Reinstall of kdenetwork successfull, and thankfully mail database still there. That is *not*, however, something one expects of an upgrade routine. (I still have to reconfigure my taskbar application launch buttons, which is kind of rude.) ^_^ Can you explain what you mean by 'got segmented'? I understand the words of course, but not the context as it relates to what happened to me. The reinstall of kdenetwork was slick as a whistle, and the KMail menu was right where I would have expected it to be: Networking>Mail>KMail. Well, there probably isn't a pre-defined set of channels set up for Indonesia yet, so you will have to choose the country with the closest standards to you and either auto-scan through all the frequencies to search for them (unreliable if signal strength isn't 100%), or manually set the channel frequencies yourself by manually scanning or typing in the exact frequency if you know what it is. You could try the XawTV website or mailing list for advice, or a local Indonesian user group mailing list (I'm sure you're not the first Indonesian resident to run a TV card in Linux :-) This of course assumes that your TV card is recognised and configured in Linux. Go through the MCC (Mandrake Control Centre), under Hardware is DrakxTV, which you can use to configure your hardware (although it doesn't always work, my card needed manually changes to modules.conf to get it working), which finishes with an auto-scan. You'll know the hardware is working if you get a screen and earfull of static. Once the hardware is going, then try to set up your own frequencies. Now, I find XawTV to have an awful UI, so I use Zapping instead. It's manual channel config is certainly easier. There is also KWinTV, but it's a bit old and buggy, and the replacement QTVision is not quite ready yet. Cheers! John. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Anyway: mv ~/foo/bar/file ~/foo -should work from any directory. If you were in foo you could use: mv bar/file . - not /bar/file though as this would point to a directory called bar under / - the . stands for the current directory. If you are moving files all the time you could do: export foobar=~/foo/bar - this sets the variable foobar to hold the path to save having to type it. from then on you could use: mv $foobar/file $foobar/.. If you wanted to you could edit ~/.bash_profile so that the variable foobar is set when you start bash. add the following: foobar=~/foo/bar export foobar This wouldn't be much use unless this file moving of yours is always from bar to foo. I'm reading through this basic stuff at the moment. I didn't understand where ~/ was. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] ATI 8500DV AIW video drivers
Hello everyone, Is there anybody out there with some experience with this card under ML9.1? At a minimum, I would like to get the 3D acceleration and the TV tuner functions working. It is my understanding that the ATI drivers will provide GL acceleration but will do nothing for any of the other functions of this card and that the Gatos drivers can provide atleast nearly full funtionality to this card under linux. I have also found reports that the ATI drivers may work better for the 3D acceleration than the ati.2 gatos drivers provide? Any thoughts or experience on this subject? Also, is it possible to mix and match the drivers to use ATI's own drivers for 3D Accelation and the Gatos drivers for the TV tuner, tivo functions, remote, etc.? I have also noted that ATI's driver rpm "fglrx-glc22-4.2.0-2.5.1.i586.rpm" is built for glibc 2.2 and their check.sh script reports that I have glibc 2.3, as I understand it this shouldn't be a problem, but I'm wondering if there is a better rpm to use? or a better solution? During my attempts to decipher the gatos website I have gotten the impression that these drivers are intended to be used with XFree86 version 4.1.0 and work atleast somewhat with 4.2.0, what is this going to mean to me since I am running 4.3.0? The more information I find, the more confused I become on this entire video driver subject. If someone can point me in the right direction here, I'd really appreciate it. What I'm really looking for is any advice on how to get the best results with this card, and a heads up on any problems that I can expect to run into. If there are any good information sources on this that could help clear some of these things up, please let me know where to find them. below are the results of running the check.sh script from the ATI website, if there is any further information that I can provide that will help with this discussion, please let me know what you need and since it's likely that I don't know, how to find that info. = ATI Technologies = Checking which OS you're running... uname reports 'Linux' version '2.4.21-0.13mdk', architecture 'i686'. Object format is 'ELF'. libc version is '6.3'. XFree86 Version 4.3.0 is installed. No package available for glibc 2.3. Try fglrx-glibc22.tgz Binary package name is 'fglrx-glibc21.tgz' Thanks in advance for any and all help provided. I know I'm asking for a lot of info here but as I said, now that I have been looking into this for a while, I am no longer even sure where to start. RTFM one too many times I guess. Any ideas? > > Thanks in advance > Jack Hello Jack, Looks like you're really shooting yourself