[newbie] HardDrake dependency

2000-09-01 Thread Dennis Myers

Hi folks, I d/l'd the new version of Harddrake and then tried to
install. I was able to take care of all of the dependencies but one.
It needs "detect" , what ever that is. Does anyone know what it is
looking for? Thanks for the help, Dennis

[newbie] Network configuration questions.

2000-09-01 Thread James Laine

I am an extreme newbie to Linux or any type of Unix, but am very experienced
with Windows networking, and have some minor experience with Netware
networking. As a result, most of my questions will be related to the
differences between methods on the various operating systems. I am NOT a
newbie to networking, just to Linux.

I installed Linux Mandrake 7.1 this afternoon, and all went well. It boots
fine, and loads the KDE without issue.

However, this PC has 2 network adaptors. The first is a 3COM 3C900B, and
the second is an Intel 82557. When I clicked on the "Network Configuration"
under DrakConf, and went in to "Basic Host Information", I see that only
"Adaptor 1" has a "net device".

My first question then is:
How do I activate the second network adaptor (the Intel one) ?

I decided I could deal with that later, and proceeded to configure the first
adaptor for use with my Cable Modem for internet purposes. I entered the
appropriate host name as required by my cable internet provider, and
selected DHCP configuration mode on the first adaptor. Then applied the
changes. I assume that I don't need to enter any other details, as they
should be provided by the DHCP server.

>From the Konsole, I tried to PING the known gateway machine on my service
provider's network (and a few other know public IP addresses), but got a
message indicating that the network was unreachable. The same issue
remained after a complete shutdown and re-start.

My next questions then are:
Where can I see what network protocols are bound to the various network
adaptors?
How can I get a quick report of the active TCP/IP configuration obtained
from the DHCP server?
(like IPCONFIG under WindowsNT or WINIPCFG under Windows9x)
How can I perform an on-the-spot refresh of the TCP/IP configuration from
the DHCP server?

Eventually, I want to use this Linux box as a firewall between my main PC
and my cable internet service.

Thanks in advance.
- James.

the reverse tick feeds the output of a command into another, sort of a reverse
pipe.

example, I have a file called viking.txt on my machine, I know the name of the
file, but forget exactly where it is, and I want to view it

I can do the following
less `locate viking.txt`
and now that I know where it is, I can then take a look at it with less

Thanks Paul for the clear lesson. And I read the relevant man page.
But my problem seems elsewhere. When I go into a directory - using ls - I find
that some files are red. But on my monitor this color is difficult to read.
So I'm trying to find out what file I can edit to change that choice of color.

Re: [newbie] grub & Xserver4.0 >> Xserver3x

2000-09-01 Thread GAPrichard

Thanks for your reply, and please pardon MY late reply to you. In my
newly installed Xserver 4.0 (as part of my 7.1 upgrade), I had white text on
a white background (I could SOMETIMES change part of the screen to Pumpkin
color (the color I had set for the root toolbar in my 7.0 installation)) with
black and blue horizontal stripes obscuring. Working with an illegible
screen I screwed things up so badly I had to reinstall (this means it
wouldn't even boot to a login screen, before somebody asks). Since I was
doing it over anyhow, I tried it several different ways and ended up
patritioning / (root) much larger. The install of 7.0 and update to 7.1 went
smoothly and completed Thurs night. I have 460 newbie messages to catch up
with before I go back to set up sound and modem and begin working with it.

It looks like a path problem, what security option did you choose when

You can change your search path in the .bashXXX files in your home

Is your problem that the RPM names are so long?
Have you ever heard of "file completion"? Type in 3 or 4 characters of the
name and press TAB. That will fill in as much as possible of the name.
Try it and be surprised.

Hardware Detection

Hi all,
I'm no Linux expert, but I got this working awhile back.

This is usually the case, unless your school has a firewall that blocks
X traffic (in that case I use ssh (secure shell)). You also need to set
the DISPLAY environmental variable on the remote machine to point to
your machine.

export DISPLAY=your.machine.name.here:0

(sometimes your telnet program will set this automatically, check it
after you log in using
echo $DISPLAY)

You also need to allow the machine via xhost (see man page) (I think!).

Hope this helps.

If I'm not mistaken, telnet isn't a graphical environment. For you to
use the apps you mentioned, you would need to open an X-terminal
on the foreign machine. The concept you described would only work
if you were mounting the foreign drives to your machine.

Re: [newbie] Modem help needed

2000-09-01 Thread Charles A Edwards

Verify your BIOS is set for Non PnP OS
In Linux PCI modems are ttySs.
The setserial commands must be issued as root.
For a PCI modem use the followin directions.

