I don't know if it's the same under linux and Windows, but in Windows, in

I utilise the TEXT installation of mandrake (redhat) to do anything.
In this mode you can partition your HD with FDISK and DISKDRUID :
first : FDISK to do the partition; primary and extended.
second: DISKDRUID making mount-points.
After this go to the next menu who ask what mount-point you'll format;
the first time ALL of course.

Create at least following partitions and mount-points:
/boot (must be primary partition.About 32M, to preserve several
kernels, starting under the 1024st cylinder )
/( my case also a primary, +- 600-800M)
1 extended for the rest of your HD divided in:
/usr(the big one, my case 3G)
/usr/local (needed to preserve own data and programs; no reformat when a
reinstallation has to be done)
/home (not to be reformat when a reinstallation has to be done, so you
preserve your locally work)
/reserve (to allocate space for later use)

So, this what I had done.

Good luck.

Re: [newbie] Programming

2000-04-19 Thread Eric L. Brine

Just some additional comments, mostly on perl.

Perl is good, because it can be better than bash for some systems
administration tasks. Plus, Perl has much functionality; it's
definitely at least considerably powerful, and being a scripting
language, you don't need to deal with compiling, which makes or can make
it useful for rad (rapid application development). Scripting is very
nice for many reasons, and Perl is a mighty scripting language.

It is very good at text manipulation. Memory allocation and deallocation
is a breeze. Definitely not the hassle it is in C/C++. It has a strong
community. It has a huge repository of modules (CPAN).

The perl home page:
  http://www.perl.com

The Comprehensive Perl Archive Network perl module repository:
(If you need it a module, it's probably there.)
  http://www.cpan.org

 - python (haven't done any work with python, but it seems to be used a
fair amount - you'll find a fair number of python scripts, which has
 also been integrated with Perl),

I don't know what you mean by it being intergrated with perl. They're two
completely seperate languages. I'm just starting to read up on python. It
could possibly be better than perl.

At that level, though, you'ld want to learn some of the servers, Apache
being a core one as far as internet/intranet development would be
concerned. Perl has a module for interfacing with the Apache server,
 now, too.

Apache: http://www.apache.org

That module is mod_perl. http://perl.apache.org/ I suggest you get a good
grip on perl before looking at mod_perl. Basically, it's an extention for
the Apache web server that allows one to write extentions for Apache in
perl. It's not a language, just an interface to Apache's API. It replaces
CGI but does much more. (Actually, CGI scripts can be run over mod_perl
provoding they meet some requirements.)

mod_perl has an excellent mailing list.

There's a fair amount of documentation installed on your Linux system,
 once Perl is installed.

man perl

That documentation is a reference, not programming lessens i.e. it assumes
you already know how to program, and gives you the specifics of perl.

If you're just starting out programming, then bash and Perl should be
 two good places to begin.

If you do want to learn perl, the O'Reilley books (for perl and otherwise)
are considered bibles. These should be available jus about anywhere.

SQL is a 4GL, 4th generation language, and very English-like; therefore,
it's not a monumental feat to learn. It's powerful, but there's much
less need for developing programs to access, manipulate and store data.
The underlying aspect with respect to data organization or
normalization, though, is critical to developing good relational
 databases.

However, it's limited to querying and updating databases. SQL commands are
usually issued from other programs, written in C, perl, java, whatever.

RE: [newbie] HELP!!

2000-04-18 Thread Eric MC DECLERCK

To do this, there are several steps as follows:
1. set hidden and read-only files attibutes to 'archive'
== attrib -r -s -h *.*
You can also output the results to a file: 'attrib -r -s -h foo.txt' for
later review.
Do this for ALL the dir's.
Take care of user.dat user.da0 system.dat and system.da0. Windz reset
this files, so don't open windows. Do it in dos.
Check some files when click on it and select 'properties'.
2. Defrag your HD with FULL screen, so you can see if files stayed at the
end.(Takes several hours)

3. In dos run 'FIPS' (comes with your linux cd !)
Now look what space is available.
If there is not enough space, repeat all above and SEE IF THERE ARE FILES
STAYED AT THE END OF YOUR HD. If so, you forget (or windows does) to set the
attibute.