in the foot... with an Uzi! ;p Well, the problems are quite complex, so let's start localizing it one by one shall we? 1. Your hdd and cdrom were fine when they were still in the old pc 2. You installed them on the new pc and problems began arising 3. You put back your hdd and cdrom into the old pc and hdd was failing! - From those, we can deduce that it is very likely that your new motherboard is the cause. Whoooa! Wait a minute, before we jump into that, we need one CRUCIAL information from you: "was there any chance that the new motherboard has been tested before you bought it? Did you see any system running on that motherboard? or you just bought it wrapped nicely in a box?" If the answer is that you haven't witnessed any running system on that motherboard, then it is VERY LIKELY that you've got yourself a defect product, and it might also have ruinned your hd (check both hds in the old box, see if the new hd survives). For the memory issue, try put the memory into another box, see if it works. - -- Fajar http://linux.arinet.org Linux mdk91.sistek.kom 2.4.21-0.13mdk GNU/Linux 09:48:27 up 2:25, 10 users, load average: 1.93, 1.49, 1.29 Quote of the day: In 1968 it took the computing power of 2 C-64's to fly a rocket to the moon. Put the Primary master as hard drive and on the end connector of the cable, the slave on primary master should be on the mid connector. I think that the best way to connect is to have the HDs on Primary (master and slave) and the CDROM and CDRW on secondary master and slave. Others may prefer a different arrangement. I have run into the problem with the hard drive as you have and the only way I could get the harddrive recognized was to reformat. I first erased it with "DiskEraser" and then did a clean install. [newbie] nasty upgrade surprise
I put Cooker RC2 over my Bamboo last night, and I'm pretty unhappy that I did so. When I reboot after the upgrade, my taskbar buttons have been reconfigured. Some, for example KMail, are gone. Others are new. In my opinion new is okay, I can always deal with that. But I cannot come up with any justification for an upgrade routine that subtracts or eliminates anything I've configured. Moreover, and really annoying, my KMail appears to have vanished into the ether. It is not on *any* menu or sub menu (believe me, I have checked and triple-checked them all), and I cannot find it on the drive (which may be that I simply don't know where or how to look). So I'm rather annoyed at the moment, and e-mailing from Windows. I realize a beta is a beta is a beta, etc. But an RC2 is also extremely close to a release version, and many actually be one. The reason I did this, by the way, is that someone else running a P4PE with onboard sound told me it worked in Cooker. Not mine. So this entire exercise was a waste of time, and has apparently set me back rather than moved me forward. Is one able to trust an upgrade routine from Mandrake? To what extent? Where do you suppose my KMail is? Yes, "upgrade" was selected from the install routine. Lance Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] Sound Card
I have a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live 5.1 PCI sound card and I have just about had enough with sound card problems with this computer. Over the past couple of years, I started with Mandrake 8.2 and upgraded to 9.0 and 9.1 During my really initial learning phase, I reloaded Mandrake 8.2 and 9.0 several times each. The only problem that I had (and it occurred everytime) was I had to struggle with getting the sound to work all the way. I got the sound to work with 9.1 for the most part with the exception of the Surround sound until recently someone had a solution that fixed the Surround sound. Yesterday, during something I was doing, I trashed my / directory and had to reload 9.1 for the second time. Guess what -- the sound doen't work at all again. I have tried everything that I did in the past, researched the newbie list (and there are thousands of entries on sound problems) tried everything I could find there and still no sound. My rant is that every time that I have had to install a new version or reinstall an old version I have had to fiddle-dick with this sound card and the solution has appeared to be different every time. SO THE POINT TO THIS LONG AND TIRED EMAIL IS -- I know that someone (and I remember it as being Anne) bought a sound card that came with Linux drivers and worked out of the box. I don't mind the occasional learning experience but this is one of those problems that I would like to make permanently go away. Is there a particular Sound card that works? But something confuses me here : you have a serial connection, but as far as I know GTKam only works for USB. On a serial line, I think you should try gPhoto. If your camera isn't listed, try another Fuji. Those cameras are supposed to have pretty standard settings, like Olympus. Funny thing is, when I plug my Olympus into the USB port the GTKam icon appears on my KDE screen, but behaves exactly like you describe : no go. I have to mount the device manually, then the camera acts like just another harddisk and I can move, copy etc.. Try to go to the gPhoto homepage : http://www.gphoto.org/proj/libgphoto2/support.php where your camera is listed as supported. [newbie] Do you have a 17' LCD monitor (or 15' one)?
