[newbie-it] nautilus problema con mandrake 8.1

Salva poi in rtf. Tra l'altro da abiword puoi ottenere anche un file LaTeX, sia pure di cattiva qualità perché ad impostazione visiva e non strutturale. my twocents, g. -- E-Mail: Guido Milanese [EMAIL PROTECTED] Vocal Ensemble Ars Antiqua, Genova, Italia Homepage: http://www.arsantiqua.org + + + + + + NON NOBIS DOMINE + + + + + + + --

[newbie] Scrollback limits in Konsole
Hi everyone, I've recently installed LM8.1 and found it great, although I'm having a small problem with the scrollback limits in konsole in kde. If I ask it to list the contents of a folder containing a large number of files (@3000) it runs through them all ok but I can only scroll back through about 1000 of them. I've looked for info on this and haven't found much so far. I've had some success with the file:/etc/X11/Xresources by adjusting the 'XTerm*saveLines:' up to 5000, I can then scrollback ok in xterm. I would rather use konsole though and I've tried 'konsole*savelines:5000' without success. Neither of these work either when in console mode, ie without the Xserver running. Can anyone please help? ps; I've 256Mb Ram, 32Mb video Ram and everything else is std LM8.1 install. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Alternative is to as root add the same line to file etc/profile , in order to set PATH for every user ) (Don't forget the single '-signs!) used vim in terminal - [ name@localhost. name] $ vim .bashrc If you aren't familiar with vim I suppose you can open the file by right-clicking on it and chose apropriate text editor in konqueror. (you have to have show hidden files under show tagged. (or similar - I have a swedish version of MD8.0- don't know exact words) ) After this 'java' and 'javac' works fine. appletviewer also works, even if a lot of messages telling me it can't find some font directory pops up. RE: [newbie] Firewall Testing
OptOut's site is one of the best. Why do you believe that the ports are not open. It could well be that your Firewall itself is responding to services on those ports (such as http:80) which triggers these programs to tell you that services are available there. It's up to you to decide if you want to service requests on those ports directly from your firewall... -JMS |-Original Message- |From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Mark Annandale |Sent: Saturday, October 20, 2001 6:59 AM |To: Mandrake Newbie List |Subject: [newbie] Firewall Testing | | |Hi Guys | |Is there as site that you can use to test the effectiveness of |a firewall. |The ones I have looked at all seem to find open ports which I |think might be |a sales pitch ? | |Regards | |Mark A | | Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Getting started with PostgreSQL. I have never used a database program and know very little about this. I would like to install PostgreSQL on my 8.1 system, to begin learning how to work with it and develop a simple database. I have a number of questions as to how to get started. 1) Although PostgreSQL is not yet installed on my system, there is a user account that already seems to have been created on install by the name of postgres. Currently it has no passwd, and is only accessible through root. Is this the user account I should use to work with PostgreSQL, is that what this is there for? 2) Would it be more beneficial for me at this moment in time to install PostgreSQL from the Mandrake cds, or attempt an install from source? 3) I do not want to open myself to security issues. My database is for internal use only. Will installing PostgreSQL start any servers or potentially compromisable services by default? If so, how can I turn these off, or should I? I know these are a lot of questions to dump on the group, this sort of stuff is even before what is covered in the tutorials. Thanks, everybody. -Paul Rodríguez _ Do You Yahoo!? RE: [newbie] postgresql
Answer to one : Postgres is the user account that the postgres DBMS in run as a service. You can create a user account for yourself from the command line using createuser Synopsis createuser [options...] [username] Inputs -h, --host host Specifies the hostname of the machine on which the postmaster is running. If host begins with a slash, it is used as the directory for the unix domain socket. -p, --port port Specifies the Internet TCP/IP port or local Unix domain socket file extension onwhich the postmaster is listening for connections. -e, --echo Echo the queries that createdb generates and sends to the backend. -q, --quiet Do not display a response. -d, --createdb Allows the new user to create databases. -D, --no-createdb Forbids the new user to create databases. -a, --adduser Allows the new user to create other users. -A, --no-adduser Forbids the new user to create other users. to use this created user to access the DB use : psql [ options ] [ dbname [ user ] ] you will be prompted for the user password (I think, I have not had to access the Db from the CLI since I put up my Zope front end application ;-) ) Answer to two : I installed and ran it from extensiont cd of LM 8.0 and it ran ok. [newbie] Xautolock/Xscreensaver
