I think it has to do with the model of the drive. I have no other way to
eject the disk either than to push the button on the drive.

Dear Anyone, I did look up the zip drive in the archives and I really
can't seem to find the answer that applies to my problem so far. The
etc/fstab does have /dev/hdc4 in it. Also, Drakconf says it is now
mounted (supermount) but I just do not know how to get my zip icon to
open my zip disk. I know that it is something I am missing somewhere.
I have the dual system with LinuxMandrake7.0 complete and Windows 95.
It is an Atapi internal IDE Zip drive. Yes, I think I have it as Vfat
for the files. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you. Marcia

Yes, it's great but it's not support codepages... => in Linux only
Netscape mail & Pine support it.

It sounds like you first have to run

$ make install

and after that

$ make

That should do it.

I would reinstall the SANE package. rpm -Uvh sane...rpm and things should
be okay again.

In fact there was very little to it.
1. Make sure your scanner is turned on when booting, so the scsi card
reports the scanner when it is initialized.
2. run xscanimage. That is what did all the work for me. It detected a
scanner, asked me if I own a Mustek scanner, I said yes, and then
xscanimage told me to scan away.

That's all I did, so far all I can tell you. Hope this helps a little

[newbie] newbie-saving into floppy

2000-08-17 Thread Marcia Waller

Dear all, Usually I have no problem with opening my floppy disk with my
floppy icon until tonight. I tried saving a file into it which just did not
work. I gave up on that. Then I went to my floppy icon and tried to open it
and got an error message that it was already mounted or busy. I must have
caused a problem there. Any ideas?

Also, how do you save a file or document that you create in StarOffice, text
editor, or another program and make sure it is saved in your floppy disk or
zip disk? I am used to doing that in Windows which was quite easy, but have
not figured out how to do it in Linux. Any help will be welcome. Thank you.

[newbie] popper hung

2000-08-17 Thread Joseph Lee Pereira

Hello,
I have found that by repeatedly hitting the Get Mail you basically
lock up sendmail. It does not matter what mail client you use,
Netscape, Pegasus, etc. One user knowing this trick can lock up mail
retrieval for the entire network.

Anyone have a solution?

Using:
Sendmail 8.10.1
Kernel 2.2.16
Mandrake 7.1
popper 4.24

Re: [newbie] SoundBlaster Live! Configuration Issues

2000-08-17 Thread philomena

You could try downloading the latest verison of HardDrake - it will require a an
updated kernel, alsa, (both from the Mandrake update site) and and a few other
packages - I also got the latest version of the emu10k1 driver from creative labs -
after I did that, the card worked like a charm. Some people get their
SBLive! Value card working right away just by configuring with sndconfig - thst
didn't work for me - I had to do the upgrading.

cheers,

[newbie] SoundBlaster Live! Configuration Issues

2000-08-17 Thread Guy and Jeanne Bergeson

I have installed Mandrake 7.1 in a dual boot configuration on a Gateway computer
running a 550 MHz P3. The sound card I have is a SoundBlaster Live! There is some
incompatiblity between what windows wants and what Linux wants. Windows seems to need
the digital output and Linux seems to need the analog output.

In addition when I attempt to configure the soundcard I get the following:
Error in play call!
Sox: Can't open output file '/dev/dsp'. No such device

Also on shutdown I get a fail on the Aux Mixer line.

Is this just a driver issue? Have I missed something in the install and configuration?

One thing you find about MS-DOS, is that Microsoft in their eternal

Actually, its easy to switch between the two. Change the /etc/X11/X symlink so
that it is pointing to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 (for 4.0) instead of
/sr/X11R6/bin/SVGA (or whatever) that it is in 3.3.6.

To see which version you're running, at a prompt type XFree86 -version

I don't think that's quite what he meant Jon, and it's those sort of answers
that keep the divide so wide between different OS users. Picking hardware
is different than picking an entire platform; when I go to the computer
store to buy a cd/rw, I bring it home - plug it in - load the software
(under windows) and I'm up burning cd's within the hour. Under Linux, it's
going to require a kernel recompile (if you didn't previously have a burner
attached) to start with; a task that's not really for the beginner! I've
compiled my kernel a number of times, and while I'm getting better at it,
I'm still no expert.

I understand that quite a number of people that use linux now were once (if
not still) windows users, and are possibly still mad at Bill; that's what
we're really talking about here. Is Windows really horrible at everything?
Is Linux REALLY better with the average desktop app? Come on, be honest! I
use all those same apps, you're not kidding anybody! I'm studying for my
MCSE, but I really want to work with Linux and Unix - I also want to play
with Mac - I LOVE COMPUTERS!!!

Let's stop the quibbling, the truth is obvious - people love to hate Bill.
Let's just realize where we're at and then we can be clear about where we
want to go.

Hi to all

And today, when I tried to reboot, I had these messages:

...unexpected inconsistency; run fsck manually

and it returns in a terminal-type console at the root level

So, what to do next?

Re: [newbie] Auto-starting kicq question?

