Download the enigmail and enigmime files and re-install them as root (on top
  of the existing files).

  Shut down and restart Thunderbird.

Open extensions and uninstall these both (again as root).

Shut down Thunderbird and re launch it and enigmail should be gone.

For some reason you can't uninstall the extensions even as root until they
 are
re-installed as root. It appears they were installed as root when the rpm was
  built.

Thanks Rick, mostly this worked... I was able to get rid of the extension
as a normal user. I did not have to log in as root. (When I did try to do
this, Thunderbird started the new account wizard!) This could be because
I installed Thunderbird under rpmdrake, and did not use the
firefox/thunderbird self-installer.

I don't know if my subject line made any sense, but what I'm trying
to do is this: I recently switched from booting in runlevel 5 to
runlevel 3. I'm using Xtart to give me a choice of window managers.
Since I started doing that, I am noticing several errors and
warnings fly by in text mode before the screen switches into
graphics mode and launches my window manager of choice. When I log
out of my window manager session, some of the info(plus additional
output generated during my session) is visible on the screen, but
much of it has already scrolled off the top.

I want to know how I can capture all that info so that I can look
at it after my session is over. I tried using the pause key to
pause before the screen switches to graphics mode, but no dice. So,
is there a way that I can either page up and see the text mode
output that has already scrolled up or redirect the output to a
file or something like that?

David,
you could try:
script (1) - make typescript of terminal session

after you login, type:
script ~/filename.error

then start Xtart, and eventually exit your windowmanager of choice.
back at command line, type CTRL-D or exit to stop the script
program. then less ~/filename.error

$ man script
 for more .

I tested it and it worked for me.

2. Set the font.
3. Set the borders to be a certain size.

Now I see the command as being as follows:
aterm +tr +trsb -sh 80 -fade 80 -tint blue
try this Mark .. /* on one line */

aterm -g 90x42 -fg white -tr -bw 0 -fade 69 -cr yellow -fn 8x13

I think -tinttype true
is needed for transparency

- -g length X height
should get you the gui size

from the man page :
 -tinttype type
Allows you to specify logical function to be used
when tinting transparent background. That will cause
aterm to logically combine text with background
pixels. NOTE: If shading option is used, or
background image is specifyed - true type will always
be used. That works with bpth transparent background and back-
ground image. Possible values are :

Fast tinting options : and, andReverse,
andInverted, xor, or, nor, invert, equiv, invert,
orReverse, orInverted, nand,

Slow tinting: true - will do true tinting - that
means that background pixel´s RGB components will be
decreased proportionaly to the RGB components of
specified tinting color; resource tintingType.

I built mine from the Icculus source, latest version was, IIRC,
0.15?

From here:

http://icculus.org/quake2/

The graphics, if you build the Quake2Max version, are *kick ass*.

Well, for the record, the brand new version of wineX called Cadega
4.0-1 does not work with either MOHAA or xorg, or maybe even nvidia
,but I doubt that.. , so the game is playing but the video is
wacked, scrambled .. ?? I will let the maintainers know.
the older wineX 3.3.2-1 DOES WORK 8)
So does wolfenstein and Never Winter Nights -- natively 8)

MOHAA I had running under 9.2 and haven't gotten to installing
the native version. I have to get the new installer .. IIRC it
has definitely been updated.

I didn't know about the quake2 mailing list .. we'll take a look..
thx

Thx Joe,
I have the source now and will give it a go tomorrow .. Cool !!
IIRC .. joe is the headshot guru 8)

It sounds like you have two seperate problems here. I'll take a stab at
the easy one first. If you are starting X as root, you will not be able
to run X programs as a normal user.

Thx .. makes sense to me 8)

Now, as for not being able to log in as a normal user, if would be
helpfull to know what kind of error message. Without that, the only
thing I can think of is to check /etc, and see if there is a nologin file. This
file is normaly created when you use shutdown with a delay time, and prevents
normal users from logging in. If this file is still there for some reasion,
deleting it will allow normal logins again.

