Try www.OpenDVD.org but to be perfectly honest, DVD is not really
supported, but you can "make" it work, ain't linux cool. :D

Re: Netscape problem was Re: [newbie] system freezes after 1 - 2 days

2000-01-20 Thread jfcessor

OKKK wooh it is fixed here is what I did.
I had already tried to run it from the command line using
/usr/bin/netscape I recieved You dont appear to have netscape
installed. So I then used your suggestion rpm -qa | grep netscape* to
see what was installed... the only one installed was
netscape-common-407-1 so I ftp'd to a ftp site and grabbed the other
netscape stuff and then upgraded what I had and poof it is fixed.
Now if anyone has an idea on how I can get this darn thing to let me use
kvwdial as a normal user instead of root so I can use netscape I would
greatly appreciate it. I can dial out using kppp and connect but I cant
use netscape or anything, it doesnt recognize I am connected I guess. If
I try to dial out with kvwdial as a normal user I connect then it says
something about ppd starting then it disconnects but the kvwdial window
says it is connected but the lights on my external usrobotics 56k says
otherwise. Any help will appreciated.

Try finding it on the hard drive. As root from an xterm (i.e. su to
 root) type

 find / -name netscape

and see if you can find it. It is probably in something like /usr/bin
or /opt/netscape. If you find it, try running it with that path. If that
works, then update the icon "execute" path (right click the icon and
choose properties). If it does not run, then you should at least get
an error message. Might not run if you updated with a version
 compiled with the wrong libraries.

You can also tell which RPM(s) you installed with

 rpm -qa | grep netscape*

[newbie] Beowulf Use.

2000-01-20 Thread Benjamin Branch

I've been reading the Beowulf HOWTO and i have been trying to find a way to
impliment this into an ISP/ASP Infrastructure. I was thinking of using this
time of "supercomputer" as a WEB/MAIL Server. Can any tell me if this would
be effective in this type of environment or if it would be uneffective. The
reason for this is due to the fact that our customer base is growing at
somewhat of a rapid pace and we have a little of 5000 users hitting our mail
server so it does take some strain, also we have a large amount of web
hosting as well and we probably have a little of 600 domains on our systems
right now and only 3 web servers. I guess the so called "IDEA" here is to
see if it is also cost effective to do this buy having say 5 computers in a
Beowulf cluster running Web services with Mail services as well.

Please send me as much info as possible on this because my employers think
that this could be a great solution for our network.

Thanks,

[newbie] FAT partition problem with Staroffice

2000-01-20 Thread Younes Zouhair

Hello,

I had a strange problem with Staroffice, it can't read my FAT partitions, even
when there rightly mounted and can explore them with xterm.

I found a solution : it's to mount the FAt partitions in a directory of which
the name don't have a CAPITAL letter(s) (what did Mandrake 6.1 /mnt/DOS_hdxx)

I mount them to /mnt/dos_hdxx and it works fine (eventually edit the /etc/fstab)

May this help someone !

According to the theory of relativity, at the speed of light, mass and

 Hi!
I had the same problem. It is propably in your display adapter (it is not
 broken, but old).
I have "old" S3 Trio64V+ and it has support for VESA 1.2 (NOT vesa local
 bus,
 but more like video standard).
I think there were something about requirements:
 Vesa 2.0 compatible video adapter

 Solution:
make a boot image: (instruction in images/readme)
 txt_boot.img
 or
 txt_bootnet.img (this looks txt_boot.000 in ms-dos)

first shoud be image for text install from local HD or CD-ROM, second from
 net.
They might be mixed (txt_boot.img for net and txt_bootnet.img for HD or
CD)

Then you can install (Man)Drake from floppy and it is text based install
(as
 it was before)

 Hi all,
I have just installed Mandrake 7.0 on my Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop. It
installs fine all the way to the end. Even when it prompts to probe the
video card and xwindows everything goes well and I see a desktop. Now the
problem that I have is that when I'm done with the installation and type
startx to start xwindows I get a black screen and my laptop hangs up. The
video card I have is ATI Mobility-P 3D. Can someone please help me?
 Yusuf.

You should choice chipset (video card) as you have while installing, if
there no match you can choice nearly chipset (eg. ATI compatiable MACH 64).
If there no match too, you may browser :
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO.html to see what hardware
support.or contact to your vendor.

Try it ! :-)

I am out of ideas now. The weird thing is that I was working fine with PBM and

From what I've read,
/usr/local is generally used for programs that are local to your machine and the
permissions are read and write while /usr/share are for programs that are
accessable through the network and permissions are read-only , someone can
correct me on this if they'd like. In reality I use /usr/local for programs
that were installed without benefit of using a package (i.e. RPM). The
exception would be as you say a network install of a network aware application.

If all else fails use this command, it might take a while depending

[newbie] kdelibs - apps won't load

2000-01-20 Thread Archie Maskill

I've just broken KDE on my Mandrake system. :(
I don't think it's anything major though.

I downloaded the kdelibs sources package from:

ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/updates/6.0/SRPMS/kdelibs-1.1.2-9.src.rpm

and ran the RPM kpackage thing. Untarring and compiling the files it
created, I discovered that clicking application icons on the panel didn't
load them. Selecting them in the Application Starter menu doesn't work
either. In fact, the only way I can load anything, is if I happen to have
installed it as a link on the desktop background and by clicking on that.

