Could the AR 7.0 itself be launched? If not you might need to reinstall it. Or 
I guess you didn't import it into your PATH. What will a which acroread in 
command line say? I remember I made a symbloic link ../AR7.0/bin/acroread 
to /usr/bin/acroread to insure it's in my PATH.

Are you sure that the nppdf.so in your $mozilla/plugins is the 7.0 one. I 
didn't use the script to install the plugin, instead I manually did that. 

I am not sure what's your problem because I installed the AR 7 through RPM, 
but after the installation when I opened some pdf files embeding in FireFox, 
it directly went the old version AR 5. I have to manully removed the 5.0 one 
and installed the 7.0 one of nppdf.so.

[newbie] ark rar

Hi Folks,

I have tried to use ark to extract a rar file but failed. It reported 
something like the file compressed using x-rar-compress and then failed. At 
that moment I used the ark along the Mandrake 10  KDE3.2. I remember its 
version is 2.4.x or so. Then I downloaded an ark-3.4-x RPM from rpmfind.net. 
but after installing it, the run of ark gave me a relocation error:  XXX. 
I have to remove it. Where could I download a right version of ark? Or is 
there some other good tool for rar?  Many thanks for any help.

[newbie] kmail problem

Hi Folks,

Recently I got a problem that I could frequently receive emails, which, I 
guess, are supposedly sent to my colleague. Although most of those emails are 
spam mails, I believe, it's kinda annoying. Because I don't know whether this 
problem comes from? Could anyone tell something by analysizing the following 
property from one of those emails. It's a problem of my Kmail, or my mail 
server or the guy deliberately sent those emails to me. What could give me a 
hint is, my email box does appear in the X-Real-To area. Many thanks.

 you could also open the pdf in kWrite.
 this will import the text too.
 the pdf format is proprietary and often weird.
 text can therefore come out mangled and out of sequence.

Hi Folks,

I also recently updated to Adobe Reader 7.0 and have enjoyed it for about one 
week. I got no luck in my first try after installing it. It directly went 
AReader 5.0 plugin I had previously installed. I went to the plugins 
directory of firefox, removed the old (5.0) one and manually copied the 7.0 
one there. One more thing, I made a symbolic link of acroread of 7.0 to 
my /usr/bin and removed the 50. acroread in my PATH. After that I got 
everything running. My system is Mandrake the 10.0 and Firefox 1.0. HTH.

I feel that AR 7.0 is much powerful than AR 5.0, but it's kinda slow to 
launch.

I guess it's a problem in your mail server side. Once I have tried to sent 
some mail over 20 MB (for test purpose) through KMail 1.6.1, it failed to

I guess this is the reason which means java is not in your path! You'd check 
where you installed JRE. When java is in your path the command which java's 
gonna tell you the exact location of java.

I'm not sure what's going on with your /etc/profile. If you have exported the 
PATH you edited, it's out of my mind why it's not working. 

I didn't edit the /etc/profile, just simply made a symbol link to put the java  
(/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_01/bin/java) into /usr/bin (/usr/bin/java). I guess this 
way is more straightforward.

I have installed OpenOffice and KOffice both. From my experience they are no 
big different but KWord is better than OO writer in the Chinese support. Also 
KWord can import PDF files (not well functioned). 

But now for most time I use KILE (KDE Integrated LaTeX Environment) to write 
paper. It's frontend of LaTeX but very easy to use. You don't need to 
remember that many LaTeX commands for writing something. You can use icons 
instead. Also, if you are a LaTeX veteran, you can directly use commands. 

Comparing to LyX which I gave up half a year ago, KILE is closer to LaTeX I 
believe.

Hi Folks,

This afternoon I copied some pictures from a USB flash memory stick. My box, 
10.0, automatically detected it a hardisk and displayed an icon on my desktop 
(I guess it's supermounted at /mnt/removable). 

Now I got a problem. Everytime after I boot my laptop up, I get some error 
message like Unknown device devscsihost2bus0target0lun0part1mntremovable 
from Konqueror (KDE3.2). The system tries to find the flash memory each when 
it's up. I remember that when I disconnected the flash memory, the icon was 
still there. I tried to open it (when the flash memory was not there), I got 
the unknown device XX error. How could I figure this out? Any help will 
be greatly appreciated.

