Now I have tried, I can login, but I do not get the commandline, I am thinking about
reinstalling but I am not really in a mood to do it, I can get into Xfce without a
problem so I can work with those programs.

I have an Asus A7V133c m/b w/ an Athlon T-bird 1.3. It's not an OEM
board. The other drives I have are /dev/hda some old shitty cd-rom,
/dev/hdg a maxtor 30 gig running at ATA-100, /dev/hde a quantam 30 gig
ATA-100. You think being less than 2 years old kernel support would have
gone beyond my 12X drive? I've gotten some pretty old, crappy hardware
working w/ new kernels (IDE controller cards and whatnot). I wasn't
using windows as a "hey it works in here why not linux", just that if it
was something physically wrong (i.e. not a driver/config problem) it
should show up every time I use the drive regardless of OS. here is the
output of the hdparm command.

/dev/hdc:

If you re-read my info it states that due to legal issues you can not
DL/install certain libaries, that are needed by some programs, via GURPMI.
Pbone.net is great for this...they allow US to DL DMCA-illegal libraries.

Creative doesn't say much about who makes it. They re-badge
various sources. Windoze is not a recommendation for hardware to work
on better OS's. 'Works great with Windoze' is most often a derogatory
statement about hardware. MOF, that's one explaination I can think of
at the moment. Windoze kernels are a joke, Deb's are usually old
fashioned yesterday's stuff. Probly older than the kernel you had
with 8.2. Could be your hardware is fallin behind current Linux

causing eratic signals over IDE. That could account for both slow
transfer rates and high cpu usage. At two years old and unknown
sources, that becomes a realistic explaination, specially if the
transport mechanism was actually made by Ricoh. Have you tried

[newbie] From DHCP to static and back

2003-02-12 Thread Adolfo Bello
My default setup is to get TCP/IP settings from a DHCP server.

Quite often I have to change this setting to static when moving to
another network.

What I am now doing is releasing DHCP settings with "dhcpcd -k". When I
want to go back to the DHCP setting I enter "dhcpcd -n" and everything
works fine.

However (why always a however?), I have noticed that, according to "ps
-ax", instead of one dhcpcd process I have two processes in memory: the
original one and the one with the command line "dhcpcd -n".

Is this normal? Or is there something I am doing wrong or missing?

US DMCA, and Europe and other parts of the world have their own

Hi, I'm using 9.0, my drive is a Creative Labs 12/10/32 on /dev/hdc.I've
turned DMA on for this drive by using hdparm and creating a harddiskhdc
file. However anytime the drive is accessed my CPU usage shoots up to
around 75% (normally I can't hardly get it past 10%) which shouldn't
happen if its using DMA. I know for a fact the drive supports DMA as
I've had it about 2 years. There isn't a problem with the drive either
as I booted into windows and burned a CD with the CPU usage never going
above 2%. I don't recall having this problem when I had 8.2 installed.
I've also used this drive w/ Debian and it worked fine in there.

It's not just the ready-made one's with this problem. I've found that MANY
all-in-one's either don't have the option to disable the onboard video, or if
even if they have the option, it doesnt work. I have a ASUS sp97v board with
a dead onboard vga and a PCI vga card I disabled the onboard card using a
jumper on the motherboard to do so, and yet X still detects the card and
attempts to use it, however the memory is freed and everything works if I
tell X to not use that card.
He should look on the board, near the onboard VGA connector, to see if there
is a jumper to disable the onboard stuff.. It will allow the board to give up
it's shared vga memory, and might even actually disable the onboard video
like it's supposed to.

that's an internal IRC oper command i believe. Once you've defined yourself as oper

well it was an internal command.

What you touched on is really a bios deficiency in many ready made
computers. The larger problem is making any changes to ready mades.
The computer left the factory with the bare minimums to support the
original hardware configuration, design, and OS.

Adding in hardware later probly won't go over to well, and changing
the OS from Windoze often doesn't either.

What Mandrake version?, do you have 'hdparm' installed? What
hardware? Is your cdrw /dev/hdc? I'll be usin that as an example.

