Re: [newbie-it] problemi con l'audio

2001-02-18 Thread Gigi Cyber

Ciao a tutti,

/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/es1371.0: init

failed
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/es1371.o insmod
sound-slot-o failed

dipendere dall'irq o dall'indirizzo i/o.
Per questo motivo qualche giorno fa ho scritto che
avevo problemi di compilazione, perch ho trovato che
durante la compilazione possibile attribuirne uno
diverso...
qualcuno in grado di aiutarmi o darmi qualche spunto
di lavoro?
Grazie a tutti
Gijii

Re: [newbie] Installation (please help)

2001-02-18 Thread Ryan Le Gros

Ok after scandisking the drive and getting a clean report, i tried
reinstalling linux mandrake 7.2 powerpack deluxe with all packages MINUS the
Print Pro Seiko package. Same problem came up with about 2-3 mins of
installation time left. The errors are as follows:

ldconfig failed

no hdlists found

and it again boots me back to the partitioner.

the partitions i set up were for the development model (/, swap, /usr,
/home) Using a 10 gig drive I devoted 500mb to /, 250mb to swap, about 6.5
gigs to /usr and the remainder about 2.3 gigs to /home)

the machine is a p2 450 micron millenia.

Any ideas on what the errors mean and how i can install this OS completely?
(going to be using it for experimentation and development)

Mandrake 7.2 Complete installs just fine. No errors or warnings at all
whatsoever.

Someone please help, I bought both packages off the store shelf and cant
find the receipts anywhere which means I cant get a refund at this point.
thanks for your time

Ok today I fdisked my linux drive and changed it back to a windows

When attempting to reinstall after receiving this email I suspected
 possible
harddrive sector corruption, so this time through I had the installer
 check
the partitions for bad blocks. This process seemed to take ages and ages
  (nearly 20-30 mins[is this normal on a p2 450?]) and then finally
punched
through to package selection where I again selected all packages hoping
 that
the possibly bad blocks on my drive were now marked and would be
skipped.
however once again I received the same errors at the same point in the
installation. Tomorrow I am going to try installing without the
seemingly
faulty package and if it manages to go through ill know that I have a
 faulty
CD. if it fails once again but the next package up, I am fairly certain
my
harddrive is the problem and will get a replacement together. Is there
any
way to tell whether or not my drive is faulty?

I'll keep you posted, thanks for the tips.

Ryan; During selection of partitions, did you alter the size of your
 swap
partition? This can have bad effects on your installation. Try using
the
"Reccommended" installation method, then repeat installation using
"Customised" - Update , not "Install" . Remove any packages you don't
 want
  on
your system prior to doing the Customized Update. What you need here
is
 a
stable installation first, then add the extra's that you want. Have
you
  tried
doing your previous installations exactly the same way each time? If
so,
  you
may have a bad sector on your hard drive, and the same package is
 causing
  the
same problem each time because it's on the bad sector. In which case
it
  only
appears that this package is causing your problem, but in fact the
drive
  is
the problem. Can you get by without the seiko printpro package? At
least
  for
now? I'd like to suggest that you install as per above suggestions.
When
  the
PC is running smoothly ( a day or so ) do the updates ( DrakConf /
 Update
software ), and then do the Seiko / Printpro package. Something
 else,...If
you have a second PC connected to the Internet, find a reliable Update
  mirror
site, and then DOWNLOAD the updates, don't let the "Update Software"
  utility
do it. Burn the updates to CD, and use "Kpackage" to update the P2 450
system. Make sure to use the "Check Dependencies" option in Kpackage
 when
doing the updates. I've found some minor problems with the updater,
 where
  it
doesn't always install library files related to random packages, but
  Kpackage
will warn you if any package needs additional files before allowing
you
 to
install anything. Download the libraries or whatever it needs and
 install
them first. Hope this info helps.

Re: [newbie] hmmm.... LM 7.2 installation queries

2001-02-18 Thread H.J.Bathoorn

On Sunday 18 February 2001 01:36, you wrote:
 Hi all,

I've just decided to give Mandrake a go (Redhat otherwise) am
having some fun getting the LM 7.2 installer to work...:

 1) perl script errors on trying to mount "/" in the diskdruid
(??) program. I'd set the mount point format the disk, but
then trying to mount it would generate a perl script error on
line 218 of some script. Perhaps it's not necessary as it does
eventually get mounted anyway... just curious to know what the
 deal is.

