AW: [newbie] USB support?

2000-03-23 Thread Drazenko Djuricic

According to the manual, not really.
USB support in general is still not that good
in x86 Linux variants as it is in Windoze.
But they are working on it, so chances are great
that newer kernel versions will offer better
USB support.

There is a HOWTO for this.

2000-03-23 Thread Mike Perry

Yello Folks!

I am trying to setup printing from 2 Mandrake 7.0 machines
to my Windows95OSR2 Server which has a HP695C attached..
This previously worked fine with Mandrake 6.1.
On both Mandrake Machines when I set them up they print
once and once only (the test print).
Afterwards when I try and print again nothing gets sent through
my network to the Windows Box.
I managed to get one of them to print again by deleting the
/var/spool/lpr/lp directory, and then re-installing the printer again
but once again it printed once and once only.
Networking is setup fine I believe, I can surf, ftp, and access files
on my Server from the Linux Boxes.

AW: AW: [newbie] USB support?

2000-03-23 Thread Drazenko Djuricic

Well, you might want to try using another Distro.
I personally and from a professional point of view
like SuSE Linux very much. At work we use their
distros on several machines (Mail, DNS, etc.).
The advantage of SuSE (current release: SuSE Linux 6.3,
SuSE Linux 6.4 is to be released real soon) is that
they pack an incredible lot of software on their CD's
and they usually also always include the newest
stable and "hacker" kernels. So if you really HAVE TO
use your ISDN adapter via USB, you should give SuSE a try.
Chances are big, that if there was any advancement in
USB support SuSE has included the appropriate kernel
onto their CD's, so all you needed to do is to recompile
the kernel and have USB support included.
But be warned, though: SuSE is great if you know what
you are doing, but Newbies will find it rather
unfriendly or hard to understand, IMO. From a Newbie POV
Mandrake is far better suited.

RE: [newbie] Install

2000-03-23 Thread Pittman, Merle

If you think you install linux on Win98 you are in for a little learning
curve :)

First you have to make a new partition on your drive (or another drive if
you have it). If you don't want to lose your win98 stuff, resize your
current partition with partition magic or something of the sort. The
install linux to that new partition.

You can install linux on an existing win98 partition, but I wouldn't
recommend it if you want to see the real power of linux.

I would recommend doing some heavy reading for couple days, pick up a book,
or go to www.linux.org and read the HOW-TO's or something.

have fun

[newbie] Installation problems on laptop

2000-03-23 Thread James Riches

Hi. I’m having some problems installing Mandrake Linux 7.0 on my Texas
Instruments laptop and I’d appreciate some help. I realise that laptops can be
very problematic, but it’s all I have at the moment, so I would like to
install linux on it if possible. I’ll explain the history of my problems a bit
so that noone wastes their time writing answers that I already know. However,
my main questions involve being able to run the autoboot (from DOS) in text
mode, and also the files necessary for an installation from the hard drive (in
a DOS partition).

My laptop can only have the CD _or_ the floppy drive in at the one time, not
both. And as my CDROM is not bootable, I thought that the 2nd installation
option (running autoboot from DOS) would be best. At first I had problems with
it hanging, but that was resolved with the new autoboot file from the Mandrake
website. However, a later problem with an error number 111 (errno=111) cropped
up and I was told that it was a problem recognising my monitor or video card.
I was also told that it could be avoided by running the installation in text
mode. I couldn’t see how to do that with the autoboot file, so I moved onto
the next installation mode.

Next problem was the text mode installation. I copied the boot_txt.img file
onto a floppy (with rawrite) and the installation went swimmingly until it
asked me to insert the CDROM, or where it was, or something similar. Now, I
can’t boot from a floppy and then change the floppy and the CDROM over, so I
can’t see how I can proceed that way.

I thought about an installation from the hard drive, but I don’t have that
much space, and I wouldn’t be able to copy all of the files from the CD to the
hard drive. If there were only about 100MB of files to copy and I knew which
ones they were, then it would be OK, but at the moment it doesn’t seem to be
an option.

So, eventually, we come to my questions.
1. Does anyone know a way to get autoboot to run in text mode? That would, I
believe, solve all of my problems.

2. What are the minimum files that must be loaded onto the hard drive for this
installation, and how do you get this method to run in text mode? (with the
boot_txt.img that I made, it seemed to assume that it was to be a loading from
CDROM)

3. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I’d prefer not to have to use
another distribution, like Debian, if possible, as I have the Mandrake disk
here.

So, if anyone can help me with my problem, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks in
advance.

