT compatible

http://www.dtvcontrol.com/index.aspx?content=compat

Now is that because the serial port is hidden and the DTVcontrol
maintainer hasn't noted the "behind the sticker" issue? Or is it
further disabled than that?

Furthermore, has the whole D10 (regardless of 100/200/300) fixed the
"unable to use serial cable for channels under 100" issue brought upon
by a recent DirecTV firmware update still an issue? (it even snared
the series 2 TiVo STB owners with that snafu/issue)

I too suggest getting a used known good serial controllable DirecTV
receiver off ebay or the like... BUT am intersted in peoples
experiences with the D10-300 and serial control and/or if they found a
code/setting for IR blasting... as the question keeps resurfacing in
general.

Thanks! (hope I didn't confuse the issue or aren't too OT)

BTW, re: the USBUIRT, I don't think you "train" the usb-uirt in the
manner you're thinking -- I don't know how it works as I don't own
one... Also, if you didn't get the 56khz receiving version of the
usbuirt, that could also be why it's not "seeing" your direcTV remote,
but that's just a not-so-educated guess on my part!

[mythtv-users] Sample format big-endian AC3 not yet supported

2005-09-21 Thread Marius Schrecker
Hi,

 I'm getting this when I try to play european ac-3 5.1 dvd's.

Xine handles these fine, so I'm guessing I compiles Mplayer or the
supporting libraries with the wrong options.

What should be in place to handle this format, and what compile options
should I check?

Thanks

Either. You can mount them under wherever you tell mythvideo to look

 Ex:

  /data/video - BASE (partition 1)
  /data/video/mount1 - (partition 2)
  /data/video/mount2 - (partition 3)

 Or Symlinks:

  /mount1
  /mount2

  /data/video - BASE
  /data/video/mount1 -> /mount1
  /data/video/mount2 -> /mount2

Or even a mixture of the 2.

I don't think that's the problem.  The X desktop and the Myth UI
both look correct.  Neither of them is getting 10-15% of the
picture chopped off on the right side.  I only see the problem
during 16:9 video playback.  I have Myth configured to use the
same video mode for the GUI and for playback, so it isn't that either.

[mythtv-users] Re: PVR-250 used to work, now stops tuning

2005-09-21 Thread Jeff Piazza
Just an update, perhaps it will help someone else: in this Pundit-R I
have both the PVR-250, and a pc-HD3000.

I removed the machine from the A/V cabinet and hooked it up in a
workspace. The tuner worked, surprisingly, so I hooked it back up to
the main TV, and, of course, the tuner didn't work.

I noticed in the dmesg output some examples of "ivtv: i2c client id
0x02 not found!". (I think it was 0x02, but I'm not completely sure.)
I'm still not sure exactly what that means, but just to make sure it
wasn't some new software/configuration issue (despite no change in
either), I removed the pc-HD3000 card, and now found the tuner to work
reliably.

I reassembled once more (two pci cards in the Pundit-R is a tight fit),
and noticed contact between some of the leads on the PVR-250 and the
metal shield on the pc-HD3000's tuner. I now think this was the
problem. A square of shirt cardboard and I haven't had any problems
since!

[mythtv-users] 1080i not available on FC4?

2005-09-21 Thread Mat Kyne
I have a sony 4:3 HDTV with 2 component imputs and 1 DVI input. I could not
get 1080i to work over the DVI input, and neither could anyone else, (unless
something has changed recently). So I bought a Crescendo Systems Transcoder
to convert the analog VGA signal into Component. It works great and is
powered off the PCI slot. My box is setup to dual boot into Linux and Win2K.
I have booted into Windows and used Powerstrip to setup my HD resolutions. I
decided that tv looked better with some overscan so I setup true 480p, 720p
and 1080i resolutions using Powerstrip. I used a few pictures that I made
as the background image and made sure the screen was centered, and once I
got everything the way I liked it, I cut and pasted the Linux Modelines into
my xorg.conf file. (that I originally got from Jarod.) Well I rebooted into
Linux, and backed up my xorg.conf file and replaced it with my new one.
Crtl-Alt-Backspace to restart X, and use the new resolutions. It booted into
720p no problem, but when I tried to change the resolution to 1080i, the
resolution was not available. Does anyone know why KDE would not see or
allow the 1920x1080i resolution? I am posting my modified xorg.conf file.
Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Sounds simple enough with mythvideo. I just point mythvideo to /data/video
and mount or symlink to my various other directories. Mythvideo will

AFAIK, unionfs doesn't span multiple computer. And even if it did, I
would be reluctant to do any writing to that filesystem. To avoid data
loss and keep things clean, I would mount all the drives in one box, use
LVM, and then share the ONE filesystem with all that needed it.

