RE: [newbie] Which Windows mail client is best for compatibility?

2000-07-11 Thread Viboon Chaojirapant

Hi,

I am looking to use email clients with compatible email
file format. The reason is that many a times, people I
know would write personal emails to me using my office
account. And since I have a habbit of keeping personal
emails (instead of deleting them), I want to be able
to put them (for example) in one Outlook .pst file and
bring them home to archive.

The problem with this is that it seems to me Outlook's
file format is pretty incompatible with NetscapeMail. :(

I have looked at Mahogany, but the Win32 version is,
IMHO, quite unpolished.

Cheers,
Viboon

are you looking for a compatible email file format so you can us one
mailbox at work and home or are you just looking for a pop3 client to
read email from at work? Mahogany is a cross platform mailer that is
in development. Check it out here : http://www.wxwindows.org/Mahogany/
I personally don't use Linux as a desktop OS (servers only). I use

[newbie] Second window partition no longer available bug

2000-07-11 Thread Jeff Malka

I am planning to install Mandrake 7.1 on my PC on my second 8 GB HD.

My second HD only contains one 8 GB DOS extended partition which already
contains several logical DOS partitions. Using Partition Magic I have moved
them all to the beginning of the extended partition leaving enough room for
Linux at the end of the partition.

I am worried because of the messages I have seen and the reported install
bug listed in http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/heliumlast.php3 as "Second
window partition no longer available". I do not quite understand if this
will apply to my setup described above (that is that I will not be able to
access my FAT logical partitions in that extended partitions) or if I am
safe.

Could someone tell me? Someone else said they tried the "script" and it did
not work for them.

Re: [newbie] Seeking Tutorial on compiling Kernel

2000-07-11 Thread Mark Weaver

I know what you mean. The real fun part is when something goes wrong and
you have to figure out what it is and how to fix it. I've done that
serveral times. One time I had the kernel about where you're descibing and
I was going after that last 1%. Well, :) , When I rebooted after
"thinking" I had gotten that last bit I got a kernel panic and things went
south real fast from there. It took me about two hours to get it un-hosed
from there, but I got it. That's when I learned about how you can over-lay
an installation of Linux over top of the older one. As long as they're the
same version "usually" only the system files get over-written. It worked
quite nicely for me and saved my bacon!

I'm much more careful these days when I do anything with the kernel. I
make sure I back things up like the old kernel and it's support files and
what-nots. That makes installing the "old" kernel much less painless if
the need arises.

First thing. If you are planning to install Linux Within the DOS extended
partition: It won't work You need to use PM to resize your extended
partition leaving an area of free space to which you will install Linux.
I, myself, was not aware of the installation bug until yesterday. The
problem occurs only if you install in Automatic Mode. You should be
perfectly safe if you install in Expert Mode.

[newbie] Installing GRUB

2000-07-11 Thread Joe Brault

Hello all,

I have recently installed Linux-Mandrake 7.0 on my system, making it a
dual boot system. I have a 7gb partition for Linux and the rest of my 15gb
partitoin is used for winbloz. When I installed Linux, I used Partition
Magic to partition my drive, and I then installed Boot Magic to use as my
boot loader instead of Linux. When I set up Boot Magic, It was unable to
see my Linux partiton, but I left it alone and continued to install Linux.
When I got Linux installed and got to the screen about loading LILO, I was
told that my boot record was not fully below the 1024 cylinder level so LILO
would be unable to load. Now with the install complete, the only way I can
boot into Linux is with my boot disk.

My question is, can I install GRUB (the next version of LILO) to remedy
my problem? If I can, how would I go about installing it? Can I download
it without downloading all of Linux-Mandrake 7.1? I really appreciate any
help anyone can give. thanks in advance!

The problem is that imwheel writes a file /tmp/imwheel.pid where it keeps

of leaving its pid file around and it sets the user and group to the user
creating it and permissions to rw for only the user creating it. So it
sounds like you have an imwheel.pid file in /tmp that only root and read and

You have a couple of options. Note this is all theory as I only run with
one user id and "su root" when I need to so I haven't had your problem.

so every time u login with your user id and need imwheel u su and start it
manually ?

That said, you can "chmod a+rw /tmp/imwheel.pid" and hope imwheel doesn't
manage to delete it or your system cleanup doesn't delete it. Or you can
try using "imwheel -p" to forego writing the pid file. Then you takes your
chances that you don't end up running two copies of imwheel and making
things act goofy. This might happen if you put it in your autostart folder.
A recent post about putting the imwheel command in the Xsession script might
be a better idea for this option. Lastly, you could write a script that
starts imwheel and does the "chmod a+rw /tmp/imwheel.pid" in case it is
freshly created and put that in your autostart folder.

2000-07-11 Thread Paul

The date was 10 of July 2000, when was written:

I have been having problems trying to connect to the Internet through
Mandrake 7.1.
Mandrake recognizes my NIC card and when it boots up eth0 is in the list
and everything is ok. I must be doing something wrong in the network
config files. I have used netcfg to edit it, but still nothing. Every
time I try to connect or ping a site, all I get is host unknown.

Is there a standard of IP addresses to use? I have used 192.168.1.1 and

I have lost track, and don't remember if this has been addressed yet.
192.168.x.x is an IP range for home-use. It is not accessed from the Net.
If you are connecting to your ISP through the NIC, you will need to figure
out if they use dynamic IP addressing (you get a new IP address each time
you log in), or what fixed IP address you are assigned (you can find that
through Windows95/98: run winipcfg when you're connected).