Try it. There is no danger with FIPS as long as you don't save anything!
And READ the doc of FIPS.
The max space to install ALL about MDK linux is about 1.3G.

[expert] I figured out how they do FTPd to FTPd xfers!

2000-04-18 Thread Eric L. Brine

No, it definately exists. Under Windows you can use a program called
"Flash FXP" to transfer directly between 2 FTP-accounts without having
to pump all the data through your own machine.

You got me thinking, and I figured it out!!!
(I'm excited 'cause I didn't believe it was possible.)

It relies on these facts:
- Data is sent on a different connection than commands.
- A different data connection is made for each transfer.
- PORT not only specifies a port number, but an IP address.
- Data connections can be created by the server (use PORT)
or by the client (use PASV).

As you can tell, FTP is quite unique. However, it's those unique
features that gives it the necessary functionality to achieve
server to server transfers.

Explanation by Example
==

Let:
  Machine 'A' = 131.202.3.6Machine 'A' is the Sender.
  Machine 'B' = 131.202.3.8Machine 'B' is the Receiver.
  Machine 'C' = 24.114.125.24 Machine 'C' is the Client.

A sample session goes like:
  - Connect login to machine 'A' from 'C'.
  - Connect login to machine 'B' from 'C'.

  - Change directory and whatever on machine 'A'.
  - Change directory and whatever on machine 'B'.

  - Setup the server end of the data connection:
- CA: PASV
- CA: 227 Entering Passive Mode (131,202,3,6,255,147)

  - Establish the data connection:
- CB: PORT 131,202,3,6,255,147
- CB: 200 PORT command successful.

  - Initiate the transfer:
- CB: RETR source_filename
- CA: STOR dest_filename

  - CA: 226 Binary Transfer complete.
  - CB: 226 Binary Transfer complete.

  - Do other stuff.

  - CA: QUIT
  - CB: QUIT

  - Close connection to machine 'A'.
  - Close connection to machine 'B'.

A transfer in the other direction is done by switching to which machine
'RETR' and 'STOR' is sent.

One could even do this with two telnet windows! wow!

H, I hear all the time about people having problems
with setting up hardware, and hardware that has no support
in Linux, but almost NEVER do I hear about Linux instability
 on good hardware.
In fact I had an old system consisting of an Oktec Rhino9 board
with a cyrix M2 P200mmx that used to crash all the time in
winblows95 that worked perfectly for about 6 months on Linux
before it finally bit the dust (overclocked Cyrixes dont last long..)

The only real hardware incompatibility that caused me freezes/lockups
and problems installing in Mandrake 6.02 was my old S3 Virge card.
I managed to get it running reasonably well but in the end slipped
an old Matrox in instead and never looked back.

 Just my 3 cents worth.

I can comisserate with you - I installed Linux on my home PC, and
 now when I
 run
Partition Magic on it there is just a long yellow box where my partitions
 should
be, with text that reads "No Partition - ERROR" across it - Linux and
 Windows
still boot fine, but I'm frantically backing up my data and
 waiting for the
 other shoe to drop.

For a to me unknown reason, my linux partition an two windows

 not
seen any more when I boot my computer.I still have lilo boot
 choice but when
 i
try my linux OS, I get a kernel panic because I cant mount the
 root (/). In
windows, which i can still run (with only my C drive, the first
 partition on
 my
disk), I only see my Windows partition (Fat partition of 2008 MB) and then
 an
unknown partition of 15MB(probably where the boot info of the
 lilo and linux
is), and then 7516 MB of free space. In these 7516MB should be my linux
partition an my SWAP partition and my home partition, and aditional dos
 partitions. I don't have a rescue diskette that works, so I can't get a

 data back?
 Please help!!

Verify first of all if youve get all the necessary packages related to
XFree.
See www.rufus.com , go to distributions, mandrakesoft and select the first
XFree package you have downloaded. There you'll see what is provided and
what is needed by the package, see also the changelog. And so on.
Don't forget to download the 'libs' !
The X contribs are of course the X11R6 packages. Check out if there is a new
version needed for XFree 4. There is a new X11R6 version 4 on www.xfree.org

 Hi all,

I was wondering if it is possible in a dual boot system (linux, win98)
to have Netscape for Linux share the user files with Netscape for

directory in /mnt/dos/.../Netscape user folder, effectively sharing
mail, bookmarks, browser settings, and cache content between OS's. Is
this possible? I haven't noticed any customizable user folder setting in
Netscape for windows, but is there such a thing in Netscape for Linux?
Or some other way to do it?

