2005-03-13 Thread JRH
Hi All,
I have been a way from Linux for a while, owing to too much other stuff
happening, and have forgotten a few things :-(

I'm trying to compile something, and I keep getting an error about X
includes, a la:

checking for X... configure: error: Can't find X includes. Please check
your installation and add the correct paths!
[EMAIL PROTECTED] qsstv-5.3c]#

I had this last year, and someone helped me out but I cant remember
how I did it!

Help!
Many thanks,
James

It sounds like you are missing some of the -devel packages. Chances
are, you are missing more then just the libxorg-x11-devel package.

Mikkel
Thanks Mikkel. I knew it would be something as simple as the -devel
packages... a quick urpmi soon sorted it.

Cheers,
James

  Something has changed.

  Go to http://urpmi.org first, then

I think it's something like easyurpmi.zarb.org or whatever

Anyway, do it that way initially, and you will have no trouble!

Re: [newbie] Emails are being sent with my username but I didn't send them :(

2004-08-21 Thread JRH
On Saturday 21 Aug 2004 2:47 pm, Terence Golightly wrote:
 List,

Recently, (I don't remeber the date I first saw them) I started
receiving emails from mailer daemons and anti-spam and firewall
software. I tink someone has hijacked my email addres. I don't know
where to turn. I looked through verizon's site but they want me to
download a winduz product the to get help from their helpdesk. No can or
will do! And of course I can't find an email address on the site (they
do a good job of hiding them). So I am turning here. What should I do
next? I have kept most of the replies if anyone wants to look at them.

It's possible that a spammer has hijacked your email address

However

Do you use Windows with the same mail address as well as Linux? If you yes,
it's possible (though unlikely if you are reasonably clued up), that you have
been hit by a worm such as Netsky, and it's bombarding everybody in your
address book with itself, and the error messages are mail servers batting it
back

Or the most likely answer, is that somebody out there is infected with Netsky,
who runs windows. Netsky is clever, and mails itself out as a delivery
failure message, with either your supposed original email (which you will
have never sent!) as an attachment. Curiosity gets the better of you, you
click to see the mail you allegedly sent, and bingo, youre infected. Another
way it operates, it will send out a message, telling you of an incoming mail
failure, and click this link to view the message via webmail. Click it, and
youre in trouble!.

If you dont have Windows, and it is Netsky or similar, relax. You wont be able
to stop the crap from coming in, but you can try cutting it down with a spam
filter or such like.

I'm getting up to 8 netsky hits a day still. AND IT'S SOMEBODY WHO IS/HAS BEEN
ON THIS LIST, AS THIS LIST IS THE ONLY PLACE THIS EMAIL ADDRESS HAS BEEN!!
UPDATE YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND BLOODY RUN A SCAN!!! :-)

Rant over,

[newbie] ClamAV

2004-08-15 Thread JRH

Ok,

I have downloaded and installed it, and it has asked me to set up a user
account for Clam, which I have done.

However, I cant get it to scan my entire drive, as maybe I am doing something
wrong.

I know the clamscan command starts it scanning, but it will only seen to scan
the current directory which you happen to be in at the time.

With F-Prot, you type f-prot / and it will scan the entire drive, including
the windows partition.

Any ideas what I need to be typing with clam, to get it to do this?

Thnaks,

JRH

[newbie] DrWeb

2004-08-14 Thread JRH

Hi all,

I've been following the thread about Security etc, with interest.

At the moment, I use F-Prot for Linux, run from the command line.

I installed DrWeb a good while back, and it gave me an extra account at login,
but no password. I take it this is commercial software, and to obtain the
password to be able to use it, I have to purchase it or similar?

Please enlighten me!

JRH

PS, every time I have looked at the DrWeb site, It's been in Russian, and I
havent been able to get the english version to work!

[newbie] BitTorrent Not working

2004-08-03 Thread JRH

Hi all,

I have just gone back to 9.2 from 10CE, and I am still getting BT and BTGUI
playing up on me.

When I double click a .torrent file, I get an error message saying that
KDEinit couldnt find the BitTorrent executable

I have checked, and the folder /usr/lib/bittorrent exists, but it contains all
python .py files, amog a few others.

