[newbie-it] masterizzare

2002-02-10 Thread bosva

una delle poche cose che mi teneva ancora legato a uindos era la
masterizzazione.
mi sono messo davanti al pc e alla fine sono riuscito a capire come
funzionano programmi come eroaster o gcombust...naturalmente ho fatto
masterizzazione io usi)...o mi copiano solo parzialmente i files...c'è
qualcosa che mi sfugge?
forse i files sono di dimensioni troppo esagerate?

suggerimenti?

grazie, osva

[newbie] Where did my partition go?

2002-02-10 Thread Seedkum Aladeem

Hi,

I had an NT4 NTFS partition (~1.9 Gig) and a FAT32 partition (~1.9 Gig).
I used Harddrake to delete both of them and create a single FAT32
partition out of them (~3.8 Gig). When I looked at the properties of the
directory mount point using Konqueror I got a size of ~1.9 Gig!
Rebooting did not remove the discrepancy between Harddrake and
Konqueror. Harddrake showed no empty (unused) partition either.

I went and installed win2k on this new FAT32 partition (because B?ll
G?te? has a strangle hold on me, and not because I like any of those
!nice OSs). Win2k did the same thing. Explorer tells me the drive was
~1.9 Gig but the Disk Management tool says it is ~3.8 Gig. The disk
management tool showed no empty (unused) partition, like Harddrake.

Can someone please tell me what is going on here and how to fix it
please?

Umm, just to clear things up here... the so-called ICQ2000 protocol is
in actual fact Oscar, and that is the exact same prototol for AIM. So
when you suggest to load the plugin for ICQ you are technically doing
things the hard way. The fact is that it is now so far that in GAIM you
do not have to load any plugin for ICQ, as you just add an account using
the Oscar protocol, but with your ICQ number in the place of your Username.

The plugin should have been removed some time back as it is
misleading... and although it works (sometimes not too well)) it's
totally unneccesary.

Hope this helps,

Galeon is basically a GUI for Mozilla, with some features added. It is
directly linked to mozilla, and cannot run without it. They are not
interdependant, Galeon needs Mozilla, Mozilla does not require anything
from Galeon.

You cannot upgrade one without the other. That's actually the reason I
dropped Galeon altogether..too much fuss each time there was a new
release. You will have to uninstall Galeon, upgrade Mozilla and then
install the new Galeon..

Re: [newbie] Mozilla's bookmarks and adress book

2002-02-10 Thread Rodrigo

The place the files are in, depends on which version of windows you are
using. For example, in my win2000 they are placed at Documents and
Settings\Application Data\Mozilla...(here comes the profile directory),
but it is in a different directory if you are using win95/98/ME. Tip,
look up the Netscape/Mozilla release notes to find out in which
directory the property files are installed depending on the OS' version.
After that, you only have to copy the files addressbook, bookmarks, your
mail, etc to the right directory in your linux partition. Currently this
directory is .mozilla (a hidden one) located at your home directory.
This procedure worked for me, I use mdk8.1 and Netscape 6.2.1. Hope I
have helped you, good luck !

Hi Micahel,

First, to answer your questions:

Now Apache + PHP is loaded in /home/web/apache (root:root) with (rwx r-x r-x)

Tried changing (chown -R apache:apache /home/web) and (chown -R andre:andre

so much trouble with Apache and PHP!]

What permissions, user/group should Apache + PHP have? User is in Apache
group, also tried putting user in the Nobody group.

Where should I look? The error log indicate:

Well I know zilch about monitor power management but I don't
understand what you mean about trying to run emu-config. I'm

you explain what you mean by running the config.

Well, as far as I understand there are three executable files

one, IIRC. The script is calling emu-config to perform things. Now,
whenever I run the script or the emu-config file (e.g. with parameters
to enable rear speaker support) I get the error message mentioned

  again and tell you tomorrow.

OK, I checked it. For instance, an emu-config -? gives a
 SOUND_MIXER_PRIVATE3: Invalid argument
error, aswell as an emu-config -I or anything else. Running emu-script
does the same. What is wrong?

 TIA
 Roman

Oh yeah, I forgot about the tools... I found that digital doesn't work (my
centre speaker hisses) so I just use analog. Haven't really played about
with the emu10k1 tools. I also compiled the drivers from Creative Open
Source.

Did you install the standard emu-tools package that come with Mandrake or did
you download the tarball from Creative?

I haven't used the Mandrake one so I don't know anything about it.

If you compiled the drivers from source:
--- have you since upgraded your kernel? Sometimes a kernel upgrade requires
any software/drivers that you have compiled from source to be (re-)compiled
against the new kernel.
--- Your kernel must be compiled with loadable modules and soundcard support
and without any integrated emu10K1 soundcard drivers.
--- Plug'n'pray must be disabled in bios.
--- Did you edit the Makefile.config before compiling.
--- Try setting AC3PASSTHROUGH=no (if you haven't already) in the emu10k1.conf
file.

