Hi Paul, Are you sure that the nppdf.so in your $mozilla/plugins is the 7.0 one. I didn't use the script to install the plugin, instead I manually did that. I am not sure what's your problem because I installed the AR 7 through RPM, but after the installation when I opened some pdf files embeding in FireFox, it directly went the old version AR 5. [newbie] ark rar
Hi Folks, I have tried to use ark to extract a rar file but failed. It reported something like the file compressed using x-rar-compress and then failed. At that moment I used the ark along the Mandrake 10 KDE3.2. I remember its version is 2.4.x or so. Then I downloaded an ark-3.4-x RPM from rpmfind.net. but after installing it, the run of ark gave me a relocation error: XXX. I have to remove it. Where could I download a right version of ark? Although most of those emails are spam mails, I believe, it's kinda annoying. Because I don't know whether this problem comes from? Re: [newbie] Adobe Reader
Hi Folks, I also recently updated to Adobe Reader 7.0 and have enjoyed it for about one week. I got no luck in my first try after installing it. It directly went AReader 5.0 plugin I had previously installed. I went to the plugins directory of firefox, removed the old (5.0) one and manually copied the 7.0 one there. One more thing, I made a symbolic link of acroread of 7.0 to my /usr/bin and removed the 50. acroread in my PATH. After that I got everything running. My system is Mandrake the 10.0 and Firefox 1.0. Result of which java as follows: which: no java in (/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbi n) I guess this is the reason which means java is not in your path! Similarly what I got is [EMAIL PROTECTED] which java /usr/bin/java [EMAIL PROTECTED] ls /usr/bin/java -la lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 Feb 4 17:32 /usr/bin/java - /usr/java/jdk1.5.0_01/bin/java* I'm not sure what's going on with your /etc/profile. If you have exported the PATH you edited, it's out of my mind why it's not working. I didn't edit the /etc/profile, just simply made a symbol link to put the java (/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_01/bin/java) into /usr/bin (/usr/bin/java). I guess this way is more straightforward. Re: [newbie] which word processor
I have installed OpenOffice and KOffice both. From my experience they are no big different but KWord is better than OO writer in the Chinese support. Also KWord can import PDF files (not well functioned). But now for most time I use KILE (KDE Integrated LaTeX Environment) to write paper. It's frontend of LaTeX but very easy to use. You don't need to remember that many LaTeX commands for writing something. You can use icons instead. Also, if you are a LaTeX veteran, you can directly use commands. Comparing to LyX which I gave up half a year ago, KILE is closer to LaTeX I believe. Q.H. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] firefox not robust as mozilla?
Hi Folks, I have just used FireFox 1.0 for a couple of days. I guess it's really nice, faster than mozilla, konquer. But I also notice that it's easier to crash. In contrast Mozilla (1.7) I used to use is very robust. I recall that it never or seldomly crashes. Is this the price for FireFox to run faster than others? I use 10 official. BTW, I found there is a typo in the file pluginreg.dat when installing the RealPlayer plugin for it. The suffix is rpm, not ram. This might be a typo. All those apps can detect my default printer, but mozilla can't. It only find PostScript/default. I also change the print command from lpr XXX to lpr-cups XXX in tab properties of the print dialogue, it still doesn't work. Even this is not a serious problem, it's a little bit of inconvenient. Can anyone say something? I use MDK 10.0 and Mozilla 1.7. Many thanks. Bests, Q.H. Wang Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] [lp.general] mozilla won't print
On the Mox print page there is a button opposite 'Printer' that's called Properties. Open that, delete the entry there and enter 'xpp'. I think kprinter can be used the same way. You should then find that the xpp (or kprinter) screen pops up when you start the print. Many thanks, Anne. Now it works. I saw that kprinter is used by Acroread, but I don't realize the same can be done with mozilla. Thanks again. Bests, Q.H.Wang Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Have you installed ALSA related RPMs? You may find alsaconf and alsactl very useful in such a situation. HTH. Q.H. Wang Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com
Re: [newbie] Memory filling up on 9.2?
Linux does not like idle memory, so when it sees some free it uses it, but if it is needed for another app it will free it up for the higher priority app. It is not a problem and should cause no slowdowns or hangs. I like this one. Some times ago I bought a 512 MB memory chip for my desktop PC already with 256 MB memory running MDK 9.1. Before I turned on it I tought that I'd have quite a lot free memory. But unluckily, I just found I had around 200 MB free memory (Without this new 512 MB chip, I remembered the free memory is over 100 MB then). But when I run some matlab program, it used over 500 MB memory which is what I needed. So I don't worry too much about it now. Q.H. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] batch image converting
No, what I wanna is kinda generally image format converting. This is exactly what convert of ImageMagick does. Anyway, many thanks for your info. I think you will have to be more specific. [newbie] what to do with non-contiguous files?