 Mikkel
thx Mikkel,
There wasnt a nologin file in /etc .. and I can't find any error messages .. ?? or
nothing in the logs ..
I reboot and autologin doesn't work so it dumps back to login and thats where I would
login to root. I also added a user that can access and start kde or fluxbox with no
problems ...

jus not sure where to look anymore ?

Hi Teilhard,
I started using linux over 9 months ago and someone suggested
this.. Greg Meyer maybe ? IIRC any way ..

you can go to Mandrake Control Center [mcc] -- then to
Software management -- Remove
and .. with no intention of removing any packages 8)
.. just click on any of the installed programs for their information
.. make suremaximum information is checked, so you can take a look
at the list offiles that are installed from a package.

:: or the longer way ::
in a terminal you can type:

$ rpm -qa | sort  ~/rpmlist-`date +%d%m%y_%I%M`.txt

will create a file like this with the current date at the current
time:

rpmlist-100604_0904.txt

which is a sorted list of all rpm packages installed that you can
read in any text editor 8) and save for later.

and for any package name you can get the information of by typing:

$ rpm -qi packagename

or

for the list of files a package will install:

$ rpm -ql packagename

also ..
$ man rpm in a terminal
or in konqueror
type man:rpm for more info

Yes official is official and CE is more like a Release candidate.
So Official is better. Although, YMMV ..

Bill,
I had a similar problem with suspend/sleep mode that was related to
acpi for the 2.6 kernels. For Mdk 9.2.1 and 2.4 kernels, I had to
set lilo append to nolapic but for the 2.6 kernels and my nForce2.
I had to use the lapic since it is enabled in these kernels. But
it
would still lock up until I installed a tmb kernel.. see my sig ..
that fixed my nForce2 issues. It's still a test kernel, although it
works for me.

But we need more info ...
what kernel are you using ? does your bios support acpi ?
Have you tried noacpi or nolapic or acpi=off in your lilo

Have you tried the newbie archive for this problem ?

David, You may already know this but..

I dont have W2K, but IIRC it uses NTFS and Linux can't write to

 John,
I have an nForce2 MB also with the same USB controllers. And there
are 2 usb ports on rear panel for v1.0 and 2 on the front panel
for either usb v1 and v2 respectively.

I have 4 USB ports to rear and 2 USB ports plus the bios LED's to
header panel(which I actually have in the back, no matter) but
since I haven't got them set up and working yet I cannot say which
are USB1or2, though I'm kind of hoping they are all either USB1 or
USB2 according to the equipement that gets plugged in.

I think your right.

The first three entires have a tab called Configure Module
whereyou are invited to make some entries in the fields provided.
 The field begins, log2_irq_thresh.

And it says you can configure each parameter of the module here

Since my MD10 CE USB hub does not work properly, I thought there
may be something one can add here to assist the USB hub to work
better, I don't suppose anyone has any experience of what may be
inserted here ? Any suggestions welcomed.

I did the standard MD10.0 CE install which supplies both,

 and,
 vmlinuz-2.6.3-4mdk

 You think I should change, acpi=ht to apic=off ?
 I can boot either.

 Cannot see a conflict there.
 But no usb-uhci ???
Which I assume to be the USB2 if I had it working .
It looks as though your not using local apic which is included in the
the 2.6.3-7 kernel. you can check
/usr/src/linux-2.6.3-7/arch/i386/defconfig* to find out what was
confgured in any kernel and
/usr/src/linux-2.6.3-7/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt to
read what lilo append will accept, if ya didn't already know.

but.. my box is using lapic with the tmb kernel. And the 2.6.3-7
would work with lapic but wouldnt come from suspend.
Mark Annandale posted that he put 'noapic lapic' in lilo and IIRC
this was posted before as a fix, and he seems to be working now.
You could try that and see if this fixes anything ..

I didn't try the 2.4.25 kernel but I could boot the 2.6.3-7 kernel
and sound worked but no eth0 and was having DMA issues.

I did have a share with usb-ohci and eth0 on irq 12 which seemed to
be the problem. my interrupts are like this now.