Hello, Do any of you use a 17' LCD monitor? Which one? If not, do you have a 15' one? Which one? Have you been able to configure a nVIDIA graphic card with it? Which one? Linux support for the latest technologies and most recent hardware tend to be lacking. My brother has not been able to install the nVIDIA drivers to go with his 17' inch LCD monitor, so, as a complete newbie, he had to give up the powerpack to install with the free download edition. He told me that there is not option for 17'monitors during installation, so he couldn't select his monitor. I'd like to change my 14' CRT monitor for a 17' LCD one, but I'd like to see if anyone had any luck with them before I buy one. In Konqueror "Settings", or you can access from the Configuration menu by clicking the button on the bottom left of the taskbar (panel) under the heading of Configuration>KDE>Web Browsing>Java and JavaScript. The JavaScript function on web popups policy can be set to "Smart" and you'll get the popups you request by clicking a link, but automatic popups will usually be disallowed by the browser. Or you can use the Deny setting to block all, which is the default in Mozilla You must then specify sites allowed to display through popups. Re: [newbie] Samba in Mandrake 9.1
At 03:27 AM 9/26/2003, Derek Jennings said something remarkably like (but somehow subtly different from): To get Samba working all you need to do is set the Workgroup name in the config file. You can do that by GUI simply by installing the drakwizard RPM using your Mandrake Software Manager. Restart Mandrake control Centre and there will be a new 'server' category. Go through the Samba Wizard. At the end of the wizard it tells you to open a terminal. Enter 'su' to become root and then for each user of your system enter smbpasswd -a user_name The user_name must exist in both Linux and Windows. The password given is the **WIndows** password for that user. It does not have to be the same as the Linux password. Afterwards users will be able to access theit /home folders from a Windows computer. Thank you. I think I got this working right, but I am getting errors from my Windows machines. I suspect the problem is now on the Windows side. -- Kevin B. Re: [newbie] "Parking" messages in KMail
At 04:40 AM 9/26/2003, Franki said something remarkably like (but somehow subtly different from): What are the top three GUI mail clients in Linux, do you all reckon? Franki: I'd guess: Kmail Evolution Mozilla Mail Many like Sylpheed as well, but I'd guess the three above would be used by the majority. Do you know if any of them do a good job with multiple accounts, keeping them separate? I have been using Eudora for Windows, which I really like. It keeps track of each account as a separate "personality", and if I reply to a message it knows which "personality" received the message, and uses the appropriate return address, signature, etc. I'd like to be able to do that in Linux, if possible. -- Kevin B. [newbie] Changing monitor
Hello, I currently use an old 14' CRT monitor and I'd like to change to a new 15' or 17' LCD monitor. I can find information on configuration, but what do I do when I want to switch from one monitor to the other? Do I turn off the computer, make the switch and Mandrake will notice the new monitor at boot and configure it (the checking for new hardware is on at boot). Or should I boot in console mode, without X and configure the new monitor from the console. Can you provide some pointers to the general procedure to follow is such a situation. [newbie] Very basic bash question