Because I came from the FreeBSD world and already had a server running
this OS, my shares are on that box and I'm using an equivalent to LVM.
Because I also have Windows at home, I share using smbfs. When I ran
out of room to mount drives in the physical case, I opted for firewire
(which at that time was much better than USB) and started adding
external firewire enclosures to house my IDE drives. This is how I'm
doing things now and it works great!

[mythtv-users] 16:9 video playback cutting off 10% on right side

2005-09-21 Thread Brian Steele
System specs:

Myth 0.18
Nvidia FX5200, 7667 drivers
2x HD-3000 capture card
800x600 through TV-out over s-video.

I had my Myth system setup and everything was working great...until the
fan on the video card went bad and the system started locking up.

I was using a Nvidia 6200 AGP video card but I replaced it with a
fanless FX5200 card.  After I replaced the video card and
rebooted, the Myth interface looked exactly the same as before, filling
the screen with very little overscan.  I then attempted to
playback some recorded TV and discovered that on 16:9 material, at
least 10-15% of the picture is missing on the right side.  4:3
material seems to work fine.

This did not happen with the 6200 card.  I didn't change any
settings in .nvidia-settings-rc or in XF86Config-4, so I don't know
what's causing this.  Does anybody have any ideas?

Logical Volume Manager (LVM) is what allows you to create a file system
that spans multiple drives. Doing this currently on my master backend
system with four drives.

[mythtv-users] Mounting two hard drives to single mounting point

2005-09-21 Thread Azmat
Hi,

I'm not sure if this has been asked before or if its even possible, but
is there any way to mount two HD's to a single mounting point in
Linux?  I just added a second HD to my mythbox and was hoping
there might be a way for /video to point to both of them.  Thanks.Azmat

Just as mythfilldatabase can be scheduled, I would prefer to see a
similar option for AutoExpire.  Two ideas come to mind, but I'm sure
there are many others.  One choice could be to add an option to
mythtv-setup allowing a window for looking through the recordings
and cleaning out the "too-many-episodes" candidates.

Another choice could be that when the system determines it is
idle (and about to shutdown), look through the recordings and clean
out the old recordings.  (To me, this is like having the office cleaning
crew come in and prepare the work area for the next workday.)

Depending on the specific filesystem to instantaneously erase what
the recording process took half, one, two hours or more to create,
seems to be misplacing the responsibility for cleanup.

As for the specific test of avoiding the discontinuity caused by AutoExpire,
the test was successful.  That is, before recording Letterman and Charlie
Rose last night, I manually deleted just one Letterman show.  And scanning
the Charlie Rose recording all the way to the end showed no glitches at all.
It's only a single test, but that's enough for me to believe that AutoExpire
of a huge recording during the recording made by the PVR-350 causes
an out-of sync problem.  (I'm referring only to my system here.)

Although I didn't mention it before, there is a similar discontinuity in
the recording of Letterman at exactly the same time as in Charlie Rose.
But, the audio and video remain in sync.  A few seconds of Letterman
at the point of the IOBOUND are just lost.

For now, I'll either manually delete old recordings, or change the schedule
to minimize the problem (if that's possible).  Eventually, I'd like to make
a formal feature request, probably asking for an option similar to the
mythfilldatabase scheduling option.

Answering myself, it appears that the NFS storage server, which also
happens to be a Myth frontend machine, had two spontaneous reboots
yesterday. From that machine's logs:

So I guess that following the reboot maybe the mythbackend machine
never got properly in sync with NFS somehow? It seems that the IOBOUND
lines in the backend server came after the NFS server had completely
rebooted so I don't understand that, other than to say that maybe the
backend machine was able to buffer video for 5 minutes before things
got crazy...