 2) Erroneous disk space requirements reported: Regardless of
what I select on the high level package selection screen, it
always reports hefty disk space requirements. Manual calculation
would indicat that the selected package groups would require say
1.1GB, yet the installer would turn around stat that 2.6GB was
required. why is this? How can I get around it?

 3) Xserver lockups on resolution test. After successfully
detecting my S3 Virge/DX video card, and having spcified my
exact monitor type (Samsung 17GLi), the test of the minimal
resolution I'd selected (800x600x16, or did I select any??)
would just result in a permanent black screen. I've not really
ever had this problem before (to my recollection) under Redhat
 Debian.

 4) Missing files after install. After an eventual successful
install (various bypasses to the problems above) some tools seem
to be missing: Xconfigurator - should that not be in
/usr/X11R6/bin just like XF86config is?; On boot of an older
machine (installed via ftp from the newer one) init is loaded
but then asks what runlevel to switch to! I've not checked, but
perhaps the rc.d ( associated) directories are screwed up? I'm
wondering if perhaps these files ( others) are missing due to
the fact that I'd had to let the installed trim the installation
base down from 2.6GB to 1.3GB, as described in point 2 above.
hmmm surely these files would not get the chop so easily?

Well, I like the look/feel of LM, but these issues ain't no fun.
RH7.0 and DB2.2 installs went relatively flawlessly, so the
impression ain't too good. I've searched the newbie expert
mailing lists, found nothing much. Access to a
 news.mandrake.com would be nice too.

 Thanks, sTu.

HI there,

Check out your hdisk with fdisk (linux one) or cfdisk on what
partitions you actually have. Propably mdk left old ones intact
and created new ones - careful as it is on leaving other OS'es
intact on installation. I found partitioning with fdisk
beforehand, and choosing 'custom' or 'expert' install very helpful.
Don't forget to format the new partitions though.

good luck,

This will create a compressed archive with relative path which is
restricted to apps/files

$ cd /usr/share
$ tar czf apps.tgz apps/

This will create a compressed archive but have longer path data

$ cd /any/place/you_have_a_big_enough_filesystem
$ tar czf apps.tgz /usr/share/apps/

The c means create, x is extract. The z means filter with gzip. The
f, which must be last to work in some versions, means put it in this
file name I specify first on the command line. You can also use cvzf
for a verbose or cvvzf for very verbose if you want to see whats
happening.

gives instruction for getting some winmodems to work. Where is it?

The cdrw. Again, people keep mantioning a page which gives instructions but
I dont know where it is.

the dvd drive. Does linux play dvds? I cant seem to find a dvd player rpm on
any of my 3 linux cds. Are there any available? Or does the css code stop
them?

The sound card. Sndconfig detects it but says it is not supported. I tried
sndconfig --noprobe and used every setting I thought might work but nothing
will go. I tried upgradeing alsa (is that the right package) but it says I
need a newer kernel and I have no idea how to upgrade it.

 Hello,

Well not quite, but is sure sounded like it was trying to escape!

I was running netscape with several windows open (probably not hitting
swap)
and suddenly the normal brrrp brrrp type sounds that comes from my
hard
drive chaged to a loud and alarming RRRIP WHAK IP WHAK this
cycle
repeated from about 25 seconds. The system was pretty well locked up at
this
point, I could move the mouse but KDE was locked tight. I hit the reset
switch and then after the bios screen I got a message that the HD was not
ready and that I should insert a floppy if I wanted to boot. :-( Didn't
want
to do that so I hit the power switch and let the thing sit for a minute
then
tried it again. This time the system came up normally, fsck made some
repairs, but it didn't seem like it did anything more than it has on a
couple
of other occassions after the power has gone out unexpectedly. Anyhow, I
am
using the system now and it seems fine.

Any ideas what could have caused this? Is my new hard drive on the fast
track
to the trash heap? Or could I have simply hit a nasty bug is some bit of
software and it through my drive into convulsions?

BTW I did backup my data and some config files.