If it's not, install hdparm, then type (as root) 'hdparm -v /dev/hdc'
in a terminal and you should see somethin like this

 tom# hdparm -v /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc:
 HDIO_GET_MULTCOUNT failed: Invalid argument
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq=  1 (on)
 using_dma=  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly =  0 (off)
 readahead=  8 (on)
 HDIO_GETGEO failed: Invalid argument

Don't worry about "failed: Invalid argument", cd drives don't
support these parameters. What you're concerned about is
'using_dma=1 (on)'If it's '=0' , then read on, if it's =1, dma is
already enabled and you've got some other problem.

If it's Mandrake 9.0 or later (I don't remember for 8.x), as root
in a terminal,

cd /etc/sysconfig/

then use an editor to uncomment this line in the 'harddisks' file
USE_DMA=1 (IOW's remove the # in front of that line and save the
   edited file). Then,

cp harddisks harddiskhdc

If you also have a cdrom on /hdd

cp harddisks harddiskhdd

You can reboot but you don't need to. You can start dma on your
cdrw for this uptime, by (as root) runnin 'hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc'
(and the same for /hdd if you have one)
Future boots will have dma enabled by the harddisk* files.

Now for the disclaimer: Some cdroms don't suport dma, or don't do
it very well at all. If this is the situation the problem can go all
the way back to the motherboard and/or power supply being the
culprit(s). Afterall, the warning is right there in the harddisks
file

# Set this to 1 to enable DMA. This might cause some
# data corruption on certain chipset / hard drive
# combinations. This is used with the "-d" option
USE_DMA=1

But you'll probly be OK ;)

This is the same suggestion I was about to make.Use DHCP to assign the
machines an IP address, but force the win2k bootup to be a manually set IP,
something like 192.168.1.254 with the default gateway left blank Then, as
Adolfo states, the win2k machine won't know how to get outside it's current
subnet, and since the other machines will be assigned IPs AND default
gateways via the router (read: box with 2 nics or real router) they WILL be
able to get out of the subnet and onto the internet.

Clarification: I included RedHat because of their inclusion of copyrighted
graphics and logos that they use to prevent redistribution of their distro.
You will notice that places liek CheapBytes no longer sell RedHat but a
distro called Pink Tie, which is RedHat with the offending material removed.

Hi Ryan, it is really easy. For some reason, the 9.0 startup scripts turn dma
off for optical drives. For this instruction, I will assume your cd-burner
is /dev/hdc scsi emulated as /dev/scd0. For your machine, replce the hdc
with whatever ata channel your burner is on.

Go into the directory /etc/sysconfig and you will see a file called harddisks.
Copy this file as root to a file called harddiskhdc.

cp harddisks harddiskhdc

Edit the new file with your favorit text editor (mines nano) and uncomment the
line that says '# USE_DMA=1' so it looks like this

USE_DMA=1

and save the file. Since dma is off, it is very likely that hdparm is already
installed on your system, but to doublecheck, type

rpm -qa | grep -i hdparm

if you get no output, you need to install hdparm, so type

urpmi hdparm, and follow the instructions.

Now when yopu boot up, DMA will be turned back on.

Another method would be to remove hdparm completely, which will prevent it
from being turned off to begin with. The problem with this approach is that
you won't be able to use hdparm to tune your hard drives.

urpme hdparm

to learn more about hdparm, type man hdparm.

[newbie] HP Computers

2003-02-12 Thread John S. Chalice
Hey there..

It looks like I found my problem that I've been having for awhile. This
may be what is stumping many of you users of HP computers who decided
you wanted linux, and a better video card.

Since my computer (HP Pavilion 7935) came with onboard video.. and not
its own card, when I tried configuring my computer for linux, I ended up
selecting 'configure both heads independently'.. referring to (Head 1):
My onboard display adapter.. and (Head 2): my other video card. When I
did this, my computer was complaining (though I only found this out
after logging the startx output messages) because when you put in a new
video card, the onboard video disables itself entirely, and yet linux
was trying to use the onboard video. This also leaves me with 16MB of
set-apart RAM I can't get my hands on, but.. that's not too big of a deal.

