The Lexmark 2050 is classified as a "Paperweight" at Grant Taylor's page

HOWEVER

You are in luck. There is an ACTIVE project on it, and they are looking for
some owners/users to help out.

read their news, then perhaps drop them a line if you feel inspired.

everything seems to spool ok, but nothing ever prints. Not to mention that
during installation, there aren't any selections for Lexmark inkjet

Glad to hear the instructions were of help !!

A BIG word of warning though - consider carefully if the kernel upgrade will
actually give you anything extra that you REALLY need or fix any problems
that you REALLY need fixing. I recently learnt my first painful lesson in
the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' way of thinking.

I upgraded to the 2.2.9-27mdk kernel - simply because i thought it would be
nice to try the latest (that was when it was the latest from Mandrake !!).
All of a sudden my SBLive stopped working. So i went back down to my
previous kernel (and yes i did remember to do all the stuff with LILO), and
it still didn't work. To cut a very long stroy short, i had to do a complete
re-install to get things back to a working state.

As i mentioned in another post yesterday, my kernel upgrade was a pointless
excercise - no extra functionality, simply security fixes. My box is only
ever connected to my laptop - never anything like the net as i don't have a
modem in it. I beleive i don't pose much of a security threat to myself, so
all i did was cause myself a lot of work !!

Just my thoughts.

On the Gnome menu (With the foorprint) choose the "Run" option (it might

If you open up the Gnome menu, you'll see an option called
"KDE Tools" or something like that. Click on that, and then
go to System and click on "desktop switching tool." From
there you can choose KDE. Once you've chosen KDE, log out

[newbie] Just a bit of Professionalism

1999-08-24 Thread Ken Wilson

Soapbox Mode On
I realize many of us are switching to Linux due to what we percieve as
shortcoming of other operating systems, Windows in particular it seems.
Even though we all have our pieves with Microsoft for whatever reason
does it really add any credibility to what we have to say if we can only
refer to the aformentioned company in a slanderous way, i.e. Windoze.

I put this to you, would you be happy campers if someone kept referring
to your favourite distribution of Linux as Manduck?

I am currently working in both worlds, Windows and Linux. I have tried
two flavours of Linux, RedHat 5.2 and now Mandrake 6.0 I have lived
with various operating systems from MS-DOS 3.3, through Windows 3.1 to
Windows 95. If you want a real slug of an operating system try a Radio
Shack Color Computer II running OS9. They all had one thing in common,
they were operating systems for a computer and all had their strong
points and weak points in their given venue.

Whether we like Bill Gates and his strong arm marketing tactics and/or
the fact that some of his programmers couldn't program a toaster with
with both hands and a library of manuals is irrelevant. It was through
his effort and those at IBM that we had the explosion of computers
available for home and business desktops.

I work in both worlds right now because I am in the process of studying
to be a professional in the IT business. I find both sytems provide me
with two ways of looking at a problem. And, the reality is, when I go
out to work as a consultant, programmer or whatever I realize that
market constraints and position will probably dictate that I will have
to be competent with Microsoft and the various flavours of unices.

My apologies to those who understand that you can hang on to your
beliefs without belittling the efforts of the other guy. This wasn't
meant for you.

Manny, I have a card just like yours (Aztech Snd Galaxy 16). I could never
get it to play nice with Linux so I removed it and put it in another PC.
Mine had a jumper to set the card to use the EEPROM settings for the card,
which I assumed was to turn off PnP. I tried this and saw no change. I
probably tried every jumper setting and sndconfig setting combination
possible and it would not work. I put in a used Creative Sound Blaster
16
and in a minute had it working under Mandrake 5.3.

If you ever get it working let me know how as I am sick of playing with
it.
By the way the old Panasonic CD drive I had attached to the card gave up
 the ghost.

When I use sndconfig, it tells me that it does not detect a PnP or PCI card,

On another note, my original CD-ROM drive dies before I ever did my first

I understand this, and I did work with the CoCo III. Fun! However, I
think that a lot of the 'M$' 'Windoze' etc. is mostly blowing off
steam. I would think that most of the people who work in the field,
and, in fact, anyone who has to deal with others with Windows machines
realize that it has some very strong points. The biggest being that
almost anyone can use it. Linux still takes a little work, and that's
one of the reasons I love it.

Windoze isn't going away, but maybe, just maybe, our diparaging of it,
and our refusal to use it unless forced (in many cases) will cause
good ol' Uncle Bill to start hiring real programmers and set realistic
deadlines and put out software that works the FIRST time.

After all, if you think he doesn't watch the competition (via our own
mailing listes etc.) you're nuts.