I guess you've to write them in multisession style. But it seems that K3B has 
its difficulty with this kinda multisession feature although it claims it 
support this feature. Once I tried to burn a CD this way but I failed. SOme 
other guys on this list also suggest this, if I don't have a bad memory. You 
may try XCDRoaster as well.

I know this might not the appropriate place to ask this website problem.  But 
I do have no clue what's going on out there. Please forgive me.

I have set up my wensite in November. But recently my friends in China told 
that my site (looks like http://ourdomainserver/~qinghua) is not accessible 
for them (but they can access our domain server http://ourdomainserver/). But 
my friends at US has no problem to access my site.  Our domain server is 
running WinNT. I believe if our domain server, my site should also be 
accessible. Does anyone has any suggestion? Is there something to configure 
on the server side (I could not search my site through google locally in our

If you mean Firefox, you're right. Mine is 1.0 the rpm.

 I look at pdf's all the time and never had a problem. Both the Win
 version and the Mandrake version have never crashed, and both have
 several plugins.

I also have no problem with Moz and others.

 speaking of plug ins i just got the on the web with mandrake 10.1 and says 
 i need some shockwave plug in and a java plug in can someone tell me where

[newbie] firefox not robust as mozilla?

Hi Folks,

I have just used FireFox 1.0 for a couple of days. I guess it's really nice, 
faster than mozilla, konquer. But I also notice that it's easier to crash. In 
contrast Mozilla (1.7) I used to use is very robust. I recall that it never 
or seldomly crashes. Is this the price for FireFox to run faster than others? 
I use 10 official. 

BTW, I found there is a typo in the file pluginreg.dat when installing the 
RealPlayer plugin for it. The suffix is rpm, not ram. This might be a 
typo. I experienced this since I imported plugins, bookmarks etc from Mozilla 
when installing firefox.

Many thanks, Paul and Miark. I guess it might be caused by some plugins. I 
remember that when I tried to install mplayer plugin, firefox crashed quite a 
lot in case video clips (qt, avi, mpeg) were read. All firefox windows opened 
were off. I had to remove the mplayerplugin. Is there some way to check 
what's the cause? 

By the way, I get a search sidebar but the about plugins is gone. Thanks 
again.

I found SpellChecker (http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=499) for 
latex editing using vim/gvim is very powerful tool. It's much better than 
ispell. You may have already being used it, but for those don't have it, you 
may have a try.

[newbie] [lp.general] mozilla won't print

Hi folks,

Would anyone please help me with this not so serious problem? My mozilla just 
doesn't print any web pages. It reproted me that [lp.general] mozilla won't 
print. But if I print these pages into files and print them using XPP or 
Kprinter, there is no problem. Also, there is no problem with other apps such 
as OpenOffice, Kontact, even Acrobat Reader.  All those apps can detect my 
default printer, but mozilla can't.  It only find PostScript/default. I 
also change the print command from lpr XXX to lpr-cups XXX in tab 
properties of  the print dialogue, it still doesn't work. Even this is not 
a serious problem, it's a little bit of inconvenient. Can anyone say 
something? I use MDK 10.0 and Mozilla 1.7. Many thanks.

 On the Mox print page there is a button opposite 'Printer' that's called
 Properties.  Open that, delete the entry there and enter 'xpp'.  I think
 kprinter can be used the same way.  You should then find that the xpp (or
 kprinter) screen pops up when you start the print.

 Linux does not like idle memory, so when it sees some free it uses it, but 
 if it is needed for another app it will free it up for the higher priority 
 app. It is not a problem and should cause no slowdowns or hangs. 

I like this one. Some times ago I bought a 512 MB memory chip for my desktop 
PC already with 256 MB memory running MDK 9.1. Before I turned on it I tought 
that I'd have quite a lot free memory. But unluckily, I just found I had 
around 200 MB free memory (Without this new 512 MB chip, I remembered the 
free memory is over 100 MB then).  But when I run some matlab program, it 
used over 500 MB memory which is what I needed. So I don't worry too much 
about it now.

