Thanks, Sevatio If you're having problems with the automount, why not just manually mount the CD's and try it that way - seems a bit of a tough go to jump through all those hoops to get files onto yer drive... I know of the manual way of doing it in a text environment via superuser login. Is there another more friendly and short way of manually mounting this? I'm thinking in terms of ease of use for the average windows user that I setup linux boxes for. I'm really surprised that after all these versions, Mandrake still hasn't quite figured this out. [newbie] RE: The MD Alternative to W2K and MacOS9.2 (a little OT)
Check out Creator (http://www.creatorsoftware.com/). When I worked for them they were exclusively Macintosh and were working on Windows and Unix versions. I know the Windows version is shipping and I know the Unix version is client/server, not standalone workstation like the Mac and Win stuff is. It's a solid product which, to it's loyal user base, beats Quark and Indesign hands down. There is also a user group at http://www.wacondatrader.com/creator/ which is not affiliated with the company but will give you an idea of the problems the production people face. Be aware that the majority of the long term users are Mac people and will have little experience with the Unix product. I know several of the programmers monitor the list though. I had this problem some ages ago when I was on a dialup, but it's been quite a while. Try the following. When kppp connects, note the ip address. Then from a root command prompt do route add default gw your.isp.dynamic.ip ppp0 In my case (in case you're interested) the final qualifier on my workstation here is eth0 instead of ppp0. If you were on a local lan attempting to connect to a gateway, you'd use the same route command line as above but just changing the device. This is a manual fix, a way to test. It is sad to realize that there are millions and millions of people that think the MS solution is the "end all" solution - until they see something different. Like buying a Volvo station wagon - ya'd never think about it until you get in an accident with the kids in the car - THEN you're buying the Volvo station wagon...(bad analogy, but I though it was cool). Think of it this way: Windows users are like robots - when they hunger, they walk into Maccas and order a meal - it is delivered - they eat it. Never once thinking about how shitty the meal is, or what the meal is lacking. When they're shown that they can cook a steak and potatoes and veggies and make a salad and eat THAT instead - it just takes the time to make it - all of a sudden their world changes...they have something more fulfilling and they've cooked it themselves...all the while wondering why in the hell they were eatting Maccas this whole time... -- Thu Dec 26 06:40:00 EST 2002 6:40am up 21:25, 5 users, load average: 0.14, 0.20, 0.20 -- |____ | kühn media australia| | / ,, /| |'-. | http://kma.0catch.com | | .\__/ || | | |=| | _ / `._ \|_|_.-' | stephen kühn| | | / \__.`=._) (_ | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | |/ ._/ |"| | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]| | |'. `\ | | |icq: 5483808 | | ;"""/ / | | | | | smk ) /_/| |.---.| | mobile: 0410-728-389| | ' `-`' " " | Berkeley, New South Wales, AU | -- * linux user:267497 * RH 7.3+ * PC/Mac/Linux/Networking/Consulting Coralament*Best Grötens*Liebe Grüße*Best Regards*Elkorajn Salutojn MS-DOS must die! Are there problems with the automount on LM9.0? It's been very inconsistent when I'm trying to transfer data from CDs onto my HD. [newbie] OT The Outcome of Reloading Windows
So I formatted, and got rid of windows 2000, Loaded Windows 98, And reinstalled my boot loader. Here is the tale of woe : Windows 98 required too many reboots to count. It took me over 2 hours to load the O.S., install the video driver, the sound card driver, antivirus ,firewall, camera software, and cdr software. I have not yet installed Office, Winzip, or anything else, ( At this point I'm not sure I'll even bother ). Installing and configuring Mandrake with all the bells and whistles, with OO, and KOffice, and everything else took about 1 hour, Maybe slightly longer but not much, as I recall. Windows boot up is slw. The whole thing is cumbersome and , well ehh, ( We've only been running Mandrake full time for about 5-6 months now ). Anyway, After doing all of this ( rebooting between everything of course ), On the final reboot the damn thing goes into a ... BSOD. HaHaHaHaHa. I can't believe that at one time this was the best we could do. What the hell were we thinking ? It took me about 10 minutes to reload lilo ( I did an upgrade and picked up a couple packages ), and get back to where we belong. Now I'm thinking about dual booting something real with Mandrake, or repartitioning and giving all 40 gigs to Mandrake, because THAT just hurt. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? No reloads. Dig this: Take the Win98 boot disk and boot with it - but don't let it install Windows just yet, use FDISK to change the ACTIVE PARTITION to the partition that had Win2k on it (make sure you remember which partition was originally set active for your MDK boot!). After you set the partition to ACTIVE, reboot - STILL with the Win98 disk in. Once again, don't load Windows, but use FDISK to delete then recreate the Win2k partition so that it is not a Win98 VFAT partition. Don't worry about setting it as active - let it - so that you can complete the Win98 install without problems. Once the partition is recreated, format the partiton for Win98. Now continue with your Win98 installation. After the installation is done (and you're happy with it's stability - or instability as the case may be), boot up once more with the Win98 boot disk, and use FDISK to set the ACTIVE PARTITION back to the MDK boot partition (probably the smallest partiton on the drive - shown as a NON-DOS partition - depending on how y'all partitioned it). Reboot - and you should now see your MDK boot screen. Login to MDK as you normally would - once logged in, open up a term and run lilo at the prompt - it will rebuild/readd the Windows partition to your boot menu. You're done. -- Thu Dec 26 06:15:01 EST 2002 6:15am up 21:00, 5 users, load average: 0.10, 0.25, 0.32 -- |____ | kühn media australia| | / ,, /| |'-. | http://kma.0catch.com | | .