RE: [newbie]

2000-04-07 Thread Eric MC DECLERCK

Run 'FDISK', nothing will be done before you give the command 'w' in fdisk !
and you can keep away at any time.
So, keep in mind that the linux boot must be below the 1024st cylinder !
You can divide your HD in 4 primary partitions:
1. Linux native or dos (add a swap partition to linux)
2. dos or linux

3. dos
4. dos

After that you can setup the 'logical' partitions.

Type 'm' in FDISK for the menu.
Type 'p' to print what about your HD. etc

For dos there is no more need for more than 1 primary partition.
In linux there must be at least 1 primary and 1 swap partition.
Give linux at least 4-6 G (depends what you install)

If you don't trust 'fdisk', run 'FIPS'.

Try it out.

[newbie] Classic Newbie Questions!

Here are a couple classic newbie questions I hope someone can help with.

I have completed the install of the Mandrake 7.0 without problems. I noticed
the source for the kernel was not installed by default (nor was I asked for
it...)

1. How can I tell what the default config for the kernel that is currently
installed (even if I did not do the compile)?

2. When configuring the kernel for compile, need I only configure the couple
items I am interested in (ie lp, scsi) and the rest will be correct or must
I step thru every single choice when using make xconfig?

3. Almost everytime I try to compile anything, I get piles of warnings and
errors and no docs on what paths, variable etc I have to change in order for
the compile to run. Where can I get a good overview of the compilation
process including what where and how headers, libs etc are?

  minor number...

I posted this to [expert] as well, but it went unanswered. Maybe this is
too simple for them? But I need help; this is infuriating!

  Here's my scenario:

Running Win98SE on bottom 10GB of 20GB hard drive.
Installed Mandrake 6.1 on upper 10GB last December. Worked beautifully.
  =)
Bought Mandrake 7 Complete and formatted and installed over 6.1 (didn't
  upgrade).
Mandrake 7 will not mount the DOS/FAT32 partition (at boot or
  otherwise). It
gives the error "/dev/hda1 has invalid major or minor...". Everything
  listed in
/dev under hda lists major number as 3 and minor number corresponding to
partition. Kernel is located on /dev/hda3, FAT32 (LBA) on /dev/hda1. I
  normally
boot from my config.sys using loadlin.exe, but /dev/hda1 can't be
  mounted even
if I use the boot disk.

Now when I went back to install 6.1 which worked fine before, it crashes
  during
  formatting /dev/hda3 as ext2.

Has anyone had this problem? Is there a fix/patch/easy explanation, or
  do I have
to backup my hd and reformat all partitions from scratch?

BTW: Win98 on /dev/hda1 still works; no problems.

  TIA,
  -Tim

Worked fine with Redhat 5.2 and Slackware 3.6 some time ago with the

and in init 1 hand loading modules. Since the kernel for Mandrake 7.0

[newbie] FTP daemon not accepting connection

2000-02-26 Thread Eric Kwant

Hello,

I'm currently running Linux Mandrake v6.0 with a stock "server"
installation. The FTP daemon allows anonymous FTP to log in, but it doesn't
allow uploading into a fully writable upload directory. It also doesn't
allow users that have accounts on the system to log in. The only way to
connect to it is anonymously. Does anyone know what configuration files or
settings I can look at to fix either of these problems? I've scanned all the
man pages I thought would contain something useful, but can't seem to find
the right fix.

I don't know how you would do that with Moonshine unless you had access to
your file through NFS or SMB. If the files are on your own server I would
recommend configuring one of those to gain access to your files on the server.