[newbie] what to do with non-contiguous files?

Hi, Folks,

Just several minutes ago, I had a power off in my institute. What surprised me 
was that when I tried to access some web sites (I intentionally did this to 
see what would happen) my laptop with MDK box (10.0) freezed. Is this normal?
By the way, what should I do since I found there is 0.2%  1.9% non-continuous 
space or files in my root and home partition respectively?  Any help will be 
greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

 Yes - and it was disk 2 that it happened to.  I took it out, gave it a good
 polish with a soft cloth, and it accepted it, though it was slow reading,

I also met this problem, and if my memory is not too bad, someone also met it 
and posted a same question here. My solution was not as that complicated as 
Anne did. I just took it out and put it in again, rotating it some, then it 
worked. The strange thing is after that (installation) this problem never 
appears again. Each time I installed something on CD2, it's always working. I 
wonder whether this is a problem for Cookers or not.

Can you find alsa (in services) running out there? It seems not (or it's

If only choosing from Mandrake 9.1 or 10, I prefer 10. It's very easy to 
install (my experience is about 20 minutes for clean installation, more than 
1 hour for updating). Basically there is no configuration problem and it's 
very to use. Some guy said 10 is more like a windows.


I just take a look over PCLinuxOS after Dereck's pointer. I have to say it 
even looks like a windows more than 10. I also believe that the right 
direction for Linux is like Derek's words: easy to install (GUI) and easy to 
use (GUI) for newbies, meanwhile keeping flexibility (command line) for 
advanced guys. 

Anyway, I love 10.

During installation you should have to choose the keyboard configuration. Can 
you go to MCC to check whether it's correct or not (what kind of keyboard do 
you have, Italian?)? I set English over a Portuguese keyboard. It works quite

 Considering that there are two releases a year, and buying a box each time
 will cost about $60, the Silver gives you the best value for the year, IMO,
 and it is better for Mandrake because the profit margin is higher than on a
 box.

I am not sure but I do not think so many people are willing to update their 
systems twice a year.  For me, I have sticked to 9.1 for about two years and 
just I shifted to 10 recently. I believe people having similar ideas like me 
are not a small number. We only update our systems when major relseases are 
available. Of course we may update certain software before this kind main 
update. So, I suggest that, if possible, Mandrake can set up a kind of 
flexible membership other than the existing bronze, silver, gold ones. I mean 
people can contribute to Mandrake whatever number (surely of money) they 
want, what they get may be limited download numbers (e.g., 5 or 10 times a 
year) or nothing at all. I believe some people would like this one. To be 
honest after downloading 9.1 I planned to contribute some to Mandrake, but 
when I found the least is $60, I gave up. Man, I must trust me $60 is not a 
small number for a student.

Many thanks, Bryan and Jason. I installed ACPI RPMs and enabled it through MCC 
last night but the problem is still there. In fact the situation became worse 
after enabling ACPI, I had to press power-off button quite a while ( 10 
seconds) to trun it off when rebooting. Previously what I need is a gentle 
touch. 

I checked the lilo.conf file and found only acpi=ht, but no acpi=on thing, 
is this right? Surely ACPI was up. I also removed acpi=ht from lilo but it 
didn't work. By the way, I have set a bootup password. Will this cause any 
problem?

[newbie] Mandrake 10.0 reboot hanging up

Hi Folks,

Recently I notice that each time when rebooting, my Mandrake 10 box always 
hangs up there. More specifically it hangs up there after messages such as
0„20„20„20„20„20„20„20„2md: stopping all md devices
0„20„20„20„20„20„20„20„2 md: md0 switch to readonly mode
0„20„20„20„20„20„20„20„2 restarting system.
Surely before this everything is unmounted or stopped. 0„2Thus I have to shut it 
down manually and then turn it on. 0„2There is no any problem at all when 
directly shutting it down.

I use a Compaq presario 2811, installed just with Mandrake 10 official. Is 
there somebody experiences the same problem? I have google'd the Mandrake 
mailinglist archives, but no luck. Any suggestion will be greatly 
appreciated.  Many thanks.