Anyway.. I just thought this might help some people who don't know why
their HP computer doesn't like linux. :)

I have put in a GeForce4 MX 440-SE (PCI) and it seems to be working fine
now.

Hope this helps some of you :)

Sincerely,

John S. Chalice

Sorry, I forgot about the Win98 setup.

Why don't you leave Win98 to get its settings using DHCP? Do you have
any reason to force this to have a predefined IP?

I would take note of settings given by DHCP and set something alike
using a static setup.

Good luck.

Is this problem with Konsole? I played around a bit in one, opening
multiple sessions in it and did a couple of things like opening mc in one
session, opening vi in another, etc i went to session/quit and a pop
up informed me i still had multiple sessions open ... am i sure i want to
quit? i selected yes and the whole thing closed. Or is it a different
terminal you're using?
(Close Session only closed one tab at a time btw but even when i was down
to the first tab it still closed)

jerry

Well AFAIK, its Konsole. Its the term that sits by the big K in KDE on the
panel bar (Far left). Most of the terms I've tried *admittedly I have only
tried 2 or 3* work the way they are supposed to. Konsole OTOH won't let me
close the term in any way except by typing "exit" at the CLI. Its very
weird. I've never had this type of behaviour happen before either. Now if
it were just my comp that did this, I'd just think its a me being a ditz
who's quite stoned on Demorol (Or Dumberol as my b/f is fond of pointing
out...). However so far it seems to affect his install too. Again both of
our Linuces are stock installations (Mine has a few updates on it for
various programs but that shouldn't make any difference...?).

Its more annoying than anything.

Yes, I believe Anne and a few others had the same comments. I
dunno why, it's Sun's java packaged by Mandrake to put all the files

If i am going to install something i open the GUI, if the requirements arent
met i use CLI rpm to check..."rpm -qa|grep package-name". If its not there
and the GUI doesnt have access to getting the rpm then i DL it from
http://rpm.pbone.net/ or http://rpmfind.net and then install the rpm via CLI
rpm. Its a hassle. Oh well...

If you want to open the software removal persona from a term Lyvim just type:

rpmdrake-remove

in the term and it'll open for you.

Choose "maximum information". If it is not there as button (I think
that is only there in Cooker), use the context menu (press right mouse
button while in the right side of the window.

Aside from the example above, you can use rpm for that, presumed you
know a server holding the file, e.g.

  rpm -qlp
http://mandrake.secsup.org/Mandrake/9.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/Apache-ASP-2.37-3mdk.noarch.rpm

Learned that myself only this week. :-)

Well, these two lists are not the only place that this distro is discussed.
There are reviews all over the net, and the old MandrakeUser.org, the new
mandrakeusers.org, pclinuxonline, a.o.l.m, etc. And I am also referring to
discussions I have had privately with people. If you limit your review to
these two ML's, you don't get the whole picture. In fact, several others
have already posted in this thread about their satisfaction with the program
in question. So you cannot say there is no support for it either.

Yes, it is an exclusion by policy, and the codebase for the old rpmdrake
violated current development policies for the distro.

I can only suggest to you that if you feel that strongly about the ui of
rpmdrake, get in touch with the rpmdrake team and help create a better ui. I
don't think any bitching or discussion, especially on this list, is going to
get it back, and I am simply being practical about it

Those two is all you need. "kill -s TERM" will ask the process to
terminate (the process may refuse), "kill -s KILL" forcefully tries to
kill the process (.

If it doesn't terminate after a KILL signal, there is no way to do
it. Usually it means that your kernel got a hickup which shouldn't
normally happen. There are cases where the kernel cannot remove a
process due to its internal state[1], but I only encountered these with
either broken kernels (i.e. an update fixed it) or with broken
hardware.

> signals like sigrtmin+2 even were [and man kill does not say])

man 7 signal

(that's mentioned in "man kill")

> not wanting to get mucking around too much with something i didn't

Correct. If it does not, there is nothing a mere user (or admin) can
do about it.

HTH,

Benjamin.