You can try to install some RPM (library/header) and then ./configure again.
If error occures again, uninstall that RPM and install another.
 possible RPM's:

If your provider is like mine, you should let DHCP handle the info for
the
EXTERNAL card(ip, host, etc.). You should only have to configure the

Do all of the checks that I gave you in my first reply and to be sure
that you entered your network information correctly please do the
following:

1. Click on Linuxconf icon.
2. Click on Networking button.
3. Click on Basic host information button.
4. Select the Host name tab.
5. Give your computer a name.
6. Click on the Adaptor 1 tab.
7. under IP address, enter the IP address that the cable modem people
gave to
you.
8. Under Netmask enter the subnet mask that the cable people gave to
you.
9. Under Net device enter eth0. (This is the card that connects to your
cable
modem.
10. Under Kernel Module enter the module that your eth0 card uses.
11. Click on the Adaptor 2 tab (2)
12. Repeat steps 7 - 10 for this adapter. Remember that your 2nd
adapter
should have a unique IP address. It SHOULD NOT BE THE SAME AS eth0.
Also its
Net Device should be eth1. and be sure to click in the "Enabled" box.
13. Click the Accept button.
14. On the Network configurator form click the Name Server Specification
button.
15. Put your DNS numbers in the "Nameserver 1" and "Nameserver 2" boxes.
16. put your domain name in the "search domain 1" box. example
olmpi1.wa.home.com
17. Click the accept button.
18. Click on the Routing and gateways button.
19. Click on the defaults button.
20. Enter your Default gateway's IP address as supplied by your cable
company.
21. Click on the accept button.
22. Click the Quit button on the Routes to other networks form.
23. Click on the Quit button on the Network configurator form.
24. Click the Quit button on the Linuxconf form.
25. A "Status of the system" dialog box will come up. Click on Activate
the
changes button.
26. After the Linuxconf dialog box goes away you may still need to get
your
eth1 card going. There is a way to do it without rebooting but
rebooting
works if you don't know how (I don't.). :-)

Watch the messages as you reboot to ensure that BOTH cards come up.

How can I install "tar" files?
I'm trying to install Gnome Chess, which contains a file called "gnome
 -chess-0.2.2.tar"

A "tar" file is a file that is made from multiple files and is "balled"
together to make it easier to distribute. You must use the tar utility
to "un-ball" this file into its original files. i.e. tar xfv [filename]
should do the trick. If you see a file with the extension tar.gz or
tar.Z then not only is the file balled together but it is compressed.
In this case tar xfzv [filename] will decompress the file and "un-ball"
it.

After doing this you will probably be left with the source code for the
Gnome Chess. I'm not sure. I haven't looked. If you are, then look
for instructions in a readme file. Usually the procedure is to change
into the directory created and issue a ./configure and if that goes ok
then issue a make and then a make install. However, read the
instructions because this may vary.

Ok, 1st, most anonymous sites ask for a password and it is customary to
put in your email address.

Mandrake comes with a excellent FTP program. You can find it under
"Gnome and X Apps | internet | gftp" if you are running KDE.

Enter the Hosts IP address or ftp site name in the Host box at the top
of the application. For example: If I wanted to go out to the
linux-mandrake ftp site I would either enter it's IP address or
"ftp.linux-mandrake.com" (No quotes)

In the port field enter "21" (No Quotes) 21 is the FTP port.

For a user enter anonymous

For a password enter your email address.

Press enter and it will take you to the site.

You will see a list of folders on the left which are located in your
home directory on your own computer. On the right will be a folders
that are on the host computer. You can highlight files and click on the
arrow button that points to your own computer's directories to copy the
files.

Hope this helps.

Currently there are a lot more professional games written for Windows
then for Linux. Linux is also currently harder to configure.

Both these issues are being addressed and great strides are being made
in both areas. There are ICQ-like programs that run under linux. I use
ICQnix which has the look and feel of the Windows ICQ but it is still in
beta form and does not have all of the features as it's Windblows

anything I have seen under Windows.

If I were you, I would either wait a few years until Linux is main
stream or do a duel boot so that I could boot into Windblows when I
wanted to play games that I couldn't find for Linux.

[newbie] Xconfigurator Problems

2000-01-30 Thread Eric Kolotyluk

I'm having a hell of a time trying to get Xconfigurator to work with an
IBM Ambra Ispiranti. Along the way I've seen several ways the
installation configuration process could be better:

1. If you don't get your X server configuration right, when Linux comes
up it loops endlessly trying to start the server, failing, starting,...
There seems to be no way to break out at the login prompt and start in
terminal mode. It would really be nice if ctrl-C did something useful at
this point.