Nothing else shows up. Any ideas? I have installed BT from the distro CD.

There won't be any advantage in a .torrent file for this, they are only
useful when there's a large number of downloaders. The torrent also
 downloads all CD isos.
You can still get the full 9.2.1 distribution as a torrent at the club
download page, or an iso for individual cds from the mandrake mirrors

Re: [newbie] Getting online with DSL modem

2004-07-24 Thread JRH
that says JR something like, SIOCDELRT not found. I don't think
 those are the actual
JR words to the error message, but the general idea. What is
 SIOCDELRT?

I'm having exactly the same problem with 10OE the Speedtouch 330 DSL Modem
(albeit USB).

It works fine under 9.2 10CE, but not official.

I'm quite eager to know what SIOCDELRT is as thats what I get when I try
to run the modem SIOCDELRT: No Such Process and then the connection
attempt fails.

Hopefully some brainy Linux guru out there can enlighten us all!

[newbie] CD ROM's Not Mounting Up

2004-07-20 Thread JRH

Hi All,

I went up to 10OE yesterday, and now my CD ROM drives arent automounting. If
youre installing something, and Mandrake asks for something, it will open the
drawer and load from the CD ok.

However, stick a cd in, and that's it, no desktop icon, and if you go
into /mnt/cdrom/, just a blank page.

How can I turn Automount on? I have looked, but cant see!

Many thanks,

JRH

[newbie] SIOCDELRT??

2004-07-20 Thread JRH

What is SIOCDELRT? Any Ideas?

I'm having the old Mandrake 10OE v Speedtouch USB
Battle again!

It worked ok, on an upgrade from CE to OE, so I
decided to do a clean install.

Now I am getting an error on bootup and shutdown,
when it comes to the internet connection. I get SIOCDELRT: NO SUCH PROCESS, and
the inevitable failure of the internet connection.

Can anyone throw any light on this?

Many thanks,

JRH

Don't forget also that King Features sued Mandrake last year over the

 ***

 http://www.channel4.com/science/microsites/R/real_wizards/witches_t.html

describes mandrake's use by witches - a witch I knew 30 years ago was
using it (he ground it to a paste rubbed it on his temples).

Through the ages, magic often involved taking drugs and seeing things.
Where the druids had ergot and the shamans had mushrooms, witches had
mandrake. The mandrake has long been regarded as having magical
properties, perhaps because its forked root gives the plant a human-like
shape. According to tradition, the plant would scream when it was pulled
 out of the ground. Consequently, mandrake was not dug up by hand;
instead, a dog would be harnessed to the root and encouraged to drag it
 out of the ground.

The mysteries of the mandrake are not limited to its shape. It is
related to henbane and deadly nightshade. All three contain a number of
very powerful alkaloids. When absorbed into the body, these chemical
substances can cause double vision, hallucination and even coma. With
their knowledge of the effects of mandrake, witches would have been able
to dose themselves to produce the required effects without risking their
 lives.

The witch's cauldron would have been used to boil the herbs in a fatty
solution; this produced an ointment that the witch would smear on her
body. A trance-like state would follow, with the witch experiencing
sensations of flying - this is probably the origin of the familiar
imagery of witches flying on broomsticks. Witches, like druids and
shamans before them, derived some of their authority from their apparent
ability to travel into another world.

 libjpeg-devel-x HTH

Hi Dan,

Yes, the libjpeg was an error on my part, and the appropriate devel installed,
got over the problem.

However, on the qt front, I do indeed have a newer version of qt installed.
The problem being, I cant install the earlier version, as in order to do so,
software installer wants to remove virtually the whole of KDE, owing to
dependencies. Looks like it's going to be a non starter then!

[newbie] 10 Official Speedtouch USB

2004-07-19 Thread JRH

It would appear that I have found a solution to the problem!

I know there are a few people who have had problems getting 10OE on the net
with the Alcatel Speedtouch USB ADSL modem, so this is how I did it!

Before upgrading, go to one of the 10 Community update FTP sites, and get a
copy of the Speedtouch Beta RPM (must be this one, the one on the 10CE CD
wont work), and the updated PPP and PPP_PPPOA RPM's.