I haven't had any problems with it (well apart from digital not working
properly). You could check the FAQ at Creative. Umm... can't think of
anything else...

For a partition so small why on earth would you even use a JFS? If you
are never going to touch it make it ext2 and mount it ro.

journal a FS that is going to undergo many changes (basically an active
FS) when you mess with your kernel (or ar messing with something in
/boot) just run /bin/sync several times before running lilo. more
chances lilo screwing up then any fsck running on lilo...

and running fsck on a 32MB drive is very very fast... no need to
journal...

Just out of curiosity, why would you want a partition less than 32MB
anyway? My laptop has a small hard drive (4.5 GB), and even trying to
save space on it, I still made the /boot partition 39 MB. I think mmost
people set /boot to 50 MB or so, and that's generally the smallest
  partition on a Linux filesystem.

  Dave

The reason that you would want a partition smaller than 32 meg (the reason I
do, anyway) is because 32 megs is roughly 16 times more than what you need
for a boot partition. The files in the /boot dir don't even take up enough
 space for three regular floppies.

I see no reason why there should be a smallest size restriction on a
filesystem. It should be simply however small you choose to make it. (IF
your filesystem has no restrictions of that nature.) If ext3 gives you the
freedom to make the /boot mount partition whatever size you want it to be, I
certainly see no reason not to use that ability, or even ignore it.

While this is a matter of choice for me personally, I know there are many
space-critical situations out there that call for saving every meg that you
 can.

Hanan, an addition : I guess you want a convenient way to
create html-pages, right ?
If so, you already have several options installed in LM 8.1
(download edition).

1. The best is a simple text-editor, assuming you know
html-syntax, but that's not the case, eh ?
2. The worst is M$ Front Page , creating all sorts of
non-standard tags and making you look like a fool on the
web. But you are lucky : you don't have it !
3. The next-best is right at your hand : click K --
Networking -- www -- Quanta Plus. It lets you view the
result immidiately after editing without saving anything.
(You need to run KDE).
4. Almost as good is : click K -- Networking -- www --
Bluefish. (Nifty gadget : creates thumbnails on-the-fly).
5. An easy wysiwyg-one, although a bit slow, is Netscape
Composer. (Or Mozilla - even slower).
6. The easyest - and most front page like : Star Office,
if you have it. Otherwise download Open Office. (Beware,
it's a huge download, about 80 MB).(I guess you can get it
on CD for a reasonable price).

Finally Hanan, when you have uploaded your newly created
pages to the web, remember to check your syntax at
http://validator.w3.org
That way, you'll be respected as a real pro on the web !

 The modem I have is a 3Com 56K V.90 Mini PCI Modem.

Many PCI modems do not work in Linux because they are Winmodems,
relying on software drivers to do most of the work. Linux drivers are
available for _some_ chipsets of this type.

The fact that a modem is PCI does not automatically mean it is a
windmodem, although probably the majority are. I have a PCI 3Com/USR
internal modem that is hardware based and works great in Linux. Read
the box or the product description carefully.

Your best bet for easy, trouble-free modem setup is an external model
that connects to your serial port.

Re: [newbie] backup app for LM 8.0

2002-02-10 Thread Lyvim Xaphir

Hey, I was reading an article in Linux Journal and I thought about your
problem. Evidently, this problem has already been addressed by someone else,
and much more elegantly also. This was an article in the Dec 2001 issue of
LJ, the article was titled Guard Against Data Loss with Mondo Rescue.

Mondo is the app's name, and it's got some interesting features. Check this
out:

1)Automatically saves either to ISO images on the hard drive or to a CDRW
drive directly.

2) Capable of cloning an installation of Linux

3) Backs up a filesystem running on one FS and restores it to another FS type

4) Restructure partitions, e.g., shrinking/enlarging, reassign devices, add
hard drives BEFORE you partition and format your drives! Restores your data
and amends /etc/lilo.conf and /etc/fstab accordingly !!

5) Will even back up Windows systems, including the boot sectors!

6) Also will verify the integrity of your existing system with the use of a
previous backup.

It's main strength seems to be it's ability to handle backup and rewriting of
hard drive boot sectors. Check this out:

www.microwerks.net/~hugo

Good luck. I'm going to download it as well. Even if it's 1/4 as good as
this article said, it's going to be worth it!

one more thing... why do I have the feeling that everybody is trying to
sned me the message: hey ... using a WYSIWYG app is not considered a good
 thing

The problem is that most WYSIWYG editors don't know how to code as well as
the average human. HTML may be simpler than some languages out there but that
doesn't mean it doesn't have its complexities. Having 47 different font tag
changes in a document isn't good coding practice, but it's what I end up with
after FrontPage gets ahold of my average page. (Well, they weren't there
before). The computer may not understand that I really DO want to keep the
same font throughout the same page. That's why I like Quanta - I can code the
way I want, then see it immediately (though admittedly it doesn't do too well
with Server Side Includes, but that's what Konq is for).