2. During the configuration phase, if you don't pick the correct display
adaptor, and get into the monitor configuration, there seems to be no
way to back up and choose another display adaptor. I've started the
installation process over a dozen times because of this. It would be
really nice if the BACK selection at the beginning of Monitor
Configuration actually went back.

3. When the window server fails during configuration it gives no
indication of what's wrong, so finding the right combination of settings
is just a crap shoot. After the system boots the messages from the
failing X server fly by so quickly, there's no time to analyse them.
Actually I can pause the screen, but the messages are of no use anyway.

4. I once managed to get a usable combination of setting and the X
server came up well enough to use, but the vertical sizing was off.
Other problems were that the window manager seemed to know KDE manager
seemed to know the correct size of the screen, but new windows seemed to
think the screen was bigger than it really was. I opened a console
window and ran Xconfigurator trying to find a more workable selection of
settings, but couldn't find one that ran. When I quit, Xconfigurator
stored the new (incorrect) settings without asking me if that's what I
wanted to do. Now I'm back to not being able to remember the selection
of settings that sort of worked, once again playing hit and miss at
configuration time.

What's really amazing is I can't seem to get things configured in plain,
vanilla, VGA mode.

For whoever maintains the configuration part of Mandrake Linux, I'd be
grateful if you made some improvements to reduce configuration
frustration.

By the way, I may be a Linux newbie, but I'm a Solaris expert.

Cheers, Eric

totally screwing up something in the process? Suggestions would be
greatly appreciated!

[newbie] Canon Printer setup

2000-01-03 Thread Eric Hanks

I've got a Canon BJC-7004 (Nice little printer)I'm sure it worked
fine with RH-5
The prob is the printer only uses the top left side of the whole page to
print...It prints the entire document nice and neat, but only uses about
25% of the whole page...upper left hand side...It's like seeing the
entire doc downsized and pasted in the corner of the pageI've tried
different page settings, printer settings, looking in the Manuals for
help...Everthing seems to be set up correctlyWhile the Canon drivers
do not mention Canon BJC-7004, I've tried all the other Canon
settings...Some worked, some didn't..The one's that worked all produced
the small document in the upper left hand side of the page...It takes up
about 1/4 of the page.

It's driving my nuts...I know this printer works with linux, I've
used it before with Red Hat...Please tell me what am I missing here

Re: [newbie] Two systems

1999-12-22 Thread Eric Mings

Unless they are useing one of the internal cablemodems it most likely to
work. They general just plug into a ethernet card. They may require extra
software however that doesn't have a linux port..

I have a cable modem connnected to the uplink port of an ethernet hub and
it works great for my Macs. I haven't configured the linux boxes on my
net to use it because I need static IP numbers for them. However, I can
see no reason why it would make any difference what kind of machine on
the network is going through the cable modem. Of course, then I could be
completely wrong :-)

[newbie] Strange messages in my log files.

1999-12-19 Thread Eric L. Damron

I found this in my /var/log/messages log:

kernel: ip_masq_ftp OUT: got PASV

I find no indication that anything was transfered in the
xferlog file.

This is on a home server and I know for a fact that my family
and I haven't been using FTP. In fact no one was logged on at the time of
the message. Could this be an indication that someone is using my server
as a WAREZ site?

Thanks.

Mike, thanks for the help. Netscape is up and running...The fonts seem to be alittle
hard to read, Smaller, blocky looking..Not as smooth looking as Win-Netscape. I was

font for
Netscape, but it didn't seem to help any...Any how...Thanks again...It's really nice
to have a
source of knowlegable (SP?) people to help...I live in Carson City Nevada...Most

are just starting to learn what a computer is. So almost everything I've learned has
been
through trial and long nights spent trying to figure it out on your ownI read the
books
and manuals and often feel like
" I still have no idea of what your talking about man!!!"

Thanks Alot.

[newbie] X window remote access?