[newbie] Boot problems w / dual-processor system

1999-08-24 Thread John Aldrich

I don't know if this is a "newbie" question or an "expert"
question, so I'm asking in both... I'm hoping someone here
can give me a suggestion -- I can ONLY boot off my floppy
that I made at install. I am running Mandrake 6.0 (have not
upgraded from what is on the CD yet.) My system hardware is
as follows: Dual-PPro 200 mhz on a Micronics W6-LI
motherboard 192 Megs RAM
S3 Virge GX (Aopen PT75 Plus II) video card w/ 4 megs RAM
Advansys ABP940-UA Ultra SCSI
Hard drives: 1 x 850 meg Conner/Seagate, 1 X 10.5 GIG (only
formatted out to 8.5 GIG for some reason) Seagate
(full-height 5.25") SCSI drive.
USR "Big Picture" Video Phone capture card (PCI)

The problem is as follows: If I take my boot floppy out of
the drive, it just sits there at boot with a blinking
cursor in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
However, if I put the floppy IN the drive, it boots off the
floppy VERY slowly -- I can watch each separate letter of
"LILO" be typed.

This doesn't seem right any suggestions?

Both the C compiler and Perl interpreter are installed by default when

Back up what is already on the partition, split the partition up,
restore the windows stuff back on the partition you set up for it.

Some people swear by Partition Magic, it allegedly can resize your
partitions non-destructively. You may want to look into it. I know a
limited version of it came with either McMillan's or the official
Mandrake distribution.

Caveat: Make sure the version of Partition Magic you use is as current
as you can get. And do the back up before you do any re-partition just
for insurance. I used an earlier version on a 13 gig hard drive and it
choked, something about DOS or the BIOS not being able to handle a drive
over 8 gig or something. To say the least, everything on the drive was
trashed. The backup saved the day.

Partition Magic 4.0 is the easiest way.

I've been using PM since 2.0 when it first arrived in the OS/2 market.
Never let me down.. PM is the greatest utility I've ever bought/owned.

Mandrake now also has a partition tool, I'm sorry, I forget the name..

Re: [newbie] Linux and windows98

1999-08-24 Thread John Aldrich

There are any number of utils to partition a hard drive non-destructively.
The ONLY one I have ever had any experience with is Partition Magic, a
commercial util that comes bundled with Mandrake and (I've heard/read) with
Caldera Open Linux. I've heard of one that is in the /dos_utils directory of
most Linux CDs, unfortunately, I don't know the name and have no experience
using it.
If you're going to BUY a distribution (not necessary, but a LOT faster than
downloading everything you need G) you might as well use the utils that
come with the operating system! :-)

Nope..."modprobe SCSI" I think. I found the EXACT drive for my SCSI card and
just did an "insmod advansys.o" (insmod is the "old" way to do it...the
newer kernels are supposed to use "modprobe.") Which card do you have???
You'll need to insert the "modprobe" line into something like rc.local so
that it'll find it EVERY time... :-)

[newbie] Sweet smell of success real audio G2 part III

1999-08-24 Thread Rick Murphy

A, I've got it working. Real audio sounds great with linux.

I had to download and install Netscape 4.61 and alter the files according to
the instructions on real audio's web site. Now real player works as a plug-in
to netscape. I guess you have to just keep plugging away to eventually figure
it out.

I still have a couple of more projects to go before I'm completely over to
linux but I'm getting there.

Next project is getting my cd-burner working in linux. I'd like to copy the
files I've downloaded for linux 4.61 and real player G2 to a cd. Can anyone
point me in the right direction here.

Thanks,

[newbie] Mandrake 6.0 Install Problems

1999-08-24 Thread Gabriel Fernández

Dear all:

OK, I am starting to dislike this mailing list and Mandrake 6.0. I sent
a question to the list asking for help and what I get back is a flame war.

Could somebody please focus on the issue at hand and provide any type of
helpful information that will assist me in resolving my problem?

The description of the problem is below.

   Thanks,

Gabriel

I am a Slackware user, but I have heard so many good things about Read
Hat that I decided to give it a try. So far it has not been a positive
experience . . .

My machine is configured as follows:

Pentium 75MHz
64MB RAM
ide0 @ 0x1f0-0x1f7, 0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 @ 0x170-0x177, 0x376 on irq 15 (serialized with ide0)
hda: Conner Peripherals 1275MB - CFA1275A,
 1220MB w/256KB Cahce, CHS=619/64/63
hdb: Maxtor 72004 AP,
 1916MB w/128KB Cache, CHS=973/64/63
hdc: ATAPI 24X CD-ROM DVD-RAM CD-R/RW drive, 2048KB Cache
Partition check:
hda: hda1, hda2, hda3
hdb: hdb1, hdb2

I have Windows 95 and Slackware Linux currently installed. The first
hard drive has a partition for Windows 95 and two partitions
for Linux (/swap and /). The second hard drive has one partition for
Windows 95 (mounted under Linux) and a partition for Linux (/usr). Both
drives are under the IDE0 controller.

   Under the IDE1 controller, I have a CD-R/RW drive.

Everything works fine with Windows 95 and the version of Slakware that I
have installed.

When I tried installing Mandrake 6.0, I was under the impression that
the installation would take care of deleting or repartition the
hard drives. However, this is not the case.

After the installation type is selected and the kernel is loaded. I see
a message "Running install..." and everything hangs.