The drive: 30GB EIDE ULTRA-ATA 66 3.5LP QUANTUM FIREBALL Plus LM

I got linux going on my good computer at last. Dad will probably kill me
when he finds out where the 4 gig of his drive has gone through :(

A few minor problems through.

I have a winmodem. I saw someone give a link a while ago to a page which
gives instruction for getting some winmodems to work.

2001-02-18 Thread Dennis Myers

This may be a shot in the dark but I would allocate a minimum of 1G to the /
partition then cut the /usr to 6G and leave the rest. It may be that you
don't have enough room on / to do what you are trying to do. This thing will
install. I don't remember the start of this but be sure you have disabled the
virus protection in the bios also. Keep coming back to let us know how it
goes.

Start Konqueror or Netscape and write this address:

That should give you access to the web samba administration tool

The same, but for the hole server:

Have you tried to use the posted ones? The whole point of rpm is that it
is platform independant, so it matters not whether it is Mandrake, Suse,

version 4 rpms and I suspect that Mandrake uses version 3 still. If this
is the case, then you might like to upgrade to version 4 of the rpm

Oh and the filename used is not really relevant, it is a naming

It sounds like you downloaded a source tarball for AfterStep, and now you
need to compile and install it. Yes? You should have the rpm's you need on
one of the two Mandrake cd's. If not, try rpmfind.net.

On the other hand, have you tried Window Maker? It is on the Mandrake cd's,
it looks just like AfterStep, and AfterStep dock/wharf modules work in
Window Maker. It's what I use. Go to windowmaker.org to see some
screenshots. Also wm.themes.org for themes/screenshots.

Re: [newbie] Bootload Problems.

2001-02-18 Thread Charley Peggy Robinson

I ran into that today. I just installed a new computer: Gigabyte
7IXE, AMD Athlon 750. One HDD on IDE 0 as Master, other on IDE 1 as
Master. I told the BIOS to boot from IDE 1 when no boot floppy
present. Stuck in the LM Installation floppy and instaleed LM on IDE 1
(hdc1 in LM). At end of install, told LM to install the boot loader in
the MBR, thinking it would put it in HDE 1. Well, it didn't. It put it
in IDE 0! Merde. So tried to boot from IDE 1, stuck on "stage 1."
More merde. Cranked LM up from IDE O tried to reconfigure LILO to boot
from hdc1. Nope, sticks on stage 1. Grrr... So I can boot from the
floppy or the Windoze disk. Nuts.

I'm going to try cabling up the target HDD as IDE 0, install Linux and
then recable to IDE 1, then tell the BIOS to boot from IDE 1. May screw
up the hdd link in LM though.  If it doesn't work, I'll RTFMs some more;
see how the other option in the bootloader question works.

 ciao,

If you setup your "/home" directory to be on a seperate partition, the
damage of reinstalling is minimal. You will not lose anyfiles that you
have placed into this directory but you should not choose to **format**
this directory when the partitioner asks you for this action. Format "/"
and mayber "/boot" if they are seperate and you should be ok.

OK, I've sent in some info b$ on this and nothing works. Let me try it

After numerous tries at setting up this printer nothing happens. Have

The most constant error message I receive is regarding lp0. Trying to

Trying to print from a program I get "unable to open parallel port

Checking thru dmesg I do not find any reference to lp0/lp1 etc., a
printer or the

I figured after disabling PlugPlay in my Bios and receiving a previous
reply to
also reset my BIOS to ECP I did that using the AUTO option as well. HP

Why isn't lp0 recognized or setup. Where can I find the setup files.
Maybe I can

I think that these are part of the XFree86-libs package.
If you did not install X from rpm, then rpm will not find them, if you
did install from rpm, then your rpm database might have gotten hosed (not
an uncommon occurance with rpm).

Since you seem to actually have all of the dependencies, you could try
installing with the --nodeps parameter.

Re: [newbie] [Fwd: HP612A/lp0 not working]

Bill,

I found the answer to this HP printer thing. Ever since, I haven't had one
problem with my HP 930c, or 820Cxi. So, this should work for you. First, go
into DrakConf, and check out "Startup Services". Look thru the list for
"cups". While you're there, the next entry on the list should be "cups-lpd"
exactly as written. If it's not there, I can walk you thru the problem in no
time. Remember the following link.

ftp://fr.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake/updates/7.2/RPMS/ .