I can't say more since I don't have this kind of setup, but perhaps this
helps a bit.

Give 'info grub' a quick read so you can review your 'menu.lst'

cd into .../grub and run 'sh install.sh'. I have no idea how
that's gonna work with Boot Magic tho.

Are you sure? I ask because I presently have TurboLinux which I installed

 Jeff
First thing. If you are planning to install Linux Within the DOS
extended
partition: It won't work You need to use PM to resize your extended
partition leaving an area of free space to which you will install Linux.
I, myself, was not aware of the installation bug until yesterday. The
problem occurs only if you install in Automatic Mode. You should be
perfectly safe if you install in Expert Mode.

Re: [newbie] mouse driver and CD-ROM problems

2000-07-11 Thread Romanator

Hi Roman,

Wow. It looks like a nice mouse...Try replacing the Generic Mouse PS/2
with a Generic Serial Mouse first.
If that does not work, replace it with the MS Intellimouse serial.
Have you checked to see if it is a serial mouse or USB? MDK7.1 has
addressed several USB issues

I have a fairly good book on Upgrading and Repairing PCs - Linux
Version. I will access as much information as possible to get your mouse
working. Next we will work on the CDROM and floppy.

Could you provide me with some extra information:

1. How do you have your hard drive drive configured?
2. Are you using more that one drive?
3. Which is the first master and which is the slave?
4. If you have two drives are they connected to two different bus lines?
5. Is you CDROM daisy chained?

If I can envision the setup in my mind, it would make it easier to find
isolate the culprit.

I may reinstall MDK7.0 to see my previous installation.
By the way, when you get any message, error message i.e. selecting the
CDROM, can you please write down the exact message.

This would be a great idea to consider ICUII video for Linux. This way,
I could see the inside of you computer.

I will be speaking with you soon.

Roman

Don't have such a thing (MouseDrake), at least I don't think so.

When you pressed Cntrl+Alt+Backspace, were you able to see your mouse
  pointer?

I see my mouse pointer, it even behaves normally most of the time. But
sometimes the pointer starts jumping around the screen and clicking
randomly. That happens for about half a second, but can get me upset
if it happens to click in a way that it closes two windows and presses
"ok" in another one. I've had the same problem in Windows with my old
mouse and there it helped to switch from 3-button mode to 2-button
mode. This is unfortunately impossible with this new mouse, because
there is no switch for it. Therefore I would like to select another
driver. Maybe MS intellimouse or try something else or every driver,
just not use the one I am using now (Generic Mouse PS/2).

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the "WinMouse 4D+" a.k.a.
  "WWW-11".

You can get a picture here http://www.a4tech.com/4dplus.html . It is
 the first mouse, named "www-11".
 If it helps ;-)

  I have some more questions:
You mentioned that you have no re-login, login as another user, login as
  root, login in console
  mode, login to KDE?

No... you asked me if it still happens after relogin. And I named all
those things which *don't* help. It does not help to relogin, to login
as root etc. - neither of them solves my mouse problem.

Did the mouse action go weird on you after changing the sensitivity?

 No.
I was saying that all I found in MDK to change mouse properties was
the sensitivity and threshold setting. I found no mouse driver
 selection setting.

Is your mouse function completely dead?

 No.
It just behaves very weird about every minute.

And, do you still have your CD icons on the virtual desktop?

I have the "CD-ROM" icon on my desktop. When I click on it, I hear and
see my *FLOPPY DRIVE* being accessed, and I get the message "Can't
access /mnt/cdrom" (or something the like, I can't remember exactly
now). The CD doesn't do anything. Not even the LED lighting up,
 nothing.

If you place a CD in the CD tray, and double-click on it, does it
  start up?

 See above.

Re: [newbie] Registered Linux User??

2000-07-11 Thread Anthony Huereca

It's the Linux registry. Since you can get Linux very easily without being
tracked, some guys setup a registration service to more accuratly count how
many people use Linux. Unfortunatly most people don't know about it, so the
amount of officially registered users are small. But he also calculates teh
estimated amounts using guesswork, which produces much more hopeful numbers.

Anyway, the URL for all this is http://counter.li.org

Hi! I know this may be off topic but I see people with signatures that have a
"RegisteredLinux User number" Whats that? And can I register too? I may

Re: [newbie] Soundblaster Live

2000-07-11 Thread Dennis

I am not too sure but I guess Pentium III 500 and above and celeron 500 (or
higher) and above are using a different core architecture in the CPU. You
can see it from the KDE properties page.

I have both the older version (99 edition) and the latest (2000 edition)
which has very slight different on their design. Both work on my box when
using PII-350 and now I am using PIII-600E with everything the same except
change the CPU, and the SBLive failed to work.

My box is dual boot with win98se, and the same thing happened, and I ended
up with downloading the so-called "latest" driver from CL website and patch
it to work, however, still no luck in Linux.

This is not conclusive but I have done whatever I can and the card is still
mute and error loading the module are shown during bootup and shutdown.

If it work with 7.0 it should work with 7.1. For you, I don't think that's
any problem here.

Good luck to you.

Re: [newbie] How do I start INETD?

2000-07-11 Thread Pete Clapham

Hi --

Depending on how 7.1 works (I'm assuming it works like 7.0, which I have), you click
on DrakConf as root and then on Startup.
Choose the packages (in your case inetd) you want to start. They should start. You
can also invoke LinuxConf and go to local
file systems on the control tab and choose Control Service Activity. Click on INETD
and choose to start it OR to enable it. This
should solve your problem.