When I check with ALT-F4, I can see the following error messages:

VFS: mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
hdb: lost interrupt
hdb: drive_cmd: status=0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
 status error: status 0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
hdb: drive not ready for command
VFS: Disk change detected on device ide1 (22,0)
hdc: drive_cmd: error=0x04
hdc: lost interrupt:
hdc: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason=0x1)
hdc: lost interrupt:
hdc: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason=0x1)
...

I do not understand why the hard drives are used and mounted correctly
with Windows 95 and Slackware, but with Mandrake 6.0 they are not
recognized.

   Do you have any ideas?

   Thanks,

Gabriel

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 6.0 Install Problems

1999-08-24 Thread Gabriel Fernández

Hi there:

Sorry, I'm a busy person I'm sure you can understand.

Nothing personal. Just frustrated that my message started a list of
messages not related to my question. ;-)

I appreciate all the help that I can get.

VFS: mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
hdb: lost interrupt
hdb: drive_cmd: status=0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
 status error: status 0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
hdb: drive not ready for command
VFS: Disk change detected on device ide1 (22,0)

hdc: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason=0x1)
hdc: lost interrupt:
hdc: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason=0x1)
...

There's some bad logic in the code that desides which drives to enable DMA
cdroms are less tolerant than hardrives when you try and activate it and
they do not support it.

I am confused by this statement. I think I understand the kernel does
not support the particular CD-ROM that I have and that's the reason for the
errors. However, below is the output from the kernel indicating that the
CD-ROM drive was recognized. It does not say the brand, but the description
is right on the money (HP CD-Writer Plus 8200i, 4X/4X/24X).

Pentium 75MHz
64MB RAM
ide0 @ 0x1f0-0x1f7, 0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 @ 0x170-0x177, 0x376 on irq 15 (serialized with ide0)
hda: Conner Peripherals 1275MB - CFA1275A,
 1220MB w/256KB Cahce, CHS=619/64/63
hdb: Maxtor 72004 AP,
 1916MB w/128KB Cache, CHS=973/64/63
hdc: ATAPI 24X CD-ROM DVD-RAM CD-R/RW drive, 2048KB Cache
Partition check:
hda: hda1, hda2, hda3
hdb: hdb1, hdb2

   These are your suggestions:

A: Swap the cdrom out for something "with less additude"

I do not have another CD-ROM. I actually want to use my CD-R/RW drive
under Linux. Also, I do not know what you mean by "less additude".

B: Find HD space and install it from there

If I keep the CD-R/RW unit installed, this won't make any difference. I
won't be able to finish the boot up.

C: Try it with a recent mirror of Cooker

I have no idea what this means. Could you please elaborate?

D: Ask me for custom boot disks and i'll see if i can find time

Please consider the request made. Could you be so kind to provide me
with a boot disk/image that I can use to install the software?

BTW, I just learned that there were several Mandrake "releases". I am
using the one provided by MacMillan (The Complete Linux OS 6.0).

   Thanks,

Gabriel

is due to my fault in not reading the instructions properly and not
following the prompts properly. Now I must learn how to recover back
  my Windows partition.

Better luck to you with the new distribution.

[newbie] Network Card Support

1999-08-24 Thread Kyle \Orange\ Spahn

I found out the hard way that my network card is not supported with Linux
Mandrake. I have a D-Link DE-220 PCT, has anyone seen support for this? I'm
unable to download Mandrake because I have a cable modem and it relies on
the network card. Help would be appreciated! Thanks!

RE: [newbie] Good AGP card

1999-08-24 Thread Aaron deRozario

How many of G400 Max features are supported by the Xfree86 drivers? I know
they have been talking about multi-headed support for dual monitors/cards
for their next release, but do the current drivers support dual monitors?

Does anyone know if either the current or future Xfree86 drivers for the
G400 will allow dual monitor support so that I can view desktop 1 on monitor
A and desktop 2 on monitor B?

Likewise does anyone know how long before it will be possible to have 2
monitors, 2 keyboards and 2 mouse set up on a single Linux machine, allowing
either 2 users to use the machine, or to allow 1 user to have simultaneous
control over 2 desktops?

There are applications and uses of a computer that would benefit from both
kinds of setup.

Just wondering

Aaron

Check out the Matrox Millenium G400 Max, it's now supported, renders in 32
bits and has TV out, dual monitor support.

I am looking for a good AGP card to replace my aging Viper V330. (Plus i
 need
room for an ethernet card:) I have about $180 to spend, and no more. I
 would
like something that can render in 32bits (ie. not a Voodoo3). I was
 looking
at a Diamond Stealth III S540 w/ the new Savage 4 chip. Any comments
 would
 be
  great.

  Thanks,

[newbie] eql

1999-08-24 Thread DJ

Hello

Is anyone using or have used eql or mlppp with 6 or more modems? I need
to connect a remote site to the lan and we cant get anything faster than
33.6 lines:(
So im going to try a cyclades card with 6 or 8 33.6 modems and use
eql. I'm just looking to chat with anyone who has used a setup like this
in the past, to see what the pitfalls are:)

Thanks DJ