. Log in as root and from terminal enter the following command
# cat /proc/pci

This will list all your PCI devices. On this list you should see either
Communication controller or Communication device,
That listing is your modem. If it shows as Comm. device you have a winmodem
and it won't work in Linux.
If it shows as Comm. controller proceed as follows:
Write down the first I/O range. In the example I am using 0xd800 replace
that with yours.
Enter the following
# setserial /dev/ttyS3 port 0xd800 spd_vhi skip_test auto_irq autoconfig
If there are no errors, then enter
# setserial /dev/ttyS3 uart 16550A

Select /dev/ttyS3 as the device in kppp and your modem should now initalize
and operate.
To make this perm. you will need to edit your rc.local file which is located
in the /etc/rc.d directory. Add the 2 setserial lines to the end of this
file Save the changes and reboot your system.

[newbie] linux to unix

2000-09-01 Thread Nijs, Vincent

Dear Mandrake user,

I had assumed that if I would telnet to my schools Unix system from within
Gnome i would be able to use emacs, xemacs, nedit etc. without needing any
additional Xwindows system for the graphical display.

Shouldn't this be the case (?) and if not might someone suggest a possible
solution/program ?

Thanks in advance,

Vincent

[newbie] Parallel port upgrade of Linux.

2000-09-01 Thread Austin L. Denyer

Hi.

I'm running Mandrake 7.0-2 on my laptop. I would like to upgrade to 7.1
for the improved USB support.

My previous installation was done by downloading the files from their
website onto a FAT32 partition (I have a Win98 dual boot) and doing a HD
install.

Unfortunately I do not have the disk space to download the required
files for 7.1 onto the FAT32 partition, so I need to dump them onto
another PC.

Is there a way of doing a FTP install using a parallel link? The other
PC runs (other than Win98) SlackWare 7.1 UMSDOS.

I do not have any other way of networking at the moment.

[newbie] Cron job

2000-09-01 Thread Richard Davies

Hi,

I have written the following and I want cron to run it for me. It is in a
file called /etc/cron.d/katrina

59 22 * * * root passwd -l katrina
00 23 * * * root halt
00 8 * * * root passwd -u katrina

The first line works and locks katrina's password
The second line does nothing at all. What I really want this to do if to drop
back to the login screen but I can't find the command for that. I thought that
halt, shutdown now, shutdown -n now or poweroff, while being overkill should do
the job. They don't
The third line works.

I have checked this by logging in as user and doing su katrina at 22:59 the
command stops working and at 08:00 starts again.

Any ideas what I have done wrong?

[newbie] how to upgrade rpm's with mdk in the name?

2000-09-01 Thread Larry Hignight

Let me first start off by saying I love Mandrake and rpm I think both
are great. However, I'm getting really frustrated with the rpm's that
Mandrake is including in their distro. It seems like all of them have the
syntax of rpmname-version#-mdk. This makes a simple rpm -Uvh upgrage nearly
impossbile without rpm -e a bunch of stuff. For instance, the other day I
needed to upgrade the SDL libraries, but in order to do it correctly I had
to rpm -e probably 12 packages to install the current version of SDL. Now I
want to upgrade esound and I'm afraid that in order to that I'll have to
literally remove gnome and reinstall it. If anyone knows of a way to
upgrade these packages please post it I'm going crazy thinking about
this one. Also, does anyone have any experience using the cooker? I'm
starting to think it may be an easier, if slightly less stable, solution.

To make playmidi run succesfully on an SB32 you need to run

playmidi -a

I use ump, and that works fine, though.

Re: [newbie] OT Linux gaming OT -- Heroes 3

2000-09-01 Thread Larry Hignight

It is kind of wierd the way that it hangs up after the music or after the
first turn ends in my case. I can then ctrl-alt-backspace and start the
game again without sound (apparently the sound device is busy) and it won't
hang up at all. Well, at least for 20 minutes or so. At any rate, I tried
playing with a couple of different settings. Try the following and see what
results you guys get

at a terminal try

esd (this should make a r2d2 like sound)
ctrl - c
then start the game I no longer have the hang up but I'm missing some
of the sound ... or so it seems

you might also want to try

export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=esd

Oddly enough, most games that I've tried have tended to work better on a
standard Mandrake install then Caldera. This one is the exception as it
seems to work fairly well on my Caldera box.

You should either download/purchase Mandrake 7.1 or install XFree 4.01
otherwise you'll probably continue to have problems with the card. Not to
mention that Mandrake 7.1 is a just a much better product then 7.0 imho.
For 2d graphics none of this probably mattters.

Do yourself a favor and get Mandrake7.1, if it isn't satisfactory then
upgrade to XFree4.1

If you have more then one screen resolution set in the XF86config file
(look in /etc), screen resolutions can be changed by holding down ctrl-alt
and depressing either the keypad - or + key to scroll thru the listed
resolutions. Of course, you could also open up DrakConf and change the
resolution there as well.