2000-08-17 Thread Greg Stewart

Per the /etc/ppp/ip-up file, you really shouldn't make the changes directly
there, make a file called /etc/ppp/ip-up.local (use: touch
/etc/ppp/ip-up.local or just vi it) and possibly change the sructure of
your original entry to:

/usr/bin/./kicq

there's a 'slash-dot-slash' between bin and kicq -- I'm never sure if those
dots can be seen well enough (I sure have trouble). Sometime the system
doesn't know the execute a file even when given the path.

If you visit the numerous hardware and overclocking sites on the
Net, the first issue you'll seen again and again is the revelevance
of hardware load and temps to performance and stability. As I said
below, install some monitoring software (it's supported by all but
the junkiest of hardware), and see for yourself. It will be
immediately apparent, I promise. If your hardware won't support
monitoring, just read lm_sensors docs.

The relationship between system load and temps is very basic and
prob'ly gettin OT for this list. A detailed explanation certainly
is. Still tho, I believe it's important that those who might be
unaware of Netscape's ld-linux.so2 gone wild problems, should also
be acquainted with it's implications involving hardware
failure/file system corruption.

I've tried everywhere and no one can help me with this problem:

Hi
i installed mandrake[7.1 -downloaded off the website on tuesday lastweek]
without a network card and it worked fine.
Xwindows and all.
Then i installed a 3com network card into my computer and reinstalled
mandrake. and i got this error when i typed 'startx'
--
Bug in dynamic Linker id.so: dynamic_link.h:57: elf_get_dynamic_info:

ok so i took out the 3com and reinstalled mandrake with no network card and
everything worked fine.

then i found a realtek8029 card and installed it in my computer and
re-installed mandrake.
mandrake found the card straight away and installed it. but the same problem
with Xwindows. however the network card works fine in the shell.

i reinstalled mandrake with a 'server' install option
it worked fine except it didn't load the normal xwindows kde/grome..or maybe
it did but it was a wierd version and only showed a blank desktop with a
terminal. in a separate window.

i am a newbie to linux and this is my first install of a distro.
please don't tell me to get a new distro as i downloaded this and it took
forever and i had to get lend of a cd burner...etc..

thanks in advance for any help offered.

I wasn't refureing to os install, I was talking about installing apps. I
know the rpm stuff make it easy to install in linux, but under windows you
dont even have to open the file. Put in the cd and the install starts
itsself. Windows is easeier to install than linux for me, because windows
manages all the disk partitioning, formating and hardware detection itsself.
And windows auto detects isa devices.

Does Mandrake document the packages that are installed by default with each type of install?

For example, if I use the "Server" install, what packages are installed?

You are absolutely correct.  I wish I could run Win98 on my Amiga.  For that matter, it would be really neat if I could run Win2000 on my Mac.  :)

Disclaimer:  I'm far from a *nix expert.  I've only been using Linux on a regular basis for a couple of months.  I actually like Windoze.  I've been a computer geek for 19 years playing with various hardware during that time.  So I found your comment quite humorous.

No OS is going to work on every piece of hardware.  It just isn't going to happen.  In order to get the most stable system you want, you need to match your hardware to your OS.  All the big boys do it.  That is why Dell/Gateway/whoever won't support a workstation that was sold with Win98 but now has Win2000.  We deal with this constantly at work...

I also wonder if there is any other OS that supports as many different architectures as Linux (x86 - PCs, 68k - Mac / Amiga, PPC - Mac / whoknows, and countless others).

Just my $.02...

For the first questtion, find someone with the disk I sure they could
send you the file (ask at irc.linux.com [you can even connect if you are
useing win]). For the second one type man mount at the command line (Use

read the HOW-TO's in the /usr/doc directory, may help you a bit when

[newbie] One Question One Problem

2000-08-17 Thread William Presho

Hello All

Have a question: When the computer first boots it says something about
ide bus speed, assumes 33 MHz if this is not correct use idebus=xx.
where do I find this.

Now the problem: When I first typed xscanimage in the terminal window it
worked fine. I then installed Gimp. Now if I type xscanimage I get the
following xscanimage: error in loading shared libraries: libgimp.so.1:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Help how do you fix this.

Well, that's a good question Is that a bug with HardDrake??

To check if HardDrake works fine, it would be cool to be able to validate
the Hardware config using some other way... Is it thus possible to check
the hardware config through the command line? What would I need to do (what
commands to type)??

Thx !!

PS.: To answer that initial question, my @home address is a Windows (NT 4

I think that X 4.0 writes over x 3.3.6 so you may have a prob using both

Don't send html. it is crap. crap. crap.crap. crap. Did I mention it is
crap. it is for web pages not emails.

BTW the kde directory is refering to either the .kde directory in your

on the error message. Would be nice if you copyied it out exactly so we
new what you where talking about.)

 Hi there.

To configure the mount point select the Linux Native partion and choose
Edit from the choice at the bottom. When asked for a mount point just
place a forward slash / to show that this is the root partition.

When downloading, click on the filename you want and Netscape will
automatically begin downloading the file for you. Files tend to be placed in
your home directory. They can be installed simply by typing as root

  rpm -ivh .