Could someone help me before I'm tempted to do break it even more?

Cheers,
Archie.

[newbie] Installation blues :)

2000-01-20 Thread Mike Lee

Howdy folks,

I have a distinct feeling that Linux, of any flavor, does not like me...:)

I have Mandrake 6.5 that I am trying to install. I have tried to install it
about six times so far, and each time I have run into the same error. So,
I've finally decided to ask for help :)

First, a little background...

The machine is a Gateway 2000, Pentium 3 500, 128 ram, 2 hard drives [ide]
[20 gig main drive] [13 gig secondary drive]
I am trying to install to the second hard drive [13 gig] that I have
installed into the machine..
I don't know whether the drive I am installing to is a slave drive or not,
I will illustrate how I have it installed below so mayhaps you guys can
tell (a b are the drives):
[motherboard]---[a]-[b]

The drive I am installing to is the [a] drive in the illustration above.
But, when I am installing linux, I have the [b] drive's power supply cord
unplugged. I have to do this or my computer will not recognise the [a]
drive. I do still have the strip connected to both drives and the
motherboard.

So, I fire up the installation off the boot disk, It gets through every
check fine. Now here's another part that I think may have something to do
with it, but I am not wholly sure.

When it gets to the part of the installation where you select whether you
want a server, workstation or a custom setup I tried following the manual
the first time and selected a custom setup, selecting and deselecting
various packages. This didn't work, the next few times I tried to install I
left everything at default and it still hit a brick wall. Ok, this doesn't
seem to be working, I thought to myself, so I'll try the server and
workstation installations...no dice, same problem

It was at this point that I decided to write down the error..and hope like
heck someone here can help me. So, for your dissection, I present the error
I got.

The error that I get comes up after about a half hour of the machine
installing packages.

Here is the process the error pops up during: making ext2 filesystem on
/dev/hda5/

Install exited abnormally -- received signal 11
Sending termination signals - done
Sending kill signals... done
Unmounting filesystems /tmp/rhimage/
/proc
you may safely reboot your system now

PART PROBLEM
I have gotten the modem to work with kppp, it will dial out but nothing
realizes it is connected to the internet, with kvwdial I can dial out
and everything realizes it is connected to the internet but kvwdial only
works while I am in root mode. I would like to be able to browse the
internet as a normal user and not use root for it.

PART TWO PROBLEM
I followed some advise I was given about a probable fix for my problem
and I went to the update site and updated netscape, now I cant launch
netscape at all, when I go to the command line and type
/usr/bin/netscape it says I dont have netscape installed.
Any help would be appreciated. I am at a loss as to what to do next.. I
had to boot into windows to even write this message.

Sorry about the html. I just started using Outlook a couple of weeks ago
and had not even checked that!

Anyway, I decided to take the BJC6000 back and will probably get an HPDJ

change like the entry for the BJC did!

Thanks for the help and I will let everyone know how it comes out. I
suppose this is one way to learn Linux!

Re: [newbie] install 7.0 problems

I recommend Easy CD Creator. Lookup "iso" in the Easy CD Creator help file.
It should tell you exactly what to do.

Adaptec's website is very extensive. Use it if you need it. (Adaptec is
the maker of Easy CD Creator)

I had downloaded the directories /Mandrake and /images and /dosutils
and created a boot disk. Everything SEEMED fine and it started the
installation (graphical, very nice...) :-)

At about the sixth or seventh point it told me that it couldn`t install all
packages. It continued though. Then, there was another error message, but
still continued. However, I ended up that there was STILL Mandrake 6.1 and
not 7.0 installed.

I *guess* that the problem is that I downloaded the directories with
Go!Zilla and it did NOT create any symlinks. Could that be?

I am now about to download the iso file but this will take me another
day... or so.. :-)

which program is best to burn? Easy CD Creator or Nero Burning?

I just can download the iso file and burn it on cd, right?! That´s it...
ok.

thanks,

marc

stuck with windows again until I get an idea what is wrong.

RE: [newbie] Install problem

2000-01-20 Thread Family ZOMBIE

Solution:
make a boot image: (instruction in images/readme)
txt_boot.img
or
txt_bootnet.img (this looks txt_boot.000 in ms-dos)

first shoud be image for text install from local HD or CD-ROM, second from
net.
They might be mixed (txt_boot.img for net and txt_bootnet.img for HD or CD)

Then you can install (Man)Drake from floppy and it is text based install (as
it was before)

I´m trying to install Mandrake 7 from a cdrom ( burned from an ISO image).
When the installation reaches the second stage I get an error. The error
reads "_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can´t connnect: errno = 111"

What is errno 111 and what should I do?

I´ve tried to install from CD-Rom using the text install and the
installation whent fine but booting the newly installed Mandrake hangs at
the line reading something like "starting system logger" or something. I´ve
have used RedHat 5.2, 6.0 and 6.1 on the same machine earlier with no
problem but I´m new to Mandrake.

Help needed

What are you trying to accomplish with the cable modem? Do you simply want a

I don't know if you want to try this.

What I ended up doing to get my Gateway Solo 2300 working was to set it as a
Generic Multiscan monitor, set the appropriate resolutions and away it went.
No matter how much I tried I could not get it to work properly using the
Laptop monitor option.

The end result was X in 800x600 with 16 bit colour.