[1] AFAIK, a killed process which currently happens to be somewhere in
the "kernel space", will not terminate until it jumped back to
user space. So one explanation for such an unkillable process is
that it got stuck in the kernel space somehow.

Well, I've done searches within the newbie and expert lists for
"rpmdrake" and I see almost no vocality on a positive note for rpmdrake
2.1. This isn't from memory, this is from a hard search for "rpmdrake"

naysayers convinced in the discussions on the expert list, may they come

Perhaps or perhaps not; I think it varies with the situation. Be that
as it may, the point was "favorable reaction", and not " the statistical
weight of dissenters". On the point in question I maintain that there
are historically almost no peeps pushing rpmdrake 2.1 according to the

I happen to agree with you here. I also think that this UI should have
been put to a vote before it was changed; it would have saved much
debate and the end product would have been better.

1) The customers pay the company that pays for the development.

2) Wether the decision was arbitrary or not depends largely on the
average joe's leverage in the decision, which I maintain was not alot.

What it was put in place for originally has absolutely no relation to
what it has evolved to and is being used for now. Be that as it may,
basically you are saying that the Mandrake users should not determine
the direction of the Mandrake tools UI.

> No matter how many people vote to put nVidia drivers in the

That debate concerns licensing issues and has nothing to do with
rpmdrake, which btw is a Mandrakesoft creation and is already included
in the distro, where the Nvidia drivers are *not*.

Seriously though, the major flaw to me of the new rpmdrake is documentation,

For me, it's absurd to keep all four open. I keep my box up-to-date
all the time and only need one (install). And from time to time, but
far less often, I also need to start uninstall.

I wonder how often you change your sources, if you need to keep it
open...

The only time I find the new scheme lacking is when I try to find out
about the state of a package without knowing it's name (I try
searching and cannot be sure whether I mistyped the name of it is not
in the installed list).

That's because they are four different programs. You don't expect to
find "rmdir" when you type "mkdir --help" do you?

What's wrong with using the GUI (mcc) to start a GUI-program? Or
really using the CLI, if you start doing so (using urpmi instead of
rpmdrake)?

I doubt that. There are technical reasons why it cannot be brought
back with reasonable effort. Read the cooker list archives for why.

this was changed in 9.0 and I was quite disappointed it with it too, ttytt.
the most important feature of 8.2's rpmdrake was that you could see... right there in
front of you... what files it would put where if you installed it. with rpmdrake in
9.0 it's not there. I can't figure out HOW on EARTH to tell WHAT FILES a package
installs so some rpms get installed and i end up NEVER USING them because I have no
idea what it names the executable or where it puts it. perhaps there's a CL command
to do this but manpages make my brain numb and i give up because it's like someone's
speaking martian at me.
so, since rpmdrake's become enigmatic, anyone know what command used to query a
package BEFORE istallation to list every file it's going to install (and where) so i
could, for example, out the output to a text file and read it first?

(ie command [option] [pakcage] > files.txt)

??

Jerry.

I am somewhat new to the cooker list, and I just migrated to 9.1 beta.
The difference is that now I've actually made the transition from
"theory" to "practice" in my involvement with rpmdrake 2.x, and it isn't
positive. I just don't believe the 4-way interface is as good as
rpmdrake 1.4. Behind the scenes the "engine(s)" may be new and
improved, but the interface just isn't getting it. I don't understand
*why* it was changed, and I have not talked to anybody that does. It
seems to me that this should have been a discussion/vote within
Mandrakeclub prior to the time that the change was made. I assumed that
that was one of the reasons that Mandrakeclub existed.

>But what do I know, it's much easier and quicker to manage packages
> on the CL anyhow ;~ppp

I use rpm to install downloaded individual rpm's and rpmdrake to install
from CD and update the OS from the net. Usually I get the latter two
items done pretty easily from the rpmdrake 1.4 UI. But since I've been
using LM91 Beta 3, I've developed a strong aversion to using rpmdrake.