Bummer.

packfix is a life saver! It took somewhere around 10-15 minutes to fix

I plan to write a simple shell script tonight to process an entire

[mythtv-users] Bad night of recording - everything hosed

Hi,
Starting last evening we had a really bad night with recording. It
seems that the system was set up to record two programs in parallel
pretty much all through the evening. Additionally there were one or
two people viewing existing recordings while recording was going on.
AFAICT it appears that every program was recorded with some sort of
problem such that now it plays like you were doing a fast forward on
your remote.

Uptime on the backend server is about 3 weeks.

Looking at the logs, again starting last evening, I see this:

12:00 noon would have been a recording of Charlie Rose. 1:30PM would
have been a recording of Sensible Chic. Most likely the system was
doing mythcommflag on CR when the 1:30 show started, but there's
nothing very new about this. Further none of the programs recorded

[mythtv-users] Weird scheduling problem -- doesn't change channel/wrong channel

2005-09-21 Thread Mark J. Small

Hi everybody,

I've run in to a really strange scheduling problem. Given the following
recordings:

12:00 - 12:30 channel 93 The Daily Show
12:04 - 12:35 channel 26 Inuyasha (set to start 1 minute early)
12:35 - 1:09channel 26 Gundam Seed (set to run 4 minutes late)

the third recording gets recorded incorrectly.

Instead of getting Gundam Seed, I get what was on channel 93 (Everybody Loves
Raymond). Either the channel is not being changed, or the wrong tuner is
being used for the recording.

I have three PVR Freestyle (250) tuners, with tuner 1 connected to analog
cable, and tuner 2 and 3 connected to DCT2000 digital cable boxes. The cable
boxes are controlled by separate lirc ir transmitters.

Occasionally (<< 5% of the time) a cable box will miss a signal from the
transmitters, and I'll get channel 2 or 6 instead of 26. At first this is
what I thought had happened in this circumstance, but it has happened every
Tuesday night since the schedule changed for fall. So there must be another
cause for my problem.

My logs show that the Daily Show and Gundam Seed are both being recorded on
cardid 3, while Inuyasha is being recorded on cardid 2. The logs also show
the the change channel script exited without error for all 3 recordings.

By the way, tuner 1 NEVER seems to be used for recording, but it is the
default for livetv (which I never watch).

I am running Matt's Debian 18.1 packages, the last ones that worked for Debian
Sarge.

If anyone needs more info, I'll gladly provide it.

Re: [mythtv-users] Multiple Video Card Possible?

2005-09-21 Thread Niels Dybdahl
I've been researching MythTV for some time now.   I've just come in to afair amount of money, so I think it's time to finally get off my duff and
build the MythTV box.I have already decided that I'm going to use the Hauppauge PVR-350 for thevideo encoding / decoding (nothing fancy, probably just 640x480 forpersonal use on the TV).However, I'd like to know if it's necessary to have an additional video
card for output.  I've got plenty of plain-jane video cards with TV-out,but if the Hauppauge card is doing my MPEG2 decoding, does the decoder alsohandle the output of the stream to the TV-out port? Also, what is the X Windows support like for the Hauppauge card?  Since I
intend on hooking the MythTV box directly to a TV, can the hauppauge carddrive the TV?
Some have succeeded in running X on the PVR-350. I tried (following
Jarods guide) but it did not work on my system. So I had to add a
videoboard with TV-Out (FX-5200).
The TV-Out of the PVR-350 is said to provide a very good quality, but I am very satisfied with the quality of the FX5200 board.
The performance of the PVR-350 for X and playing MPEG4s is bad (most
say too bad), so if I were going to build a new MythTV, I would go for
a PVR-150/250/500 and a FX-5200 instead.

I have a dedicated mythtv box that is only connected to the TV. Using
it for just mythtv the PVR-350 output is very good. X is configured to
use the PVR-350. You might want to further define the "usual linux
apps.".

However, if you are planning on running other applications not related
to mythtv I think you will find the output to the TV will not be very
good. This was true back when C64s were around. It could be done but
it was better with a dedicated monitor. I don't know if an HDTV would
even make that much difference.

A video card is needed when setting up mythtv. Once you have it all set
you make the changes to use the PVR-350 for X.