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I studied the bash documentation reasonably thoroughly, including man mv and info mv, but I haven`t found the answer to this; so I am hoping for a simple answer here: Often I am in /home/dvg/foo and want to move files from /home/dvg/foo/bar to ~/foo. I can`t find a command shortcut to do this. Until now I have had to work around by: cd bar mv file* .. s (=alias for cd ..) Naturally I could have done: mv /bar/file* ~/foo, but sometimes my current prompt is several levels down and I prefer to keep it short and simple. I`m sure there is an easier way. Not sure if you're only interested in one-off opening of e-mail URLs or in a regular switch to a default browser. If the latter, maybe there is an equivalent in KDE to the one in Gnome. My e-mail client (Evolution) defaults to Mozilla, but you can vary this by editing /home/user-name/.gnome/Gnome and changing the line containing "default-show= ." to default-show=your-preferred-browser-name "%s". 'dillo' is very lightweight. I've found it particularly useful for quick checking of e-mail URLs without all the overhead of the heavy duty browsers on a dial-up line. Re: [newbie] Rant: The man pages
Rather than directing a newbie to the man page, it's often better to recommend the info page. OK, sometimes there is no info page and sometimes it's identical to the man page, but frequently they have more explanation and, most usefully, example commands. Later, of course, we'll be able to just type RTFT (Read The Fine Twiki) ;-) Sir Robin -- "I can say: 'Thank these bees for their honey as though they were kind people who have prepared it for you'; that is intelligible and describes how I should like you to conduct yourself. But I cannot say: 'Thank them because, look, how kind they are!'--since the next moment they may sting you. - Wittgenstein Robin Turner IDMYO Bilkent Univeritesi Ankara 06533 Turkey www.bilkent.edu.tr/~robin Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? In any case I get rid of pop ups by using 'privoxy' (It is in the 'contrib' folder on any Mandrake mirror) With privoxy installed point your browsers to port 8118 Privoxy will block pop ups and adverts configurable per site. [newbie] taskbar design?
I have two problems with the taskbar in KDE 3.1. 1) some applications open with the titlebar under the taskbar when the taskbar is at the top of the screen This also is a bug in XP, at least on my machine. I keep my taskbar at the top of the screen, a la Mac style. For me, the extension of the fingers to move the cursor up is a much easier movement on the hand and wrist than the contraction to go down-left. What has become the "normal" "start button" location is about the ergonomically worst possible position for me. But there ya go, and some apps open with titlebars under the taskbar. I doubt this happens with the taskbar at the bottom -- it doesn't in Windows either. 2) the identifying text on taskbar buttons fades out on the right side of the button Can't believe this is by design, but it must be. Doesn't matter the app, the text is fine for the left-most 85 percent or so of the button, then fades fast. Ugly as sin IMHO. Where the title of the application is short (does not fill the button), there is no problem. But if the title extends to the right side of the button, the text fades out. [newbie] "Parking" messages in KMail
Anyone know if it is possible to 'park' a message in KMail? (means setting a cannot-delete flag on a particular message so that it cannot accidentally be nuked via the delete key, nor can a folder containing a thusly marked message be deleted until it is either moved out or un-flagged) KMail is not too bad, otherwise. It is considerably slower than The Bat! on Windows (if you do need to run a Windows mail client, that one is a dandy, written in Delphi) but KMail is not slower enough to be a real bother, just noticeable when deleting and when it does its cleanup after closing. My mail database in Windows is rather sizeable however (multi-account and more than 25,000 messages and attachments), and my mail database in Linux is miniscule, so it will be interesting to see if KMail slows down much as the database grows. What are the top three GUI mail clients in Linux, do you all reckon? Lance Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