\__/ || | | |=| | _ / `._ \|_|_.-' | stephen kühn| | | / \__.`=._) (_ | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | |/ ._/ |"| | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]| | |'. `\ | | |icq: 5483808 | | ;"""/ / | | | | | smk ) /_/| |.---.| | mobile: 0410-728-389| | ' `-`' " " | Berkeley, New South Wales, AU | -- * linux user:267497 * RH 7.3+ * PC/Mac/Linux/Networking/Consulting Coralament*Best Grötens*Liebe Grüße*Best Regards*Elkorajn Salutojn What the hell is it good for? -- Robert Lloyd (engineer of the Advanced Computing Systems Division of IBM), to colleagues who insisted that the microprocessor was the wave of the future, c. 1968 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? When they do so, many like me would not hesitate to trash their windows and enter the linux world. Until then i can't get rid of my windows, permanently.. It's free and be used like coreldraw or freehand, althought it's no match for neither. cheers, filipe Yes Filipe, but I find Gimp very capable as a Photoshop replacement. I would just like to be able to drag open images from an image viewer straight into Gimp - something that is easy to do under W2K. It's probably possible under MD, but I haven't found the light yet. The main one I am concerned about is that it states there is a conflict between ipchains and iptables - which I would have thought when I installed MD 9.0, it would have stated something about those two do not go together. I did not install either ipchains or iptables -after- installing 9.0, I installed them during the main installation. If there was a conflict, shouldn't it have caught it then? I understand iptables are the most current set of firewall control varibles, and ipchains is older...so I should be able to uninstall ipchains - right? My goal is to end up configuring apt-get to automatically keep my system up to date, but before I set it up as such (if I can? LOL) I want to get my system in tip top shape. The system I am referring to here is my personal p.c. - the network itself is protected on the internet router/firewall computerwhich I think is also running ipchains along side iptables. I understand there may not really be a need to run a firewall on my p.c. - just taking the stance of it doesn't hurt to have a main firewall/router protecting the network, and on all Windoze p.c.'s within the network are running Zone Alarm as back up protection...thus I have installed (but never really changed any configuration) iptables and ipchains on my mandrake p.c. Excuse me if I give a little too much info, never sure what exactly is needed so I blab blab blab LOL TIA Steve -- Linux user #280097 Machine #162480 http://counter.li.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] howto configure synaptic apt-get to run as user?
Merry Christmas list members, I am running Fluxbox windowmanager with Roxfiler filemanager (using a panel launcher for common apps) and my question is, how can I configure something like synaptic apt-get to run from a icon on the panel as a user? Apt-get requires root priv's to run. The icon I have now just attempts to run /usr/sbin/synaptic, which I receive a error msg stating only root can run synaptic. MandrakeUpdate requires root priv's for example, and when it is run as a user, it prompts me for the root password. Is there a script (which I wouldn't know how to create) or a link or... which I could do in order for synaptic to run? I checked my menus to see what was configured for synaptic to run, and it shows for the command to run as; kdesu /user/sbin/synaptic which does not work for the icon I created on my panel. TIA for any help or ideas Steve -- Linux user #280097 Machine #162480 http://counter.li.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Hi, To enable DCC through a firewall, I did the following: Configure Xchat to use 2 ports (say 1087 and 1088) for dcc. You can use more, but not less. Configure my firewall to allow 2 ports for dcc. ~brandon -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of magnet Sent: Wednesday, December 25, 2002 5:34 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] blocked ports? Hi all, Im having a few problems here atm after installing gshield. It's working fine but I seem to be unable to send/receive dcc sends using xchat on IRC. Does anyone know the fix for this? It turned out my OO problem seems to be a problem with the way it calls lpr - Mozilla does the same. LyX and Kwrite work fine for a normal user, but OO and Moz will still only print as root. Yes, I've tried every combination of usb slots, mount -a and rebooting with everything switched on, all without success. The output of usb-view and MCC Hardware List seem to imply that the camera is recognised as being a mass storage device, but not really sure what type, so that no sdx node is being formed. Consequently I can't mount it at all. I tried creating a node sdb, as someone suggested, but it doesn't help. Anne Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? That brings back memories. I didn't use windows at all in those days, but used to use Desqview to run two copies of my Sage accounts program, so that I could work in the accounting section but get quick lookups in the stock section.
