[newbie-it] c++
ciao...rieccomi, sto cercando di capire come si installa e si compila un software...ho seguito alla lettera quello che dice il manuale di mandr7.1: ho copiato nella directory /usr/local/src il file che mi interessava *.tar.gz, ho lanciato il comando tar...mi si è liberata una manciata di files...fino a questo punto tutto ok...poi ho iniziato la configurazione, ho lanciato il comando ./configure e che mi esce fuori? checking for c++...no checking for g++...no checking for gcc...no checking for CC...no checking for cxx...no checking for cc++...no checking whether the c++ compiler (gcc) works...no configure: error: installation or configuration problem: c++ compiler cannot create executables come mi devo comportare? grazie per l'attenzione ciao, osva
[newbie-it] permessi...
[newbie] There's no sound in 7.2
Hi everybody. I just installed the latest greatist Mandrake of them all--- 7.2.However, there's one problem I am having is that there is no sounds and the aumix is inoperable. Harddrake has detected the soundcard but is unable to produce a midi sound. Did a sndconfig, it says that it's unsupported at this time. I have had sounds in 7.1 but not in this one. Probably a bug that never got paid attention. I have a Cirrus Logic CrystalClear SoundFusion CS4614/22/24. Anyone have any suggestion on where to go to get it up and running like it did in 7.1? Rob

[newbie] Security Question and SCSI Tape Utilities
Hi All, As I'm sure you all know I'm fairly new to Linux and I have a couple of simple questions. First - I've installed Mandrake 7.1 on a compaq ML370 using the high security option. The only thing I cannot do is telnet to the server from a different machine and log in as root, it establishes connection, but I cannot log in as root. I've checked /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny and they allow everything in (otherwise I could not connect...), and I've looked at the files in /etc/security and they seem to be fine. All of the lines in /etc/security/access.conf are commented out, so I assume that root should be allowed to telnet in. I must be missing something very basic! Second - the above server is used as a device server for a tape drive for our backup system, but when I installed Mandrake 7.1 the SCSI tape utilities (mt, stinint...) were not installed and nor were the man pages. Does anybody know what rpm they're in? Thanks in advance! Alan

I am trying to install Mandrake 7.2 from a network install. I installed 7.1 before with no problem through my cable modem. Re: [newbie] Quantum hard drives
By "failed" I mean it physically broke. After 2 years of use, the drive failed for the first time. My distributor sent me a new one (after about 4 months waiting!), and this one failed after only a few months. In the lead-up to the failure I had many bad blocks cropping up. It made clunky and high-pitched scratchy noises. It sounded as if the drive arm could not keep itself up and it kept falling down, scraping something in the process. My third drive appears to be working fine after a few months of use, but I'm being cautious... On Tue, 31 Oct 2000 14:35, Jeff wrote: On Mon, 30 Oct 2000, you wrote: That's funny... RE: [newbie] Problem with 3Com ether 3C905B under 7.1?
Michael, You should first make sure that your card is logically up. You can do this by sending it the ifup eth0 command. Then make sure you can ping you own ip address. If you can ping your own ip address then try your dns server. Also you have not mentioned setting up your default route so make sure you set it up also. [newbie] 2nd question - file permissions
okie this file permissions thing is starting to bug me. first - am i correct that a directory must be executable for it to be opened? i have linux/windows duel boot. i am a writer photographer right now i have a whole bunch of word processor files image files on a fat32 drive called "data" as in /mnt/data. so, i copyed from data to my home. i believe i used the command cp -R /mnt/data /home/skippi or something like that. result was, i ended up with /home/skippi/data and in that directory was everything on the fat32 drive "data" problem. i couldn't rename or delete anything. i noticed that all these files were owned by root. why so i did chown skippi -R data ok, now they all say skippi owns them. i did then chmod 666 -R data now a file shows something like this when doing ls -l -rw-rw-rw- 10 skippi skippi 71034 Oct 24 19:222 file_name first question, what does the "10" mean? now at this point, as skippi, i could not enter any of these directories, but as root i could. why then i did chmod 766 -R data now, as skippi i can enter the directories, but now all the files are marked as executables, which they are not. arrggh help explinations please my linux book explains chmod chown pretty well as far as switches go, but assumes that one knows everything else. =) evidently i am missing some important information. oh, and how 'bout this. when i am skippi and i save a file to a fat32 drive, it becomes owned by root. why??? thanks much all next question coming soon Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[newbie] 5th question - error on shutdown
at first i thought i caused this as at one point i wrecked havock on my 7.1 system, but when i did a clean install of 7.1 this shutdown error reappeared from the very start. starting killall /etc/rcid/rc6.d/s00 killall: /etc/rcid/init.d/fontfs: no such file or dirctory so evidently it is looking for a file /etc/rcid/init.d/fontfs which does not exist. is this a bad thing? should i have this file? what must i do about this one. thanks again. yes, one more qustion coming but an OT one =) Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[newbie] 4th question - HP 500C printer
there has recently been some talk about printers on the list which actually told me some things i need to know (now to empty that bloody print que which has become my enemy). but does anyone have a HP 500C printer working with 7.1? my printer worked just fine with 7.0. but once i went to 7.1 -- nothing but garbage will come out of it. i'm going to try some of the things that came up here recently if printer still no work i'll be back to you. maybe it will fix under 7.2=) thanks 2 more on the way Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