I used to could start rpmdrake 1.4 from an Eterm and then as I conducted
actions in the UI, it would report back to Eterm exactly what it was
doing, connecting to, unpacking, installing, etc, et al, ad infinitim.
Very handy; very good UI experience; a good teamwork job between the CLI
and the UI. Now with 9.1 all that is history.

I *could* start using the CLI for this stuff, I've just been occupied
with too many *other* things in the CLI to pay attention. I don't spend
all day playing with rpmdrake. But when I do use it, I like for there
to be a decent UI sitting there waiting. With the advent of rpmdrake
2.1 it is now probably time to get a handle on the CLI procedures for
urpmi, at least in the interim period that it takes for rpmdrake 1.4 to
be voted back in.

IMO, the bottom line is that despite the fact that it was all in one place,
the ui was a terrible design, performance sucked and the application code was
bloated.

One can get around the common place to load everything by accessing the four
different modules throught he MCC.

I just recall many discussions on a.o.l.m back during beta testing of 9.0
discussing this very thing, with some people liking it and some people hating
it. I also recall the Cooker discussion during the development process that
spelled out quite clearly why this was a positive change. A lot of naysayers
were convinced during that discussion, which is why it changed.

The people that don't like a change are always the most vocal about why they
don't like something, which is why when you go back and look, the evidence
will always point to the dissenters outweighing the people that like it.

Take the recent discussion about the new mdkkdm as a case in point. I
personally hate it and think it should go away yesterday. You, however, may
like it and think it is the best change Mandrake ever made. The Internet is
full of posts from me making a case for why it should be gone, but because
you may like it, you didn't say anything.

I don't think a development decision made by the company that pays for the
development a tyrannical one, and this was definitely not arbitrary. I also
think Club voting was put into place in order to determine if fluxbox or
blackbox goes on cd1 or 2, not determine the development direction of the
Mandrake Tools. No matter how many people vote to put nVidia drivers in the
distro, they won't go in.

Because you try to use class C before it is defined (you declared it
above, but the definition comes afterwards).

As long as the class is only declared, you may only use it in limited
context. For example, you may create a pointer or reference to the
class, you may also define new types based on the class (typedef).

But when you define class D, the compiler tries determine the memory
layout of the class, and thefore has to know more about C than it does
at that point.

Anders, I can't comment about command lines but I've seen this with other
pieces of software. Usually, when I lose something here, and it won't
restart
its because its not completely dead. You can do a "top" or to
bring up KDEs' System Guard and see if part of that process is still

If it is, just kill it, then restart your app.

Works for me here. :-)

Don't know, but did you try to simply print out the new value and look
in which way it has changed?

Aside from that, does $_SERVER[$PHP_SELF] or what you need? It is the
recommended way to find out about (the local part) of the URL.

Gosh. I like it :-)
urpmi.setup seems to use the online database of urpmi sources at PLF. So it
should be possible to dynamically adjust the list as sources are
added/deleted.

Every release of Mandrake has nice new goodies like this, but all too often
very few people ever find out about them. I hope this little app is clearly
marked somewhere since the people who need it most are the ones who are least
likely to find it.

(An example of a neglected new feature is the Samba setup wizard - To set up a
basic Samba server, all you have to do is press the Samba wizard button in
Mandrake Control Centre. Only problem is you have to install the drakwizard
RPM before you can see the button)

Favorable reaction where, exactly? I haven't seen any and I've scanned

Although some do agree with you, I don't. I personally like the new rpmdrake
much better. It is much faster and I think the package selection is a lot

[newbie] Rpmdrake in 9.1 needs to be stomped and burned

2003-02-12 Thread Lyvim Xaphir
Whew. I tell you what guysI love 9.1 in general and so far things
have been working OK. But this new rpmdrake UI is the worst idea I've
seen in a long long time. I wish I had one or two gallons of holy
water, some wooden stakes and some nightvision goggles so I could put
this undead monster to it's final rest.