Log on to MSN Messenger (Use "everybuddy" in "Start - Networking - Instant
Messaging" ) and set me up in your "Contacts" list as [EMAIL PROTECTED]

OK, I've sent in some info b$ on this and nothing works. Let me try it
 again.
After numerous tries at setting up this printer nothing happens. Have
 tried
 PrinterDrake and linuxconf from root.

The most constant error message I receive is regarding lp0. Trying to
 run tunelp
"tunelp lp0 -s" gives me "no such file or directory".

Trying to print from a program I get "unable to open parallel port
 device file: no
 such device"

Checking thru dmesg I do not find any reference to lp0/lp1 etc., a
 printer or the
 parallel port.

I figured after disabling PlugPlay in my Bios and receiving a previous
 reply to
also reset my BIOS to ECP I did that using the AUTO option as well. HP
 also says
that it recommends setting this printer up on ECP. Still nothing.

Why isn't lp0 recognized or setup. Where can I find the setup files.
 Maybe I can
 manually load it?

I believe Mandrake 7.1 uses rpm 3.04, and Mandrake 7.2 uses rpm 4.
Upgrading tends to be very difficult as far as destabalizing the system.

Have you tried to use the posted ones? The whole point of rpm is that it
is platform independant, so it matters not whether it is Mandrake, Suse,
Red Hat or whatever. The only difference I can see is that these are
version 4 rpms and I suspect that Mandrake uses version 3 still. If this
is the case, then you might like to upgrade to version 4 of the rpm
package. See http://www.anvil.org/oms/rpm4/ for more details.

Oh and the filename used is not really relevant, it is a naming

[newbie] It's all LUCK, and mine was BAD

I put in a standard LM-7.2 setup from a 4 CD set.

First it took two weeks to figure out what was wrong in fstab so I could mount
the CDROM (and Mandrakesoft couldn't help), and finding a place to put
mem=56K so the shared video ram would work.

Still no one can tell me how to use a USB modem. The kernel supports it, my
modem is listed as a supported modem (linux-usb org), LM-7.2 put in a huge
amount of USB files and recognized two USB ports.

I still get a Aieee kernel panic, swapper no syncing error if I boot in
anything but graphical mode.

Corel Photo loads but won't run because Fonttastic is missing. The MAndrake
help page give directions to install it from the Install CD, but it is not on
the Install CD.

Corel WP-8 won't install, not from the Wbesite, not from two differenct CD's,
one of them a Mandrake 6.5 CD.

Windows may crash a lot, but at least it WORKS in between crashing. What good
is Linux not crashing, if you can't get anything working?

I'm new to Linux, but not to computers. I do tech support for modems. I can
follow instructions, but when it says (man 8 mount) to look in
/linux/fs/filesystems.c for a list of supported filesystems, when /linux/fs
directory doesn't exist how can you do anything???
When it tells you to load 'fonttastic rpms' from the Install CD and it
doesn't exist what can you do???

If you setup your "/home" directory to be on a seperate

Re: [newbie] It's all LUCK, and mine was BAD

2001-02-18 Thread petzhouse private

Welcome to linux. This is what linux is all about (stress.)

You can use an easy reset technique that lets you start again. (NOTE: A very
bad idea would be to get another distro. I have tried eight gazilion
(actually 3) and sadly this is the easiest to use...

The easy reset technique is as follows:

1. Delete your current Linux mandrake system and reinstall linux

2. Complain to the computer who makes your modem and ask about linux
support. A likely response is "We don't support it." (followed by the
representative hanging up on you.)

3. Get a new modem that says all over the box things like "Supports linux"
and "Tested with linux" and even "Comes with linux."

4. Find out that the company dosn't provide technical suport for using the
modem with linux.

5. Go to Mandrakeexperts.com and type in your question (As soon as you press
submit the site goes down. I have tried this numeras times.)

6. Have a nervious breakdown

I have gone through all these steps myself except for with a USB ethernet
card. (The "linux supported"(false advertising)was a non-USB one where you
have to break your back and open the computer.