Jamie

2000-03-23 Thread nodyak0

If I may add to that, when you use the Lnx4Win to install on any Windows
system you are not installing on a partitioned area. It is piggy backed
on the Windows and if you have a crash on Windows and have to
reinstallguess what? Right, Linux will need to be reinstalled as
well. Plus that install is very sss in responding to what
you want to do. I did about 9 installs on my Win98 system using the
PQPTMagic (Power Quest) and I cannot say enough GOOD things for that
software. It performed Excelently and the best and easiest to work with
is "lilo" (LInux LOader). Have fun...

[newbie] Modem almost connects -- SOLUTION!!!

2000-03-23 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Below is a solution to a problem that can drive newbies up the wall and
straight into a mental asylum. It is completely unnecessary and, in my
opinion, should be automatically included into Mandrake's routines.

I use the U. S. Robotics 56k external modem, which, according to our
resident gurus, is probably the best modem to use with Linux (at any
rate, it must be an external modem. Internal modems cause too many IRQ
problems).

Using kppp or any dialer, you dial in, the modem rings, you go through
the normal logging routines, and just as you are about to connect, the
modem pulls back and STARTS DIALING AGAIN. OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

The solution, apparently, has nothing to do with the connection speed.
If your modem "connects" to
the Internet and then, at the last second, disconnects and RESTARTS the
process ad infinitum, the problem is one of authentification. The
solution has to be one of the simplest in the whole of Linux.

I learned this from a kind list member. I am just passing it on.
Make sure you etch it on your forehead in case you
need to restore your system or you will not remember the solution.

Here it is:

[sher@adsl-77-233-178 sher]$ cd /etc/ppp
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 ppp]$ ls
chap-secrets ioptions ip-down* ip-up* options pap-secrets peers/
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 ppp]$ cat options |more
lock
noauth
[sher@adsl-77-233-178 ppp]$

1) Open any text editor and go to /etc/ppp, then open the file called
"options". You will probably see the one word "lock" (as above) without
the quotes, of course. Now just add the one word "noauth", which means
"no authorization". This tells pppd (or kppp) NOT to look for any
further authentification. And suddenly, you are on the Net.

2) If you get a "lock" message when trying to connect, be sure to go to
/var/lock and just delete the "LCK..ttyS1" file.

Print this out and save it in a safe place in case you forget.

Nutscrape it came back with an error that it couldn't find the print
spool lp . Once I went back into DrakConf and REsetup the same printer
but did not change the default name all was fine. I'm sure that there is
a setting in Nutscrape I could have easily changed but that did it for
 me.

Hi Joseph!

I used the Hp DeskJet 550C/560C/6xxC driver.
I also found out what the problem is.
Apparently there may be a bug in lpr rpms following the one in mandrake
6.1.
Every subsequent release seems to have a bug when it comes to printing
through a Winblows box.
I just uninstalled lpr rpm and dependent rpm's and deleted the
/var/spool/lpd/lp directory.
Then I installed the lpr rpm from Mandrake 6.1 and associated
dependencies and then re-installed the abovementioned printer driver.
Now everything works perfectly :-)
I hope the bug patrol are paying attention to this problem, but all in
all the Mandrake 7.0 seems to be quiet an improvement on 6.1
I will have all weekend to play around with it, both on my Sons
Computer, and on mine, so youall be ready for a few questions etc come
Monday eh!

All the best:

Mike.

[newbie] Starting X Stuff

2000-03-23 Thread Lane Lester

I'm using "plan" for scheduling appointments, and it has a daemon that
will report alarms even when the main program is not running. The
directions say to put the daemon command in ~/.xsession, but that
doesn't seem to work. Is there some other file that would be
appropriate for starting this thing up every time I start X?

I got this from Denis.
Give this a try:

1) in /etc/inittab set initail runlevel to 3 and reboot
2) in /etc/X11/XF86Config, search for "Device" section, and
add "Option sw_cursor" (see "man XF86_SVGA" for details)
3) test by typing "startx"
4) if/when happy set initial runlevel back to 5

If it works for you, you should thanks DENIS.

find web site gives me something about SOCKS compatbility essentially..
it says it didn't find an internet connection... is it the fact that it does not
say "LOGIN" anymore on the log, liek it would when it use to say "PPP DAEMON

I decided to call my ISP (earthlink) and they said
"WE DON'T DEAL W/ LINUX SETUP" We Only Can setup Windows + Macintosh. he
said he could only tell me what info I needed, ie - the DNS numbers, etc (which,
speaking of the DNS numbers, are they required?)

x86 refers to the intel platform (i386, i486, i586, etc.). If you're able
to run Windows on it, that's you. As far as Star Office install, unzip

x86 is a type of processor, specifically Intel-compatible (also include AMD).
You have one, so don't worry about it.