Rpmdrake in LM82 was very eloquent and I got addicted to it in record
time; all functions right there at your fingertips, including
update/install/removal/source configuration. I got used to using it
almost on a daily basis. Contrast this with 9.1, where you have
rpmdrake butchered into four seperate chunks, each one of which does not
allow access to any of the other pieces. To get things done you have to
go back to one of the other icons, which brings up a seperate
incarnation of rpmdrake doing the separate thing. In LM91 beta 3, to
duplicate the functionality of one LM82 Rpmdrake UI instance, you must
activate all four icon instances of rpmdrake listed in MCC. Then you
end up with four seperate windows, each one of which looks identical to
the other one except for the title bars. It's absurd.

Now try running the "new and improved" rpmdrake from an Eterm. It puts
you into "software packages installation" mode. Can you affect what
mode you want it to go into? Not according to rpmdrake --help. There
is not a method listed to do so. Translation: "Mandrake Update" mode:

Manager" mode: unavailable. Previously all these functions were easily
accessible from within the LM8X rpmdrake UI. NOW you have to activate a
seperate icon for each one. El dumb-o.

The positive side to all this is that in the Mandrakeclub RPM voting
page, you can let it be known if you do not like LM9X Rpmdrake by
casting your vote for Ctardif's entry, listed as "rpmdrake 1.4
(9.1/i586)". This would bring back the old rpmdrake. FYI...the version
of rpmdrake that LM91 Beta 3 has off of the CD's is rpmdrake-2.1-4mdk.
The version of rpmdrake that was shipped with LM82 was
rpmdrake-1.4-18mdk.

Now where did I put those NV gogs

tom$ frpm curl
libcurl2-7.10.3-1mdk
curl-7.10.3-1mdk

tom$ which curl
/usr/bin/curl

I don't know if those are what beta3 installs (probly updates),
but at least in a recent b3 install, curl was installed. I should'a
said why I prefer curl. For one I like the output better than wget's.
A matter of preference. The big advantage during multiple file d/l's
tho, is curl doesn't reconnect to the mirror between each file like
wget does. So at the least, it's faster.

Cool at least i'll have an idea with the modules. I have a Saitek joystick which is
totally useless now (no linux module) so i've been doing any games using the kb (and
been getting quite good at it too ROFL) but I plan on eventually getting a new
js/gamepad. I think the only thing about M$ I miss is Tomb Raider 3... I never quite
got it finished before I got so fed up with Winblows that I formatted my HD's lol.
well ok i miss yahoo! voice chat too... but can live without that hahaha.

Thanks for that info, Tom, I'll check my system. I dont think that i have curl

[newbie] unkillable process?

2003-02-12 Thread Jerry Barton
I had mozilla crash on me earlier this morning and when i tried to re-start it i got
that blasted mozilla profile picker thingy. i did ps ax | grep mozilla and it came up
with 6 mozilla processes. i killed them all BUT... 2 of them would not die. i tried
every signal i could think of to stop it but it refused to be killed. I finally had
to reboot. mplayer and xine have both done this to me before too, come to think of
it. to get mozilla to work i've had to remove mozilla 1.1 and galeon and install
mozilla 1.2.1 from source, move my ~/.mozilla folder to ~/.mozilla-old, I STILL had to
create a new profile but at least mozilla is back up and running. (of course... i
can't install galeon now because it wants mozilla 1.1's mdk rpm). Anyway... what to
do about these semi immortal processes?

Default is wget, unless curl is installed. 9.1b3 installs curl, so
that's what urpmi will use. I tend to like curl better, but it seems
wget is often more bulletproof. So, if curl is installed,

   urpmi.update -a --wget && urpmi --auto-select --wget

Will make urpmi use wget. From the man page,

"Wget has been designed for robustness over slow or unstable
network connections; if a download fails due to a network problem, it
will keep retrying until the whole file has been retrieved. If the
server supports regetting, it will instruct the server to continue
the download from where it left off."

OTOH, it seems curl needs a switch to support resumes,

 -C/--continue-at
"Continue/Resume a previous file transfer at the given
offset. The given offset is the exact number of bytes that
will be skipped counted from the beginning of the source file before
it is transfered to the destination. If used with uploads, the ftp
server command SIZE will not be used by curl."