Maybe, but at what price? It cost me (at the time) the equivalent of
over six week's rent just to upgrade the machine from 4mb to 8mb RAM.
Having to pay another three month's worth just to get to a hardware
level that would support the OS was not economically viable - at least,
not to me.

Yes, you do get what you pay for. But, in terms of value for money, the
cost of the OS plus hardware placed an effective OS/2 system WAY beyond
the means of J. Random User. It was a heavy price even for me, and I
was one of those geeks who spent every available penny on my Beloved
System. (Which is probably why I didn't marry until I was in my
thirties, and even then, perhaps predictably, to a girl from another
continent who I met on the Internet...)

The same sort of thing could be said of NetWare vs. NT. I used to be
the Network Administrator for a company that ran old hardware (IBM PS/2)
with a legacy DOS-based stock control system. One of the servers was a
486 PS/2 with 32 megs of RAM, with mirrored drives and 50 users. It ran
well using NetWare 3.12, even after I added TCP/IP support (it continued
to run IPX/SPX for the DOS app.) so that it could talk to the new
(Linux) fax server over the WAN. Try THAT with NT...

The configuration was painful too, for anything that was not
specifically written for OS/2 (which, let's face it, was most things).
For example, Doom (which was ported to almost everything!) was a pain in
the @$$ to set up, with a list of configuration settings as long as your
arm. And back then, NO-ONE could live without Doom #;-D (The main
reason I decided to network the four PCs (one 486, three 386) that I had
at the time was so that my friends and I could DeathMatch at weekends.
Oh yes, those were the days, especially when the Internet patch came out
so that we could finally use the Internet for the REAL reason that Al
Gore invented it. )

> > Anyway, I'm interested in your comments, as I gave up with OS/2

> > although I think we ought to take this thread to private e-mail
> > before the net.police get us #;-D
>
> Please don't ... I'll cheerfully add a and look forward to more
> conversation on the subject.

My main concern is aimed at those who have to pay for their on-line
time. I for one used to work overseas a lot, and connected to the
Internet using a laptop and cellphone (frequently at no better than
2400bps thanks to crap international connectivity) and was paying
$1.60/min for the International call to my ISP (thanks to the rip-off
International Roaming rates). Too many off-topic posts used to cost me
a fortune.

I WAS thinking of setting up a separate list for off-topic stuff once I
got my ADSL set up, but as BellSouth (my ADSL ISP) only gave me a USB
modem (un-supported by Linux) the only machine I have access to with
ADSL connectivity is my Wife's Win98 box. Call me old-fashioned, but it
just didn't seem right to host Linux lists on Micro$oft boxen. Having
said that, if it is an off-topic list...

Once things settle down financially (i.e, the INS give me my green card
so that I can finally work again!) I'll get the necessary hardware to
network everything. Then, assuming that no-one else has done it by
then, I'll set the other list up - unless you guys are desperate, in
which case I could set up a basic 'forward to group' rule on this
machine...

What to you think?

Regards,
Ozz.

Hallo again!!

Thanks for your answer! I've noticed i had both plugger 3.2 and ump 1.0

And now i notice that midis are not played but through the external port

Re: [newbie] Wine: How to start?

2000-09-01 Thread Goldenpi

The file not found is most likely a file not found. It should be there,
perhaps it is related to the keyboard.

My fancy but useless keyboard runs wine perfectly. You could either download
the correct profile or you could dump the keyboard and get a plain keyboard.
The buttons dont work under linux anyway.

You do you want to run notepad? linux has some perfectly good notepad type
programs.

Mark,

I was unable to get an IP on the school network (which uses DHCP). Somewhere
in the nework-howto documentation it was suggested to use the following the
Redhat, Mandrake etc. in this type of situation:

Issue the command '/sbin/pump -I eht0 -h hostname' - it worked for me.

You can't have the host machine assign an IP address to itself. You have

i just (took for ever actually) downloaded the two isos for 7.1, the
md5sums check out for both, after burning using xcdroast and verifying
the burnt image to be the same as the downloaded iso and double checking
the md5sum of the iso to be sure, there is still a discrepency between
the actual md5sum of the cdrom.img and the one quoted, this probably
explains whay installing from a floppy made from this image falls over,
but i can't see how this can be unless mandrake made an iso with a
faulty floppy image in it.

any ideas, suggestions?

the version file in the root of the burnt cdrom reads 'Linux-Mandrake
Helium 2517'

2000-09-01 Thread Hasan

Hmmm, I am new to Linux too.First be sure to connect your line to modem
correct. If u v gone through it.check at which com is your modem. For example
mine was /dev/ttys3. When i run kppd it said /dev/modem. Change it to
correct
value.