Yes, you can download it. It comes in a .tar.gz file if I remember correctly.
Then type "tar -xvzf the_tarred_file.tar.gz" and it'll create a new directory
for you. Go into that new directory, and "su" to root. Then type "./setup" and
a really cool GUI screen will come up to walk you through the rest of the
installation. It's really quite impressive, almost as if you are installing a
Windows program. After you get done installing it, you can run it by typing
"/the_direcories_you_installed_it_in/bin/soffice"

seeing if something comes up. If you do have it, scrolling for the most part

Also make sure that you don't have "Emulate three buttons" on. To
see if you do, as root type "setup" and select the mouse configuation utility.
Then make sure the checkbox that says "Emulate 3 buttons" is unchecked.

Any further information, and imwheel (should you not have it on your system)

Re: [newbie] OK, KPPP connect, but Now What?

2000-03-23 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Julien:

Yes, you absolutely must get the DNS numbers: Primary and Secondary.
First type the first number, then click on Add, then the second number
and click on Add. You'll see both numbers in the box below. then check
on "Disable all other DNS servers" at the bottom of the screen.

I am just an ordinary user, but if you have actually connected and have
downloaded anything (250 bytes), then it seems that you do have a
winsock.dll incompatibility. The tiny winsock.dll file is the gateway to
the Internet, and if there is any incompatibility you won't get online
until this is resolved.

But this is as far as my "expertise" goes. Hope someone else can take
over from there.

Since the rap against it would seem to be "annoyances" as opposed to
functionality, I guess it becomes a question of whether one wishes to part
with US$99-$199 to rid oneself of the annoyances. SO 5.x does typically take
an awful long time to launch even on a PIII 450 w/192M of RAM. It reminds me
in a way of M$ Works in that it's not just a suite of separate apps, but a
gigantic app w/numerous "parts". Despite its admitted annoyances (like
"bloat"), I'd have to say I rather like SO 5.x, though I enjoy using the beta
of Applixware 5.0 also. I guess I should try WordPerfect 2000 Suite when it's
 fully released ;o)

Oops! I hope nobody was annoyed at my comment. If you're on a limited budget, Star
Office
does just fine. For that matter, abisuite (which comes with the Mandrake 7 distrib)
seems to
be pretty decent, and if you want to pop over to www.linuxberg.com, you can find all
the apps
you can think of - organized into neat sections. There have been several instances
where
I've spent a lot of money on something and then gone and downloaded some free or
shareware
product that does the same thing, often better than the product I paid for. However,
there
are also times when the old saying holds true; "you get what you pay for"

If you need to share files with other people, or even just email an attachment written
with
your word processor that others will be reading, saving to some foreign file format or
even
'rich text format' will render your hard worked on document either incorrectly
formatted when
it's opened, or completely unreadable.

[newbie] Problems with PPP Setup.

2000-03-23 Thread Patrick Dyer

I am using Mandrake 6 and trying to setup ppp to
dial-up my ISP. I tried using the Kppp client, netcfg
and the script method but none of then worked. I do
not know what I am doing wrong. When I use Kppp and
try to connect I get the message "modem is busy".With
netcfg it just does not work and with the script
method I get a message something like "cannot find
parameters","execution of script failed". So I need
someone to outline for me exactly what to do when
setting up ppp.
   Thanks Much

According to the manual, not really.
USB support in general is still not that good
in x86 Linux variants as it is in Windoze.
But they are working on it, so chances are great
that newer kernel versions will offer better
 USB support.

Well, does not really mean not at all? Or, sometimes...

You can use a program called 'imwheel' to use the scroll but I think it's

[newbie] Mandrake 7.0 unable to install ethernet card

2000-03-23 Thread Ivan Stout

Has anyone been able to install Mandrake 7.0 and
have it recongize their ethernet card!? I've installed
on two completely different systems with only the
ethernet card failing to be installed on both.
However, the Drakeconfig software was able to
recognize all the hardware.
I have yet to meet someone who has been able to
install their ethernet card using Mandrake 7.0. I've
also been unable to run kernel reconfiguring software
like "make config", "make menuconfig", or "make
xconfig."

Yes, you can download it. It comes in a .tar.gz file if I remember