Hi all, When I have either xautolock or xscreensaver running, my graphic desktop screws up bigtime. Can't describe the effect properly, it looks as if each time 10 lines of pixels from left to right are copied downwards about 7 times. Makes for a lousy screen to read. I disabled xautolock (which ran regularly with this happening) and replaced it with xscreensaver. That made things even worse. Dropping to text and firing up X would render the screen illegible directly, instead of waiting for a while. Since I have both programs switched off, the screen stays fine. Has anyone else ever heard of something like this with an Nvidia Geforce 32Mb? On the Diamond Speedstar 50 (also mdk 8.0) this never happened. I successfully upgraded from 7.2 to 8.1, so I would think that the smaller change from 8.0 to 8.1 would be even easier. Mandrake has a Software Manager that is similar to Debian's apt-get, but uses RPMs instead. You just point it at a nearby Mandrake mirror, and it will get you all the upgrades you need. b. Do the More than 2300 Open Source applications on 7 CDs available in the 9.0 PowerPack for 8.0 come with the Professional Pack for 8.0? Don't know. Many thanks in advance. Andrew Personal advice: Just go with 8.1, even if it means waiting a bit. I have heard enough stories of bugs in the 8.0 release, that I would not want to try it. In fact, I didn't -- I waited until 8.1 was available for download, and then upgraded straight to that. Aside from having to reinstall Opera (web browser), it went fine. IMHO you are better off going right to 8.1. You could purchase the cheap 3 disk version now and get cracking with it. A lot of things are simpler in 8.1 versus 8.0. Steve Gibson has passed on OptOut to another company so that it can be worked on full-time. I can't remember the company's name though. Steve's copped a lot of flak recently in response to his strong stand against MS's use of raw sockets in an unprotected consumer OS (WinXP). [newbie] external usb hard drive problems
Hi, I have an external USB hard drive made by LaCie, which worked out of the box, was automatically detected during installation, and is set up with scsi emulation. If I boot with the drive turned on, it is accessible as sda1 sda5 (it is partitioned into 2 FAT32 partitions). There are errors when it first tries to mount, saying that the 2 devices do not exist, but then (I think because it only turns on scsi emulation AFTER trying to mount the drives) it tries a few seconds later in the boot sequence and is successful. My problem is as follows: if the drive is NOT turned on at boot time, I can NOT mount either of the partitions on the drive, getting an error message saying that the devices do not exist. The kernel modules for usb scsi emulation are loaded (and I even tried removing and reinserting the modules which I think are needed), but it just does not work. I think (and please tell me if I am wrong or omitting something) the modules that are used are usb-scsi usb-ohci and usb-storage (I think, am not at home and doing this from memory). The other question I have, although not as bad because it still works, is the error message I get when the system boots (that I mentioned at the beginning) where the mounting of the usb drive's partitions fails and then a few seconds later succeeds. Is this because the system tries to mount the scsi drives (sda1 sda5) BEFORE the usb-scsi emulation is loaded? I DO hope that someone can help me. Happauge ATI-All in Wonder Video E-Mail Xtreme Etc.. I even picked up a REALLY nice board from Tigerdirect called the Videoemail Xtreme. For $9.00 after rebate. It includes a separate video camera. (Which btw works just fine as a direct video feed for my VCR, etc.) a remote control (which sadly doesn't work under Linux) FM, TV, Microphone, cables, etc. Only one little problem, the company that sold these boards is out of business. Since it is a fairly generic card, it works well with drivers from other companies though so I was not worried about getting software... For 9.00, what a deal! I've even used generic Taiwanesse BT848 boards in Linux with no trouble. -JMS |-Original Message- |From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Valerie Cheng |Sent: Saturday, October 20, 2001 12:29 PM |To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |Subject: [newbie] Tv-Tuner Recommendation/Suggestion | | |Hi, | |I want to get a Tv-Tuner for my box. [newbie] Upgrade from Professional 8.0 to 8.1?