Try this also resolv.conf file.
Try to open /etc/resolv.conf file with the editor you prefer
and add 'nameserver=ipnumber' line .Here ipnumber is the number your isp
should provide you with.
Try it out. Nothing to lose

[newbie] vmware 2.0

2000-09-01 Thread J. Ricardo Rizzo

Hello,

I downloaded vmware 2.0 for linux and I could run it on my PC. I have
the two OS on the same HD, win98 and Mandrake 7.0-2 (air), kernel
2.2.14-15mdk.

I can start the virtual machine, boot but a lot o zeroes appears
when the graphic display would be there. Probably the graphic card get
the problem, as vmware support tells me. The graphic card is a Voodoo3
3000. Any help, please?

Thanks in advance,

[newbie] Voodoo3 3000

2000-09-01 Thread J. Ricardo Rizzo

-- Hello everybody,

I recently installed Mandrake 7.0-2(Air) on my Athlon K7-600MHz. I have
an AGP card Voodoo3 3000. My XFree version, 3.3.5 does not recognize
this graphic card, and then I installed it as a Voodoo3 2000. I worked
fine with almost all tasks (except with vmware, as I will refer in a
later e-mail). Anyway, I read the on-line help and the news from
'linux.3dfx.com', and downloaded the driver. I installed the Xfree
version downloaded and the driver, but never seems to happens. The
graphic card is still installed as a Voodoo3 2000.

By the way, may I see the outputs on a TV, using the TV out connector?
How?

And finally, is it possible in the kde environment to quickly change the
resolution and colour deepness like on startx?

Many thanks in advance,

Ricardo

Okay, some examples (also from man rxvt):

When I run PINE: rxvt -geometry 80x34 -cr blue -e pine
Gives me 80 columns/34 rows of term with a blue cursor. And pine of
 course.

rxvt -bg red -fg white gives me a 80x24 term with red background and white
letter.

rxvt -pixmap /home/paul/src/xfce/xfce-3.4.4/icons/Camera.xpm gives me a
term with Camera.xpm as background (makes horrible reading, but okay...)

Other things you can set:
-cr is cursor color
-pr is mouse cursor color (changes mouse cursor when over that
term)

-bd ... bordercolor
-fn ... fontname
-fb ... fontname BOLD

Well, you may get the picture by now. See man rxvt and play around to your
hearts content.

HardDrake 0.9.3 released
(http://forum.mandrakesoft.com/article.php3?sid=2901094425)

Here is what our hardware-guru has to tell you:

Alex writes "Mainly a bug-fix release, a boot option configuration box has been
added. Improved boot mode. ISDNsn webcams and bridges are now handled.

GNOME support is not included in RPMS but available in sources. "

So, if you have ISDN-card, webcam or bridge, rush for latest Cooker rpm-s and
give it a try. Also, if you have experienced problems with
hardware-configuration in the past, give it a try and report what you saw. This
is allready 3-rd release of Harddrake announced here, and it is likely to
detect/configure much more than the version you will find on 7.1 CD-s!

In case You still do not know what is harddrake, please read the What is
Harddrake?article.

I have been having a problem with mandrake update. It seems like it
won't connect to any servers. I have tried running it out of kde and
gnome, and still get no response. I have tried running from a terminal,
and nothing happens. Is there a new version of the program that I'm
missing. This is a real problem.

Thanks.

Here's what I get from what you are telling me. First of all, if linux mounts a drive,
in
this case your cdrom.. then it will not allow you access to the cdrom until it is
unmounted.
Ty making a boot floppy.
Go into the dosutils directory and run the windows version of rawrite. then where it
says image source.. select /mandrake/images/boot.img. When you boot off of the
disk..
Let me know if you get confused.. it's just that it's possible there's a bug in the
cdrom installer.. and the bootdisk one may work.. It's the same graphical install.

gets to the 24th file in the list of downloads (in the case where i ask it to install

You can't have the host machine assign an IP address to itself. You have
to set the IP address for that computer

My security is normal. I'm on a Pentium 333, with an SiS6326 (groan) board and
32 meg ram.

I suspect two things:
1) the gphoto rpm installed but my system lacked some
critical files. I shall try a .tar.gz version and see what happens. Which
version did you use?

 2) My serial com port is not being recognized for some
strange reason that is completely beyond both me and even Win95 which I assumed
automatically found such things.

I think I'll stick to my writing and leave the digital camera on the back
burner for a while.

[newbie] mounting win disk on linux4win

2000-09-01 Thread Craig Wallace

Hello there

A very basic question, reflecting my absolute begginer status in the world
of mandrake. I'm running linux4win, and am wanting to access my windows
files, by mounting the win disk. Only problem is that all the procedures I
have read assume you have paritioned the hard drive and are mounting hda1
to the linux tree. I haven't partioned my disk, but can I still use the
/dev/hda1 /windows...etc in the fstab file? Or will this have no effect? I
am aware partioning the drive and doing a "proper" linux instillation would
resolve this problem, but I want to learn a bit about the system before I
go full in...

Thanks in adavnce for your help