1999-12-08 Thread Eric Mings

I have read some information about x window being a server and client
program. I was under the impression the server and client could exist on
seperate computers. Is it possible to access a machine across a network
as root running K desktop and x windows? I clearly do not fully
understand how this works. I have used telnet some but that is pretty
limited for what I want. I would like to be able to colocate one of my
machines (running Mandrake 6.1 and K desktop) at an ISP and need to know
if I can access it for administration across the net with X windows/K
desktop. Could someone please clarify this for me. Thanks.

[newbie] Amd?

1999-12-03 Thread Eric Mings

Under what circumstances is it useful to have amd running? I read the man
pages but it still is not clear to me whether I need this running on a
machine that will be primarily a web server. I generally access this
machine to work on it either directly or via appletalk (no windows
network accesses). Thanks.

[newbie] Memory - what a hoot!

1999-11-22 Thread Eric Mings

I originally posed the question about where to find good prices on
memory. Thanks to everyone who responded!

Anyways, as a comparison, the local CompUSA quoted me a price close to
$500 for 128 meg PC 100 memory. I just ordered it from Access Micro for
$140! I repeatedly asked to make _sure_ the Access Micro memory was PC100
(not 66) and they assured me it is. Amazing to me. There are probably
other sources that would have been close to that amount but I wanted to
pay by business check instead of plastic (which many others
couldn't/wouldn't do). Pays to shop around!

Re: [newbie] Memory - what a hoot!

Sure, call me lazy, but do you happen to have an URL for Access Micro?
I'd like to pick up another 128 for this machine and that's the best
price I've seen since I bought this stick 6 months ago.

U http://www.accessmicro.com/ ;-)

Actually the price they quoted me on the phone was better than what I
remember seeing on their website. I would call for a price.

[newbie] A little OT- Memory

1999-11-21 Thread Eric Mings

If anyone has suggestions for places to find the best prices on memory
upgrades that I can use for my PIII 450 linux box I would appreciate it.
I am going to be using it as a server and need at least PC100 128 meg
chips (though I would like to buy 256 if I could find an affordable
source). I have looked at several mainstream mailorder places and prices
vary widely. Y'all can email me directly if you think this is not of
general interest to others. Thanks much.

[newbie] Sendmail

1999-11-16 Thread Eric L. Damron

I was told that if I remove the -bd flag from the script that starts
sendmail, it would no longer listen to port 25. This is exactly what I want
but I don't know what script I need to edit. (Mandrake 6.0)

Does anyone know what script / file I need to edit?

[newbie] ADSL soon (I hope)

1999-11-16 Thread Eric Mings

I can almost taste it :-)

After months of waiting it appears that I will soon finally get adsl
through a local ISP provider (assuming Bell South actually shows up to do
their part). In anticipation I had my linux box built with dual ethernet
cards. Currently one card connects to my home network and I have
connected to the net via a 56k modem. Now instead I will have my other
ethernet card connnected to an adsl modem. Has anyone setup a system with
adsl connection to the net and might have some pointers about issues I
need to consider? For example, I think there is more than one type of
adsl modem available and I don't know if it makes a difference which one
I choose.

[newbie] Background jobs

1999-11-14 Thread Eric L. Damron

I need to start a job in the background (jobname ) but sometimes I need to

Can anyone tell me how to do this?

Thanks.

[newbie] What is this?

1999-11-09 Thread Eric Mings

I asked about this once before under a subject about being concerned
regarding a possible scan of my machine. Unfortunately I did not receive
a reply as yet. Just recently I have begun to find entries in my syslog
such as:

Nov 9 21:51:18 tiger kernel: nfs: RPC call returned error 111
Nov 9 21:51:18 tiger kernel: RPC: task of released request still queued!
Nov 9 21:51:18 tiger kernel: RPC: (task is on xprt_pending)

Can anyone tell me what would likely cause this? I have portsentry now
and it doesn't appear to show any violations. The manual would appear to
indicate that rpc allows c programs to make c calls across a network.
Thanks.

[newbie] Relay test your mail server

1999-11-09 Thread Eric Mings

Just saw this on a Mac mail server list. You can relay test your mail
server by using your mail server machine to telnet to:

mail-abuse.org

It will automatically relay test your mail server on that machine and
provide you the results onscreen as it happens. Pretty cool!