If you are using one of the graphical desktops then as root open your home
directory and click on the downloaded file. Once the RPMDrake has opened
click install and that's it.

You're right and wrong. That should have been "..cpu's internal
core [temperature] to increase.." Sorry. You're wrong about, if I
read you right, the cpu being in more or less constant state when
the power's on. Install lm_sensor's or Khealthcare and you'll
instantly see what I mean. At idle to normal load in an air cooled
system, your cpu will (should) be at room temp, eg, 22 to 26C.
Under load, this will immediately rise to (hopefully no more than)
30 to 35C. Take the load off, and the cpu should immediately drop
back to room temp. Under EXTREME load (like with cpuburn), ideally
the core temp should be kept under 45C. Intel cpu's (>= Pentium)
are the best to monitor because they have an internal diode that
reports to a (decent) motherboard's i2c/SMBus the cpu core's temp.
Using a probe (thermistor) is a within 10C guess at best.

I have very adequate cooling for a p3-450 overclocked to 608mhz.
I have the cpu's core temp displayed constantly on Kpanel using
Khealthcare. At idle/normal load, it's room temp (~25C). During a
kernel compile it will reach 35 to 40C. Running cpuburn it will
quickly reach 43C and stay there till cpuburn is quit. When
Nutscrape goes wild (ld-linux.so.2) the temp will immediately jump
to ~40C. Using this temp gauge, I often know NS's fixin to crash,
before it does ;)

I have an Alpha heatsink with dual 26cfm cpu fans. Most systems
have a lot lesser cooling whether it's OEM or 'retail' (ie, cpu
manufacturer's hs/fan). Some systems, Dell for example, eliminate
the cpu fan, and depend on air being drawn by the power supply's
fan to cool the cpu :( Some systems are just plain full of dust
bunnies. In all of these 'lesser' cooling situations, letting
ld-linux.so.2 run wild risks hardware failure and/or file system
corruption.

  cpuburn, http://users.ev1.net/~redelm/
  lm_sensors, http://www.netroedge.com/~lm78/ (if you're
interested in learning more about hardware, monitoring,
etc., I'd suggest reading lm_sensors docs)

um yes :-)

You redirect the same way actually, > will redirect standard output to a
file >> will append standard output to a file (> just overwrites it) <
redirects standard input to be used from a file. 2> redirects standard
error which is most error messages. If you're trying to redirect error
messages you can use 2>. If you want standard output and standard error
to go to the same file, you would use: 2> somefile.txt 1>&2 voila :-)

Oh and you can use the | (pipe) symbol to pipe the output from one
command to another command. For example, with me, Netscape hangs every
so often. So at the command line, I just execute ps -ef | grep
"netscape" that will show me the process id numbers for Netscape, since
the output for the ps command is going to grep, and grep is looking
through that output for the string "netscape".

[newbie] Auto-starting kicq question?

2000-08-17 Thread Ronald J. Hall

Hmm, I posted this message a day or 2 ago, but I've still not seen it
appear so...I'm resending it - with apologies if it appears twice.

Anyways, I want kicq (now that I've got it working well) to start as
soon as I'm connected to the 'Net. I looked at /etc/ip-up to see how
PMfirewall does it, so I just added this line to /etc/ip-up:

/usr/bin/kicq

but I guess thats not quite right. Any ideas, and thanks! ;-)

[newbie] how about CompuServe for Linux?

2000-08-17 Thread Adrian Smith

with all this AOL talk, does anyone out there know if CompuServe (owned by AOL of
course) has a Linux software? CS is my main email address and if the world were
perfect there would be a CS program that could read my current address book & email
folders and then life would be good.

and while i'm asking
anyone know of a Linux word processor that can read files created in:
Ami Pro 3.0 *.sam
MS Works 4.5 *.wps *.wks

StarOffice doesn't do either of these directly... i'd have to convert the orignals to
RTF or something those have been my main writing tools for years & years, and
since i'm a writer me gots loads of files in those formats.

oh yea... and...
no just kidding, i'll save that question for after i get netscape updated to the
latest & greatest. maybe it will fix =)

thanks all

With what ? I presume you used the win9.X start-up disk. Does you boot disk
contain cdrom drivers.Try to access your cdrom drive, then cd\dosutils,
execute autoboot.bat from there.
NO GO ?
Then you have to create a linux installation disk, again boot-up with your
win9.X boot-up disk, must have cdrom drivers to activate the rom drive, say
your cdrom drive is drive D:
follow these instructions ffrom RH 6.0 Installation Guide:
C:\> d:
D:\> cd \dosutils {press ENTER}
D:\dosutils>rawrite {press ENTER}
Enter disk image source file name: ..\images\boot.img {press ENTER}
Enter target diskette drive : a: {press ENTER}
Please insert a formatted diskette into drive A: and
press  -- ENTER -- : {press ENTER}

after drive A: light has gone out your linux installation boot disk is ready.
Reboot your computer with this disk in drive A: and follow instructions on
the monitor.
Remember to choose *workstation class installaion*
I have installed RedHat 6.0 following above routine.
Good luck, mail me direct if you wish to.