Thanks for jarring my brain Ed. I didn't think to look at these
man pages. It appears that --wget is a better option with problem
connections. Then urpmi should resume, even after a re-connect.

   I've been usin 'cook'
(alias cook='urpmi.update -a --wget && urpmi --auto-select') as I got
tired of hdlist retrieval failures due to "too many users" and such
errors. --wget just keeps hammerin away till they finally let me in.
So currently I'm usin wget to update sources, but curl to get the
updates ;)

Anders, I can't comment about command lines but I've seen this with other
pieces of software. Usually, when I lose something here, and it won't restart
its because its not completely dead. You can do a "top" or to
bring up KDEs' System Guard and see if part of that process is still running.
If it is, just kill it, then restart your app.

Works for me here. :-)

Yes, it did work - doing all the js tests now show my USB joystick working,

OOwriter <=> Word

Use Opera free version for either his windoze or Mandrake, and set it to
identify itself as IE.

Hmmm... there was a *private* thing in the original
script, I'll attach an updated version. Try it. If that
doesn't work either, point your browser to :

http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/index.php

where you can define sources in a very *GUI* way.

Re: [newbie] easy to use HTML editor?

2003-02-12 Thread Alan Carbutt
Angus,

If you have a copy of Dreamweaver, you can get it to run under Linux.
Check out http://www.frankscorner.org/wine/ to see how to get several
apps to run under wine, including Flash and Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver's
code is pretty clean, but there is no substitute for knowing HTML and
coding it your way in a text editor. I use Quanta, Bluefish and Screem
also under Linux when I don't remember the tags, but 9 times out of 10,
I'm using gvim for the nice syntax highlighting features. I've never
tried the install with wine, but I have other apps working under wine
and Frank's site has been a good reference.
Good luck,

++alan

[newbie] Strange problem with my 8.2-box

2003-02-12 Thread Anders Lind
Hello there,

I have a strange problem with my Mdk 8.2-box, after a while I lose the commandline in
for example RXVT, if I open up a new one nothing comes up. Do anyone have ever heard
of this or can give me an idea what I can do to fix this.

The last part '$1' isn't needed, eg,

 tom$ alias frpm
alias frpm='rpm -qa | grep -i'

 tom$ frpm rpm
grpmi-9.1-5mdk
rpmdrake-2.1-5mdk
perl-URPM-0.81-7mdk
gurpmi-4.2-16mdk
rpm-helper-0.9-1mdk
rpm-build-4.0.4-28mdk
rpm-4.0.4-28mdk
urpmi-4.2-16mdk
rpmtools-4.5-7mdk

Actually I believe the use of 'urpmq' (man urpmq) is better than
my alias, but it's hard to teach an old dog (like me) new tricks ;)

I agree. That would definitely be a cool idea to have some of the other
listers on here post some tips and tricks about Mandrake. I'd even like
to see it become a mailing list all its own. It would greatly help us
newbies, and perhaps even the experts as well.

Here here!

I'm by no means a guru (or even a guru in training lol) just a normal person using Linux on my Desktop. I could sure benefit from it (and I'm sure others would too), and if no one has any objections, I'll occasionally post little tips I use. Just seems like a neat idea to share a little help that might not have been specifically asked about but is still very useful! I might even use my webserver to set up a site with TIP: topics from the list we could refer people too as well. What do you all think?

[newbie] Mandrake 9.0 & PNY GeForce4 MX 440-SE

2003-02-12 Thread John S. Chalice
Hey there..

I just upgraded my video card to a new PNY PCI GeForce4 MX 440-SE, from my
previous of a Radeon 7000. Unfortunately, I am still having a problem
getting XWindows to work for Mandrake 9.0. I tried installing the I32
nVidia driver rpm binaries (both the GLX and the kernel) for Mandrake from
nVidia's site.. I also tried making the drivers from the .tar.gz source
files as well, *and* I tried playing with some of the options in the
XF86Config-4 file.. but I still couldn't get the GUI to show up. It doesn't
lock up the keyboard, but I can't see anything but a black screen. Does
anybody have any suggestions? Thanks for your time.