Hi All I have the opportunity to purchase Official Mandrake 8.0 Boxed Set - Professional for a substantially lower price due to the imminent release of the official 8.1 version(s). I understand the above provides the following benefits (see blurb attachment below for those unfamiliar with the contents). It looks like a real bargain to me from what is being offered. BTW Unfortunately the 60 day phone support requires international calls (mutter !) from Australia. I am a (about to be) new to linux user with substantial computing experience since 1983 (CP/M, VMS, DOS, etc). Last years have been spent suffering with Bill's bugfest on workstations and servers. Hence the desire to change. Mandrake appears to be the best distro choice at this time for me. It is my intention (unless convinced otherwise!) to get this 8.0 pack , make it work and to then upgrade to v8.1 in my own time. Qns: a. I am not clear on how simple/complex the 8.1 from 8.0 upgrade will be (assuming i select the appropriate options from the 8.0 install such as the reiser file system, etc). Can i just point at a (say FTP) site using APT, download the required 8.1 upgrades, additional products, etc, allow for them to compile, etc? Are the products easily identifiable and installable on masse (as with Debian upgrades using DEB) or is it a real nightmare scenario to find, download, compile, update/reconfigure, etc? b. Do the More than 2300 Open Source applications on 7 CDs available in the 9.0 PowerPack for 8.0 come with the Professional Pack for 8.0? Many thanks in advance. Andrew - start blurb Designed for small and medium businesses, the Linux-Mandrake ProSuite Edition 8.0 has been specifically designed to include all the necessary tools and applications required for today's demanding computing environment. In addition to extended enterprise support, powerful tools make the ProSuite Edition ideal for setting up stable and secure servers. Receive 60 days of phone installation support (english, french or german) and 90 days free access to MandrakeExpert for web based support MandrakeExpert with priority response time. [newbie] messed up my KDE
I installed Mosfet's Liquid rendering engine (very cool, makes menus semi transparent ala macOSX). It works great except one feature was not available and never being satisfied I decided to experiment a bit. I launched the kde program kcmshell from a terminal just to see if I could find out anything. I suppose this is a sensitive program as now a lot of things in kde are all messed up. File associations are lost (I cant just open anything, I have to select the program to open it with), directories won't open, konqueror won't launch, and the kde control panel is completely empty. Not so good :) Is it simple to just remove all kde rpms and then reinstall them, or upgrade them? Is there any way to tell kde to just revert to all its defaults? I'm running Mandrake 8.1 with KDE 2.2.1. Matt who should learn to respect his boundaries :) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

It's very Maya4 like in that you keep on hand on the mouse and the other on the keyboard. While hard to initially remember, this is fantastic for speed work. You can normally model in Blender faster than say 3DSMax as a result. You certainly can't beat it for the price either... You know what, I just bought a used Actiontec PCI the other day and I get just about the same performance, without the system crashes. The deal was done for me when I got the HSF modem working, really. I'm happier, nevertheless and looking for some Windows user in my neighborhood to sell this to. Giving this advice has been criticized on the list before, but it's true: real modems are better, and will always be even if drivers are written for software modems. The performance is reliable and rock-solid, and driver support will always exist. It's time to give up on that half-baked device and start getting some sleep friend. (you have to have show hidden files under show tagged. (I don't mind for the moment) Next object for me is to get java to work in Netscape or prefably in Opera For Opera follow the instructions here http://www.opera.com/linux/docs/plugins/ BTW For Java you must use Opera Ver 5.05TP which is the version out as a 'Technology Preview' You get it from here : http://www.opera.com/download/download.cgi?custom=yeslanguage=5opsys=4version=23 Derek Any input? I also found if you run configure with --prefix=/usr then you can get the compiled version to work. The problem with the default compile is it sticks the binaries in the wrong directory. But anyway, the rpm is the easiest. It's at http://66.69.180.43:8080/download.php?op=viewdownloadcid=14 Towards the bottom. Unfortunately the translucent menu options do not become available with either the rpm or the compile. So for mandrake we are stuck with the default amount of transparency. But it's still very cool, highly recommended for kde users. Thanks for the tips everyone, I'll know what to nuke the next time I do something stupid with kde.