Hi, Folks, Just several minutes ago, I had a power off in my institute. What surprised me was that when I tried to access some web sites (I intentionally did this to see what would happen) my laptop with MDK box (10.0) freezed. Is this normal? By the way, what should I do since I found there is 0.2% 1.9% non-continuous space or files in my root and home partition respectively? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Bests, Q.H. I took it out, gave it a good polish with a soft cloth, and it accepted it, though it was slow reading, so I guess the problem was not entirely solved. Of course your problem may be entirely different... Anne I also met this problem, and if my memory is not too bad, someone also met it and posted a same question here. My solution was not as that complicated as Anne did. I just took it out and put it in again, rotating it some, then it worked. The strange thing is after that (installation) this problem never appears again. Each time I installed something on CD2, it's always working. I wonder whether this is a problem for Cookers or not. [newbie] batch image converting
Hi Folks, Is there some way can easily convert all images in a directory from one format to another one? I mean, just using scripts, not tools like GIMP. I found there is such a tool program for GIMP can do that, but unfortunately I need to update GIMP first. Can anyone give me some pointers? Many thanks. Bests, Q.H. Re: [newbie] no sound mandr 10 dell laptop inspiron 8600
Can you find alsa (in services) running out there? It seems not (or it's corrupted by oss). Try to install alsa-utils package from CD1 then run alsaconf to configure it. HTH. I also run into similar situation. Sometime my Mandrake 10 asks me for 2nd cd when it's there. Luckily after retrying one time or two by rotating the cd, my system can find it. HTH. Re: [newbie] Laptop Easy one Silver
If only choosing from Mandrake 9.1 or 10, I prefer 10. It's very easy to install (my experience is about 20 minutes for clean installation, more than 1 hour for updating). Basically there is no configuration problem and it's very to use. Some guy said 10 is more like a windows. I just take a look over PCLinuxOS after Dereck's pointer. I have to say it even looks like a windows more than 10. I also believe that the right direction for Linux is like Derek's words: easy to install (GUI) and easy to use (GUI) for newbies, meanwhile keeping flexibility (command line) for advanced guys. Anyway, I love 10. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

Re: [newbie] Keyboard Problem
During installation you should have to choose the keyboard configuration. Can you go to MCC to check whether it's correct or not (what kind of keyboard do you have, Italian?)? I set English over a Portuguese keyboard. It works quite well. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

Re: [newbie] Mandrake Club
Considering that there are two releases a year, and buying a box each time will cost about $60, the Silver gives you the best value for the year, IMO, and it is better for Mandrake because the profit margin is higher than on a box. I am not sure but I do not think so many people are willing to update their systems twice a year. For me, I have sticked to 9.1 for about two years and just I shifted to 10 recently. I believe people having similar ideas like me are not a small number. We only update our systems when major relseases are available. Of course we may update certain software before this kind main update. So, I suggest that, if possible, Mandrake can set up a kind of flexible membership other than the existing bronze, silver, gold ones. I mean people can contribute to Mandrake whatever number (surely of money) they want, what they get may be limited download numbers (e.g., 5 or 10 times a year) or nothing at all. I believe some people would like this one. To be honest after downloading 9.1 I planned to contribute some to Mandrake, but when I found the least is $60, I gave up. Man, I must trust me $60 is not a small number for a student. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com
Re: [newbie] Mandrake 10.0 reboot hanging up
Many thanks, Bryan and Jason. I installed ACPI RPMs and enabled it through MCC last night but the problem is still there. In fact the situation became worse after enabling ACPI, I had to press power-off button quite a while ( 10 seconds) to trun it off when rebooting. Previously what I need is a gentle touch. I checked the lilo.conf file and found only acpi=ht, but no acpi=on thing, is this right? Surely ACPI was up. I also removed acpi=ht from lilo but it didn't work. By the way, I have set a bootup password. Will this cause any problem? Bests, Q.H. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Mandrake 10.0 reboot hanging up
Hi Folks, Recently I notice that each time when rebooting, my Mandrake 10 box always hangs up there. More specifically it hangs up there after messages such as 0202020202020202md: stopping all md devices 0202020202020202 md: md0 switch to readonly mode 0202020202020202 restarting system. Surely before this everything is unmounted or stopped. 02Thus I have to shut it down manually and then turn it on. 02There is no any problem at all when directly shutting it down. I use a Compaq presario 2811, installed just with Mandrake 10 official. Is there somebody experiences the same problem? I have google'd the Mandrake mailinglist archives, but no luck. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Q.H Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com
Re: [newbie] Update from 9.1 to 10.0 done!
As for me, so far so good with 10.0. Now that is too much like windows. It's more like Windows than 9.1 but not too much from my point of view. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com
Re: [newbie] libstdc++.so.6
/usr/lib/gcc/i586-mandrake-linux-gnu/3.4.0/libstdc++.so /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.0 It's a bit strange. After my update to 10.0, my GCC is 3.3.2 thus I only have /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5.0.5 Is this a side effect of just update, not clean installation?