Upgrade, and then use RpmDrake to uninstall the Speedtouch, ppp and ppp_pppoa
packages that came with 10 Official. Use Software installer to install the 3
new RPM's (just double click the RPM files).

Job done. Go into Drakconf, and enter New Connection, and set up the
connection as you normally would.

Job done. To test, in a console, as root, go to /usr/share/speedtouch/ and
make sure that mgmt.o is still there. If it is, type ./speedtouch.sh start.

You should be on the net!

[newbie] 10CE USB Printers

I gotta buy a new printer, as my old HP 510 has finally died.

I've got my eye on a Lexmark USB version (cos it's cheap!) and my neighbour

Has anyone had any Mandrake and USB printer experience? Will it work on 10CE

I dont want to go buy it and find I gotta go into Windoze to use it :-)

Re: [newbie] CD burn verify

2004-06-18 Thread JRH
 This isn't the first time
I've installed MDK 10.0 (network upgrade from 9.2), and I'm beginning to
 suspect the CD is corrupt

I have major problems when installing 10 from scratch (ie freshly formatted
drive) also. I have 2 different CD sets from 2 different sources here, and
the same happens with both.

Normally it all goes wrong after the files have been copied, and it prompts
you to enter the new root password. Enter it, and click ok, and the whole
system just locks up, and the only way to get it back is to reboot, and then
the install is totally shot, as X hasnt even been installed by that
stage..

The only way I have found around it, is to intall 9.2 first, and then
upgrade from 9.2 to 10.

Unless anyone has any better ideas?

[newbie] 10OE and Speedtouch USB ADSL

2004-05-17 Thread JRH

Hi all..

I posted last week about the lack of functionality
of the Alcatel Speedtouch 330 USB ADSL modem under 10 OE.

I have tried everything to get it to work. With no
success!

It works fine under 9.2 and 10 CE, so why not 10
OE?

Can anybody throw any further pointers at
me?

I have tried the 9.2 and 10 CE RPM's, in the hope
that it worked under those 2 editions, it should work under 10 OE... not the
case!

Would there be any logs to indicate where the
problems lie?

I'm getting no error messages when I try to boot in
terminal (./speedtouch.sh start), just the red failure mesage.

Normally, on boot/network start, both lights on the
modem begin to flash, with the USB light coming a steady green, then the ADSL
light will come a steady green when connected. Now, the USB flashes, and the
ADSL goes a solid yellow, and thats that.

Help, I havent got much hair, but at this rate,
I'll be totally bald!

Many thanks,

JRH

When you run the printer installation wizard, it will throw up a little

[newbie] K3B

2004-04-30 Thread JRH

Why oh why does K3B like to crash midway through burning an audio CD?

It will burn data CD's all day long, with no problems.

But, it will either crash at 50%, or just as it is beginnng to encode the
final track.

It has done this down the line from 9.2, through cooker and now CE.

I'm fully updated, and everything is set as it should be. I watched the buffer
status like a hawk during the latest burn, and not once did it drop below
96%, so I'm doubting it's an under run.

Crashing on the last track I can live with, as I always add an extra track to
what I want. But the 50% gets me steamed.. It wastes a CD!

Any ideas?

Anyone have an RPM, or anything else for that matter that they can send throug

[newbie] Windows LiLo

2004-04-25 Thread JRH
Hi all.

Until a week ago, Windows used to share my HDD alongside Linux.

Then, last weekend, MS-DOS decided it was going to ruin my Linux install (with
a little help from me inadvertently I guess!). I have tried to survive
without a Windows partition, but In reality, I cant.

I have loaded up 98 onto an old 2GB I have lying around, and have installed it
in the box, as a slave drive.

Now the fun bit. DiskDrake is seeing it, and calling it /dev/hdd1. When I set
LiLo to boot from this, it doesent happen. Probably because the drive isnt
mounted at this point??

Any Ideas how I can configure the boot loader to pick it up, and boot into
Windows from this drive?

I flatly refuse to let Linux and Windows co-exist on the same drive anymore!!
(if I could find Linux versions of the software I got, I would forget it
totally!).