Style sheets are also a Good Thing, though not all older browsers use them
well. Another good link is the Backward Compatability Viewer at
http://www.delorie.com/web/wpbcv.html - this lets you see your webpage under
virtually any still-used browser out there.

Heck, if you want mail me off the list and I'll send you my bookmarks for
HTML editing. It took me about 4 days of crash course studying to learn most
of the new tricks, and I hadn't touched HTML since about version 2.0.

The three books I have on my desk, in addition to the websites, are:
QUE's Special Edition Using HTML 4, Fifth Edition (probably not the most
recent, but it's what the library had), by Molly E. Holzschlag. This one is
good for beginner to midrange resources, sort of like a readable HTML bible.
Effective Web Design, Second Edition, by Ann Navarro. This one covers the
topic of XHTML/XML fairly well.
JavaScript for the World Wide Web, 3rd Edition, by Tom Negrino and Dori
Smith. I realize not everyone uses JavaScript but I found the book pretty
well written.

Hope that helps,
David R

Hi Marcia,

Basically, all you have to do is unpack the tar ball tar -zxvf
somefile.tar.gz then run the patch. I believe it is called runme.pl
and it will ask you if you want the patches applied. You will then have
to run vmware-config.pl again and then you should be all set. By the
way, you should have VMware installed prior to running the patch. I hope
this helps.

Hanan, that's because using a WYSIWYG-editor is WEB-Cockney
! - It labels you as an illaterate fool ! - Of course,
that's not your fault, but no WYSIWYG-editor - so far -
complies to WWW-standards. Most of them - especially M$
Front Page - assumes that the reader of the pages so created
uses EXACTLY the same browser, i.e. M$ Internet Explorer.
In fact, that's a perversion of the original idea, created
by Tim
Berners-Lee at CERN about 1995 : a simple
mark-up-language, readable by all and everyone owning a
simple browser, for instance Mosaic. During the first
years, several improved browsers appeared, i.e. Netscape,
but eventually commercialazition entered the scene :
Micro$oft ! - The result : fragmentation, imcompatibilities,
arrogance and merciless rip-off of naive costumers prevails.

Now Hanan, why on earth use a mediocre WYSIWYG-editor when
it's so simple to write real HTML ?
If you have something to tell the world, use the simplest
possible editor and reach everyone !

Not very much. In fact, Mozilla doesn't need Galeon at all. Galeon is only one
of many browsers that embed Gecko as a rendering engine. It uses GTK+ to do the
embedding. Chris Blizzard (a Red hat developer employed to work on Mozilla) is
currently working on porting it to GTK2. I have seen him post on the
galeon-devel mailing list, so there is some co-operation and communication
between the Mozilla and Galeon projects.

How to upgrade one without breaking the other ?

Galeon builds are written for a particular version of Mozilla, usually the most
recent Mozilla release available at the time. You really should use the Mozilla
version that is recommended for your version of Galeon. This isn't as bad as it
sounds, because support is usually added for a new Mozilla version within a few

If you use the iMesh file sharing program, you can do a search for

Hi Chuck,

To run a Windows application using WINE, be it Codeweavers or not, type:

wine /path/to/file.exe

I hope this helps.

Hey, there is one more thing you could check. Something like this used to
happen to me when i ran firestarter on KDE startup...

when the machine starts getting slow, run KPM, i'm pretty sure you will find
one single process taking 98% of the CPU cycles. ( in my case it was a
mysterious second instance of firestarter appearing from nowhere ) can you
check that out?

see ya :o)

I finished up buying Partition magic after surfing the boards

on that revealed a lot of disappointed customers.

I am sure there must be a better way but I don't know it! I can
now mount my windows ntfs partition in linux. Works great.

RE: [newbie] bastille and gateway

2002-02-10 Thread Jeroen v.d. Westelaken

Hi,

Bastille is a collection of perl scrits that configure your iptabels. These
iptables are realy doing the job, filtering incomming and outgoing data
according to the rules the Bastille scripts put in.
At startup the Bastille scripts are started, but you need also start
iptables at boot.

You can configure the Bastille settings manualy in the file
/etc/Bastille/bastille-firewall.cfg and you can start/stop/restart
Bastille and iptables with the command /etc/rc.d/init.d/bastille-firewall
[start|stop|restart]. You can check the settings of the iptables with the
command iptables -L.

Good luck,

Jeroen v.d. Westelaken

Hi, when I set up my gateway via drakgw (Mandrake Control Center) it
seems to do something funky with bastille? What exactly is happening,
is bastille turned off when drakgw starts working? How do I get them to
play nice?