Hope this helps.

I put in a standard LM-7.2 setup from a 4 CD set.

First it took two weeks to figure out what was wrong in fstab so I could
mount
the CDROM (and Mandrakesoft couldn't help), and finding a place to put
mem=56K so the shared video ram would work.

The MAndrake
help page give directions to install it from the Install CD, but it is not
on
the Install CD.

Corel WP-8 won't install, not from the Wbesite, not from two differenct
CD's,
one of them a Mandrake 6.5 CD.

Windows may crash a lot, but at least it WORKS in between crashing. What
good
is Linux not crashing, if you can't get anything working?

I'm new to Linux, but not to computers. I do tech support for modems. I can
follow instructions, but when it says (man 8 mount) to look in
/linux/fs/filesystems.c for a list of supported filesystems, when /linux/fs
directory doesn't exist how can you do anything???
When it tells you to load 'fonttastic rpms' from the Install CD and it
doesn't exist what can you do???

Re: [newbie] [Fwd: need mandrake RPMs]

No, both Mandrake 7.1 and 7.2 use RPM 3. Cooker (which should soon
become Mandrake 8.0) is based on RPM 4.

On Mon, 19 Feb 2001 09:34, Paul Rodrguez wrote:

Upgrading tends to be very difficult as far as destabalizing the
system. But rpm 3.05 might work. Also, compiling from source is an
 option.

Have you tried to use the posted ones? The whole point of rpm is
that it is platform independant, so it matters not whether it is
Mandrake, Suse, Red Hat or whatever. The only difference I can see
is that these are version 4 rpms and I suspect that Mandrake uses
version 3 still. If this is the case, then you might like to
upgrade to version 4 of the rpm package. See

Oh and the filename used is not really relevant, it is a naming

Re: [newbie] How to find packages?

2001-02-18 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

Have a look at http://www.rpmfind.net. You can use packages labelled
"Mandrake". Mandrake Cooker and Red Hat use RPM 4, which is
incompatible with Mandrake 7.2's RPM 3. To use these, you will have to
download and compile the source (.src.rpm) packages.

for headers for development with graphics libraries."

Where do I find these packages? Somewhere at the Mandrake FTP
site? Or are they included somewhere on the CD? If so, how do I
 find them?

The reason I need them is that I would like to use AfterStep,
and I have been told by the AfterStep people that I need to get
these two packages in order to be able to use AfterStep -- even
though I chose "everything" when I installed Mandrake.

If you setup your "/home" directory to be on a seperate

Very true but also a way to keep configuration-faults 'alive'

That is true if you have placed configuration information into your home
directory that directly affects your system hardware to work. It is my
impression that "/home" stores "personal" information and configuration.
I have been upgrading betas and what not for over fourteen months and I
haven't had any problems with sparing my "/home" directory. If anything,
that is the only directory that needs to be spared unless you plan to
switch the type of filesystem that it is under (ie ext2 converted to
Reiserfs), then you would need to backup.

Well, I finally have gotten the above referenced printer to work. I'm not
sure what the deal was. It began working after I uninstalled cups, install
lpr, uninstalled lpr, and couldn't reinstall cups from cd due to insane
depencies (?). So I downloaded a newer cups drivers from rpmfind (tho a
version lower than on the mandrake updates which also had unreal dependency
issues) and now it works, even in Word Perfect (which has given me fits in
the past). Abiword, Kword work also.

But with Star Office the *test* page prints correctly under local default,
but the typed page is printed without any top or left margin so it seems tho
the settings are set at 25.40 mm each.

Anyone experience this and was able to figure out why and how to fix it?

Face it--Linux is not for everybody. First, if you're going to install
linux be very careful about what hardware you put in your machine. USB
modems may work, but avoid the hassle of a "new" technology and get a
modem that is proven to work with the operating system. I use NT4.0 a
lot, and hardware is definitely easier to configure with linux. But,
NT4 is the MS equivalent of linux, and you wouldn't even THINK about
anything USB with 4.0, would you? By the way, the Mem= solution is
posted all over the internet (I had the same problem a couple of years
ago and found it in 15 minutes). And sometimes, the BEST learning
experience is to re-install and re-install until you get it right.
Especially when dealing with X-servers--and since you have a vidcard
built into the mobo--well, I see that as a problem right from the
get-go. Linux does not work well with with half-assed hardware
solutions.
The only card that I'll even consider when built into a mobo is scsi.
I've gotten soundcards and video cards to work, but they were a hassle
every time. Once you've made the same mistake a couple of times, then
it'll sink in (not a criticism, I've been there--many times).