[newbie] Windows and LiLo

2004-04-25 Thread JRH

Stephen,

Did as you suggested, and still no joy!

I select windows at the lilo screen, and it just hangs there now have
to use the reset switch to get it back again.

I have pasted my lilo.conf file contents below. Doubtless to say, I'm doing
something wrong here... but what?? :-)

Feel free to have a look, and make any mods as you see fot, if you think it
would help me!

[newbie] Shutdown/Reboot

2004-04-23 Thread JRH
I have a problem...

If I use the Shutdown/Reboot GUI in either KDE or Gnome, the screen goes
black, and the computer just hangs, and does not shut down. Turn it on again,
and the HDD has to be checked before it boots up.

However,

Open up a terminal, type poweroff or reboot, and things happen as they should.

I havent got a problem with this method, but my PC doesnt have a Windows
partition, and is shared by other members of my family, and every time one of
them has used it, It checks the file system, as they have been bought up on
Windows, and keep forgetting the terminal method..

Any Ideas how I can fix this problem so it works as it should?

[newbie] Knotify and Souncard issue......

2004-04-21 Thread JRH
An interesting one this

I finally found the route to a stable(ish) 10 community, buy installing 9.2
and upgrading, as opposed to a clean install of 10.

I've always had some driver issues with the soundcard (C Media CM8738), but
nothing that was not easily sorted. Until today.

Boot up, and you get the nice little KDE tune as KDE starts. Play a few MP3's
with XMMS, and you get to hear music.

Until after a while. Then, try to use the soundcard, and the error message
pops up, saying that the soundcard is either not configured properly, or
another program is blocking the soundcard.

A quick look at ksysguard process table, revealed 7 instances of knotify
running. Killed them all, and the sound is back again.

Any ideas how to to either disable knotify, or configure it so that when it
has notified, it exits? as for some reason it cant be killing itself, and
thus is hogging the soundcard.

Thanks,

JRH

[newbie] Update Mirrors......

2004-04-20 Thread JRH

I have finally managed to get it sorted!!

My PC must have been having a Microsoft Day yesterday, whereby it just
wouldn't play ball whatever I tried. It does that now and again.

I came home from work, booted up, and tried again.

Success!!!

I now have over 300MB's worth of updates coming down.

Many thanks to all of you that have offered help with the problem. I dont know
what caused it, I did the same today as I did yesterday, and it has worked.

Time to build a new PC methinks :-)

Thanks all,

Last time, I had to download 233MB of bugfixes!).

It's getting frustrating! :-)

Look in software media manager, and everything is as it should be, what with

(sorry if this comes out a bit long, but I'd like to make sure that I've
 explained everything).

On the weekend I installed Mandrake 10 (install, not update). Install went
fine. I then booted into KDE 3.2. It hung leaving the Mandrake wallpaper in
the background. I tried again, this time I got a warning about Knotify not
starting and asking me if I wanted to disable it. I did and it still hung.
I then went into IceWM, fired up Kcontrol and turned off the sound in KDE
(can't remember how I came to this conclusion).

So now KDE loads. That's good. The trouble is that there are a number of
apps that now will not support sound. I have tried setting KDE to use OSS
and Threaded OSS and, although it will still load fine, I still can't get
sound from the apps I want to use. In particular I'm having problems with,

 1) XMMS - This one is strange. With ALSA it will not play. With OSS it will
continually loop the first 1 second or so of the song until I hit stop.

 2) Mplayer - Will play most movie files fine, but if you exit half way
through the sound will loop around for around 5 seconds before stopping.

 3) SDL game (not tried others) - There is no sound whatsoever. I tried
recompiling the projects I'm working on and they simply can't get access to
 the sound.

I know my hardware is compatible (Sony VIAO laptop) as I have been using
MDK9 on it for over a year.

Anyone got any suggestions, fixes, etc? It's very frustrating have all the
benefits of the new KDE and general speed of everything but with such a let
 down in the sound department.

 Cheers,

 Steve :|

[newbie] MDK 10 and Drakconnect

2004-03-21 Thread JRH

Hi All,

I'm currently downloading Mandrake 10.

I downloaded and Installed Mandrake 10 RC1 a while back, and had some issues
with Drakconnect, and my USB ADSL modem.