[newbie] module.conf loading joystick drivers question ?

2004-01-31 Thread RickS
Hello,
I got my sidewinder joystick and SBlive gameport working with bascule's help
by adding: emu10k1-gp joydev to modules. .. and from googling
found this added it to modules.conf... alias char-major-13 analog
rebooted ..
then... $modprobe joydev
then... $modprobe sidewinder
in that order.. it works.
I've been trying to get these modules loaded in module.conf but with no
success. I've tried alias, probeall and modprobe ( which is a bad idea ) and
read .. re-read the man pages, so what's the proper syntax for these command
lines in modules.conf ? is this the correct file to add them to ? or would it
be module. ? I tried different methods but to no avail.
I'm not understanding somethings about the module loading, so can any one help
please ?

and read .. re-read the man pages, so what's the proper syntax for these
command lines in modules.conf ? is this the correct file to add them to ?
or would it be module. ? I tried different methods but to no avail.
I'm not understanding somethings about the module loading, so can any one
  help please ?

  TIA

oop - my mistake 8) although, thats what I obviously dont fully understand
about each different syntax for these settings. I understand what alias
implies not how to use it 8) yet ...

the alias line simply tells the kernel that the module analog is the one
that controls devices that have that major and minor number - or something
like that, maybe someone else will explain:) but you will need to add
 analog to /etc/modules:
 scsi_hostadapter
 nvidia
 analog
 emu10k1-gp
 joydev
 sidewinder

i see you have nvidia listed in /etc/modules, assuming you, like me are
using the nvidia binary drivers do you not find that they are loaded
automatically when X starts? there should be no need in a typical setup to
specify the graphics driver, that is done in the config file for X and
should be loaded from that reference, try it and see!

 bascule
snip

OK, I put in the order you showed and left the alias in modules.conf
and I still dont have the dev node and jstest fails ..
do I have to manually set the nod up .. js0 .. ?? it was being created when I
would do the modprobes manually.

Rick, on my machine i use a cyborg3d attached to a the gameport on the
motherboard, this requires the following modules in my /etc/modules:
 joydev
 analog
 ns558

for the gameport on my sblive i have to add emu10k1-gp,

 bascule

OK did this ...
So I looked at Harddrak and the gameport/joystick shows up as unknown/others ?
yet says this :
Vendor: Creative Labs
Bus: PCI
Bus identification: 1102:7002:1102:20
Location on the bus: 0:9:1
Description: SB Live! (joystick)
Module: emu10k1-gp
Media class: INPUT_OTHER

syslog says this when I modprobe for analog from CL :
analog.c: Unknown joystick device found (data=0x1, gameport0), probably not
analog joystick. -- I think its analog ?
modprobe joydev
gameport0: Emu10k1 Gameport at 0xd000 size 8 speed 1242 kHz

So I wouldnt think I have to recompile the kernel do I ??
$ lsmod
analog 9120 0 (unused)
gameport3268 0 [emu10k1-gp analog]
joydev 7136 0 (unused)
input 5696 0 [analog joydev]

so i did a
$jstest input
Joystick (Unknown) has 2 axes and 2 buttons. Driver version is 0.8.0.
Testing ... (interrupt to exit)
jstest: error reading: Is a directory

Its a sidewinder precision pro joystick ... ( x-window user )
I googled .. and found the same info you indicated Bascule, but I still have
no device node or is it named input Am I supposed to make one ...
any help is appreciated

you might find that the device files exist but don't have the right

if they exist and you haven't put those modules into /etc/modules then do
so and reboot, then try jstest, if /dev/js0 doesn't exist then i'm not

 /dev/js0 is a symlink to /dev/input/js0

this slow for google pages (15 secs). Being a former dos batcher, I dont
know much about xPee but this isnt right and what exactly is it doing behind
this hour glass ? I won't go back either, I dont hate M$, I just dont
like having much control anymore.
So he's gonna try Linux when I can install it next week. Try a dual boot. He
never used to know anything about PC's. I was gonna use texstar's PClinuxOS
on his machine 1st to DEMO it to them.