Second, linux actually has several different versions, with the file
systems slightly different. Where one system (which the help file is
written for) says a file is may not be exactly correct. It's a failure
of the help file, and possible one of the "forking" difficulties that is
being talked about all over the linux community.

And finally, check the archives of this list for the problems associated
with the "fontastic install". I recall someone posting the solution to
this within the past month. I seem to recall someone posting a
difficulty with WP8 fairly recently, too--I didn't pay much attention
since I've installed it on 7.0 and 7.1 and then never used it.

Possibly, if you could emulate the compiler (using Wine or something).
Natively compiling it in Linux? Hell no, better write your own.

However, if you would like to port a Linux app to Windows, you could try
using DJGPP -- a dos implementation of the gnu compile tools. If it's just
a console app you can probably compile with no problems (it even fakes a lot
of Linux services). If the specific app has a GUI, you'll need to do a lot
of modifying (and get the library for Windows apps -- I can't recall its
name). Don't ask me how to do that, I only know ansi C++.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: [newbie] upgrade kernel?

for compile anything you want you'll need :
-- compiler gcc (and some libs for making dependences of rpm's packages)
  --- kernel -headers
-- kernel-source (from kernel you actually you have installed)
-- the source files you want to compile
-- another libs what depends on what the headers (from the source files you
want to compile) need.

You'll need to compile a new kernel when the new thing you want to add to is
not possible to insert as a module.
or when the new thing is essential during boot (for example filesystem suport
for ext2fs )

 I suggest...that you re-install
but this time...accept the "default" setting for
your monitor..until you can learn more about configuring
 your linux system.

when asked what method of install,, select RECOMMENDED

I guessed it had something to do with my complete shot in the dark
guess about my monitor specifications. I searched the mailing list
archives, and I was right, but I still can't guess the right
specifications. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 4Ne (it says that in big
letters on the front of my monitor), but the samsung site doesn't
awknowledge the existance of something this old. Original paper
documentation for this system was lost during the last ownership - I
  have never even seen it.

So, does anyone know of an -intelligent- way to go about guessing my
monitor specifications? And, is there a way to change the
configuration for the monitor without completely re-installing? An
hour between getting to guess makes guessing completely no fun.

  Thanks,

I'm new to Linux, but not to computers. I do tech support for modems. I can
follow instructions, but when it says (man 8 mount) to look in
/linux/fs/filesystems.c for a list of supported filesystems, when /linux/fs
directory doesn't exist how can you do anything???

Thinks about people who writes those docs, write thinking about one distribution
of linux not for all.
Every one distribution has its own directorys and pahs for files, but ... there is
something all of them has
usually in common : the name of the files. So that I'd try to find where is in my
system a file called
"filesystems.c" (if dont find anyone , try to find "filesystems"). And if not find
nothing , then try to go first
to a directory called "linux", if not try to watch if there is a subdirectory
called "linux". Watch if path begins with
"/" or not. (In the case you tells /linux/fs/fylesystems.c" I'm quite sure you
misspelled it and the correct path you
read is : "linux/fs/filesystems.c" (it doesn't begins by "/" so it is a relative
path) and its absolute path is :
"/usr/src/linux/fs/fylesystems.c"

When it tells you to load 'fonttastic rpms' from the Install CD and it
doesn't exist what can you do???

Get behind your monitor and look for serial numbers, part numbers, FCC id's
etc.

Then go to: http://driverguide.com/
There is/are search facilities there which _should_ point you in the right
direction.

You can also boot to your non-GUI console (At lilo prompt, type 'linux 3'
(without the quotes)) and run 'Xconfigurator' (again no quotes') and from
there try various monitor types, starting with the 'High Frequency SVGA'
and so on until you find something which fits.

But try the link above first - there are further links to sites where
monitor specs are listed.

Cheers

John