The problem I had, was that unlike Mandrake 9.2, the auto detection wizard
just wouldnt set the modem up properly. For example, the wizard would bring
up a list, asking me to choose my ADSL provider. There was only 2 UK
providers on the list, not one of them being my provider!. This, coupled with
other problems, made for a non working internet connection, and it was
uninstalled, and I went back to 9.2.

Does anybody here have any experience of the Alcatel Speedtouch 330 USB ADSL
modem and Mandrake 10?. Can someone offer a step by step guide to
installation and config? (I have the modem firmware code, so dont tell me I
havent installed that!)

Many Thanks,

James Hill

Re: [newbie] MDK 10 and Drakconnect

2004-03-21 Thread JRH
Lee,

I have since upgraded from 9.2 to 10, and it shouldnt have really changed
things much. However, I have my connection set to start at boot, both green
lights began to flash on my modem, (as is normal), and then the ADSL light
went yellow, and that was it, a failure message.

I'm going to try setting it up with the Speedtouch package from the 9.2
Distro. The modem firmware code is the same as I have always used.

Like you said, 9.2 is now history on this box. so if I cant get things
to go my way, I'll reinstall 9.2, and let a Linux guru buddy of mine have a
play with it at a later date.

Before you leave 9.2 get a list of your drivers that are working.
You can choose them manually if the automagic install picks the
 wrong ones.

Happened to me when it was already too late (9.2 was history on that
box) I had to find someone with the same setup. He listed his
config and I was running in minutes.

I have just been to adobe.com for acrobat for Winsucks, and there was a

On 9.2, Acrobat seems to be integrated into Konqueror, so thats what I use

Like you Anne, I was reluctant to install 10.0 what with having
spent weeks to get 9.2 running well. But surprise : yesterday I
shuffled the CD2 into the cupholder and lo and behold, one hour
later 10.0 CE runs like a charm. Not only that, it runs about 30 %
faster, especially KDE. And, for the first time, I took the option
of installing the updates right away, during the initial install.
Everything worked well. Only minor glitches (so far) :

Now my printer (HP 3820) performs some (noisy) drills during the
boot process - but after a while it works.

 I had a /data partition (hda4) on 9.2, but 10.0 insisted to mount it
as /mnt/windows (it is a FAT32 partition), but I don't like to see
that word on my otherwise clean machine. So I had to edit fstab in
 order to get things straight.

I'm a little confused about the Mandrake Update. Seems that the
normal update repositories are gone and all updates are on the same
directory, just with higher version numbers. Haven't browsed that
 many mirrors, though.

Although I'm a Club Silver Member, I haven't been able to get my
hands on Acrobat Reader or RealPlayer, but I can live with that.

All in all : what a nice experience !

installed, but it wont actually give you too many clues as to what you need

I asked on the forums, but got the usual silence/unhelpful answers.

installed, but it wont actually give you too many clues as to what you
need
to install to rectify the situation!

I finally got it to install, and then it wouldnt run.. it hadnt even
  installed giFT!

I asked on the forums, but got the usual silence/unhelpful answers.

So, it's binned for the time being. A friend is in the process of
rolling
me a version, from the source code.

RPMs for Apollon are in plf for 9.2 and 10.0 together with gift-fasttrack
(Kazaa) and gift-openft (Native giFT) plugins If you define plf as a
urpmi
source, then all the dependencies will be installed at once.
You may find the fasttrack (Kazaa) plugin is not recognised until you use
Advanced settings to point to the location of the fasttrack plugin.

Read the config file to find which firewall ports you should open.

[newbie] MDK 10? Hmm.....

2004-03-21 Thread JRH

just managed to finally get 10 Community up and running, and I have a
question:

On 9.2, the login screen gave me the opportunity to manually enter my
username. 10 does not appear to give me that option. I used to be able to log
into KDE as root, and do things that way, to save time using command line
stuff.

I cant do that now. Is there a way to change the login screen at all, so that
I can do this?. I had it once with 9.2, but I cant for the life of me
remember how to do it!

I'm getting a bit frustrated now, I need to change permissions on various
things, and I dont know how to do it in shell so I need a GUI!