Anyway
Good Luck and Happy reading ;)
Regards

I'm sorry you're frustrated..but if you want help you will have to ask
 for it.
Up to now I couldn't find anything you've asked about your problems
excepting something about a proprietary source RPM you were trying to
build. So be more explicit about what you're trying to do and what's
stopping you to do that. That way we can help.

Feel free to go back to M$ if it bugs you that you have to learn to handle
another OS because learning is what it's all about in the early stages. If
you're not prepared to do that: Come back when you are.

You yourself stated an nforce chip is fairly current and there must
thousands of linux users with the same hardware with no trouble at all, so
the probability that you yourself are the source of all the mishaps that
are befalling you, is pretty high.

 Just ask.
BTW- Please turn off the reply to in your mail to the list it's

I understand the frustration Lance. I was using M$ win 98 up until sept 2003
and have only used it now to play some games. When I installed 9.1 I think I
hosed the install 10+ times in the 1st 3 weeks and I almost gave up. Although
I realized I wasn't prepared enough, so I googled for any how-to on bash, man
pages, specific commands, and any linux how-to .. I lurk this list cooker
mostly, but someone here recommended 2 O'Reilly books, Linux in a Nutshell
and Running Linux. I received Linux in a Nutshell first, so I started
there. It wasn't until I read Running Linux where I started hearing myself
say, aah..thats what they meant, this book sheds a lot of light on where
it all started and how it works together. I still refer to these references
all to often. Linux in a Nutshell has a ton of commands options and switches
which has helped me. I highly recommend these.

And rpm -rebuild has been separated into its own package: (unless I wrong, but
I did a man rpm and didn't see the --rebuild option)
rpm-build-4.2-22.1.92mdk
I also updated to these, for security , IIRC and you will need the -devel to
build from src
rpm-4.2-22.1.92mdk
rpm-devel-4.2-22.1.92mdk
And you will need the kernel source as HarM said.
http://rpms.mandrakeclub.com/rpms/mandrake/9.2/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/KByName.html

here is also a beginning for rpm how-to
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/basics/brpm.html

I too, am preparing to get nVidia drivers installed on 9.2, I failed once
already, so Ive been googling for anything else I might encounter. Heres 1
site to look into, haven't had time to peruse it as yet :

Actually my questions are dumb questions.

First: is there a master volume control in Mandrake 9.2? I can only
hear sound when the amplifier of my home theatre is at its maximum.

Second, I want to install the NVIDIA drivers, and there are the IA32,
and the AMD64, both supporting my Geoforce3 (Platinum) card. My
processor is an Athlon 1.4 Ghz. I reckon the 32 and 64 refer to a 32
bit OS and a 64 bit OS respectively, but I am in doubt about the AMD
bit which might refer to the processor.

Thanks for allowing me to dumb-ask.

 Teilhard

IA32 or IA64 are Intel architecture 32 and 64 bit
AMD64 is well ..you guessed it .. for your AMD Athlon 1.4, so download
the AMD64 driver and make sure you look at the readme file 1st.
I have an Intel and I rushed thru it to get it working and ended up
mangling it. So prepare yourself. You have any more questions post
them.

Good Luck

[newbie]Trouble playing DvD's in 9.2

2003-10-21 Thread Justin Ricks
I just recently upgraded to 9.2 from 9.1 and for the most part everything
worked fine the one thing that doesn't seem to is playing DVD's. I use
mplayer as my movie play and when I try to play a DvD the screen is garbled
and it runs slow. But the thing is when I had 9.1 installed I was able to
play DVD's without any problems.

Has anyone else experienced this or give me any advice on the problem.
Thanks.

[newbie] vfat file systems only accessible by root in MDK9.2

2003-10-02 Thread Justin Ricks
Greetings

I just recently installed MDK 9.2 and I am only able to access my vfat
partitions with my root account. I use to have 9.1 and I never had any
problems with this. I tried chmod, chown, chgrp and they seem to have no
effect on mounted drives.

Does any one have any suggestions.