'kill -9 17' from 'man kill', DESCRIPTION kill sends the specified signal to the specified process. If no signal is specified, the TERM signal is sent. The TERM signal will kill processes which do not catch this signal. [newbie] 1st question -- CD burner crash burn
greetings all. first off, thanks to those of you who recomended CD burning programs for me. i'm playing around with those. i got two things regarding CD burning. i have been reading attempted to understand the man page for cdrecord. i have a CD drive build in (cdrom) and a SCSI burner (cdrom2). i was hoping there would be an easy way to copy a CD from the command line, such as cdrecord -duplicate cdrom cdrom2**i'm making up that switch you know** but as i look thru the pages it isn't that easy is it?? or is it?? am i missing anything here? next, i have burned a few CDs using gtoaster. i was burning one this weekend and went to fire up GIMP while doing that. short of the long, Linux did a windoze imitation. crashed burned big time. first gtoaster froze, then KFM, then eterm. ended up shutting down to reboot. do you think this was because i was trying to do too much at once? i burned CDs after this crash it was all good. my system is pretty low end. p2 - 250MHz - 60M ram (gotta upgrade ram next) also, had to turn off the power as i could not shut down normally. i kept getting the same error message over and over: unmounting file systems unmount2: device or resource busy unmount: /usr: device is busy SCSI host 0 abort (pid 5540) timed out - resetting SCSI bus is busy rest for host 0 channel 0 system appears to be just fine now - so this was just things freaking out because gtoaster crashed while using my CD burner yes? oh, i have no other SCSI devices. thanks for advice and tips. Re: [newbie] 1st question -- CD burner crash burn
cdrecord -duplicate cdrom cdrom2**i'm making up that switch you know** but as i look thru the pages it isn't that easy is it?? or is it?? am i missing anything here? I haven't done this but I don't think it should be a big problem. You may need some other command line switches depending on your setup and desires but it should work something like cdrecord -dummy dev=0,0,0 /mnt/cdrom Thought I'd stick in the -dummy to both test it and announce the source of this information :-) next, i have burned a few CDs using gtoaster. i was burning one this weekend and went to fire up GIMP while doing that. short of the long, Linux did a windoze imitation. crashed burned big time. first gtoaster froze, then KFM, then eterm. ended up shutting down to reboot. Burning CDs, in any OS is very much sensitive to the ability of the machine to keep the buffer full. If there's a fetch with nothing there you lose and the disk is trash. You can solve this problem by running at a slower speed using the -speed= option. Cheers --- Larry

[newbie] partitioning lockup
Sorry if this is a re-post. I never saw the original one show up... I'm booting from the CD-ROM to make a first install of 7.2 on a 27.9G IDE HD with only the existing windows partition. Everything seems to go fine until I hit the confirming screen which requires an OK to go ahead with the partitioning process. But as soon as this dialog box pops up, everything freezes up. I can't even scroll down, cancel, or go back to a previous install step. My only recourse is to reboot. Nothing seems to be harmed, as I can reboot to the CD to try again or reboot to the HD and get W98 back just fine. Why can't I partition? (I did scandisk and defrag as recommended.) Thanks for the help, Michael

I guess I'm confused as you guys talk as though you don't understand the idea of passwords. If you can get into your Linux box by simply booting and selecting failsafe without a password, what's the point of passwords at all? have no clue but it works on my system, if no one else can reproduce it so be it, however unless you have mistrusting roomates, or a micheivious child there is no real point in it when you access from failsafe, however the passwords are in place to prevent a network login, that is where security needs to be greatest. all of my roomates are windows dweebs or completely computer illiterate so i never have to worry about linux being hacked and i use a cmos password anyways no one on this base knows how to get passed that, sure there is a way but you have to tear this laptop completely apart to get at the jumpers! To clear a CMOS password you don't need to alter jumpers. With the computer unplugged, all you have to do is remove all batteries and wait. The button battery that powers the COMS memory often tips and slides sideways out of its holder. Sometimes sufficient power bleeds from another source to keep the CMOS intact, thats why I say to disconnect everything. 15 seconds usually works, though I've had to wait as much as 30 min. The CMOS information will clear, including the CMOS password. Reinsert the batteries, repower and change things as you will. In rare instances where there is a physical jumper for password use, the password may change to something generic which varies according to BIOS brand. So don't feel over confident about your security. It depends upon what the other person is willing to do (the trouble they are willing to go to). -Gary-

You might want to try Applixwords. It's usually part of a suite, but the word processor can be purchased (yeah, not freeware) separately for about US$40, I believe. It also handles .doc files very well and does a good job of maintaing formatting.