Re: [newbie] APACHE and PHP

1999-11-08 Thread Eric Mings

Upon searching both the expert and newbie mail list archives as well as the
newsgroups I see several people have asked this questions and none have
recieved an answer.

Has anyone else come up against this...and if so what is the solution?

Yes I have.. and damn I wish I remember exactly what I did. |:-{

The essence of it is that I removed all references to the midgard module
in the apache config file and instead used the regular php3 module which
is also included in the distribution. This works perfectly. I was never
able to comprehend exactly what advantages the midgard module provided
over basic php so I am living happily in my ignorance :-)

[newbie] Blocking @HOME with ipchains - Can they tell?

1999-10-30 Thread Eric L. Damron

I got tired of @HOME running scans on my system so I blocked them with:

ipchains -I input -p TCP -s 24.4.254.140 -d 0/0 80 -j DENY -l
ipchains -I input -p TCP -s 24.4.254.141 -d 0/0 80 -j DENY -l

Can they tell that they're blocked or does it just look like I'm not running
any services?

Thanks.

[newbie] Anyone have virtual interfaces coming up at boot?

1999-10-28 Thread Eric Mings

I am beginning to get very frustrated. Steve has been trying his best to
help me, but so far we have not found a solution. I cannot get virtual
ethernet interfaces to come up at boot. It seems to be something with the
network script in inet.d that does not add the available virtual
interface startup scripts to the startup list. I am running Mandrake 6.1
on the problem machine. I have RedHat 6 running on another machine with
no such problems. Does anyone out there have virtual interfaces loading
successfully at bootup running Mandrake 6.1 ? If so please contact me if
you are willing to help me find my problem. Thanks.

[newbie] Still can't get virtual interface up at boot

1999-10-26 Thread Eric Mings

I posted before about not being able to get the virtual interface eth0:1
to come up at boot since upgrading to Mandrake 6.1 from 6.0. I have
investigated the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts directory and there
definitely is a ifcfg-eth0:1 script there along with other scripts. Is
there some reason that these scripts are not being properly run at
startup? I can easily bring up the virtual interface manually with
ifconfig. Thanks.

Eric Mings Ph.D.

Re: [newbie] Still can't get virtual interface up at boot

1999-10-26 Thread Eric Mings

Testing the /etc/rc.d/init.d/network script shows it's getting tossed
out of the list of interfaces on lines 51-52 or 55. From hacking back
through the commands, it looks like it's the ':' in the '(ifcfg-lo|:)'.

Try pulling the '|:' out of there and see if it works correctly.

Steve,

I tried that and unfortunately to no effect. I think you are on the right
track though, I believe that area of the script builds the list of
interfaces to bring up and does not produce anything but lo , eth0 ,
eth1 , etc. I think that in an effort to "ingore aliases, alternative
configurations, and editor backup files" the script fails to add virtual
interfaces and even a ppp interface if they exist. This would also
explain why I was never able to get ppp0 to load on boot. Unfortunately,
I don't know enough egrep to figure out what is wrong, but it would
appear to be a bug in the code. Help?

[newbie] DNS server analysis tool?

1999-10-24 Thread Eric Mings

On the Mac there is a great commercial DNS server analysis tool called
"DNS expert" available that queries a DNS server and looks for
misconfigurations and security issues for any given domain name you
choose. However, it is a hundred bucks and I cannot justify that for the
limited use I have for it since my evaluation time ran out :-(

Seems to me there must be some linux tool that can perfrom the same level
of analysis of DNS records to make sure they are setup correctly. Any
ideas?

[newbie] How do I bring eth0 down?

1999-10-23 Thread Eric L. Damron

I have a Linux server that I use for IP Masq. I wish to bring the ethernet
card to the outside down before lowering my firewall to do work on the
server. (I have has a LOT of attacks.)

I would just unplug the cable modem but when I do that there are a lot of
time out problems (delays) I was hoping that I could avoid these by taking
the eth0 card off-line. (It may not help but It's worth a try.)

Can someone tell me how to bring this card down (and back up.) without
rebooting the server?

Thanks
